오늘 본문의 이야기는 엘리야 선지자가 오바댜라고 하는 아합 왕의 신하를 만나서 아합 왕에게 메시지를 전하라고 부탁하는 그 장면을 기록하고 있습니다. 엘리야가 무슨 부탁을 한 거죠? 가서 아합 왕에게 엘리야 선지자가 여기 있다라고 하는 사실을 알려주라고 부탁한 장면입니다. 왜 엘리야가 여기 있다고 하는 사실을 아합왕에게 알려주라고 한 것일까요? 여기 있으니 날 잡아 죽여라라고 하는 그런 의미일까요? 그게 아니라 이제 최후의 결투를 벌이기 위해서 그렇습니다.
우리가 잘 아는 것처럼 엘리야 선지자와 바알 선지자들 사이에 최후의 결투를 벌여서 정말 누가 진짜 하나님인가, 이스라엘 민족이 섬기고 있던 바알이 진짜 하나님인가 아니면 여호와 하나님이 진짜 하나님인가라고 하는 사실을 두고 마지막 최후의 결전을 벌이는 그 일을 위해서 엘리야 선지자는 아합 왕에게 그 결투를 이야기하기 위해서 여기 있다고 말하라고 한 것 그러니까 그렇게 해서 아합 왕을 만나기 위해서 그렇게 메시지를 전하라고 한 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 이런 부탁을 들었을 때 오바댜가 즉각적으로 알겠습니다. 그렇게 하겠습니다라고 대답하지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 오바댜라고 하는 사람의 마음 가운데 두려운 마음이 들었기 때문입니다. 가서 여기에 엘리야가 있다고 하는 사실을 알려주는 것이 왜 두려운 것일까요? 왜 무서운 일일까요? 왜 쉬운 일이 아니었을까요? 그것은 이 엘리야 선지자가 있다가 정작 가서 얘기했는데 사라져버리면 어떻게 됩니까?
지금 아합왕이 엘리야 선지자를 죽이겠다고 눈에 불이 켜 있는 이런 상황인데 엘리야 선지자가 정말 아합 왕을 만나줄지 또 지금까지 숨겨놓았다고 하는 그런 오해를 받을 수도 있고, 여러 가지로 아합 왕에게 나아가서 이 이야기를 한다는 것 자체가 쉬운 일이 아니라 어쩌면 목숨을 내놓아야 할 정도로 두려운 일이라고 이 오바댜라고 하는 사람이 생각 했던 것 같습니다. 만일 내가 아합 왕에게 죽임을 당한다고 한다면 무슨 일이 중단되겠습니까? 지금까지 자기가했던 일들이 아주 중단되는 위험한 상황에 빠지게 되는 거죠. 지금까지 오바댜라고 하는 신하가 선지자들을 50명씩 굴속에 숨겨놓고 그래서 100명이라고 하는 선지자들을 공급하는 정말 신실한 사역을 해왔었는데, 자칫 말을 잘못했다가 결국에는 그 일마저도 중단될 수 있는 그런 위험이 있기 때문에 오바댜는 엘리야에게 선뜻 긍정적인 대답을 하지 못하고 왜 이러십니까? 선지자님 절 죽이려고 하십니까? 라고 이야기한 것이죠.
그렇게 불안에 떨고 있는 오바댜를 향해서 했던 엘리야의 대답이 오늘 읽은 말씀 열왕기상 18장 15절에 기록되어 있습니다. 엘리야가 이르되 내가 섬기는 만군의 여호와께서 살아계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내가 오늘 아합에게 보이리라. 내가 지금 이렇게 이야기하는 것은 그냥 이야기하는 것이 아니라 하나님의 섭리와 계획 가운데 하나님의 지시하심이 있어서 반드시 내가 보일 것이고 아무 문제가 없을 거라고 하는 사실을 이야기하기 위해서 대답을 해 준 것입니다. 엘리야가 충동적으로 한 것이 아니라 하나님께서 명령하신 하나님의 뜻을 수행하는 것이라고 하는 것을 보여준 것이죠. 결국 오바댜가 어떻게 했을까요? 네 전달했습니다. 오늘 본문에서 우리가 읽지는 않았지만 다음 주에 우리가 살펴보겠는데 16절에서 보니까 오바댜는 아합 왕에게 이야기를 합니다. 엘리야가 있습니다. 엘리야를 만나십시오. 엘리야가 만나고 싶어 합니다.
이야기를 전했고, 결국 그 일로 인해서 아합왕과 엘리야 선지자가 만나게 되고, 그 일로 인해서 무슨 일이 벌어졌어요? 엘리야 선지자와 바알 선지자들 사이에 그 세기의 대결이 이루어지게 된 거죠. 갈멜산 위에서 제단을 쌓아놓고 바알 선지자들이 울부짖는 겁니다. 이방 종교의 특징이 무엇입니까? 최선을 다하는 거죠. 열정을 다하는 거죠. 심지어 자기 몸을 상해가면서 울부짖으면서 아침부터 저녁까지 울부짖으면서 바알 신이시여 우리들에게 불을 내려달라고 그렇게 이야기하면서 매달렸는데 불이 내려오지 않았습니다. 하지만 엘리야 선지자가 제단 위에 제물을 쌓아두고 그리고 거기에 무엇을 뿌립니까? 물을 뿌리는 거예요. 불이 내려도 사를 수 없게 설사 무슨 불이 조금이라도 있더라고 할지라도 제단의 제물이 사라지지 않도록 물을 뿌리고 그런데 하나님께서 불을 내려주셔서 참 하나님이 우리 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 증명하고 바알 선지자들을 죽이는 그런 엄청난 세기의 대결이 있게 되는 것이죠.
처음 듣는 이야기입니까? 아니죠. 갈멜산에서 쌓은 번제물을 불로써 태워 버린 여호와를 찬양하자 하나님께서 불을 내려서 그 갈멜산의 제물을 사살라버리는 그 이야기는 정말 아주 웅장하고 정말 신이 나고 감동적인 어마어마한 사건으로 아마 우리 신앙생활을 오랫동안 하신 분들이라고 한다면 주일 학교에서부터 신앙생활을 해 오신 분들이라고 한다면 그 장면이 아마 생생하게 기억이 나는 성경의 아주 중요한 그런 사건 가운데 하나라고 두고두고 기억할 이야기라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그런데 우리가 주목해 보고 싶은 것이 있는데요. 그건 무엇이냐 하면 그렇게 바알 선지자들과의 엄청난 대결 그리고 승리 그 엄청난 사건이 있기 전에 그 과정에 누가 있었는가 하는 거예요? 누가 있었죠? 오늘 우리가 살펴보고 싶은 것은 오바댜라고 하는 신하가 있었습니다. 그 오바댜가 아합왕에게 나아갔어요. 그리고 아합왕에게 이야기를 했어요.
엘리야가 여기 있습니다. 엘리야와 만나십시오 하면서 이야기해 주는 누가 있었는가? 오바댜가 거기 있었던 거예요. 목사님 그건 아무나 할 수 있는 거 아니에요? 맞아요. 아무나 할 수 있어요. 오바댜가 아니어도 다른 사람도 할 수 있고 누구라도 할 수 있는 그 일을 누가 했는가 오바댜가 했습니다. 우리의 문제는 어디에 있느냐 하면 아무나 할 수 있는 그 일을 못하는 게 문제야 그게 어려워요. 그게 힘든 일이냐고요. 그냥 아무나 가서 말할 수 있으면 말하면 되는 거잖아요. 하늘에서 불이 떨어지는 그런 어마어마한 일들을 우리가 할 수 없어도 아합왕 바로 내가 섬기는 신하로서 섬기는 그 신하가 아합왕 앞에 맨날 가서 인사하고 명령을 따르고 하는 그 관계 가운데 있는 그 아합왕에게 가서 여기 엘리야 선지자가 있습니다. 말하는 거 그냥 말하면 되잖아요.
그런데 놀랍게도 우리는 무엇을 못하는가 아무나 할 수 있는 것을 못하는 거예요. 우리는 어떻게 하나님의 나라를 세워 갈 수 있는가 어떻게 우리는 하나님의 일을 해 나갈 수 있는가 그것은 누구나 할 수 있는 그 일을 내가 하는 것입니다. 가서 전하라 할 때 전하는 거야. 조용히 내 옆에 있는 사람에게 손 한번 잡아주는 거야.
우리 교회에 처음 와서 친구도 없고 아는 사람도 없고 당황스럽고 나 혼자 보릿자루처럼 나 혼자 외롭고 있는 개처럼 보이는 그런 사람에게 가서 웃어주는 거예요. 어려운 게 아니라 고맙다고 이야기하고 힘내라고 이야기하고 그런데 그 어렵지 않은 걸 못해요.
무엇을 하는가? 하기 어려운 걸 해요. 하기 어려운 거 하지 말아야 하는 걸 해요. 성령의 음성을 듣고 하나님께서 기뻐하실 일들을 하는 게 아니라 하나님께서 원하지 않는 일들을 그냥 하는 거죠. 이 세상에 수많은 사람들이 있습니다. 우리가 그 옆에 서서 도와주고 사랑하고 손을 내밀면 그러면 일어설 수 있는데, 돌을 던지고 그리고 여러 가지 잘못을 말하면서 쓰러뜨리는 그 일을 할 게 아니라 오늘 엘리야 선지자가 오바댜에게 가서 전하라고 이야기했을 때 사실은 그 일이 그의 마음 가운데 부담스럽지 않은 것은 아니었습니다. 누구나 할 수 있는 일인데 누구나 할 수 없는 이유는 그것이 부담스럽기도 하고 때로는 그것이 죽는 것처럼 어렵게 느껴지기 때문에 그렇습니다. 그게 우리들의 모습인 것이죠. 그래서 오늘 저와 여러분들은 예수님이 필요한 겁니다. 주님 앞에 엎드려서 주님 도와주옵소서 주님께서 은혜를 베풀어 주셔서 용기를 낼 수 있게 해 주옵소서.
놀랍게도 우리들은 안타깝게도 너무나도 쉬운 일들을 아무것도 하지 못해서 그래서 교회가 너무 차갑고 너무나도 나를 아는 척해 주는 사람이 없고, 교회를 몇 년씩 다녀도 내 옆에는 같이 와서 밥 먹어주는 사람도 없고 손 내미는 사람이 없다고 해서 쓸쓸하게 교회를 떠나버리는 그런 일들이 우리들의 삶 가운데 너무나도 많이 발생하는 것이죠. 놀랍게도 오바댜는 그 순간에 두려운 마음이 있었지만 그때 선지자 엘리야의 말을 듣고 그의 마음 가운데 죽으면 죽으리다라고 하는 마음으로 아합 앞에 나아갔습니다. 오늘 저와 여러분들이 하나님 앞에 기도해야 합니다. 어떤 기도를 해야 할까요? 당연히 해야 하고 당연히 할 수 있는 그 작은 것들을 외면하지 않게 해 주옵소서. 하나님께서 기뻐하실 일이 무엇입니까? 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 일을 하게 하시고, 하나님께서 미워하는 일을 하지 않게 도와주옵소서.
미워하는 마음보다 사랑하는 마음을, 책망하는 말보다 질책하는 말보다 격려하는 말을 불평하고 원망하기보다는 감사하며 찬양하며 하나님께 영광 올려드리는 그런 작은 일들을 내 삶 속에서 진행해 나갈 수 있게 해 주옵소서. 그래서 내 주변의 사람들에게 행복 바이러스가 감사의 바이러스가 퍼져 나가게 해 주옵소서. 나를 만나는 사람들이 나와 이야기하고 감사의 마음이 더 많아지고 행복한 마음이 많아지고, 그리고 하나님을 찬양하는 마음들이 많아질 수 있도록 나의 그 자리에서 선한 영향력들을 발휘할 수 있도록 저에게 힘을 주옵소서 기도하며 엎드려야 합니다. 누구에게 할 수 있을까요? 그 누구에게 할 수 있는가 멀리 있지 않습니다. 우리 주님께서는 우리로 하여금 지금 우리가 살아가고 있는 이 시대에 직장 때려치고 가정 내팽개치고 저 멀리 아프리카로 가라고 말씀하시는 게 아니에요.
오바댜에게 요구하는 것은 니가 여기 있는 모든 직장 그만두고 저 멀리 니느웨 지역에 가서 하나님의 말씀 전하라고 한 거 아니에요. 오바댜에게 니가 매일매일 만나서 섬기는 그 아합 왕에게 가서 하나님의 말씀을 전하라고 부탁했듯이 오늘 하나님께서 우리에게 붙여주신 사람들이 있습니다. 내 남편이고 내 아내이고 우리 자녀들이고 우리 부모님들이고 우리 교회에서 같이 신앙생활하는 성도들이고 직장에서 같이 일하고 있는 호흡 맞추고 있는 모든 사람들이 사실은 하나님께서 우리들의 심령 가운데 말하라고 그리고 사랑을 보여주라고 그렇게 말씀하신 그 대상이라고 하는 사실을 기억하며 우리가 민감하게 하나님의 음성에 귀를 기울여야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 그 옛날 엘리야가 오바댜에게 이야기했듯이 하나님께서도 저희들에게 마음 가운데 들려주셔서 어떻게 오늘 내가 할 수 있는 일이 무엇입니까? 기도하며 나아가야 합니다.
오늘 우리들에게는 기도가 필요합니다. 왜 필요합니까? 우리의 힘과 우리의 능력으로서는 할 수 없기 때문에 그렇습니다. 쉬운 일인데 너무나도 어렵기 때문에 그렇습니다. 그래서 하나님 앞에 기도해야 돼요. 아침에 일어나서 기도하고 그리고 중간에도 기도하고 매 순간순간 하나님 힘 주옵소서 능력 허락해 주옵소서 주님의 뜻이라고 한다면 순종할 수 있는 마음을 주옵소서 기도하는 가운데 하나님의 풍성한 은혜를 누릴 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Faith in the Ordinary: Doing What Anyone Can Do, But Few Will
Today’s story records the scene where the prophet Elijah meets a servant of King Ahab named Obadiah and asks him to deliver a message to King Ahab. What did Elijah ask him to do? He asked him to go and tell King Ahab that Elijah is here. Why did he tell him to let King Ahab know that Elijah was here? Does it mean “I am here, so come catch me and kill me”? No, it was to engage in a final showdown.
As we well know, it was to hold a final showdown between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal to determine who the true God really is—whether Baal, whom the people of Israel were serving, is the true God, or whether Yahweh God is the true God. For the sake of this ultimate showdown, the prophet Elijah told him to say that he was here so that he could propose the battle to King Ahab. In other words, he asked him to deliver that message in order to meet King Ahab.
When Obadiah heard this request, he did not immediately answer, “Understood. I will do so.” That is because fear arose in the heart of the man named Obadiah. Why was it scary to go and tell him that Elijah was here? Why was it a terrifying thing? Why was it not an easy task? What if the prophet Elijah disappears after Obadiah actually goes and tells the king?
Right now, King Ahab is glaring with eyes full of fire, intent on killing the prophet Elijah. Would Elijah really meet King Ahab? Moreover, Obadiah might face misunderstandings, such as being accused of hiding Elijah all this time. Going to King Ahab and delivering this message was by no means an easy task; Obadiah likely thought it was such a fearful thing that he might have to lay down his life. If I am killed by King Ahab, what work would be cut short? The faithful work he had been doing up until now would be put in danger of coming to a complete halt. Up until now, the servant named Obadiah had been doing truly faithful ministry, hiding prophets in caves in groups of fifty and supplying a total of one hundred prophets with food and water. If he misspoke, even that ministry might come to an end. Because of that risk, Obadiah could not readily give a positive answer to Elijah and said, “Why do you do this? My lord, are you trying to kill your servant?”
Elijah’s response to Obadiah, who was trembling in anxiety, is recorded in 1 Kings 18:15, today’s scripture:
“And Elijah said, ‘As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.'”
Elijah gave this answer to let him know that he was not speaking impulsively, but that by God’s providence, plan, and instruction, he would surely show himself and there would be no problem. He showed that he was not acting on a whim, but fulfilling the command and will of God. How did Obadiah react in the end? Yes, he delivered it. Although we did not read it in today’s passage, as we will see next week, in verse 16, Obadiah speaks to King Ahab: “Elijah is here. Meet Elijah. Elijah wants to meet you.”
He delivered the message, and as a result, King Ahab and the prophet Elijah met, leading to that showdown of the century between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal. Building an altar on Mount Carmel, the prophets of Baal cried out. What is the characteristic of pagan religions? Doing one’s absolute best. Pouring out enthusiasm. Even harming their own bodies, they cried out from morning until evening, pleading, “O Baal, answer us and send fire!” But no fire came down. However, the prophet Elijah arranged the offering on the altar, and what did he pour on it? He poured water on it—pouring water so that even if fire came down, it couldn’t easily consume it, ensuring the offering on the altar wouldn’t disappear unless by a true miracle. Yet God sent down fire, proving that the true God is our God, culminating in that magnificent battle of the century where the prophets of Baal were executed.
Is this a story you are hearing for the first time? No, it isn’t. “Let us praise Yahweh, who consumed the burnt offering on Mount Carmel with fire!” The story of God sending down fire to consume the sacrifice on Mount Carmel is a truly grand, exciting, and deeply moving event. For those of us who have walked in faith for a long time, especially those who have grown up in the church since Sunday school, that scene remains vividly in our memory as one of the most important events in the Bible—a story to be remembered again and again.
However, there is something we want to pay attention to. What is it? It is the question: Who was there in the process before that tremendous battle with the prophets of Baal and that great victory took place? Who was there? What we want to look at today is that there was a servant named Obadiah. Obadiah went to King Ahab. And he spoke to King Ahab:
“Elijah is here. Go meet Elijah.” Who was there to say those words? Obadiah was there. “Pastor, isn’t that something anyone could do?” That’s right. Anyone could do it. Even if it weren’t Obadiah, someone else could have done it, but who actually did that job that anyone could do? Obadiah did it. Our problem lies right here: we fail to do the very things that anyone can do. That is what is difficult. Is it really that hard? It seems like anyone could just go and speak if they can speak. Even if we cannot perform astounding feats like calling down fire from heaven, Obadiah was a servant who served right under King Ahab—he went before King Ahab every day, greeted him, and followed his orders. Going to the king with whom he already had a relationship and saying, “The prophet Elijah is here”—can’t anyone just say that?
Yet amazingly, what is it that we fail to do? We fail to do the things that anyone can do. How can we build the Kingdom of God? How can we carry out God’s work? It is by doing the very tasks that anyone can do. When asked to go and share, we share. Quietly holding the hand of the person next to us.
When someone comes to our church for the first time, has no friends, knows no one, feels bewildered, and looks like a lonely sack of grain sitting isolated by themselves—going up to them with a smile. It’s not hard—just saying “Thank you” or “Hang in there!” Yet we fail to do those simple things.
What do we do instead? We do the hard things—or rather, the things we shouldn’t do. Instead of listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit and doing what pleases God, we simply do the things God does not want. There are countlessly many people in this world. If we stand beside them, help them, love them, and reach out our hands, they can rise up. Instead of throwing stones and pointing out faults to knock them down, when the prophet Elijah told Obadiah to go and deliver the message, that task was admittedly not without burden in his heart. The reason why a task that “anyone can do” becomes a task “no one does” is that it feels burdensome, and at times it feels as difficult as dying. That is our reality. That is why you and I need Jesus today. We must kneel before the Lord and pray, “Lord, help me. Grant me grace so that I may find the courage.”
Amazingly and regrettably, because we fail to do even the simplest things, the church feels cold, there is no one who greets us, and even after attending church for years, some people feel lonely because no one comes to eat with them or reaches out a hand—so they end up leaving the church in loneliness. Such things happen far too often in our lives. Remarkably, though Obadiah felt fear in that moment, upon hearing the words of the prophet Elijah, he stepped before Ahab with the heart of “if I perish, I perish.” Today, you and I must pray to God.
What kind of prayer should we pray? “Lord, let us not turn away from those small, ordinary things that we ought to do and naturally can do. What is it that pleases God? Help us to do what pleases God, and help us refrain from doing what God hates.
Help us to exercise love rather than hatred, words of encouragement rather than words of rebuke or criticism, and praise and thanksgiving to bring glory to God rather than complaining and resentment—let us carry out these small deeds in our daily lives. May the virus of happiness and gratitude spread to the people around me through my life. May those who meet me and talk with me find more gratitude, more happiness, and more praise for God in their hearts. Lord, give me strength so that I may exercise a good influence right where I am.” We must kneel and pray this way.
To whom can we do this? To whom can we reach out? It is not far away. Our Lord is not telling us in this day and age to quit our jobs, abandon our families, and go to far-off Africa.
What was required of Obadiah was not to quit his job and go to distant Nineveh to preach God’s word. Just as Obadiah was asked to go and deliver God’s message to King Ahab, whom he met and served every single day, God has placed people right beside us today. Our husbands, our wives, our children, our parents, our fellow believers at church, and our colleagues with whom we work every day at our jobs—all of them are actually the very people God has placed in our hearts to speak to and show love to. Remembering this fact, we must sensitively listen to God’s voice.
Just as Elijah spoke to Obadiah long ago, God speaks into our hearts today, asking: “What is the work I can do today?” We must go forward in prayer.
Today, we need prayer. Why do we need it? Because we cannot do it by our own strength and ability. Because simple things prove to be so difficult. Therefore, we must pray before God. We must pray when we wake up in the morning, pray throughout the day, and moment by moment ask, “Lord, give me strength. Grant me capability. If it is Your will, give me an obedient heart.” As we pray, may we all enjoy the abundant grace of God.
