A Tender Heart Over a Hardened Soul

Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done. He must have clearly conveyed how fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifice on the altar. If so, what kind of response would you expect from Jezebel upon hearing that story? You would think the proper response would be to realize, “Ah, the Baal we trusted and served was a fake, and the God of Israel is the true God,” and to repent of all her past wrongs, turn back, and return to God. Am I right, brothers and sisters?

If Jezebel had repented back then, if she had changed her heart upon seeing that wondrous event, God would have shown her grace. Why? Because God’s purpose is not wrath. God’s purpose is not to destroy us. What is God’s purpose? It is to restore us and to grant us His grace.

As it is written in Joel 2:13:

“Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.”

How great is the sin Ahab has committed until now? How great are the wrongs Jezebel has committed? They committed truly massive sins before God, but our hope, our expectation, and God’s grace itself is that no matter how great a sin one has committed, there is no sin that cannot be forgiven before God.

Unfortunately, however, rather than repenting, Jezebel hardened her heart even more. Just as Pharaoh of old, despite seeing countless miracles of God and witnessing those massive, wondrous works, continued to hold hardness in his heart and opposed God, Jezebel closed the door of her heart.

First Kings 19:2 records this:

“Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ‘So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.'”

She was resolved to kill Elijah and was notifying him of that fact. What is this like? In truth, God’s miracle was giving Jezebel a final opportunity to return. But when that final opportunity was given, instead of accepting it, she acted like a wounded lion or tiger trying to attack the person approaching to untie it from a trap—foolishly turning away God’s rescuing hand and going on the offensive. It is a regrettable thing.

Jezebel’s attitude is the exact opposite of Peter’s attitude. Peter did not witness such powerful, explicit evidence of God as Jezebel did. Jesus allowed an endless number of fish to be caught in the Sea of Galilee, but what kind of miracle was that? It was the kind of miracle where someone could just say, “It was a stroke of good luck.” Right? When Jesus enabled them to catch a massive amount of fish, a person with a hardened heart would just think, “That was pure coincidence. Sometimes you catch fish when fishing, sometimes you don’t; you drop the net and you might or might not catch anything—it’s pure luck, just happened that way.” While brushing it off as easily as that, Peter instead fell down before Jesus:

“Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

When the prophet Nathan came and rebuked David, David humbled himself into repentance. He possessed supreme power. Like Jezebel, he might have wrongly judged that simply eliminating the prophet Nathan would be enough to fully conceal his sin. Holding the highest power of the time, wielding absolute authority that could pluck a bird flying in the sky, getting rid of a powerless prophet like Nathan would have been as easy as eating pie. But David listened to Nathan’s words and entered a place of repentance. He fell before God, and that saved David. David did not survive because he was a righteous man; perhaps he was even worse than Saul. Perhaps he was a more heinous criminal, a more hardened person than Saul. Yet why did Saul perish while David survived?

It lies in repentance—repentance. When David heard the prophet Nathan’s words and fell before God, God had compassion on his soul and bestowed the wondrous grace of restoring him. Yet regrettably, Jezebel completely closed the door of her heart at that very moment. Evidence was not lacking; it was a powerful work of God so undeniable that anyone could recognize it, yet she closed her heart right before that massive miracle. It is a tragic thing.

Therefore, you and I must pray before God today: “God, soften our hearts. When we hear the message You speak to us, may we not close our hearts, push it away, and attack like a beast, keeping our hearts shut and ultimately walking the path of destruction like Jezebel. Instead, grant us ears to hear Your voice even amidst small evidence visible all around us every day, rather than waiting for fire to fall from heaven.” That must be our prayer.

Ezekiel 36:26–27 states:

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.”

What we need is not more powerful evidence, but a tender heart.

“Lord, do not let us harden our hearts like Jezebel”—praying this must be the subject of our prayers. In fact, that was David’s prayer. What does David pray in Psalm 51:10?

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Grant us a spiritually sensitive heart, so that even in God’s subtle whisper—not necessarily through heaven-shaking, massive events where many surrender, but through even the smallest signs of God—we may be sensitive and responsive before Him. This is the posture of heart we ought to have today.

God’s miracles do not happen all the time. Because we see countless miracles of God in the Bible, it is easy to think miracles happen constantly, but miracles like fire falling to consume the sacrifices on an altar do not happen every single day. God did not keep displaying ten plagues consecutively like He did to Pharaoh of Egypt. But is God silent? Is God not speaking anything? No. God is always speaking, always giving signs. He is constantly sending signals, isn’t He?

Just like wives—they are always sending signals, if only we would notice!

We need to catch God’s signals today. Catch the signals. But wouldn’t it be much better if those signals came gently? Rather than God speaking to us through car accidents, illnesses, or overwhelming disasters, He speaks to us through the ordinary routines of every single morning, prompting us to say, “Thank You, God,” praising and rejoicing. When we go astray and He taps at our hearts, we should listen, correct our behavior, and when He speaks through our friends, our enemies, or various other methods—instead of reacting like those who asked, “Surely not I, Lord?” when Jesus said one of them would betray Him, stubbornly trying to push it away as if it couldn’t possibly be them—we must open our hearts to the voice He speaks to us 24 hours a day, every minute and second, and step forward into a place of repentance.

Upon hearing Jezebel’s reaction, the prophet Elijah fled. Why did he run away? Because the world was still governed with an iron fist by King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. And Elijah collapsed before Queen Jezebel.

Looking at 1 Kings 19:4:

“But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.'”

We see him collapsing in despair. Perhaps this is akin to the spiritual burnout we often experience. If a mighty, prominent prophet like Elijah could collapse so easily, it is self-evident how much more easily people like us can fall.

This reflects our condition, but what is the essence of it? In truth, it is not so different from Jezebel’s attitude. If Jezebel closed her heart despite seeing great evidence, the prophet Elijah—even though he stood at the very center of that great work—collapsed before the threat of Queen Jezebel coming to kill him, looking at the threat rather than at God’s work.

Perhaps that is our weakness. We always wish to have strong faith, but alas, we are people who inevitably stumble because of our circumstances. Even while claiming to believe in God, when difficult trials begin to press upon us, enduring them becomes hard for us. Like a child who, despite being held safely in her mother’s arms, trembles in fear at the thunder crashing outside—it’s nothing, just sound, yet startled by it, she cries out even within her mother’s embrace—in reality, even while resting in God’s arms, how often do we stumble and collapse before small threats and anxieties around us?

That is why we must always pray: “Lord, help our unbelief. Help us to trust You more and rise up with greater boldness.”

Yet the wonderful thing is that God extended a hand of grace to such a weak Elijah. God gave him food, told him to get up, and the story records how He poured out grace to make him strong again. In truth, both Elijah and Jezebel were the same in that they failed to fully trust God, and both looked only at the things of this world instead of looking to God. If there was a difference between the two, what was it? While Jezebel maliciously closed her eyes to God, Elijah collapsed out of anxiety and failure to trust God due to his own weakness.

And that is what we are like. We are all weak. We are not strong; we are weak. Even while claiming to believe in God, we inevitably collapse when a little hardship strikes, and our hearts shut down when minor discomforts arise. That vulnerability belongs to our nature. And precisely for that reason, Jesus had to come into this world.

If we were perfect and could endure without any problems, there would have been no reason for our Lord to come into this world. But not a single person among us is an iron man. Since no one among us can achieve a flawless victory, our Lord came into this world and is reaching out His hand to us.

Therefore, in every single moment, we must implore God’s grace, receive the grace given by the Lord, and rise up once again. We must pray: “Lord, just as You restored Elijah of old by feeding him the bread of life, restore us, Lord, and feed us the bread of life.” Indeed, our Lord came into this world precisely to feed us that bread. By offering His body for us upon the cross, He provided that nourishment to us.

Beloved saints, whenever you fall, look to that Lord once again and rise up. Just as the Lord sought out Elijah who had collapsed under the broom tree, may the Lord grant us strength today so that we may rise again. We are fragile sinners who stumble and collapse over the smallest things, yet may He raise us up once more so that we can triumph in faith through prayer, abundantly experiencing the grace of God. I bless you in the name of the Lord.
