기도를 멈추지 말아야 할 이유 (눅 18:1-8)

이스라엘의 유명한 아주 훌륭한 사사였죠. 선지자였죠. 사무엘이라고 하는 사람은 은퇴하는 자리에서 이런 이야기를 한 적이 있습니다. 사무엘상 12장 23절의 말씀인데요. “나는 너희를 위하여 기도하기를 쉬는 죄를 여호와 앞에 결단코 범하지 아니하고 선하고 의로운 길을 너희에게 가르칠 것”이라고 이야기했습니다. 이제 사무엘 선지자가 나이가 많아서 더 이상 사사의 직무를, 선지자로서의 직무를 하기 어려운 상황에 이르렀을 때 이제 그 직을 내려놓으면서 하는 말이 “나는 이제 사사의 직분을 더 이상 감당할 수 없겠지만 그러나 중단할 수 없는 게 있다”라고 이야기한 겁니다. 그게 무엇이죠? 기도입니다. 다른 것은 다 중단하더라도 기도하는 것은 멈출 수가 없다고 이야기를 한 것이죠. 그런데 기도하는 것을 멈출 수 없다, 중단할 수 없다고 말하면서 표현한 그 표현 방식이 아주 놀랍습니다. 뭐라고 이야기했냐면 ‘기도하기를 쉬는 죄’라고 표현한 것이죠.

기도를 멈추는 것, 기도를 중단하는 것은 우리가 살다 보면 그냥 있을 수 있는 일이다가 아니라 그건 죄다, 그것은 하나님 앞에 범죄하는 일이라고 표현하고 있는 것입니다. 왜 기도하는 것을 멈추는 것이 죄가 되는 것일까요? 그것은 하나님을 인정하지 않는 것이기 때문에 그렇습니다. 우리가 하나님을 인정하고 나의 주 나의 하나님으로 받아들이고 예배하고 기도하는 게 우리들의 당연한 자세일 거라고 생각이 드는데요. 그런데 기도하지 않는다고 하는 것은 하나님을 나의 하나님으로 인정하지 않는 것과 마찬가지이기 때문에 내가 주님을 믿는다고 말하면서 내가 하나님을 섬긴다고 말하면서 실제적으로 기도하기를 중단해 버렸다고 한다면 그 믿음이 가짜는 아닌지 심각하게 질문해 보아야 한다고 하는 것입니다. 그런데 우리는 이 사이를 왔다 갔다 합니다. 기도할 때도 있지만 많은 경우에 기도하기를 중단하는 경우가 가끔씩 있습니다. 가끔씩 있습니까? 많이 있습니까?

어떤 때는 기도를 하지만 어떤 때는 기도할 힘조차 없어져 버려서 그래서 기도하지 못하게 되는 경우가 우리들에게 있는데요. 사실 알고 보면 그때가 더 하나님 앞에 기도해야 될 때인데, 기도해야 될 때 오히려 기도할 힘조차 없어져 버리는 경우가 많이 있는 것이죠. 왜 우리는 이렇게 기도하는 것을 중단하게 될까요? 기도하는 것을 멈추게 되는 그 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 그것은 내가 기도를 하기는 했지만 하나님께서 과연 내 기도를 들으시는지, 하나님이 내 기도에 귀를 기울이시고 나를 살펴보고 계시는지 잘 확신이 서지 않을 때 우리는 기도를 멈추게 됩니다. 저희 집 앞에는 고양이들이 매일매일 찾아오고 있는데요. 알고 계십니까? 저희 집 창문에 아침만 되면 고양이들이, 들고양이들, 길고양이들이 찾아와서 저희 집 창문 앞에서 야옹야옹거립니다. 왜 그럴까요? 네. 고양이들이 찾아올 때마다 그 고양이 밥을 내어 놓기 때문입니다. 제가 차 타고 들어가면 차를 따라서 들어옵니다. 왜 그럴까요?

그것은 자기들이 와서 야옹야옹거리면 이 집은 고양이 밥을 줄 거라고 하는 것을 알고 있기 때문에 항상 오는 겁니다. 그런데 만일 어느 날 우리가 밥 주는 것을 중단해 버린다고 한다면 오겠습니까? 안 오겠습니까? 아마 밥을 주는 더 너그러운 주인을, 집사를 찾아가 버리고 더 이상 우리 집에는 오지 않을 것 같습니다. 어쩌면 우리가 기도를 중단하게 되는 이유도 마찬가지일 겁니다. 우리가 하나님 앞에 기도했는데 하나님께서 그때마다 즉각 즉각 응답해 주신다고 한다면 기도하는 것이 재미있을 겁니다. 아, 기도했더니 응답해 주셨네.

기도했더니 응답해 주셔서 병도 낫았고, 기도했더니 문제가 해결됐고, 기도했더니 원하는 대로 내가 소원을 이루었고, 기도하는 것마다 하나님께서 다 이루어 주신다고 한다면 여러분 기도가 재미있어서 고양이들처럼 늘 우리 집에 찾아오는 고양이들처럼 하나님 앞에 어려울 때마다 나가서 기도하고 항상 하나님 앞에 엎드려 기도하게 될 텐데, 문제는 하나님께서 우리를 외면하시는 것 같을 때가 많다는 사실입니다. 하나님 앞에 기도하는데 우리가 느끼는 감정이 무엇이냐 하면 마치 허공에 대고 기도하는 것 같아요. 과연 하나님께서 내 기도를 들으시는지 안 들으시는지 확신할 수가 없는 것 같을 때가 너무나도 많이 있는 겁니다. 마치 우리가 기도하는데 하나님 앞에서 기도하는 것이 아니라 바위 앞에서 기도하는 것 같아요. 하나님이 반석이라서 그런가요? 하나님이 왜 이렇게 내 기도에 전혀 응답해 주지 않는 것인가? 그럴 때마다 우리는 낙심하게 되고 기도하는 것을 멈추게 될 때가 많이 있는 겁니다.

그런 우리들을 위해서, 그런 제자들을 위해서 예수님께서 한 비유의 말씀을 해 주셨는데 바로 오늘 우리가 읽은 과부와 재판장의 비유의 이야기를 예수님께서 들려주셨습니다. 예수님께서 제자들을 모아놓고 비유의 말씀을 해 주시는 거예요. 얘들아 들어봐라. 옛날에 재판장이 있었고 과부가 있었어. 그런데 그 과부가 재판장 앞에 나가서 간청하는 거야. 재판장님 재판장님 내 문제를 해결해 주세요. 내 문제를 좀 해결해 주세요. 그런데 재판장이 그 과부의 간청을 듣고 해결해 주었느냐 하면 안 들어주었어.

왜냐하면 그 재판장이 어떤 사람이었냐면 타락한 재판장이거든. 돈 주는 사람의 이야기는 듣고, 뇌물 주는 사람들의 이야기는 듣고 그 사람들을 위해서는 판결을 유리하게 해주지만 그 힘 없는 여인 과부, 아무런 재산도 없고 아무런 빽도 없고 아무런 힘도 없는 그냥 아무나인 그 과부가 그 재판장 앞에 나가서 자신의 문제를 이야기할 때 이 재판장이 들어줄 리가 없었단 말이다. 그런데 그 이야기를 하시면서 예수님께서 말씀해 주십니다. 그런데 이 과부가 중단했는가? 아니다. 이 과부는 매일매일 재판장을 찾아갔어요. 오늘 또 찾아가고 내일 또 찾아가고 계속 계속 찾아가서 내 문제를 해결해 달라고 할 때 그 재판장이 속으로 생각하기 시작한 거야. 정말 귀찮구나. 아 정말 싫어 죽겠네.

왜 이 여자가 나한테 이렇게 달라붙나 하면서 생각하기를 이 여자를 어떻게 하면 떨쳐버릴까, 차라리 이 여인의 청을 들어주고 그 사람의 문제를 해결해 주면 더 이상 나에게 와서 귀찮게 하지 않을 것이니까 들어줘 버리자라고 하는 비유의 말씀을 예수님께서 들려주셨습니다. 그리고서 예수님께서 그 비유를 들은 제자들을 향해서 이런 말씀을 해 주신 것이죠. 누가복음 18장 6절에서 7절 말씀에 “주께서 또 이르시되 불의한 재판장이 말한 것을 들으라. 하물며 하나님께서 그 밤낮 부르짖는 택하신 자들의 원한을 풀어 주지 아니하시겠느냐 그들에게 오래 참으시겠느냐”

예수님께서는 그 제자들을 향해서 그리고 오늘 우리들을 향해서 말씀해 주고 계시는 겁니다. 그 재판장이 어떤 사람인가? 그 재판장에게 가서 정의로운 판결을 받아내는 것은 불가능에 가까운 일이었습니다. 가능성이 제로인 거죠. 아무런 가능성이 없는 사람이었던 겁니다. 내 사건을 담당한 재판관이 그 재판장이라고 하는 이야기를 들었을 때 사람들은 그 과부에게 와서 이야기하는 겁니다. 포기해. 그 사람은 피도 눈물도 없는 사람이야. 그 재판장은 너에게 아무런 도움을 줄 수가 없는 재판장이야. 그 사람은 사악한 사람이기 때문에 네 이야기는 들어주지 않을 거야. 그냥 포기해. 그런데 그 이야기를 듣고도 그 과부는 포기하지 않았습니다. 매일매일 간 거야. 매일매일 간 거야. 그런데 놀라운 일이 벌어졌습니다. 그 재판장의 마음 가운데 번민이 생겼어요. 이거 어떡하지 이거 어떡하지 그러면서 이 재판장이 내린 결론이 저 여인의 청을 들어줘버려야 되겠다.

결국 놀랍게도 이 과부는 불가능한 상황 가운데서 응답을 얻게 되는 놀라운 결과를 얻게 되었다고 하는 이야기를 들려주시면서 예수님께서 우리들에게 교훈해 주고 계십니다. 이 재판장이 한 말을 들어봐라. 하물며 하나님께서 그 사랑하는 자들의 기도를 외면하시겠는가? 가능성이 제로인 그 상황에서도 이 과부가 기도하여 간청하여 응답을 얻었다고 한다면, 너희가 기도하다가 낙망할 것이 아니라 하나님 앞에 기도하는 것을 멈추지 말라고 교훈해주고 계시는 것입니다. 왜 우리는 기도하다가 낙심하지 말아야 하겠습니까? 기도하다가 낙심하지 말아야 될 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 그것은 우리가 이 과부처럼 끈질기게 하나님 앞에 매달리고 또 매달리면 결국은 하나님께서 이 재판장처럼 우리들에게 항복하고 우리가 원하는 것을 다 들어주실 것이기 때문에 낙심하지 말라고 하는 그런 의미일까요? 사실은 그렇지 않습니다. 놀랍게도 믿음의 사람들은 기도하다가 그 기도의 제목을 내려놓았습니다. 누가 그랬죠?

사도 바울이 그랬습니다. 사도 바울은 육체의 질병이 있었습니다. 그 질병이 너무나도 괴로운 것이었고, 복음을 전하는 일에 너무나도 큰 장애가 되어서 하나님 앞에 간절하게 기도했습니다. 하나님 내게 있는 이 질병을 고쳐주옵소서. 육체의 가시, 사탄의 가시를 좀 제거해 주옵소서. 하나님 앞에 간절하게 기도했는데, 어느 날 하나님께서 바울 사도의 마음 가운데 놀라운 깨달음을 주신 겁니다. 하나님께서 말씀하시기를 “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다. 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라.” 그 하나님의 마음을 깨닫게 된 다음에 바울 사도는 그 기도를 중단하였습니다. 또 누가 중단했습니까? 예수님이 중단한 것이죠. 예수님께서는 기도하다가 하나님 내게서 이 십자가를 제거해 주세요. 할 수만 있다면 이 잔을 내게서 옮겨달라고 하나님 앞에 기도했는데, 그런데 예수님께서는 기도하시다가 그 기도의 제목을 바꾸셨습니다. “그러나 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서.”

오늘 우리가 기도하다가 낙심하지 말아야 될 이유가 있다고 한다면, 우리가 계속해서 기도하면 우리가 원하는 것을 이루어 낼 수 있기 때문이 아니라 다른 이유 때문입니다. 그것은 첫 번째로 하나님은 불의한 재판장이 아니기 때문입니다. 예수님의 비유에 등장하는 이 재판장은 사악한 재판장이고, 아무리 간청을 해도 귀찮아하는 그런 마음이 아주 악한 재판장이었습니다. 그런데 하나님은 어떤 하나님이십니까? 우리가 기도하는 것은 사악한 재판장 앞에 나가서 기도하는 것이 아니라 우리를 사랑하사 그 아들을 십자가에 내어주시기까지 사랑하시는 사랑이 많으신 하나님 아버지 앞에 나아가 기도하는 거라고 하는 사실을 기억해야 할 것입니다. 그래서 성경은 하나님을 뭐라고 부릅니까? 우리의 아버지다. 하늘의 아버지다. 우리의 영적인 아버지다. 아버지는 어떤 분이에요? 우리의 부모님이 어떤 분이에요? 우리 자녀가 원하는 거라고 하면 들어주고 싶어서 안달이 나는 게 부모님의 마음이에요. 그렇지 않습니까?

우리 아이가 출근하는 아빠를 향해서 “아빠 나 아이스크림 먹고 싶어” 하면 출근하면서 그 아이의 말소리가 마음에서 떠나지가 않아요. 오늘 밤에 내가 퇴근하고 돌아갈 때는 아이스크림 사갖고 가야지. 우리 아이가 좋아하는 배스킨라빈스 사 가야지. 그 마음을 가지고 그 아이를 위해서 아이스크림을 사고 아이스크림을 살 뿐만 아니라 통닭까지 사가지고 가는 거야. 피자까지 사들고 가는 거. 우리가 기도하는 기도 대상인 하나님은 어떤 하나님이신가? 듣지 않으려고 하는 사악한 재판장과 같은 하나님이 아니라 우리가 기도한 것보다도 더 많은 것으로 더 풍성하게 응답하실 사랑이 많으신 하나님이시기 때문에 그 하나님 앞에서 낙망하는 것이 아니라 믿고 신뢰하며 엎드려야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 마태복음 7장 11절의 말씀에 주님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 악한 자라도 좋은 것으로 자식에게 줄 줄 알거든 하물며 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께서 구하는 자에게 좋은 것으로 주시지 않겠느냐”

두 번째로 우리가 낙심하지 말아야 될 이유가 무엇일까요? 그것은 우리가 과부와 같은 사람이 아니기 때문입니다. 예수님께서 들려주신 이 과부는 어떤 사람이었습니까? 그냥 남이었어요. 판사에게는 그냥 귀찮은 존재였어요. 판사에게는 이 과부는 아무것도 아닌 하찮은 존재일 수밖에 없었어요. 하지만 하나님 앞에 우리들은 누굽니까? 오늘 읽은 누가복음 18장 7절의 말씀에 이렇게 표현합니다. “하물며 하나님께서 그 밤낮 부르짖는 택하신 자들의 원한을 풀어 주지 아니하시겠느냐” 우리가 누구예요? 택하신 자! 하나님께서 우리를 언제 택하셨습니까?

만세 전에 우리를 선택하시고 우리의 어머니 뱃속에서 우리가 조성되기 전에 우리를 먼저 아시고 택하시고 사랑하신 그 하나님께서 우리를 깊이 사랑하시는 그 주님께서 우리에 대한 그 기도를, 우리의 기도를 외면하시는 것이 아니라 우리를 사랑하시는 분이라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 오늘 우리가 기도의 손길을 내려놓는 것이 아니라 기도하며 아버지 앞에 나아가는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 로마서 8장 32절의 말씀에 “자기 아들을 아끼지 아니하시고 우리 모든 사람을 위하여 내주신 이가 어찌 그 아들과 함께 모든 것을 우리에게 주시지 아니하겠느냐” 이미 목숨까지도 내어주셨는데 생명까지도 내어주셨는데 그것보다 하찮은 것들을 주지 않겠다고 응답하지 않겠다고 감추어 두는 하나님이 아니라 길이길이 우리들의 기도에 응답하시고 축복하시는 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 기억하며 담대하게 하나님 앞에 나아가는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.

그런데 우리가 늘 어려운 것은 무엇이냐면 “목사님 그런데 왜 응답이 안 되는 거죠?” 하는 것입니다. “하나님이 사랑의 하나님이라면서요. 하나님이 우리를 그렇게 사랑신다면서 왜 내 삶을 하나님께서는 변화시켜주지 않는 겁니까? 하나님 왜 내 기도는 들어주지 않는 겁니까?” 그때마다 우리가 낙심하게 될 수밖에 없는데, 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가 낙심하지 않고 기도의 손을 내려놓지 않아야 될 이유가 무엇입니까? 그것은 오늘 이 비유에 등장하는 과부가 재판장 앞에 끈질기게 나아갔을 때 그때 결국은 재판장이 손 들고 응답해 준 것처럼 우리도 하나님 앞에 계속해서 기도하면 하나님도 언젠가는 우리들에게 항복할 것이라고 하는 것을 가르쳐 주시는 걸까요? 그렇지는 않습니다.

우리가 기도를 중단하지 말아야 한다고 하는 것은 하나님께서 우리가 끝까지 기도하면 응답해 주는 것이 아니라 사실은 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신다고 하는 사실을 알기 때문에 기도하는 것 자체를 중단하지 말라고 하는 의미의 말씀입니다. 하나님은 어떤 하나님이십니까? 그냥 우리가 구하는 것을 아무 생각 없이 주는 하나님은 아닙니다. 재판장이 준 이유가 있다고 한다면 귀찮게 하지 않게 만들기 위해서 줘버리고 떨궈버리기 위해서 줘버린 거예요. 그러면 더 이상 나한테 안 오겠지 하고 하는 마음. 그런데 하나님은 무엇을 물으십니까? ‘그것이 우리에게 유익한가? 그것이 과연 우리들에게 도움이 되는가? 이것을 내가 응답한다고 한다면 이것이 우리들의 삶에 영적으로 유익한가?’를 물으시는 하나님이신 거죠. 요즘 보이스피싱에 아주 문제가 많은데요. 어떤 할머니 한 분이 보이스피싱에 속아서 은행에 가게 되었습니다.

그동안 모아두었던 얼마 남지 않은 모든 재산이 그 통장 안에 들어 있는데 은행원에게 다가가서 돈을 찾아달라고 요청을 한 겁니다. “이 통장에 있는 돈 전부 3천만 원을 좀 찾아주세요. 여기 제 신분증이 있고 여기 제 도장이 있습니다.” 은행에서 내줘야 됩니까? 내주지 않아야 합니까? 내줘야 되는 거예요. 신분 확인됐습니다. 통장 있고 도장 있습니다. 비밀번호 다 정확하게 말했습니다. 내줘야 됩니까? 안 내줘야 됩니까? 내줘야 되는 게 맞아요. 그런데 은행원이 눈치를 챈 겁니다. “할머니 이 돈 가지고 뭐 하려고 돈을 찾으세요?” 묻지 않아도 되는 질문인데 질문을 던졌습니다. 요즘은 묻게 돼 있죠. 그랬더니 할머니가 대답하는 거예요. “그런 거 신경 쓰지 마. 내가 할 일이 있어서 그래. 내가 이 돈 급하게 쓸 데가 있어서 그래.” 그러니까 돈 찾아달라고 이야기합니다. 자꾸 미적미적거리면서 물어보니까 할머니는 조급해집니다.

아니 지금 빨리 돈을 좀 찾아야 되는데 왜 돈을 안 주냐고 빨리 찾아달라고 이야기를 합니다. 하지만 은행원은 그 순간에 돈을 내주지 않고 경찰에게 연락을 합니다. 그래서 다행히도 그 할머니의 돈을 보존해 주는 놀라운 기지를 발휘했다고 하는 이야기가 우리 뉴스거리로 많이 들리게 됩니다. 하나님은 누구신가? 내가 그냥 이 돈 주면 보이스피싱에 걸려서 다 탕진하고 말든 상관없이 그냥 달라는 대로 다 내주면 된다고 생각하는 은행원이 아니에요. 기도하기만 하면 그냥 자동으로 응답해 주는 재판장이 아니에요. 하나님은 어떤 하나님이신가? 우리를 사랑하시기 때문에 질문을 던지는 거예요. “내가 이거 응답하면 너는 그것으로 뭐 할래? 내가 이거 응답한다면 그것으로 어떤 삶을 살래? 이것이 너에게 유익한가 유익하지 않은가를 물어보시는 거예요.” 그런데 야고보서 4장 2~3절의 말씀을 보니까 이렇게 기록합니다. “너희가 얻지 못함은 구하지 아니하기 때문이요 구하여도 받지 못함은 정욕으로 쓰려고 잘못 구하기 때문이라” 하나님께서 보실 때 이것은 정욕으로 구하는 것이에요. 이것으로 구해서 하나님께서 응답해 주신다고 한다면 분명히 망할 것 같아요. 분명히 이것은 망치는 길이에요. 어쩌면 우리들의 기도는 무엇과 같은가, 마치 영적인 보이스피싱에 속아서 하나님 앞에 나아가서 내 돈 내놓으라고 요구하는 기도와 같은 경우가 많습니다. “하나님 돈 주세요. 하나님 이거 해결해 주세요. 이거 저거 해 주세요” 이야기하는데 사탄이 우리들을 속입니다. 돈이 우리들의 우상인 것처럼, 돈이 우리들의 문제의 해결인 것처럼, 성경이 우리들의 문제 해결인 것처럼 사탄이 들려주는 그 보이스피싱에 속아서 “하나님 다 응답해 준다고 하면서 왜 안 주는 거예요? 내놓으라”고 이야기하는 거야. 그런데 하나님께서 질질 끌으시면서 대답하시는 겁니다. “내가 이걸 준다고 한다면 너는 그것으로 뭐 할래? 그것으로 어떤 삶을 살래? 그것이 너에게 유익한 거야, 그것이 너에게 유익하지 않은 거야”를 물어보시고, 우리에게 즉각적으로 응답하지 않는 것처럼 보이지만, 우리가 하나님의 선하심과 사랑하심을 의심할 것이 아니라 중단할 것이 아니라 응답되지 않는 상황 가운데서도 우리가 의심하는 것이 아니라 낙심하는 것이 아니라 기도의 손길을 계속 유지해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.

바울 사도는 하나님께서 병을 치료해 주지 않았기 때문에 그 이후로 더 이상 기도하지 않은 게 아닙니다. 병을 고쳐달라고 하는 기도는 중단했지만 매 순간순간마다 하나님 앞에 엎드렸어요. “하나님 이 고통에서 이기게 해 주시고, 이런 상황 가운데서 복음이 잘 전파될 수 있게 해 주시고, 이런 감옥에 들어가는 상황 가운데서도 믿음을 잃지 않고 복음을 전할 수 있게 해 주옵소서.” 병을 치유해 달라고 하는 기도의 제목은 멈추었지만 하나님을 신뢰하는 것은 멈추지 않고 계속해서 기도하며 엎드린 줄로 믿습니다. 하나님은 어떤 하나님이십니까? 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님입니다.

마치 부모가 자녀들의 신음 소리조차 귀를 기울이며 어떻게 하면 가장 좋은 것을 해주길 원하는가, 어떻게 해야 이 아이에게 가장 좋은가를 고민하는 우리들의 어머니 아버지처럼, 하나님께서는 우리에게 가장 좋은 것을 주시기 원하시는 하나님이시기 때문에 낙심할 것이 아니라 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인가를 분별하며 기도하는 일을 중단하지 않는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 그런데 놀라운 것이 있어요. 어떻게 하나님께서는 우리를 사랑하시고 우리의 기도에 응답하시는가? 우리는 죄인이고 우리는 하나님의 자녀가 될 수 없는 악한 생각을 가지고 살았고, 늘 실수하고 늘 넘어지는 죄악 가운데 있는 우리들인데, 어떻게 이런 죄인을 하나님께서는 사랑하시는가? 놀랍게도 그것은 예수님께서 우리를 위하여 십자가를 지셨기 때문입니다. 우리를 죄악의 구렁텅이 가운데서 살려내시고 우리를 하나님의 자녀로 삼아주셨기 때문입니다.

그 과정 가운데서 하나님께서는 아들 예수 그리스도의 부르짖음에 귀를 닫으시고, “어찌하여 어찌하여 나를 버리시나이까” 울부짖는 그 주님의 울부짖음에 귀를 닫으시고, 그 아들을 십자가의 죽음 가운데 내어주시는 가운데 우리들에게 귀를 여시는 놀라운 선택을 하셨습니다. 오늘 우리가 기도하는 것은 그렇기 때문에 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 기도하는 겁니다. 주님께서 나를 위하여 죽으신 그 죽음의 능력에 그 대속의 은혜에 의지하여 하나님 앞에 나아가는 것입니다. 원하기는 우리들의 삶 가운데서 주님을 더욱더 신뢰하고 의지하는 가운데 하나님과의 깊은 교제, 하나님과의 깊은 사귐이 있는 그런 기도의 삶이 지속될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Why We Must Never Stop Praying: Trusting God Beyond Immediate Answers

Israel had a famous and truly wonderful judge, a prophet. A man named Samuel once said something as he was stepping down from his role. It is recorded in 1 Samuel 12:23: “Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way.” When the prophet Samuel had grown old and reached a point where he could no longer carry out his duties as a judge and prophet, he stepped down from that office and said, “I can no longer fulfill the role of a judge, but there is one thing I cannot stop.” What is that? Prayer. He said that even if everything else stops, prayer cannot be stopped. Yet the way he expressed this—saying that he could not stop or cease praying—is truly striking. He described it as the “sin of ceasing to pray.”

To stop praying, to cease praying, is not presented as a minor occurrence that simply happens in life, but as a sin. He is expressing that it is a transgression before God. Why does ceasing to pray become a sin? Because it fails to acknowledge God. It is our natural posture to acknowledge God, to receive Him as my Lord and my God, and to worship and pray to Him. However, to refrain from praying is equivalent to not acknowledging God as my God. If someone claims to believe in the Lord and serve God, yet in reality has stopped praying, they ought to examine whether their faith is genuine. Yet we tend to oscillate back and forth. There are times we pray, but frequently there are moments when we stop praying. Does this happen occasionally, or does it happen often?

At times we pray, but at other times we lose even the strength to pray, finding ourselves unable to do so. In truth, those are the very moments when we ought to pray before God, yet precisely when we need to pray, we often lose even the strength to pray. Why do we cease praying in this way? What is the reason we stop praying? It happens when, despite having prayed, we lack assurance—unclesr whether God actually hears our prayer, or whether He is leaning in to listen and watch over us. In front of my house, cats come by every single day. Did you know that? Every morning, wild cats—stray cats—come to the window of my house and meow right in front of it. Why do they do that? Yes, because every time they come, I put out cat food for them. When I pull up in my car, they even follow the car inside. Why is that?

Because they know that if they come and meow, food will be provided at this house. That is why they always return. However, what if one day we stopped feeding them? Would they come back or not? They would likely leave to find a more generous master, a different caretaker, and would no longer come to our house. Perhaps the reason we cease praying is much the same. If God were to answer immediately every single time we prayed, praying would feel delightful. We would think, “Ah, I prayed, and He answered!”

“I prayed, and He answered by healing my illness; I prayed, and the issue was resolved; I prayed, and my desires were fulfilled.” If God were to grant every single prayer, then, just like those cats visiting our house, we would gladly run to God whenever times are tough, constantly kneeling before Him in prayer. The difficulty, however, is that God often seems to turn a deaf blind eye to us. When we pray before God, the feeling we often experience is as though we are speaking into thin air. There are so many times when we cannot feel certain whether God hears our prayer or not. It feels as though we are praying before a boulder rather than before God. Is it because God is a rock? Why does God seem to leave my prayers completely unanswered? Every time that happens, we grow discouraged, and we often stop praying.

For those of us in that position—and for His disciples—Jesus shared a parable. Today we read the story of the parable of the persistent widow and the judge. Jesus gathered His disciples and told them this parable: “Listen, everyone. Long ago, there was a judge and there was a widow. The widow came before the judge and pleaded, ‘Judge, judge, give me justice! Please resolve my case!’ Yet did the judge listen to her plea and grant her justice? No, he did not.”

Why? Because that judge was a corrupt judge. He listened to those who gave him money and accepted bribes, rendering favorable verdicts for them. But when a powerless woman—a widow with no wealth, no influence, no backing, just an ordinary nobody—came before him to present her cause, there was no reason for this judge to listen to her. Yet as Jesus told this story, He added a key point: “Did this widow give up? No. She went to the judge day after day. She went today, she went tomorrow, and she kept going back continuously, pleading for her cause to be settled. Eventually, the judge began to think to himself: ‘This is incredibly bothersome. I really cannot stand this.’

‘Why does this woman keep pestering me?’ He thought, ‘How can I get rid of her? It would be better to grant her request and settle her cause so she stops coming to bother me.'” This is the parable Jesus shared. Then Jesus spoke these words to the disciples who had listened to the parable: Luke 18:6–7 says, “And the Lord said, ‘Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?'”

Jesus was speaking to His disciples then, and He is speaking to us today. What kind of man was that judge? Obtaining a just ruling from him was nearly impossible. The odds were zero; he was a man with no possibility of doing right. When people heard that such a judge was assigned to her case, they would have told the widow, “Give up. That man has no mercy or compassion. He will never offer you any help. He is wicked, so he won’t listen to your story. Just give up.” Yet even after hearing such things, the widow did not give up. She went back day after day. And then something remarkable happened: Anxiety and inner conflict arose in the judge’s mind. “What should I do about this? What should I do?” Finally, the judge reached a conclusion: “I had better grant this woman’s request.”

Thus, remarkably, this widow achieved an extraordinary outcome—receiving an answer in a situation where it seemed impossible. Through this story, Jesus teaches us a lesson. “Listen to what this judge said. Will not God much more care for those He loves rather than ignoring their prayers?” If even in a situation where the probability was zero, this widow received an answer by praying and pleading, then we must not lose heart as we pray, but refrain from stopping our prayers before God. Why should we not lose heart while praying? What is the reason we must not give up in prayer? Is it because if we, like this widow, persistently cling to God over and over, God will eventually surrender to us like that judge and grant everything we desire? In reality, that is not the case. Remarkably, people of faith have laid down their specific prayer requests while praying. Who did that?

The Apostle Paul did. He suffered from a physical affliction. That illness caused him immense pain and posed a great obstacle to his ministry of proclaiming the gospel, so he prayed earnestly to God: “Lord, heal this disease in me. Please remove this thorn in the flesh, this messenger of Satan.” He prayed fervently before God, until one day God granted a profound realization in Paul’s heart. God spoke to him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Once Paul understood the heart of God, he stopped offering that particular prayer. Who else stopped? Jesus Himself did. While praying, Jesus pleaded, “Father, remove this cup from me. If it is possible, let this cup pass from me.” Yet as He prayed, Jesus altered the direction of His request: “Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

If there is a reason we should not lose heart while praying today, it is not because continuous prayer will allow us to achieve whatever we want, but because of a different reason altogether. First, it is because God is not an unrighteous judge. The judge in Jesus’ parable was wicked, harboring a corrupt heart that found requests burdensome. What kind of God is our God? When we pray, we are not coming before a wicked judge; we are approaching God our Father, who loves us so deeply that He gave His own Son on the cross. Therefore, what does Scripture call God? Our Father. Our Heavenly Father. Our spiritual Father. What is a father like? What are our earthly parents like? When a child desires something, a parent’s heart longs to grant it. Isn’t that true?

When a child says to a father leaving for work, “Dad, I want ice cream,” those words echo in the father’s heart all day. He thinks, “When I head home tonight, I must buy ice cream for my child. I’ll get that Baskin-Robbins ice cream my child likes so much.” With that thought, he buys the ice cream, and not just ice cream—he picks up fried chicken and pizza as well. What kind of God is the One to whom we pray? He is not like a wicked judge who refuses to listen, but a God of immense love who responds far more abundantly than what we ask. Therefore, instead of despairing before Him, we ought to kneel in trust and faith. In Matthew 7:11, the Lord said: “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Second, what is another reason we should not lose heart? It is because we are not like that widow. Who was the widow in Jesus’ story? She was a complete stranger to the judge, nothing more than a nuisance to him. To the judge, she was an insignificant, powerless person. Yet who are we before God? Luke 18:7, which we read today, describes us this way: “And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night?” Who are we? His elect! When did God choose us?

Before the creation of the world, He chose us. Before we were formed in our mother’s womb, He knew us, chose us, and loved us. Remembering that the Lord, who loves us deeply, does not ignore our prayers but cares for us, we must not lower our hands in prayer, but continue to draw near to our Father. Romans 8:32 states: “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” If He has already given His very life, how could He withhold lesser things or refuse to answer? Remembering that He is a God who responds to and blesses our prayers, we ought to come boldly before Him.

Yet the difficulty we often face is this: “Pastor, why do my prayers seem unanswered then?” “If God is a God of love and loves us so much, why does He not change my circumstances? Why does He not answer my prayer?” Whenever that happens, we are prone to discouragement. Even so, why must we refrain from giving up and lowering our hands in prayer? Is it because, just as the widow went persistently before the judge until he gave in, God too will eventually surrender to us if we keep praying continuously? That is not the case.

The command not to stop praying does not mean God answers simply because we pray endlessly; rather, knowing that God loves us, we are meant to keep praying itself. What kind of God is He? He does not hand over whatever we ask for without thought. If the judge gave in, it was merely to rid himself of a nuisance so she would stop bothering him. God, however, asks a different question: “Is this beneficial for them? Will this truly help them? If I answer this request, will it serve their spiritual good?” Consider how voice phishing scams cause serious trouble these days. An elderly woman was once deceived by a voice phishing scam and went to the bank.

Her remaining lifetime savings were in that account, and she approached the teller asking to withdraw all of it: “Please withdraw all 30 million won in this account. Here is my ID and my stamp.” Should the bank teller hand over the money or not? Legally, they must. Identity was verified, the bankbook and stamp were present, and the password was correct. Should they hand it over or not? Ordinarily, yes. However, the teller sensed that something was wrong and asked a question they didn’t strictly have to ask: “Ma’am, what are you planning to do with this money?” The woman replied, “Don’t worry about that. I have personal business to attend to. I need this money urgently.” As the teller hesitated and asked further questions, the woman grew anxious: “I need to withdraw this money quickly, why aren’t you giving it to me? Please give it to me right away!”

Instead of releasing the funds, the teller contacted the police. Thanks to that quick thinking, the woman’s funds were safely preserved—a story we often hear in the news. Who is God? He is not like an unthinking teller who simply hands over money regardless of whether it will be lost to a scam. Nor is He like a judge who functions as an automatic vending machine for answers. God is a loving Father who asks: “If I grant this, what will you do with it? What kind of life will you live through it? Is this truly good for you, or is it harmful?” James 4:2–3 states: “You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” From God’s perspective, certain requests stem from worldly passions. If God were to grant them, it might lead us down a path of ruin. In many ways, our prayers can resemble a victim of spiritual voice phishing, demanding money from God under a delusion. “God, give me money. God, fix this. Do this and that for me,” we pray, while Satan deceives us into thinking wealth or specific circumstances are our ultimate saviors. Tricked by spiritual deception, we demand, “God, You said You would answer everything, so why aren’t You giving it to me?” Meanwhile, God delays His answer to ask us thoughtfully: “If I give you this, what will you do with it? What kind of life will it lead to? Will this build you up or harm you?” Even when answers seem delayed, we must not doubt His goodness and love, nor stop praying. Even in unanswered moments, we must hold fast to prayer.

When God did not remove Paul’s illness, Paul did not abandon prayer altogether. Though he stopped asking for physical healing, he continued to kneel before God every moment: “Lord, help me overcome this pain. Let the gospel spread even in these circumstances, and grant me grace to keep the faith while in prison.” He stopped asking for physical healing, but he never stopped trusting God or kneeling before Him. What kind of God is He? He is a God who loves us deeply.

Just as loving parents listen closely to their children’s faint cries, pondering how to give them what is best, God desires to grant us what is truly good. Therefore, instead of losing heart, we must discern His will and never cease to pray. Yet there is something truly marvelous: How does God love us and answer our prayers? We were sinners, harboring thoughts unworthy of being His children, constantly stumbling in sin. How could God love such sinners? Wondrously, it is because Jesus bore the cross for us. He rescued us from the pit of sin and adopted us as children of God.

In that process, God closed His ears to the cry of His Son Jesus, who cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” God surrendered His Son to death on the cross so that He could open His ears to us. Therefore, when we pray today, we pray in the name of Jesus Christ. We approach God relying on the power of His death and His redeeming grace. May our lives be marked by deeper trust and reliance on the Lord, maintaining a rich fellowship and communion with God through an unceasing life of prayer.
