지난 시간에 우리는 바알 선지자와 엘리야의 대결을 살펴보았습니다. 참 하나님이 누군가에 대한 대결이었고요. 그 대결을 통해서 온 이스라엘 백성들이 바알이 우리가 의지할 신이 아니라 참 하나님은 오직 여호와 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 정확하게 깨닫게 되는 그런 세기의 대결이 바알 선지자들과의 대결이었다고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그 일이 마친 다음에 엘리야 선지자는 이제 비가 내리기를 위하여서 기도했는데요. 오늘 본문의 말씀에 엘리야가 이 비가 내리기를 위하여 기도하고 있는 그 장면을 오늘 본문이 기록하고 있습니다. 비가 오지 않는 것은 하나님께서 이스라엘 민족을 책망하고 이스라엘 민족으로 하여금 참 하나님이 누군가 알려주기 위해서 비가 오지 않게 하신 거라고 할 수가 있겠는데요. 이제는 더 이상 비가 오지 않는 것을 지속할 이유가 있을까요? 없을까요? 없습니다.
왜냐하면 모든 이스라엘 민족들이 여호와 하나님이야말로 진짜 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 분명하게 깨달았기 때문에 이제는 기근을 중단하고 하나님께서 비를 내려주셔야 하는 상황에 이르게 된 것이죠. 기근이 있었던 것은 비가 내리지 않았던 것은 그게 목적이 아닙니다. 그게 목적이 아니고 하나님을 알게 하려는 것이 목적이었기 때문에 이제는 기근을 중단할 필요가 있는 것입니다. 하나님께서 어떤 일을 하신다고 한다면 그 일은 우리의 선함에 있습니다. 우리를 괴롭히려고 하는 게 아니에요. 골탕 먹어보라고 하는 게 아니고 선함에 있는 것이죠. 하나님의 모든 역사는 선하고 복된 목적을 가지고 있는 것인데 결국 그 목적을 다 이루었기 때문에 이제는 더 이상 기근을 지속하는 것보다 이제는 비를 내려주셔서 하나님의 은혜를 체험하게 만드는 일이 필요했기 때문에 엘리야 선지자는 갈멜산 위에 엎드려서 하나님 앞에 기도하게 되었습니다. 엘리야 선지자가 기도할 때 무엇으로 기도했을까요?
오늘 본문의 말씀을 보면 어떤 내용으로 기도했는지 기록하고 있지 않습니다. 하지만 어떤 내용으로 기도했을런지는 충분히 예상할 수 있을 것입니다. 어쩌면 하나님을 찬양했을 것 같아요. 그 하나님께서 놀라운 일을 베풀어 주신 것을 생각하며 하나님을 찬양했을 것이고 또 이스라엘 민족이 하나님을 알게 되었다고 하는 것에 감사했을 것이고, 또한 그런 기도를 하는 가운데 이제는 하나님 은혜를 베풀어 주셔서 기근을 멈추고 이제는 비를 내려주셔서 필요한 것들을 공급해 달라고 하는 그런 기도를 간절하게 했었을 것입니다. 엘리야는 무릎 사이에 얼굴을 넣고 땅에 엎드렸는데 비가 오기를 위하여 간절하게 기도하였습니다. 그러면서 자기 사환에게 심부름을 시킨 거죠. 혹시 비가 오나 비가 올 그런 게 보이는가 한번 가서 보라고 했습니다.
저 바다 건너편에 구름이 일어나는 것이 있는지, 구름이 있어야 구름에서 비가 내리는 것이니까 구름이 다가오는 것인지 구름에 그런 가능성이 있는지 알아보고 오라고 했는데 첫 번째 기도하고 알아봤는데 구름이 있습니까? 없습니까? 하나도 없는 겁니다. “선지자님 아무것도 없습니다.” 그래도 엘리야 선지자가 낙망하고 기도하기를 멈춘 것이 아니라 계속해서 일곱 번씩 기도하는 가운데 드디어 마지막 일곱 번째 기도하고 알아보라고 하니까 저 바다 저 멀리서 구름이 보이는데 얼마만큼의 구름이 보입니까? 손바닥만한, 애걔 너무나도 조그마한 구름이 보이는데 놀라운 것은 엘리야 선지자가 그 구름 하나를 보고 이제는 하나님께서 비를 내려주실 거라고 하는 사실을 믿고 아합왕에게 빨리 비를 피하여 먼저 내려가라 권면하고 내려가게 되었다고 하는 이야기가 오늘 본문의 말씀입니다. 엘리야 선지자가 기도하는 가운데 아무런 변화가 없을 때 어쩌면 실망할 수도 있고 기도를 멈출 수도 있었을 것입니다.
왜 하나님께서는 응답하지 않는가, 왜 비를 내려주시지 않는가, 이 정도 기도했으면 하나님께서 응답해 주실 법한데 왜 아무런 응답이 없는가 했을 때 그 마음 가운데 실망스러운 마음이 들 수도 있었을 겁니다. 하지만 실망했나요? 하지 않았나요? 하지 않았습니다. 왜 실망하지 않았을까요? 그것은 하나님이 누군가를 알고 있기 때문에 그렇습니다. 하나님께서 응답하시지 않지만 그러나 그 하나님이 어떤 하나님이에요? 바로 조금 전에 제단의 제물을 불로써 태워버린 하나님, 이스라엘 민족을 사랑하시는 그 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 너무나도 알기 때문에 한두 번 해보고 그냥 포기해 버린 것이 아니라 계속해서 기도하였고 결국 하나님께서 조그마한 사인을 주셨는데 손바닥만한 구름 하나를 보게 되자 이제는 하나님의 역사가 시작되었다고 하는 사실을 깨닫고 이제 내려갔다고 하는 이야기입니다. 우리는 기도하면서 하나님을 신뢰해야 하는데요.
야고보서 1장 6절에서부터 8절 말씀에 보면 이렇게 권면하고 있습니다. “오직 믿음으로 구하고 조금도 의심하지 말라 의심하는 자는 마치 바람에 밀려 요동하는 바다 물결 같으니 이런 사람은 무엇이든지 주께 얻기를 생각하지 말라 두 마음을 품어 모든 일에 정함이 없는 자로다” 우리가 기도할 때 의심할 것이 아니라고 하는 것을 가르쳐 주고 있는 말씀인데요. 그러니까 우리가 기도하면서 우리가 기도하는 그 기도의 제목이 반드시 이루어져야 한다고 확신하는 가운데 기도해야 된다고 하는 그런 의미일까요? 혹시 우리들의 마음 가운데 하나님께서 이런 기도에 응답하지 않을지도 모른다고 하는 불안한 마음이 우리들의 마음 가운데 생기게 되면 그러면 그 기도가 응답되지 않는다고 하는 그런 의미일까요? 우리의 마음이라고 하는 것은 사실 우리가 핸들링 할 수 있는 게 아니죠. 믿고 싶어요. 내가 하나님을 신뢰하고 싶어요.
하나님의 응답이 있을 거라고 믿고 싶지만 그러나 우리들의 마음속에서 솟아오르는 그런 의심, 우리들의 마음속에서 솟아오르는 불안감 이런 것들을 우리의 의지와 능력으로 막을 방법이 없는 거죠. 근데 만일 하나님께서 내 기도에 응답하지 않으면 어떡하지라고 하는 걱정이 조금이라도 생겨버리면 그것은 마치 우리가 밥 짓다가 너무 일찍 뚜껑을 열어버려서 밥을 망치게 되는 것처럼 그렇게 우리의 기도가 완전 망쳐지는 그런 것을, 그런 결과를 가져오게 된다고 하는 그런 의미일까요? 사실은 그렇지 않습니다. 여기서 우리가 의심하지 말라고 하는 것은 우리가 기도하면 반드시 우리가 기도한 대로 이루어질 거라고 하는 사실을 의심하지 말고 기도하라고 하는 그런 의미가 아니라 하나님에 대한 믿음을 의심하지 말라는 겁니다. 하나님에 대한 신뢰가 흔들리지 말라고 하는 거예요. 하나님이 어떤 하나님인가?
하나님이 사랑의 하나님이라는 것, 하나님이 내게 어떤 은혜를 베풀어 주실 건가, 좋은 결과를 주실 것이고 내가 이해할 수 없어도 내게 가장 좋은 것으로 가장 확실한 은혜로 베풀어 주시는 하나님, 내가 기도한 제목보다도 더 크고 놀라운 방향으로, 나는 이렇게 생각했지만 하나님께서 이런 방향으로 틀어주셔도 그러나 나보다 하나님이 더 옳고 하나님의 역사하심이 훨씬 더 옳다고 하는 그런 하나님에 대한 믿음을 잃어버리지 말고 하나님에 대한 신뢰를 의심하지 말라고 하는 그런 의미입니다. 엘리야 선지자는 하나님이 선하신 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 믿었기 때문에 그 앞에서 기도할 수 있었던 것이죠. 그래서 하나님 앞에 기도하는 가운데 하나님께서 보여주시는 작은 구름 한 조각을 보면서 기쁨으로 하나님의 역사하심을 이해하고 그리고 담대하게 내려갈 수가 있었을 것입니다. 사환에게 즉시 가서 구름이 있는가 보라고 했지만 사환은 대답을 합니다. “없습니다. 아무것도 없습니다.”
하지만 마지막에는 작은 구름을 이야기했지만 그러나 엘리야는 확신 가운데 아합왕에게 이제 내려가라고 권고하고 그리고 갈멜산에서 내려올 수 있었습니다. 그래서 비가 왔나요? 오지 않았나요? 오게 되었습니다. 조그마한 구름 한 조각인데 비가 오지 않은 것이 아니라 비가 쏟아졌고 그래서 지금까지 모든 가뭄들을 해결하는 놀라운 은혜를 얻게 된 것입니다. 여기서 우리가 배워야 할 것이 하나 있습니다. 그것은 무엇일까요? 엘리야는 조그마한 구름 한 점만 보아도 하나님의 은혜를 바라볼 수 있었다고 하는 사실입니다. 사실 구름 한 점만 보면 소망이 생깁니까? 의심이 더 많이 생깁니까? 어쩌면 대부분의 사람들은 의심이 더 많이 생길 것 같아요. “애걔, 저거 가지고 하라고? 내게 저거 가지고 어떡하란 말이야?” 그런데 엘리야 선지자는 그 작은 구름을 보면서 하나님이 역사하시는구나를 보았어요. 어쩌면 우리가 이 세상에 살아가면서 바라보아야 할 것이 바로 구름 한 조각입니다.
어쩌면 믿음의 사람의 특징이 무엇인가? 믿음의 사람의 특징은 아무리 작아 보여도 그 안에서 하나님의 은혜를 발견하는 자가 믿음의 사람이야. 다 무너지는 것 같고 다 망가지는 것 같아도 그러나 그루터기 하나를 보면서 ‘하나님께서 남겨주셨구나. 하나님께서 이 작은 무리를 통해서 어마어마한 일을 이루시는구나.’ 하나님의 그 역사를 바라보며, 하나님께서는 무에서 유를 창조하시고 꺼져가는 심지도 끄지 아니하시고, 상한 갈대도 꺾지 아니하시며, 하나님께서 일으키시는 그 놀라운 은혜를 바라볼 수 있는 사람이 믿음의 사람이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 반면에 불신의 사람은 어떤 사람입니까? 아무리 많은 증거를 내밀어도 믿지 않는 사람들이 불신의 사람들입니다. 예수님께서 오셔서 수많은 기적들을 행하셨습니다.
앉아서 일어나지 못하는 장애인을 일으켜 세우시기도 하셨고, 한쪽 손 마른 사람의 손을 펴주시기도 하셨고, 죽은 자를 살리시기도 하셨고, 눈먼 자를 뜨게 하기도 하셨고, 어마어마한 기적들을 많이 행하시는 가운데 수많은 사람들에게 어마어마한 기적을 베풀어 주셨는데, 그 기적을 바라보면서도 바리새인들이 와서 예수님에게 던진 말이 무엇입니까? “선한 선생님, 선생님 우리들에게 표적을 보여주시기를 원하나이다. 하늘로부터 오는 표적 좀 보여주세요. 그러면 믿겠습니다. 하늘로부터 오는 표적을 보여주시면 그러면 우리가 선생님을 인정하겠습니다.” 이게 말이에요, 뭐예요? 말도 안 되는 거죠. 지금까지 한 건 뭐예요? 지금까지 보여주었던 기적이 뭐예요? 어마어마한 기적을 베풀어 주었는데 마치 무엇과 같은가, 우리 아버지 어머니의 사랑과 같은 거죠.
아기가 태어나면서부터 지금까지 헌신을 다해서 우리 아이들을 길러 놓았는데 사춘기에 빠진 우리 아이들이 하는 말이 “엄마는 날 사랑하는 거 맞아? 아빠는 날 사랑하기나 해?”라고 질문을 던지는 것과 같아요.
지금 가만히 보면 모든 곳에 엄마 아빠의 사랑이 다 배어 있는데, 머리끝부터 발끝까지 집안 전체에 아빠 엄마의 사랑이 다 거기에 새겨져 있는데, 엄마가 날 사랑하는 거 맞냐고, 아빠가 날 조금이라도 생각하는 거 맞냐고 따지고 있는 그 아이들의 모습을 보면 답답하기 그지없는 것처럼 바리새인들이 예수님에게 와서 요청하는 겁니다. “하늘로부터 왔다고 하는 증거를 좀 보여주십시오.” 오늘날에도 마찬가지죠. 수많은 불신자들이 이야기를 합니다. “하나님이 계신 증거를 보여주십시오. 하나님이 계신 증거를 보여주면 내가 믿겠습니다.” 그런데 증거가 없는 게 아니고 눈을 감아버린 거죠. 보지 않는 겁니다. 아침에 뜨는 태양 빛과 그리고 시간이 지나면서 변하는 이 계절과 그리고 우리가 지금 이렇게 살아 있다고 하는 그 사실과 그 수많은 그 하나님의 오묘한 섭리들이 온 세상에 가득 펼쳐져 있는데 그것을 눈감아버리고 하나님을 믿지 못하겠다고 하는 것이 불신자의 특징이라고 하겠습니다.
증거가 없는 것이 아니라 증거가 너무 많음에도 불구하고 믿음의 눈으로 보지 않았던 것이죠. 그런데 엘리야는 그 조그마한 구름을 보면서 하나님께서 역사하시는 것을 알았습니다. 그 구름 때문만 알았을까요? 아니요. 지금까지 내가 살아오면서, 지금까지 내가 지내오면서 하나님이 얼마나 큰 사랑을 베풀어 주셨는가, 이스라엘 민족에게 얼마나 놀라운 사랑의 하나님인가 그 모든 사랑들을 다 알기 때문에 그 조그마한 구름이 그냥 구름이 아니라 하나님의 사랑의 구름이라고 하는 것을 알게 되는 줄로 믿습니다. 사랑하는 성도 여러분 오늘 우리들의 마음 가운데 왜 불평이 있습니까? 왜 불만이 있습니까? 그것은 우리가 눈을 감아버렸기 때문에, 왜 우리가 절망이 있습니까? 그것은 하나님의 증거에 우리가 눈을 감아버렸기 때문에 그래요. 우리 아이들의 조그마한 그 구름 한 조각 같은 것을 보고 하나님이 얼마나 사랑하시는가를 보세요.
우리 교회를 향해서 하나님께서 보여주시는 작은 구름 하나 보고 하나님이 얼마나 신실하신 하나님인가를 바라보세요. 우리들의 삶 가운데서 내 발걸음을 한 걸음 한 걸음 인도해 주시는 그 하나님의 놀라운 사랑, 그 작은 증거들을 보는 자에게 복이 있는 줄로 믿습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 아무 증거가 없어도 우리를 사랑하셨어요. 우리는 선함의 증거가 없었어요. 늘 하나님을 배신했어요. 우리에게서 아무런 선한 것이 나오질 않았어요. 완전히 망해져 갈 수밖에 없는 사탄의 자식의 모습만 하고 있었어요. 하지만 하나님께서 우리를 아무런 가치가 없는 사람들이다 하고 내팽개쳐버린 것이 아니라 우리 안에 있는 그 조그마한 구름 한 조각, 우리에게 있는 하나님의 형상으로 지음받은 그 모습 하나를 보시고, 우리를 사랑하셔서 하나님의 자녀로 받아주시고, 우리를 구원하시기 위하여 십자가의 은혜로 저와 여러분들을 구원해 주신 줄로 믿습니다.
사랑하는 우리 성도 여러분, 우리들의 마음 가운데 어떤 생각들이 지배하고 있는지 매 순간순간마다 검토하고 질문해 보았으면 좋겠습니다. 내 마음에 기쁨이 넘치는지 감사가 넘치는지, 찬송이 넘치는지, 아니면 불평과 원망과 시기와 여러 가지 악한 생각들이 우리들의 마음을 지배하고 있는지, 오늘 이 시간 우리가 하나님 앞에 기도하기를 “주님 저희들에게 조그마한 구름 한 조각의 모습을 보면서도 하나님의 놀라운 사랑을 발견할 수 있는 은혜를 더하여 주옵소서” 기도하는 가운데 하나님의 풍성한 은혜를 누리는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Seeing God’s Grace in a Cloud as Small as a Man’s Hand
Last time, we examined the contest between the prophets of Baal and Elijah. It was a confrontation over who the true God is. Through that contest, all the people of Israel came to realize clearly that Baal was not a god to be relied upon, but that the true God is the Lord alone. That showdown with the prophets of Baal was indeed a contest of the century. After that event concluded, the prophet Elijah prayed for rain to fall. Today’s text records the scene where Elijah is praying for this rain. The absence of rain was God’s way of rebuking the nation of Israel and letting them know who the true God is. Now, is there any reason for the drought to continue? No, there is none.
Because all the people of Israel came to realize clearly that the Lord God is the true God, a situation arrived where the drought needed to end and God needed to send rain. The drought—the absence of rain—was not the ultimate purpose. That was not the end goal; making God known was the purpose. Therefore, it was time to end the drought. Whenever God does something, His intent lies in our good. He is not trying to distress us or play tricks on us; His intent is for our good. All of God’s works carry a good and blessed purpose, and since that purpose had been fully accomplished, rather than prolonging the drought, it was time to let them experience God’s grace by sending down rain. Thus, the prophet Elijah bowed down on top of Mount Carmel and prayed before God. When the prophet Elijah prayed, what did he pray for?
The text today does not record the exact contents of his prayer. However, we can easily anticipate what he might have prayed. Perhaps he praised God. Thinking of the marvelous work God had performed, he likely praised Him, expressed gratitude that the nation of Israel had come to know God, and in the midst of such prayer, earnestly asked God to show mercy, end the drought, send rain, and supply what was needed. Elijah bowed down to the earth with his face between his knees and prayed earnestly for rain. He then sent his servant on an errand, telling him to go and see if there was any sign of rain coming.
He told him to check across the sea to see if clouds were rising, since rain falls from clouds, and to see if there was any possibility of clouds approaching. After praying the first time, the servant went to check. Were there any clouds? None at all. “Master, there is nothing.” Yet the prophet Elijah did not lose heart or cease praying; he continued to pray seven times. Finally, after the seventh time, he told the servant to check again, and far across the sea, a cloud appeared. How large was the cloud? It was a cloud as small as a man’s hand—a tiny cloud. Yet remarkably, upon seeing that single cloud, the prophet Elijah believed that God would now send rain, advised King Ahab to go down quickly before the rain stopped him, and went on his way. This is the story of today’s passage. When there was no immediate change while praying, the prophet Elijah could have felt disappointed or stopped praying.
“Why is God not answering? Why is He not sending rain? After praying this much, it would be natural for God to answer, so why is there no response at all?” He could have felt disappointed in his heart. Yet did he lose heart? No, he did not. Why did he not lose heart? Because he knew who God is. Even though God had not yet answered, what kind of God is He? He is the very God who had just consumed the sacrifice on the altar with fire, the God who loves the nation of Israel. Because Elijah knew this so well, he did not give up after trying once or twice, but continued to pray. When God finally gave a small sign—a cloud as small as a man’s hand—he realized that God’s work had begun and went down. We, too, must trust God as we pray.
James 1:6–8 gives us this exhortation: “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” This passage teaches us that we ought not to doubt when we pray. Does this mean we must pray with absolute certainty that the specific topic of our prayer will be fulfilled exactly as requested? Does it mean that if feelings of anxiety arise—worrying that God might not answer this prayer—our prayer will be completely ruined as a result? Our emotions are not something we can easily handle or control. We want to believe; we want to trust God.
We want to believe that God’s answer will come, yet there are times when doubt and anxiety well up within our hearts beyond our ability or willpower to suppress. If a sliver of anxiety enters our mind—worrying, “What if God does not answer my prayer?”—does that mean our prayer is completely ruined, just as lifting the lid too early while cooking rice ruins the rice? In truth, that is not what it means. When the passage tells us not to doubt, it does not mean we must never doubt that things will happen precisely as we requested; rather, it means we must not doubt our faith in God. It means our trust in God must remain unshaken. What kind of God is He?
He is a God of love, and He will bestow grace upon us. He will grant a good outcome, and even when we cannot understand, He will bestow what is best for us with the most certain grace. Even if He directs things in a direction far greater and more surprising than what we originally prayed for—turning things in a different way than we thought—we must retain the faith that God is right and that His working is far better. That is what it means not to doubt our trust in God. Because the prophet Elijah believed that God is good, he was able to pray before Him. As he prayed, seeing that tiny cloud God showed him, he understood God’s working with joy and could go down with confidence. He told his servant to go look for clouds immediately, but the servant replied, “There is nothing. Nothing at all.”
Yet in the end, when the servant mentioned the small cloud, Elijah advised King Ahab with full conviction to go down, and he himself came down from Mount Carmel. So did the rain come or not? It came. It started with a tiny cloud, but instead of failing to rain, the heavens opened up with a downpour, bringing remarkable grace that resolved the long drought. There is something we must learn here. What is it? Elijah was able to discern God’s grace even upon seeing a tiny cloud as small as a man’s hand. Honestly, when people see a single tiny cloud, does it bring hope, or does it bring more doubt? For most people, it would likely bring more doubt. “What? How am I supposed to rely on that tiny thing?” Yet the prophet Elijah looked at that small cloud and recognized, “God is at work.” Perhaps what we need to look for as we live in this world is precisely that small cloud.
What is the defining characteristic of a person of faith? A person of faith is one who discovers God’s grace within something, no matter how small it may appear. Even when everything seems to be collapsing and breaking down, they look at a single stump and think, ‘God has left a remnant! God is going to accomplish something immense through this small group!’ Looking at God’s work, a person of faith is one who beholds the wondrous grace of the God who creates out of nothing, who will not quench a smoldering wick or break a bruised reed. Conversely, what characterizes an unbeliever? An unbeliever is someone who refuses to believe no matter how much evidence is presented. When Jesus came, He performed countless miracles.
He made the lame walk, restored withered hands, raised the dead, and gave sight to the blind. He performed immense miracles among countless people, yet upon seeing those very miracles, what did the Pharisees come and say to Jesus? “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you. Show us a sign from heaven, and then we will believe. Show us a sign from heaven, and then we will acknowledge you.” Is that reasonable? It makes no sense at all. What about everything He had done up to that point? What were all those miracles He had already shown? It is just like the love of parents.
Parents devote themselves to raising their children from the moment they are born, yet when those children enter adolescence, they ask, “Mom, do you really love me? Dad, do you even care about me at all?”
If you look closely, the love of their mother and father is woven into every detail of their lives—from head to toe, etched into the entire home. Yet seeing children question whether their parents love them or care about them is deeply frustrating. In the same way, the Pharisees came to Jesus demanding, “Show us proof that you came from heaven.” It is the same today. Many unbelievers say, “Show me proof that God exists. If you show me proof that God exists, then I will believe.” Yet it is not that evidence is lacking; rather, they have closed their eyes. They refuse to see. The morning sunlight, the changing seasons as time passes, the very fact that we are alive right now, and the countless intricate providences of God displayed throughout the entire world—they close their eyes to all of it and claim they cannot believe in God. That is the mark of an unbeliever.
It is not that evidence is absent, but that despite an abundance of proof, they refuse to look with eyes of faith. Yet Elijah, upon seeing that tiny cloud, knew that God was at work. Did he know it only because of that cloud? No. He knew how much love God had shown him throughout his life, and what a God of marvelous love He had been to the nation of Israel. Because he knew all that love, he recognized that the small cloud was not just an ordinary cloud, but a cloud of God’s love. Dear brothers and sisters, why is there complaining in our hearts today? Why is there dissatisfaction? It is because we have closed our eyes. Why do we experience despair? It is because we have closed our eyes to the evidence of God. Look at even a tiny cloud in the lives of our children and see how deeply God loves them.
Look at a single small cloud that God shows our church and behold how faithful God is. Blessed are those who see the small tokens of God’s wonderful love guiding their steps day by day. God loved us even when we offered no evidence of goodness. We had no proof of righteousness; we constantly betrayed God. Nothing good came from us, and we lived like children of Satan destined for ruin. Yet God did not cast us aside as worthless; rather, looking at the tiny cloud within us—the image of God in which we were created—He loved us, received us as His children, and redeemed us through the grace of the cross.
My dear brothers and sisters, I hope we examine and question what thoughts dominate our minds moment by moment. Is our heart overflowing with joy, gratitude, and praise, or is it consumed by complaining, resentment, envy, and evil thoughts? May we pray before God today: “Lord, grant us the grace to discover Your marvelous love even when looking at a tiny cloud as small as a man’s hand.” As we pray, may we all come to enjoy the abundant grace of God.
