오늘 계속해서 열왕기상의 말씀을 묵상하면서 은혜를 나누고자 합니다. 오바댜의 안내로 드디어 아합왕과 엘리야가 만난 이야기가 오늘 간단하게 기록이 되어 있습니다. 아합왕이 엘리야를 3년 반 만에 만나게 되자 기뻤을까요? 기뻤을까요? 아닐 것 같습니다. 너무나도 미울 것이고 그 속에 원망이 가득 차 있는 상황 가운데서, 엘리야를 보면서 나온 말이 오늘 읽은 열왕기상 18장 17절의 말씀 가운데 기록되어 있습니다.
17절 말씀을 보면 “엘리야를 볼 때에 아합이 그에게 이르되 이스라엘을 괴롭게 하는 자여 너냐” 하고 나옵니다. 엘리야라는 이름이 있는데 엘리야의 이름을 부른 것이 아니라 별명을 가지고 부른 것입니다. “너, 괴롭게 하는 자여.” “우리를 힘들게 하는 자여, 너 때문에 우리가 힘들다, 너 때문에 우리가 고난을 당한다” 하는 그런 원망과 불평의 마음이 가득 담겨 있는 별명을 가지고 엘리야 선지자를 부른 것이라고 할 수 있겠습니다.
어떻게 보면 엘리야 때문에 비가 오지 않은 것이라고 할 수가 있겠고, 그래서 비가 오지 아니함으로 말미암아 3년 반 동안 물 없이 이렇게 고통 가운데 지나게 되었다고 하는 것을 생각해 보면, 너무나도 화가 났기 때문에 이런 표현이 나온 것이라고 할 수 있겠습니다. 3년 반 동안 비가 안 오면 도대체 어떤 상황일까요? 우리들로서는 도무지 상상할 수도 없을 겁니다. 지금 우리나라에도, 우리나라가 아니고 우리 전북 지방에도 비가 잘 안 왔죠. 오늘 아침에 비가 조금 왔었는데 이것 가지고는 택도 없을 것 같습니다. 최근에 뉴스에 의하면 붕어섬이 광어섬이 되었다고 합니다.
조그만 붕어섬인데 물이 없어서 붕어섬이 커져가지고 광어섬이 됐다라고 하는 그런 뉴스가 나오게 되었는데, 이렇게 한두 달 비가 안 오고 한 몇 달 비가 안 온 것만 가지고도 참 어려움을 겪고… 농사짓는 사람들은 늘 하늘을 의지해서 농사를 짓는 것인데, 금년에 채소 물가가 비싸지지 않을까 김장을 앞에 두고 또 추석을 앞에 두고 참 걱정이 태산이 되는 것 같습니다.
그래도 오늘날에는 비가 오지 않더라도 그 비가 오지 않는 문제를 해결할 수 있어서, 그나마 이런 방법 저런 방법을 통해서… 그래도 수돗물이 안 나오지는 않으시죠? 혹시 안 나오는 집 있습니까? 나오지요. 다행인 거죠. 지금 우리가 21세기에 살고 있는 것이 너무나도 감사한 것이죠. 하지만 이 당시, 지금으로부터 수천 년 전 이스라엘 땅에는 당시에 무슨 빗물 저장 시설이 변변한 게 있었겠습니까?
3년 반 동안 비가 오지 않는다고 한다면 다 말라비틀어져 버리고 농사도 다 망쳐버리고 먹을 것이 없고, 완전히 이제 죽기 일보 직전의 상황까지 치닫게 되는 그런 엄청난, 그야말로 엄청난 재난이 이스라엘 땅 가운데 있게 될 때에 이 재앙으로 말미암아 너무나도 불평과 불만, 그리고 분노가 치밀어 솟구쳐 올랐을 거라고 생각이 됩니다.
하지만 이 모든 문제가 엘리야 때문에 그런 것일까요? 엘리야 때문입니까? 아닙니다. 어쩌면 엘리야 때문에 우리가 고생한다고 생각할 수 있을 것 같아요. 엘리야가 비가 오지 않는다고 선언했기 때문에 그렇습니다. 언제 선언했습니까? 열왕기상 17장 1절 말씀에 보면 엘리야 선지자가 선언합니다. “길르앗에 우거하는 자 중에 디셉 사람 엘리야가 아합에게 말하되 내가 섬기는 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내 말이 없으면 수년 동안 비도 이슬도 있지 아니하리라 하니라.”
엘리야의 입에서 예언이 나왔기 때문에 “엘리야 때문에 우리가 고난을 당한다”고 이야기하고 있지만, 사실은 이러한 재앙을 불러일으킨 것은 엘리야입니까? 누구입니까? 아합왕이었다고 할 수가 있는 것이죠. 왜냐하면 아합왕과 또한 이스라엘 민족이 살아 계신 하나님을 버리고, 그리고 바알 신에게로, 우상에게로 향해버렸기 때문에 그렇습니다.
그런데 자신의 문제를 눈감아버리고 모든 문제를 엘리야 탓으로 돌려버리는 이 아합왕의 모습을 볼 때 너무나도 안타까운 것이죠. 이때라도 회개하고, 이때라도 ‘아, 내가 잘못했구나’ 깨닫고 하나님 앞으로 돌아온다고 한다면… 그러면 하나님은 어떤 하나님이실까요? “안 돼, 내가 몇 년 동안 비 안 내리게 하겠다고 했으니까 회개하든 말든 끝까지 비가 안 올 거야”라고 하시는 하나님일까요? 하나님이 그런 하나님이세요? 아니에요. 하나님은 어떤 하나님이신가?
은혜로우시고 자비로우시고 인자가 많으셔서, 울며 회개하며 돌아오는 자들에게는 은혜를 베푸사 한없는 하나님의 사랑으로 감싸시고, 치셨으나 도로 싸매시고 찢으셨으나 도로 아물게 하시는 그 놀라운 은혜의 하나님이기 때문에, 하나님에게로 돌아온다고 한다면 주님께서 놀라운 은혜를 베풀어 주셨을 것이라고 믿습니다.
하지만 안타깝게도 아합왕은, 그리고 이스라엘 민족은 자신들의 죄에 대해서 눈을 감아버렸습니다. 자신의 잘못에 대해서는 생각지 않고, 모든 재난의 원인을 엘리야에게 덮어씌우면서 비난하고 있는 것이 바로 아합왕의 모습이라고 하겠습니다. 어쩌면 이게 오늘날 우리들의 모습입니다. 우리 인간의 죄성으로 가득한, 참 피할 수 없는 연약한 모습이라고 할 수가 있는 거죠.
성경에 보면 사울왕도 그렇게 했습니다. 전쟁을 하는 가운데 하나님께서 응답하시지 않게 되자 사울왕은 생각했습니다. ‘이 죄가 누구에게 있나 한번 따져보자.’ 따져볼 필요가 있어요, 없어요? 없어요. 누가 회개하면 돼요? 내가 회개하면 돼요. 내가 하나님 앞에 잘못한 게 뭐가 있는지, 하나님 앞에 내가 회개할 것이 있으면 회개하면 되는 것인데, 사울왕은 그 순간에 “이 죄가 누구에게 있는가 한번 따져보자” 했습니다. 제비를 뽑으니까 그 제비가 누구에게 떨어져요? 자기 아들 요나단에게 떨어지는 거죠.
어쩌면 이게 우리 인생의 연약한 모습이라고 할 수 있을 텐데요. 그 옛날 아담과 하와가 선악과를 먹고 범죄하였을 때에도 아담은 그 책임을 자신에게서 발견하는 것이 아니라 다른 사람에게 덮어씌우고, 심지어 누구에게까지 덮어씌우는가? 하나님에게까지 책임을 뒤집어씌우는 거죠. 창세기 3장 12절 말씀에 “아담이 이르되 하나님이 주셔서 나와 함께 있게 하신 여자 그가 그 나무 열열매를 내게 줌으로 내가 먹었나이다.” 하와 잘못이에요? 하와를 만든 하나님 잘못이에요?
이게 내 잘못이 아니라 다른 사람을 향해서, 심지어 하나님을 향해서 원망하고 있는 게 바로 우리 인생의 어리석은 모습이라고 하겠습니다. 어려움이 오게 된 그 원인을 다른 사람에게서 찾는 그런 모습… 우리 인간들의 모습은 나이가 많으나 적으나 다 마찬가지죠. 우리 아이들의 입에서 “이게 다 엄마 탓이야, 이게 다 아빠 때문이야”라고 하는 소리들을 들으면서 사는 것이고, 축구팀이 지면 “이게 다 감독 때문이야”, 나라가 잘못되면 “이게 다 대통령 때문이야, 모든 지도자 때문이야”… 맞는 말일 겁니다. 책임이 없다고 할 수가 없죠. 하지만 다른 사람에게서 문제를 찾기 전에 내가 하나님 앞에 엎드려야 할 것이고, 이럴 때마다 우리가 가져야 될 성경적인 자세가 있다고 한다면, 내게 부족한 것이 무엇이었고 내가 바르게 행하지 못한 것이 무엇인가를 점검하면서 하나님 앞에 우리 자신을 되돌아보고 회개하며 엎드리는 그런 결단들이 우리 모두에게 있을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
아합왕은 눈을 감아버린 것이고, 제대로 진단을 하지 못했기 때문에 진단이 제대로 안 되면 치료가 제대로 되지 않습니다. 그래서 병원에 가면 제일 먼저 하는 게 뭡니까? 진단부터 하는 거예요. 우리들의 마음 가운데는 ‘굳이 MRI를 꼭 찍어야 될 필요가 있을까, 굳이 이런 검사까지 해야 될 필요가 있을까’라고 하는 생각이 드시죠. ‘이거 과잉 진료 아닌가’라는 생각이 들어요. 하지만 검사해야 진단하고, 진단해야 치료할 수 있고, 제대로 된 진단 가운데 제대로 된 치유가 나올 수 있기 때문에 제대로 된 진단이 우리들에게 필요한 것인데, 영적인 면에서도 마찬가지예요.
우리가 제대로 진단해야 거기서 희망이 보이고, 제대로 진단해야 우리가 소망을 얻는 것인데, 눈 감아버리고 진단해야 될 것을 진단하지 않고 엉뚱한 데만 긁고 있다고 한다면… 다른 사람들을 향한 비난과 원망, “다 니 책임이다”, “다 이건 당신 딸의 잘못이다” 비난하는 그 순간에 문제의 해결은 되지 않고 오히려 더 상황을 악화시키는 그런 잘못된 결과를 가져오게 될 것이라고 믿습니다.
예전에 3층 공간 화장실에서 냄새가 엄청나게 났습니다. 악취가 났습니다. 혹시 알고 계십니까? 잘 모르시죠? 근데 화장실에서 악취가 안 나는 것 같아. 저는 늘 앉아 있으니까 냄새가 안 나는 것 같은데, 제 방에 들어오는 사람들마다 “아, 이거 무슨 냄새예요? 목사님, 이거 나한테서 나는 냄새라고 할 수도 없고 이게 도대체 무슨 냄새입니까?” 막 그러는데 냄새를 잡을 수가 없는 거예요.
급기야 많은 분들이 처방전을 가지고 왔습니다. 어떤 집사님이 하수구 막는 그것을 가지고 왔어요. “목사님, 이 하수구 이것을 사용하시면 냄새가 전혀 나지 않고 벌레가 한 마리도 올라오지 않고, 잘 막아뒀다가 물이 내려갈 때만 내려가고 물이 내려간 다음에 다시 막히고 해서 냄새가 하나도 안 나요. 우리 집에서 효과를 본 하수구 마개입니다” 하면서 비싼 거 사가지고 설치해 줬어요. 이제 해결이 되나 했더니 해결이 됐을까요? 안 됐을까요? 안 됐습니다.
냄새가 또 나는 거야. ‘이거 도대체…’ 그래서 사용한 방법은 물을 뿌렸습니다. 그냥 이 뚜껑 막는 것만 가지고는 냄새를 못 막으니까 그 위에 물을 좀 뿌려놓아서 물이 그 위에 있으면 물에 의해서 막혀서 냄새가 안 나겠지… 그래서 볼 때마다 물을 계속 부어서 물이 그 위에 있도록, 냄새가 올라오지 않게 하수구 냄새가 전혀 올라오지 않도록 계속해서 막는 데 성공했겠지요? 성공 안 했어요. 냄새가 계속 났어요.
어떻게 해야 됩니까? 할 수 없이 전문가를 불렀습니다. 전문가를 불렀더니 그 전문가가 와서 쓱 보더니만 “하수구가 문제가 아니라 변기가 문제입니다. 변기가 새는 거예요.” 그 악취가 하수구 냄새가 아니고 그거 냄새였어.
결국 그분이 다 변기 드러내고 다시 다 공사를 처음부터 해서 변기를 제자리에 다 앉히고, 그리고 실리콘으로 막고 해놓으니까 지금은 예전보다 냄새가 안 납니다. ‘할렐루야’ 해야 되는 거 아니에요?
문제의 원인을 잘못 진단하니까 아무리 해도 해결이 안 되는 거예요. 오늘 읽은 열왕기상 18장 18절 말씀에서 이렇게 엘리야가 대답합니다. “그가 대답하되 내가 이스라엘을 괴롭게 한 것이 아니라 당신과 당신의 아버지의 집이 괴롭게 하였으니 이는 여호와의 명령을 버렸고 당신이 바알들을 따랐음이라.”
우리의 문제가 어디에 있는가? 우리가 참되신 하나님, 우리에게 참된 은혜를 베풀어 주시는 그 하나님을 버리고 우리가 헛된, 아무것도 도움이 될 수 없는 우상을 따랐기 때문에 이런 문제들이 생기는 것이죠. 어쩌면 우리들의 삶도 마찬가지일 겁니다. 우리는 하나님을 믿는다고 하면서도 사실은 하나님을 믿는 것이 아니라 재물을 우상처럼 섬기는 경우가 많이 있고, 내 명예나 자존심을 나의 우상으로 섬기면서 그것이 나를 행복하게 해줄까 하고 거기에 매여 달리는 경우가 너무나도 많습니다.
오늘 우리들의 삶을 판단해 보면서 혹시라도 내가 하나님에게서부터 멀어진 부분이 있다고 한다면, 오늘 이 시간 하나님 앞으로 돌아오고 하나님의 은혜를 구하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
“천부여 의지 없어서 손들고 나옵니다” 하고 하나님 앞에 고백할 때, 하나님께서는 우리를 외면하시는 것이 아니라 우리가 바로 그런 모습을 가지고 있기 때문에 예수님께서 오셨고 우리를 위하여 피 흘려주셨고 우리를 회복시키기를 원하고 계십니다. 그래서 매 순간순간마다 하나님 앞에 손들고 돌아가고, 제대로 된 영적인 문제를 진단하면서 나와 하나님과의 관계가 바로 서기를 원합니다. 늘 소망 가운데 주님께로 돌아가는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
True Diagnosis and Returning to God
Today, as we continue to meditate on 1 Kings, I would like to share the grace of God with you. Guided by Obadiah, the story of King Ahab and Elijah finally meeting is briefly recorded today.
When King Ahab met Elijah for the first time in three and a half years, do you think he was glad? Was he happy? I don’t think so. He must have hated him so much, with resentment filling his heart. In that state, the words he blurted out upon seeing Elijah are recorded in 1 Kings 18:17, which we read today.
Verse 17 says, “When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, ‘Is it you, you troubler of Israel?'” Elijah had a name, but Ahab did not call him by his name; instead, he called him by a nickname: “You troubler.” It was a nickname full of resentment and complaint, meaning, “You who make things hard for us! Because of you, we are struggling. Because of you, we are suffering!”
In a way, it seemed as if the rain had stopped because of Elijah, and as a result, they had to go through three and a half years of agonizing hardship without water. When we think about that, he was so angry that such an expression came out. What on earth would it be like if it didn’t rain for three and a half years? We probably can’t even imagine it. Even nowadays, in our Jeonbuk region, we haven’t had much rain. It rained a little this morning, but this isn’t nearly enough. According to recent news, Bungeo Island (Crucian Carp Island) has turned into Gwangeo Island (Flatfish Island). It used to be a small island shaped like a crucian carp, but because of the drought, the water dried up and the island expanded so much that it looks like a flatfish now.
Having no rain for just a month or two, or a few months, causes so much hardship. Farmers who always depend on the heavens to farm are deeply worried. With the Kimjang season and Chuseok coming up, they worry that vegetable prices will skyrocket.
Still, nowadays, even if it doesn’t rain, we have ways to solve the problem through various methods. Tap water still comes out at your homes, right? Is there any house where tap water doesn’t come out? It comes out, right? What a relief! How thankful we are to be living in the 21st century. But back in those days, thousands of years ago in the land of Israel, what proper rainwater storage facilities could they possibly have had?
If it didn’t rain for three and a half years, everything would wither away, crops would be ruined, there would be no food, and people would be pushed to the brink of death. When such a massive, literally catastrophic disaster hit the land of Israel, complaints, discontent, and rage must have boiled up within them due to this calamity.
But was all of this really because of Elijah? Is Elijah to blame? No. People might think, “We are suffering because of Elijah,” simply because Elijah declared that there would be no rain. When did he declare it? In 1 Kings 17:1, the prophet Elijah declares: “Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, ‘As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.'”
Because the prophecy came from Elijah’s mouth, they said, “We are suffering because of Elijah.” But who was it that actually brought about this disaster? Was it Elijah? Who was it? It was King Ahab. Why? Because King Ahab and the people of Israel abandoned the living God and turned toward Baal, toward idols.
Yet, it is so tragic to see King Ahab closing his eyes to his own sins and blaming Elijah for every problem. If only he had repented right then—if only he had realized, “Ah, I was wrong,” and returned to God… What kind of God would he have found? Would God say, “No way! I said I wouldn’t send rain for several years, so whether you repent or not, it won’t rain until the end”? Is God like that? No! What kind of God is He?
He is gracious, merciful, and abounding in steadfast love. To those who weep, repent, and return, He bestows grace and wraps them in His boundless love. Though He has torn, He will heal us; though He has struck us down, He will bind us up. Because He is a God of such amazing grace, I believe that if they had returned to Him, the Lord would have poured out His wonderful grace upon them.
Unfortunately, King Ahab and the nation of Israel turned a blind eye to their own sins. Without giving a single thought to his own faults, King Ahab pinned the blame for the entire disaster on Elijah and condemned him. Perhaps this is also a reflection of who we are today. It shows the unavoidable, fragile nature of human beings filled with sin.
In the Bible, King Saul acted the same way. When God did not answer him during a war, King Saul thought, “Let’s find out who holds the guilt for this.” Did he really need to investigate that? No, he didn’t. Who needed to repent? He just needed to repent himself! All he needed to do was ask himself what he had done wrong before God and repent. But in that moment, King Saul said, “Let us find out who is at fault.” And when they cast lots, on whom did the lot fall? It fell on his own son, Jonathan.
Perhaps this is the weak, frail reality of human life. Long ago, when Adam and Eve sinned by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Adam did not look for the responsibility within himself. Instead, he shifted the blame onto someone else, and even blamed God Himself. In Genesis 3:12, “The man said, ‘The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.'” Was it Eve’s fault? Was it God’s fault for making Eve?
Instead of admitting, “This is my fault,” blaming others and even resenting God—this is the foolish reality of human life. Looking for the cause of our hardships in other people… This human tendency is the same whether we are old or young. We live listening to our children say, “This is all Mom’s fault! This is all because of Dad!” If a soccer team loses, they say, “It’s all because of the coach.” If the country struggles, they say, “It’s all because of the president, all because of the leaders.” That might be partly true; they are not without responsibility.
However, before pointing fingers at others, I must fall on my knees before God. Whenever times like these come, if there is a biblical attitude we must take, it is to examine what was lacking in us, what we failed to do rightly, reflect on ourselves before God, repent, and bow down before Him. May all of us make such a decision, in the name of the Lord.
King Ahab closed his eyes to the truth, and because he failed to make a proper diagnosis, proper treatment could not follow. When you go to the hospital, what is the very first thing they do? They start with a diagnosis. In our minds, we often think, “Do I really need to get an MRI? Do I really need to go through all these tests? Isn’t this over-treatment?” But you must be tested to get a diagnosis, and you must have a diagnosis to receive treatment. Only through a proper diagnosis can a proper cure emerge. Therefore, a proper diagnosis is necessary for us.
The same is true in our spiritual lives. When we diagnose ourselves properly, we can see hope and gain assurance. But if we close our eyes, fail to examine what needs to be examined, and keep scratching the wrong spot… continuously blaming others with “It’s all your fault!” or “This is all your daughter’s fault!”—in that very moment, the problem will not be solved; instead, it will only worsen the situation.
In the past, there was a terrible odor coming from the restroom on the 3rd floor. It smelled awful. Did you know about it? You might not know. But to me, sitting in my office all the time, it didn’t seem like the smell was coming from the restroom. Yet everyone who entered my room said, “Oh, what is this smell? Pastor, I can’t even say this smell is coming from me… What on earth is this?” But we couldn’t catch the source of the smell.
Eventually, many people brought remedies. A deacon brought a drain stopper and said, “Pastor, if you use this drain stopper, no smell will come up at all, not a single bug will climb up, and it stays tightly sealed until water goes down. It opens only when water flows and closes right after, so no smell comes out. This is the very drain stopper that worked wonders at my house!” He bought an expensive one and installed it for me. We thought, ‘Will it be fixed now?’ Was it fixed, or not? It wasn’t fixed.
The smell came right back. ‘What on earth…?’ So the next method we tried was pouring water. Thinking that the cover alone couldn’t stop the smell, we poured water on top so that the standing water would block the odor. So every time I saw it, I kept pouring water so that water remained on top, trying to completely block the drain smell from rising. Did we succeed? We did not. The smell kept coming back.
What should we do? We had no choice but to call an expert. The expert came, took one look, and said, “The drain isn’t the problem; the toilet is the problem. The toilet is leaking.” That foul odor wasn’t from the drain—it was coming from the toilet!
In the end, he removed the entire toilet, redid the whole installation from scratch, set the toilet properly in place, and sealed it with silicone. Now, it smells much better than before. Shouldn’t we say “Hallelujah” to that?
Because the cause of the problem was misdiagnosed, no matter what we tried, it couldn’t be resolved. In 1 Kings 18:18, which we read today, Elijah answers like this: “And he answered, ‘I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals.'”
Where does our problem lie? These problems arise because we abandoned the true God who bestows genuine grace upon us, and instead followed empty idols that offer no help whatsoever.
Perhaps our lives are the same. Even while claiming to believe in God, we often do not truly trust Him; instead, we serve wealth like an idol, or worship our honor and self-esteem as our idols, clinging desperately to them thinking they will make us happy.
As we examine our lives today, if there is any area where we have drifted away from God, I pray in the name of the Lord that all of us may return to God at this very hour and seek His grace.
When we confess before God, “Father, I come with open hands, having nothing else to rely on,” God does not turn away from us. It is precisely because we are like this that Jesus came, shed His blood for us, and desires to restore us. Therefore, in every single moment, let us return to God with surrender, properly diagnose our spiritual condition, and align our relationship with Him. May all of us continually return to the Lord in hope, in the name of the Lord.
