Make the Most of Your Time

Ephesians 5:16–20

It is truly amazing, isn’t it? What is so amazing? It is amazing that we are already in the middle of November. It seems that we have accomplished nothing this year, and yet time is passing so quickly as we approach the end of another year. Isn’t that amazing?

For those of us who are experiencing how quickly time passes, there is a remarkable exhortation addressed to us in Ephesians chapter 5. It is found in verse 16:

“Making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

Perhaps this is one of the most important passages we need to remember in this particular moment in history. I would like us to meditate together on this command to make the most of our time and share in the grace of God.

But how can we make the most of our time? What does it actually mean to make the most of something? Does it mean not using it? Is that how we save something? Of course not. Making the most of something does not mean leaving it unused.

Suppose parents buy their children a box of crayons so that they can draw beautiful pictures at school. Would it make sense for the children to save those crayons by never using them? No. The purpose of buying the crayons was not for the children to leave them untouched, but to use them enthusiastically to create wonderful pictures.

What if you bought a car, but because you wanted to take good care of it, you never drove it? Would that really mean you were making the most of your car? Not at all. What does it mean to make the most of something? It does not mean avoiding its use. It means making the best possible use of it.

Isn’t the same true of money? We are supposed to be careful with our money. But what does it mean to save money? Does it mean simply putting it in a bank account and never touching it? Of course, that might be better than spending it recklessly. But businesspeople and those who run companies do not simply leave all their money sitting in the bank. They put it to work. They invest it, make use of it, and when necessary, even borrow money to expand their business. They use their money in various ways to make it productive. In a sense, making good use of money is how we preserve and increase its value.

What about food ingredients? How can we make the most of them? Should we simply leave them untouched because they are precious? No. You know what happens when you try to save something for too long. Eventually, it simply goes bad and disappears. What should we do instead? We should prepare delicious meals while the ingredients are still fresh and serve them to others. Making good use of ingredients while they are at their freshest is the best way to make the most of them.

The same principle applies to time. Making the most of our time does not mean doing nothing. Time passes for everyone, whether we remain still or keep ourselves busy. It continues to move forward regardless of what we do. So how can we make the most of the time God has given us? I hope that as we meditate on this question together today, we will experience the grace of God.

God not only tells us to make the most of our time; He also teaches us how to do it. Look at Ephesians 5:17. It says:

“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

If there is a key to making the most of our time, it is learning to discern the will of God. God has a plan for us. He has instructions concerning how He wants us to live. To make the most of our time means discerning His will, understanding what He desires for us, and living according to that will.

Why is this so important? Because God is our Creator, and He knows us better than anyone else. Who knows us best? God does. He is the God who knows us better than we know ourselves. He understands us perfectly. He knows what is truly best for our lives. And He has a purpose and a will for each of us. Therefore, discerning and understanding His will, and then aligning our lives with it, is the way to make the most of our time.

These days, when we order certain products, they do not always arrive fully assembled. Instead, they are delivered as individual parts that we have to put together ourselves. This is especially true when we order furniture or certain kinds of equipment. Have you ever ordered something like that?

I have, too. Sometimes I try to assemble things myself. As I look at the different parts, I think, “Well, if I put them together this way, it should work.” So I begin assembling them without carefully reading the instructions. But what happens? Things do not go as smoothly as I expected. At some point, I get stuck. I thought this was the right way to do it, but it turns out that it is not. I cannot put it together that way.

So what do I have to do? I have to take everything apart. I start all over again, undoing everything I have done. Then I look at the instruction manual and begin assembling the pieces again. Now, how much longer does this process take compared with following the manual carefully from the beginning, step by step? Does it take twice as long? Three times as long?

Three times as long! Once to assemble it incorrectly, once to take it apart, and once more to assemble it properly. That makes three times. If I had simply followed the instructions carefully from the beginning, I would have saved a great deal of time.

Trying to assemble something quickly without reading the instructions does not necessarily save time. Reading the manual carefully and following it one step at a time may seem slow. It may even look as though we are taking the long way around or moving too cautiously. But in reality, that is how we save time. I myself often make the mistake of skipping the instructions and trying to do things my own way. Then I end up repeating the same work several times.

The same principle applies to our lives. How can we make the most of the time we have been given? We can do so by living according to the manual God has given us. When we live according to God’s instructions and follow the guidance He gives us, we can avoid unnecessary mistakes and many problems. We can live our lives in the right way. But when we ignore God’s will and simply do whatever we want, following our own desires, we eventually end up regretting our decisions. Our lives become damaged, and we discover that we have wasted precious time.

Perhaps one of the clearest examples of this is the story recorded in Numbers chapters 13 and 14. The people of Israel had been delivered from Egypt and were on their way to the land of Canaan. At last, they had arrived right at the border of the Promised Land. They were standing just outside Canaan. All they had to do was enter the land and take possession of it. The land flowing with milk and honey, which God had promised them, was right before their eyes. God had promised to give them that land. All they had to do was go in and take possession of it.

But at that moment, ten of the twelve spies returned and began giving a negative report about the land. What kind of land was Canaan? They admitted that it was indeed a wonderful land. It was a land flowing with milk and honey. It had abundant food and was an incredibly rich and fertile land, like a treasure. But then they added one serious problem: “Who lives there now? The Canaanite people have been living there for a long time. They have built fortified cities and have many soldiers. If we go there and fight them, we have no chance of winning. We are nothing more than an unorganized group of people compared with them. If we go in, we will be destroyed. We will lose the battle. We cannot defeat them. In their eyes, we are like grasshoppers.” That was the negative report given by the ten spies.

Now, was their report false? Were they lying? Or were they simply reporting the facts as they had seen them? Actually, they were reporting the facts accurately. They were not lying. The Canaanites really were living there. They had built fortified cities. There were powerful and physically imposing people living in the land, and they had many soldiers. So the report was accurate.

But what should they have remembered at that very moment? They should have remembered God’s promise. When God led the Israelites out of Egypt, He never said, “I am going to take you to an empty wilderness where no one lives.” He did not promise, “I will lead you to an uninhabited land where you can simply move in and take possession of it without any resistance.” What God had promised was that He would bring them into the land of Canaan, a land occupied by the Perizzites, the Hivites, and many other nations who were already living there.

So if they discovered that powerful and imposing nations were living in the land, what conclusion should they have reached? “This is it! This must be the very land God promised to give us!” They should have recognized that this was exactly what God had promised. All they needed to do was trust His promise, enter the land, and take possession of it.

Sadly, however, the people of Israel rejected God’s will at that very moment. They began to panic. “This is a disaster!” they thought. They became discouraged and pessimistic. They wept, complained, and grumbled against God. And you know what happened as a result. Because of that failure, the Israelites had to spend forty years wandering in the wilderness. What a tragic consequence!

We must understand God’s will correctly. Perhaps the same principle applies to the journey of our own lives. When God leads us along our life’s journey, He never promises that He will always lead us along an easy and comfortable path. He never promises that we will walk along a smooth road without problems, pain, or obstacles.

What can we expect to find in our lives? Will there be obstacles? Will there be painful experiences? Of course. Life is not always easy. Even in marriage, there are not only happy and joyful moments. There will also be times when things trouble us deeply and our hearts become burdened. As we go through life, we will encounter painful experiences. There will be obstacles standing in front of us.

But when we face those obstacles, we must not become discouraged and give up. Instead, we should say, “This is the very place God has brought me to so that I may enter in and overcome. God has led me here. He will give me victory even here.” We need to make a decision of faith: to trust God, depend on Him, and move forward in obedience.

If we want to make the most of our time, we must discern and understand God’s will and obey His Word. But how can we obey God’s will? How can we live according to what God desires? Look at Ephesians 5:18, which we read today. It gives us this instruction:

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

The passage tells us not to get drunk on wine. I believe, however, that this instruction is not merely about whether or not we drink alcohol. Rather, it teaches us something much deeper about the kind of lives we are supposed to live. If we are truly living according to God’s will, pursuing a holy life, then our lives should be characterized by the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

But what happens when we live differently? Suppose we allow our emotions to control us. When anger rises within us, we simply let our anger lead the way. We live according to our impulses and whatever feelings happen to arise in our hearts. What kind of person are we then? We are living much like someone who is drunk.

What kind of life should we live? We should live the holy, blameless, and faithful life that God desires for us. But if we allow feelings of sadness, anger, hatred, and resentment to arise within us and control our behavior, then we are just like a drunk person who has lost control of himself. A drunk person often behaves recklessly, without regard for his own judgment or intentions. In the same way, if our lives are not being guided by the Holy Spirit toward holiness and godliness, but instead we allow Satan to dominate our hearts and lead us according to our impulses, then even if we have never touched alcohol, we are living much like someone who is drunk.

So what kind of lives should we live? We should become people who discern God’s holy will and allow Him to guide our lives. Ephesians 5:19 goes on to describe the kind of life we should live:

“Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord.”

And verse 20 continues:

“Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

What kind of life should we live? We should remember God’s love, praise Him, and live with thankful hearts. That is what it means to make the most of our time. Why? Because a life filled with praise and thanksgiving to God is a truly blessed life. If we spend our lives becoming angry, pessimistic, complaining, and resentful, then our lives will inevitably become deeply tragic. We will have wasted the precious time God has given us.

Joseph was a man who lived a life of trust in God. One day, his own brothers suddenly turned against him. They wanted to kill him, and eventually they sold him as a slave to Egypt. What a shocking and devastating experience!

If something like that happened to us, how would we feel? What thoughts would go through our minds? Joseph had been his father’s beloved son, receiving special affection and care. But suddenly, he was taken away as a slave and forced to work in someone else’s household. Overnight, his entire position in life changed. He went from being a beloved son to a slave.

What kind of feelings would arise in our hearts in such a situation? Wouldn’t we feel discouraged? Wouldn’t we feel deep pain and sorrow?

But what is remarkable about Joseph is that he did not give up when he became a slave. He did not despair. He did not allow himself to be consumed by bitterness and sorrow. Instead, he trusted God. He must have thought, “Who is my God? He is my God, the One who knows me better than I know myself. He is the One who has brought me here.”

Joseph did not think that he had simply ended up there because of bad luck or some unfortunate accident. He trusted that God had brought him to that place for a reason. Of course, he could not understand God’s purpose at that moment. He could not see what God was doing. But at least he knew this: if God had brought him there, then his responsibility was not to spend his days weeping and suffering in despair. Instead, he needed to consider what God wanted him to do in that place and faithfully carry out the responsibility entrusted to him.

The time Joseph spent as a slave was not meaningless or wasted time. It was one stage in the process through which God was preparing him to become the ruler of Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. How was Joseph able to live in such a way? It was because he did not allow his heart to be consumed by discouragement, anger, and resentment. He did not waste his life in bitterness. Instead, he considered God’s will and continued to live faithfully, trusting God and remaining thankful even in those difficult circumstances. Because of that, his life was not a wasted life. He was making the most of the time God had given him.

There is a successful businessman today, although I do not know whether he is a Christian. His name is Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA. Have you heard of him? I’m glad you have!

Jensen Huang was born in Taiwan, lived in Thailand for a time, and immigrated to the United States when he was just nine years old. He experienced poverty during his early years in America. Today, he is the head of NVIDIA, one of the world’s leading technology companies, and has become an extraordinarily wealthy businessman whose company has a tremendous influence on the world.

I do not usually like to use living people as illustrations because everyone has shortcomings, problems, and various contradictions in their lives. It is not always easy to use someone who is still living as an example. Nevertheless, I once heard something he said that I found truly admirable.

After coming to America, Jensen Huang had to work while attending school because his family was poor. One of the jobs he had was washing dishes and cleaning tables at a restaurant called Denny’s. Denny’s is a family restaurant, a little more established than a fast-food restaurant like McDonald’s. I have eaten there several times myself.

Jensen Huang remembers working there, and do you know what he said about that experience? He said, “It was the best job of my life. That period was one of the most precious times in my life.”

When I heard him say that, I thought that although he may not be a believer, perhaps he had discovered something of God’s truth. He did not look back on those days as a time of misery. He did not say to himself, “This is so painful. Why do I have to work while everyone else gets to live comfortably?” Instead, he made the best of his circumstances. He worked hard, thinking about how he could wash dishes more efficiently and how he could clean and organize the tables more effectively. He gave his very best to the work entrusted to him.

As I listened to his story, I thought that even an unbeliever who discovers something of God’s principles can benefit greatly from putting them into practice. So where does the fundamental principle of making the most of our time begin? It begins with acknowledging God, praising Him, and living with thankful hearts.

Rather than spending our lives suffering in bitterness, complaining, resenting others, hating people, and shrinking back in despair, we should remember God’s wonderful providence. God knows us better than we know ourselves. He loves us more than anyone else. And when He brings us into a particular situation, there is a wonderful purpose behind it, even when we cannot understand it. When we recognize this, praise God, give thanks to Him, and do our very best in whatever circumstances we find ourselves, we are truly making the most of our time. We must remember this important truth.

The apostle Paul and Silas were once imprisoned in the city of Philippi while preaching the gospel. How wonderful it would be if everything always went well when we served God and preached His gospel! How wonderful it would be if countless people welcomed us and great crowds gathered to hear the message! But when the apostle Paul and Silas arrived in Philippi, things did not turn out that way. Instead of seeing the results they had hoped for, they encountered people who opposed them and even wanted to harm them.

Eventually, Paul and Silas were thrown into prison. But what kind of prison was it? It was nothing like the prisons we have today. What are modern prisons like? They have relatively good facilities. Recently, I heard that even some inmates serving life sentences at Wonju Prison had been transferred to other facilities because the prison was being renovated and upgraded with more modern accommodations.

But the prison where Paul and Silas were held was very different. It was a dark, miserable place deep underground. Rats might have been running around. It was damp, gloomy, and completely unsuitable for human comfort. Their feet were fastened in stocks, and they were chained so that they could hardly move. They were trapped in extremely harsh conditions.

Now, what did Paul and Silas do in that situation? Did they complain, asking why they had to suffer such treatment? Did they become discouraged and despair? No. What is truly remarkable is that they praised God even there. Do you remember that story? They sang praises to God right there in the prison!

And you know what happened as a result. The jailer who was responsible for guarding them, along with his entire household, came to believe in Jesus Christ. What an amazing miracle!

Dear brothers and sisters, do you want to spend your lives wasting the time God has given you? If we spend our days complaining and becoming pessimistic, saying things like, “Why was I born into this kind of family? Why do I have so little? Why has my life turned out this way?” then we are wasting the precious time God has entrusted to us.

But even when we cannot understand why God is leading our lives in a particular direction, we must remember who God is. He is a God of love. He is almighty. He never makes mistakes. We must believe that He has brought us into our present circumstances for a purpose, and that He is guiding every step of our lives. When we trust this truth and live with hearts full of thanksgiving and praise, we discover what a blessed life truly is. That is what it means to make the most of our time.

How did God Himself make the most of what was precious to Him? God loved and treasured His one and only Son. But He did not demonstrate that love by keeping His beloved Son safely in heaven, protecting Him from every hardship and never allowing Him to be used. Quite the opposite!

God gave His beloved Son for us. He gave Him up to be nailed to the cross. He allowed Him to shed His blood and surrender His very life for our sake. Through this, God accomplished the wonderful work of saving us. What an amazing grace He has shown us!

If we have received such wonderful grace from God, then our lives should never be wasted lives. Rather, at every moment, we should live with hearts full of thanksgiving and praise. When we wake up in the morning and encounter sadness, when we face painful circumstances, when good things happen to us, and even when unexpected or confusing situations arise, may we learn to give thanks and praise to God.

May all of us become people who make the most of the time God has given us, living every moment for His glory.

Amen.
