Obedience to God’s Word Is the Way to Life

1 Kings 20:35–36

We have just read 1 Kings 20:35–36. As we read this story, we may find ourselves somewhat perplexed. Did you have that feeling? I imagine you did. A certain prophet approached his friend and said, “Strike me!” But his friend refused to strike him. After all, how could he bring himself to hit his friend? It was something he simply could not do. But then, suddenly, the prophet pronounced judgment on him: “Because you did not strike me, you will soon be killed by a lion.” And what happened? It actually happened, just as the prophet had said. Let’s look again at verse 36: “He said to him, ‘Because you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, as soon as you leave me, a lion will kill you.’ And as soon as he had departed from him, a lion found him and killed him.” This is the story we have just read. When we read this account, we feel confused and uncomfortable. But what exactly makes us uncomfortable? What is so perplexing about it? The reason is that God seems somewhat like a dictator. He appears arbitrary, unreasonable, and perhaps even unpredictable—almost like someone who simply does whatever he wants, much like Trump across the Pacific. That is why this passage can make us feel so uncomfortable and bewildered.

However, if we take a moment to reflect carefully on this passage, I believe we can understand that God had this story recorded in Scripture to teach us a particular lesson. Why was this story recorded? Why did this incident take place? It was intended to teach us a lesson concerning what King Ahab had just done. At that time, King Ahab had disobeyed the word of God. He was supposed to defeat the king of Aram and carry out God’s judgment against that nation. That was the responsibility entrusted to him. We should understand that the wars described in the Old Testament were not simply power struggles between one nation and another. Rather, they can be understood as acts of divine judgment, as holy wars. God chose to use the nation of Israel as His instrument to bring judgment and punishment upon the nation of Aram.

But King Ahab went against God’s will and spared Ben-Hadad, the king of Aram. He made a treaty with him and accepted tribute from him, establishing a relationship in which Aram would remain under Israel’s influence and pay tribute to Israel. Ahab made this decision because he believed that allowing Ben-Hadad to live would be economically beneficial to his own nation. Perhaps, if this situation were happening today, that might actually be considered the better choice. Peace should take priority over war. Rather than fighting one another and bringing mutual destruction, it would seem wiser today to establish a peace treaty and coexist. However, at least in the context of that particular time, Ahab’s actions were a direct rejection of God’s will. His actions were similar to those of King Saul long ago, when he disobeyed God’s command to completely destroy the Amalekites and instead spared some of the animals. The story of the prophet and his friend was presented as a vivid visual lesson, demonstrating what happens when someone disobeys God’s command. It showed that such disobedience ultimately leads to destruction. Even after this explanation, those of us living in the twenty-first century may still find it difficult to understand.

The prophets in those days often communicated God’s messages through dramatic actions and symbolic performances. Sometimes they wore sackcloth, sometimes they broke things, sometimes they caused something to decay, and sometimes, like Hosea, they married a woman named Gomer. Through these symbolic actions, they made God’s message visible and tangible. In this particular case, the story was used to demonstrate how God would bring judgment upon King Ahab for refusing to listen to His word. Ultimately, the message of this story is that Ahab was heading toward destruction because he had disobeyed God’s command. So, although we may not fully understand every detail of this story, I believe there is one important lesson we can learn from it: It is a blessed path to obey God’s Word wholeheartedly, and disobeying God’s Word ultimately leads to destruction. I pray in the name of the Lord that we will remember this lesson.

What does it mean to fear God? It means wisdom. What is wisdom? Wisdom is knowing that God is someone to be taken seriously and feared. We need to understand that fire can be dangerous in order to use it safely and avoid being harmed by it. We need to understand the dangers of water so that we can avoid drowning. In the same way, our lives are safe when we learn to fear God. Therefore, through this story, we must remember that God’s Word is not something to be taken lightly. We must take His Word seriously, remember it deeply, and make a firm commitment to obey it. Where does the tragedy of human life begin? It begins when we disregard God’s Word. God told Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But they disobeyed that command. When Satan tempted them, he told them that they would not die if they ate the fruit. Instead, he promised that their eyes would be opened and that they would become like God. They were deceived, and they ate the fruit. And that became the beginning of humanity’s tragic journey toward destruction. We also read in the books of Samuel about a man named Uzzah, who touched the ark of God’s covenant in an irreverent manner and was struck down. These stories remind us that when we treat God’s Word with contempt, take it lightly, or handle holy things carelessly, we can bring destruction upon ourselves. Therefore, we must seriously consider what God’s will is and make a firm commitment of faith to obey Him.

Now, what is God’s will? We talked about it last week, and we have discussed it again today. What is God’s will? Have you forgotten already? What is God’s will? Give thanks! Give thanks! Do not simply grieve and weep over your circumstances. Give thanks. That is God’s will. Rejoice always. That is God’s will. Sometimes God’s will may seem completely unreasonable to us. We might think, “You want me to give thanks in this situation? You want me to rejoice under these circumstances? How could I possibly be thankful right now?” We may find it difficult to understand. Isn’t that similar to what happened in today’s story? When someone says, “Strike me!” who could understand why he would make such a request? We might think, “Why on earth should I strike him? Surely I shouldn’t hit him!” We may have the same reaction when God gives us certain commands in our lives. We may wonder why He is asking us to do such things. But who are those commands for? Whom do they benefit? They are for us! God is not giving us His commands for His own benefit. He is revealing His plans and purposes because He wants us to flourish, to be happy, and to live good and meaningful lives. Yet sometimes we cannot understand His commands with our own limited reasoning. They may even seem as unreasonable to us as the command to strike a friend in the face. But that does not mean we should ignore God’s Word and simply live according to our own feelings and emotions. What happens when we resist and disobey God’s commands? What are the consequences? We must understand this story as a serious warning: terrible things can happen in our lives, just as the man’s friend was attacked and killed by a lion. I believe this is the warning God is giving us through this passage.

We must learn to discern the will of God. Romans 12:2 says: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” What does this world continually tell us? It tells us things that are often the exact opposite of God’s will. We must not conform to this world. Instead, we must be transformed by the renewing of our minds—not simply continuing to live the way we have always lived, but allowing God to renew us continually. And what kind of will are we to discern? God’s good will—not His bad will. What kind of will? His pleasing will. And what kind of will? His perfect will. Let us say it in the right order: God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will. We must learn to discern what that will is and obey it according to His Word. That is the way of life. That is the way to avoid being attacked by the lion. I hope that through this shocking story, this truth will be firmly impressed upon our hearts once again. Ignoring God’s Word and simply going about our lives as though it does not matter is dangerous. It is like walking away only to be attacked and killed by a lion. We must remember that.

But please do not misunderstand what I am saying. I am not saying that we must blindly obey everything a prophet says, or that we must unconditionally submit to whatever a religious leader tells us. In ancient times, before the Bible had been completed, God communicated various messages through prophets. At that time, the fullness of God’s revelation had not yet been recorded in Scripture as we have it today. But now, God’s Word has been fully revealed and given to us in the Bible. Therefore, we are to read Scripture, meditate on it, carefully consider it, and discern God’s will through His Word. It would be wrong for us to live our Christian lives blindly following someone who appears today and says, “God told me this, so you must do it,” as though we were living in the days of the Old Testament prophets. Do you understand what I mean? There are people in our church who sometimes say, “To obey is better than sacrifice.” They emphasize the importance of obeying God’s Word, and then they say, “If the pastor said it, I will obey without question.” When I hear that, part of me feels grateful. After all, it expresses trust and confidence in the pastor. I appreciate that. But at the same time, it can be a very dangerous statement. Why? Because pastors today are not the same as the prophets of ancient times who directly received divine revelation and delivered it to God’s people. Where do we discover God’s will today? We discover it by reading God’s Word, meditating on it, and carefully wrestling with its meaning.

Suppose there is a pastor who claims that God has personally spoken to him and told him, “This is what you must do.” Should we simply follow such a person? Should we or shouldn’t we? We must not follow such claims indiscriminately. Why? Because someone who makes such claims may be promoting heretical teachings. If someone within our denomination makes such claims, our denomination may judge that person’s teaching to be heretical. Some people may say things like this: “While I was praying, I heard the voice of God. God told me that we must build a church building.” Or they may say, “God spoke directly to me and told me to do this,” or “God told me to do that.” When we hear such statements, should we simply respond, “Oh, I see. God really told you that,” and then follow along? In today’s passage, the prophet told his friend, “Strike me, because God has spoken to you.” The friend was expected to strike him because of the word of the LORD. Does that mean that when a pastor today says, “God has spoken to me,” we must automatically obey whatever that pastor says? I need you to answer this question. Should we follow such instructions or not? No. Absolutely not. That person may not actually be communicating God’s will. Rather, what might that person be doing? He may be taking the name of God in vain. A pastor may claim that God has spoken to him when God has not actually said anything to him. He may deceive the congregation by presenting his own words as though they were God’s words. He may make evil intentions appear to be good and righteous purposes. If someone does this knowingly and deliberately, that person is not a pastor whom we should blindly follow. Rather, that person is seriously violating the third commandment, which tells us not to misuse the name of the LORD our God. We must not follow such a person.

Of course, a pastor may deliberately lie. But it is also possible that someone sincerely believes he has received a message through a dream, prayer, or some other experience. Even then, that experience may not have been interpreted correctly. The person may have misunderstood it or failed to discern God’s Word properly. Therefore, when we encounter a pastor who makes such claims, we must not reason this way: “Well, in 1 Kings 20, the man died because he did not obey God’s Word. So if our pastor tells us something, we must obey him no matter what.” That is not the lesson of this passage. We must always examine everything in the light of God’s Word. The fullness of God’s will has been clearly revealed in the sixty-six books of the Bible. Therefore, we must carefully discern whether what someone says is consistent with Scripture. We must also consider whether that person might be speaking out of evil intentions, mistaken judgment, or some other misunderstanding. We need to be careful so that we are not led astray or deceived into following the wrong path. Several years ago, there was a very popular pastor who claimed that God revealed certain things to him while he was praying. He would tell people things like, “You should move to this particular area,” or “You should try doing this.” He then collected testimonies from people who had followed his advice. Some had changed jobs, moved to different places, or made various decisions, and afterward they claimed to have become successful. He gathered these stories into a book, and the book became a bestseller. But this kind of approach to faith is misguided. We must be careful not to be deceived by such things. We must not misunderstand today’s passage and conclude that whenever someone claims to speak in God’s name, we must unconditionally obey that person’s words. What, then, is the standard by which we make our judgments? It is God’s Word. Our standard is Scripture. We must discern God’s Word, trust it, and live according to it. I pray that we will make this kind of firm commitment of faith in our lives. In particular, there is another important lesson we should learn from today’s passage. We must not insist on our own opinions and stubbornly cling to our own preferences. When God’s will is clear—when His will has been plainly revealed in Scripture—we must obey it, even when our emotions do not cooperate and even when our hearts do not feel like following it. That is the blessed way of obedience to God’s Word. God’s will has been clearly revealed to us: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Since God’s will has been so clearly revealed, we must obey it wholeheartedly. Instead of hating others, envying them, and being jealous of them, we should love them, forgive them, and treat them with kindness according to God’s will. We must recognize that this is what God desires for our lives and obey His Word wholeheartedly. We must remember clearly that this is the way of life—the way to avoid being attacked by the lion. At this very moment, I pray that we will make this commitment in our hearts: “If it is God’s grace, if it is God’s Word, I will obey.” Even when we feel uncomfortable, even when our hearts do not want to follow, if it is truly God’s will, we must believe that obedience is the way of life. And what did our Lord Jesus do? Our Lord Jesus obeyed God’s will when He was called to bear the cross. He followed the Father’s will, even though it meant that He would have to die. He prayed: “Not my will, but yours be done.” When Jesus submitted Himself to the cross for our sake, that path was not a path of destruction. It was the path that led to resurrection and new life. It became the blessed path through which the whole human race could be saved. Let us remember this truth. And I pray, in the name of our Lord, that each of us will make a firm commitment to live lives of faithful obedience to God. Amen.
