The God Who Answers by Fire: Why the Object of Our Prayer Matters

In our last session, we looked at how the prophets of Baal cried out passionately to their god, even harming their own bodies, yet received no response from heaven. They prayed passionately, but Baal had no power to answer. Because it was an idol, it could not give any response whatsoever. When the prophets of Baal failed, it became Elijah’s turn, and we are looking today at the story of how Elijah prayed to God, causing fire to fall from heaven. First, Elijah built an altar, dug a trench around it, placed the sacrifice on the altar, and instructed them to pour water on it. He didn’t just have them pour it once; how many times did they pour it? Have you not read your Bibles? They poured it three times. Because they poured it three times, the trench was filled with water, the sacrifice was soaked, and the entire structure became drenched in water. Since it hadn’t rained, where did they get the water? Where on earth did that water come from? I do not know. When I went on a pilgrimage recently, I only received an explanation up to “That over there is Mount Carmel.” If I had gone onto Mount Carmel and explored, I would have wanted to see where they obtained the water, but I came back without having that opportunity. I simply followed wherever the guide led us in a rush, so now I don’t even remember where all we went, but at any rate, they obtained water from somewhere and poured it. Perhaps, given the terrain of Israel—where there are mountains and rain falls on one side, traveling underground beneath the mountain and springing up on the other side due to pressure, or rain falling on one side springing up as water on the exact opposite side—there was a spring nearby, or something similar. Although the Bible does not explain it in detail, they obtained water from somewhere and poured it, completely soaking the altar itself.

Why did the prophet Elijah tell them to pour water before praying? What was the reason for pouring water like that? It was to create conditions under which the sacrifice on the altar would not burn easily, even if fire were to descend from heaven. It needs to be dry and crisp for fire to catch well. When do forest fires happen easily? Just as forest fires break out when things are dry and arid, if the altar were dry, there might be even a slight possibility of fire breaking out by some method—whether a brush fire or something else. But he completely eliminated even that possibility. What was the reason for eliminating any such possibility—the possibility of the altar catching fire by a forest fire? It was to leave them without a single word to say in objection.

“Didn’t this catch fire by chance rather than being sent by God? Didn’t it catch fire because of a brush fire?” Human beings have a wicked heart that constantly tries not to acknowledge God even when witnessing His miracles. To completely subdue such wicked hearts, and to create a situation where, no matter how much they try to deny or refuse to accept it, they have no choice but to acknowledge it, he poured water on the altar and on the sacrifice, making it impossible to burn the sacrifice by any natural means. Only by creating such a situation—so that when fire fell and consumed the sacrifice on the altar, everyone would clearly realize, “This truly was God’s answer! The LORD God is alive! God’s work is indisputable!”—did he completely eliminate all other possibilities beforehand. When we look at the Bible, we often see instances where things were done in this manner.

Looking at the 300 warriors of Gideon, when they were going out to fight against the Midianite army, God said to Gideon: “The people with you are too many. The people are too many. Reduce the number of soldiers.” So he sent back everyone who was fearful and afraid, yet looking at the number that remained, God said, “The people are still too many. The people are still too many.” So in the end, how many remained? Only 300 remained. What kind of number is that number 300? Did 300 elite, formidable warriors remain? No. What does that number 300 represent? It is a number so small that it instills a sense of despair: “What can we do with so few? What kind of victory can we achieve with this amount? We are ruined. We can do nothing.”

Looking at the Midianite soldiers, a tremendous multitude was encamped, and that powerful, vast army was right before them, while what were they? “A mere 300 men—what are we supposed to do with this? What kind of work can we accomplish with this?” God intentionally created a situation that forced them to feel such despair, so that after the battle, the people of Israel would not become proud in their hearts and say, “I won! We did it by our own strength! Our power accomplished it! Our strategy worked well!” To make them confess that this was entirely the grace of God, God kept reducing their numbers. Although God did not reduce them in this next instance, there was a case where the opposing side reduced their own odds. When was that? It was the Philistines. When the Philistines brought the ark of the covenant into their town and placed it inside their temple, terrible things kept happening inside that temple.

Seeing the god Dagon fallen face down before the ark of the LORD with its head and hands broken off, and seeing various tumors and disasters striking their town, they thought, “Ah, where did this disaster come from? Did it come from God? If so, let us send this ark back to Israel.” As they sent it back, what method did the Philistines choose for returning it? They loaded the ark on a cart pulled by cows, but what kind of cows were they? They used cows that had recently calved and were nursing to pull the cart. And behind the cart, the calves were crying out: “Mom, where are you going? Mom!” How do calves cry out? Hearing that sound, could a normal mother cow keep walking straight ahead? She cannot. A normal cow would inevitably turn back toward her calf as she walked. That is motherly love.

Confident that the cows would 100% return to their calves, thinking, “This is not a judgment brought by God. God does not exist; our god Dagon is superior,” they intentionally used nursing cows to pull the cart in order to deny God again, and again, and again. But surprisingly, what happened? Those cows headed straight toward Beth-shemesh without turning to the right or to the left. Seeing that, the Philistines had no choice but to acknowledge: “The God of Israel is indeed the true God, the true God!” The reason Elijah built the altar and poured water on it today was to make everyone present realize that God is the true God.

Instead of using cheap tricks like magicians who pretend to perform magic while secretly lighting a fire to ignite the altar, he created a worst-case scenario where no fire could possibly start, no matter what trick was used. Then he prayed to God, and what happened? Wonderfully, God answered. The fact that water had been poured was no obstacle at all. In 1 Kings 18:38, it says: “Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.” Looking at that immense, miraculous work that completely burned everything up, a wondrous work of grace occurred where all the spectators present had no choice but to acknowledge that the LORD God is the true God. Seeing that, the people of Israel came to know clearly. In 1 Kings 18:39, it says: “And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces.” They could not help but fall on their faces.

They confessed, “The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God.” Here, why did they say “The LORD, he is God” not just once, but twice? It is for emphasis. In Hebrew, saying something twice is for emphasis—emphasis! “He is the real God, the true God! He is the God whom we absolutely must acknowledge!” At that moment, everyone acknowledged it, and a wondrous work took place as they realized that God is the true God. Furthermore, when the prophets of Baal saw it, they too could not help but realize that Baal was a fake and God was the true God. They had no choice but to flee, but the people prevented them from escaping and executed them, resulting in a glorious victory. Here, we must ask a question: why did God send down fire? How was Elijah’s prayer able to receive an answer? What was the reason?

While the prophets of Baal received no response no matter how loudly they cried out, where does the decisive difference lie that caused God to answer Elijah’s prayer and send down fire? That decisive difference does not depend on how loud the voice is. Did Elijah cry out at the top of his voice like the prophets of Baal? Did he cry out while harming his own body like the prophets of Baal? Did God answer because he prayed with such intense passion? That is not so. How did Elijah act? Rather than praying with all that fanatic passion like the prophets of Baal, he simply presented his petition before God. Looking at 1 Kings 18:36–37: “And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, ‘O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.'” Did he shout loudly? How do you think he prayed before God? It seems he simply prayed calmly before God.

Yet the wondrous thing is that God answered Elijah’s prayer. Why was Elijah’s prayer answered while the prayer of the prophets of Baal was not? It is because the answer to prayer does not depend on me, but on God who receives the prayer. The answer to prayer does not depend on me. It does not depend on how passionately I cry out, how much devotion I put into it, how loudly I shout, how thoroughly I pray, or what status or qualifications I possess. The core of answered prayer lies in who the One listening to my prayer is. If you stand before an idol, there will be no answer no matter how passionately you pray; but if you stand before the true God, the God of love will respond to our prayers with His warm hand of love. Among the books written by Professor Richard Pratt, there is a book titled Praying with Eyes Opened.

It is a book about how to pray—telling us to pray with our eyes open. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? What this book means is not that we shouldn’t close our physical eyes when we pray, but that we must open our spiritual eyes to see who the God we are praying to really is. It is a book emphasizing that we must know who the God listening to our prayers is, perceive Him correctly, and pray before the true God. The more we know God, the deeper our prayers can become. We must pray knowing what kind of God He is. How can we come to know God?

By reading and meditating on God’s Word, learning what God says about Himself in Scripture, and understanding what kind of God He is… Therefore, prayer is not just about praying a lot; to pray, we must know God more, meditate more, and pray while having a firm understanding of who God is. Why was the prayer of the prophets of Baal wrong? Because they prayed in a state of not knowing God properly. No matter how passionate they were, it was wrong because they did not approach the true God, but approached an idol without knowing God. Likewise, our prayers must also be offered with a proper knowledge of God. We often misunderstand God.

Although we say we know God, instead of understanding the concept of God presented in Scripture—who God truly is—how often do we approach God under misunderstandings spoken by flawed people? We are particularly prone to falling for false misunderstandings about God. This is because there are always people around us speaking maliciously about God. Who was the one who spoke most maliciously? It was Satan. He went to Eve and lied about God.

“Do you know who God is? God is not a God who loves you; He is jealous that if you eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, your eyes will be opened and you will become like Him. That is why He doesn’t love you, but restricts you from moving toward better things, forbidding you from eating it”—sowing misunderstandings and spreading false rumors about God. How often do we get deceived by those words and, instead of approaching God in the way He desires, make choices He dislikes and fall into sin? That is why the effort to read, meditate on, and properly learn God’s Word is immensely important. To pray, we need to desire, read, and meditate on God’s Word even more.

However, if we pray while misunderstanding God without knowing Him properly, we may bow down to what is not God, and when we pray to God in a wrong manner, our prayers risk becoming futile. It is the same regarding the understanding of God: why did the people of Israel go after Baal? Because people lied about God. “What kind of God is He? He is a God who has no interest in you. He is a God who does not answer even if you pray. God is finished now. He might have helped you in the past, but He has no interest now. He might have been God in the wilderness, but in this land of Canaan, He is a God with no power.”

They deceived people with such misunderstandings and wrongly taught them, “In this land of Canaan, Baal is the god who is beneficial to you.” As a result, many people, like the prodigal son leaving his father’s house, had no choice but to walk down wrong paths. Today, we must rediscover who God is once again. Who is God? He is the God who loves us, leading us along the best and most righteous path. Though the things we encounter right now may sometimes be difficult and painful, we must approach God with the assurance that the Lord, who loved us enough to give His beloved Son on the cross, leads us along the best and most righteous path. Hebrews 11:6 says: “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

God loves us. He desires to bestow His grace upon us. “Would God even listen to the prayer of someone like me? Would He even acknowledge someone like me?” Do not hesitate like that, but let us go before the Lord who welcomes us, experience the wondrous grace He bestows, and enjoy God’s marvelous blessings. I pray this for all of us in the name of the Lord.
