Imitating God: Walking in His Love

In today’s scripture from Ephesians chapter 5, we are given this exhortation. Looking at Ephesians 5:1, it says: “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.” Who are we called to imitate? God. We shouldn’t imitate Satan, should we?

As this Word speaks to us, calling us to “imitate God,” there are two underlying premises we can think about.

First, the fact that we have not yet fully come to resemble God. Not a single one of us has completely embodied the image of God the way He is. Is there anyone here who would say, “I am just like God”? Is there anyone around us we could point to and say, “That person is the spitting image of God”? Unfortunately, our problem is that none of us reflect God completely. Sometimes, the image of Satan is revealed in us instead—when we throw our weight around and bully the powerless, or when we harbor hatred, bitterness, and anger rather than speaking words of love and consideration.

Even though these behaviors surface in us frequently, living this way is certainly not okay. Therefore, I believe we must make a relentless effort to imitate God, to resemble His character and His likeness.

There is a second premise, however: despite all this, we can become like God. It is not impossible, because we are children of God. If we were not His children, it would make no sense to tell us to imitate Him. Could you tell a stone to be like God? Impossible. Could you look at a dog or a pig and say, “You need to imitate God”? That is impossible. But the reason the Bible tells us, “Imitate God,” is precisely because we are His children. Let’s turn to the person next to us and say, “You are a child of God.”

Children naturally take after their parents. If you leave a child in the care of their grandmother, they end up taking after their grandmother. Just as children inevitably resemble their parents because they are family, the reason God tells us to imitate Him is because we are His children, and therefore, we have the capacity to do so.

If that is the case, how can we imitate God? How can we grow to be like Him?

First of all, there must be a deep yearning in our hearts to be like God. We must have a sincere desire to imitate Him. If we have been drifting through life without any such desire or longing, my prayer in the name of the Lord is that as you hear His Word today, a passionate longing to resemble the Lord will be ignited in your heart.

There is a very famous short story that many of you probably know—The Great Stone Face [by Nathaniel Hawthorne]. Do you all know it? I assume most of you finished elementary school. In the story, the main character, Ernest, grew up constantly hearing a story from his mother: “Someday, a man will appear who looks just like the Great Stone Face. He will be truly great and wise, and he will lead us on the right path.”

So young Ernest would constantly look up at the Great Stone Face on the mountain—the one in New Hampshire, though I hear part of it collapsed a few years ago and you can’t see it quite the same way anymore—and he waited with great longing, hoping that a great leader and wise man bearing that likeness would finally appear in their village.

One day, a merchant named Mr. Gathergold appeared. He was a man who had amassed a huge fortune, and people flocked around him, shouting, “This man must be the Great Stone Face!” But in reality, no such noble likeness was found in him.

Later, a famous general who had won great renown, Old Blood-and-Thunder, appeared. People crowded around, declaring, “This is surely the Great Stone Face!” But still, neither true wisdom nor genuine greatness could be found in him. A politician known for his eloquent tongue and fame also appeared, but he too brought nothing but disappointment. He waited and waited, but the one he longed for did not come.

When Ernest had grown into an old man, a poet finally came to him and said, “Looking at you, I see that you have grown to resemble the Great Stone Face.” The years he had spent gazing upon that face and longing for it were what quietly molded the boy into the very likeness of the Great Stone Face.

There are many lessons we can draw from this story, but how do we become like someone? We become like them when we long for it. Instead of living our lives with zero ambition or spiritual desire, may a deep longing to imitate God fill the hearts of our brothers and sisters—may it fill all of our hearts, in the name of the Lord. We need to harbor this deep desire in our souls: a prayer and a longing for the character of Jesus to become our very character.

How can we cultivate such a heart? How do such longings take root? First, we must wake up to the fact of our own wretched condition. If we need change but it never happens, it is usually because we fail to see ourselves clearly. If someone needs to lose weight but refuses to face their actual physical reality, pretending everything is fine, no change will ever take place. But when we look at ourselves and feel the gravity of our situation, that is when we finally begin to feel a genuine desire to change, and true transformation becomes possible.

When I was living in the United States some years ago, I tried going on a diet. Dieting is terribly difficult for me because I love to eat. But there was a specific turning point: I went to the doctor for a routine checkup, and the blood test results showed that my cholesterol and liver enzyme levels were dangerously high. The doctor warned, “If you aren’t careful, this could be fatal.” When I thought of my wife and my children, I realized, “I cannot let this happen.” So I made up my mind to watch what I eat. When I tried to lower my cholesterol, I felt like there was nothing left to eat! Dieting and cutting down on rice was agonizing. But I made a firm resolution: at every single meal, whenever a bowl of rice was served, I would scoop out one-third and eat only the remaining two-thirds. I kept this up for years. And you know what? My health improved dramatically. Once I saw how much better I felt, I went right back to my old habits. (Laughter) But the point is, once you realize the severity of your condition, that is when the desire for change is born.

The prodigal son experienced precisely this. When he first left his father’s house, everything seemed fine. But eventually, he came face-to-face with his harsh reality: he realized just how wretched his condition truly was. When he came to his senses and realized, “Even the hired servants in my father’s house have food to spare, and here I am starving to death,” that realization sparked a desperate yearning in his heart: “I want to return to my father’s house.”

Therefore, today, you and I must examine our own spiritual condition. We need to realize, “Things are not okay. If I keep living like this, I am spiritually dying; if I keep going down this road, I will ruin my life.” By honestly facing our spiritual reflection, may the Lord grant us a burning zeal during this coming week to diagnose our own hearts and passionately yearn to become more like Him.

If change rarely happens in our lives today, it is often because our priorities keep getting hijacked by lesser things. In The Screwtape Letters, a famous book by the British author C.S. Lewis, the very first chapter opens with a striking scene. A man goes to a library and begins reading a book on faith. As he reads, he starts deeply pondering his spiritual condition and his relationship with God. How does Satan try to disrupt him? How does he manage to divert the man’s attention away? Satan doesn’t start a fierce theological debate by whispering, “The contents of that book are completely false and a lie.” Instead, Satan drops a very simple thought into his mind: “Hey, aren’t you hungry right now? It’s lunchtime.”

As soon as that thought pops up, the man stops thinking about his deep spiritual struggles, closes the book, and says, “Let’s grab some lunch first.” The moment he steps outside to get food, his eyes catch other distractions: a vendor shouting, “Newspapers out!”, a passing bus that makes him think, I’ll need to catch that bus to get home. Through this ordinary flow of daily life, the earnest heart he had just a moment ago while sitting in the library reading a spiritual book completely fades away.

Perhaps our own lives look very much like this. When we come before the Lord on Sunday to worship and examine our hearts, only to get immediately swallowed up by the rush of our daily routines and familiar habits, our focus on God drifts away, and the longing to resemble Him slowly withers. If you’ve experienced that, recognize that it is not okay. We need to check in with ourselves every single moment—”Am I truly living a life that imitates God?”—and make resolute choices to cultivate our longing for Him and transform our lives.

Those who drew near to Jesus found life. Even the tax collectors, who were considered the most wicked people of that era, found life the moment they came before the Lord. The instant Zacchaeus reached out just to catch a glimpse of Jesus, he received salvation.

On the other hand, the Pharisees—who thought they were doing just fine with their religious routine—did nothing. They were completely blind to their own spiritual gravity. Thinking to themselves, “I’m doing alright. I’m certainly better than that tax collector. I’m much more righteous than those common folk,” those Pharisees walked right past Jesus, gaining no spiritual benefit whatsoever, and ultimately crumbled. We must remember this sobering truth.

What, then, does it mean to imitate God? Does it mean mimicking His physical appearance or His face? God is spirit; He has no face. Therefore, imitating God means imitating His character. If we were to summarize the character of God into a single word, what would it be? Love.

Ephesians 5:2 expresses it this way: “And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

Because God is love, we must imitate that unchanging love of God. What kind of love is God’s love? In truth, we are people who do not deserve to receive God’s love. We did not live according to God’s will; instead, we betrayed God and lived by serving things other than God as idols, so it can be said that we committed spiritual adultery. We could say that we fell into spiritual uncleanness. Therefore, even if God were to destroy our relationship with Him and declare, “It is over now,” announcing a broken engagement, we would have had nothing to say in response—that was precisely what our state was like.

However, the amazing thing is that God did not abandon us. He did not simply cast aside those of us who committed sins and made mistakes; rather, He called us back and welcomed us as His bride. The story that illustrates this is the Book of Hosea in the Old Testament. One day, God speaks truly astonishing words. He tells the prophet Hosea, “Go, take for yourself an adulterous wife, Gomer.” So, when Hosea took that woman as his wife according to God’s word, she immediately left and became a prostitute. She ran off right away and was playing around with another man. It breaks your heart. You would think the relationship could just be broken off, but God’s command was: “Go again and buy her back with money; buy her back with money and welcome her as your wife once more.” This holds a symbolic meaning, and it is precisely what God has done for us.

What God did was this: when we forsook God, partnered with idols, and fell into spiritual uncleanness, God did not simply abandon us and end it. Instead, He gave up Jesus to the cross, had Him shed His blood, washed us clean at that price, and welcomed us back as His bride—this is the unchanging, amazing love of God. And the text tells us that we must imitate this very love of God. As we live through this coming week, we must examine whether our thoughts and actions truly resemble God’s love and whether we are walking in God’s love. Are the words I speak, the actions I take, words that resemble God’s love? Are they actions that resemble God’s love? Or are they actions that resemble the likeness of Satan? Are they words that resemble the speech of Satan? Examining these things, I believe we must all become those who walk in God’s love—in the love within Christ—in our lives today.

What should the lifestyle of one who has received God’s love look like? Ephesians 5:3–4 expresses it like this: “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.  Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”

I don’t think I need to go into detail about verses 3 and 4.

What kind of words should those who love God speak? We must remember that walking in love means not speaking words of resentment, complaint, mockery, or slander, but rather speaking words of thanksgiving and showing love in our lives.

There is a pastor named Dr. David Gibbs of Lancaster Baptist Church in California, USA. He once shared a story from his own experience.

One day, while staying at a hotel, he woke up in the middle of the night and turned on the faucet, but no water came out at all.

At 3:30 AM, he called the front desk and asked, “Hello? There is no water coming out in my room.”

The front desk staff replied, “Yes, I know.”

Surprised, Pastor Gibbs asked, “You know? And you still gave me this room?”

The employee explained, “Actually, that was the only room in our hotel without water. It wasn’t originally intended for guests. Another guest checked into it first, but he complained so much and got so angry that we moved him to another room and put you in this one instead.”

Furious, Pastor Gibbs lost his temper and said, “What kind of excuse is that? Are you out of your mind?”

He continued, “How is such a thing even possible? You should be ashamed of being born!”

Then there was silence on the other end of the line. They didn’t hang up; the employee simply had nothing to say. After a brief pause, the front desk clerk spoke quietly:

“Pastor, if I may say something… I actually attend a nearby Bible college. And you come to preach at our school once every year.”

Deeply embarrassed, Pastor Gibbs tried to smooth things over, saying, “Oh, really? You know I was just joking, right? I didn’t mean what I said earlier.” But the employee continued:

“Honestly, I don’t have much money. But because your ministry is so precious to me, I donate a little bit of my income to support it every month. Pastor, I love you.”

Pastor Gibbs felt deeply ashamed. He went downstairs, knelt before the employee, and asked for forgiveness:

“I was wrong. I broke God’s heart. I spoke words to you that I would never want my wife or children to hear from anyone else.”

The employee replied, “No, it was our fault.”

Pastor Gibbs said, “No. God told us to give thanks in all circumstances, but I broke His heart.”

A year after that incident, Pastor Gibbs visited a church. While conversing with the pastor of that church, the local pastor mentioned:

“Pastor Gibbs, there is a female member in our church who attends a nearby Bible college. She mentioned that you once stayed at the hotel where she works.”

Surprised, Pastor Gibbs feigned ignorance and asked, “Did she happen to say anything about me?”

The pastor replied, “She said she likes you very much.”

So Pastor Gibbs shared everything that had happened that night: “Pastor, that day, I said those terrible words to her.”

Then the local pastor said, “Pastor, do you know her background? She is an orphan. As soon as she was born, she was thrown into a trash can and was on the brink of death when someone found her and saved her life. She grew up as an orphan, not knowing who her father or mother was. Saying to her, ‘You should be ashamed of being born’ must have pierced her heart like a nail driven into her soul. Yet, she never complained even once.”

How was that employee able to refrain from complaining and even express gratitude in such a situation? It was likely because she sought to imitate God.

Instead of giving in to the voice of Satan—which tempts us to react according to our bad mood, anger, or irritation, whispering, “If you don’t vent, people will look down on you, and you must get angry to demand your rights”—she chose a heart that strives to follow God.

Satan constantly prompts us to look at people’s flaws, urging us to focus on shortcomings, notice negative things, complain, and harbor resentment. He incites our hearts to criticize and abuse even those we ought to love the most.

God, however, tells us to look at strengths, search for reasons to be grateful, and discover reasons to be thankful.

In fact, the reason we received salvation is that God did not look only at our flaws.

If God had viewed us as we were in our natural state, we were filthy lives with no defense even if condemned to eternal judgment.

Yet God did not fixate on our sins. He removed our transgressions as far as the east is from the west, declared that He would remember them no more, and viewed us as His beloved children.

Because He saved us even to the point of nailing Jesus Christ to the cross to make us alive, we have been made children of God who can live as His children today.

If there is a prayer topic for us today, it should be: “Lord, I want to resemble You. I want the character of Jesus to become my own personality. I desire to walk in love. Instead of complaining, resenting, and showing irritation, help me find reasons to give thanks and praise God. Transform our lives.”

May we all walk in faith and triumph throughout this coming week.
