The Theology of Idols vs. The Love of Our Father
Today, we are looking at the confrontation scene between the prophet Elijah and the prophets of Baal. We are looking at a portion of the story where a test was proposed to see which god would answer—Baal or the LORD God—by placing sacrifices on the altar.
First, the prophets of Baal began to cry out before the god Baal. From morning until noon, how many hours passed? Three hours? Six hours? Anyway, quite a lot of time passed. During all that time, the prophets of Baal prayed according to their religious rituals and the way they cried out to Baal, asking him to send fire. Did the fire fall? Or did it not fall? It did not fall. To be exact, it could not fall. Why? Because Baal is not a god. Baal is merely the handiwork of human beings.
No matter how majestic he looks and no matter how awe-inspiringly he is crafted, Baal is not the true God but merely an idol, and idols cannot answer people’s prayers. What is an idol? As recorded in Psalm 115:4-7, “Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat.” Because Baal was made by humans, he cannot give any response.
However, the prophets of Baal did not give up. This time, they hopped around the altar and danced. They performed their religious rituals. But still, there was no response. Then the prophet Elijah mocked and taunted them. That story is recorded in 1 Kings 18:27: “And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, ‘Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.'” It’s quite a taunt, isn’t it? He is mocking them: “Why isn’t your god answering? Isn’t he deep in meditation, so wake him up? Perhaps he has stepped out for a moment, so call out to him. Perhaps he is sleeping, so wake him up. Maybe he is busy with something else and hasn’t heard this sound yet, so cry out louder.”
If that were the case, he would have to be a fake god. A god who goes out and cannot hear prayers, a god who falls asleep and cannot hear prayer, a god who is meditating and cannot hear prayer—that means he is fake. A fake. What kind of God is the true God? Psalm 121:3-4 says, “He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
Unlike foolish humans who might fall asleep and fail to protect, not knowing when a fire breaks out. We human beings cannot protect our children for even a split second when we look away. As much as we parents love them, we are not perfect, so we cannot watch over our children all the time. In the brief moment we look away, children can get lost, or face terrible dangers and hardships. But what kind of God is the God we believe in? He neither slumbers nor sleep. There is never a single moment when God does not look upon us, never a single moment when He turns away from us—He is the God who always protects us. That is the God we believe in.
Yet Baal gave no answer. Why was there no answer? Because he is a fake god. When there was no answer, how did the prophets of Baal react? Looking at 1 Kings 18:28-29 today: “And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.”
They cried out passionately. They shouted loudly. And they even drew blood. “Will you still not listen to my prayer?” As they inflicted wounds on their bodies and shed blood, pleading desperately for an answer, Baal could not answer. Because Baal is not a god.
Looking at this passage today, we can think about the “theology of idols.” What is the theology of idols? The theology of idols is the belief that in order to receive an answer from a god, we must do our absolute best so that we can somehow earn an answer from him. Whispering won’t do. Only when you shout loudly will he barely answer. When we bring a sacrifice, if we offer a shabby one, the idol won’t answer. You have to offer a tremendous sacrifice for the idol to barely pay attention. When we worship, if we just worship quietly, the idol won’t answer. How must we worship? The theology of idols says that only when we offer our sacrifice—even harming our bodies and shedding our blood—might the idol answer us then.
What the theology of idols assumes is this: Where does a god’s answer depend? It depends entirely on “what we do.” How great is our passion? How much louder do we shout? How many more sacrifices do we bring, and how much greater a sacrifice do we pay? Only according to that great sacrifice can the god answer us. That is the core of the theology of idols.
However, no matter how much you do that, will an answer come? It will not come. Because Baal is merely an idol. But when people cry out and get no answer, they think, “Perhaps we haven’t moved our god enough yet. To move him more, what else can we do?” and they end up driving themselves to even more painful extremes. Perhaps this is the very core of the theology of idols.
In a society dominated by superstition, the harm caused by such things is immeasurable. Although such practices have largely disappeared nowadays, in the past, to satisfy idols and gods, people thought they had to throw a virgin into the In-dang-su waters to die so that the god would give them peace. Every time they set sail, they paid a heavy price, buying a virgin and casting her life into the water so that the Dragon King would not rage against them—that is the spirit of idol worship.
In old India, missionaries witnessing the miserable realities happening there wrote in reports about how a mother would throw her own child into the Ganges River to die—a mother killing her own child. When approached and asked why she was doing such a thing, she replied, “The god said that to save my eldest son, I must kill my second son, so I have no choice but to kill him.” These idol-based theological systems drive countless people into suffering. The theology of the prophets of Baal was just like that: crying out to Baal, and when there was no answer, shouting louder, dancing around the altar, and when still unanswered, harming their own bodies, trying to figure out how to move the idol’s heart through self-sacrifice to bring down fire. But does an answer come? It does not.
Then what kind of God is He? The God we believe in, the God spoken of in the Bible—what kind of God is He? First, the God we believe in is the living God. Do you believe this? Second, what kind of God is the God we believe in? He is a God of abundant love.
Therefore, we do not approach God with the theology of idols; rather, we must approach the living and loving God with a biblical perspective. A theology that serves idols can never work before God. It is not that if we put in all our sincerity, passion, and immense sacrifices, God will finally be moved by it and give us a meager answer. Our God is completely different!
Jesus gave us astonishing words. Teaching about prayer in Matthew 6:7-8, Jesus said this: “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”
Jesus told us not to heap up empty phrases. Do you know what heap up empty phrases (babbling repetitively) means? If that phrase is hard to understand, you just need to look at what is written in the very next line. What is written in the next line? “For they think that they will be heard for their many words.”
The mindset of the Gentiles and idol worshippers is this: if we cry out loudly, if we pray a lot, if we pray for a thousand days or a hundred days… yes, if we pray a lot, then God will answer; if we pray just a little, God won’t listen. Thinking this way, they pray excessively. They pray loudly. They wander around, dancing, even harming their own bodies to pray.
However, Jesus teaches us about prayer and says: “Do not think like the Gentiles. Do not think of God like an idol.” Why? Because God is not only living, but He is also a God who loves us.
How should we act? We don’t need to harm our bodies like the prophets of Baal did. How should we pray? We should pray just like we speak to our mothers. We should pray just like we speak to our fathers. “Mom, I need this.” “Dad, I need this.” We don’t need to throw tantrums, cry out, fast, and shed blood for Him to finally listen. Just like a mother who, even before you finish speaking, upon hearing you call out “Mom!” as you return from school, says, “You must be hungry,” and brings out a snack—God is a God who not only knows our needs but also desires to give us the very best things. May you believe this in the name of the Lord.
Why are we continually drawn to the theology of idols? The reason we are drawn to the theology of idols, even while claiming to believe in God, is because we think those methods work. It fits our human nature. The transactional mindset: “If I work hard, if I accomplish something, then as a reward God will do something for me.” The appeal of the theology of idols is the idea that if I move God, if I achieve something great, if I approach God with extreme sacrifice and devotion that others cannot match and make my demands, then God will give it to me.
After all, isn’t that how the entire world works? If you pay 1,000 won, you get 1,000 won worth of goods; if you pay 10,000 won, you get 10,000 won worth of goods. Because that transactional nature matches our instinct so well—believing God will answer us based on how much we have done—we are often drawn away from the theology of prayer taught by Jesus and toward the theology of idols of this world, treating God like an idol.
Yet God is not a merchant. God is not an idol. Who is God? He is our loving Heavenly Father. He is the Father who loves us so much that He gave His only Son up on the cross for us.
So what should we do? Whenever anything happens, we can simply speak to Him at any moment. “God, I need this. God, touch my heart. God, please save my son. God, help me. God, grant me wisdom.” He is not a God who only listens when we desperately hang on by a thread; He is a God who answers by giving us the very best because He loves us.
The problem is when there is no answer. There are so many times when we speak to God, but He does not answer right away. We wish God would answer immediately just as we prayed and spoke to Him, but when nothing seems to happen in our lives, as if God hasn’t heard our prayers at all, we are very easily lured into the theology of idols.
However, how should we respond? First, we must trust God. Even when a loving father or mother does not respond when spoken to, the lack of an answer is not because they didn’t hear or because they dislike us, but because there is another reason we do not yet know. If our desires differ from God’s will, and His will is wiser and greater than ours, and it feels like God did nothing after we prayed, we must not revert to the theology of idols or close our hearts thinking we can’t trust God. Instead, we must acknowledge that “though I do not understand, God is a righteous God” and trust Him.
Second, if God’s answer seems absent, we must wait. We want an immediate answer right this second, but God’s timetable is different from ours. If we are not yet ready, or for various reasons God’s timetable differs from ours, we must wait.
Third, we must meditate on what God’s will is. When we want to go a certain way by our preferred method, but God does not lead us there and instead guides us in an unexpected direction, we must meditate on God’s will to see what good plans He is orchestrating through that seemingly strange guidance.
Finally, we must offer up thanksgiving and praise. God’s will is always right, and even though we cannot see the final outcome right now, God is the God worthy of eternal praise and adoration. Therefore, what we ought to do is give thanks and praise.
Who is God? He is not a merchant who gives you a matching product based on what you pay Him; He is the God who gives us the very best because He loves us.
Recently, a Temu ad popped up. The ad promised to give away a video-recording gadget for free if you held it in your hand and filmed. Thinking, “Oh, if they’re giving it away for free, should I get one?”, I installed Temu and tried to order it, only to find out that I had to buy several items to get it for free. Thinking, “Ah, of course. There’s no such thing as a free lunch in this world,” I uninstalled Temu completely.
This world tempts us by saying we must give something up first in order to receive something. But God is not a merchant like that. God loved us so much that He gave His only Son for us. And even now, as our Shepherd and our loving Father, He bends His ear to our prayers, telling us at every single moment—whenever we are weary, lonely, or struggling—”Speak to Me, pray to Me, I will listen,” desiring to answer us.
Remembering this truth, rather than running to an idol only when we are in trouble—rather than approaching an idol with a bag of heavy money only in times of crisis—may we experience His amazing grace and love, just like we chat, call, and talk with our moms and dads every single moment. I bless you all in the name of the Lord.
