An Unexpected Grace for the Undeserving

Today’s story is about how Ben-hadad of Aram invaded Samaria, but by the grace of God, Israel defeated them.

Even today, war is terrifying because it brings immense devastation, but war in those days was even more so compared to modern warfare. This is because losing a war did not end with mere defeat; all the people of the vanquished nation were carried off as slaves. Beyond losing all their property and territory, all citizens—regardless of age or gender—became slaves to the opposing nation, leading to a truly miserable outcome. That is why it was such a terrifying war.

However, King Ben-hadad of Aram, a powerful nation surrounding Samaria, formed an alliance with 32 neighboring kings and invaded Samaria. Imagine how formidable the strength of that allied army must have been. Thus, the war began in a situation where defeating this coalition of kings was virtually impossible.

In those days, nations did not simply attack without notice; it was customary to send a messenger first to issue a declaration of war. The messenger would present terms of surrender. If the terms were accepted, Nation A could occupy Nation B according to those terms without engaging in battle. One could conquer an opposing nation without ever fighting. However, if the terms were rejected and the nation resisted, a formidable war was bound to break out. That was the nature of warfare at the time.

So, King Ben-hadad of Aram sent messengers first to state his demands: “We are about to wage war, and what we want is to take all your wives, children, and possessions.” That was the condition of surrender he presented. 1 Kings 20:3 records it as follows:

“Your silver and gold are mine; your fairest wives and children also are mine.”

He was demanding to take everything. How then did King Ahab of Israel answer? He surrendered without even putting up a fight. 1 Kings 20:4 says:

“And the king of Israel answered, ‘As you say, my lord, O king, I am yours, and all that I have.'”

He replied in that manner: “I surrender. Take everything. We will become your vassal state.” Why did King Ahab of Israel declare surrender without even fighting? What was the reason? Because he knew the outcome without needing to fight. He judged that with the military force of a small nation like Israel, they had no power to stand against the army of the powerful kingdom of Aram. Since they were bound to lose if they fought, is it better to surrender, or is it better to fight anyway? Anyone who says it is better to fight anyway is someone without a plan.

You fight only when you can win. Fighting only to lose brings even greater damage. Among the words Jesus gave us in Luke 14:31–32:

“Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.”

If it is clear that fighting will yield no victory, surrendering is the way to minimize damage, which is why surrender was declared.

However, human greed knows no bounds. Since Ahab agreed to surrender and Ben-hadad achieved his objective, did he simply say “Very well” and turn back? No, he did not. King Ben-hadad of Aram sent messengers once again, this time with a far more severe demand. 1 Kings 20:5–6 states:

“The messengers came again and said, ‘Thus says Ben-hadad: “I sent to you saying, ‘Deliver to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children’; nevertheless I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house and the houses of your servants and lay hands on whatever pleases you and take it away.”‘”

When Ahab shared this message before his elders, they said, “You must never consent to this.” Yet, it is easy for counselors to say “No.” They may appear righteous and like patriots who care for the nation. Anyone can speak words. But if they say “No,” they ought to present a solution; simply saying “No” without any plan is something anyone can do. If one says it cannot be accepted, they should offer a way to overcome it, yet Ahab was left with officials who merely said “No” without offering any alternative.

What is the difference between Ben-hadad’s first demand and his second demand? Reading carefully, does it feel as though there is no major difference between the two? It might not be immediately obvious. If we were to point out the difference, the first demand was simply to surrender and become a vassal state. The second proposal, however, meant that a mere vassal status was not enough. It meant the Aramean army would march in directly, search every single home, and plunder at will. While the first condition was limited to subjugation, the second was a threat to come in person and sweep everything clean.

1 Kings 20:10 expresses it this way:

“Ben-hadad sent to him and said, ‘The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me.'”

What does this mean? “Is not the property of you Samaritans utterly trivial, like mere dust? Even if we send our army to plunder everything, there will not be enough to satisfy our troops. If there were enough to satisfy them, may the gods bring severe judgment upon me.” He was threatening that even if they carried away every last thing, they would never be satisfied. Before such a threat, it was truly difficult to refuse.

How strikingly similar this is to our situation today. It resembles the current global situation where Trump of the United States imposes predatory tariffs across the world, threatening sanctions and treating nations as adversaries if they do not comply with his demands, leaving us with few ways to resist. It was a crisis where one could only think, “Now we are utterly ruined.”

Yet remarkably, toward Samaria in Northern Israel, God spoke an astounding word. 1 Kings 20:13 says:

“And behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel and said, ‘Thus says the Lord, Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will give it into your hand this day, and you shall know that I am the Lord.'”

Who was ruling Northern Israel in Samaria at this time? King Ahab. Had King Ahab repented? We have not read anywhere that he had repented. Though Elijah the prophet was victorious in the contest against the prophets of Baal, Jezebel was still fierce and determined to kill Elijah. Amid such circumstances, Ahab had never repented before God, saying, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Yet to this very King Ahab, God declared news of extraordinary grace.

Why did God bestow such grace upon King Ahab and the nation of Israel when they had not yet repented? Because God does not use only one method; He employs both the rod and grace. At times He lifts the rod to bring us back, and at other times He bestows His grace to urge us to repent and return.

Whether through discipline or by experiencing God’s grace, if only we return to God, that will be a blessing for us. If God were One who bestows grace only when we obey, none among us could ever receive His favor. We receive God’s grace not because we did our best, or because we were holy and perfect. We receive His favor because the Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, having pity on us and pouring out His grace. Through this story, we discover this truth once again.

Therefore, whenever we experience these things, we must realize that our God is truly a God of love and our salvation, and we must make a firm decision of faith to return to the Lord.

God brings salvation by lifting up the weak. To fight against the great nation of Aram, young men and people were gathered. The young men of the district governors numbered 232, and when the rest of the Israelites were counted, there were 7,000. Was this number sufficient to form a force capable of fighting the Aramean army?

Not in the slightest. Absolutely not. Victory could not be won with such numbers. Yet remarkably, King Ahab obeyed at that moment. This is what is truly amazing. Even the wicked King Ahab did not complain before God at this moment, but followed as instructed and went out to war. Leading 232 young men and 7,000 people into battle showed an attitude of obedience, which is a remarkable aspect despite his history of unbelief.

How could such a decision to obey come about? Because he realized he had no hope in himself. Just as General Naaman of Aram could obey when told to wash seven times in the Jordan River because he realized he had no other option—that no matter how strong or powerful he was, he could not cure his own disease—King Ahab also obeyed when he recognized there was no hope in himself. Remarkably, during that time, the King of Aram was drunk, ultimately bringing about a victorious outcome for Israel.

Today, we must remember this message. Rather than judging in advance and giving up, let us rely on God and obey as He leads, that all of us may enjoy God’s blessings.

At times, our lives may feel like Northern Israel standing before the Aramean army, as though there is no way forward. But in those moments, let us not despair or complain. Relying on God who loves us and leads us along the best and most gracious path, let us anticipate how He will bestow His grace upon us and enjoy His favor.
