오늘 말씀의 주제는 ‘풍성함의 비결’이라고 하는 제목을 가지고 함께 묵상하는 시간을 가지도록 하겠습니다. 우리는 어떻게 하면 풍성함을 얻을 수 있을까요? 풍성함을 얻게 되는 것은 우리 모두가 다 가지고 있는 아주 중요한 관심사라고 할 수가 있을 것입니다. 혹시 안 그러신 분 계신가요? 나는 싫다, 뭐 풍성해지는 거 싫다, 뭐 이러시는 분 계십니까? 아마 그런 분은 전혀 없을 거라고 생각이 듭니다. 우리들의 마음 가운데 가능하면 넉넉했으면 좋겠고 풍성했으면 좋겠다고 하는 그런 마음이 우리 모두에게 있는데요.

이렇게 풍성함을 누리고 싶어 하는 그러한 욕구는 그 자체로 잘못된 것이라고 할 수는 없을 것입니다. 우리가 허기가 진다면 무엇인가를 먹어서 그 허기를 충족시키고 그 허기를 해소시키고자 하는 갈망이 있는데, 그렇게 허기를 느낄 때 그 허기를 해소하려고 하는 그 갈망 자체가 잘못된 것이 아닌 것처럼, 우리들의 삶 가운데서 기왕이면 풍성했으면 좋겠고 기왕이면 넉넉했으면 좋겠다고 하는 그런 마음을 가지는 것 자체가 악하거나 나쁜 것이라고 말할 수는 없을 것입니다.

물론 어떤 종교에서는, 그리고 그런 종교들의 영향을 받은 사람들은 그렇게 풍성함을 가지려고 하는 것 자체를 악한 것이라고 생각하면서 그런 욕심들을 다 내려놓아야만 한다고 하는, 가능하지도 않고 바람직하지도 않은 것을 목표로 세우는 경우들도 우리 주변에 많이 있습니다마는, 그러나 사실 이렇게 우리가 무엇인가 부족한 것보다는 넉넉해지기를 원하고 풍성함을 추구하려고 하는 것은 그 자체가 악한 것이라고 말할 수는 없을 것입니다. 정당한 것이라고 할 수가 있는 것이죠. 하지만 이것이 정당하다고 해서 무한대로 정당한 것이 아니라 이러한 욕구가 아주 쉽게 잘못될 가능성이 많은 겁니다. 우리의 그 정당한 갈망, 정당한 욕구들이 아주 쉽게 잘못된 방향으로 표출이 되고 잘못된 방향으로 나올 수밖에 없는 그런 가능성들이 많은 것이라고 하는 점을 우리가 분명하게 기억할 필요가 있겠습니다.

그런데 그렇게 잘못될 가능성은 이런 물질적인 욕구에서만 잘못될 가능성이 있는 것이 아니라 모든 좋은 것들이 다 잘못될 가능성들이 항상 있는 것이죠. 모든 정당한 것들, 모든 좋은 것들이 지나치게 되면 잘못될 수밖에 없고, 그리고 잘못된 방법을 사용하면 악하게 될 수밖에 없고, 우리가 가지고 있는 그 어떠한 선한 동기도 사실은 잘못되고 악하게 사용될 그런 위험성이 늘 도사리고 있다고 하는 점은 우리가 주목해야 할 것이라고 생각이 듭니다. 이런 풍성함을 추구하고자 하는 그런 마음이 잘못되는 경우는 언제 그런 잘못된 길로 가게 되는 것일까요?

첫 번째는 부당한 방법을 사용할 때입니다. 우리가 많은 소유를 얻고 싶어 하고 풍성함을 얻고 싶어 하는데, 그 풍성함을 얻으려고 하는 것이 정당한 방법이 아니라, 바른 방법이 아니라 부당한 방법으로 남의 것을 탈취하는 그런 하나님의 뜻과는 정반대의 모습으로 그런 풍성함을 추구하려고 할 때 그것은 악한 일이 될 것입니다. 예를 들자면 도둑질하는 것이죠. 내가 땀을 흘리고 수고해서 정당한 노력의 대가로 소득을 얻는 것이 아니라, 내가 노력하지 않고 남의 것을 훔치면서 도둑질하면서 그래서 다른 사람들을 정말 마음 아프게 하고 그래서 잘못된 방법으로 풍성함을 추구하려고 하는 것은 잘못된 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다.

뿐만 아니라 우리가 재물을 추구하는 가운데 하나님을 의지하는 마음을 잃어버리고 재물에게만 의존하는, 마치 재물이 나를 살리는 것이냐 하나님은 필요 없다고 말하고 “돈만 있으면 된다, 풍성하기만 하면 된다”라고 하는 그런 잘못된 마음을 가질 때 잘못되는 결과가 나타나게 될 것입니다. 뿐만 아니라 지족을 모르게 된다고 하면 잘못되는 것이죠. 우리가 주어진 것을 만족해하고 내게 주어진 것에 대해서 감사하며 하나님의 은혜를 늘 생각하고 기뻐하는 모습을 가지는 것이 아니라, 늘 불평과 불만 가운데, 그리고 자기가 가진 것을 아주아주 싫어하면서 아주 너무나도 괴로워하면서 불평하고 원망하는 그런 모습을 보이게 되고 만족함을 모른다고 한다면, 기쁨을 잃어버리고 절망 가운데 있다고 한다면 이러한 욕구는 잘못된 길로 가게 될 것입니다.

더 나아가서 우리가 어떤 물질을 많이 가지게 되었을 때 자신에게 주어진 이것이 하나님께서 내게 맡겨 주신 청지기로서의 사명으로 주어진 것이라고 하는 사실을 망각해 버리는 경우도 역시 잘못된 길이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 하나님께서 주시는 그 모든 것들은, 우리가 가진 그 모든 것들은 다 목적이 있어서 우리들에게 주시는 것입니다. 그저 나 혼자 잘 먹고 나 혼자 편안하고 나만 행복하게 누리라고 우리에게 주시는 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 그 모든 것을 주시는 이유가 있다고 한다면 옆의 사람들을 도와주고 사랑을 베풀고 하나님의 그 은혜와 사랑을 이웃들에게 널리 전파하라고 하는 그런 사명으로 주신 것일 텐데, 그러한 사명들을 망각해 버린다고 하면 역시 이러한 정당한 욕구가 잘못된 것으로 가는 길이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다.

따라서 이런 잘못들을 피할 수만 있다면 더 많은 것을 얻고자 하는 풍성함을 추구하고자 하는 그런 마음은 자연스러운 욕구이며 정당한 것이지 비난받아야 할 이유는 전혀 아니라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그렇다고 한다면 과연 우리는 어떻게 풍성함을 누릴 수 있을까요? 모두가 다 풍성해지고 싶고 모두가 다 더 많은 것을 가지고 싶은 것이 우리 인간의 마음일 텐데 어떻게 하면 더 많이 얻을 수 있을까요? 어떻게 하면 더 많은 것을 얻는 그런 모습을 가지게 될 수 있을 것인가요?

오늘 잠언 12장 11절 말씀에서는 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. 한번 같이 읽어 보십시다. “자기의 토지를 경작하는 자는 먹을 것이 많거니와 방탕한 것을 따르는 자는 지혜가 없느니라” 먹을 것이 많아지려면 어떻게 해야 된다는 이야기입니까? 어떻게 해요? 자기의 토지를 어떻게 해야 된다는 거예요? 경작하라 이 말이에요. 땅이 있는데도 경작하지 않고 놀려 두면 먹을 것을 얻을 수가 없다는 거예요. 하지만 아침부터 일찍 일어나고 수고하며 땀을 흘리고 물을 주고 식물을 심고, 그리고 많은 곡식이 맺어지게 하기 위해서, 많은 열매가 나오게 만들기 위해서 부단히 노력을 하게 된다고 하면, 땀을 흘리고 수고하고 노력하면 많은 것을 얻게 될 것이라고 하는 것이 오늘 성경에서 가르쳐 주고 있는 교훈이라고 하는 것입니다.

그러니까 땅이 있으면 그 땅을 경작하게 된다면 많은 수확을 얻을 것이지만, 아무리 땅이 주어져 있다고 할지라도 그 땅을 경작하지 않고 아무런 수고도 하지 않는다고 하면 수확을 얻을 수 없다, 너무나도 지당한 말씀이죠. 당연한 말씀입니다. 근면하고 성실하게 일하면 풍성해질 것이지만 게으르고 나태하면 얻을 수 없다고 하는 것이 오늘 본문의 말씀입니다. 믿습니까? 그런데 땅이 없으면 어떡하죠? 땅을 경작하면 풍성해질 거라고 하는데 그렇게 경작할 땅이 없으면 어떻게 해야 합니까? 이 이야기는 땅을 경작하는 이야기를 말하고 있기는 하지만 땅을 경작하는 것만을 이야기하는 것이 아닙니다. 일종의 제유법적인 표현이라고 할 수가 있는 것이죠. 땅이 있는 사람이라고 한다면 땅을 열심히 경작해야 한다는 말을 하면서 이 말이 의미하고 있는 그 표현은 다른 직종에 있는 사람들에게도 충분히 적용이 가능한 말씀인 것입니다. 땅에 대한 이야기만이 아닌 거예요.

땅에 대한 이야기를 하고 있지만 땅에 대한 이야기만 하는 것이 아니라 다른 모든 영역에서도 똑같이 적용되는 이야기죠. 어부라고 한다면 어떻게 해야 됩니까? 열심히 고기를 낚아야 되는 거죠. 장사하는 사람이라면 어떻게 해야 됩니까? 열심히 장사를 해야 하는 것이죠. 땅이 아닌 다른 것을 가지고 있다고 한다면, 농부가 아닌 다른 직종에 있는 사람이라고 한다면 자기에게 맡겨진 그 땅, 자기에게 주어진 그 분야에서 최선을 다하고 열심을 다하고 그리고 땀을 흘리며 수고하게 될 때 많은 수확을 얻게 될 것이라는 말씀입니다. 만일 스포츠 선수라고 한다면 어떻게 해야 됩니까? 스포츠 선수라고 한다면 빨리 가서 농사를 짓는 게 아니고 뭘 해야 돼요? 자신의 기량을 키워야죠.

시즌이 끝나고 휴식기가 있으면 그 휴식기 기간 동안에 놀고 있는 것이 아니라 그 휴식 기간에 자신의 몸을 벌크업 시키고 자신이 부족했던 기능들은 더 닦아서 연마를 하고 자신의 장점들은 더 많이 연마를 해서, 그래서 다른 사람들보다 실력을 더 키워 나가야 그래야 풍성해진다 이 말이야. 이강인 선수가 그랬다고 그래요. 이번에 이강인 선수가 우리 동양인이라서 키도 작고 스페인 라리가에서 축구를 하는데 거기서 주전으로 뛰지 못하면서 많은 마음고생을 하고 있는데, 이번 쉬는 기간 동안에 어떻게 했는가, 자신의 장점을 더 개발해서 그래서 다른 사람들에게 자신의 실력을 어필하고 그래서 사람들에게 인정받기 위해서 그 시간에 열심히 노력했다는 거예요. 자신의 실력을 업그레이드시키기 위해서 최선의 노력을 하게 될 때, 아 이번 시즌은 좀 더 기대하고 봐야 되겠구나라고 기대할 수가 있게 되는 겁니다. 만일 학생이라고 한다면 어떻게 해야 됩니까? 학생이라고 한다면 공부를 열심히 해야 되는 거죠.

놀고 싶어도 딴짓하고 싶어도 재미가 없어도 내가 좀 더 공부를 더 열심히 하게 되면 좋은 결과를 얻게 될 것이라는 거예요. 자신의 영역에서 최선을 다해서 게으르지 않고 열심을 다하게 되는 자들이 풍성함을 얻을 수 있다고 하는 게 오늘 본문의 말씀이라고 하는 점을 분명하게 기억할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 이 만고불변의 진리인 것이죠. 그런데 이 말씀을 우리가 묵상하는 가운데 우리들의 마음 한가운데 질문이 떠오르는 겁니다. 하나님의 말씀이 말하기를 땀을 흘리고 수고하고 경작하면 풍성해질 거라고 하는데, 그런데 우리가 맞닥뜨리고 있는 현실은 어떤가 하는 것이죠. 성경을 보면 그 성경의 말씀이 맞는 것 같은데, 그런데 우리의 현실 세계 속에 들어가 보면 과연 이 말이 맞는가 질문을 던지게 되는 것이죠.

왜냐하면 이 세상에서 우리가 살아가는 우리 삶의 현장에서 누가 풍성함을 누리고 누가 풍성함을 누리지 못하고 있습니까? 열심히 수고하고 애쓴 사람이 풍성함을 누리고 있습니까? 그렇게 열심히 하는 것 같지 않아도 부모 잘 만나서 풍성함을 누리고 있는 사람들이 얼마나 많습니까? 그래서 우리 아이들의 꿈이 뭐냐면 건물주 자녀가 되는 게 꿈이래요. 그런데 우리 아버지가 노력을 안 해서 미치겠대요. 열심히 공부하고 열심히 수고해서 좋은 성적 올리고 좋은 대학에 가고 그래서 열심히 노력을 했는데, 그런데 그 사람이 정작 들어간 곳은 어디냐면 자기 같은 반에서 펑펑 놀면서 아무것도 하지 않고 그렇게 한량처럼 지냈지만 부모 잘 만나서 재벌의 아들네 회사에 들어가서 그 사람을 위해서 수고해 주는, 그 사람이 주는 월급을 받으면서 힘들게 힘들게 살아가고 있는 게 오늘 우리가 맞닥뜨리고 있는 현실입니다. 그래서 우리들의 마음 가운데 질문이 떠오르는 거죠. 정말 맞습니까? 하나님 정말 맞습니까? 열심히 수고하고 경작한 자가 풍성함을 얻을 거라는 게 이게 정말 맞는 하나님의 법칙입니까? 그런데 왜 오늘날 우리가 살고 있는 이 세상에서는 전혀 그런 것처럼 보이지 않습니까? 사실 오늘날 가난하게 사는 사람들을 향해서 당신들이 가난한 이유가 게으르기 때문이라고 말하면 미쳐 버릴 것 같아요. 왜냐하면 그 누구보다도 열심히 살고 있기 때문입니다.

새벽부터 일어나서 정말 열심히 수고하면서 밤늦게까지 열심히 일을 하고 있지만, 그러나 얻는 것은 겨우 조그만 돈 얼마 안 되는 몇 푼 받고 있는 삶을 살고 있는 게, 그렇게 열심히 살고 있는 사람들은 조금만 벌고 있는 반면에, 그런데 정말 많은 돈을 벌고 있는 사람은 누군가, 펑펑 놀고 있는 사람이에요. 아무것도 하지 않고 펑펑 놀고 있는데 그냥 주식 몇 개 사고 부동산 좀 구입하고 해서, 그리고 부모로부터 이렇게 물려받은 재물로 떵떵거리며 살고 있는 그런 모습을 보게 될 때 과연 하나님의 말씀이 맞는 겁니까라고 하는 질문이 우리들의 마음 가운데 솟아오르게 되는 것이죠.

열심히 일하고 수고한 자가 풍성함을 얻는가, 그게 아니라 사실은 우리들의 삶 가운데 구조적인 문제가 아주 뿌리 깊게 있어서 그 구조적인 문제를 어떻게 하지 않고서는 도무지 이 가난의 문제 이런 것들을 해결할 방법이 없다고 하는 게 바로 오늘날 우리가 맞닥뜨린 현실인 것입니다. 그래서 우리는 이 하나님의 말씀을 보면 하나님의 말씀대로 순종하며 살고 싶다가도 우리가 발을 내딛고 있는 이 세상이 돌아가는 꼴을 보면 성경적인 원리를 무시하고 그냥 이 세상의 방법대로 살아야 되겠다고 하는 그런 유혹을 많이 받게 되는 것이죠. 하지만 우리가 분명하게 기억해야 합니다. 정말 모순처럼 보이는 일들이 우리 눈앞에 펼쳐지고 있지만, 그러나 열심히 수고하고 땀을 흘린 자가 풍성함을 얻는다고 하는 것은 만고불변의 진리이며 하나님의 법칙이라고 하는 것이 옳습니다. 한번 도표를 보았으면 좋겠는데요. 원래 부자가 게으르면 그 가진 것에서 잃어버리는 결과를 가져오게 될 겁니다.

원래 가난한 자가 게으르면 더 가난하게 될 겁니다. 하지만 게으르지 아니하고 열심히 경작을 하고 땀을 흘리고 노력을 하게 되면, 원래 가난한 자는 그것보다는 좀 더 나아지는 것이 분명한 것이고, 원래 부자였던 사람도 열심히 경작하고 노력하면 더 많이 얻게 되는 것은 진리인 것이죠.

상대적으로 평가하게 되면, 그러면 원래 가난한 자가 열심히 경작하고 노력하는 것보다 원래 부자인 사람이 게을러도 그 사람보다는 더 적게 가지는 것처럼 보일 겁니다. 상대 평가로 하게 되면요. 하지만 게으르면 가진 것을 잃게 되고 더 가난하게 되는 것은 맞는 것이고, 더 열심히 노력하고 경작하고 노력하면 원래 있는 것보다 더 많이 얻고 더 나아지게 된다는 게 사실인 것이죠. 상대 평가에 의해서 우리들의 시각을 잃어버리지 않아야 할 것입니다.

풍성함의 비결은 무엇인가? 여러 이유들이 다 있을 겁니다. 우리들의 인생은 한 가지 대답만을 하기가 어려워요. 종종 무식한 사람들이, 종종 어리석은 사람들이 모든 문제를 그저 한 가지로만 해석하려고 하는 그런 경향들이 있습니다. 어떻게 하면 장수하는가, 어떻게 하면 단명하는가, 어떻게 하면 건강한가, 어떻게 하면 건강하지 못한가, 어떻게 하면 부자가 되는가, 어떻게 하면 가난하게 되는가에 대해서, 우리의 삶이 좋아지고 나빠지는 것에 대해서 보통 단순하게 생각하는 사람들은 그 이유를 한 가지로만 생각하는 것이죠. 말을 어떻게 했느냐에 따라서 설명하려고 하고, 그 사람의 삶의 태도, 인사 잘했냐 하지 않았느냐로 모든 걸 다 설명하려고 하고, 근데 그렇지 않아요. 우리들의 삶의 모든 요소들은 단 한 가지 요소로만 설명할 수가 없는 것입니다.

우리가 풍성하게 되고 풍성하지 않게 되고는 한 가지 요소로만 설명할 수 있는 것이 아니고 정말 많은 요소들이 합쳐지고 다 합쳐지고 복잡하게 작용해서 그래서 결과가 만들어지는 것인데, 그런데 그 수많은 요소들 가운데서 이 한 가지만 보자 이거예요. 이 한 가지만. 열심히 수고하고 땀을 흘리고 노력하는 자와 게으른 자 사이에 그 단면만 바라보게 된다면 그 면에 있어서는 이게 맞는 이야기다 이 말이죠. 따라서 오늘 잠언 12장 11절의 말씀을 보면서 우리들의 마음 가운데 풍성함에 대한 갈망이 있다면 열심히 살아야 됩니다. 간단합니다. 물론 열심히 사는 것만 가지고 되는 것이 아니고 여러 가지 요소가 더 추가돼야 되는 것이 맞겠죠.

하지만 적어도 이 분야, “열심히 해야 되느냐 그냥 게을러도 되느냐” 이 문제에 있어서만큼은 게으른 것은 답이 아니고 열심히 수고하고 경작하고 하는 게 그게 답이라고 하는 것을 오늘 우리들의 마음 가운데 분명하게 인식할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 그런데 잠언 12장 11절 하반절에서 무슨 이야기를 하냐면 **“방탕한 것을 따르는 자는 지혜가 없느니라”**라고 되어 있습니다. 자기의 토지를 경작하는 자는 먹을 것이 많겠지만 그 사람에 대비를 시켜서, 그러나 방탕한 것을 따르는 자는 지혜가 없다고 설명하고 있습니다. 방탕한 게 뭐죠? 술 먹고 즐기고 그냥 유흥을 즐기고 하는 것, 삶을 허비하는 것, 이것이 방탕이라고 할 수 있을 것인데요. 그러니까 열심히 노력하는 자는 풍성해지게 되겠지만 그냥 즐기고 방탕하고 이렇게 사는 사람들은 가난하게 될 것이다, 지혜가 없다 이런 이야기를 하고 있는 것인데요.

그런데 제가 히브리어 원문을 가만히 들여다보니까 ‘방탕’이라고 번역하기보다는 다른 말로 번역하는 것이 훨씬 더 맞을 것 같아요. 히브리어는 오른쪽에서 왼쪽으로 읽어 나가는데요. ‘우메라데프 레킴 하사르 레브’라고 하는 말인데 이것은 뭐냐 하면 방탕한 것이라기보다는 **“공허한 것을 추구하는 자는 마음이 공허할 것이다”**라고 번역하는 것이 훨씬 더 나을 것 같습니다. 공허한 것을 추구한다는 것이 무엇입니까? 헛된 것을 추구한다, 아무것도 아닌 것을 추구한다는 것이 무엇인가요? 그것은 어쩌면 그냥 우리 한국말 성경에서 방탕한 것, 먹고 마시는 것이라고 이렇게 표현했지만 그게 아니라 일확천금을 꿈꾸는 거죠. 내가 노력하지 않으면서 얻는 것을 추구하는 것이죠. 이렇게 내가 일확천금을 얻으려고 하고 수고의 땀을 흘려서 그 땀의 대가를 얻으려고 하는 것이 아닌, 요행을 바라고 일확천금을 꿈꾸는 그런 삶을 의미한다고 보는 것이 맞을 겁니다.

오늘날로 치면 어떤 것들이 있다고 말할 수 있을까요? 카지노에 간다든지 아니면 로또 같은 거를 한다든지, 그래서 나의 노력이 없이 그냥 어떤 내 요행을 바라면서 무엇인가 많은 것을 얻으려고 하는 사람은 어떻게 되는 것인가? 허망하고 공허하게 될 뿐이다라고 하는 것이 잠언 12장 11절의 말씀입니다. 계속해서 잠언 12장 12절 말씀에서는 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “악인은 불의의 이익을 탐하나 의인은 그 뿌리로 말미암아 결실하느니라” 허망한 것을 추구하는 것은 결국 어떤 것이 될까요? 단순히 요행이나 로또나 복권이나 이런 것들만이 아니라 더 어떤 것을 추구합니까? 악한 것이죠.

예를 들자면 도둑질을 해서 채우려는 것, 내가 땀을 흘리고 수고해서 얻는 것이 아니라 쉽게 사기를 쳐서 요행을 바라고 수고와 땀이 없는 상태에서 일확천금을 노리는 그 모든 것들이 잠언 12장 12절에서 말하는 것이고, 정당하지 않은 방법으로 그렇게 풍성함을 추구하는 것은 풍성해지는 것이 아니라 오히려 그것은 망하는 길이다라고 오늘 성경에서 가르쳐 주고 있는 것입니다. 사탄은 예수님에게 찾아와서 쉽게 얻는 방법을 제안했습니다. “네가 만일 나에게 경배하기만 하면 온 세상을 주겠다”고 유혹하였습니다. 십자가를 질 필요도 없고 수고하고 애쓸 필요도 없이 그냥 눈 감고 경배하기만 하면 온 세상을 얻을 수 있다고 하니 얼마나 좋은 제안입니까? 하지만 그것은 잠언 12장의 말씀에 의하면 그것은 헛된 유혹인 것이죠. 우리를 망하게 하는 유혹인데 예수님께서는 그것을 거부했습니다.

오늘 우리도 그런 유혹들이 있다면 거부해야 되는 것이죠. 땀을 흘리고 수고하고 애써서 내가 노력해서 얻으려고 하는 노력을 해야 할 것입니다. 잠언 12장 14절에서는 이렇게 표현하고 있습니다. “사람은 입의 열매로 말미암아 복록에 족하며 그 손이 행하는 대로 자기가 받느니라” 종종 우리 크리스천들 사이에는 허황된 꿈을 꾸는 사람들이 있습니다. 믿음을 표방하면서, 하나님에 대한 믿음을 표방하면서 허황된 꿈을 신앙으로 그렇게 포장하는 경우들이 많이 있습니다. 그래서 “내가 열심히 수고하지 않아도 하나님 앞에 기도하기만 하면 하나님께서 모든 것을 다 잘 해결해 주신다”라고 생각하는 사람이 있어요. 예전에 어떤 사람이 간증하는 것을 들었는데요, 그 사람은 한때 우리나라에서 아주 인기 있는 그런 간증을 하는 사람 가운데 한 사람이었습니다. 그 사람이 간증하기를 뭐라고 간증했냐면 시험 공부 하나도 안 했대요. 공부를 하나도 안 했대요. 그런데 하나님 앞에 기도했더니 다 백 점 맞게 해줬대요.

믿음만 가지면 점수 다 100점 맞을 수 있다고 하는 그런 간증을 그런 사람이 하더라고요. 아마 그 사람이 시험 공부 안 한 것이 사실일 수 있을 겁니다. 평상시 공부를 잘하고 똑똑한 사람은 시험 공부 안 해도 100점 맞을 수 있어요. 왜냐하면 평상시에 갈고닦은 실력이 있기 때문에, 지금까지 배워 놓은 그 실력이 있기 때문에 시험 공부해야 되는 그 기간인데 시험 공부 못하고 교회에서 일 있다고 하니까 “시험 공부하는 거보다 주의 일 힘쓰자” 하면서 주의 일 힘쓰고 그렇게 했는데도 100점 맞을 수 있을 거예요. 왜냐하면 평상시 실력이 그 정도 있기 때문이에요. 그래서 시험 안 보고 100점 맞은 게 뭐 충분히 가능할 수도 있고 불가능한 일도 아닐 것이고, 또 어떻게 보면 하나님의 은혜일 수도 있을 겁니다. 하지만 문제는 그런 간증을 들은 사람들이 잘못된 마음을 갖게 된다고 하는 데 문제가 있는 것이죠. “맞아, 내가 공부 안 해도 돼. 맞아, 내가 노력하지 않아도 돼. 기도하기만 하면 돼. 하나님 앞에 나아가기만 하면 돼. 내가 열심히 일 안 해도 헌금만 잘하면 돼. 내가 이 세상에서 열심히 수고하지 않아도 내가 주의 일만 열심히 하면 결국에는 다 될 거야”라는 그런 허황된 꿈을 심어 줄 위험이 있기 때문에 아주 위험한 간증일 거라고 제가 생각을 했습니다.

물론 그 뒤로 그런 똑같은 간증을 하는 사람이 나오질 않더라고요. 그 사람 방법대로 해서 그렇게 서울대학 간 사람이 없는 모양이에요. 아무튼 크리스천들 중에는 어떤 허황된 꿈을 꾸는 사람들이 있냐면, 내가 하나님 앞에 기도하면 노력하지 않아도 하나님께서 내 문제를 다 해결해 줄 거라고 그렇게 착각하는 분들이 많이 있습니다. 우리 가정에 부부 사이에 문제가 있으면 그 부부 사이의 문제를 해결하기 위해 내가 내 마음을 고쳐먹고 내 태도를 고쳐먹고, 내가 좀 더 용납하고, 그래서 좋은 분위기를 만들기 위해서 수고와 애쓰는 노력이 아무것도 하지 않으면서, 내 삶의 태도는 아무것도 바뀌지 않으면서 하나님 앞에 나와서 기도하면서 “하나님 우리 부부 사이를 좋게 해주세요” 그래, 기도만 하고 있다면 그건 엉터리예요.

공부도 하나도 하지 않으면서 “하나님 나 서울대학 가고 싶어요, 나 여기 가고 싶어요” 기도하면 순 엉터리예요. 장사를 제대로 열심히 하고 수고하고 노력하는 것은 아무것도 없이 “하나님 오늘 대박 나게 해주세요” 기도만 하고 있다면 그것은 잘못된 것이죠. 그것은 믿음처럼 보이지만 그것은 믿음이 아니라 하나님을 시험하는 일이 될 것입니다. 사탄은 예수님을 유혹하면서 성전 꼭대기에 세우고 그 성전 꼭대기에서 뛰어내리라고 이야기를 했습니다. 성전 꼭대기에서 뛰어내리면 성경에 분명하게 약속되어 있듯이 천사들을 동원하여 네 발이 상하지 않게 해 주실 거라고 하는 그 하나님의 말씀이 성경에 기록되어 있지 않느냐, 그러니 하나님만 의지하고 믿고 신뢰하고 성전 꼭대기에서 뛰어내려라 그러면 하나님께서 보호해 주실 거라고 이야기했습니다. 그때 예수님께서는 “맞아 하나님은 우리 아버지야. 하나님의 아들이야. 나는 보통 아들이 아니라 하나밖에 없는 아들이야. 그러니까 내가 떨어지면 하나님이 나를 보호해 줄 거야. 하나님이 진짜 나의 아버지니까 떨어져도 돼” 하면서 떨어지지 않았습니다.

그건 하나님을 시험하는 일이었기 때문에 그렇습니다. 마태복음 4장 5절에서부터 7절 말씀에 이렇게 기록됩니다. “이에 마귀가 예수를 거룩한 성으로 데려다가 성전 꼭대기에 세우고 이르되 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 뛰어내리라 기록되었으되 그가 너를 위하여 그의 사자들을 명하시리니 그들이 손으로 너를 받들어 발이 돌에 부딪히지 않게 하리로다 하였느니라 예수께서 이르시되 또 기록하였으되 주 너희 하나님을 시험하지 말라 하였느니라 하시니” 하나님을 시험하는 것은 무엇입니까? 하나님께서 보호해 주신다고 하는 것은 우리가 주의 일을 위해서 힘쓰고 애쓰다가, 내가 할 수 있는 최선의 노력을 하다가 그러다가 어려운 일을 만나게 될 때 지켜 주시고 보호해 주시겠다는 그런 의미이지, 우리가 물속에 뛰어들고 불속에 뛰어들고 사람들하고 싸우려 하고, 그 사람들과 칼싸움을 하면서 일부러 나의 목숨이 위험한 상태로 내 모습을 집어넣으면서 그래도 하나님께서 나를 지켜 줄 거라고 그렇게 생각해도 괜찮다는 이야기가 아니에요.

하나님께서 우리로 하여금 풍성함을 주신다고 하는 것은 하나님을 의지하고 믿는 자에게 하나님께서 상급이 되어 주시고 방패가 되어 주시고, 하나님께서 모든 것이 되어 주신다는 이야기는 그러니까 아무것도 하지 않고 하나님 앞에 기도하기만 하면 다 된다고 하는 그런 의미의 말씀이 아닌 겁니다. 수고하지 않고도 하나님께서 알아서 다 해 주시겠지 하는 것은 믿음이 아니라 하나님을 시험하는 불신앙인 것이죠. 시편 128편 1절에서 2절에 이렇게 기록합니다. “여호와를 경외하며 그의 길을 걷는 자마다 복이 있도다 네가 네 손이 수고한 대로 먹을 것이라 네가 복되고 형통하리로다” 수고하지 않아도 먹고살 것이다, 그냥 하나님만 믿으면 펑펑 놀아도 괜찮아, 하나님만 믿으면 내가 아무런 노력 하지 않아도 괜찮아라고 말씀하는 것이 아니고요. 하나님을 믿고 신뢰해서 하나님의 은혜를 받은 자는 어떤 자인가? 수고하고 애쓴 만큼 먹을 수 있는 것입니다.

우리는 열심히 살아야 합니다. 다섯 달란트, 두 달란트 맡은 종처럼 최선을 다해야 하는 겁니다. 그러나 우리들의 마음은 너무나도 완악해서 열심히 수고하고 애쓰며 살기보다는 우리들의 시각이 삐뚤어져서 남을 비판하고 불평하고 원망하며 아무런 노력을 하지 않아도 그저 일확천금을 할 수 있기를 갈망하며 사는 그런 잘못된 모습을 보여 줄 때가 너무나도 많이 있는데, 그럴 때마다 우리는 예수 그리스도의 십자가 앞에 나아가야 할 것입니다. 주님 저희들의 마음을 씻어 주시고 거룩하게 해 주셔서 예수 그리스도의 보혈의 피로 회복시켜 주셔서 하나님의 뜻을 온전히 깨닫고 믿음으로 살 수 있게 하여 주옵소서. 하나님의 뜻에 순종하며 살게 하여 주옵소서. 믿음으로 결단하며 나아가는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

The Secret of Abundance: Labor, Wisdom, and Faith

Today, we will take time to meditate together on the theme of “The Secret of Abundance.” How can we obtain abundance? Achieving abundance is a very important concern that almost all of us share. Is there anyone here who feels differently? Does anyone say, “I hate it; I don’t want to be abundant”? I believe there is no such person. In our hearts, we all have a desire to be well-off and to live in plenty.

This desire to enjoy abundance is not inherently wrong. If we are hungry, we have a longing to eat and satisfy that hunger; just as the desire to alleviate physical hunger is not wrong, having a heart that wishes for life to be plentiful and sufficient is not evil or bad.

Of course, in some religions—and among those influenced by them—the pursuit of abundance itself is viewed as evil, and people are told they must set aside all such desires. We see many around us setting goals that are neither possible nor desirable in that regard. However, wanting to be sufficient rather than lacking and pursuing abundance is not evil in itself. It can be considered a legitimate desire. Yet, just because it is legitimate does not mean it is valid without limits. We must clearly remember that this desire can very easily go astray. There are many possibilities for our legitimate longings and desires to be expressed in the wrong direction.

The possibility of going astray exists not only in material desires but in all good things. When any legitimate or good thing becomes excessive, it inevitably goes wrong. If a wrong method is used, it becomes evil. We must note that a danger always lurks where even our good motives can be used wrongly and wickedly. When does the heart that pursues abundance stray onto the wrong path?

First, it is when unjust methods are used. We want to possess much and gain abundance, but if we pursue it through unjust or incorrect ways—snatching what belongs to others, acting in total opposition to God’s will—it becomes a wicked deed. An example is theft. Instead of earning an income as a reward for legitimate effort and the sweat of one’s brow, pursuing abundance by stealing without effort and causing pain to others is wrong.

Furthermore, we go astray when we lose our heart of dependence on God while pursuing wealth and instead rely solely on the wealth itself—as if wealth were the one thing keeping us alive, saying we don’t need God and that “money is enough, as long as I am abundant.” Additionally, things go wrong when we do not know contentment. Instead of being satisfied with what is given, giving thanks, and rejoicing in God’s grace, if we live in constant complaining and dissatisfaction—hating what we have, living in agony and resentment, and losing joy to despair—then this desire has moved onto the wrong path.

Moreover, it is a wrong path when we forget the fact that the material things given to us are a mission entrusted to us as stewards. Everything God gives us, everything we possess, is given for a purpose. It is not given simply for us to eat well, be comfortable, and be happy alone. If there is a reason God gives us these things, it is to help the people next to us, to show love, and to widely spread God’s grace and love to our neighbors. Forgetting this mission is also a way that this legitimate desire turns into something wrong.

Therefore, as long as we can avoid these errors, the heart that pursues abundance and wants to gain more is a natural desire and a legitimate one; there is no reason for it to be criticized. If that is the case, how can we actually enjoy abundance? Since it is the human heart to want to be abundant and possess more, how can we gain more? How can we become those who acquire more?

Proverbs 12:11 records the following. Let us read it together: “Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” According to this, what must one do to have much food? How? What must one do with their land? Cultivate it. If you have land but leave it idle without cultivating it, you cannot obtain food. However, if you wake up early, toil, sweat, provide water, and plant—if you make constant efforts to ensure many crops are produced and much fruit comes forth—the lesson the Bible teaches is that you will obtain much through that sweat and toil.

In other words, if you cultivate the land you have, you will gain a great harvest; but no matter how much land is given, if you do not cultivate it and put in no effort, you cannot reap. This is a very sound and obvious word. The message of today’s text is that if you work diligently and faithfully, you will be abundant, but if you are lazy and idle, you cannot gain. Do you believe this? But what if you have no land? It says you will be abundant if you cultivate land, but what if there is no land to cultivate? While this speaks of cultivating land, it is not only about farming. It is a form of synecdoche. For those who own land, it means they must cultivate it diligently, but the meaning behind the expression is fully applicable to those in other professions as well. It is not only about the soil.

While it speaks of the land, it applies equally to all other areas. If you are a fisherman, what must you do? You must fish diligently. If you are a merchant, you must do business diligently. If you have something other than land—if you are in a profession other than farming—it means you will obtain a great harvest when you do your best, work hard, and sweat in the “land” entrusted to you, in the field given to you. If you are an athlete, what must you do? You don’t go and farm; what should you do? You must build your skills.

When the season ends and there is a break, you don’t just play; during that rest period, you bulk up your body, refine the skills you lacked, and polish your strengths more so that you improve your abilities beyond others—that is how you become abundant. They say Lee Kang-in did this. Being an Asian player of smaller stature playing in the Spanish La Liga, he went through much heartache when he couldn’t play as a starter. During his time off, he developed his strengths further to appeal to others with his skill and gain recognition. When one makes the utmost effort to upgrade their skills, people can look forward to the next season. If you are a student, what must you do? You must study hard.

Even if you want to play or do other things, even if it’s not fun, if you study harder, you will get good results. I pray in the name of the Lord that we clearly remember the word of today’s text: those who do their best in their own field, not being lazy but working with passion, can obtain abundance. This is an eternal truth. However, as we meditate on this word, a question arises in the middle of our hearts. God’s Word says that if we sweat, toil, and cultivate, we will be abundant, but what is the reality we face? The Bible’s word seems correct, but when we enter our real world, we find ourselves asking if this word is truly true.

This is because, in the fields of life where we live, who is enjoying abundance and who is not? Is it the one who toils and struggles? How many people are there who don’t seem to work hard but enjoy abundance because they were born to the right parents? This is why our children’s dream is to be the child of a building owner. They say it’s maddening that their own father doesn’t put in that kind of “effort.” A person studies hard, toils, gets good grades, goes to a good university, and makes every effort; but the place they actually end up is a company owned by the son of a tycoon—someone who played around in the same class and did nothing but was born to the right parents. The hardworking person ends up struggling to live on the salary that person gives them. This is the reality we face today. So the question arises: Is this really true? God, is this really Your law—that the one who toils and cultivates gains abundance? Why does it not seem that way at all in the world we live in today? In fact, if you tell people living in poverty today that the reason they are poor is because they are lazy, they might feel driven to madness. Because they are living more diligently than anyone else.

They wake up at dawn and work truly hard until late at night, yet they only receive a few pennies. While those living so diligently earn so little, who is earning the big money? Often it is the person who is playing around. They do nothing but play, yet they buy some stocks or real estate, or they live grandly on the wealth inherited from their parents. Seeing this, the question of whether God’s Word is true rises in our hearts.

Is it the one who works hard and toils that gains abundance? Or is it that structural problems are so deeply rooted in our lives that without doing something about those structures, there is no way to solve the problem of poverty? This is the reality we face. Therefore, even when we want to obey God’s Word, when we see how this world turns, we are tempted to ignore biblical principles and just live according to the ways of the world. However, we must remember clearly: though things that look like contradictions unfold before our eyes, it remains an eternal truth and God’s law that the one who toils and sweats gains abundance. Let’s look at it this way: If a rich person is lazy, they will result in losing what they have.

If a poor person is lazy, they will become even poorer. However, if they are not lazy and they cultivate diligently, sweat, and make an effort, it is certain that the poor person will become better off than they were. Likewise, if a rich person cultivates and works hard, it is a truth that they will gain even more. If we evaluate relatively, it may seem that a rich person who is lazy still has more than a poor person who works hard. That is true in a relative evaluation. However, it remains true that laziness leads to losing what one has and becoming poorer, while hard work and cultivation lead to gaining more and becoming better than before. We must not lose our perspective to relative evaluations.

What is the secret of abundance? There will be many reasons. It is difficult to give just one answer for our lives. Sometimes foolish or simple-minded people try to interpret every problem with just one cause. Regarding how one lives long, how one dies young, how one is healthy or unhealthy, how one becomes rich or poor—people who think simply about the improvement or decline of life try to find only one reason. They try to explain everything by how one spoke, or by their attitude, or whether they greeted others well. But that is not so. All elements of our lives cannot be explained by just a single factor.

Becoming abundant or not cannot be explained by one element alone; it is the result of many factors combining and interacting in complex ways. However, let us look at this one factor among the many. Let us look only at the cross-section between the one who toils and sweats and the one who is lazy. In that regard, this word is true. Therefore, looking at Proverbs 12:11, if there is a longing for abundance in our hearts, we must live diligently. It is simple. Of course, living diligently alone is not everything; other factors must be added.

But at least in this area—the question of “should I work hard or can I be lazy”—laziness is not the answer. Toiling and cultivating is the answer. I pray in the name of the Lord that we clearly recognize this in our hearts. However, the latter half of Proverbs 12:11 says, “but those who chase fantasies have no sense.” It contrasts the one who cultivates their land with the one who chases fantasies. What is a “fantasy” or “worthless pursuit”? It might be drinking, playing, seeking only entertainment, and wasting life. While the one who works hard becomes abundant, the one who just plays and chases fantasies will become poor and lacks wisdom.

But as I looked closely at the original Hebrew text, I think it is much more accurate to translate “fantasies” or “worthless things” in a specific way. The Hebrew reads u’meradef reqim chasar lev, which means “he who pursues empty things lacks heart (sense).” What does it mean to pursue empty things? To pursue worthless things, to pursue nothing? Our Korean Bible translates it as “dissipation” or “chasing vanities,” but it refers to dreaming of a “windfall.” It is pursuing gain without effort. It refers to a life that dreams of hitting the jackpot and hopes for a stroke of luck rather than the reward of sweating and toiling. What would that look like today?

It’s like going to a casino or playing the lotto—someone who wants to gain much by just hoping for luck without their own effort. What happens to them? Proverbs 12:11 says they will only become vain and empty. Continuing in Proverbs 12:12, it says: “The wicked desire the stronghold of evildoers, but the root of the righteous flourishes.” What does pursuing vain things eventually lead to? It’s not just luck or the lotto; what else do they pursue? Evil.

For example, trying to fill one’s needs through theft—not gaining through sweat and toil, but trying to hit the jackpot through easy scams and luck without labor. This is what Proverbs 12:12 speaks of. Pursuing abundance through unjust methods is not the way to become abundant; rather, the Bible teaches us today that it is the path to ruin. Satan approached Jesus and suggested an easy way to gain. He tempted Him, saying, “If you will only bow down and worship me, I will give you the whole world.” It was a suggestion that He didn’t need to bear the cross or toil; he could gain the world just by closing His eyes and worshiping once. How “good” an offer does that seem? But according to Proverbs 12, that is a vain temptation. It is a temptation that ruins us, and Jesus rejected it.

Today, if we face such temptations, we must reject them as well. We must make the effort to gain through sweating, toiling, and working hard. Proverbs 12:14 expresses it this way: “From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands rewards them.” Often among us Christians, there are people who dream hollow dreams. Under the guise of faith, they wrap hollow dreams in “faith in God.” They think, “Even if I don’t work hard, if I just pray to God, He will solve everything well for me.” I once heard a person’s testimony; they were one of the most popular testifiers in our country at the time. They testified that they never studied for exams. They didn’t study at all. But they said when they prayed to God, He made them get 100 points on everything.

That person testified that if you only have faith, you can get 100 points. It might be true that they didn’t study for the exam. A person who is usually a good student and smart can get 100 points even without cramming. Because they have the skills they’ve honed normally, they might spend the exam period doing “the Lord’s work” at church and still get 100 points because of their existing ability. So, getting 100 points without cramming might be possible, and in a way, it could be God’s grace. However, the problem is that people who hear such a testimony develop a wrong heart. “That’s right, I don’t have to study. I don’t have to make an effort. I just have to pray. I just have to go before God. I don’t have to work hard; I just have to give offerings well. Even if I don’t toil in this world, if I just work hard on ‘the Lord’s work,’ everything will work out in the end.” I thought it was a very dangerous testimony because it risks planting such hollow dreams.

Of course, after that, no one else came forward with the same testimony. It seems no one got into Seoul National University using that person’s method. At any rate, among Christians, there are many who mistakenly think that if they pray, God will solve all their problems without their effort. If there is a problem between a husband and wife, and I do nothing to change my own heart or attitude—if I make no effort to be more accepting or to create a good atmosphere—but just pray, “God, make our relationship good,” while my lifestyle doesn’t change at all… then that prayer is a sham.

If you don’t study at all but pray, “God, I want to go to Seoul National University,” it’s a total sham. If you put no effort into doing business properly but just pray, “God, let me hit the jackpot today,” that is wrong. It looks like faith, but it is not faith; it is testing God. Satan tempted Jesus by setting Him on the highest point of the temple and telling Him to jump off. He said that since it is clearly promised in the Bible that God will command His angels so that His foot will not strike a stone, Jesus should just trust God and jump. Then Jesus said, “That’s right, God is my Father. I am the Son of God. I am not just any son, but the only Son. So if I fall, God will protect me. Since God is truly my Father, it’s okay to fall”—wait, no, He didn’t fall.

He didn’t jump because that was testing God. Matthew 4:5–7 records: “Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down. For it is written: “He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”‘ Jesus answered him, ‘It is also written: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”‘” What is testing God? God’s protection means He will guard and protect us when we encounter difficulties while striving for His work and making our own best efforts. It does not mean we can dive into water or fire, or start a fight with others, or intentionally put our lives in danger and expect God to save us anyway.

The fact that God gives us abundance and becomes a reward and a shield to those who trust Him does not mean we can do nothing and just pray. Thinking God will take care of everything without our toil is not faith; it is a lack of faith that tests God. Psalm 128:1–2 records: “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours.” It does not say you will eat without toiling. It does not say that if you just believe in God, you can just play around and make no effort. What is the one who believes, trusts, and receives God’s grace like? They eat what they have toiled and struggled for.

We must live diligently. Like the servants entrusted with five or two talents, we must do our best. However, our hearts are so stubborn that instead of toiling, our vision becomes crooked; we criticize others, complain, and resent while longing to hit the jackpot without effort. Every time we show such a wrong appearance, we must go before the Cross of Jesus Christ. “Lord, wash our hearts and make them holy. Restore us with the blood of Jesus Christ so that we may fully realize Your will and live by faith. Let us live in obedience to Your will.” I pray in the name of the Lord that we all become those who decide and advance with faith.
