우리가 살아가는 이 세상에서 공의로운 판단이 이루어지는 것은 아주 중요합니다. 공의로운 판단이 이루어질 때 우리가 그나마 행복하게 살아갈 수가 있는 것이죠. 행복한 삶을 누리기 위해서는 모든 것들이 공평하고 공정하게 진행이 될 때 그때 우리는 행복한 삶을 살아갈 수가 있을 것입니다. 만일 어떤 사람이 선한 일을 행했다고 한다면 그 선한 사람에게는 그의 마땅한 보상이 이루어지는 것이 공정한 것이 되겠고, 만일 어떤 사람이 악을 행했다고 한다면 그 악을 행한 것에 응당한 처벌이 내려져야 그런 사회가 공평한 사회라고 할 수가 있겠고, 그러한 공정함이 제대로 잘 유지되는 세상이라야 모든 사람들이 참 자신의 삶을 행복하게 잘 살아갈 수 있을 것이라고 믿습니다. 그렇게 공정한 세상이 되는 것이 어쩌면 행복한 삶을 누리기 위한 전제 조건이라고 할 수가 있는 것이죠. 하지만 우리가 실제로 살아가는 이 세상이 어떠한 세상이라고 생각이 드십니까? 어떠한 일들이 많이 벌어진다고 생각을 하십니까?
안타깝게도 공의로운 판결이 이루어지기보다는 부당한 일들이 여기저기서 많이 일어나는 것을 보면서 참 마음 아픈 그런 때를 많이 경험하게 될 것입니다. 그것은 단순히 재판정에서만 일어나는 일이 아니라 우리가 살아가는 우리 모든 삶 자체가 어쩌면 일종의 재판과 같다고 할 수가 있겠는데요. 우리들이 살아가는 이 삶의 현장 가운데서 공의로운 판결, 제대로 된 평가 이런 것들이 잘 이루어져야 할 텐데 그런 일들이 잘 이루어지지 않는다고 한다면 참 힘들고 어려운 것이죠. 특별히 우리 자녀들과 우리 부모님들과의 관계 가운데서도 부모님들이 우리 자녀들을 대할 때 자녀들이 부모님의 평가를 들으면서 자라게 됩니다. 부모님들이 자녀들을 어떻게 바라보고 있는가, 우리 자녀들을 잘 평가해 주고 그 했던 모든 것들에 대해서 제대로 인정해 주고 한다고 하면 우리 자녀들이 신이 나는 거죠. 우리 자녀들이 너무나도 즐거움 가운데 행복하게 살아갈 수가 있게 되는 것이죠.
하지만 만일 우리 자녀들이 무엇인가 열심히 하려고 하고 있음에도 불구하고 부모님이 늘 핀잔만 하고 너는 왜 그 모양이냐, 너는 왜 그런 식이냐 하면서 그런 평가를 내리게 될 때, 자녀들이 아 내가 부당한 평가를 받고 있다고 생각이 되면 잘못된 길로 삐뚤어진 길로 갈 가능성들이 많이 있는 겁니다. 따라서 이런 판단이라고 하는 것이 재판정에서만 이루어지는 것이 아니라 모든 우리 살아가는 모든 분야 내에서 이러한 판단들이 이루어지고 있다고 할 수가 있겠는데요. 모든 공동체 속에서 모든 사람들과의 관계 속에서, 이런 직장에서든지 교회에서든지 아니면 가정에서든지 그리고 인간관계 속에서 어떤 사람들을 제대로 인정해 주느냐 인정받지 못하느냐 하는 이 이슈가 정말 큰 문제로 다가온다고 하는 사실을 알 수가 있을 것입니다. 요즘 한참 동계 올림픽이 진행되고 있는데요. 스포츠를 보면 참 즐거움이 많습니다. 그나마 스포츠가 대중적인 인기를 끌고 있는 이유가 무엇일까요?
그나마 어쩌면 좀 불공평한 이 세상 가운데서도 그나마 제대로 된 판결이 이루어지는 곳이 스포츠 분야이기 때문이 아닐까 싶습니다. 누가 금메달을 따게 되는가, 좋은 성적을 올린 사람이 그 사람이 아무리 힘이 없는 나라에서 왔든 그 사람이 아무리 정말 어려운 환경에서 왔든 그것과 상관없이 오로지 그 사람의 실력으로만 평가를 받아서 세계 최상의 기량을 마음껏 발휘하게 될 때 그동안 흘렸던 땀과 눈물과 수고와 모든 것들이 금메달이라고 하는 그 메달로서 보상을 받고 그리고 평가를 받게 될 때 선수는 너무나도 좋아서 기뻐 눈물을 흘리게 되는 것이고 그것을 바라보는 우리 수많은 사람들도 함께 기뻐하고 즐기는 그런 일들이 일어나게 되는 것입니다. 그런데 그런 스포츠계 내에서도 만일 평가가 잘못된다고 한다면 분노가 일어나게 되고 스트레스를 받게 되고 여러 가지 많은 잘못된 감정들이 나타나게 된다고 하는 것이죠.
우리가 살아가는 이 세상의 많은 분야에서 수많은 평가들이 이루어지고 판단들이 이루어지고 있는데 그런데 제대로 된 판단이 이루어지지 않게 되는 그 이유들이 어디에 있을까요? 어쩌면 그것 중에 하나가 잘못된 증인 때문이라고도 할 수가 있겠습니다. 오늘 잠언 19장 28절의 말씀에서 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. **“망령된 증인은 정의를 업신여기고 악인의 입은 죄악을 삼키느니라”**라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 망령된 증인이라고 하는 말은 무슨 말이냐 하면, 망령된이라고 번역한 이 말은 ‘벨리야알’이라고 하는 말인데 쓸모없는, 무가치한, 사악한이라고 하는 그런 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 정말 사악한 증인은 어떠한 사람인가? 정의를 업신여기는 사람이 사악한 증인이다. 정의를 조롱하며 비웃는 사람이 그 사람이 사악한 증인이라 이야기하고 있는 것이고요.
악인의 입은 죄악을 삼킨다고 되어 있는데 원래 잘못된 것을 보면은 토해내야 정상일 텐데 먹지 않고 이건 못 먹을 것이라고 하면서 뱉어내야 정상일 텐데, 악인의 입은 먹지 못할 것마저도 삼키면서 그래서 정의를 왜곡시켜버리는, 그리고 나쁜 짓이 일어난다고 할지라도 개의치 않는 모습들에 대해서 이야기해 주고 있습니다. 이렇게 악한 증인들이, 망령된 증인 그리고 사악한 증인들이 이렇게 거짓 정의를 업신여기면서 재판을 굳게 만드는 이유가 어디에 있겠습니까? 그것은 바로 하나님을 두려워하지 않기 때문에 그런 것이죠. 만일 우리가 하나님을 두려워한다고 한다면 그럴 수는 없는 것입니다. 공의의 하나님이 계시다고 하는 사실을 안다고 하면, 하나님께서 계시고 모든 것을 심판하시는 하나님이 계시다고 하는 사실이 있다고 한다면 그러면 우리는 거짓 증인이 될 수가 없는 것이죠. 잘못된 일에 옳다고 말하고 옳은 일에 대해서 아니라고 말할 수가 없는 것이죠.
그런데 이 세상에서 수많은 일들이 일어나고 있는데 잘못된 판단들이 일어나고 있고 그리고 악을 선하다고 하고 선을 악하다고 말하는 이렇게 정의를 굳게 만드는 일들이 많이 일어나는 이유가 무엇인가, 그것은 하나님이 계시지 않다고 확신하고 있기 때문에 이런 일들이 일어나는 것이라고 할 수 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 하나님을 믿지 않을 뿐만 아니라 돈이 우리들의 우상이 되어 버리면 그런 현상들이 나타나게 되어 있습니다. 나에게 있어서 누가 하나님인가? 하나님이 나의 하나님이라고 한다면 우리는 악한 것을 선하다고 말할 수가 없는 것이죠. 하나님이 정말 나의 하나님이라고 한다면 거짓 증인이 될 수가 없는 것이죠. 하지만 하나님이 아니라 돈이 우상이 되면 그 돈 때문에 거짓말하고 돈 때문에 잘못된 증언을 하고 정의를 굳게 하는 일들이 많이 발생하게 된다고 하는 것입니다. 사실 돈이라고 하는 것은 무엇인가? 하나님과 비슷한 면을 가지고 있습니다.
돈이 어떤 면을 가지고 있기 때문에 하나님과 비슷하다고 할 수가 있는 것이죠? 돈은 전능성이 있습니다. 하나님이 전능하신 하나님이라고 아는데, 돈도 그런 하나님과 비슷하게 전능성을 가지고 있어서 돈만 있다고 한다면 안 되는 일이 없고 돈만 있다고 한다면 모든 것들을 다 해내기 때문에 돈이라고 하는 그 자체가 우리 수많은 사람들에게 마치 하나님처럼 느껴지게 만드는 그런 요소가 돈에게 있는 것이죠. 그래서 그 돈이 시키는 대로 나의 이익을 위해서라고 한다면, 내가 무엇인가를 많이 얻을 수 있다고 한다면 잘못된 증언, 잘못된 그런 거짓 증언들을 통해서 이 세상을 불공평하게 만들고 악하게 돌아가게 만드는 일에 함께하는 그런 안타까운 결과를 가져오게 되고야 마는 것입니다. 하지만 우리가 분명하게 기억할 것이 있다고 하면 무엇일까요? 돈과 하나님이 비슷해 보이기는 하지만 그러나 돈은 결코 하나님이 될 수가 없다고 하는 것입니다.
돈은 무엇입니까? 하나님과는 달리 우리를 파멸로 이끄는 존재인 것이죠. 결국 그 돈은 우리의 행복을 앗아가 버리고 우리가 그 돈을 우상으로 삼기 시작할 경우에, 그 돈을 적당히 우리가 활용하고 이용하는 것까지는 괜찮겠지만 그러나 그 돈을 우상으로 생각하고 그래서 돈이 시키는 대로 거짓말하고 돈이 시키는 대로 악한 일을 하게 된다고 한다면 어떻게 될 것인가, 결국 우리가 패망의 길로 가게 되는 것이죠. 약속한 그 행복을 돈이 주는 것이 아니라 오히려 우리를 더 힘들게 만들고 고통스럽게 만들어 버리는 결과를 가져오기 때문에 우리는 늘 신실하게 하나님을 섬기면서 하나님께서 원하시는 거룩하고 정의로운 길에 우리 모두가 설 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 안타깝게도 우리 크리스천이라고 스스로를 말하는 사람들 가운데서 하나님을 믿는다고 말은 하지만 사실은 하나님을 믿는 것이 아니라 돈을 우상으로 섬기는 사람들이 많이 있습니다. 그리고 교회 안에 그런 사람들이 숨어 들어와 있을 수가 있는 것이지요.
그러한 사람들에게 속아 넘어갈 것이 아니라 우리는 항상 진리의 말씀에 귀를 기울여야 되고 하나님 앞에 진실하게 서면서 하나님께서 우리에게 말씀하시는 것이 무엇인지를 기억하며 거룩의 길로 나아가는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 그런데 오늘 잠언 19장 29절의 말씀에서 무슨 이야기를 하고 있습니까? “심판은 거만한 자를 위하여 예비된 것이요 채찍은 어리석은 자의 등을 위하여 예비된 것이니라” 심판은 거만한 자를 위하여 예비되어 있다고 하는데, 여기서 말하는 거만한 자가 어떤 사람일까요? 거만한 자, 그 거만한 자는 바로 정의를 버리는 사람을 거만한 자라고 하겠습니다. 28절에서 그렇게 망령된 증인은 정의를 업신여긴다라고 표현하고 있는데 망령된 증인은 정의를 어떻게 하는가, 정의를 우습게 한다는 거죠. 정의를 비웃어버린다고 하는 것이죠. 그러니까 바로 망령된 증인이 교만한 자가 되는 겁니다. 거만한 자가 되는 것이죠.
그런 거만한 자, 망령된 증인에게, 거짓 증인에게 무엇이 준비되어 있는가? 하나님의 심판이 준비되어 있다고 오늘 말씀에 기록되어 있고, 그런 어리석은 자를 위해서 그 어리석은 자의 등을 위하여서 채찍이 준비되어 있다고 말씀하고 있는 겁니다. 결국 하나님을 두려워하지 아니하고 악을 행하는 자, 거짓 증언을 하는 사람들은 어떻게 될 것인가, 하나님의 채찍에 맞을 것이다 그렇게 경고하고 있다고 하는 것을 기억해야 되는데요. 채찍에 맞는다고 했으니까 어떻게 하면 되나요? 까짓거 채찍 몇 대 맞으면 됩니까? 그게 아니고 하나님의 채찍이 그냥 몇 대 맞아도 되는 게 아니라 그것은 완전히 우리를 파멸로 이끄는 그런 채찍이라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 우리가 두려워하는 마음으로, 내가 만일 악의 편에 선다면 내가 만일 거짓 증인이 된다고 한다면 내가 돈을 위해서 잘못된 길로 나아가게 된다면 우리에게 무엇이 기다리고 있는가, 하나님의 심판이 기다리고 있다.
지금 당장 우리에게 돈이 굴러 들어올 수도 있겠고 이득이 생길 수도 있을지 모르지만, 그러나 만일 우리가 돈을 우상으로 섬기면서 거짓을 향해서 나아가게 된다고 한다면 잘못을 하게 된다고 하면 어떻게 되는가, 하나님의 영원한 심판, 하나님의 영원한 채찍질이 있어서 우리가 결국 망할 수밖에 없다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 우리가 경각심을 가지고 하나님을 두려워하는 마음으로 우리가 진리 가운데 서는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 사실 우리들은 증인이 되기도 하고 재판관이 되기도 하고, 재판장에 가는 것뿐만이 아니라 우리의 실생활에서 늘 다른 사람들에 대해서 판단하고 증언하는 일들을 하면서 살게 되어 있습니다.
그래서 이 말씀이 재판정에 관한 말씀으로 설명되어 있지만, 재판정이 아닌 우리들의 24시간 내내의 삶 가운데서도 우리는 늘 무엇인가를 판단하고 무엇인가를 증언하고 사는 삶이기 때문에 그럴 때 우리는 어떻게 살아야 되는가 하나님의 말씀을 깊이 묵상하면서 하나님의 뜻에 맞는 그런 삶을 살아가는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 예수님께서 하신 말씀이 무슨 말씀입니까? 마태복음 7장 1절에서부터 5절 말씀에 이렇게 말씀해 주셨습니다. “비판을 받지 아니하려거든 비판하지 말라 너희가 비판하는 그 비판으로 너희가 비판을 받을 것이요 너희가 헤아리는 그 헤아림으로 너희가 헤아림을 받을 것이니라 어찌하여 형제의 눈 속에 있는 티는 보고 네 눈 속에 있는 들보는 깨닫지 못하느냐 보라 네 눈 속에 들보가 있는데 어찌하여 형제에게 말하기를 나로 네 눈 속에 있는 티를 빼게 하라 하겠느냐 외식하는 자여 먼저 네 눈 속에서 들보를 빼어라 그 후에야 밝히 보고 형제의 눈 속에서 티를 빼리라”
우리가 살아가면서 우리가 재판관의 자리에 올라갈 때가 많이 있는 거죠. 우리 자녀들을 보면서 부모님들이 재판관의 노릇을 할 때가 있는 겁니다. 같이 신앙생활하면서 신앙생활하는 우리 동료 성도들을 향해서 우리가 판단하는 일들을 하게 되는 것이죠. 우리가 직장 생활을 하면서 이 사회의 어떤 일들을 하면서 늘 우리들의 마음 가운데 무슨 일을 하고 있는가, 다른 사람들을 판단하고 비난하고 그리고 그 사람에 대해서 잘못된 말을 하는 망령된 증인과 같은 일들을 우리들이 할 때가 있는데, 예수님께서는 그런 우리를 향해서 무슨 말씀을 하고 있는가, 제발 그렇게 하지 마라. 왜냐하면 너희가 하는 바로 그 말대로 너희가 판단을 받을 것이다. 너희가 하는 그 말대로 너희가 심판을 받게 될 것이다. 경고하시면서 절대로 우리가 그런 악한 일을 할 것이 아니라고 말씀해 주고 있는 것이죠.
우리가 이 세상에서 하는 모든 말들은 우리는 그냥 아무런 생각이 없이 말을 내뱉고 있지만, 우리가 지금 이 세상에서 하는 모든 말들은 다 하나님의 심판대 앞에서 책망받을 수밖에 없다고 하는 것을 기억하셔야 합니다. 마태복음 12장 36절과 37절의 말씀에 “내가 너희에게 이르노니 사람이 무슨 무익한 말을 하든지 심판 날에 이에 대하여 심문을 받으리니 네 말로 의롭다 함을 받고 네 말로 정죄함을 받으리라” 말씀하고 있습니다. 그러니까 우리가 말을 조심하고 함부로 판단하지 말고 함부로 증언하지 말고 그래서 다른 사람들의 마음을 아프게 하는 일들을 하지 않을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 안타깝게도 우리 성도님들 가운데 많은 분들이 우리 청소년들을 바라보면서, 청년들을 보면서 이런 말 저런 말들을 막 하셔요. 그렇습니까? 찔립니까? 양심에 그러시는 분들이 많아요.
그런데 그 말이 무슨 말인가, 우리 청년들에게 우리 중고등부 아이들에게 우리 아이들에게 잘못된 판단을 주는 것이고 잘못된 그런 증언을 하게 되는 것이고, 그래서 그 사람들의 마음 가운데 정말 고통스러운 그런 말들을 우리들이 하게 될 텐데 그러한 것을 우리가 이해하지 못한 채 우리는 그냥 생각나는 대로 어쩌다가 한 번 봤으니까 할 말은 생각이 안 나고 무슨 말을 해야 될지는 모르겠고 말은 해야 되겠고 하니까 한다는 것이 꼭 그 사람의 마음을 아프게 하는 말을 꼭 내뱉어요. “너 왜 아직 시집을 안 가냐?”, “너 왜 아직 아기도 안 낳냐?”, “너 왜 아직 직장도 못 잡았냐?” 얼마나 그게 아파요. 그 판단으로 인해서 우리 자녀들이 마음이 아프고 우리 자녀들이 교회 못 나오겠대요. 우리 어른들이 자꾸 그런 말해서 나 이 교회 나오기 싫다고 그래요.
나는 아무 생각하지 않고 아는 척으로 이야기했지만, 그런데 우리 자녀들이 그렇게 고통스러운 마음 가운데 있는데 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 잘 새겨서 들어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 우리가 하는 그 판단의 말이, 우리가 그냥 무심코 내던졌던 그 말이 그 사람들을 판단하게 되고 마음 아프게 만들고 그래서 무너지게 만드는 그런 일들을 하게 된다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서, 우리가 나이 한 살 더 먹으면 더 먹을수록 입을 굳게 잘 닦고 해야 할 말은 어떤 말을 하면 좋을까요? “너 참 예쁘다.” 따라서 해봅시다. “너 참 예쁘다.”
“너 교회 나오는 거 너무나도 반갑다.” 그런 말을 해주세요. 하지 말아야 될 말 “너는 살 언제 빼니?”, “넌 직장 붙었니?”, “너 시험 본 거 합격했니?”, “아기는 왜 안 낳니?” 그런 말하지 말고 우리 자녀들이 믿음 생활 잘할 수 있도록 우리의 말 한마디 한마디가, 나는 무의식중에 던졌던 그 말이 사실은 그 사람을 판단하는 말이 되고 마음 아프게 하는 말이고, 그 사람의 정체성을 잘못된 기준으로 일방적으로 판단해서 마치 실패자처럼 느껴지게, 나는 아무런 가치가 없는 사람처럼 느껴지게 그렇게 판단하는 말이 되어서 우리 자녀들을 무너뜨리는 그건 너무나도 큰 말이 된다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 우리의 말들을 조심조심할 수 있는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 우리 자녀들이 잘 알아요. 내게 무엇이 부족하고 우리 젊은 성도들이 잘 알아요. 우리 자녀들에게 무엇이 부족하다는 거 너무나도 잘 알아요.
그래서 그거 고쳐보고 싶고 잘해보고 싶고 열심히 하고 싶은데 못해서 힘들고 못해서 고통스러운데 옆에서 한마디 더 건드려서 “너 왜 그거 못하니?”, “너 왜 그거 안 하고 있니?” 해서 무너뜨릴 것이 아니라, 그런 말들로써 그 사람들을 판단하고 정죄하는 것 같은 느낌을 주고 그래서 무너지게 만들 것이 아니라 우리가 우리의 입술에 파수꾼을 세워서 선하고 좋은 칭찬하고 격려하는 말, 따뜻한 말들을 하면서 우리 자녀들을 세울 수 있는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 바랍니다.
그래서 오늘 이 말씀은 무엇인가, 그런 잘못된 증인들, 잘못 판단하는 자들은 어떠할 것인가, 하나님의 채찍이 있을 거라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 우리가 경각심을 가져야 한다는 말씀이 첫 번째 의미이고 이 말씀의 두 번째 의미는 우리가 그런 말을 들었다고 한다면, 사람들이 나를 무시하는 말, 사람들이 나를 제대로 인정하지 않고 선입견에 따라서 우리를 판단하는 말을 나에게 해주었다고 한다면, 그런 말을 우리가 실제로 듣게 되었다고 한다면 우리는 어떻게 할 것인가? 오늘 이 잠언의 말씀을 보면서 아 그렇게 잘못 말하는 사람을 향한 하나님의 심판이 있을 거라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 우리가 절망할 것이 아니라 위로와 소망을 발견할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 때때로 우리는 살아가면서 우리를 향해서 조언으로 가장한 날카로운 이야기들을 들으면서 살 때가 많습니다.
저도 그렇게 하지 않으려고 정신을 바짝 차리지 않으면 저도 종종 그렇게 얘기해서 많은 사람들을 아프게 할 때가 많이 있는데요. 그런 이야기를 들을 때 우리는 어떻게 되는가 너무나도 마음이 아픈데, 그런데 그 아픈 말을 들었을 때 우리가 절망할 것이 아니라 하나님께서 결국 이런 사람들을 향해서 심판의 칼을 준비하고 계시다라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 위로를 얻어야 할 줄로 믿습니다. 하나님은 어떤 하나님이십니까? 정의로우신 하나님이신 거죠, 공의로우신 하나님인 겁니다.
우리 인생들은 조금만 바라보고 전체를 바라보지 못하고 그 일부분만을 바라보고 그 일부분에 대해서 비난하고 일부분을 보고 책망하는 게 우리 사람들의 연약함이지만 하나님은 어떤 하나님이신가, 모든 것을 다 바라보시며 우리 인생을 외모로 보시는 것이 아니라 우리의 심령의 깊숙한 곳까지 꿰뚫어 보시는 하나님, 사무엘상 16장 7절의 말씀에서 기록하고 있는 것처럼 “여호와께서 사무엘에게 이르시되 그의 용모와 키를 보지 말라 내가 이미 그를 버렸노라 내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라” 사람들은 내 전체의 모습 가운데서 하나만 보고 일부분만 보고 왜 그렇게 인생을 사느냐고 우리를 함부로 넘겨짚고 비난하게 되겠지만, 하나님은 그 하나만 보시는 것이 아니라 전체를 보시는 거예요. 그렇기 때문에 하나님께서 누구를 선택하셨는가? 다윗을 선택하신 거죠. 다윗은 어떤 사람이었습니까?
그 집안에 정말 막내와 같은 아이로서 그 어린 꼬마 아이가 양만 치고 다니는 그러한 모습을 보여줄 때 “저 아이는 내놓아서 어디에 쓰겠는가, 무슨 큰일을 하겠는가” 그저 양이나 치고 마는 그런 목동 정도로만 생각하고 있었지만, 하나님께서는 그 모습만 보신 것이 아니라 그 마음의 중심을 보시고 하나님의 마음에 합한 다윗의 모습을 보시면서 그 다윗을 선택해 주셨던 것처럼, 하나님은 이 세상 사람들이 우리를 바라보는 것과 다르게, 사람들은 우리의 키가 얼마냐 우리가 얼마나 잘생겼는가 우리가 얼마나 많은 돈을 가졌는가 우리가 얼마나 많은 업적을 누렸는가 그것을 바라보면서 우리를 평가하지만 하나님은 무엇을 바라보시는가 우리의 심령을 바라보신다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 위로와 평강을 누릴 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 예수님께서도 무슨 말씀을 해 주셨습니까? 요한복음 8장 15절의 말씀에 “너희는 육체를 따라 판단하나 나는 아무도 판단하지 아니하노라”
“나는 너희들처럼 그렇게 겉모습만 보고 판단하지 않는다.” 나는 사람들이 바라보는 것처럼 겉모습만 보고 판단하는 것이 아니라 우리 주님께서 우리의 중심을 바라보신다고 말씀해 주고 계시고, 하나님은 어떤 하나님이십니까? 은밀한 가운데 보시는 하나님, 사람들 앞에 굳이 내놓고 사람들한테 떠벌려야 그래야 인정하는 하나님이 아니라 하나님은 우리가 은밀한 가운데서 행한 그 선한 일도 바라보신다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 위로를 얻어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 우리는 천국의 소망을 가지고 삽니다. 우리가 마지막 날 천국에 가게 되면 어떤 일이 있을 것인가?
계시록 21장 3절에서 4절 말씀에 “내가 들으니 보좌에서 큰 음성이 나서 이르되 보라 하나님의 장막이 사람들과 함께 있으매 하나님이 그들과 함께 계시리니 그들은 하나님의 백성이 되고 하나님은 친히 그들과 함께 계셔서 모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아 주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라”
이 세상 사람들이 나를 인정해 주지 않아도, 하나님께서는 우리의 슬픔을 아시고 우리의 억울함을 아시고 마지막 날에 우리들의 눈에서 눈물을 닦아 주실 거라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서, 이 세상 살아가는 동안에 사람들이 우리를 무시하고 인정해 주지 않고 우리들을 그냥 하찮게 본다고 할지라도 거기에 우리가 시험 들고 주눅 들 것이 아니라 우리를 가장 소중하게 보시는 하나님, 우리를 가장 소중하게 보시기 때문에 그 아들을 십자가에 내어주시기까지 사랑하신 그 하나님, 그 하나님을 바라보며 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
The Weight of Judgment: Seeking Truth in a World of False Witnesses
In the world we live in, it is very important that righteous judgment takes place. It is only when righteous judgment occurs that we can live somewhat happily. To enjoy a happy life, we can only live so when all things proceed fairly and justly. If a person has done a good deed, it would be fair for that good person to receive a fitting reward; and if a person has done evil, it would be a fair society if a corresponding punishment is handed down for that evil deed. I believe that only in a world where such fairness is properly maintained can all people live their lives happily and well. Becoming such a fair world is, perhaps, a prerequisite for enjoying a happy life. But what kind of world do you think this actual world we live in is? What kind of things do you think happen often?
Regrettably, rather than righteous judgments being made, we often experience heartbreaking times as we see unfair things happening here and there. This does not happen only in a courtroom; rather, our entire lives can be said to be a kind of trial. In the fields of our lives, righteous judgments and proper evaluations should take place, but if those things do not happen well, it is very difficult and painful. Particularly in the relationship between our children and parents, children grow up listening to their parents’ evaluations. If parents look at their children well, evaluate them correctly, and properly acknowledge everything they have done, the children become excited. Our children can live happily and joyfully.
However, even if our children are trying hard to do something, if the parents are always scolding them, asking “Why are you like that?” or “Why do you act that way?” and giving such evaluations, once the children feel they are receiving an unfair evaluation, there is a high possibility they will head down a wrong or crooked path. Therefore, this kind of judgment does not occur only in a courtroom but in all areas of our lives. In every community and in every relationship with people—whether at a workplace, church, home, or in human relations—the issue of whether a person is properly acknowledged or not comes as a very significant problem. Currently, the Winter Olympics are underway. When we watch sports, there is much joy. What is the reason sports enjoy such popular popularity?
Perhaps it is because, even in this somewhat unfair world, the field of sports is a place where proper judgments are made. Who wins the gold medal? Regardless of whether that person came from a powerless country or an incredibly difficult environment, they are evaluated solely on their skill. When they display the world’s best performance to their heart’s content, and their sweat, tears, and toil are rewarded and evaluated through that gold medal, the athlete sheds tears of joy, and the countless people watching also rejoice and enjoy it together. However, even in the sports world, if an evaluation is wrong, anger arises, stress is felt, and many wrong emotions appear.
In many fields of this world, countless evaluations and judgments are being made. But where lies the reason that proper judgments are not being made? Perhaps one of the reasons is because of false witnesses. Today’s Proverbs 19:28 (ESV) records it this way: “A worthless witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.” What does it mean by a “worthless witness”? This word translated as “worthless” is Belial, which carries meanings like useless, valueless, or wicked. What kind of person is a truly wicked witness? It says a wicked witness is one who mocks justice. One who ridicules and sneers at justice is a wicked witness.
It says the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity; normally, when seeing something wrong, one should vomit it up. One should spit it out, saying it is inedible. But the mouth of the wicked devours even what is inedible, thereby distorting justice and showing a state of unconcern even if evil occurs. Why do these evil, worthless, and wicked witnesses mock justice and pervert judgment like this? It is because they do not fear God. If we fear God, we cannot do such a thing. If we know that the God of justice exists—if there is a God who exists and judges all things—then we cannot become false witnesses. We cannot say “right” to a wrong thing and “no” to a right thing.
However, many things are happening in this world where wrong judgments occur, calling evil “good” and good “evil,” thereby perverting justice. The reason such things happen is that people are convinced that God does not exist. Furthermore, not only do they not believe in God, but when money becomes our idol, such phenomena appear. For me, who is God? If God is my God, we cannot call an evil thing good. If God is truly my God, we cannot become false witnesses. But when money, not God, becomes an idol, many instances of lying for money, testifying falsely for money, and perverting justice occur. In fact, what is money? It has aspects similar to God.
In what way does money have aspects similar to God? Money has omnipotence. We know God is the Almighty God, but money also has a kind of omnipotence similar to God, so that if only one has money, there is nothing that cannot be done, and everything is achieved. Thus, money possesses an element that makes it feel like God to countless people. Therefore, if it is for one’s own benefit—as money dictates—and if one can gain much, it brings the regrettable result of joining in making this world unfair and evil through wrong and false testimonies. But what is it that we must clearly remember? Money and God may look similar, but money can never become God.
What is money? Unlike God, it is an entity that leads us to ruin. Ultimately, that money takes away our happiness, and if we start making that money an idol—while utilizing and using money appropriately is fine—if we consider it an idol and lie or do evil as money dictates, what will happen? Eventually, we head toward the path of destruction. Money does not give the promised happiness but instead results in making us more exhausted and pained. Therefore, I pray in the name of the Lord that we all may always faithfully serve God and stand on the holy and righteous path He desires. Regrettably, among those who call themselves Christians, many say they believe in God but actually serve money as an idol. And such people can be hidden within the church.
Rather than being deceived by such people, we must always listen to the word of truth, stand sincerely before God, and remember what He says to us as we move toward the path of holiness. But what does Proverbs 19:29 (ESV) say? “Condemnation is ready for scoffers, and beating for the backs of fools.” It says condemnation (judgment) is ready for scoffers. Who is the “scoffer” mentioned here? A scoffer is one who abandons justice. Verse 28 expresses that a worthless witness mocks justice. How does a worthless witness treat justice? They make light of it. They sneer at it. Therefore, the worthless witness becomes the scoffer (the arrogant one).
What is prepared for such scoffers and worthless witnesses—for false witnesses? Today’s word records that God’s judgment is prepared, and that beating is prepared for the backs of such fools. Ultimately, those who do not fear God and do evil, those who give false testimony—what will happen to them? We must remember the warning that they will be struck by God’s whip. Since it says they will be struck by a whip, is it okay to just take a few lashes? No, we must remember the fact that God’s whip is not just something you can take a few times; it is a whip that leads us completely to ruin. With a heart of fear, if I stand on the side of evil, if I become a false witness, if I head down the wrong path for money, what is waiting for us? God’s judgment is waiting.
Right now, money might roll in or a benefit might arise, but if we serve money as an idol and move toward falsehood, what happens? We must remember the fact that God’s eternal judgment and eternal whipping exist, inevitably leading us to ruin. We must have a sense of vigilance and stand in truth with a heart that fears God. In fact, we act as witnesses and judges; not only by going to a courtroom, but in our real lives, we live judging and testifying about others.
Therefore, although this word is explained as a word regarding a courtroom, we must live according to God’s will, meditating deeply on His word, as we are always judging and testifying something throughout our 24-hour lives. What did Jesus say? Matthew 7:1–5 (ESV) says: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
As we live, we often ascend to the seat of a judge. Parents sometimes play the role of a judge while looking at their children. We judge our fellow believers while practicing faith together. While at work and doing things in this society, what are we doing in our hearts? We sometimes act like worthless witnesses, judging and criticizing others and saying wrong things about them. Toward us, Jesus says: please do not do that. Because by the very words you speak, you will be judged. By the words you speak, you will be condemned. He warns that we must never do such evil.
All the words we speak in this world—though we utter them without much thought—we must remember that every word we speak will be rebuked before the judgment seat of God. Matthew 12:36–37 (ESV) says: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Therefore, I pray in the name of the Lord that we may be careful with our words, not judge or testify recklessly, and not do things that hurt the hearts of others. Regrettably, many among our members speak various words to our youth and young adults. Is that so? Do you feel pricked? Many do so in their conscience.
But what do those words mean? We give wrong judgments and false testimonies to our young adults and youth, and we speak words that are truly painful to their hearts, but without understanding that, we just speak whatever comes to mind. Because we see them once in a while, and we can’t think of what to say, and we don’t know what to say but feel we must say something, we inevitably utter words that hurt their hearts. “Why haven’t you married yet?”, “Why don’t you have a baby yet?”, “Why haven’t you found a job yet?” How painful is that. Because of that judgment, our children’s hearts ache, and they say they can’t come to church. They say they don’t want to come to this church because the adults keep saying such things.
I spoke as if I knew them without thinking, but our children are in such a state of pain. We must listen to and internalize the word of God. Remembering the fact that those words of judgment, those words we threw out carelessly, judge those people, hurt their hearts, and make them collapse, as we age, we must wipe our mouths well and ask: what kind of words should we speak? “You are truly beautiful.” Let’s repeat it. “You are truly beautiful.”
“I am so glad to see you come to church.” Please say such things. Things you shouldn’t say: “When are you going to lose weight?”, “Did you get a job?”, “Did you pass the exam?”, “Why aren’t you having a baby?” Don’t say those things, but so that our children can lead a good life of faith, remember that every single word—though I threw it out unconsciously—actually becomes a word that judges that person and hurts them. It unilaterally judges their identity by wrong standards, making them feel like a failure or a person of no value. Remembering that such words become immense words that destroy our children, I pray in the name of the Lord that we all may be careful with our words. Our children know well. Our young members know well what they lack. They know very well what our children are missing.
They want to fix it, do well, and try hard, but they are struggling and pained because they can’t. Rather than touching them once more from the side, asking “Why can’t you do that?” or “Why aren’t you doing that?” and destroying them, and rather than giving them the feeling of being judged and condemned and causing them to collapse, I hope we all can set a guard over our lips and build up our children by speaking good words of praise and encouragement, and warm words.
Therefore, what is this word today? The first meaning is that we must have a sense of vigilance, remembering the fact that there will be God’s whip for such false witnesses and wrong judges. The second meaning is: what will we do if we hear such words—if people speak words that ignore us or judge us based on prejudice without properly acknowledging us? Looking at this word of Proverbs today, I pray in the name of the Lord that we may find comfort and hope rather than despair, remembering that there will be God’s judgment toward those who speak wrongly. Sometimes as we live, we hear sharp stories disguised as advice.
If I don’t stay sharp, I also often speak like that and hurt many people. When we hear such stories, it is so painful, but when we hear those painful words, we must obtain comfort, remembering the fact that God is ultimately preparing the sword of judgment toward such people. What kind of God is He? He is the righteous God, the God of justice.
We humans look only at a little and cannot see the whole; we look at a part and criticize or rebuke it—that is our human weakness. But what kind of God is He? He is the God who looks at all things, who does not see our life by appearance but pierces into the deepest part of our spirit. As recorded in 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV): “But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.’” People will look at only one thing out of my entire image, look at only a part, and recklessly guess and criticize us, asking why we live our lives that way; but God does not look at only that one thing, He looks at the whole. That is why He chose whom? He chose David. What kind of person was David?
As the youngest in that family, when that little boy was just tending sheep, they thought, “Where can we put that child to use? What great work could he do?” They thought of him as only a shepherd boy who just tends sheep. But God did not look only at that appearance; He saw the center of his heart, and seeing David as a man after His own heart, He chose him. Just as God sees us differently from how people of this world see us—people evaluate us based on how tall we are, how handsome we are, how much money we have, or how many achievements we have—I pray in the name of the Lord that you may enjoy comfort and peace, remembering the fact that God looks at our spirit. What did Jesus also say? In John 8:15 (ESV): “You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.”
“I do not judge by looking only at the outward appearance as you do.” He is saying He does not judge by the outward appearance as people do, but that our Lord looks at our heart. And what kind of God is He? He is the God who sees in secret. He is not a God who acknowledges only when we put things out before people and boast, but we must obtain comfort, remembering the fact that God also looks at the good deeds we have done in secret. We live with the hope of heaven. When we go to heaven on the last day, what will happen?
Revelation 21:3–4 (ESV) says: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their god. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’”
Even if the people of this world do not acknowledge me, remembering the fact that God knows our sorrow and our sense of unfairness, and that He will wipe away every tear from our eyes on the last day—while living in this world, even if people ignore us, do not acknowledge us, and see us as insignificant—rather than being tested and intimidated, I pray in the name of the Lord that we all may be those who triumph by faith, looking to the God who sees us as most precious—who loved us so much that He gave His Son to the cross.
