김 씨 할아버지는 요즘 나이가 들면서 아내 때문에 걱정이 이만저만이 아니다. 아내의 귀가 자꾸 먹어가는 것처럼 느껴지기 때문이다. 하루는 집으로 들어오면서 아내에게 말했다. “여보, 나 왔어.” 하지만 아내는 아무것도 듣지 못한 듯 아무런 반응이 없었다. 저녁 식사 준비만 열심히 하는 것이었다. 그래서 물었다. “오늘 무슨 요리 하는 거야?” 하지만 여전히 아내는 아무런 대답을 하지 않는 것이었다. 할아버지는 정말 큰일이구나 싶었다. 이렇게 가까운 데서 말하는데도 할머니가 아무 소리를 듣지 못하는 상황에까지 온 것이구나 싶었다. 다시 다가가면서 물었다. “오늘 무슨 요리 해?” 하지만 여전히 대답이 없었다. 어깨를 툭 치며, 할아버지는 다시 물었다. “오늘 무슨 요리 하냐고?” 그러자 할머니가 뒤를 돌아보며 말했다.
“도대체 몇 번 대답해야 알아들어? 내가 맛있는 감자조림 만들어 준다고 몇 번이나 대답했는데, 왜 자꾸 물어보는 거야?” 누군가 만들어 낸 이야기인데, 재미있어서 한번 인용해 보았다. 상대방이 내 말귀를 못 알아듣는 것 같으면, 상대방의 귀가 먹었는지 걱정할 필요도 있겠지만, 내 귀가 먹은 것은 아닌지 한 번쯤 질문해 볼 필요가 있다.
여성에게 강도사가 되는 길을 허용하고, 더 나아가 안수하여 목사가 되는 길을 이제는 열어야 한다는 목소리에 대하여 반대하는 소리가 끊임없이 들린다. 그 가운데에는 “왜 시대의 조류를 따라가느냐”는 비판이 있다. 시대가 바뀌었다고 해서 진리를 버리면 안 된다고 비판한다.
그런데 여성에게 성직을 허용하는 것이 과연 진리에서 벗어나는 것일까? 여성에게 성직을 허용하는 것이 과연 시대의 조류를 따르는 것일까? 나는 앞에서 인용한 할아버지의 이야기를 그들에게 들려주고 싶다. 혹시 자기 자신이 시대의 조류를 따라서 여성의 사역을 막아온 것은 아닌지 질문해 보라고 말이다. 여성 안수 반대론자들은 자신들이 성경의 진리 위에 서 있다고 생각하지만, 사실은 ‘과거’라는 시대의 영향 속에서 여성을 차별하는 관점을 정당화해 왔을 뿐이다.
과거의 사람들이 성경을 더 잘 해석했을 것이라는 증거는 없다. 우리는 끊임없이 성경을 바르게 해석하기 위해서 노력해야 한다. 그러한 노력의 결과로 종교개혁이 이루어졌고, 노예를 해방시켰으며, 교회 안에서 새로운 찬양으로 영광을 돌릴 수 있게 되었고, 다양한 악기를 동원하여 하나님께 나아갈 수 있게 되었다. 한때 남녀가 다른 자리에 앉아 예배를 드려야 했었지만, 이제는 부부가 같이 앉아 예배를 드리는 것도 가능해졌다. 개혁주의 신앙의 근본은 성경만이 최고의 기준이라는 점이다. 그 어떤 것도 하나님의 말씀이라는 최고의 기준 아래에서 다시 재검토되어야 한다. 혹시 우리의 관습과 전통으로 하나님의 진리를 억누르고 있었던 것은 없는지 확인해야 한다. 그것이 바로 개혁주의다.
Mr. Kim has been deeply worried about his wife lately as he gets older. It feels as though her hearing is gradually fading away. One day, upon returning home, he said to his wife, “Honey, I’m home.” But his wife gave no reaction, as if she hadn’t heard a thing. She was simply focused on preparing dinner. So he asked, “What are you cooking today?” Still, she did not answer. The grandfather thought to himself, This is serious. He was struck by the realization that she had reached a point where she couldn’t hear him even from such a close distance. He stepped closer and asked again, “What are you cooking today?” Yet, there was no reply. Finally, tapping her on the shoulder, he asked once more, “I asked what you are cooking today!”
At that, the grandmother turned around and said, “How many times do I have to answer before you understand? I’ve told you several times now that I’m making delicious braised potatoes. Why do you keep asking?” This is a made-up story, but I quote it here because it is quite amusing. When it feels like someone else isn’t understanding what you are saying, you might need to worry about whether they are hard of hearing—but you should also consider whether it is actually you who has gone deaf.
Regarding the voices calling to allow women to become licensed preachers and, further, to open the path for them to be ordained as pastors, opposing arguments are constantly heard. Among them is the criticism: “Why are you following the trends of the times?” They argue that we must not abandon the truth just because the times have changed.
However, does allowing women to enter the ministry truly constitute a departure from the truth? Is it really just following the trends of the times? I want to tell those critics the story of the grandfather I just cited. I want to ask them to consider whether they themselves have been the ones following the “trends of the times” by blocking women’s ministry for so long. Opponents of women’s ordination believe they are standing on biblical truth, but in reality, they have merely been justifying a discriminatory perspective toward women under the influence of a past era.
There is no evidence that people of the past interpreted the Bible better than we do. We must constantly strive to interpret the Scriptures correctly. It was as a result of such efforts that the Reformation took place, slavery was abolished, we were able to bring glory to God through new songs in the church, and we could approach Him with various musical instruments. There was a time when men and women had to sit in separate sections during worship, but now it is possible for couples to sit together.
The foundation of the Reformed faith is that the Bible alone is the supreme standard. Everything must be re-examined under this highest standard of the Word of God. We must check whether we have been suppressing God’s truth with our own customs and traditions. That is exactly what it means to be Reformed.
