다윗이 오랜 피난 생활을 마치고 왕으로 올라간 이후에 제일 먼저 하려고 했던 일이 있었습니다. 그것은 바로 아비나답의 집에 있었던 하나님의 궤를 다윗 성으로 옮겨오는 것이었는데요. 다윗이 왕위에 올라가서 제일 먼저 생각해 낸 것이, 가장 먼저 하고 싶어 했던 것이 하나님의 언약궤를 가져오려고 했던 것이라고 하는 게 참 놀라운 일이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 다윗이 어떤 사람이었는가, 다윗이 무엇을 중요하게 생각했고 하나님을 어떻게 생각했는가를 보여주는 아주 상징적인 일이라고 생각이 듭니다. 다윗은 어떤 사람이었는가? 다윗은 하나님 중심의 삶을 살던 사람이었습니다. 하나님을 전적으로 신뢰했고 하나님의 말씀에 귀를 기울였고 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인가를 민감하게 생각하면서 하나님의 뜻에 따라 살려고 했던 사람이었기 때문에, 다윗이 왕이 되었을 때 제일 먼저 한 일이 무엇이었는가, 그것은 하나님의 궤를 가지고 오고 싶어 했다고 하는 게 오늘 우리가 살펴볼 말씀이라고 할 수가 있겠는데요.
이런 다윗의 이야기를 우리가 살펴보면서 늘 대조되는 한 사람을 생각해 볼 수가 있습니다. 누구를 생각해 볼 수가 있죠? 사울 왕을 생각해 볼 수가 있을 것입니다. 사울 왕은 어떠했는가? 사울 왕은 왕이 된 이후 그 자신의 통치 기간 동안 내내 이 하나님의 궤에 대해서는 전혀 생각해 보지 않았다고 하는 점을 우리가 새삼 느끼게 됩니다. 다윗이 왕이 되었을 때야 비로소 다윗은 하나님의 궤가 어디에 있는가, 저기 저 아비나답의 집에 있다고 하는 사실을 생각해 내었고 그 하나님의 궤를 가져오려고 했다고 하는 점, 이것이 아주 놀라운 일이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 사울 왕은 전혀 관심이 없었습니다. 사울 왕은 위기의 상황이 있을 때마다 하나님을 찾았지만 그때뿐이었던 것이죠.
그때 그 순간 위기를 모면하기 위해서 전쟁 앞에서 하나님이 필요해지면 그때 엎드리고 그때 찾아가려고는 했었지만, 그러나 다윗의 모습은 어떠했는가? 늘 하나님이 내게 무엇을 말하기를 원하시는가, 하나님의 뜻이 무엇인가를 늘 고민하면서 하나님 중심적으로 생각했던 사람이라고 하는 것을 생생하게 보여주는 일이 바로 이 하나님의 언약궤를 가져오려고 했던 것에서 찾아볼 수가 있겠습니다. 다윗은 어떤 사람이었는가? 하나님의 언약궤를 모셔오려고 하는 그런 계획을 세우게 되었는데요. 그 옛날 다윗이 골리앗을 무찌를 때에도 그가 그 상황 가운데서 하나님을 의지해서 승리할 수 있었던 것이 우연이 아니었던 것이죠. 늘 하나님 중심적인 생활을 하고 있었기 때문에 그런 상황에서도 하나님을 의지할 수 있었던 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 다윗이 사울 왕을 피해서 도망 다닐 때에도 절망하지 않고 그가 담대하게 살아갈 수 있었던 이유가 무엇이었겠습니까?
그것은 늘 하나님 중심적으로 생활을 했기 때문이라고 생각이 됩니다. 힘들고 어려운 상황 가운데서도 “여호와는 나의 목자”라고 하는 그 믿음이 있었기 때문에 사망의 음침한 골짜기와 같은 순간을 지낸다고 할지라도 담대하게 견딜 수 있는 힘이 그런 다윗에게 있었던 것이고, 다윗이 왕이 된 이후에도 이제는 교만해 버려서 자기 마음대로 살아간 것이 아니라 왕이 된 이후에도 제일 먼저 찾았던 것이 무엇이냐 하면 하나님의 언약궤를 가져오려고 했고 하나님 중심적으로 삶을 살려고 했던 것을 오늘 우리가 살펴볼 수가 있게 되었습니다. 지금 우리 다윗이 하나님의 언약궤를 가져오려고 했는데 이 언약궤가 지금 어디에 있는가? 아비나답이라고 하는 사람의 집에 놓여 있는 것이죠. 왜 거기에 있게 되었습니까? 그것은 바로 엘리 제사장 시절에 빼앗겨 버렸던 안타까운 사건이 있었기 때문이었습니다.
엘리 제사장 시절에 이스라엘 민족이 블레셋과 전쟁을 하는 가운데 이스라엘 사람들이 생각해 낸 것은 하나님의 도우심을 얻었으면 좋겠다고 해서 그 하나님의 언약궤를 전쟁터로 가지고 갔습니다. 하나님의 언약궤가 있다고 한다면 우리가 승리할 수 있지 않을까 생각했지만 하나님의 언약궤가 전혀 도움이 되지 않았습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 그들과 함께하지 않았기 때문인 것이죠. 그 옛날 이 언약궤를 가지고 가면서 요단강이 갈라지기도 했고, 언약궤를 가지고 가면서 여리고성이 무너지기도 했고 엄청난 힘을 발휘하기도 했었지만, 그러나 블레셋과의 전쟁터에서는 아무런 힘도 발휘할 수 없었는데, 그 이유는 언약궤 자체가 힘이 있었던 것이 아니라 하나님께서 함께하실 때, 하나님께서 이스라엘 민족과 함께하실 때 놀라운 역사가 일어난 것이었지 언약궤 자체에 힘이 있었던 것은 아니었기 때문이었습니다.
결국 이스라엘 백성들은 그 하나님의 언약궤를 블레셋 민족에게 빼앗겨 버렸고, 블레셋 민족들은 자기들이 이겼다고 잔치를 벌였지만 사실은 이긴 것이 아니라 다시 그 하나님의 언약궤 앞에서 다곤 신상이 무너지기도 하는 그런 재앙을 얻게 되는 그런 일들을 당하게 될 때, 그 하나님의 언약궤를 다시 유대 땅으로 돌려보내고자 해서 가다가 결국 아비나답의 집 가운데 모셔지게 되었던 이야기가 사무엘상의 말씀 가운데 기록되어 있습니다. 다윗은 이제 그 하나님의 언약궤를 다시 다윗 성으로 가져오게 되었는데요. 정말 최선을 다해서 이것이 온다고 하니까 다윗은 너무나도 기쁘고 너무나도 좋아서 최선을 다해서 이 언약궤를 모셔 오려고 했습니다. 그런데 어떻게 가져오게 되었는가? 사무엘하 6장 3절 말씀에 보면 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. **“그들이 하나님의 궤를 새 수레에 싣고 산에 있는 아비나답의 집에서 나오는데 아비나답의 아들 웃사와 아효가 그 새 수레를 모니라”**라고 기록하고 있습니다.
이 하나님의 궤를 모셔오려고 했을 때 어떻게 했는가? 새 수레를 새로 만들어서 새로운 수레에다가 그것을 싣고 모셔오게 되었는데, 아비나답의 아들 웃사와 아효가 그 앞을 인도하면서 가져오게 되었다고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 나름대로의 최선의 방법을 사용하게 된 것이죠. 하지만 오는 도중에 문제가 발생하고 말았습니다. 잘 오다가 소들이 무엇인가에 깜짝 놀라서 뛰는 일이 발생하게 되었는데, 결국 그 언약궤가 수레에서부터 떨어지는 그런 상황이 발생하게 된 것이죠. 아마 이 언약궤가 떨어져서 언약궤가 박살이 날 수도 있는 위급한 상황을 맞이하게 되었을 때, 그것을 호송해야 하는 책임을 지고 있었던 웃사라고 하는 사람이 다급한 마음에 언약궤를 보호하기 위해서 손을 댔다가 그 자리에서 즉사하는 사건이 발생하고 말았습니다. 그 상황을 사무엘하 6장 6절에서부터 8절 말씀 가운데 이렇게 표현하고 있습니다.
“그들이 나곤의 타작마당에 이르러서는 소들이 뜀으로 웃사가 손을 들어 하나님의 궤를 붙들었더니 여호와 하나님이 웃사가 잘못함으로 말미암아 진노하사 그를 그곳에서 치시니 그가 거기 하나님의 궤 곁에서 죽으니라 여호와께서 웃사를 치심으로 다윗이 분하여 그곳을 베레스웃사라 부르니 그 이름이 오늘까지 이르니라” 그렇게 표현하고 있습니다. 아마도 우리가 상상해 보자고 한다면 이 하나님의 언약궤가 수레에서 떨어질 때 그것을 보호하기 위해서 손을 내밀어서 좀 보호하려고 했던 웃사가 그 하나님의 언약궤에 깔려서 즉사한 것이 아닐까 추측해 볼 수가 있겠습니다. 이 하나님의 언약궤라고 하는 것의 사이즈가 어느 정도 되냐면 보통 시신을 우리가 운반하는 관과 비슷했을 거라고 생각이 되는데요.
관처럼 긴 것은 아니고 한 120cm 정도, 그리고 한 60cm, 60cm 정도 되는 그런 궤로 된 것이지만 나무로 만들었기 때문에 크게 무게가 안 나갈 수도 있겠지만 거기에다 금을 입혔고 그 위에 그룹(천사)들을 금으로 만들어 놓았기 때문에, 학자들의 의견에 따르면 대략 70kg 정도에서부터 많게는 200kg 정도의 무게가 될 거라고 생각하고 있으니까 아마도 무거운 그 하나님의 언약궤라고 한다면 웃사가 그것을 떨어지지 않게 막으려고 했다가 아마 거기에 깔려서 죽게 된 것이 아닐까, 그리고 그것을 사무엘하에서 표현하기를 하나님께서 웃사를 치셔서 그 자리에서 죽은 것이라고 설명한 것이 아닐까 상상해 볼 수가 있겠습니다. 아무튼 이렇게 이 언약궤를 운반하는 과정 가운데 재난이 발생하게 된 것이죠. 사람이 죽고 하는 이런 일들이 일어나게 되자 다윗은 그 자리에서 멈추고 말았습니다.
이 하나님의 언약궤를 가지고 오려고 했던 계획을 더 이상 진행하지 못하게 되었고, 그 하나님의 궤가 그래서 오벧에돔의 집에 머무르게 되었다고 하는 이야기가 오늘 우리가 읽은 하나님의 말씀의 내용입니다. 도대체 무엇이 문제였을까요? 왜 이런 끔찍한 사건이 일어난 이유가 어디에 있었다고 생각을 하십니까? 많은 사람들이 성경을 묵상하며 연구하면서 진단을 내리기를, 아마도 그것은 하나님께서 정하신 방법대로 하지 않았기 때문일 거라고 추측하곤 합니다. 하나님의 말씀에 의하면 이 언약궤를 운반할 때에는 아무렇게나 운반할 것이 아니라 레위인들이 어깨에 메어서 그 언약궤를 운반해야 되는 것이라고 성경에 분명하게 기록하고 있는데, 그런 하나님께서 정해놓으신 규정을 어기고 성경에 규정되어 있던 방식을 따르지 않고 자기들이 편한 대로 그냥 수레에 모셨기 때문이 아닐까라고 그렇게 분석하는 경우가 많이 있습니다.
특별히 역대상 15장 13절의 말씀에 보면 다윗이 다시 이 언약궤를 가져오는 이야기를 하면서 이렇게 이야기를 했습니다. “전에는 너희가 메지 아니하였으므로 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리를 찢으셨으니 이는 우리가 규례대로 그에게 구하지 아니하였음이니라” 하니 다윗은 이 문제를 다시 한번 생각해 보면서 예전에 왜 실패했을까, 왜 이런 끔찍한 일이 발생하게 되었을까 고민하며 연구해 본 결과가 무엇이냐면, 다윗의 생각에 우리가 하나님께서 정해놓으신 방법대로 하지 않았기 때문이 아닐까, 레위인들이 어깨에 메고 네 명에서 지고 옮기게 되어 있는데 그 규정을 위반해 버리고 그래서 수레에 끌고 왔기 때문이 아닐까, 그것을 잘못이라고 생각하고 두 번째 모시고 올 때, 오벧에돔의 집에서 가지고 올 때는 원래 하나님께서 정하신 방법대로 모시고 왔다고 하는 이야기가 기록되어 있습니다. 이 말씀을 우리가 분석하면서 결론 내리기를, 우리가 우리 방식대로가 아니라 하나님께서 하시는 말씀이 무엇인가에 귀를 기울여야 되고 우리가 원하는 방식이 아니라 하나님께서 우리에게 해주시는 말씀에 민감해야 된다고 하는 결론을 내리곤 합니다.
그런데 유진 피터슨 목사님은 또 이런 분석을 한 적이 있습니다. 그것은 바로 영적인 교만이 있었기 때문이 아니었겠는가라고 하는 분석인 것이죠. 웃사라고 하는 사람은 누구였습니까? 그 아비나답의 집의 아들로서 지금까지 계속 이 언약궤를 보관하고 관리해 오던 사람이었는데, 어느 순간에 그가 이 언약궤를 관리하고 보관하면서 교만함이 다가오기 시작했다고 하는 것이죠. 하나님 앞에 늘 겸손하면서 두려운 마음으로 서는 것이 아니라 어느 순간에 그 언약궤를 바라보면서 “내가 언약궤를 관리하는 사람이라, 내가 저 언약궤를 보호할 사람이다” 하면서 그의 마음 가운데 어느덧 익숙해져 버려서 교만해진 마음, 하나님 앞에서 하나님의 보호하심을 간구하며 엎드리는 모습이 아니라 너무나도 자주 익숙해져 버렸기 때문에 이제는 내가 하나님을 보호해야 된다고 하는 그런 교만한 마음 가운데 결국 언약궤에 함부로 손을 대어 버렸고, 그래서 겸손하지 못한 교만함이 이러한 재난을 불러일으켰다고 하는 분석을 하기도 합니다.
이런 재난이 발생하게 되었을 때 다윗은 어떻게 했습니까? 오늘 읽은 말씀 사무엘하 6장 9절과 10절 말씀에 보면 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. **“다윗이 그날에 여호와를 두려워하여 이르되 여호와의 궤가 어찌 내게로 오리요 하고 다윗이 여호와의 궤를 옮겨 다윗 성 자기에게로 메어가기를 즐겨하지 아니하고 가드 사람 오벧에돔의 집으로 메어 간지라”**라고 기록하고 있습니다. 그 순간에 모든 것이 멈춰버리고 말았다는 거죠. 다윗의 마음 가운데 제일 처음에 가지고 있었던 생각이 무엇입니까? 하나님의 언약궤를 우리 성으로 모셔오면 좋겠다, 그래서 하나님 앞에 예배하고 기도하고 하나님과 더 가까이 가는 삶을 살았으면 좋겠다고 하는 경건한 소망이 다윗의 마음에 있어서 언약궤를 가져오려고 했다가 중간에 재앙을 만나게 된 거예요.
그런 상황 앞에서 다윗의 마음 가운데 두려운 마음이 들었고, 이 하나님의 언약궤가 우리에게 축복일 줄 알았는데 오히려 재앙이 되어 버리고 저주가 되어 버린 것처럼 생각되는 그 순간에 두려운 마음에 언약궤를 가져오는 것을 포기해 버리고 말았다고 하는 게 오늘 우리가 살펴보고 주목해 보아야 할 부분입니다. 과연 이렇게 멈추어 버리는 것이 옳은 선택이라고 할 수 있을까요? 언약궤를 가져오려고 했던 그 마음은 선한 동기였는데 선한 동기 앞에 갑작스러운 재난이 있게 되었고 그 갑작스러운 재앙 앞에서 무너져 버렸던 것이죠. 그런데 이 순간에 우리가 가져야 될 바른 태도가 있다면 멈추는 것이 아니라 어디서 무엇이 잘못이었는가를 분석하고 하나님께 뜻을 구하고, “하나님 우리가 무엇을 고쳐야 합니까? 우리가 어떻게 해야 합니까?” 질문을 하면서 자신의 삶을 바꾸고 그 선한 일을 계속하는 것이 그것이 우리가 선택해야 될 바른 방향일 거라고 믿습니다.
안타깝게도 다윗은 그 자리에서 얼어버리고 만 것이죠. 중단해 버리고 만 것입니다. 언약궤가 축복인 줄 알았는데 재앙처럼 느껴지게 될 때 그냥 멈추어 버린 것입니다. 그런데 가만히 생각해 보세요. 언약궤가 재앙일까요? 전혀 그렇지 않습니다. 사무엘하 6장 11절 말씀에 보면 이렇게 기록합니다. “여호와의 궤가 가드 사람 오벧에돔의 집에 석 달을 있었는데 여호와께서 오벧에돔과 그의 온 집에 복을 주시니라.” 놀랍게도 그 하나님의 언약궤가 오벧에돔의 집에 모셔두게 되었는데, 그 석 달 있는 동안에 하나님께서 그 오벧에돔의 집에 복을 내리셨다고 하는 것이죠. 결국 나중에 다윗은 다시 시도했습니다. 우리가 무엇을 잘못했는가, “우리가 새 수레로 끌고 오는 것이 아니라 레위인들이 메고 와야 되는구나” 방법을 바꾸고 결국에는 그 언약궤를 다윗 성으로 가져오게 되었는데요.
여기서 우리가 얻을 수 있는 교훈 가운데 하나는, 우리가 선을 행하다가 재앙을 만날 수 있겠는데 그 재앙을 만나는 것이 우리가 멈추어야 할 이유가 아니라는 점입니다. 우리가 하나님을 사모하기 때문에 선한 시도, 믿음의 시도들을 우리들이 얼마나 많이 하는지 몰라요. 정말 많은 성도님이 하나님의 뜻대로 살고 싶어 하는 결단들을 가지고 믿음의 노력들을 하게 되는데요. 그런데 우리가 착각하는 것이 무엇이냐 하면, 우리가 선한 일을 하기로 결정을 하면 모든 일이 술술 잘 풀릴 거라고 오해하는 경우가 많이 있습니다. 하지만 그렇지 않아요. 언제 무슨 일이 일어나는가, 웃다가 죽는 것과 같은 그런 끔찍한 일들이 있게 되는 것이죠. 정말 우리가 견딜 수 없는 너무나도 황당한 일들이 우리 앞에 펼쳐지게 되는 것입니다.
그럴 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 되는가? 복병의 원인이 우리에게 있을 가능성이 있습니다. 선한 동기로 시작한 일이었지만 중간에 잘못된 방법을 사용했기 때문에 그런 문제가 일어날 수도 있겠고요. 때로는 내가 전혀 잘못하지 않았지만 여러 가지 문제가 생기는 경우도 충분히 생길 수가 있는 것이죠. 그럴 때 우리는 멈출 게 아니라는 거예요. 왜냐하면 그 언약궤 자체가 재앙이 아니라 그것은 축복이었고 은혜였고 행복이었는데, 갑자기 만나게 되는 그 재앙 때문에 우리의 마음이 무너져 버릴 것이 아니라는 사실입니다.
우리가 살아가는 동안에 행복할 줄만 알았는데 위기가 찾아오기도 하고, 주를 위해서 섬기겠다고 했는데 오히려 비아냥거리는 일들을 당하기도 합니다. 그럴 때 우리는 대부분 그 자리에서 멈추어 버리는 선택을 하곤 합니다. 하지만 재앙을 만날 때 절망할 것이 아니라 이것이 축복이라고 하는 것을 바라볼 수 있는 믿음의 눈이 필요할 줄로 믿습니다. 하나님의 언약궤가 함부로 손을 댔을 때는 재앙처럼 보였지만, 오벧에돔의 집에 있을 때에는 그 가정에게 복이 임했고 하나님의 은총이 임했던 거예요. 우리가 재앙과 같은 상황을 만났을 때 포기해 버릴 것이 아니라 우리 자신을 다시 한번 살펴보면서 문제의 원인이 어디 있는가를 살펴보아야 할 것이고, 하나님 앞에서 내가 회개할 것은 무엇이 있는지 살펴보면서 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하신 뜻을 진실하게 지속해 나가는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
사실 그게 하나님께서 우리를 대하신 방법이었습니다. 하나님께서 우리를 창조하시고 이 세상에 내어놓으셨을 때 우리는 하나님의 뜻에 따라 행복하게 살기를 원하셨습니다. 하지만 우리는 잘못된 길로 갔고 죄악을 범하였고 저주스러운 모습으로 바뀌어 버린 것이죠. 하지만 하나님께서 우리를 보시면서 포기해 버리신 것이 아니라, 우리를 살리시기 위해서 하나밖에 없는 아들을 십자가에 내어 주셨습니다. 그리고 우리를 회복시켜 주신 거죠. 어쩌면 우리들의 마음 가운데 모든 것이 힘들어서 답답할 때가 있을 겁니다. 정말 나에게 행복을 줘야 될 우리 자녀들이 우리를 속 썩일 때가 있을 것입니다. 때로는 내가 주를 위해서 힘을 쓰겠다고 했는데 오히려 그것이 내게 고통스럽게 느껴질 때가 있을 것입니다. 하지만 그 순간에 포기해 버리는 것이 아니라 선한 일에 더욱 힘쓰는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 축원합니다.
Beyond the Disaster: Finding Blessing in the Midst of Fear
There was a task that David wanted to perform above all else after ascending to the throne following his long years as a fugitive. It was the task of bringing the Ark of God, which had been at the house of Abinadab, into the City of David. It is truly remarkable that the very first thing David thought of and desired to do upon becoming king was to bring back the Ark of the Covenant. I believe this is a highly symbolic act that shows what kind of person David was, what he valued most, and how he regarded God. What kind of person was David? David was a man who lived a God-centered life. Because he was a man who trusted God entirely, listened to His Word, and was sensitive to God’s will—striving to live according to it—the first thing he wanted to do as king was to bring the Ark of God.
As we examine this story of David, we can always think of one person in contrast. Who comes to mind? We can think of King Saul. How was King Saul? We realize anew that during his entire reign, King Saul never once gave thought to the Ark of God. It was only when David became king that he considered where the Ark was—at the house of Abinadab—and sought to bring it back; this is a truly marvelous thing. King Saul had no interest in it. Saul sought God whenever there was a crisis, but it was only for that moment.
Saul prostrated himself and sought God before battles just to escape a crisis when he needed Him, but how was David? The act of bringing the Ark vividly shows that David was a person who thought God-centrally, constantly agonizing over what God wanted to say to him and what God’s will was. What kind of person was David? He established a plan to bring the Ark of the Covenant. Back when David defeated Goliath, it was no accident that he was able to gain victory by relying on God in that situation. Because he always lived a God-centered life, he was able to rely on God even in those circumstances. What was the reason he could live boldly without despairing even when he was fleeing from King Saul?
I believe it was because he always lived a God-centered life. Because he had the faith that “The LORD is my shepherd” even in difficult and arduous situations, David had the strength to boldly endure even moments that felt like the valley of the shadow of death. Even after becoming king, he did not become proud and live as he pleased; rather, the first thing he sought after becoming king was to bring the Ark of God and live a God-centered life. David sought to bring the Ark, but where is this Ark now? It is placed in the house of a man named Abinadab. Why did it end up there? It was because of a sorrowful incident during the time of Eli the priest where the Ark had been captured.
During the time of Eli, while the Israelites were at war with the Philistines, they thought it would be good to obtain God’s help, so they took the Ark of the Covenant to the battlefield. They thought they might gain victory if the Ark was present, but the Ark of the Covenant was of no help at all. This was because God was not with them. In the past, when the Ark was carried, the Jordan River parted, and when it was carried, the walls of Jericho collapsed, exerting enormous power. However, on the battlefield against the Philistines, it exerted no power at all. This was because the power did not reside in the Ark itself, but was a marvelous work that happened when God was with the people of Israel; the Ark itself possessed no inherent power.
Eventually, the Israelites lost the Ark of God to the Philistines. The Philistines threw a feast thinking they had won, but they had not actually won; rather, they faced disasters, such as the idol of Dagon collapsing before the Ark. When they sought to send the Ark back to the land of Judah, it eventually came to be housed in the home of Abinadab, an account recorded in 1 Samuel. David now went to bring that Ark of God back to the City of David. Since it was coming, David was so joyful and happy that he did his best to bring it with the utmost sincerity. But how was it brought? 2 Samuel 6:3 (ESV) records it this way: “And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart.”
How did they bring the Ark of God? They made a brand-new cart, loaded the Ark onto it, and brought it, with Abinadab’s sons, Uzzah and Ahio, leading the way. They used what they thought was the best method. However, a problem occurred on the way. As they were coming along, the oxen were startled by something and began to jump, and eventually, a situation arose where the Ark was about to fall from the cart. Perhaps seeing an urgent situation where the Ark might fall and be shattered, Uzzah, who held the responsibility of escorting it, reached out his hand in haste to protect the Ark, but an incident occurred where he died instantly on the spot. This situation is described in 2 Samuel 6:6–8 (ESV):
“And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. And David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day.”
If we were to imagine the scene, we might speculate that as the Ark was falling, Uzzah reached out to protect it and was perhaps crushed by the Ark, dying instantly. The size of this Ark of God is thought to have been similar to a coffin used for carrying a body.
While not as long as a coffin, it was about 120cm long, 60cm wide, and 60cm high. Since it was made of wood, it might not have been extremely heavy, but because it was overlaid with gold and had cherubim (angels) made of gold on top, scholars estimate the weight to be anywhere from 70kg to as much as 200kg. Thus, it is possible that as Uzzah tried to stop the heavy Ark from falling, he was crushed by it and died; and 2 Samuel explains this by saying God struck Uzzah and he died there. Regardless, a disaster occurred during the process of transporting the Ark. When such an event happened where a person died, David stopped right there.
The plan to bring the Ark was halted, and the story tells us that the Ark remained at the house of Obed-edom. What on earth was the problem? What do you think was the reason for this terrible incident? Many people, while meditating on and researching the Bible, conclude that it was likely because they did not follow the method prescribed by God. According to God’s Word, the Ark was not to be transported haphazardly; the Bible clearly records that the Levites were to carry the Ark on their shoulders. Many analyze that the error was violating the regulations God had set and not following the method prescribed in the scriptures, but rather doing what was convenient for them by placing it on a cart.
Particularly in 1 Chronicles 15:13 (ESV), while recounting the story of David bringing the Ark again, it says: “Because you did not carry it the first time, the LORD our God broke out against us, because we did not seek him according to the rule.” After reconsidering why the previous attempt failed and why such a terrible thing happened, David concluded that it was because they did not follow the method God had set. The Levites were supposed to carry it on their shoulders—four men carrying it—but they violated that regulation and pulled it on a cart. Regarding that as the error, when they brought it the second time from the house of Obed-edom, it is recorded that they brought it according to the method originally set by God. Analyzing this word, we often conclude that we must listen to what God says rather than following our own way, and we must be sensitive to the words God gives us rather than our preferred methods.
However, Pastor Eugene Peterson once offered a different analysis. He suggested that it might have been due to spiritual pride. Who was Uzzah? As a son of Abinadab’s house, he was the one who had been keeping and managing the Ark all this time. The analysis suggests that at some point, while managing and keeping the Ark, pride began to creep in. Instead of standing before God with constant humility and fear, he looked at the Ark and thought, “I am the one who manages the Ark, I am the one who protects the Ark.” Because he had become so accustomed to it, his heart grew proud; instead of prostrating himself and seeking God’s protection, he felt that because he was so familiar with it, he now had to protect God. This proud heart led him to touch the Ark carelessly, and this lack of humility brought about the disaster.
What did David do when this disaster occurred? 2 Samuel 6:9–10 (ESV) records: “And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and he said, ‘How can the ark of the LORD come to me?’ So David was not willing to take the ark of the LORD into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.” Everything came to a halt at that moment. What was the very first thought David had? He had a pious desire that it would be good to bring the Ark to his city to worship, pray, and live closer to God; but while trying to bring the Ark, he encountered a disaster.
In that situation, fear entered David’s heart. He thought the Ark would be a blessing, but in the moment it seemed to have become a disaster and a curse, he gave up on bringing the Ark out of fear. This is the part we must examine and pay attention to today. Is such a stopping the right choice? The heart that sought to bring the Ark had a good motive, but a sudden disaster struck that good motive, and he collapsed before that sudden calamity. However, the right attitude we should have in such a moment is not to stop, but to analyze where and what went wrong, to seek God’s will, and to ask, “God, what must we fix? What must we do?” I believe the right direction we should choose is to change our lives and continue that good work.
Regrettably, David froze on the spot. He simply ceased. When the Ark, which he thought was a blessing, felt like a disaster, he just stopped. But think about it for a moment. Is the Ark a disaster? Not at all. 2 Samuel 6:11 (ESV) records: “And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his household.” Remarkably, while the Ark was housed at Obed-edom’s home, during those three months, God poured out blessings upon his household. Eventually, David tried again. Changing his method—realizing, “We must not pull it with a new cart, but the Levites must carry it”—he finally brought the Ark into the City of David.
One of the lessons we can gain here is that while we may encounter disasters while doing good, encountering such a disaster is not a reason to stop. Because we long for God, we make so many good attempts and attempts of faith. So many believers make efforts of faith with resolutions to live according to God’s will. However, we often mistakenly think that once we decide to do something good, everything will go smoothly and easily. But that is not the case. Terrible things, like someone dying while laughing, can happen. Situations so baffling that we can hardly endure them unfold before us.
What should we do then? It is possible that the cause of the ambush lies within us. A work started with a good motive might encounter problems because a wrong method was used midway. At other times, even if we have done nothing wrong, various problems can certainly arise. In those times, we must not stop. This is because the Ark itself was not a disaster but a blessing, grace, and happiness; we must not let our hearts be crushed by a disaster we suddenly encounter.
While we live, crises find us when we thought we would only be happy, and we might face sarcasm even when we seek to serve the Lord. In those times, we mostly choose to stop right there. However, I believe we need eyes of faith that can see the blessing even when we encounter disaster, rather than despairing. When the Ark was touched carelessly, it looked like a disaster, but while it was at Obed-edom’s house, blessing and God’s grace came upon that family. When we encounter a disaster-like situation, we must not give up but examine ourselves once more to see where the cause of the problem lies. We must see what we need to repent of before God and become those who faithfully persist in God’s good and pleasing will.
In fact, that was how God treated us. When God created us and placed us in this world, He wanted us to live happily according to His will. However, we went the wrong way, committed sin, and turned into something cursed. Yet, God did not give up as He looked at us; to save us, He gave His only Son to the cross. And He restored us. Perhaps there are times when your heart feels stifled because everything is difficult. There will be times when our children, who should give us happiness, cause us heartache. At times, even when we try to exert ourselves for the Lord, it might feel painful. However, I pray that we all may be those who exert ourselves even more in good works in those moments, rather than giving up.
