서로 다른 허비 (마 26:6-10)
당근마켓을 사용하고 계십니까? 아, 몇 년 전부터 알게 되어서 저도 잘 사용하고 있는데요. 참 좋은 플랫폼이라고 생각이 듭니다. 내게는 필요가 없는데 다른 사람에게는 소중하게 사용될 수 있는 것이 되기 때문에 그것 때문에 거래가 가능한 것 같습니다. 어쩌면 모든 거래가 그런 것이라고 할 수가 있겠는데, 사람들에게는 무엇이 더 중요하고 무엇이 덜 소중한가가 있는 것이고 그러한 가치관의 차이가 이런 거래에서 드러나게 되어 있습니다. 우리가 잘 아는 야곱과 에서의 유명한 거래가 있습니다. 에서는 장자의 명분을 별로 중요하게 생각하지 않았습니다. 배고플 때 장자의 명분이 무슨 소용이 있겠나 하면서 그냥 하찮게 여기게 되었던 것이고요. 그래서 팥죽 한 그릇에 그 장자의 명분을 넘겨줘 버렸고, 야곱은 그 장자의 명분이 너무나도 소중하기 때문에 그것을 얻기 위해서 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 자기의 것으로 만들어 버리려고 했던 것이죠.
오늘 본문의 이야기는 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박히시기 바로 직전에 있었던 한 이야기를 기록하고 있습니다. 한 여인이 주님께 나와서 가장 값비싼 향유 하나를 예수님 앞에 아낌없이 쏟은 이야기입니다. 이 향유의 값이 300데나리온이라고 하는데, 300데나리온이라고 하면 1년 치 연봉에 해당하는 금액이라고 하니까 어마어마한 금액이라고 할 수가 있겠는데요. 어떻게 이 값비싼 향유를 예수님에게 그냥 부어버릴 수 있었겠는가, 어쩌면 그 당시 사람들도 도무지 이해할 수 없어서 그래서 분노하는 겁니다. 제자들이 분노하는 것이죠. 어째서 이 향유를 가치 없이 이렇게 허비해 버리느냐라고 분노하기까지 했던 것이죠. 하지만 이것이 어떻게 이 여인에게 가능했었을까요? 그것은 이 여인에게 있어서 예수님이 너무나도 소중했기 때문에 그렇습니다.
주님께서 사랑해 주신 그 사랑과 은혜를 생각하면 너무나도 감사해서, 나와 같은 죄인을 사랑하셔서 은혜를 베풀어 주신 주님을 생각하면 이 세상의 그 어느 것도 아깝지 않기 때문에, 주님을 위해서라고 한다면 이 세상에 주님보다 더 소중한 것은 없기 때문에 그 어느 것도 아깝지 않게 생각하고 주님께 드릴 수가 있었던 것입니다. 놀랍게도 예수님께서는 이 여인의 이 헌신과 마음을 예수님께서 받으셨어요. 제자들이 분노하는 그 모습을 보면서 너희들이 옳다 말씀하신 것이 아닙니다. 물론 가난한 자를 돕는 것이 의미가 없다고 하는 것이 아닙니다. 시급하지 않다고 하는 의미가 아닙니다. 하지만 이 여인의 모습을 보시면서 주님께서 아주 소중하게 여기셨는데, 그것은 금액이 커서 소중하게 여긴 것이 아니라 이 여인의 마음을 받으신 것이고, 어쩌면 이것이 신앙의 근본적인 모습을 드러내는 것이기 때문이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다.
그래서 예수님께서는 이 여인의 그 모습을 인정하시면서 아주 좋게 해석해 주셨는데, 이 여인이 행한 것은 무엇인가, 나의 장례를 위해서 부은 것이다. 이 여인이 정말 예수님께서 돌아가실 것을 알고 그랬을까요? 그렇지 않았을 것 같아요. 이 여인은 그저 예수님이 너무나도 고마워서 예수님을 향해서 어떻게 감사의 마음을 표현할까, 어떻게 사랑의 마음을 표현할까 하는 그런 마음으로 주님 앞에 드린 것이었는데, 예수님께서는 이 여인이 행한 일이 바로 나의 죽음을 준비하기 위한 것이라고 해석하시고 그 여인의 행위를 칭찬하셨을 뿐만 아니라, 오늘 본문에서 읽지 않았지만 예수님께서는 권면하시기를 이 여인이 행한 일을 복음이 전파될 때마다 이 여인이 행한 일도 알려주어서 그래서 나를 기념하라, 이 여인이 행한 일을 알리라고 말씀하시면서 이 여인의 행위를 칭찬해 주셨습니다. 왜냐하면 신앙의 모습이 바로 이 여인의 행한 모습에 들어 있기 때문에 그런 것이죠.
그런데 이 여인이 행한 일 바로 다음에 마태복음을 보면 또 한 사람의 행위가 기록되어 있습니다. 그 사람의 이야기는 누구냐 하면 바로 가룟 유다의 이야기입니다. 가룟 유다는 예수님을 넘겨주기로 서로 약속하고 은 삼십을 받기로 결정하게 된 것이죠. 가룟 유다는 왜 예수님을 팔아버렸을까요? 왜냐하면 이 가룟 유다의 마음 가운데 더 소중한 것이 돈이었기 때문에 그래요. 예수님보다 돈이 더 소중하고 돈이 더 가치 있기 때문에 생명의 주를 얻는 것보다 돈을 얻는 것이 훨씬 더 중요하기 때문에 예수님을 팔아버리고 만 것이죠. 얼마나 어리석은 일인지 모르겠습니다. 주님을 얻기보다는 주님을 내던지고 이 세상에 썩어질 것들, 돈이라고 하는 것이 무엇인가요? 우리에게 유익을 주는 것 같지만 금세 없어져 버리는 것이고, 우리에게 생명을 주지 못하는 것을 얻기 위해서 생명의 주를 팔아버리는 어리석은 선택을 했던 것인데, 이 두 사람의 모습이 완벽하게 대비되는 것이죠.
한 여인은 주님이 가장 소중하기 때문에 그 값비싼 향유도 쏟아부을 수 있었던 반면에, 이 가룟 유다라고 하는 사람은 돈을 얻기 위해서 은 삼십을 얻기 위해서 예수님을 팔아버리는 완벽한 대조의 모습을 보이고 있는데, 오늘 우리들의 모습이 이 두 사람 가운데서 누구를 더 많이 닮아 있습니까? 오늘 우리 모두가 예수님을 위해서 향유를 부은 이 여인의 모습을 더 닮을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 하지만 안타깝게도 수많은 사람들이 주님을 섬긴다고 말하고 주님이 가장 소중하다고 말하면서, 그런데 어느 순간 주님이 아니라 이 세상에 썩어질 우상들이 더 소중하게 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 결정적인 순간에 나오는 것이죠. 언제 그렇습니까? 내 자존심이 망가지는 것 같은 순간에 다른 모든 것들은 다 내팽개쳐 버리고, 내 자존심이 너무나도 소중해서 시험에 드는 거예요. 어느 순간에 그 얄팍한 돈 때문에 내 양심을 팔아버리게 되는 거죠. 사람들에게 인정받는 것이 소중해서 믿음을 잃어버리게 되는 것이요.
때로는 우리 가족이 너무나도 소중해서 시험에 들어서 떨어지는 경우가 얼마나 많이 있는지 모릅니다. 평상시에는 예수님을 잘 믿는 것 같아요. 하지만 어느 순간에 주님께서는 우리의 믿음을 테스트하실 때가 있는 것이죠. 어느 날 아브라함을 향해서 하나님께서 말씀하시는 것입니다. 아브라함아 너는 네 아들 네 독자 이삭을 내게 바칠 수 있느냐를 물으시는 것입니다. 그런 질문들이 우리들에게 우리의 가장 중요한 것처럼 여기는 것을 향해서 주님께서 물으실 때가 있는 거예요. 예수님께서는 젊은 관원을 향해서 너는 네가 가진 모든 것을 다 팔아버리고 너는 나를 따르라고 할 때, 그 젊은 관원은 그 재산 때문에 주님을 따르지 못하게 되는 것이고, 때로는 주님께서 우리를 향해서 물으시는 것입니다.
예수님의 말씀에 아버지나 어머니를 나보다 더 사랑하는 자는 내게 합당하지 않고, 아들이나 딸을 나보다 더 사랑하는 자는 내게 합당하지 않다고 말씀하고 계시는데, 우리가 신앙생활 하다 보면 아들딸이 더 소중해서 믿음에서 떨어지는 사람들이 얼마나 많은지 몰라요. 나를 인정하지 않기 때문에 자존심 때문에 나를 인정하지 않는 것 때문에 너무나도 괴로워서 믿음에서 떨어지는 경우가 얼마나 많이 있는지 모릅니다. 오늘 이번 고난 주간을 맞이하면서 나의 모습이 과연 이 여인의 모습을 닮아가고 있는가, 아니면 조그마한 나의 이익을 위해서, 나의 조그마한 그 세상에 가치 없는 것들을 위해서 예수님을 모른다고 하고 팔아버리고 있지는 않은지 되돌아보며 우리의 마음 가운데 주님, 주님이 가장 소중하기를 소원합니다. 주님을 더욱 사랑하기를 소원합니다. 기도하며 나아가는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
예수님께서는 밭에 감추인 보화의 비유를 말씀하시면서 천국이 무엇과 같은가, 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같다고 했습니다. 그 보화를 얻기 위해서, 그 보화를 발견한 사람은 이 세상에 그 어느 것도 귀하지 않은 거예요. 집에 가서 모든 것을 다 팔아버립니다. 그 밭을 얻기 위해서라고 한다면 냉장고 팔고 집 팔고 모든 거 다 팔아서 그래서 그 밭을 사기 위해서 모든 것을 다 처분해 버리는 것이 다른 사람들이 볼 때는 미쳤다고 말할 겁니다. 저 쓸모없는 땅을 왜 사려고 저렇게 모든 것을 다 처분하는가 세상 사람들이 보기에는 아무 가치 없는 것 같은 것을 얻기 위해서 왜 저렇게 노력하는가 이야기할 것입니다. 하지만 밭을 발견한 사람, 그 속에 보화가 있는 것을 발견한 사람은 모든 것을 팔면서도 행복한 거야. 내가 주님과 함께할 수 있다고 한다면, 저 천국을 얻기 위해서라고 한다면 이 세상에 그 모든 것이 아무런 가치가 없고 오직 주님만이 소중하다.
주님만이 나의 참 소망이라고 하는 사실을 발견하며 주님 앞에 나아가는 것이 그게 바로 천국을 발견한 자의 그 기쁨이요, 소망이라고 하는 사실이라고 하는 것을 기억하면서 예수님이 가장 좋기 때문에 향유를 과감하게 부을 수 있는 이 여인의 믿음처럼 오늘 우리 모두가 주님 앞에 온전히 설 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 어쩌면 우리들의 손, 우리들의 마음은 우리들의 손과 같습니다. 우리들의 손에 무엇인가를 쥐고 있으면 다른 것을 얻을 수가 없어요. 이것을 들고 있으면 다른 것을 받을 수가 없는 것이죠. 더 좋은 것을 받기 위해서는 이것을 내려놔야, 손에서 내려놔야 더 좋은 것을 얻을 수가 있는 것과 마찬가지로 우리의 마음이라고 하는 것이 무엇인가, 우리의 마음에 예수님을 가장 소중한 주님으로 모시기 위해서는 우리들의 마음에 차지하고 있던 세상에 가치 없는 그 모든 것들을 다 주님 앞에 내어놓고 다 부어버리고 주님을 우리들의 마음 가운데 모시는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
놀라운 것은 예수님께서는 우리를 얻기 위해서 자신의 목숨을 내어놓으셨습니다. 주님께서는 우리를 얻기 위해서 예수님을 내어놓으신 것이죠. 예수님께서 십자가 위에서 “나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까” 할 때 그 주님의 부르짖음을 외면해 버리시고, 예수님을 내어버리고 저와 여러분들을 살리시기 위해, 우리를 저 영원한 지옥 불 가운데서 건져내시기 위해서 주님께서 예수님을 내어놓으시고 우리를 구원해 주신 그 놀라운 하나님의 은혜, 오늘도 기억하며 우리들의 삶 가운데서 주님과 함께 동행하는 것이 가장 큰 행복이요 기쁨이라고 하는 사실을 늘 묵상하며 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
What is Most Precious? Choosing Christ Over the Idols of the World
Do you use Carrot Market? I learned about it a few years ago and use it well myself. I think it’s a wonderful platform. Transactions are possible because something I no longer need might be something precious to someone else. In a sense, all transactions are like that; they reveal what people value more and what they value less. There is the famous transaction between Jacob and Esau that we know well. Esau did not think much of his birthright. He considered it trivial, asking what use a birthright was when he was starving. So, he handed it over for a single bowl of red stew. Jacob, however, considered that birthright so precious that he was willing to use any means necessary to make it his own.
Today’s text records a story that took place just before Jesus was crucified. A woman came to the Lord and unreservedly poured out a jar of the most expensive ointment before Him. The value of this ointment was said to be 300 denarii, which is an enormous amount equivalent to a year’s salary for a laborer. The people of that time could not understand how she could simply pour out such expensive ointment on Jesus, and they became angry. The disciples were indignant, asking why this ointment was wasted so pointlessly. But how was this possible for this woman? It was because Jesus was so precious to her.
When she thought of the love and grace the Lord had shown her, she was overwhelmed with gratitude. Thinking of the Lord who loved a sinner like her and bestowed grace upon her, nothing in this world seemed too costly. Because there was nothing more precious than the Lord, she could give it to Him without regret. Surprisingly, Jesus accepted this woman’s devotion and her heart. He did not tell the indignant disciples that they were right. This does not mean that helping the poor is meaningless or that it isn’t urgent. However, the Lord regarded this woman’s act as very precious—not because the amount was large, but because He received her heart. It reveals the fundamental nature of faith.
Jesus acknowledged her and interpreted her action beautifully: she had poured it to prepare Him for burial. Did this woman really know that Jesus was going to die? Probably not. She simply loved Jesus so much and wanted to express her gratitude and love. Yet, Jesus interpreted her act as preparation for His death. Not only did He praise her, but as we see in the verses following today’s reading, He commanded that wherever the gospel is proclaimed, what she had done should also be told in memory of her. He praised her because the very essence of faith is contained in her actions.
Immediately following the story of this woman, Matthew records the actions of another person: Judas Iscariot. Judas decided to hand Jesus over and agreed to receive thirty pieces of silver. Why did Judas sell Jesus? It was because, in Judas’s heart, money was more precious. Because money was more valuable to him than Jesus, and obtaining silver was more important than obtaining the Lord of Life, he sold Him. What a foolish thing to do. Instead of gaining the Lord, he cast Him aside for the perishing things of this world. What is money? It seems to benefit us, but it disappears quickly. He made the foolish choice of selling the Lord of Life to obtain something that cannot give life. These two individuals present a perfect contrast.
While one woman could pour out expensive ointment because the Lord was most precious, Judas Iscariot sold Jesus to gain thirty pieces of silver. Which of these two do we resemble more today? I pray in the name of the Lord that we all may resemble the woman who poured the ointment for Jesus. Unfortunately, many people claim to serve the Lord and say He is most precious, yet there are moments when the perishing idols of this world feel more valuable. This comes out at critical moments. When does it happen? In a moment where our pride feels damaged, we might throw everything else away because our pride is too precious. At some point, we might sell our conscience for a pittance. We might lose our faith because being recognized by people is so important.
Sometimes, we fall into temptation because our family is so precious that it comes before God. Usually, it seems like we believe in Jesus well. However, there are moments when the Lord tests our faith. One day, God spoke to Abraham: “Abraham, can you offer your son, your only son Isaac, to me?” The Lord sometimes asks us questions regarding the things we consider most important. When Jesus told the rich young ruler to sell everything he had and follow Him, that young man could not follow because of his possessions. Sometimes the Lord asks us the same.
Jesus said that whoever loves father or mother more than Him is not worthy of Him, and whoever loves son or daughter more than Him is not worthy of Him. As we lead our lives of faith, it is tragic how many people fall away because their children are more precious than God. Or they fall away because they are so distressed by a lack of recognition from others or wounded pride. As we welcome this Passion Week, let us look back: does my life resemble this woman? Or am I denying and selling Jesus for my own small interests and the worthless things of this world? I pray in the name of the Lord that we move forward praying, “Lord, I desire for You to be most precious. I desire to love You more.”
Jesus told the parable of the treasure hidden in a field, saying the kingdom of heaven is like that treasure. For the person who finds it, nothing else in this world remains precious. They go and sell everything they have. To others, selling the refrigerator, the house, and everything else to buy a seemingly useless field would look like madness. Worldly people would ask why someone would make such an effort for something of no value. However, the person who discovered the treasure in that field is happy even while selling everything. “If I can be with the Lord, if I can gain that kingdom of heaven, everything in this world has no value; only the Lord is precious.”
Remembering that the joy and hope of one who has found the kingdom of heaven is the realization that Jesus is the true hope, I pray in the name of the Lord that we stand firmly before Him, possessing the faith of this woman who boldly poured the ointment because Jesus was the best. In a way, our hands are like our hearts. If you are holding something in your hands, you cannot grasp anything else. If you are holding this, you cannot receive that. Just as you must put something down to receive something better, we must lay down the worthless things of the world that occupied our hearts and pour them out before the Lord to welcome Him as the most precious Master of our lives.
The marvelous thing is that Jesus gave His own life to gain us. The Lord gave up Himself to win us. When Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” the Father turned away from the Son’s cry to save you and me. To rescue us from the eternal fires of hell, the Lord gave up Jesus and saved us. Today, remembering that amazing grace of God, let us meditate on the fact that walking with the Lord is our greatest happiness and joy. I pray in the name of the Lord that we all triumph in faith.
