강도의 소굴 (마 21:12-17)

고난 주간 한 주간을 맞이해서 예수님께서 마지막 한 주간 동안 하셨던 일들을 하나씩 하나씩 그날그날 어떤 일이 있었는지 헤아려 보면서, 살펴보면서 은혜를 받으려고 하는데요. 월요일에 예수님께서 하신 행적이 무엇이냐 하면 성전에 들어가셔서, 예루살렘 성전에 들어가셔서 그곳에서 장사하는 사람들, 그곳에서 돈 바꾸어 주는 사람들의 상을 뒤엎으시면서 주님께서 성전을 청결하게 하신 사건이 월요일에 있었던 사건입니다. 바로 그 전날 주일에는 어떤 일이 있었죠? 호산나 찬송 가운데 예수님께서 승리의 입성을 하신 일이 종려주일 때 있었던 일입니다. 나귀를 타고 예수님께서 예루살렘 성으로 들어가시는 그 장면은 마치 왕으로서 등극하는 장면과 같습니다.

개선장군이 한 성에 들어가는 것과 같은 그런 장면으로 만왕의 왕이신 예수님께서 예루살렘 성에 들어가는 그 일을 하셨는데, 그 왕으로서 예루살렘에 들어가셔서 제일 먼저 한 일이 무엇이냐 하면 성전에 들어가셔서 장사하는 자들을 내쫓으신 일이었습니다. 예수님께서 이런 일을 하신 이유가 무엇이겠습니까? 그것은 바로 장사하는 사람들이 그곳에서, 돈을 바꾸어 주는 사람들이 성전을 더럽히고 있었기 때문인 것이죠. 성전을 장사하는 사람들의 소굴로, 장사 도둑들의, 강도들의 소굴로 만들었기 때문입니다. 성전이라고 하는 곳이 어떤 곳입니까? 성전은 무엇을 위해서 존재하는 곳입니까? 대답 한번 해 보십시오. 성전이 뭐 하는 곳이죠? 예배하는 곳이에요. 성전이 어떤 곳이죠? 하나님을 만나는 곳이에요.

그곳에서 하나님을 만남으로 말미암아 지었던 죄가 용서받고, 하나님 앞에 기도하면서 하나님의 응답을 체험하고, 하나님 앞에 나아가서 부족한 것을 채움 받는 그런 하나님을 만나는 장소가 성전이라고 할 수가 있는 것이죠. 그래서 성전에서 어떤 일이 일어났습니까? 성전에 가서 하나님 앞에 기도할 때 하나님의 응답을 받았어요. 누가 그렇게 받았습니까? 한나가 성막에 가서, 하나님의 성소에 가서 기도하는 가운데 하나님 앞에 울부짖는 가운데 하나님의 응답을 받고 사무엘이라고 하는 아이를 얻게 되는 놀라운 기적을 체험하게 된 것이죠. 성전에서 무슨 일이 있었습니까? 다윗이 성전에 가서 양식을 얻고 채움을 얻는 그런 일들이 있었던 것이죠. 백성들이 주님 앞에 나아가서 그곳에서 죄의 용서함을 받는 그런 기적들이 있던 곳이 성전이라고 할 수 있었을 텐데, 예수님 당시에 성전은 어떤 모습이었는가? 그곳을 누가 차지하고 있었는가? 장사치들이 차지하고 있었다고 하는 것이 그 당시의 현실이었습니다.

그런데 그 명분이라고 하는 것은 얼마나 그럴듯합니까? 장사하는 사람들이 그곳에 진 치고 있는데 명분이 무엇이냐 하면 제사를 돕겠다는 거예요. 힘들고 어려운 사람들이 와서 제사를 잘 드릴 수 있도록 소를 팔고 양을 팔고 비둘기를 팔고, 거기서 제사를 돕겠다고 하는 그럴듯한 명분이 있는 겁니다. 뿐만 아니라 동전을 바꾸어 주는 사람들은 성전세, 모든 성도라고 한다면 의무적으로 내야 하는 그 성전세가 있는데 그 성전세를 잘 내게 만드는 것을 돕기 위한 명분으로 거기에 돈 바꿔 주는 사람들이 그렇게 진 치고 있었다고 하는 것이죠. 아주 멋진 포장을 하고 있었지만 누구를 속일 수는 없습니까? 하나님의 눈을 속일 수는 없는 것이죠. 사람들의 심령을 꿰뚫어 보시는 그 하나님을 속일 수 없는, 거기에 강도의 무리들이, 장사치들이 진 치고 있을 때 그 모습을 보신 예수님께서 성전을 깨끗하게 하신 것이 월요일에 있었던 성전 청결의 사건입니다.

문제는 그 사람들 때문에 하나님 앞에 나아가는 것이 방해를 받게 된다는 것이죠. 그 장사하는 사람들이 진 치고 있던 곳이 어떤 곳이냐 하면 예루살렘 성전 가운데서도 ‘이방인의 뜰’이라고 알려진 곳에 장사치들이 진 치고 있는 겁니다. 당시에는 성전에 지성소가 있어서 그 지성소에는 대제사장만이 들어갈 수 있었고, 성소에는 제사장들만이 들어갈 수 있었고, 그 주변에는 유대인 남자들만, 그 옆으로는 유대인 여자들만 들어갈 수 있었고, 그리고 그 밖에는 이방인들도 와서 예배할 수 있는 이방인의 뜰이라고 하는 곳이 있었는데, 바로 그 이방인의 뜰이라는 곳에 장사치들이 다 진 치고 있어서 정작 하나님 앞에 나와야 할 사람들이 그곳에 가지 못하고, 이방인들이 하나님 앞에 나오는 것을 방해하는 곳으로 삼아 버리고 말았다는 것이죠.

그래서 예수님께서는 거룩한 분노로 거기에 진 치고 있던 사람들을 뒤엎어 버림으로 말미암아, 그들이 하나님께 나아가는 것을 방해하고 있었기 때문에 참되게 예배하는 사람들을 막아 버리고 하나님을 진실로 찾는 사람들을 막아 버려서 하나님 앞에 갈 수 없게 만들어 버린 것이죠. 가난한 사람들은 하나님 앞에 나가고 싶어도 그들이 만들어 놓은 규정들 때문에, 하나님 앞에 나아가려고 하면 이 정도의 소는 바쳐야 된다, 이 정도의 양은 바쳐야 된다고 하는 규정들 때문에 그들이 하나님 앞에 나아갈 수 없는 아이러니가 있었기 때문에 그들 때문에 하나님 앞에 나아가지 못하는 일들이 있었던 것이죠. 제사를 돕기 위한 목적을 가지고 있었는데 사실은 제사를 방해하고 하나님을 만나는 것을 방해하는 일들이 그곳에 있었는데, 예수님께서 그곳을 뒤집어 버리시면서 이곳이 어떤 곳이 되어야 되는가, 어떠한 집이라 불려야 되는가… 어떠한 집입니까? **“기도하는 집”**이 되어야 된다.

기도하는 집이라고 하는 말의 의미가 무엇입니까? 사람들이 하나님을 만나는 집이에요. 그곳에 가서 하나님을 만나고 하나님을 체험하고 하나님의 은혜를 받는 곳으로 바뀌기를 원하는 마음으로 그것을 뒤집어 버리신 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 오늘 우리가 이 이야기를 묵상하면서 2,000년 전의 이야기가 2,000년 전에만 있었던 이야기가 아니라 사실은 지금 오늘날 우리들 가운데서도 일어나고 있는 것은 아닌지 우리 자신을 돌아보아야 합니다. 왜냐하면 우리들 때문에 하나님 앞에 나아가지 못하는 사람들이 있을 수 있기 때문인 것이죠. 우리 주변에 수많은 사람들이 이야기를 합니다. “나는 예수님을 좋아하는데, 나는 예수님은 좋은데 사람들 보기 싫어서 교회 가기 싫다”는 사람들의 이야기 들어 보셨습니까? 많이 들어 봤어요. 아무개 목사 때문에, 아무개 장로 때문에, 저런 권사들 때문에 나는 교회 가기 싫다, 저런 인간들 때문에 나는 교회 가기 싫다는 이야기들을 우리들이 듣고 있을 때가 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다.

그래서 오늘 저와 여러분들이 예수님의 채찍을 바라보아야 합니다. 이 고난 주간에 오늘 우리 자신의 모습을 바라보면서 우리가 바로 그 **“강도의 소굴”**을 만든 사람이 아닌가… 더 높은 지위에 올라가면 올라갈수록, 더욱 중요한 직분을 맡을수록, 내가 장로가 되고 내가 목사가 되고 내가 총회 임원이 되고 더 중요한 일을 맡으면 맡을수록 오히려 주님의 이름을 더 더럽히고 주님께 나아가는 길을 더 막아 버리고, 더 영향력이 있을수록 더 주님께 가는 길을 막아 버리고 있는 사람들이 바로 나 자신은 아닌지… 나 때문에 사람들이 믿음을 잃어버리고 나 때문에 사람들이 이제는 더 이상 교회에 가지 않겠다고 하는 그런 모습을 우리가 보이고 있지는 않은지, 오늘 우리 자신을 살펴보면서 주님의 채찍을 바라보며 만일 우리가 그러한 모습을 조금이라도 보였다고 한다면 오늘 이 아침에 회개하며 엎드리는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

우리는 어떻게 강도의 굴혈을 만듭니까? 우리가 강도의 굴혈을 만드는 것은 아주 간단합니다. 우리가 이 성전에 와 있는 이유가 무엇인가가 우리를 강도로 만드는가, 성도로 만드는가의 차이를 만듭니다. 우리가 그곳에 와서 하나님을 예배하는 자로 선다고 한다면 성도가 될 것입니다. 하지만 지금 이 사람들은 무엇 때문에 성전에 와 있습니까? 하나님을 만나는 장소에서 하나님을 만나기 위해서 이곳에 와 있는 것이 아니라 이 사람들의 목적은 돈을 버는 게 목적인 거예요. 하나님의 이름을 이용해서 돈을 벌고, 하나님의 이름을 이용해서 내가 성공하고, 내가 사람들로부터 많은 이 세상의 탐욕, 썩어질 것을 채우기 위해서 그 성전에 가 있는 동안 그곳은 하나님을 예배하는 장소가 아니라 강도의 굴혈이 되어 버리고 마는 것이죠. 어쩌면 오늘 우리들의 삶에서도 그런 모습들이 얼마나 자주 일어나는지 모릅니다.

내가 하나님께 예배하기 위해서 이곳에 있는 것이 아니라 사람들로부터 박수받기 위해서, 사람들로부터 인정받기 위해서, 이곳에서 사람들이 인정해 주고 칭찬하는 것이 우리의 동기가 되어 버릴 때 결국 우리들은 사람들에게 가지 못하게 만드는 그런 강도의 모습들을 하고 있는 게 우리의 모습으로 변해 버린 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그래서 오늘 이 아침에, 고난의 주간에 한번 우리 자신을 돌아보면서 내가 과연 하나님을 진실로 섬기고 있는 것인지 아니면 사람들이 인정해 주는 그 인정을 원하고 있는지, 사람들의 박수 소리를 갈망하고 있는지, 이 세상의 욕심 탐욕을 우리가 추구하고 있는 것인지, 나의 하나님이 나의 하나님인지 아니면 이 세상에 썩어질 것이 나의 목표가 되어 있고 그것이 나의 우상인지 살펴보면서 회개하며 주 앞에 엎드리는 이 시간이 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Barriers to the Holy: Are We Blocking the Way to God?

As we welcome Holy Week, I want us to receive grace by reflecting on the works of Jesus during His final week, examining what happened day by day. On Monday, Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem and overturned the tables of the money-changers and those selling goods, an event known as the Cleansing of the Temple. Just the day before, on Sunday, what happened? It was Palm Sunday, when Jesus made His triumphal entry amidst shouts of “Hosanna.” That scene of Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey was like the coronation of a king.

Like a victorious general entering a city, Jesus, the King of kings, entered Jerusalem. And the very first thing He did as King was to go into the temple and drive out those who were buying and selling. Why did Jesus do this? It was because the merchants and money-changers were defiling the temple. They had turned the temple into a den of merchants—a den of thieves and robbers. What kind of place is the temple? For what purpose does the temple exist? Try to answer. What do people do in the temple? It is a place for worship. What kind of place is it? It is where we meet God.

By meeting God there, sins are forgiven; by praying before Him, we experience His answers; by coming before Him, our deficiencies are filled. The temple is the meeting place with God. So, what happened in the temple? When people went to the temple to pray, they received God’s answers. Who received such an answer? Hannah went to the tabernacle, to the sanctuary of God, and while crying out in prayer, she experienced a wonderful miracle as God answered her and gave her a child named Samuel. What else happened in the temple? David went to the temple and was fed and replenished. The temple was a place where the people came before the Lord to receive the miracle of the forgiveness of sins. But what did the temple look like in the days of Jesus? Who was occupying it? The reality at that time was that merchants had taken it over.

Yet, how plausible were their excuses? The justification for these merchants being stationed there was that they were “helping” the sacrificial system. They claimed to be helping the poor and weary perform their sacrifices properly by selling oxen, sheep, and pigeons right there. Furthermore, the money-changers were stationed there under the pretext of helping people pay the temple tax, which was mandatory for every believer. They were wrapped in such fine packaging, but who could they not deceive? They could not deceive the eyes of God. They could not deceive the God who pierces through the human spirit. When Jesus saw the crowds of robbers and merchants entrenched there, He cleansed the temple. This is the event of Monday.

The problem is that because of those people, coming before God was hindered. The place where these merchants were entrenched was a part of the Jerusalem temple known as the “Court of the Gentiles.” At that time, there was the Most Holy Place, where only the High Priest could enter; the Holy Place, where only the priests could enter; then an area for Jewish men, and next to it, an area for Jewish women. Finally, on the outside, there was the Court of the Gentiles, where even non-Jews could come to worship. But the merchants had occupied this very Court of the Gentiles, so the people who truly needed to come before God could not go there. They turned it into a place that hindered the Gentiles from approaching God.

Thus, out of holy anger, Jesus overturned their tables. Because they were obstructing people from approaching God, they were blocking true worshippers and those sincerely seeking the Lord. Even if the poor wanted to go before God, they couldn’t because of the regulations these people had created—rules stating that one must offer an ox or a sheep of a certain “standard.” The irony was that they could not reach God because of the very people who claimed to be helping them. Their stated goal was to assist in the sacrifice, but in reality, they were hindering the sacrifice and the meeting with God. Jesus overturned that place and declared what kind of house this should be, what kind of house it should be called… what house is it? It must be a “house of prayer.”

What is the meaning of a “house of prayer”? It is a house where people meet God. Jesus overturned the tables because He desired for that place to change back into a location where people meet God, experience Him, and receive His grace. As we meditate on this story today, we must reflect on whether this story from 2,000 years ago is happening among us today. This is because there may be people who cannot come before God because of us. We hear many people around us say, “I like Jesus, but I don’t want to go to church because I hate seeing the people there.” Have you heard this? I have heard it many times. “I don’t want to go because of that pastor, that elder, or those deaconesses.” We hear people say they don’t want to go to church because of “those kinds of people.”

Therefore, today you and I must look at Jesus’ whip. Looking at ourselves during this Holy Week, are we the ones who have made a “den of robbers”? The higher the position we attain, the more important the office we hold—whether I am an elder, a pastor, or a church official—the more we might be defiling the Lord’s name and blocking the path to Him. Could it be that the more influence I have, the more I am blocking the way? We must examine if people are losing their faith because of me, or if people are vowing never to go to church again because of my actions. Looking at the Lord’s whip and reflecting on ourselves today, if we have shown even a hint of such a 모습 (appearance/behavior), I pray in the name of the Lord that we all become those who prostrate ourselves in repentance this morning.

How do we create a den of robbers? It is very simple. The difference between being a “robber” or a “saint” depends on the reason we are at the temple. If we stand there as those who worship God, we are saints. But why are these people at the temple? They aren’t there to meet God in the place designated for meeting Him; their purpose is to make money. When we use the name of God to make money, use His name for our own success, or go to the temple to satisfy worldly greed and perishing things, that place ceases to be a place of worship and becomes a den of robbers. Perhaps such things happen quite often in our own lives.

If I am here not to worship God, but to receive applause and recognition from people—when being acknowledged and praised becomes our motive—then we have turned into “robbers” who prevent others from reaching God. Therefore, on this morning of Holy Week, let us look at ourselves. Are we truly serving God, or are we desiring the recognition of men? Are we longing for the sound of applause? Are we pursuing the greed and lusts of this world? Is my God truly my God, or is the perishing stuff of this world my goal and my idol? I pray in the name of the Lord that this would be a time of examining ourselves, repenting, and prostrating before the Lord.
