7일 천하(왕상16:15-20)
오늘 우리는 이스라엘 북쪽 이스라엘의 다섯 번째 왕이라고 할 수 있는 시므리의 이야기를 간단하게 살펴보려고 합니다. 북쪽 이스라엘의 왕들의 이름들을 우리가 지금 몇 번씩 반복해서 복습을 했었는데요. 기억이 나실까요? 안 나죠? 어쩌겠습니까? 알 수가 없습니다. 첫 번째 왕은 여로보암, 여로보암의 아들인 나답. 그런데 그 나답을 죽이고 두 번째 왕조가 시작되어서 세 번째 왕이 생겼는데 바아사, 그리고 그 아들 엘라. 대단합니다. 다 기억하고 계시는 분이 계십니다. 그런데 오늘은 그 엘라를 죽인 시므리의 이야기를 살펴보게 되었습니다. 세 번째 왕조를 만든 사람이 시므리라고 하겠는데, 이 시므리는 왕이 된 다음에 7일 만에 죽임을 당하게 되는 ‘7일 천하’로 끝나고 만 것이죠. 가장 짧은 기간 동안 왕위에 있었던 사람이 시므리라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 어쩌면 쿠데타를 일으켜서 집권을 했지만 엄격하게 말하면 쿠데타를 제대로 성공하지 못한 것이라고 할 수가 있겠죠.
7일 만에 그 의도가, 그 반역이 실패로 끝나버린 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 지난 시간에 살펴본 것처럼 시므리 씨는 왕이 되기 위해서 바아사 왕의 아들 엘라 왕을 죽이고서 자기가 이렇게 왕이 된 것인데요. 시므리는 원래 엘라 왕 밑에 있었던 군 지휘관이었습니다. 전체 군 사령관이 아니라 부대의 병거, 부대의 반절 정도를 지휘하는 여러 지휘관 가운데 한 사람이었는데요. 이 시므리가 반역을 일으켜서 엘라 왕을 죽이고 스스로 왕의 자리까지 올라갔는데 그 소식이 어떤 사람에게 들렸는가? 바로 그 엘라 왕의 다른 군 사령관이라고 할 수 있는 오므리… 이름이 시므리, 오므리 아주 비슷한 이름인데요. 오므리라고 하는 사람에게 이 시므리가 반역을 일으키고 쿠데타를 일으키고 왕이 되었다고 하는 소식이 오므리에게까지 전달이 된 겁니다. 대단하죠. 그때 휴대폰이 있었겠습니까? 유튜브가 있었겠습니까?
아무것도 없는 상태에서 지금 반역이 일어났다, 쿠데타가 일어났다고 하는 소식이 전파되어서 저 멀리 전장에 서 있었던 군 사령관이 그 소식을 듣고 회군해서 돌아와 시므리가 다스리고 있던 그 디르사라고 하는 그 성을 둘러쌈으로 말미암아, 이 시므리가 “아 이게 안 되겠구나” 자신이 지금 반역을 일으켜서 왕이 되기로 했지만 이 정권이 그대로 계속 오래갈 수 있는 것이 아니라 자신이 계속할 수 없다고 하는 사실을 깨닫고, 안 되겠다 싶어서 스스로 왕궁 요새에 들어가 불을 지르고 자결을 해버려서 7일 만에 그 왕권이 끝나게 된 왕이 바로 시므리라고 하겠습니다. 이 이야기를 살펴보면서 우리는 한 가지 질문을 던져볼 수가 있는 것이죠. 물론 역사의 가정을 할 수가 없겠지만 한 가지 질문을 던져볼 수가 있다고 한다면, 만일 시므리가 쿠데타를 일으키지 않았었더라면 시므리의 인생이 어떻게 끝났을 것인가라고 하는 질문입니다.
만일 시므리가 반역을 일으키지 않았다고 한다면 시므리는 어떤 삶을 살 수 있었을까요? 그냥 편안하게 살다가 군 지휘관으로서 잘 지내다가 편안하게 죽음을 맞이하고, 그의 자녀들도 편안하게 살면서 아마 편안한 삶을 잘 살 수 있었을 것이라고 추측해 볼 수가 있습니다. 하지만 바아사 왕의 아들 엘라 왕 그 밑에서 유력한 실권자로서 영원한 부와 권력을 누리면서 잘 살 수 있었던 그 사람의 마음 가운데 욕심이 생기게 된 겁니다. 보니까 엘라 왕을 죽이고 자기가 정권을 잡으면 잡을 것 같거든요. “내가 한 번 쿠데타를 일으키면 이스라엘 나라가 내 것이 되겠다. 내가 한 번 우리 병사들과 함께 잘 쿠데타를 일으키면 평생 잘 먹고살겠다.”
성공하면 영웅이 되는 것이고 반역하면, 실패하면 죄수가 되는 것인데 내가 평안히 영원히 왕이 될 수 있을 것이라는 생각으로 쿠데타를 일으킨 결과 어떻게 되었는가? 결국 왕의 자리로 올라가는 것 같았고 성공한 것 같았지만, 결국 7일 만에 죽임을 당하게 되는 인생을 망치게 되는 그런 안타까운 결과를 가져왔다고 하는 점을 오늘 우리가 생각해 볼 필요가 있겠습니다.
이 시므리가 반역을 일으키면서 그의 마음 가운데 이 쿠데타가 성공하려면 어떻게 해야 될 것인가… 그 시므리가 어떻게 했습니까? 모든 바아사의 식구들을 다 죽였다 그랬습니다. 바아사 왕조의 그 남자들, 벽에 오줌 누는 그 사람들을 다 죽여서 그 가정 가운데는 단 한 명의 고엘도, 단 한 명의 구원자, 단 한 명의 피의 복수자들을 남겨놓지 않고 그 식구 전체를 멸문지화를 해버리면서 다 죽여버리게 될 때 아무도 내 쿠데타를 뒤집을 수 있는 사람이 없을 것이라고 계산하고 그렇게 성공을 해낸 것만 같았습니다. 그런데 계산에 넣지 않은 것이 무엇입니까? 오므리를 다스려야 한다는 걸 계산에 넣지 못한 거죠. 백성의 마음을 얻어야 한다고 하는 것을 계산에 넣지 않은 것이죠.
사실 한 가지, 몇 가지만 성공하면 되는 것이 아니라 생각해야 될 것이 너무나도 많이 있는데 그 모든 것들을 다 방치해 둔 채 그저 원수들만 죽인다고 한다면 내가 성공할 것이라 생각했는데 그 모든 것들이 다 실패로 돌아가게 된 것이라 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그래서 오늘 우리가 생각해 볼 것이 있다면, 어떻게 이 시므리는 망하게 되었는가, 어떻게 이 시므리는 7일 천하로 끝났는가? 쿠데타를 하지 않았더라면 영원히 그런대로 잘 살 수 있었던 시므리의 인생이 왜 마지막에 이렇게 파국을 당하게 되었는가… 그 원인이 어디에 있다고 생각하십니까? 시므리의 욕심에 있었다, 결론을 내릴 수가 있겠습니다. 우리의 마음에 욕심이 생기면 어떻게 해야 됩니까? 성경의 가르침 야고보서 1장 15절의 말씀에 기록하기를 “욕심이 잉태한즉 죄를 낳고 죄가 장성한즉 사망을 낳느니라” 그거예요. 아주 간단해요.
너무나도 확실한 가르침이에요. 시므리의 마음 가운데 욕심이 잉태되기 시작했습니다. 그런데 그 욕심이 무엇이냐, 죄를 낳는 것이고 죄가 장성하면 사망을 낳는다고 했는데 결국 시므리는 욕심 가운데서 결국 쿠데타를 일으켰다가 결국 망하게 된 인생이 되었다 할 것입니다. 그래서 오늘 우리가 교훈을 얻어야 할 것이 있다면 우리의 마음 가운데 욕심을 다스릴 필요가 있겠고, 우리가 자족하는 마음, 적은 것에 만족하고 감사하는 마음, 하나님께서 내게 주신 그 자리, 하나님께서 내게 허락하신 것들에 대하여 감사와 찬송으로 자족하는 마음을 갖는 것이 정말 중요한 우리 성도들의 덕목이라는 것을 기억할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 디모데전서 6장 6절에서부터 8절 말씀에 이렇게 기록합니다. “그러나 자족하는 마음이 있으면 경건은 큰 이익이 되느니라 우리가 세상에 아무것도 가지고 온 것이 없으매 또한 아무것도 가지고 가지 못하리니 우리가 먹을 것과 입을 것이 있은즉 족한 줄로 알 것이니라”
아멘. 성도님들 우리 먹을 것 있으세요? 대답이 시원치 않습니까? 오늘 아침에 먹고들 오셨잖아요. 입을 거 있습니까? 입고 오셨잖아요. 좋은 옷을 입고 오셨어요. 그러면 감사할 줄 알아야 돼요. 자족할 줄 알아야 돼요. “하나님이 나에게 많은 것을 허락해 주셨구나, 하나님이 내게 엄청난 것을 허락해 주셨구나”를 알고 감사할 필요가 있는 거예요. 오해하지 마십시오. 그러니까 우리가 더 나은 삶을 위해서 노력하는 것이 잘못되었다고 말씀드리는 게 결코 아닙니다.
우리가 당연히 우리에게 다섯 달란트가 있으면 다섯 달란트를 잘 활용해서 다섯 달란트를 남겨야 되는 것이고, 두 달란트가 있으면 두 달란트를 남기는 것이고, 하나님께서 우리에게 은사를 주셨다고 한다면 썩여 놓을 것이 아니라 그냥 묻어둘 것이 아니라 더 나은 것을 얻기 위하여, 그리고 선을 베풀기 위하여, 하나님의 나라의 일을 하기 위하여 우리가 충분히 모든 일들을 다 더 많은 목표를 가지고 더 좋은 길을 향해서 달려 나가는 것이 당연하다 할 것입니다. 하지만 우리들의 마음 가운데 그럼에도 불구하고 자족하는 마음이 있어야 되고, 우리의 마음이 욕심 가운데 있는 것이 아니라 늘 하나님께서 내게 허락하신 것을 보면서 항상 감사하는 마음으로 살아가는 것이 오늘 우리들에게 주어지는 정말 좋은 영적인 삶의 방식이라는 사실을 기억해야 할 것입니다.
그래서 오늘 우리들이 살아가는 가운데 우리들의 마음 가운데 욕심이 너무 과하지 아니하도록, 그래서 나의 욕심이 죄를 낳게 되는 결과, 그리고 그 죄가 사망으로 연결되는 결과로 가지 아니하도록 우리 자신을 잘 다스리고 마음을 잘 정돈시켜서 하나님의 말씀 앞에 순종해 나가는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 안타깝게도 이 시므리라고 하는 사람은 욕심 가운데서 쿠데타를 일으켰을 뿐만 아니라, 그리고 그 욕심이 과하게 되고 또 잘못된 길로 가면서 하나님을 무시하고 우상을 섬기며 악한 길로 갔다고 하는 것이 문제인 것이죠. 이 시므리의 잘못이 무엇입니까? 시므리의 잘못을 열왕기상 16장 19절에서 기록하고 있는데, “이는 그가 여호와 보시기에 악을 행하여 범죄하였기 때문이니라 그가 여로보암의 길로 행하며 그가 이스라엘에게 죄를 범하게 한 그 죄 중에 행하였더라” 표현하고 있는데요. 시므리가 그 짧은 기간에 하나님 앞에 악을 행했다.
여로보암의 길로 갔다, 결국 망하게 되었다라고 설명하고 있습니다. 만일 이 사람이 정말 하나님 앞에 진실하게 선 사람이었다고 한다면 욕심을 부리지 않았을 것이고, 뿐만 아니라 여로보암의 길로 가는 것이 아니라 하나님을 섬기는 자리로 갔을 것이고, 그리고 하나님 앞에 신실한 모습으로 갔을 텐데 그의 마음 가운데 죄성으로 가득 차 있기 때문에 결국 악한 길로, 하나님께서 원하지 않는 길로 갔다고 하는 것이 너무나도 안타까운 거예요. 우리들의 마음 가운데 욕심이 생기면 탐욕이 곧 죄라고 성경은 가르쳐 주고 있는데, 이런 욕심 가운데서 탐욕 가운데서 망하는 길로 갈 수밖에 없었다고 하는 것이 너무나도 놀랍고요. 더군다나 놀라운 것은 무엇입니까? 이 왕이, 시므리가 왕의 자리에 있은 지 얼마 동안 있었다고 했어요? 7일간 있었는데, 놀랍게도 그 짧은 7일 동안에 무엇을 했느냐 악을 행했다고 하는 게 놀라운 거예요.
얼마나 짧은 시간이에요. 그 너무나도 짧은 그 시간에 악을 행했다고 하는 것이 놀라운 것인데요. 선을 행하자고 하면 왜 이렇게 시간이 많이 걸리는지 몰라요. 정말 “우리가 하나님의 뜻대로 삽시다, 하나님의 말씀대로 삽시다, 성경 좀 읽읍시다, 기도하며 삽시다, 감사하며 삽시다” 아무리 이야기해도 그것을 실천하고 순종하는 데 너무나도 많은 시간이 걸리는데, 악을 행하는 데는 왜 이렇게 짧은 시간에 그렇게 쉽게 악을 저지르는지… 우리들의 기본 디폴트 상태가 너무나도 쉽게 악을 저지르는 데 익숙해져 있는 상황인 것을 보면서 오늘 우리들도 이런 잘못 가운데 빠지지 아니하도록 오늘 우리들의 마음 가운데 하나님 앞에 기도하며 나아가야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
주님 저희들의 마음을 주장해 주셔서 악한 길로 가지 않게 해 주시고, 욕심이 잉태하여 탐욕이 잉태하여 죄를 짓고 사망의 길로 가지 아니하도록 우리가 정말 하나님 앞에 기도하며 엎드리는 가운데 우리가 하나님의 말씀 가운데 진실하게 되돌아서고 믿음의 길로 걸어가는 그런 확실한 결단들이 오늘 우리들 가운데 있어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 그러면서 기도하십시다. 주님 저희들이 이 세상에서 선한 능력으로 살게 하여 주옵소서. 그 짧은 시간, 그 짧은 기간에 악한 일들을 하면서 죄악 가운데 살아가는 인생이 아니라 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 가운데 주님께서 기뻐하시는 삶을 살게 해 주옵소서. 주님께서 우리를 위하여 십자가를 지셨는데 그 십자가를 모독하며 악한 길로 가는 것이 아니라 선한 길로 겸손하게 감사하며 승리하며 살아가는 삶 되게 해 주옵소서. 기도하는 가운데 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
The Seven-Day Reign: The Tragedy of Unchecked Ambition
Today, we are going to briefly look at the story of Zimri, who can be called the fifth king of Northern Israel. We have reviewed the names of the kings of Northern Israel several times now. Do you remember them? You don’t? Well, what can we do? It’s hard to keep track. The first king was Jeroboam, then his son Nadab. But Nadab was killed, a second dynasty began, and a third king emerged: Baasha, and then his son Elah. Amazing—some of you actually remember! But today, we examine the story of Zimri, who killed Elah. Although Zimri started what could have been a third dynasty, he was killed only seven days after becoming king; it ended as a “seven-day reign.” Zimri was the person who held the throne for the shortest period of time. You might say that although he took power through a coup, strictly speaking, he failed to make that coup successful.
His intent—his rebellion—ended in failure in just seven days. As we saw last time, Mr. Zimri killed King Elah, the son of King Baasha, in order to become king himself. Zimri was originally a military commander under King Elah. He wasn’t the overall commander-in-chief, but one of several commanders leading about half of the chariot force. When news reached others that Zimri had rebelled, killed King Elah, and ascended the throne himself, who heard it? It was Omri, another military commander… Zimri and Omri, their names are very similar. The news that Zimri had staged a coup and become king reached Omri. It’s quite remarkable. Was there a mobile phone back then? Was there YouTube?
Even without any of that, the news that a rebellion and a coup had occurred spread so quickly that the military commander standing in a far-off battlefield heard it, turned his army around, and came back. He surrounded the city of Tirzah, where Zimri was ruling. Realizing, “Ah, this isn’t going to work,” Zimri understood that the regime he tried to establish through rebellion could not last. Seeing that he couldn’t continue, he went into the citadel of the royal palace, set it on fire, and committed suicide. Thus, the reign of King Zimri ended in just seven days. Looking at this story, we can ask a question. Of course, we cannot change historical facts, but if we were to ask: what would Zimri’s life have been like if he had never staged that coup?
If Zimri had not rebelled, what kind of life could he have lived? We can speculate that he would have lived comfortably, served well as a military commander, met a peaceful death, and his children would have lived comfortably as well. However, greed arose in the heart of this man who could have enjoyed wealth and power as an influential figure under King Elah. He saw that if he killed King Elah and seized power, he might actually succeed. He thought, “If I stage a coup, the nation of Israel will become mine. If I lead my soldiers well in this rebellion, I will live in luxury for the rest of my life.”
If you succeed, you become a hero; if you fail, you become a criminal. He staged the coup thinking he could peacefully be king forever, but what was the result? He seemed to ascend the throne and seemed to succeed, but in the end, it brought the tragic result of a ruined life, being killed in just seven days. This is something we need to reflect on today.
As Zimri rebelled, what did he think he must do for the coup to succeed? What did Zimri do? It says he killed all of Baasha’s family. He killed every male in the house of Baasha—those who “urinate against a wall”—leaving not a single Goel (kinsman-redeemer), not a single savior, and not a single blood-avenger. He calculated that by wiping out the entire family in a total massacre, no one would be left to overturn his coup. It seemed he had succeeded. But what did he fail to take into account? He failed to calculate that he had to deal with Omri. He failed to calculate that he had to win the hearts of the people.
In fact, it’s not enough to succeed in just one or two things; there are so many things to consider. But he neglected all those factors and thought that simply killing his enemies would make him successful. In the end, it all turned into failure. So, we must think today: how did Zimri fall? How did he end as a seven-day reign? Why did Zimri’s life, which could have been lived well if he hadn’t rebelled, end in such a catastrophe? Where do you think the cause lies? We can conclude it was in Zimri’s greed. When greed arises in our hearts, what should we do? The teaching of the Bible in James 1:15 (ESV) records: “Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” That’s it. It’s very simple.
It is a very certain teaching. Desire began to conceive in Zimri’s heart. That desire gives birth to sin, and when sin is fully grown, it brings forth death. Ultimately, Zimri staged a coup out of greed and ended up with a ruined life. Therefore, the lesson we must learn today is that we need to govern the greed in our hearts. I hope you remember that a heart of contentment—being satisfied and thankful for little, for the place God has put us, and for the things He has allowed—is a truly important virtue for us as saints. 1 Timothy 6:6–8 (ESV) records: “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.”
Amen. Saints, do you have food? Is your answer a bit weak? You all ate before coming here this morning, didn’t you? Do you have clothes? You are wearing them now. You came wearing good clothes. Then you should know how to be thankful. You must know how to be content. You need to realize and be thankful that “God has allowed me many things; God has granted me something immense.” Please do not misunderstand. I am by no means saying it is wrong to strive for a better life.
Naturally, if we have five talents, we should utilize them well to gain five more. If we have two talents, we should gain two more. If God has given us gifts, we shouldn’t let them rot or just bury them. It is only right to move toward a better path to gain more, to do good, and to do the work of God’s kingdom with greater goals. However, despite that, we must have a heart of contentment. We must remember that living with a heart of gratitude, looking at what God has allowed rather than living in greed, is a truly good spiritual way of life.
Therefore, as we live today, we must all become those who govern ourselves and organize our hearts well to obey God’s Word, so that greed does not become excessive in our hearts, leading to sin and eventually to death. Unfortunately, the problem with Zimri was not only that he staged a coup out of greed, but that as his greed grew, he went down a wrong path—ignoring God, serving idols, and walking in wickedness. What was Zimri’s fault? 1 Kings 16:19 (ESV) records his fault: “Because of his sins that he committed, doing evil in the sight of the LORD, walking in the way of Jeroboam, and for his sin which he committed, making Israel to sin.” It says that even in that short period, Zimri did evil before God.
It explains that he walked in the way of Jeroboam and eventually perished. If this man had stood sincerely before God, he wouldn’t have been greedy. Not only that, he wouldn’t have walked in the way of Jeroboam but would have moved toward serving God with a faithful heart. However, because his heart was full of sin, he walked a wicked path that God did not desire. That is so tragic. The Bible teaches that when greed arises in our hearts, covetousness is sin. It is startling that he could only go down the path of ruin because of such greed and covetousness. Furthermore, what is even more surprising? How long did I say this king, Zimri, held the throne? Seven days. Remarkably, even in those short seven days, it says he did evil.
What a short amount of time! It is astonishing that he committed evil in such a brief period. I don’t know why it takes so much time when we try to do good. No matter how much we say, “Let’s live according to God’s will, let’s live by His word, let’s read the Bible, let’s live praying, let’s live with gratitude,” it takes so much time to practice and obey. Yet, when it comes to doing evil, why is it that people commit it so easily in such a short time? Seeing that our basic “default state” is so accustomed to committing evil easily, I believe we must all pray to God today so that we do not fall into such errors.
We must all have a firm resolution to truly turn back to God’s Word and walk the path of faith, praying and prostrating ourselves before Him so that He may rule our hearts, keeping us from wicked paths and preventing desire from conceiving sin and leading to death. Let us pray as we do this. Lord, let us live with the power of goodness in this world. Let us not be lives that live in sin, doing evil things in a short time, but let us live lives that please You as we obey Your will. You bore the cross for us; let us not mock that cross by walking wicked paths, but let us live lives of humble gratitude, triumphing on the path of goodness. I pray in the name of the Lord that we all may triumph as we pray.
