서로 발을 씻어주라 (요 13:12-15)
지난 주일에 우리는 예수님께서 유월절 만찬을 하시면서 성찬 예식을 제정하신 이야기를 살펴보았습니다. 예수님께서 십자가에서 죽으시는 그 죽음이 그냥 죽음이 아니라, 바로 우리들을 살리시기 위해서, 우리에게 생명을 주시기 위해서 주시는 그 생명의 은혜라고 하는 것을 보여주시기 위해서 성찬 예식을 거행하신 것이라고 하겠는데요. 그런데 놀랍게도 이 성찬 예식이 이루어지고 있는 유월절 만찬을 통해서 자신의 죽음이 그냥 죽는 죽음이 아니라 우리를 위해서 자신의 몸을 다 드리는 그런 희생의 십자가 사건이라고 하는 사실을 설명해 주는 그 자리에 우리 제자들의 마음 가운데는 어떤 마음들이 있었는가? 제자들의 마음 가운데는 여러 가지 악한 생각들이 많이 있었는데요. 특별히 가룟 유다는 그 현장 가운데서 예수님을 팔아넘길 계획을 머릿속에서 생각하고 있는 거죠.
예수님을 팔아먹으려고 하는 생각을 가지고 있었던 것이고, 또한 다른 제자들은 괜찮았는가? 나머지 열한 제자는 괜찮았는가? 그게 아니라 그 나머지 열한 제자들도 서로 누가 높으냐, 내가 높으냐 네가 높으냐 하면서 서로 자신이 높아지려고 하는 그런 교만한 마음 가운데 서로 자신이 더 높은 것에만 관심이 있었다고 하는 것이죠. 그 가운데 그 누구도 발을 씻어주지 않았습니다. 오늘날 우리들의 입장에서는 발을 왜 씻는가 이상하게 생각이 들겠지만, 그 당시 사람들은 밖에 나갔다 돌아오면 발을 씻어주게 되어 있었는데 그런데 아무도 발을 씻어주지 않는 겁니다. 발을 누가 씻어주는가? 하인이 씻어주는 것이고, 낮은 자리에 있는 사람이 씻어주는 것이고, 그런 사람들이나 하는 것이지, 씻으려고 하면 다른 사람이 씻어줘야 된다고 생각하면서 아무도 발을 씻어주지 않으면서 그렇게 앉아 있는 그 제자들의 모습을 보시고 예수님께서 일어나셨습니다.
겉옷을 벗고 수건을 가져다가 허리에 두르시고 제자들의 발을 하나씩 둘씩 씻어주기 시작했는데, 그 모습을 보고 제자들이 너무나도 깜짝 놀라서 얼마나 부끄러웠을지 아마 당황스러웠을 것입니다. 그래서 베드로는 예수님에게 말을 했습니다. “주님, 주님은 제 발을 씻기실 수 없습니다. 그렇게 할 수 없습니다.” 다른 제자들이 나를 씻어주는 것은 당연하게 기대했으면서도, 그러나 예수님께서 자신의 발을 씻어주는 것은 너무나도 부끄러워서 내 발을 씻을 수 없다고 그렇게 거절했지만, 예수님께서는 일일이 발을 다 씻어주시면서 그렇게 말씀해 주신 이유가 무엇이냐면 또 다른 교훈을 주기 위한 것이죠. 예수님의 죽으심이 어떤 죽으심인가?
마치 우리가 발을 씻어서 물로 씻어서 우리의 몸을 깨끗하게 하듯이, 예수님의 죽으심으로 흘리시는 그 보혈의 피가 사실은 우리의 영적인 죄를 다 씻어내고 우리를 깨끗하게 하기 위한, 우리를 거룩하게 만드시기 위한 주님의 십자가에서의 희생이라고 하는 것을 보여주시기 위해서 예수님께서는 일일이 발을 씻어 주신 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 예수님께서 발을 다 씻으신 다음에 해주셨던 말씀이 오늘 13절에서부터 15절 말씀 가운데 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. “너희가 나를 선생이라 또는 주라 하니 너희 말이 옳도다 내가 그러하다 내가 주와 또는 선생이 되어 너희 발을 씻었으니 너희도 서로 발을 씻어 주는 것이 옳으니라 내가 너희에게 행한 것 같이 너희도 행하게 하려 하여 본을 보였노라” 예수님께서 제자들에게 말씀하시는 겁니다.
“내가 누구냐 너희들의 선생이 아니냐 너희들의 주가 아니냐 그러나 내가 너희들의 발을 씻었던 것처럼 너희도 서로 발을 씻어주라.” 그렇게 말을 하시면서 오늘 주님께서 제자들에게 교훈을 해주셨고, 오늘 저와 여러분들이 발견해야 될 교훈이 있다면 주님께서 우리를 위해서 발을 씻기셨던 것처럼 서로의 발을 씻어주는 그런 모습으로 우리가 변화될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 예수님께서 발을 씻어주라고 하셨으니까 세족식을 하면 되는 걸까요? 그게 아니죠. 예수님께서 발을 씻어주라고 말씀하신 것은 섬기는 자가 되라고 하는 말씀입니다. 높은 자리에 올라가서 다른 사람들의 대접받기를 좋아하고 다른 사람들이 나를 섬기기를 원하고, 나는 내가 높은 자리에 올라가기를 원하는 게 우리들의 마음인데, 예수님께서 우리들에게 들려주시는 교훈이 무엇이냐면 낮은 자리로 내려가서 섬기는 자가 되어야 한다 마태복음 20장 25절에서부터 28절의 말씀 가운데 말씀해 주셨습니다.
“예수께서 제자들을 불러다가 이르시되 이방인의 집권자들이 그들을 임의로 주관하고 그 고관들이 그들에게 권세를 부리는 줄을 너희가 알거니와 너희 중에는 그렇지 않아야 하나니 너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 너희의 종이 되어야 하리라” 주님께서 우리에게 들려주시는 권면의 말씀이 높아지려고 하지 말고 낮은 자리에 가서 다른 사람을 섬기는 자가 되라 권면해 주신 이 주님의 말씀을 오늘 하루 깊이 묵상하는 가운데 주님께서 어떻게 하셨는가? 주님께서도 낮은 자리까지 오셔서 우리를 위해서 섬기셨던 것처럼 우리는 어떤 삶을 살 것인가? 다른 사람들을 부리고 주관하고 갑질하는 인생이 아니라 섬기고 다른 사람들에게 봉사하며 사랑을 베푸는 낮은 자리로 내려가는 그런 믿음의 결단들이 오늘 우리들에게 있어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 예수님께서는 어떻게 하셨습니까?
빌립보서 2장 6절에서부터 8절의 말씀에 “그는 근본 하나님의 본체시나 하나님과 동등됨을 취할 것으로 여기지 아니하시고 오히려 자기를 비워 종의 형체를 가지사 사람들과 같이 되셨고 사람의 모양으로 나타나사 자기를 낮추시고 죽기까지 복종하셨으니 곧 십자가에 죽으심이라” 주님께서 나를 위해서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으시기까지 가장 낮은 자리까지, 침 뱉음을 당하고 모욕을 당하고 그렇게 엄청난 고난을 당하면서까지라도 우리를 위해서 희생하신 그 놀라운 사랑을 생각한다면 이 세상에 기분 나쁠 일이 없어요. 이 세상에 괴로울 일이 없어요. 주님께서 나를 위해서 피 흘려주시고 우리를 위해서 발을 씻겨주신 그 놀라운 사랑을 생각한다면 걱정될 일이 없다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 오늘 저와 여러분들이 주님께서 들려주신 이 말씀 항상 기억할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
뿐만 아니라 발을 씻기라고 하는 것은 어떤 의미입니까? 그냥 섬기기만 하면 된다고 하는 의미일까요? 발을 씻겼다고 하는 말의 의미는 예수님께서 물을 떠다가 발만 씻기신 것이 아니라 사실은 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으심으로 말미암아 우리의 죄를 씻어주신 것이죠. 예수님께서 우리에게 행하신 일은 단순히 발만 씻긴 것이 아니라 사실은 그 발을 씻긴 것을 통해 무엇을 나타내는 것인가, 예수님의 십자가의 죽으심이 바로 우리들의 죄를 씻긴 것과 마찬가지로 우리는 어떻게 해야 되는가? 우리도 십자가를 지고 낮은 자리로 내려가서 주님이 우리를 위해서 피를 흘리시고 모든 것을 씻겨주셨던 것처럼 우리 주변의 사람들에게 사랑을 베풀고 섬기는 자의 모습으로 낮아질 수 있는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 부담스러운 말씀입니까? 좋은 말씀입니까? 굉장히 부담스럽게 느껴질 것이라고 생각이 드는데요. 그런데 부담스러운 것이 아니라 이것이 행복인 줄로 알아야 합니다.
우리 부모님들이 우리 자녀들을 위해서 몸을 씻기고 밤잠 자지 못하면서 아이들을 돌보고, 힘들게 내가 직장에 다녀와서 힘들고 고통스러우면서도 우리 아이들에게 맛있는 밥을 짓기 위해서 수고하고 애쓰는 것이 힘들어요? 고통스러워요? 행복한 일이에요. 사랑하는 자녀들을 위해서, 내 사랑하는 사람을 위해서 내가 희생하고 내가 열심히 내 몸이 부스러진다고 할지라도 우리 자녀들이 행복할 수만 있다면, 우리 아이들의 얼굴에서 웃음꽃이 피기만 한다면, 내가 이 모든 것을 희생해가면서라도 그를 위해서 우리가 모든 것을 다 바쳐도 전혀 괴로운 것이 아니라 그 아이가 웃는 그 모습을 보면서 이 아이가 행복해하는 모습을 보면서 우리가 너무나도 행복한 것과 마찬가지로, 우리 주님께서는 십자가에 달리시는 것이 너무나도 고통스러운 것이지만 그렇기 때문에 너무나도 힘들다 너무나도 고통스럽다 하면서 십자가에 못 박히신 것이 아니라, 주님께서는 십자가에 못 박히시기 전에 제자들을 사랑하시되 “끝까지 사랑하시니라” 말씀을 기록하고 있는 것처럼 우리의 믿음의 길, 우리가 헌신하며 또한 우리가 낮아져서 이웃을 섬기고 사랑을 보여주는 그 길은 힘들고 고통스러운 것이 아닙니다.
우리들의 마음 가운데 사랑이 없이 그냥 의무적으로 내가 돈을 벌기 위해서 해야 된다고 하면 고통스러울까요? 내가 돈을 벌기 위해서 내가 힘들게 힘들게 야근을 해야 되고, 내가 돈을 벌기 위해서 새벽 배송을 해야 되고, 내가 돈을 벌기 위해서 오늘 또 직장을 가서 해야 된다고 한다면 돈이 우리들의 목적이 된다면 그 하는 모든 일들이 괴롭고 힘들고 어려울 수밖에 없어요. 그러나 사랑하는 우리 가정을 위해서, 내가 사랑하는 사람을 위해서 내가 희생한다면 돈 한 푼 받지 않아도 그 어떠한 대가가 없다고 할지라도 내가 발을 씻기는 것이 행복하고 좋은 것인 것처럼 우리 주님께서 우리에게 요구하시는 것은 힘들고 어려운 것이 아니라 사실은 너무나도 행복하고 가장 기쁘고 가장 좋은 길이라고 하는 사실을 저와 여러분들이 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
십자가의 길이라고 하는 것은 무엇인가? 주님께서 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라 말씀해 주고 있는데 그 십자가의 길은 고통스러운 길이 아니라 예수님께서 말씀하시기를 “내 멍에는 쉽고 내 짐은 가벼움이라” 주님을 사랑하는 마음으로 내 이웃을, 우리 형제를, 우리 가족을 사랑하는 마음으로 발을 씻기는 것은 어려운 일이 아니라 수치스러운 일이 아니라 행복한 일이요 기쁨의 길이라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서, 오늘 이번 고난 주간 묵상하는 가운데 주님께서는 어떻게 십자가를 지셨는가 주님께서는 어떤 기쁨으로 이 발을 씻으셨는가 묵상하면서 오늘도 우리들의 삶 가운데 발을 씻김으로써 오히려 더 기쁨이 넘쳐나고 십자가를 짐으로써 오히려 더 행복할 수 있는 그런 믿음의 승리가 있을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
Washing Feet with Joy: The Happiness of Serving Like Christ
Last Sunday, we examined the story of Jesus instituting the Holy Communion during the Passover supper. We noted that the Lord conducted the Holy Communion to show that His death on the cross was not just an ordinary death, but a grace of life given to save us and grant us life. However, it is remarkable to consider what was in the hearts of the disciples at that very table—the Passover supper where Jesus was explaining that His death was a sacrificial cross event, the giving of His entire body for us. In the hearts of the disciples, there were many wicked thoughts. Specifically, Judas Iscariot was already planning in his mind to hand Jesus over.
He held the thought of selling Jesus, but what about the others? Were the other eleven disciples okay? No, even those eleven were caught up in pride, interested only in who was the greatest, arguing among themselves about who was higher than the other. In that atmosphere, not one of them offered to wash anyone’s feet. From our perspective today, we might find the act of washing feet strange, but in those days, it was customary to wash one’s feet upon returning from outside. Yet, no one would do it. Who usually washes feet? A servant does it; a person in a low position does it. Thinking that such a task was only for “those kinds of people” and expecting someone else to do it, the disciples just sat there. Seeing this, Jesus stood up.
He took off His outer robe, took a towel, wrapped it around His waist, and began to wash the disciples’ feet one by one. Seeing this, the disciples must have been startled, embarrassed, and flustered. So Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, You shall never wash my feet. You cannot do that.” Though Peter had naturally expected the other disciples to wash him, he was too ashamed to let Jesus wash his feet and refused. However, the reason Jesus insisted on washing every single one of their feet was to teach them another lesson. What kind of death was Jesus’ death?
Just as we wash our bodies with water to make them clean, Jesus washed their feet to show that the precious blood shed through His death is a sacrifice on the cross intended to wash away our spiritual sins, making us clean and holy. After washing all their feet, Jesus spoke these words recorded in John 13:13–15 (ESV):
“You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.”
Jesus is saying to the disciples: “Who am I? Am I not your Teacher? Am I not your Lord? Yet, just as I have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” As He spoke these words, He gave a lesson to His disciples, and if there is a lesson for you and me to discover today, I pray in the name of the Lord that we may be transformed into people who wash one another’s feet, just as the Lord washed ours. Does this mean we should simply hold a foot-washing ceremony because Jesus said so? No. When Jesus said to wash one another’s feet, He was telling us to become servants. Our hearts naturally want to reach high places, be treated well by others, and have others serve us. But the lesson Jesus gives us is that we must go down to the low places and be servants. He spoke of this in Matthew 20:25–28 (ESV):
“But Jesus called them to him and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave.’”
As we deeply meditate today on the Lord’s exhortation to not seek high status but to go to the low places and serve others, we must ask: how did the Lord act? Just as the Lord came down to the lowest place and served us, what kind of life will we live? I believe we must have a resolution of faith today to go down to the low places—not to a life of ordering people around, controlling them, or abusing power, but to a life of serving, volunteering, and bestowing love upon others. How did Jesus act?
Philippians 2:6–8 (ESV) records: “who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” When we think of that marvelous love—how the Lord sacrificed Himself for us, enduring spitting, insults, and immense suffering even unto death on a cross for me—there is nothing in this world to feel offended by. There is nothing to be distressed about. Remembering that there is no need to worry when we consider the amazing love of the Lord who shed His blood and washed our feet, I pray in the name of the Lord that you and I may always keep this word in our hearts.
Furthermore, what does it mean to “wash feet”? Does it mean simply that serving is enough? The meaning of washing feet is not just that Jesus brought water and washed skin; it signifies that He washed away our sins through His death on the cross. What Jesus did for us was not merely washing feet; rather, through that act, He was showing that His death on the cross washes our sins. Therefore, what must we do? I believe we must all become those who can humble ourselves—bearing the cross, going to the low places, and showing love and service to those around us, just as the Lord shed His blood and washed everything away for us. Does this sound like a burdensome word? Or a good word? I imagine it might feel quite burdensome. However, we must realize that this is not a burden, but happiness.
When our parents wash our children’s bodies, look after them through sleepless nights, and work hard to cook a delicious meal for them even when they are exhausted from work—is that hard? Is it agonizing? No, it is a happy thing. For the sake of beloved children and loved ones, even if we sacrifice and our bodies are worn out, as long as our children can be happy and a smile blooms on their faces—even if we give everything for them at the cost of our own sacrifice—it is not painful at all. Seeing that child smile and be happy makes us happy. Similarly, although hanging on the cross was incredibly painful, Jesus did not hang there complaining about how hard and agonizing it was. As the scripture records that Jesus, before being crucified, loved His disciples and “loved them to the end,” our path of faith—the path of devotion, humbling ourselves, and serving our neighbors in love—is not a hard and agonizing path.
If we were to do something out of obligation, without love, just to earn money, would it be agonizing? If I have to work late and suffer to earn money, if I have to do early morning deliveries to earn money, if I have to go to work today just to earn money—if money becomes our only purpose—then everything we do is bound to be painful and difficult. However, just as washing feet is happy and good when done for a beloved family and loved ones without receiving a penny or any reward, I believe you and I must remember that what the Lord requires of us is not a hard and difficult task, but actually the happiest, most joyful, and best path of all.
What is the way of the cross? The Lord told us to take up our cross and follow Him, but that way of the cross is not a path of agony. Jesus said, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30, ESV). Remembering that washing the feet of our neighbors, our brothers, and our families with a heart of love for the Lord is not a difficult or shameful task, but a happy and joyful path, I pray in the name of the Lord that as we meditate during this Passion Week—reflecting on how the Lord bore the cross and with what joy He washed those feet—we may have a victory of faith, finding even greater joy by washing feet and even greater happiness by bearing the cross in our lives today.
