가장 큰 계명 (마 22:34-40)

예수님께서 고난 주간 월요일 날 성전에서 장사하는 사람들의 상을 뒤엎으신 일을 벌이신 후에, 예수님께서는 그날 밤 베다니로 가셔서 하룻밤을 묵으셨습니다. 예루살렘 동쪽에 있는 마을이죠. 당시에 순례자들이 예루살렘에 많이 찾아오게 되었는데, 예루살렘이라고 하는 곳은 좁은 곳이기 때문에 모든 사람들이 거기에 머물 수 없어서 그 주변 마을로 갔다가 다시 다음 날 오곤 했는데 예수님께서도 그렇게 하셨던 것입니다. 화요일날 행적, 예수님의 행적은 무엇이 있었는가? 무화과나무를 보시면서 무화과나무의 열매는 없고 잎사귀만 무성한 것을 보시면서 다시는 열매를 맺지 못하게 될 거라고 선언해 주셨는데요. 바로 그것이 그 당시 유대인들의 모습을 그대로 드러내는 것과 같다 하겠습니다.

영적인 그런 행동들은 많이 하는데, 종교적인 열정들은 많이 보여주고 있지만, 그러나 참된 믿음이 없는 그런 정말 아무 의미가 없는 신앙생활 하고 있었던 그 유대인들의 모습을 보여주시면서, 이런 상태로 계속된다고 한다면 결국 심판을 받을 수밖에 없다는 것을 생생하게 보여주시는 것으로 하나님의 말씀을 전해 주신 것이라고 하겠습니다. 예수님께서는 이 화요일날 예루살렘에 오셔서 많은 교훈을 가르쳐 주셨는데, 어제 있었던 일로 인해서 사람들이 예수님에게 질문하기도 하고 따지기도 하고 그러는 가운데 예수님께서 정말 많은 교훈의 말씀을 해 주신 날이 오늘 화요일이라고 하겠습니다. 예수님께서 들려주신 그 말씀 가운데 수많은 메시지가 하나의 그 초점이 있다고 한다면 종말에 관한 메시지입니다. 마지막 때에 대한 가르침을 예수님께서 해주셨는데요. 종말에 관한 메시지는 미래에 대한 메시지가 아니라 사실 오늘날 여기서 우리가 어떻게 살아야 할 것인가에 대한 현재에 관한 메시지라 하겠습니다.

종말의 때가 과연 언젠가, 미래가 언제인가, 그날이 언젠가 하는 미래에 대한 관심이 아니라, 결국 있을 하나님의 심판이 오기 전에 지금 내가 여기서 무엇을 해야 하는가에 초점이 맞추어진 그런 교훈이라고 할 수 있을 텐데요. 어떻게 우리는 슬기로운 다섯 처녀처럼 살아갈 수 있을 것인가, 어떻게 우리는 다섯 달란트, 두 달란트 맡은 종처럼 살아갈 수 있겠는가 하는 거기에 초점을 맞춘 메시지가 이런 종말에 관한 메시지입니다. 오늘 우리가 어떻게 살아야 할까요? 종말이 있다고 한다면 우리들에게는 모두가 종말이 있는데요. 개인적인 종말이든 우주적인 종말이든 어떤 종말이든 맞이할 수밖에 없는 우리의 인생인데, 아직 우리에게 기회가 있을 때, 아직 우리가 살아 있을 때 우리는 어떻게 살아야 할 것인가… 예수님께서 가르쳐 주신 말씀, 오늘 말씀이 바로 그 말씀이 아닐까 싶습니다. 예수님께서는 이렇게 말씀해 주셨습니다.

마태복음 22장 37절에서 40절 말씀에 “예수께서 이르시되 네 마음을 다하고 목숨을 다하고 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하라 하셨으니 이것이 크고 첫째 되는 계명이요 둘째도 그와 같으니 네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라 하셨으니 이 두 계명이 온 율법과 선지자의 강령이니라” 하나님의 말씀대로 우리가 살아야 할 텐데 그 하나님의 말씀을 요약하면 무엇인가, 하나님 사랑, 이웃 사랑이라고 하는 두 가지의 가르침으로 요약할 수 있다고 하셨습니다. 먼저 하나님을 어떻게 사랑하는 것이라고 할까요? 하나님을 사랑해야 한다고 하면 어떻게 하는 것이 하나님을 사랑하는 것입니까? 우리가 예배를 많이 드리며 하나님을 사랑하는 것일까요? 그게 아닙니다. 물론 예배를 많이 드려야 하고 당연히 드려야 하겠지만, 예배를 많이 드리는 것이 그게 하나님을 사랑하는 방법이 아닌 거예요. 우리가 종교적인 행위를 많이 하는 게 그것만이 하나님을 사랑하는 방법이라고 말할 수 없습니다.

오히려 그런 모습을 보인 유대인들을 향해서 하나님께서는 “너희가 다시는 제물을 가져오지 마라, 너희가 예배하지 마라” 그렇게까지 말씀해 주고 계시는데요. 하나님을 사랑하는 그 사랑의 핵심이 있다고 한다면, 하나님의 말씀에 따라 순종하는 것이 하나님을 사랑하는 것이라는 것을 기억할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 우리는 누구의 이야기를 들어야 됩니까? 사탄이 우리를 유혹하고 우리로 하여금 부추겨서 악을 행하게 하는 그 사탄의 소리에 귀를 기울이는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 하나님의 말씀에 따라 순종하며 사는 것이 하나님을 사랑하는 것이다라는 것을 기억해야 합니다. 요한일서 5장 3절 말씀에 이렇게 기록합니다. “하나님을 사랑하는 것은 이것이니 우리가 그의 계명들을 지키는 것이라 그의 계명들은 무거운 것이 아니로다” 하나님을 사랑하는 것이 무엇인가… 요한일서의 말씀 가운데 그의 계명들, 하나님의 말씀들을 지키는 것이다 가르치고 있는데, 하나님의 말씀의 핵심이 무엇입니까?

하나님의 말씀의 핵심은 형제를 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 거예요. 하나님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이 두 개 따로 별개의 가르침이 아니라, 하나님 사랑이 제일 중요하고 이웃 사랑은 나머지 그저 뒤따라오는 그것이 아니라, 사실 하나님에 대한 사랑이 무엇으로 나타나야 되는가… 우리 이웃에 대한 사랑으로, 사람들에 대한 사랑으로 나타나야 그게 하나님에 대한 사랑이다 성경은 가르쳐 주고 있다는 것을 기억해야 할 겁니다. 만일 우리가 이웃을 사랑하지 않는다면 하나님을 사랑하는 것이 아니라고 성경은 가르치고 있는 것이죠. 요한일서 4장 20절 말씀에 그렇게 기록합니다. “누구든지 하나님을 사랑하노라 하고 그 형제를 미워하면 이는 거짓말하는 자니 보는 바 그 형제를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 보지 못하는 바 하나님을 사랑할 수 없느니라” 마지막 날에 하나님께서 우리를 놓고 심판하실 겁니다.

“너는 왜 내가 굶주렸을 때 나를 외면했느냐? 너는 내가 왜 아팠을 때 전혀 돌아보지 않았느냐? 내가 감옥에 갇혔을 때 너는 왜 또 나를 돌아보지 아니하였느냐?” 사람들에게 하지 아니한 것이 곧 하나님에게 하지 아니한 것이고, 사람들에게 한 것이 곧 하나님에게 한 것이라고 하는 주님의 심판의 메시지를 들으면서, 오늘 우리의 삶 가운데서 우리가 주님을 사랑한다고 말하면서 실제로는 하나님을 사랑하지 않았던 우리들의 모습을 회개하며 주님 앞에 엎드리는 오늘 이 아침이 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 참된 경건이란 무엇인가? 야고보서 1장 27절의 말씀에 “하나님 아버지 앞에서 정결하고 더러움이 없는 경건은 곧 고아와 과부를 그 환난 중에 돌보고 또 자기를 지켜 세속에 물들지 아니하는 그것이니라” 말씀하고 있습니다. 사탄은 끊임없이 미워하라고 하고 증오하라고 말하고 원수를 갚으라고 말하고, 저런 나쁜 사람은 무시해 버리라고 말하고 우리들의 마음을 충동질하는 것이죠.

하지만 하나님은 우리가 사랑하기를 원하셔요. 누구까지 사랑해야 됩니까? 원수까지. 나를 괴롭게 하고 나를 무시하고 나를 고통스럽게 만드는 그런 원수까지도 사랑하는 게 하나님께서 우리에게 원하시는 것이고, 하나님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하는 것이 그게 하나님을 사랑하는 것이고, 하나님의 뜻대로 살아가는 것이고, 마지막 때를 준비하는 오늘 우리들의 삶의 모습이라는 사실을 믿을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 어떻게 사랑해야 합니까? 오래 참아야 하는 거죠. 참고, 인내하고, 화가 나는 일이 있어도, 괴로운 일이 있어도 참아야 하는 것이, 내가 하고 싶은 말이 있어도 참아야 하는 거예요. 불편한 마음이 있고 고통스러운 마음이 있어도 참아야 하는 거예요. 참고 견디고 인내하는 것이 사랑하는 것이고… 어떻게 사랑하는 겁니까? 친절을 베풀어야 되는 것이죠.

악을 행하는 것이 아니라 다른 사람들을 도와주고 친절을 베풀고 사랑의 마음으로 은혜를 베풀어 주는 그런 마음을 보여줘야 되는 것이고, 시기와 질투의 마음으로 사람들을 바라보는 것이 아니라 누군가 조금 잘하는 것 같으면 미워하고, 누가 좀 잘 나가는 것 같으면 질투하고 그런 아니꼬운 눈으로 바라보는 것이 아니라, 할아버지가, 할머니가 손주들을 사랑의 눈으로 바라보듯이 사랑하는 마음으로 이웃들을 바라보아야 하는 것이고, 무례하게 행동하는 것이 아니라 함부로 대하는 것이 아니라 나보다 조금 못한 사람 같기도 하고 뭔가 부족해 보이는 사람들이 있으면 무시해 버리고 아는 척하지 않고 경멸하는 눈으로 바라보는 것이 아니라 사랑의 눈으로 감싸며 돌보는 믿음의 모습, 사랑의 모습 나타낼 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

오늘 이 아침에 우리가 회개해야 할 기도의 제목이 있다고 한다면, 우리가 하나님을 사랑한다고 말하면서도 이웃을 사랑하지 못했던 우리들의 허물들을 회개하면서 “하나님 용서해 주옵소서” 우리 주님께서 십자가에 못 박히신 것이 무엇인가, 바로 그 죄 때문에, 우리의 그 악한 모습 때문에 주님께서 십자가를 지셨다고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 “주님 저희들에게 사랑의 마음을 허락하여 주옵소서” 기도하며 엎드려야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 왜 우리 주님께서는 원수까지 사랑하라고 말씀하십니까? 그것은 바로 우리 주님께서 우리들을 사랑해 주셨기 때문이에요.

하나님을 모른다고 하고 하나님을 배반해 버렸던 우리들, 하나님의 뜻대로 살지 않았다고 그렇게 악한 길로 갔던 우리들까지, 원수 된 우리까지 사랑하셔서 십자가를 지신 그 주님의 은혜와 사랑을 오늘도 기억하면서, 오늘 하나님 앞에 엎드려 기도하는 가운데 “주님 사랑으로 대할 수 있게 해 주옵소서” 우리들의 마음 가운데 악한 마음이 아니라 죄악의 마음이 아니라 무시하는 마음이 아니라 사랑의 손길을 내밀 수 있게 해 주옵소서 기도하는 가운데 이번 고난 주간을 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Love as the Ultimate Command: Loving God by Loving Your Neighbor

After Jesus overturned the tables of the money changers in the temple on the Monday of Passion Week, He went to Bethany that night and stayed there. It is a village east of Jerusalem. At that time, many pilgrims visited Jerusalem, but since it was a small place where everyone could not stay, people would often go to nearby villages and return the next day. Jesus did the same. What happened on Tuesday? Seeing a fig tree with no fruit but only lush leaves, He declared that it would never bear fruit again. This vividly reveals the state of the Jews at that time.

They were performing many spiritual actions and showing religious passion, but they were living a meaningless religious life without true faith. By showing them this, Jesus delivered God’s word, vividly demonstrating that if they continued in this state, they would inevitably face judgment. Jesus came to Jerusalem on this Tuesday and taught many lessons. Because of what happened the day before, people questioned and argued with Him, making this Tuesday a day when Jesus gave many profound teachings. If the numerous messages He shared had a single focus, it was the message of the end times. He gave teachings about the last days. The message concerning the end is not a message about the future, but rather a message about the present—how we should live here today.

It is not a concern for the future—wondering exactly when the end times or that final day will be—but a teaching focused on what I must do here and now before God’s inevitable judgment arrives. These messages about the end focus on how we can live like the five wise virgins, or how we can live like the servants entrusted with five talents or two talents. How should we live today? If there is an end, and all of us must face an end—whether it is an individual end or a cosmic end—how should we live while we still have an opportunity, while we are still alive? I believe today’s word is exactly that message. Jesus spoke these words:

Matthew 22:37–40 (ESV): “And he said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.’” We must live according to God’s Word, and He said that the summary of that Word is found in these two teachings: love for God and love for neighbor. First, what does it mean to love God? If we must love God, what constitutes loving Him? Is it loving Him by attending many worship services? No. Of course, we must worship often and it is only right to do so, but merely attending many services is not the method of loving God. We cannot say that doing many religious acts is the only way to love God.

Rather, to the Jews who showed such an appearance, God even said, “Do not bring your sacrifices anymore; do not worship anymore.” I pray in the name of the Lord that you remember the core of loving God is obeying His Word. Whose voice should we listen to? We must not listen to the voice of Satan, who tempts and goads us to do evil, but remember that loving God means hearing His Word and living in obedience to it. 1 John 5:3 (ESV) records: “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.” What is the love of God? The book of 1 John teaches that it is keeping His commandments, His words. And what is the core of God’s Word?

The core of God’s Word is loving your brothers and loving your neighbor. We must remember that love for God and love for neighbor are not two separate, distinct teachings. It is not that love for God is the most important and love for neighbor just follows as a leftover. In fact, the Bible teaches that love for God must be manifested through love for our neighbors and love for people; only then is it true love for God. The Bible teaches that if we do not love our neighbor, we do not love God. 1 John 4:20 (ESV) records: “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.” On the last day, God will judge us.

“Why did you ignore me when I was hungry? Why did you not look after me when I was sick? Why did you not visit me when I was in prison?” Hearing the Lord’s message of judgment—that what you did not do for people, you did not do for God, and what you did for people, you did for God—I pray in the name of the Lord that this morning may be a time when we prostrate ourselves before the Lord, repenting for the ways we claimed to love Him but did not actually love Him in our lives. What is true religion? James 1:27 (ESV) says: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” Satan constantly goads our hearts, telling us to hate, to resent, to seek revenge, and to ignore “those bad people.”

But God wants us to love. To what extent must we love? Even our enemies. Loving even the enemies who trouble us, ignore us, and cause us pain is what God desires of us. I pray in the name of the Lord that you believe that loving God and loving your neighbor is truly loving God, living according to His will, and is the way we should live today to prepare for the end times. How should we love? We must be patient. We must endure and be patient even when things make us angry or distressed; we must be patient even when there are words we want to blurt out. Even when our hearts are uncomfortable or in pain, we must endure. Patiently bearing and enduring is loving. And how else do we love? We must show kindness.

We must show a heart that helps others, acts with kindness, and bestows grace with a heart of love, rather than doing evil. We should not look at people with envy or jealousy—hating those who seem to do well or being jealous of those who are successful—but rather look at our neighbors with a loving heart, just as a grandfather or grandmother looks at their grandchildren with eyes of love. I pray in the name of the Lord that we do not act rudely or treat others carelessly, ignoring or despising those who seem “less” than us or lacking in some way, but rather manifest a heart of faith and love that embraces and cares for them with eyes of love.

If there is a prayer topic for us to repent this morning, let us repent for our shortcomings in failing to love our neighbors while claiming to love God, crying out, “God, please forgive us.” Remembering that our Lord was nailed to the cross precisely because of those sins and our wicked nature, I believe we must prostrate ourselves and pray, “Lord, grant us a heart of love.” Why does our Lord tell us to love even our enemies? It is because our Lord first loved us.

Remembering today the grace and love of the Lord who bore the cross for us—those who claimed not to know God, betrayed Him, and walked wicked paths away from His will—let us pray prostrate before God. “Lord, let us treat others with love.” As we pray that our hearts may not be full of wickedness, sin, or contempt, but that we may reach out with a hand of love, I pray in the name of the Lord that we all triumph through faith during this Passion Week.
