생명의 식탁(마 26:26-30)

지난번에 남성 야유회를 간 적이 있는데요. 그때 나왔던 질문 가운데 하나가 “지금까지 갔던 식당 가운데서 정말 좋았던 식당이 어디냐” 서로 이야기하는 시간이 있었습니다. 안타깝게도 저한테는 안 물어봐서 대답할 기회를 놓쳤는데요. 여러분들은 지금까지 살아오면서 어떤 음식이 제일 인상에 남으셨습니까? 어떠한 음식이 가장 기억에 남으시는 그런 식사였다고 생각이 되십니까? 아마 군대를 다녀오신 분이 있다면 군 생활하면서 정말 힘들고 어렵고 훈련 끝에 먹게 된 라면 한 그릇, 그것을 기억하시는 분이 있을 수 있겠고요. 아니면 저 6.25 때 정말 힘들게 피난을 오신 분들이 있었다고 한다면 그때 먹었던 주먹밥 하나가 아마 지금도 기억에 생생하게 남아 있을는지 모르겠습니다. 그런데 이스라엘 민족에게 있어서 가장 기억에 남는 식사가 있었다고 한다면 유월절 만찬이었습니다.

애굽 땅에서 수백 년 동안 종살이하던 이스라엘 민족을 향해서 하나님께서는 어느 날 나타나셔서 놀라운 말씀을 해 주셨습니다. “너희가 내일이면 해방될 거다.” 노예 생활은 이제 끝나게 될 것이고 이제는 자유의 땅으로, 하나님께서 약속해 주셨던 약속의 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅 저 가나안 땅으로 가게 될 것이라는 그런 어마어마한 약속을 들었고요. 그때 하나님께서 하신 말씀이 무엇이냐 하면, “그런데 오늘 밤에 죽음의 사자가 온 애굽 땅을 돌아다니면서 모든 처음 난 것들이 다 죽을 거라” 말씀하셨습니다. 저 바로 왕의 첫째 아들 장자로부터 시작해서 저 짐승의 초태생에 이르기까지 모든 처음 난 것들은 다 죽게 되는 그런 엄청난 끔찍한 사건이 있게 될 텐데, 거기서 우리 가정을 보호하기 위해서는 양 한 마리를 잡아서 그 양의 피를 대문에 바르고 그 양을 함께 온 가족이 먹고 또한 나갈 준비를 해라.

해방될 준비를 해라. 그래서 마치 5분 대기조처럼 옷을 갖추어 입고 그래서 “지금 가라” 하면 바로 떠날 수 있도록 긴박한 상황에서 유월절 음식을 먹으라고 말씀해 주셨습니다. 빵을 구울 때 어떻게 구울 것인가? 누룩을 넣어서 반죽을 부풀리고 할 시간이 없으니 그냥 반죽이 없이 부풀리지 말고 그냥 밀가루를 구워서 누룩을 넣지 않은 상태로 구워서 그 빵으로 먹고 그래서 떠나라고 하는 그런 엄청난 놀라운 소식을 알려주셨는데요. 그래서 이스라엘 민족이 구원을 받게 된 그 유월절 만찬, 어쩌면 이스라엘 민족에게 있어서 가장 기억에 남는 식사였을 겁니다. 그 이후로 그때 그 사건을 늘 기억하면서 매년 유월절을 지킨 것이죠. 이맘때쯤이 유월절에 해당하는 기간이라고 하겠습니다. 해마다 유월절이 되면 이스라엘 민족은 그때 있었던 일들을 다시 한 번 상기하고 다시 한 번 기념하고 축하하면서 유월절 만찬을 먹으며 “하나님이 우리를 이렇게 구원하셨구나” 또 기억하며 또 기억하는 식사가 유월절 만찬이었습니다.

그런 유월절 절기를 지키면서 하나님의 은혜를 늘 기억하신 것이죠. 그런데 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으시기 바로 전날, 예수님께서 제자들과 함께 음식을 나눈 음식이 바로 유월절 만찬이었습니다. 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽게 되는 그 일이 바로 유월절 기간에 일어난 것인데요. 그 유월절 만찬을 제자들과 함께 먹고 마시면서 예수님과 대화하고 예수님께서 영적인 교훈을 가르쳐 주신 이야기가 오늘 본문에 나와 있는 말씀입니다. 오늘 읽은 말씀 마태복음 26장 26절에서부터 28절 말씀에 예수님께서 이런 말씀을 해 주셨습니다. **“그들이 먹을 때에 예수께서 떡을 가지사 축복하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주시며 이르시되 받아서 먹으라 이것은 내 몸이니라 하시고 또 잔을 가지사 감사 기도 하시고 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 너희가 이것을 다 마시라 이것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 바 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라”**라고 말씀해 주신 것이죠.

그 유월절 음식인 빵과 유월절 음식인 그 포도주를 함께 나누면서 예수님께서 말씀해 주시는 겁니다. 빵을 주시면서 말씀하시는 거죠. “이걸 받아 먹으라” 하시면서 “이것이 내 몸이라” 말씀하셨어요. 포도주를 나눠주면서 “이것이 내 피다. 너희를 위하여 흘리는 나의 피다” 그렇게 말씀해 주셨는데요. 그러니까 그 빵과 포도주가 예수님의 몸과 피로 변한 것일까요, 안 변한 것일까요? 내 몸이다 내 피다 그랬으니까 변한 게 아닙니다. 지금까지 기독교 역사를 보면 예수님의 이 말을 오해해서 예수님께서 “이것이 내 몸이라” 하셨으니까 빵이 예수님의 몸으로 변화되었고 “이것이 내 피라” 하셨으니까 포도주가 예수님의 피로 변한 것이라고 오해한 기간이 있었고, 지금도 천주교에서는 그렇게 알고 가르치고 있지만 사실은 빵이 예수님의 살로 변하거나 포도주가 예수님의 피로 변한 것은 아니라고 하겠습니다. 그런데 예수님께서 이렇게 “이것이 내 몸이다, 이것이 내 피다” 그렇게 말씀해 주시는 이유가 무엇이겠습니까?

그것은 시청각을 통해서 영적인 교훈을 해 주시기 위한 것이죠. 예수님께서 말씀하시기를 “너희가 빵을 먹어야 살아갈 수 있듯이, 빵과 포도주를 먹고 마시며 음식을 섭취해야 우리의 육신이 건강해져서 우리의 육신이 활력을 얻어서 생활할 수 있듯이, 우리의 인생이 어떻게 살 수 있는가, 우리의 영이 어떻게 살 수 있는가? 너희는 나를 받아들여야 한다.” 내가 흘리는 피, 내가 너희에게 주는 그 나의 몸, 십자가 위에서 내가 너희를 위하여 흘려주는 그 피와 죽음이 바로 너희들을 살리는 것이고, 나의 죽음으로 인해서 너희가 살아나게 될 거다, 그것을 말씀해 주시기 위해서 빵과 포도주를 가지고 비유적으로 말씀해 주신 것이라고 보아야 할 것입니다. 예수님께서 이런 시청각 자료를 통해서 우리들이, 우리가 영적으로 사는 것이 예수님을 받아들이고 예수님을 믿음으로 산다는 것을 가르쳐 주신 것이라고 할 수가 있겠는데요.

우리는 이런 일들을 통해 성찬 예식에 참여하면서 “예수님께서 우리를 위해서 죽으셨구나.” 십자가에서의 죽음이 그냥 죽으심이 아니라 사실은 나를 위한 죽음이고, 십자가에서 흘려준 그 피가 그냥 흘려준 피가 아니라 사실은 우리를 위해서 흘려주신 예수님의 희생이었다는 사실을 기억하면서, 예수님을 믿고 신뢰하는 가운데 주님을 나의 주, 나의 하나님으로 고백하는 가운데 우리가 구원을 얻고 생명을 얻게 되는 줄로 믿습니다. 따라서 우리가 예수님의 이 말씀을 보면서 예수님께서 십자가에서 돌아가신 것이 바로 나를 위해서 죽으셨구나 하는 사실을 다시 한 번 기억해야 하는 것입니다.

예수님께서 그냥 돌아가신 것이 아니라 바로 우리를 살리시기 위해서, 우리를 영적으로 살려내기 위해서, 마치 배고픈 사람에게 빵을 주고 배고픈 사람에게 음료수를 주면 그것을 먹고 그 사람이 기운을 차리고 생명을 얻게 되듯이, 예수님을 우리가 받았기 때문에 예수님의 생명을 우리가 받아서 살 수 있다는 사실을 믿고 신뢰하며 영생의 축복을 우리 모두가 누려야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 여기에 아주 좋은 물건이 있다고 합시다. 여기에 좋은 재료가 있다고 합시다. 여기에 좋은 것들이 있다고 합시다. 그럴 때 그것을 외면해 버리면 어떻게 됩니까? 외면해 버리면 아무런 유익이 없는 것이죠. 예를 들어서 지금 여기에 아주 훌륭한 발명품이 있습니다. 이 발명품을 가지고 사용하면 엄청난 효과를 누릴 수 있습니다. 세계적인 발명품이 있습니다. 그런데 내가 그것을 사용하지 않는다고 하면 나와는 아무런 상관이 없는 발명품이 되는 것이죠. 요즘 여러분들은 무엇을 신기하게 사용하고 계십니까?

저는 AI를 신기하게 사용하고 있습니다. AI를 사용하는데 얼마나 좋은지 몰라요. 많은 것들이 편리해졌고 마치 어떤 기분이 드냐 하면 마치 유능한 비서를 내 옆에 두고 있는 것 같아요. 내가 원하는 것을 다 이야기해 주면 다 해결해 주고 다 알려주고, 내가 원하는 속 시원한 답들을 다 얘기해 주니까 얼마나 좋은지 몰라요. 그런데 그런 아무리 좋은 것들이 발명됐다고 할지라도 전혀 관심이 없고 사용하지 않는다고 한다면 내게 유익이 없는 것이죠. 여기에 아주 기가 막힌 약이 있다고 합시다. 부작용도 없고 이 약을 복용하면 다이어트도 잘 되고 이 약을 복용하면 문제가 해결되고 하는 그런 약이 있다고 한다면, 그것을 사용하면 내가 유익을 얻을 수 있지만 그러나 그것을 전혀 상관하지 않는다고 한다면 아무 유익이 없듯이, 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으신 이 놀라운 은혜의 사건들을 우리가 보고만 있을 것이 아니라 “아, 예수님이 나의 주 나의 하나님이시구나” 믿어야 합니다.

“주님께서 십자가 위에서 피 흘려주신 그것이 바로 나를 위한 것이구나.” 우리가 믿고 고백하며 예수님을 나의 주 나의 하나님으로 고백하며 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 그런데 오늘 이 말씀 가운데 예수님께서 이 말씀을 하시면서 무슨 말씀을 하셨냐면 마태복음 26장 29절 말씀에서 이런 말씀을 해 주셨습니다. “그러나 너희에게 이르노니 내가 포도나무에서 난 것을 이제부터 내 아버지의 나라에서 새것으로 너희와 함께 마시는 날까지 마시지 아니하리라 하시니라” 예수님께서 포도나무에서 난 것을 다시는 마시지 않겠다는 말씀이 무슨 의미일까요? 성경을 읽으면서 이 말씀의 의미가 무엇인지 잘 이해가 되지 않아서 늘 숙제 가운데 하나였었는데요. 지난번에 ‘갈릴리 예수’라는 것을 보면서 “아, 그렇구나” 하는 것을 깨달았습니다. 그게 무엇이냐 하면 결혼의 배경으로 이해해야 한다는 거예요.

결혼의 장면, 한 총각이 있고 한 처녀가 있는데 그 총각이 처녀에게 다가가서 “나와 결혼해 줄래” 하면서 프로포즈를 하는 게 있는데요. 요즘은 프러포즈 어떻게 하십니까? 프러포즈를 잘 받아보셨습니까? 옛날에는 그런 것도 없이 결혼했죠. 그냥 했는데 요즘에는 다이아몬드 반지를 가지고 와서 반지를 내밉니다. 그러면서 “나와 결혼해 줄래” 하고 이야기를 하면 그 여성이 그 반지를 받아 들고서 반지를 받으면 어떻게 되나요? 결혼하는 거예요. 그런데 반지를 안 받고 돌려주면 어떻게 됩니까? 결혼을 못 하게 되는 거죠. 그게 바로 프러포즈의 과정이듯이 예수님 당시에 결혼은 어떻게 했는가, 포도주를 따라서 신부 될 사람에게 주면 그 신부가 포도주 잔을 받아 마시고 그 포도주 잔을 다시 채워서 남자에게 주면, 그러면 그것을 마시면서 두 사람이 서로 결혼하기로 약조하게 되는 풍습이 그 당시에 있었다고 해요.

그러니까 이 장면이 어떤 장면이냐 하면 예수님께서 우리 제자들을 보시면서 “내가 너희를 나의 신부로 삼겠다”고 하는 약속인 거죠. “내가 너와 결혼하겠다. 내가 너의 남편이 되어 주겠다”라고 약속하시는 것이고, 그리고 예수님께서 하시는 말씀이 무엇이냐 하면 “내가 다시는 포도나무 위에서 난 것을 마시지 않겠다.” 무슨 얘기예요? “다른 여자는 쳐다보지도 않겠다. 다른 여자에게는 내가 이런 것을 제안하지 않겠다. 너와만 결혼하겠다”라고 하는 그런 표현으로 이해해야 되는 것이죠. 그래서 예수님께서 제자들을 향해서 “내가 너희의 신랑이 되어 주겠다.” 신랑이 무엇입니까? 신부를 위해서, 사랑하는 자를 위해서 자신의 모든 것을 다 내어주듯이 주님께서 제자들에게 다 내어주며 우리의 신랑이 되어 주시겠다는 그런 약속으로 이해해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 그래서 예수님께서 이 성만찬을 하시면서 두 가지를 보여주시는 건데요.

하나는 예수님께서 십자가 위에서 죽으셔서 그 죽음이 그냥 죽음이 아니라 우리들을 살리기 위한, 많은 사람들을 구원하기 위한 생명의 제안으로서, 뿐만 아니라 자기 자신을 교회의 신랑으로, 우리 모두의 신랑으로 주시는 그 약속으로 보면서 이 말씀을 이해해야 할 것입니다. 오늘 우리는 성찬 예식에 참여하게 될 텐데요. 이 성찬 예식에 우리가 참여하면서 그 옛날 이스라엘 민족 그리고 열두 제자들이 주님과 성찬 예식을 함께하며 주님의 사랑을 깨달았듯이, 오늘 우리가 이 성찬 예식을 통해 하나님의 은혜를 체험하는 귀하고 복된 시간이 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 먼저 이 성찬 예식에 참여하면서 깨달아야 할 것이 있는데요. 제일 먼저 깨달아야 할 것이 있다면 예수님의 죽으심이 어떠한 죽음이었나… 그 죽으심이 어떤 죽음이었죠? 바로 나 때문에 죽으신 죽음이라는 것을 기억해야 됩니다.

나의 죄로 인해서, 내가 저질렀던 잘못으로 인해서 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박히셔야만 했었구나 하는 사실을 깨달으면서 우리가 하나님 앞에 회개할 필요가 있는 것이죠. 우리가 지은 어떤 죄가 있을까요? 아주 심각한 죄를 여러분들이 지으셨습니까? 살인죄를 혹시 지고 오신 분 계신가요? 아마 살인죄를 짓지 않았기 때문에 “나는 그렇게 죄가 없을 것이다” 생각하게 되겠지만 사실은 우리가 별거 아닌 것처럼 생각되는 그 죄가 사실은 주님을 십자가에 못 박은 거예요. 우리의 어떤 죄 때문에 예수님이 십자가에 못 박히셨습니까? 내가 참지 못하고 화를 냈던 바로 그 죄 때문에 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으신 거죠.

다른 사람들의 부족함을 이해하지 못하고 불평하며 원망하고 뒤에서 욕하고 했던 것들이 결국 예수님을 십자가에 못 박은 것이고, 내가 이기적으로 살고 탐욕적으로 살며 내 주변의 사람들에게 너그럽게 행하지 못했던 죄들이 바로 예수님을 십자가에 못 박을 수밖에 없었다는 사실을 기억하면서, 오늘 우리들이 하나님 앞에 지은 죄가 무엇인가 하나씩 하나씩 살펴보며 회개해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 사탄은 우리들을 향해서 늘 속삭입니다. “그거 별거 아니야. 다른 사람들도 다 하는 거야. 이런 상황에서 네가 가만히 있으면 너는 바보가 돼. 네가 옳으려면 너는 행동을 해야 돼. 네 권리야” 말하면서 우리를 자꾸만 부추기는 것이죠. 그런데 이러한 사탄의 속삭임에 우리가 속아 넘어가서는 안 됩니다. 왜냐하면 바로 그 죄 때문에 예수님께서 십자가 위에서 나 때문에 돌아가셔야만 했기 때문이에요. 주님께서 우리들에게 말씀해 주신 것이 무엇입니까?

아주 큰 죄를 지어야만 그래야 죄라고 말씀하신 것이 아니라 우리의 무엇이 죄가 된다는 거예요? 아주 작은 것이 살인죄와 같다. 마태복음 5장 21절에서부터 22절의 말씀에 보면 이렇게 기록하고 있습니다. “옛 사람에게 말한 바 살인하지 말라 누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 나는 너희에게 이르노니 형제에게 노하는 자마다 심판을 받게 되고 형제에 대하여 라가라 하는 자는 공회에 잡혀가게 되고 미련한 놈이라 하는 자는 지옥 불에 들어가게 되리라” ‘라가’가 뭐죠? “이 바보야, 멍청이야” 하는 거예요. 살인죄를 지어야만 큰 죄가 되는 것이 아니라 우리가 했던 말 한마디로 인해서 저기서는 눈물짓고 있는 거예요.

죽을 것 같은 상황에 내몰리게 되는 것이고, 우리는 그냥 지나가는 소리로 툭 던진 말이고 내가 불편해서 내뱉은 말인데, 그 말을 들은 사람들이 얼마나 삶이 무너지고 생활이 무너지고 완전히 박살 날 것만 같고 의지가 꺾여버리는 그런 심각한 죄를 저지른 줄도 모르고 “나는 별거 아니다”라고 생각하면서 나만 괜찮다고 생각하면 되는 것이 아니라, 사실은 우리들의 말 한마디, 우리들의 서투른 잘못된 그런 행동 하나하나가 사실은 우리 형제자매들에게 엄청난 고통과 아픔을 주는 엄격한 그런 죄였을 뿐만 아니라, 사실은 그 죄가 우리 주님을 십자가에 못 박을 수밖에 없었다는 사실을 기억하면서 오늘 하나님 앞에 회개하며 나아가야 될 줄로 믿습니다.

로마서 1장에 보면 여러 가지 죄들에 대해서 나열하고 있는데, 그 죄들 가운데 보면 아주 심각한 죄도 있지만 그냥 수군수군거리는 죄도 포함하고 있어요. “나는 그냥 재미 삼아서 이야기했고 그냥 떠드는 말이었는데” 사실은 그 죄가 엄청나게 큰 죄였다는 사실을 기억하면서 우리의 죄가 얼마나 무서운 것이었는가, 그 사실을 기억하며 하나님 앞에 회개해 나가는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 두 번째로 우리가 기억할 것이 있다면, 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님의 은혜가 얼마나 큰가… 나와 같은 죄인을 그냥 심판해 버리고 끝낸 것이 아니라 예수님을 십자가에 내어주시고 그 피로 우리의 죄를 다 말갛게 씻기시며 하나님의 은혜를 부어주신 그 은혜 때문에 우리가 산다는 이 두 가지 사실을 기억하면서 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 어제 제가 한 동영상을 봤는데요.

동영상을 보는 가운데 이국종 교수의 동영상이었습니다. 이국종 교수가 누군지는 아시죠? 제 동생은 아닙니다. 이 이국종 교수가 외상외과 교수로서, 의사로서 수많은 환자들을 많이 치료해 준 아주 유명한 의사 중에 한 분인데요. 그분의 스토리가 동영상에 나와서 한 번 본 적이 있는데 거기 방송 가운데 출연한 사람을 보니까 제가 보던 사람이에요. 제가 아는 사람이에요. 누구냐 하면 제 대학교 동창 선교사님의 사모님과 아들이 출연한 거예요. 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 내가 아는 사람이 나오다니… 그게 누군 줄 아십니까? 우리 교회에서 후원하고 있는 임중식 선교사님의 사모님과 아들이에요. 사진 한번 볼까요? 사모님하고 그 옆에 있는 아들이 임건희라고 아들인데, 그다음 사진 보면 우리 임중식 선교사님, 태국 선교사님. 지난번에 우리 교회 청년들이 태국으로 선교 갔을 때 만났던 그 선교사님인데 그 선교사님 그 가정이 딱 나와서 있었는데요.

사실 그 아들 임건희가 제가 대구에 있을 때 포항에 있는 해병대에서 훈련을 하다가 얼굴을 완전히 다친 그런 큰 사고가 한 번 일어났습니다. 탱크의 프로펠러 같은 것에, 바람을 내보내는 거기에 옷이 딸려 들어가면서 얼굴이 완전히 짓이겨지는 엄청난 큰 사고를 당했습니다. 피가 낭자하게 흐르고 아주 긴박한 상황 가운데서 그 소식을 듣고 제가 빨리 경북대 병원에 왔다고 해서 가봤는데, 얼굴을 완전히 챙겨매고 완전히 긴박한 상황 가운데 있는데 이 아이를 어떻게 살릴 수 있는가… 시간이 얼마 남지 않은 거예요. 이 아이를 어떻게 살릴 수 있는가, “여기서는 안 되고 서울로 가야 된다” 해서 서울로 연락을 해 보는데 그 어느 병원에서도 받아주겠다고 하는 병원이 없는 겁니다. 그런데 어디서 받아줬는가, 이국종 교수 아주대 병원에서 받아준 거야. 거기까지만 알고 있었는데 이번 동영상을 보니까 그때 받아주면서 어떻게 했는가, 헬기를 보냈대요.

시간이 촉급하니까 헬기를 보내서 그 친구를 서울로, 아주대 병원으로 데리고 가서 거기서 치료를 해서 살렸는데 그것만 해도 대단한데 방송을 듣다 보니까 무슨 얘기가 나오냐면 그 헬기에 이국종 교수가 같이 타고 같이 내려갔다는 거예요. 환자 곁에 빨리 가야 살릴 수 있기 때문에 의사가 와서 가만히 앉아서 기다리고 있는 것이 아니라, 그 한 친구 젊은이를 살리기 위해서 그 헬기에 타고 가서 그 친구를 데려오면서 치료하면서 올라와서… 지금은 그래도 얼굴 사진 보니까 괜찮게 생겼죠? 그렇게 낫게 되었다는 이야기를 보면서 참 많은 감동을 받았습니다. 그런데 가만히 생각해 보니까 바로 그게 우리 주님께서 하신 일이에요.

우리 주님께서 그냥 저 하늘에만 계신 것이 아니라, 바로 우리를 살리시기 위해서 우리의 죄와 우리의 허물로 인해서 영원히 죽을 수밖에 없는 우리를 위해서 자신의 살을 내어주시고 피를 내어주시기 위해서 주님께서 친히 이 땅 가운데 오시고, 친히 우리들에게 자신의 생명을 내어주시고 피를 내어주셔서 우리를 구원해 주신 그 놀라운 은혜와 사랑 때문에 오늘 우리가 구원을 받고 영생을 얻게 되는 줄로 믿습니다. 오늘 이 성찬 예식에 참여하면서 오늘 그 은혜와 사랑을 다시 한 번 기억하고, 이제는 주님을 나의 주, 나의 하나님으로 받아들여서 “이제는 주님의 뜻에 따라 순종하며 살겠습니다” 믿음의 고백과 결단이 있는 귀하고 복된 시간 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

The Most Memorable Feast: From the Passover to the Lord’s Supper

I went on a men’s retreat recently. One of the questions that came up during our time together was, “Of all the restaurants you’ve ever visited, which one was truly the best?” Unfortunately, they didn’t ask me, so I missed my chance to answer. What about you? Looking back on your life, which food has left the deepest impression on you? Which meal stands out as the most memorable? Those who served in the military might remember a single bowl of ramen eaten after an incredibly grueling training session. Or, for those who lived through the hardships of the Korean War, perhaps a single rice ball eaten during the evacuation remains vivid in your memory even now. However, for the people of Israel, the most memorable meal was the Passover supper.

One day, God appeared to the people of Israel, who had been enslaved in the land of Egypt for hundreds of years, and gave them an amazing word: “By tomorrow, you will be liberated.” He promised them that their life of slavery would end and they would go to a land of freedom—the Promised Land flowing with milk and honey, the land of Canaan. Along with this immense promise, God said, “Tonight, the messenger of death will go throughout the land of Egypt, and every firstborn shall die.” From the firstborn son of Pharaoh to the firstborn of the livestock, a terrifying event was to take place where every firstborn would perish. To protect your household, God instructed them to slaughter a lamb, apply its blood to the doorposts, eat that lamb together as a family, and prepare to leave.

He told them to prepare for liberation. Like a five-minute rapid response team, they were told to eat the Passover meal in a state of urgency, dressed and ready to depart the moment the command “Go now” was given. How were they to bake the bread? Since there was no time to add leaven and let the dough rise, they were told to bake flour without leaven and eat it before leaving. This was the startling and marvelous news they received. Thus, the Passover supper, through which the Israelites were saved, was likely the most memorable meal in their history. Ever since then, they have kept the Passover every year to remember that event. This current season corresponds to the time of Passover. Every year at Passover, the people of Israel recall what happened, commemorating and celebrating with the Passover supper, remembering again and again, “This is how God saved us.”

By observing the Passover, they continually remembered God’s grace. Now, on the night before Jesus was crucified, the meal He shared with His disciples was this very Passover supper. The crucifixion of Jesus took place during the Passover season. The passage we read today tells the story of Jesus eating and drinking this Passover meal with His disciples, conversing with them, and teaching them spiritual lessons. In Matthew 26:26–28 (ESV), Jesus spoke these words:

“Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’”

While sharing the Passover bread and wine, Jesus spoke to them. Giving them the bread, He said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Sharing the wine, He said, “This is my blood… poured out for you.” Now, did that bread and wine literally turn into Jesus’ body and blood, or not? Even though He said “This is my body” and “This is my blood,” they did not physically change. Throughout Christian history, there was a period when these words were misunderstood to mean the bread literally became His flesh and the wine literally became His blood. The Catholic Church still teaches this today. However, we believe the bread does not turn into His flesh, nor the wine into His blood. So, why did Jesus say, “This is my body, this is my blood”?

He did this to provide a spiritual lesson through a visual aid. Jesus was saying, “Just as you must eat bread to live—just as your physical body becomes healthy and gains energy by consuming food and drink—how can your soul live? You must receive Me.” The blood I shed, the body I give you, the death and blood on the cross are what save you. You will live because of My death. He used the bread and wine as a metaphor to teach this. Through this visual aid, Jesus taught us that living spiritually means receiving Him and living by faith in Him.

Through this, as we participate in the Holy Communion, we remember: “Jesus died for us.” We remember that His death on the cross was not just a random death, but a death for me. The blood shed there was not just blood, but the sacrifice of Jesus for our sake. As we believe in and trust Jesus, confessing Him as my Lord and my God, I believe we obtain salvation and life. Therefore, looking at these words, we must remember once again that Jesus died on the cross specifically for me.

Jesus did not die for no reason; He died to save us—to give us spiritual life. Just as a hungry person gains strength and life after being given bread and a drink, we must believe and trust that we live because we have received the life of Jesus. Let us all enjoy the blessing of eternal life. Suppose there is a very good item here. Suppose there are excellent materials or great things right here. What happens if you ignore them? If you ignore them, there is no benefit. For example, if there is a world-class invention here that offers incredible effects if used, but I refuse to use it, that invention has nothing to do with me. What amazing things are you using lately?

I have been using AI, and it’s fascinating. I find it incredibly useful. Many things have become convenient; it feels like having a highly capable secretary by my side. I tell it what I want, and it solves it, informs me, and gives me the refreshing answers I need. However, no matter how great an invention is, if you have no interest and don’t use it, it is of no benefit to you. Suppose there is a miracle drug here. It has no side effects, helps with weight loss, and solves health problems. If you take it, you benefit; but if you have nothing to do with it, it is useless. Similarly, we shouldn’t just be spectators to the marvelous event of grace that is Jesus’ crucifixion. We must believe: “Ah, Jesus is my Lord and my God.”

We must believe and confess, “The blood shed on the cross was for me.” I pray in the name of the Lord that we all confess Jesus as my Lord and my God and triumph through faith. Now, in this passage, Jesus also said something else in Matthew 26:29 (ESV): “I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” What does it mean when Jesus says He will not drink of the fruit of the vine again? While reading the Bible, the meaning of this was always a “homework” assignment for me because I didn’t fully understand it. Recently, while watching something titled Galilean Jesus, I realized, “Ah, that’s it!” It means we must understand this within the context of a wedding.

Imagine a wedding scene. A young man approaches a young woman and proposes, “Will you marry me?” How do people propose these days? Have you received a good proposal? In the old days, people often got married without one. But nowadays, men bring a diamond ring and offer it. If the woman accepts the ring, what happens? They are getting married. But if she refuses and returns the ring, the marriage doesn’t happen. Just as that is the process of a proposal, at the time of Jesus, there was a custom where a man would pour wine and give it to his bride-to-be. If she drank the cup and then refilled it for him, and he drank it, they were officially betrothed.

So, this scene is Jesus looking at His disciples and making a promise: “I will take you as My bride.” He is promising, “I will marry you. I will be your husband.” And when Jesus says, “I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine,” what is He saying? It means, “I will not even look at another woman. I will not propose this to anyone else. I will marry only you.” It should be understood as an expression of exclusive commitment. Jesus is saying to His disciples, “I will be your Bridegroom.” What does a bridegroom do? Just as a groom gives his everything for his bride, for the one he loves, we must understand this as a promise that the Lord will give His everything for us and be our Bridegroom. Thus, in the Last Supper, Jesus is showing two things:

First, that His death on the cross is a proposal of life to save many people; and second, the promise of giving Himself as the Bridegroom of the Church, the Bridegroom for us all. Today, we are about to participate in the Holy Communion. Just as the ancient Israelites and the twelve disciples realized the Lord’s love through the supper, I pray in the name of the Lord that this will be a precious and blessed time for us to experience God’s grace. Before participating, there is something we must realize. First, we must remember what kind of death Jesus’ death was. What kind of death was it? We must remember that He died because of me.

Realizing that Jesus had to be nailed to the cross because of my sins and the wrongs I committed, we need to repent before God. What kind of sins might we have? Have you committed a “very serious” sin? Is there anyone here who has committed murder? Since you haven’t committed murder, you might think, “I don’t have that much sin.” But in reality, the sins we consider “no big deal” are what nailed the Lord to the cross. Because of which of our sins was Jesus crucified? He was crucified because of the very sin of me losing my temper and getting angry.

It was our complaining, resenting, and bad-mouthing others behind their backs because we couldn’t understand their shortcomings that ultimately nailed Jesus to the cross. Remembering that our sins of living selfishly and greedily, and not acting generously toward those around us, are what made the crucifixion necessary, we must examine our sins one by one and repent before God. Satan always whispers to us, “It’s no big deal. Everyone does it. If you stay quiet in this situation, you’re a fool. If you want to be right, you must act. It’s your right.” He constantly goads us. But we must not be deceived by these whispers of Satan. This is because Jesus had to die on the cross specifically because of me for those very sins. What did the Lord tell us?

He didn’t say that only massive crimes are considered sins; rather, what does He say is a sin? Even the smallest thing is like murder. Matthew 5:21–22 (ESV) records:

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.”

What is “insulting”? It’s calling someone “You fool” or “You’re stupid.” It’s not only a big crime if you commit murder; someone else might be weeping because of a single word we said. We drive them toward a situation where they feel like they might die. To us, it was just a passing remark or a word blurted out because we were uncomfortable; but we don’t realize how much we have wrecked someone’s life, broken their will, and committed a grave sin. We cannot simply think, “I’m fine as long as I’m okay.” In reality, our single words and our clumsy, wrong actions were not only severe sins that caused immense pain to our brothers and sisters, but they were also the sins that made it necessary for our Lord to be crucified. Remembering this, we must move forward in repentance before God.

Romans chapter 1 lists various sins, and among them, it includes not only severe crimes but also the sin of gossiping. Remembering that even the sins we committed for “fun” or as “just talk” were actually immense, and realizing how terrifying our sins were, I pray in the name of the Lord that we all move toward repenting before God. Second, we must remember: despite all this, how great is God’s grace! He didn’t just judge and end a sinner like me, but He gave Jesus to the cross, washed our sins white as snow with that blood, and poured out His grace. Remembering these two facts—that we live because of His grace—I pray in the name of the Lord that we all triumph through faith. I saw a video yesterday.

It was a video of Professor Lee Guk-jong. You know who he is, right? (He’s not my younger brother). Professor Lee is a very famous surgeon, a trauma specialist who has treated countless patients. His story appeared in a video, and as I watched, I recognized someone. I saw someone I knew! It was the wife and son of a missionary who was my college classmate. I was so surprised to see someone I knew on screen. Do you know who they are? They are the wife and son of Missionary Lim Jung-shik, whom our church supports. Shall we look at a photo? That’s the wife, and next to her is the son, Lim Geon-hee. In the next photo, there is Missionary Lim Jung-shik, our missionary to Thailand. He is the one our church youth met when they went on a mission trip to Thailand. That missionary’s family appeared on the screen.

Actually, when that son, Geon-hee, was training in the Marines in Pohang (while I was in Daegu), he had a major accident where his face was completely injured. His clothes got caught in something like a tank propeller or a ventilation fan, and he suffered a horrific accident where his face was completely crushed. It was a dire situation with blood flowing everywhere. When I heard the news, I rushed to Kyungpook National University Hospital. His face was completely bandaged, and he was in a critical state. How could this child be saved? There was very little time left. They said, “It can’t be done here; he must go to Seoul.” They contacted hospitals in Seoul, but no hospital would agree to take him. But one place accepted him: Professor Lee Guk-jong’s Ajou University Hospital. I only knew that much, but watching this video, I learned what happened next. When they accepted him, they sent a helicopter.

Because time was of the essence, they sent a helicopter to bring him to Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, where he was treated and saved. That in itself is amazing, but as I listened to the broadcast, it turns out Professor Lee Guk-jong personally flew down in that helicopter. Because a patient must be reached quickly to be saved, the doctor didn’t just sit and wait. To save that one young man, he boarded the helicopter, treated him while bringing him up… and looking at his photo now, he looks quite handsome, doesn’t he? I was deeply moved seeing the story of how he was healed. But thinking about it quietly, that is exactly what our Lord did.

Our Lord did not simply stay in heaven. To save us—who were bound to die eternally because of our sins and transgressions—He personally came to this earth to give His flesh and His blood. Because of that marvelous grace and love through which He personally gave us His life and blood to redeem us, I believe we obtain salvation and eternal life. As we participate in this Holy Communion today, let us remember that grace and love once more. Receiving the Lord as my Lord and my God, may this be a precious and blessed time of confession and resolution: “From now on, I will live in obedience to the Lord’s will.” I pray this in the name of the Lord.
