“굿 잡(Good job), 잘했다.
The Power of a Grateful Heart
The Lord Is Good, and His Love Endures Forever
Scripture: Psalm 118:1–4
Today, we are going to meditate on the Word of God in Psalm 118. Verse 1 says:
“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His steadfast love endures forever.”
The psalmist tells us to give thanks to the Lord.
How do you feel when you hear these words? When you hear this encouragement, this exhortation directed toward us—to give thanks to the Lord—what thoughts come to your mind?
Perhaps this expression sounds a little unusual to us. Why? Because we tend to think of gratitude as a kind of emotion. And emotions are not usually something we can control or produce at will. They arise spontaneously in response to what happens to us.
If there are things in our lives for which we are thankful, gratitude will naturally arise in our hearts, even without anyone telling us to be thankful. When something joyful or exciting happens, happiness naturally wells up within us.
That is how emotions work, isn’t it? When we experience something astonishing, we feel surprised. When we encounter something frightening, fear naturally arises within us. And when we experience something sad or painful, we become discouraged, depressed, and overwhelmed. These are all natural responses of our emotions.
In the same way, when we experience joyful and pleasant things in life, happiness and gratitude can arise naturally, even without anyone telling us to feel that way.
And yet, the Bible encourages us to give thanks. In fact, it commands us to be thankful.
Why does the Bible command us to give thanks?
The reason is that our lives do not consist only of pleasant, joyful, and thankful moments. Sometimes we encounter situations that leave us completely discouraged. At other times, we face circumstances that are deeply painful and difficult.
Nevertheless, God teaches us not simply to live according to our emotions. Even when life is hard, even when circumstances are painful, we are called to give thanks intentionally and deliberately. We must make a conscious decision to be thankful.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, the Bible teaches us:
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
In other words, we are not to give thanks only when good things happen. We are to give thanks in all circumstances, at every moment, throughout our lives. This is the consistent teaching of Scripture.
Then how can we become thankful people? How can we obey God’s command to give thanks?
Look at Psalm 118:2–4:
“Let Israel say, ‘His steadfast love endures forever.’
Let the house of Aaron say, ‘His steadfast love endures forever.’
Let those who fear the LORD say, ‘His steadfast love endures forever.’”
Above all, we are called to give thanks. But how should we do that?
The psalmist tells us to speak. We are to declare, “His steadfast love endures forever.” We are encouraged to express our gratitude for God’s grace through our words.
We need to remember how important it is to speak these words of gratitude. Why? Because although our words express what is in our hearts, those very words also shape who we become.
When we take what is in our hearts and express it through words, the process does not simply end there. Our words begin to change us.
Suppose we begin to complain.
Imagine that we have some frustration or pain in our hearts, and we begin to complain, grumble, criticize, and even curse. What happens as a result?
If we were to examine the condition of our hearts carefully, we would discover that not everything in our hearts is unpleasant. Not every part of our lives is filled with pain.
What percentage of your heart is actually troubled?
For some people, perhaps only 10 percent of their hearts is troubled. For others, it may be 30 percent. For some, perhaps 60 percent of their lives feels truly difficult.
But it is not necessarily 100 percent. There are still good things. There are still things that are going well. There are still parts of our lives for which we can be thankful.
In other words, there are both pleasant and unpleasant things in our hearts. But when we take the unpleasant things, bring them to the surface, and continually express them through our words, something begins to happen.
Our entire lives gradually become defined by those unpleasant things.
At first, perhaps only 10 percent of our hearts was troubled. But when we repeatedly complain, grumble, and express our frustration, our entire lives begin to look miserable. Before long, it seems as though everything in our lives has become a source of pain.
It began with a relatively small frustration. But through our words, that frustration gradually takes over our entire lives.
Complaining does not solve a single one of our problems. Instead, it has the effect of dragging our lives downward.
A powerful example of this is the people of Israel during their journey through the wilderness.
They had been delivered from slavery in Egypt, and they were joyfully traveling toward the land of Canaan.
Only a short time earlier, they had been suffering under the oppression of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. They had been forced into hard labor. Their children had been subjected to terrible suffering, and they had been living under circumstances of extreme hardship.
But God, through His great grace and power, delivered them and set them free.
What an extraordinary blessing! What a joyful occasion! What a wonderful thing it was!
In their joy, they sang songs of praise to God.
But that joy and praise did not last very long. When they entered the wilderness and found themselves in a place where there was no water, they began to complain. They began to grumble against God.
What was the problem that troubled them?
They had no water. That was the immediate problem.
There were so many other things for which they could have been joyful. They had been liberated from slavery. They had experienced God’s extraordinary deliverance. Their lives had been transformed by His grace.
Yet all that joy seemed to disappear because of one problem: there was no water.
That one difficulty began to overshadow everything else. Their lives became filled with bitterness and distress.
Their own words of complaint eventually began to destroy them.
Jesus also told us not to worry.
Why? Because worry does not solve our problems. It cannot even add a single inch to our height. Yet worry has the power to consume us and lead us toward despair.
When there are both positive and negative things in our hearts, if we continually bring out the negative things and express them, the unfortunate result is that our entire lives can become overwhelmed by negativity.
Then what about gratitude?
What happens when we begin to express our gratitude?
When the gratitude that is already within our hearts comes out through our words, I believe that we will begin to regain our strength and courage.
When we discover the things for which we can be thankful and begin to express that gratitude, our words of thanksgiving strengthen our lives. They give us renewed energy and enable us to face our circumstances with courage.
They give us the strength and ability to keep going and to work through the problems we encounter, whatever our circumstances may be.
God says to us, “Give thanks to the LORD. Give thanks to God.”
Let us think carefully about this command. Why does God tell us to give thanks to Him?
Is it because God is somehow hungry for our gratitude? Does He say, “I want to feel happier, so you need to tell Me how thankful you are. I need your praise to satisfy My thirst”?
Does God demand our thanksgiving and praise for His own benefit?
Absolutely not!
What kind of God is He?
God is the self-existent God. He is independent and completely self-sufficient. He lacks absolutely nothing.
There is nothing that God needs. There is nothing He lacks.
God does not receive His glory only when we worship Him. Even if we do not worship Him, even if we do not pray to Him, even if we do not thank Him or praise Him, God does not become any less glorious.
Why? Because He is glorious in Himself. He is perfectly full and complete in Himself. He is the perfect God, lacking nothing.
God does not need our praise, our prayers, or our devotion in order to become complete.
Then why does this God, who lacks absolutely nothing, look at us and say, “Give thanks to God”?
The answer is simple: He commands us to do this for our own good.
If we live our lives complaining and grumbling, we can end up destroying ourselves. The words that come out of our mouths can gradually tear our lives apart.
But a life filled with thanksgiving and praise to God is a blessed life.
That is why God encourages us to give thanks to Him. I pray in the name of the Lord that we may truly believe this: God’s command to give thanks is given not because God needs our gratitude, but because we need it.
When we express our gratitude through our words, the complaints and resentments within us—the things that make us sad and drag us down—begin to lose their power over us.
Complaining, worrying, and anxiety can lock us inside a prison of despair. They can keep us trapped, bringing our lives down into failure and hopelessness.
But when we live lives of thanksgiving and praise to God, our lives begin to change. We experience the power of God and learn to live with courage and confidence.
So what should we always look for?
What should we focus on?
We should look for people’s strengths. We should look for possibilities.
Every person has both strengths and weaknesses. If we continually focus on people’s weaknesses, constantly pointing them out and reminding them of their shortcomings, we may think that this will help them improve.
But it often does not.
Instead, it can discourage people and bring them down.
What is one of the most common mistakes parents make with their children?
Parents want their children to do well. Because they love their children and want the best for them, they often end up nagging them.
“Why can’t you do better than that?”
“Please, try to be more diligent.”
“Come on, work harder!”
“Why don’t you study more?”
Parents say these things because they believe their words will make their children better.
But they often fail to realize that every one of those words can become like poison. Instead of building their children up, those words can tear them down, crush their spirits, and leave them without the strength to get back up again.
How many times have we spoken carelessly and ended up damaging the lives of the very children we wanted to help?
I have made that mistake many times myself.
When I first moved to the United States, I enrolled my child in school. My child began attending elementary school as a first grader.
Not long afterward, my child brought home a notice from school.
When I looked at it, I discovered that it contained something very interesting: “100 Ways to Praise Your Child.”
It listed one hundred different expressions parents could use to encourage their children.
“Good job!”
“Super!”
“Wonderful!”
“Marvelous!”
There were one hundred expressions like these.
The message was that whenever children did something, we should encourage them with words of praise. Even when they stumbled or made mistakes, we should find opportunities to affirm them and speak words of encouragement.
When children continually hear such words, they begin to recognize the potential within themselves. They become more confident, more capable, and more able to grow.
I was deeply impressed by that list.
But I have to admit that I did not do a very good job of putting it into practice!
My wife often reminded me of those principles.
Instead of constantly bringing out people’s weaknesses and shortcomings, instead of focusing on what is wrong and leading ourselves and others into discouragement, we should speak about their strengths.
We should remember how much grace God has given us and how deeply He loves us.
When we look at God’s goodness, express our gratitude, and sing His praises, our lives can move toward an even more blessed path.
So remember this: God commands us to give thanks not for His own benefit, but for ours.
I pray in the name of the Lord that we will never forget this truth.
Recently, a television series about a newly formed volleyball team has been airing. Have any of you been watching it?
Apparently, not many of you!
It airs on Sunday evenings on MBC. It features Kim Yeon-koung, the famous volleyball player, who has become a coach and formed a team called the Wonder Dogs.
She has brought together a group of players who are something like an underdog team, and together they are taking on new challenges.
What makes the program so interesting is that it is not scripted. It is a reality program showing what actually happens.
In their first match, they played against the girls’ volleyball team from Shūjitsu High School in Japan.
In Season 1, the Wonder Dogs had played against this same team and lost after the Japanese team came from behind to win the match 3–2. Now they were facing each other again.
The Wonder Dogs are an adult team, while their opponents are high school students. But these high school girls were incredibly talented. In fact, one of the world’s top-ranked high school players was on that team.
They were such a powerful team that the Wonder Dogs could hardly even receive their serves.
The match began, and the Wonder Dogs lost the first set. Then they lost the second set. They were also on the verge of losing the third set.
They kept making mistakes. They were so overwhelmed by the strong teamwork of the high school girls that they began to lose their composure.
Mistakes that they normally would not have made started happening. They made serving errors, receiving errors, and failed to coordinate with one another.
The situation was becoming desperate.
At that moment, Kim Yeon-koung, acting as their coach, shouted to her players:
“Hey, listen up!”
But the players could not concentrate. They were overwhelmed by a sense of defeat. They were thinking, “That’s it. We’re finished. We’re going to lose.”
Then Kim Yeon-koung paused for a moment and suddenly began shouting something different.
Apparently, she was not normally the kind of coach who relied on psychological tactics. But this time, she shouted:
“It’s okay, everyone!”
To her own team, which was losing badly, she said:
“It’s okay, everyone! Just relax and play comfortably. Keep playing the way you know how!”
And as soon as they heard those words, something began to change.
Little by little, the players started coming back to life.
Until that moment, they had been thinking:
“We’re not good enough. We’re going to lose. We’re going to be completely defeated.”
But when they heard those words of encouragement, they gradually began to regain their confidence.
They were reminded that they could do it.
And what do you think happened in the end?
The team that had been losing two sets to none came back and won the match 3–2!
It was like a drama. An incredible drama!
Of course, if you wrote a television drama with a story like that, people might complain that it was too unrealistic!
But today, God is speaking to you and to me.
“Give thanks to the LORD.”
Why?
Because His grace endures forever. His steadfast love endures forever.
It is not that God’s grace is absent from our lives. The problem is that we forget His grace. Instead, we focus on the things that trouble us, the things that are not going well, and our own weaknesses.
We become discouraged. We complain and grumble. And eventually, we find ourselves on the verge of giving up.
But the Lord speaks to us because He loves us.
He is saying:
“Do not focus only on those things. Look at how My love has been at work in your lives.”
Perhaps there are painful and sorrowful things in your life.
As time passes, you may feel that your strength is fading, that your abilities are diminishing, and that you are becoming weaker and weaker.
You may begin to wonder, “Am I becoming nothing? Is there anything left in me?”
Perhaps you have tried again and again to overcome challenges, only to experience repeated failures. You may begin to think, “Does my life have any value at all?”
Or perhaps you are suffering from a serious illness, one that is difficult even for modern medicine to treat. You may feel that your life has become unbearably painful.
But even in the face of these realities, we must never forget the wonderful blessing that God has loved us.
Because God loves us, He gave His one and only Son for us.
Jesus gave everything for us on the cross. He gave His life to wash away our sins and to save us—people like you and me, who were otherwise destined for eternal destruction.
He rescued us and made us children of God.
That love of God will never disappear. It remains with us throughout our lives.
Therefore, whatever circumstances we may face, I pray that we will always look to the grace of the Lord and proclaim:
“His steadfast love endures forever!”
May all of us become people who look to God’s love at every moment and praise Him for His unfailing grace.
Every year, when Thanksgiving season comes around, we have written Thanksgiving cards.
We have done this year after year.
Perhaps some of you have wondered, “Why do we have to do this again? Why does the pastor keep making us do this? Isn’t this a little troublesome?”
But this year, we decided to do something a little different. We are going to create a Thanksgiving newspaper!
I want each of you, in your respective group chats, to take some time to think about the grace of God that you may have forgotten during this past year.
What kind of grace has God shown you throughout your life this year? In what ways has His grace been revealed to you?
Instead of looking only at the things that have caused us pain, the times when we have fallen, and the moments when we have failed, let us look again at God’s grace.
Let us express our gratitude.
Why? Because expressing gratitude is one of the ways God restores our strength and renews our lives.
So I encourage each of you to share at least one thing for which you are thankful in your group chat. Let us put together a Thanksgiving newspaper.
As you read other people’s thanksgiving cards and hear what they are thankful for, you may find yourself saying:
“That’s right! I should be thankful for that, too!”
“That’s right! God has shown us His grace in that way as well!”
As we count these blessings one by one, let us rediscover the spirit of gratitude.
Remember this: Recovering gratitude means recovering strength. Recovering gratitude means recovering joy and happiness.
I pray that we will all move forward together in faith, remembering this important truth.
As we go through this month of November, our month of thanksgiving, let us overcome the temptation of Satan to allow the painful things in our lives to paint our entire world black.
Instead, let us remember just how great God’s grace is.
Let us remember that God has blessed us with our children. He has given us our husbands and wives. He has given us our parents.
Let us remember that even today, God has given us the breath of life.
Let us count these blessings, one by one.
And may the songs of thanksgiving we offer to God become the defining theme of our lives.
May we all live such blessed lives, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
