God Is with Us Wherever We Go
The God Who Is Present Everywhere
Scripture: 1 Kings 20:23–30
In our previous message, we looked at the war between Israel and Aram and how Israel won that battle. God helped the people of Israel, and through His intervention, they were able to achieve victory. But today, we are going to look at what happened a year later. When the year had passed, the kingdom of Aram—which we might identify with modern-day Syria—invaded the northern kingdom of Israel once again. The people of Israel once again found themselves facing another war. Their previous victory did not mean that everything was over. We might wish that once we win a battle, all our pain and sorrow would come to an end and we could enjoy a peaceful and trouble-free life. But that is not how life works. Just when we think we have solved one problem, another problem comes along. Once we overcome one mountain, another, often even bigger one, appears before us. Think about raising children. We often say to ourselves, “If only my child could get through this stage. If only they could overcome that next challenge. If only I could see them get married.” We face one challenge after another, overcoming them one by one. Yet throughout our lives, we continue to encounter various kinds of pain, sorrow, and suffering. This is simply part of the reality of human life. The people of Israel had won the war against Aram with God’s help. But that did not mean that Aram would never invade them again or that Israel could now enjoy a long period of peace and prosperity. Once again, the people of Israel found themselves threatened by the Aramean army, which had regrouped and was preparing to attack them. But here is what is remarkable: God helped the people of Israel once again. God did not say, “I helped you once. That should be enough. Now you are on your own.” No! God intervened again. He helped them again and again and again. Through this story, we are reminded once more of the extraordinary grace of God.
This time, however, the Aramean army had a different strategy. As they prepared for battle, they reasoned among themselves: “Last time, we fought them in the mountains, and that is why we lost. What kind of god is the god of Israel? He must be a god who is powerful in the mountains. The land of Israel itself is full of mountains, and their God seems to give them victory there. We chose the wrong battlefield. We should not fight them in the mountains. Instead, we should go down into the valleys and fight them on the plains. There, the LORD will not be able to exercise His power. Our gods will help us, and we will win.” That was how they thought. People in those days often believed that different gods had different areas of expertise. If they wanted to have children, they would worship a god who was believed to help people have children. If they wanted a good harvest, they would offer sacrifices to the god of agriculture. If they wanted to sail the seas and catch fish, they would worship the god of the sea. In other words, they believed that each god had a particular area of responsibility. It was much like the way we visit different medical specialists today. If we have a problem with our bones, we go to an orthopedic doctor. If we have a neurological problem, we visit a neurosurgeon. If we have a problem with our teeth, we go to a dentist. In the same way, people in those days believed that they needed to approach the particular god who specialized in the area where they needed help. When we think of the god of the sea, who comes to mind? Poseidon! People might say, “Poseidon rules the sea, and in our culture, the Dragon King rules the waters.” They believed that if they wanted to go out to sea, they had to be careful not to offend Poseidon. They needed to worship him properly and gain his favor. That was the kind of religious thinking people had in those days. So when the Arameans thought about the God of Israel, they reasoned: “What kind of god is the God of Israel? He must be a god who is powerful in the mountains. So if we want to defeat Israel, we must take the battle down into the valleys. If we fight on level ground, we will win.”
But was this a correct understanding of God, or was it a misunderstanding? It was a misunderstanding! They simply did not know who God really was. What kind of God is our God? He is omnipresent. He is present everywhere. He is also almighty, and His power has no limits. Therefore, wherever we may be and whatever circumstances we may face, we must remember that God is with us.
The Aramean army even replaced its kings with military commanders. Their thinking was something like this: “Our kings failed us last time. This time, let’s appoint new commanders and see if we can do better.” They also replenished their troops and horses. They reorganized their forces and made extensive preparations for war. But what about the army of Israel? Their numbers were overwhelmingly inferior. First Kings 20:27 says: “The Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, and they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.” When we compare the two armies, was this really a fair fight? Not at all! The army of Israel looked like two small flocks of goats, while the Aramean army filled the entire countryside. From a purely military perspective, it seemed almost impossible for Israel to defeat such an enormous army, which was relying on its overwhelming numerical superiority. But there was something Israel had that Aram did not have. What was it? They had God! God loved His people and watched over them. He protected them. As a result, the Israelites struck down one hundred thousand Aramean foot soldiers in a single day. The survivors fled to the city of Aphek. But what good did it do them to escape there? The city wall collapsed on the remaining twenty-seven thousand men who had fled into the city. And so the battle ended in a complete victory for Israel.
This is the story we find in today’s passage. As we reflect on this account, I hope we will come to understand more clearly what kind of God we worship and serve. What kind of God is He? Our God is omnipresent. He is God everywhere. He is not a God who is confined within the walls of a church building. We may build beautiful church buildings, and some churches may have magnificent architecture and centuries of glorious tradition. But God is not limited to those buildings. Even if we have no church building, even if everything we once had is taken away, God is still there. He is present with His people wherever they may be. We must remember this truth. How thankful we should be for this! What a tremendous source of comfort it is for us! People tend to look at outward appearances. They are impressed by how big something is, how magnificent it looks, and how impressive its outward appearance may be. But what kind of God is our God? He is not bound by any of these things. He is the God who is with us wherever we are. Sometimes difficult circumstances may prevent us from coming to church. We may be confined to a hospital bed, longing to attend worship but unable to do so. There may be various reasons why we cannot gather together with other believers in a place of worship. But the wonderful thing is that God does not say, “You didn’t come, so that’s it. You are of no use to Me.” Rather, we must remember that God seeks those who truly seek Him and worship Him in spirit and in truth.
Long ago, Jacob had to leave his father’s house and travel a long distance toward the home of his mother’s family. His brother was trying to kill him, so he could no longer remain at home. He had no choice but to leave his father’s house and the home of his beloved mother. Now he had to travel alone across a desolate wilderness, heading toward a distant land where his relatives lived. How lonely and frightening that journey must have been! The people who had protected him were no longer there. The people who had been with him were gone. He was left alone, with no one to protect him. But that night, God appeared to him. God showed him a ladder reaching from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending on it. Through this vision, God assured Jacob: “You are not an orphan. You are not alone. I will be with you.” Jacob had thought that the God of his father lived in his father’s house, back in the land of Canaan. He may have thought that God’s presence was somehow connected to that particular place. But now he discovered something extraordinary. Even though he had left that place, God was still with him. God would walk with him. What an amazing expression of God’s grace and blessing! The God who had promised to be with Jacob remained faithful to His promise. Even when Jacob was deceived and exploited in the household of his uncle Laban, even when he was treated unfairly and suffered tremendous losses, God protected him and continued to show him His loving grace. Not only did God protect Jacob, but He also blessed him with great prosperity. Eventually, He enabled Jacob to return to his father’s house with his wives and children. In Genesis 28:16, Jacob makes this confession: “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” Dear brothers and sisters, I pray that this confession will become our confession as well. When you are alone, when you feel abandoned, when it seems that there is no one who can help you, may you be able to say: “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
God is not a God who is confined to the mountains. He is not a God who is confined to the temple. He is the God who, in order to be with us, left His exalted throne in heaven and came down to this lowly world. He is the God who loves us so deeply that He was even willing to shed His blood for us. Abraham once went down to the land of Egypt. He had left the land of Canaan and entered a completely unfamiliar territory. How frightened he must have been! He was surrounded by people whose ways were unfamiliar and whose power he feared. He wondered whether he and his family could even survive among such people. In his fear, he resorted to deception because he wanted to save his own life. But God was not present only in the land of Canaan. God was also present in Egypt, in the very land where Abraham feared the people around him. And there, too, God watched over Abraham and protected his family. Daniel and his three friends were taken far away from Jerusalem and brought to Babylon. They found themselves in a foreign land under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar, surrounded by people who threatened to kill anyone who worshiped the God of Israel. There were terrible threats against those who remained faithful to God. Those who refused to worship the king’s image faced death. Even when Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den, and when his three friends were thrown into the blazing furnace, God was with them. Dear brothers and sisters, wherever our journey may take us, let us remember this truth: Our God is almighty. He is not limited to one particular place or sphere of influence. He is the Lord who came to this lowly world to be with us. He is Immanuel, God with us. May we remember that this very God is with us today. And may we all rise up in faith, trusting in the God who is always with us, wherever we go. I pray this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
