성령을 따라 광야로 (눅 4:1-13)

여러분, 오늘 여러분들이 좋아하시는 슈퍼히어로 얘기 한번 해보려고 합니다. 여러분, 슈퍼맨 좋아하시나요? 슈퍼맨, 슈퍼맨 좋아하시는 분? 그리고 나는 배트맨이 더 좋다, 배트맨 좋아하시는 분 한번 손 들어보십시오. 아이, 그럼 난 둘 다 싫고 스파이더맨이 좋다, 나는 스파이더맨이 좋다. 예, 여러분, 슈퍼히어로라고 부르죠. 이런 사람들을 슈퍼히어로, 한마디로 말하면 적수가 없이, 대적할 사람이 없이 센 초능력자들을 말합니다.

제가 어릴 때 이런 슈퍼히어로들을 보면서 그런 생각을 했어요. ‘아, 저 사람들끼리 싸우면, 아니 그러면 적수가 없다는데 적수가 없는 저 슈퍼히어로들끼리 싸우면 누가 이길까?’ 제가 이런 고민을 했더니, 아마 영화감독들도 똑같은 생각을 한 것 같아요. 그래서 슈퍼히어로들이 나와서 같이 싸우는 어벤져스 영화가 나오더라고요. 예, 제가 생각하면 만들어져요. 그리고 제가 그때 생각한 게 또 하나 있습니다. 제가 주일학교 때예요.

‘그러면 예수님하고 슈퍼맨하고 싸우면 누가 이길까?’ 여러분, 누가 이길 것 같으세요? 어, 당연히 예수님이에요. 당근이에요. 제가 그 질문을 주일학교 때 선생님한테 했잖아요. 주일학교 선생님한테 물어봤더니 대답이 뭐라고 나왔을까요? 알밤 맞았어요, 꿀밤 맞았어요. 쓸데없는 소리 한다고. 예, 지금 와서 생각해 보면 예, 알밤 맞을 만한 얘기죠. 예수님은 슈퍼맨이 아니십니다. 예, 지금은 그거 분명히 깨닫겠어요.

그런데 몇 년 전에 제가 아직 미국에서 목회할 때요, 여름성경학교 아이들 여름성경학교 주제가 뭘로 나왔냐 하면 ‘Jesus is my superhero’, “예수님은 나의 슈퍼히어로십니다.” 그런 게 주일학교 여름성경학교 주제로 나왔어요, 미국에서요. 물론 아이들이 재미있게 받아들이라고 아이들과 접촉하기 위한 하나의 도구였겠지만, 제가 생각할 때 ‘어, 저건 좀 아니지 않나?’ 그런 생각이 들었습니다. 이게 조금 문제가 있다고 봐요, 저는. 우리들은 예수님을 마치 슈퍼맨처럼 생각하는 건 아닐까요?

이게 왜 문제냐? 마치 예수님을 원하는 일은 뭐든지 다 할 수 있고, 현실을 자기 마음대로 바꾸어 낼 수 있는, 아니 우리에게 그렇게 해줄 수 있는 분으로 우리가 그렇게 믿고, 그렇게 만들어 놓고, 그렇게 우리가 예수님을 그려 나가고 싶어 한다는 거죠. 그런데요, 그게 성경적이냐? 우리가 항상 그걸 물어봐야 되잖아요. 그게 성경적이냐, 성경이 우리에게 보여주는 예수님의 모습이냐? 아니라는 겁니다. 성경이 우리에게 보여주는 예수님의 모습은 슈퍼맨의 모습이 아니라는 겁니다. 슈퍼맨하고는 달라도 너무너무 달라요.

자, 여러분, 오늘 우리가 읽은 본문 누가복음 4장의 바로 앞부분 3장에는 예수님의 족보가 나옵니다. 뭐가 나온다고요? 족보. 자, 누가가요, 예수님의 족보를 쫙 적어놨는데 왜 그러냐? 예수님이 사람의 혈통 가운데서 태어나셨다는 겁니다. 사람의 혈통 가운데서 태어나신 진짜 사람이라고 그 족보를 통해서 확인해 주는 거예요. 한마디로 말하면 예수님도 우리와 같이 혈과 육을 가지신 사람으로 오셨다는 거예요.

이게 왜 중요하냐? 자, 여러분, 광야에서 마귀의 시험을 당하시는 그분이 우리와 같이 뭘 가지셨다고요? 혈과 육을 가지신 분이라는 말입니다. 한마디로 말하면 이 시험은 예수님께도 요즘 젊은이들 말로 장난이 아니었습니다. 어떤 분들은 ‘예수님이신데, 아니 하나님의 아들이라며? 그 정도야 가뿐히 넘어가셨겠지.’ 그런데 그것이 가뿐한 시험이 아니었다는 겁니다. 왜요? 그분도 우리와 같이 혈과 육을 가진 사람이었기 때문입니다.

물론 그분은 전능하신 하나님이십니다. 그러나 성경은 그분이 우리와 같이 100% 완전한 사람으로 이 땅에 오셨고, 완전한 사람으로서 사람에게 가장 심각한 유혹—굶주림의 유혹, 권위에 대한 영광에 대한 유혹, 사람들의 인정과 인기에 대한 유혹—그 모든 시험을 치열하게, 적당히 대충 쉽게가 아니고 정말 치열하게 그 유혹을 겪어내셨다는 거예요. 여러분, 예수님께서 십자가에서 겪으신 고통은 어떠셨을까요? 하나님의 아들이시니까 그 정도는 쉽게 넘어가셨을까요? 아니요.

그 십자가에서 예수님은 “나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까” 몸부림치며 하나님 앞에 하소연하실 정도로 그 고통은 보통의 고통이 아니었습니다. 마찬가지로 그분이 광야에서 겪으신 이 시험도 그냥 장난으로, 형식적으로 대충 지나가신 것이 아니라는 점을 우리가 분명하게 확인하고 우리가 그걸 느낄 수 있어야 되는 거죠. 예수님은 정말로, 진짜로 우리가 느끼는 죄의 유혹에 대하여 가장 심각하게 직면하셨습니다. 그 유혹이 예수님께도 견딜 수 없이 고통스러운 것이었습니다. 그러나 주님은 그것을 피하지 않으셨고 부딪히셨고, 그리고 말씀으로 그것을 결국은 이겨내셨던 거죠.

자, 여러분, 예수님이 어떤 분이신지 우리는 분명하게 확인합니다. 히브리서 기자가 말한 대로 우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 리가 아니요, 예수님은 우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 분이 아니래요. 긍휼히 여기지 못하실 분이 아니래요. 왜냐? 왜냐? 그분이 우리의 연약함을 똑같이 체험하셨거든요. 우리가 연약하기 때문에 겪는 고통을 그분이 똑같이 겪으셨거든요. 느끼셨거든요. 그래서 그분은 그걸 진짜로 동정하시고 긍휼히 여기시는 분입니다. 그러나 한 가지, 그 모든 일에 있어서 그분은 시험은 받으셨으나, 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되 죄는 없으시니라. 그 시험에 지지 아니하시고 이겨내신 분이신 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다.

그런데 우리가 알아야 할 것은 이 시험이 언제 이루어졌나 하는 겁니다. 중요한 건 예수님께서 지금 공생애를 이제 막 시작하신 시점이라는 거예요. 예수님께서 요단강에서 세례를 받으신 직후에 광야로 나아가서 시험을 받으셨다 그랬어요. 1절을 보세요. “예수께서 성령의 충만함을 입어 요단강에서 돌아오사 광야에서 사십 일 동안 성령에게 이끌리시며” 그러니까요, 예수님의 세례는 곧 그가 하나님의 아들이신 메시아로서 공생애를 막 시작하시는 시점입니다. 이 땅에서 하나님의 나라를 세우시는 왕으로서의 사역을 시작하시는 겁니다.

그 장면에 대해서 누가가 뭐라고 말하고 있는지 볼까요? 누가복음 3장입니다. 21절부터 보시죠. “백성이 다 세례를 받을 때에 예수도 세례를 받으시고 기도하실 때에 하늘이 열리며” 하늘이 열렸대요. 막혀 있던 하늘이. “성령이 비둘기 같은 형체로 그의 위에 강림하시더니 하늘로부터 소리가 나기를” 누구의 소리예요? 아버지 하나님, 성부 하나님의 소리죠. 그러니까 성령이 비둘기 같이 강림하시고 아버지 하나님의 음성이 거기에 있고 아들 예수 그리스도께서 요단강에서 세례를 받으시고 성부와 성자와 성령이 함께하시는 이 시간, 아버지 하나님께서 뭐라고 말씀하십니까? “너는 내 사랑하는 아들이라 내가 너를 기뻐하노라 하시니라.”

이 시점에 이렇게 예수께서 세례를 받으시고 그의 공생애를 시작하신 시점에 우리에게 던져지는 질문, 우리가 생각해야 될 질문은 너무나 분명합니다. 그분이 왕이시라고 그러면 도대체 어떤 왕이 되려고 하시는 걸까? 왕이라고 다 같은 왕은 아니잖아요. 그렇죠? 그분은 도대체 어떤 왕이 되실까? 그분은 이제까지 있었던 왕들과는 어떻게 다르실까? 그분의 나라, 그분이 선포하신 그 나라는 도대체 어떤 나라일까? 여러분, 이게 중요한 겁니다. 우리에게 바로 이 시점에 있어야 할 질문이 이거예요. 우리가 앞으로 누가복음을 쭉 읽어 나갈 텐데 그 누가복음을 통해서 우리가 찾아야 될 질문이 이거예요. 그 나라는 어떤 나라인가? 그분은 어떤 왕이신가?

“하나님의 아들” 그렇죠, 하나님의 아들이라 그랬어요. “메시아” 맞습니다. “성령의 사람” 성령이 그 위에 부어지셨으니까요. 하나님이 사랑하시고 하나님이 기뻐하시는 아들이라 그랬습니다. 그렇다면 도대체 그분은 그런 하나님의 아들 메시아, 하나님 나라의 왕으로서 이 세상에 있던 다른 왕들과는 도대체 어떻게 다른 분이신가, 거기에 초점을 맞추셔야 돼요.

여러분, 이미 예수님의 시대에는 사실은 스스로 메시아라 칭하는 그런 사람들이 많았어요. 백성들 가운데 나타나서 그들의 왕 노릇 하겠다고, 그들을 로마의 권세로부터 해방시켜 주겠다고 나섰다가, 칼 빼 들었다가 로마에게 진압되어 십자가에 못 박혀 죽은 메시아, 소위 자칭 메시아들이 그 시대에 많이 있었습니다.

그런데 오늘 본문은 예수께서 성령에 이끌려 광야로 나가셨대요. 그가 왕으로 하나님의 나라를 선포하시고 그의 공생애를 시작하시는 시점에서 그가 많은 사람들이 있는 곳으로 가지 아니하시고, 그가 예루살렘 도성으로 바로 진격하지 아니하시고 그가 가신 곳이 어디였다고요? 광야, 광야. 아무도 없는 사막. 그를 그곳으로 이끈 것이 누구라고요? 성령 하나님. 그리고 그곳에서 마귀에게 시험을 받으시면서 그가 세 가지 질문을 받는 것을 봅니다.

그러니까 이 시험은요, 그가 하나님의 아들 메시아로서 이 땅에서 하나님 나라의 왕으로서 사역을 시작하시는 그 일과 밀접하게 연결돼 있어요, 안 돼 있어요? 연결돼 있다는 거죠. 그걸 보셔야 돼요. 그가 왕으로서 받는 질문, 시험. 그리고 그것을 그가 어떻게 이겨내시는지, 우리는 그 말씀을 통해서 그가 어떤 왕이신지, 그의 나라가 어떤 나라인지를 알 수 있게 된다는 겁니다.

그러면 그가 광야에서 겪으신 세 가지 시험, 우리가 이미 잘 아는 내용이지만 한 번 더 살펴봅시다. 첫 번째는 뭐예요? “돌들이 뭐가 되게 하라?” “떡이 되게 하라.” 예, 마귀가 하는 말을 들어보십시오. 마귀가 이르되 “네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든” 마귀가 예수께서 하나님의 아들이라는 걸 알고 있어요. 그리고 그것을 부정하지 않아요. 대놓고 반대하지 않아요. 그러면서 “그래, 네가 하나님의 아들이야. 하나님의 아들이거든 이 돌들에게 명하여 떡이 되게 하라.”

지금 40일 동안 굶주리셨어요. 굶주리신 예수님에게 돌들에게 명하여 떡이 되게 하래요. “네가 하나님의 아들이라며? 하나님께서 원하시는 일 아니야? 하나님의 아들인 네가 굶어 죽게 두시겠어? 그러니까 돌들이라도 떡으로 만들어. 그거 하나님도 원하실 거야.” 여러분, 이게 포인트예요. 우리들 항상 그렇게 생각하죠. 내게 좋은 일은 누구에게도 좋아요? 하나님께도 좋은 일이다. 그러니까 내가 원하는 일은 누구도 원하셔요? 하나님도 원하신다. 그게 우리가 넘어가기 딱 좋은 포인트예요. 우리의 욕망을 가지고.

예수님께서 뭐라고 대답하십니까? 4절에 보십시오. 예수께서 대답하시되 “기록된 바 사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니라 하였느니라.” 중요한 건 내 욕망이 아니고, 내 욕망을 따라 ‘하나님도 그거 원하실 거야, 내게 좋은 일이니까 하나님께도 좋은 거지’ 그렇게 섣불리 정당화하기 전에, 나의 욕망과 필요를 정당화하기 전에 중요한 건 말씀으로 분별할 수 있어야 된다는 겁니다. 이게 정말 말씀에 합당한 질문인가? 하나님은 우리에게 어떻게 하시는 분이신가?

예수님도 그 말씀을 통해서 이 대답을 하셨습니다. 신명기 8장에 나오는 말씀입니다. “너를 낮추시며 너를 주리게 하시며” 누가요? 하나님께서요. 하나님께서, 하나님께서 광야로 그들을 이끄셨어요. “또 너도 알지 못하며 네 조상들도 알지 못하던 만나를 네게 먹이신 것은” 다 이유가 있어요. “사람이 떡으로만 사는 것이 아니요 여호와의 입에서 나오는 모든 말씀으로 사는 줄을 네가 알게 하려 하심이니라.”

하나님이 우리를 광야로 이끄시고, 하나님이 우리를 굶게 하시고, 하나님이 우리를 주리게 하시는 데는 다 이유가 있다는 거예요. 하나님의 입에서 나오는 모든 말씀으로 우리의 삶이 지켜지는 것을, 지탱되는 것을, 거기에 우리의 생명이 있는 것을 알게 하려 하심이라고요. 그렇습니다. 중요한 건 당장 내 필요와 욕망이 아니라, 하나님의 말씀이 무엇이라고 말씀하시는지를 분별하는 것인 줄 여러분 아시기 바랍니다.

두 번째 유혹은 뭡니까? 마귀가 예수를 이끌고 높은 데 올라갑니다. 순식간에 천하만국을 보여줍니다. “모든, 모든 권위와 영광을 내가 가졌으니” 그랬어요. 마귀가 세상의 모든 권세를 가졌대요. 왜요? 이 땅에 죄가 들어온 이후로 하나님께서 그의 손에 맡기셨어요. 그래서 마귀는 이 땅의 권세 잡은 자라 그랬어요. 그 이 땅의 권세 잡은 마귀가 말하기를 “나한테 절 한 번만 하면, 나한테 한 번만 굽히면 이 모든 것들 너에게 다 줄게. 한 번이잖아, 한 번. 한 번인데 뭐가 어때?”

여러분, 마귀는 예수님께서 그 나라의 왕으로 이 땅에 오신 것을 잘 알았습니다. 예수님이 태어날 때부터 마리아에게 가브리엘 천사가 말씀하셨어요. 그가 주권자가 될 것이라. 아니, 주권자가 되려면 천하만국의 영광과 권위와 모든 권세를 다 가진다는 얘기니까 어차피 그분의 것이 될 것이니까, 어때? 한 번 까딱만 하면 그게 뭐라고 다 손에 넣을 수 있으니까, 그걸 가지고 하나님의 뜻대로 좋은 데 쓰면 되는 거 아니야? 그러니까 어때, 한 번인데?

여러분, 예수님뿐만 아니라 우리 모든 하나님의 자녀들에게 수도 없이 그런 유혹들이 밀려옵니다. ‘어때, 한 번인데? 한 번만 눈 감으면 되는데, 한 번만 넘어가면 되는데, 한 번만 속이면 되는데, 한 번만 굽히면 되는데.’ 내 양심을, 내 영혼을 한 번 팔아먹으면 다시 찾을 수 있을까요? 내 손안에 쥐어진 그것들이 마귀가 내게 그것을 쥐여 준다고 한들, 세상이 나에게 그것을 안겨 준다고 한들, 그것이 본래 가지고 있었던 내 인생의 목적대로 하나님의 자녀로서 그 나라의 가치를 따라 정말 나를 행복하게 만들어 주고, 나와 함께하는 모든 이들을 복되게 하는 그 놀라운 하나님의 나라의 역사에 쓰임 받을 수 있을까요? 그런 방식으로요.

여러분, 우리는 너무나 많이 실용주의라는 탈을 쓰고 우리 앞에 있는 마귀의 유혹을 쉽게 받아들이고 타협합니다. ‘에이, 어때 한 번인데? 모로 가도 서울만 가면 되지. 개같이 벌어서라도 정승처럼 쓰면 되지.’ 제가 늘 말씀드리죠. 개같이 번 돈으로는 정승같이 쓸 수 없다.

여러분, 목표가 정당하면 수단은 어떤 것이든 상관없는 것이 아닙니다. 절대 그렇지 않습니다. 예수님은 아주 단순하고 정직하게 그저 말씀에 순종하셨습니다. 오늘 본문의 8절에 보니까 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 “기록된 바 주 너의 하나님께 경배하고 다만, 다만, 오직 그를 섬기라 하였느니라.” 이 말씀도 광야에서 이스라엘 백성에게 주셨던 말씀입니다. 신명기 6장 12절부터 나오는 말씀이죠. “너는 조심하여 너를 애굽 땅 종 되었던 집에서 인도하여 내신 여호와를 잊지 말고 네 하나님 여호와를 경외하며 그를 섬기며 그의 이름으로 맹세할 것이니라. 너희는 다른 신들 곧 네 사면에 있는 백성의 신들을 따르지 말라.”

내 사면에 있는 백성의 신들—가나안의 그 풍요를 누리던 일곱 족속, 나일강의 풍요를 누리던 애굽, 그들의 신들. 그들은 말합니다. “우리같이 이런 신들을 섬겨야 너희도 배 두들기며 부국강병하며 잘 살 수 있는 거야. 바알을, 아세라를, 그 모스(그모스)를 이런 방식으로 이렇게 욕망을 따라 음란하게 섬겨야, 그래야 너희도 풍요를 누릴 수 있는 거야. 세상 사는 게 다 그런 거야.” 마귀는 오늘도 우리의 눈에 보여줍니다. 우리가 어떻게 하면 대박 날 수 있는지, 우리가 어떻게 하면 힘센 자가 되어서 연약한 자들을 우리의 발밑에 짓밟을 수 있는지.

한 개인은 멀쩡하고 정직한 그리스도인인데, 집단과 공동체를 향해서 나아가면 어떻게 그렇게 이기적이고 악한 일에 쉽게 눈을 감는지. “야, 공동체의 이익을 위해서는 어쩔 수 없는 거잖아. 우리 다수가 잘되기 위해서는 그 정도 희생은 감수해야 되는 거잖아. 야, 우리나라가 잘살려면 누구는 피눈물이 나더라도 우리는 부국강병을 위해서 달려가야지.”

그 부국강병을 위해서 가나안 일곱 족속 흉내를 내고 애굽으로 따라가고 그럴까 봐, 하나님은 신명기에서 그들이 요단강을 건너기 전에 당부하고 또 당부하셨습니다. “너희에게 나중에 왕이 생기고 그 왕이 너희를 부국강병으로 이끌기 위해서 애굽으로 사람을 보내어 말을 사 오고 병거를 사 오고, 절대로 그렇게 하면 안 된다”는 겁니다. 너희는 절대로 애굽을 바라보지 말라는 겁니다. 애굽으로 돌아가지 말라는 겁니다. 애굽을 쳐다보지도 말라는 겁니다. 하나님이 우리 가운데 세우기 원하시는 나라는 애굽과 같은 나라가 아닙니다.

세 번째, 마귀가 예수님에게 유혹한 내용은 사람들의 인정을 받으라는 겁니다. 높은 데, 예루살렘 성전 꼭대기에 올라가서 뛰어내리라는 겁니다. 뛰어내리면 네가 하나님의 아들이니까, 하나님께 소중한 사람이니까 하나님이 천사라도 보내서 너의 발을 들어 떨어지지 않게 잡아주실 거고, 그런 놀라운 일들이 있으면 사람들이 그걸 보고 “이야, 엄청난 사람이다. 대단한 사람이야. 저 사람이 우리의 왕이 될 거야.” 너를 따르지 않겠냐고. 여러분, 정치하는 사람들에게 제일 중요한 게 쇼오프(show off)하는 겁니다. 보여주는 거예요. 여러분 보셨잖아요. 요즘 우리 날마다 보고 있잖아요. TV에서, 길거리에서 어떻게든 자기 자신을 인정받으려고 드러내 보여주려고 “제가 잘합니다. 제가 잘할 수 있어요. 저를 좀 봐주세요.” 예, 어제 오후에 말씀 준비 정리하는데도 막 바깥에 얼마나 요란하고 시끄러운지 말도 못 합니다.

그러나 여러분, 마귀가 유혹하는 소리, “예수가 이스라엘의 왕이라면 화려한 능력으로 그 메시아임을 입증해야 되지 않는가?” 예수님 뭐라고 대답하셨습니까? 12절 말씀을 보십시오. 예수께서 이르시되 “주 너의 하나님을 시험하지 말라 하였느니라.”

이스라엘 백성이 광야에서 실패한 것이 바로 이거였습니다. 신명기 6장 16절에 보니까 “너희가 맛사에서 시험한 것 같이 너희의 하나님 여호와를 시험하지 말고 너희의 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 명하신 명령과 증거와 규례를 삼가 지키며” 하나님을 시험할 생각 하지 말고 하나님의 말씀을 있는 그대로 순종하라는 겁니다. 그게 믿음이에요. 광야에서 하나님께서 이스라엘에게 배우게 하시는 게 바로 그거예요. 눈에 보이는 대단한 걸로 하나님을 시험하려고 하지 말고 그 말씀 앞에 묵묵히 순종하며 그 말씀대로 사는 법을 배우라는 거예요. 그것이 여호와께서 보시기에 정직하고 선량한 일이라는 겁니다. 그렇게 하면, 너희가 그렇게 살면 하나님께서 어련히 알아서 복을 주신다는 거예요. 광야에서 그들이 배워야 될 삶이 바로 그거예요. 그런데 이스라엘은 먹을 거 달라고 불평하고, 목마르다고 불평하고, 우상숭배로 재앙을 자초하고 끊임없이 하나님을 시험했던 거죠.

그런데 이제 예수 그리스도께서 그들 가운데 서셨습니다. 하나님의 독생자이신 그분, 하나님이 사랑하고 기뻐하시는 아들, 한마디로 말하면 그의 장자, 이스라엘을 대표하는 하나님의 독생자 장자로서 이스라엘이 실패했던 그 일을 그분이 이루어 내신다는 겁니다. 그분이 요단강에서 마치 이스라엘이 홍해를 지나는 것처럼 그 세례의 물을 통과하시고, 이제 장차 모든 이스라엘의 운명을 위하여 그가 이스라엘이 실패했던 세 가지 질문에 맞닥뜨리시는 거죠.

어떻게 예수님은 이스라엘을 구원하실 수 있을까요? 어떻게 예수님은 이스라엘을 통하여 온 열방을 구원하신다는 하나님의 그 구속의 목적을 이루어 내실 수 있을까요? 어떻게 그분은 죄와 사망과 마귀의 권세로부터 그 모든 사람들을 진정한 해방의 길로 인도하실 수 있을까요? 그 답이 여기서 시작되는 거예요. 여러분, 그분이 마귀의 권세를 이기셨다는 겁니다. 예수님은 처음부터 끝까지 완전히 이기신 분이신 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다.

그분은 광야에서 승리하셨고, 그리고 겟세마네에서 승리하셨고, 그리고 십자가에서까지 끝까지 그 승리의 길을 걸어가셨습니다. 우리는 우리 자신이 이길 수 없는 그 싸움에서 이미 이기신 그분과 연합하여서 그분이 부어주시는 그분의 영이신 성령을 받고, 그분의 능력, 그 성령의 능력으로 그분과 함께 승리의 길로 나아가는 것입니다. 우리는 우리 앞에 닥칠 그 모든 시험을, 그 모든 유혹을 우리의 능력이 아니라 그분의 능력으로, 그분의 성령으로 결국에는 넉넉하게 이기게 될 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다. 우리를 의롭다 칭하신 그분께서 그의 성령으로 말미암아 우리를 의롭게 하시고 우리를 거룩하게 하시고, 우리가 그 의와 거룩함으로 마귀의 유혹을 이겨내는 자리에 서게 하실 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다.

그러면 여기서 중요한 건 예수님이 마귀에게 대응하시는 방식이에요. 그 방식을 보시는 게 중요해요. 예수님은 마귀하고 논쟁하지 않으셨어요. 옥신각신하고 다투지 않으셨어요. 머리띠 두르고 싸우지 않으셨어요. 다만 그분은 하나님의 말씀, 성경을 인용하셔서 성경을 가지고 분별하시고 마귀가 주는 유혹을, 욕망을 물리치셨다는 거죠. 그런데 여기 나오는 이 모든 성경 말씀들이 다 우리가 봤잖아요. 어디서 나왔어요? 신명기, 신명기. 신명기는 뭐예요? 광야 생활 이야기, 이스라엘의 광야 이야기, 광야에서 배운 이스라엘의 삶의 교훈을 우리에게 주시는 겁니다.

예수님이 세상의 참 주인이 되실 겁니다. 그렇지만 예수님은 그 세상의 주인이 되시고 그 세상을 다스리시는 왕으로 서실 때에 마귀처럼, 세상처럼 지위에 연연하지 않으셔요. 권력을 탐하지 않으셔요. 물질과 인기를 가지고 만들어 가지 않으셔요. 오직 그분은 겸손한 섬김의 자리에 오셔서 아버지 하나님의 말씀을 끝까지 순종하시는 것으로 그의 모든 통치를 이루어 가시는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다.

자, 여러분, 예수님이 행하시는 기적을 보세요. 자기 자신을 드러내기 위해서 기적을 행하지 않으셨어요. 오히려 대부분 예수님은 기적을 행하시면서 “사람들에게 말하지 마, 사람들에게 드러내지 마” 그러셨어요. 치유의 권능을 행하실 때도 자신의 능력을 자랑하시기 위한 것이 아니라 연약한 이들에게, 죽어가는 생명들에게 생명과 용기를 회복하기 위해서 그 일들을 행하셨어요. 예수님은 한 번도 무슨 싸구려 약장수처럼 묘기를 연출해 보이시려고 그런 일들을 하지 않으셨다는 겁니다. 예수님은 슈퍼맨이 아니라니까요. 예수님은 마술사가 아니라니까요.

여러분, 그러니까 마치 마술사처럼 그 능력이 자신에게 속한 것처럼 그 능력을 자랑하고 드러내면서 “나를 따라야 그런 은혜를 입을 수 있다”고 주장하는 자들이 있다면, 여러분, 그들은 예수님을 닮은 자들이 아니라 유혹자, 미혹자, 마귀, 사탄을 닮은 자들이라는 사실을 여러분이 분별해 낼 수 있어야 돼요.

하나님의 아들이라고 하는 예수님의 지위는 과시하기 위한, 드러내고 자랑하기 위한 것이 아니라 겸손과 섬김을 통하여 결국은 십자가의 죽음의 길로, 많은 사람을 위하여 자신을 대속물로 내어주시는 그 길로 그분을 이끌어 주셨습니다. 원수는 그 길, 그 죽음의 길, 그 십자가의 길을 걸어가려고 결심하신 예수 그리스도를 그 길로부터 이탈하게 하려고 유혹하고 있는 거예요. 그래서 시험하는 거예요. 예수님은 그 싸움의 시작부터 전혀 다른 방식으로, 세상의 왕들과는 전혀 다른 방식으로 승리하셨습니다. 그러니까 여러분, 세상의 정치의 방식으로 예수님을 전할 수 있다는 건 처음부터 끝까지 완전히 잘못된 착각이에요. 정치판을 통해서 어떻게든지 예수님을 전하고 하나님의 나라를 확장해 볼 수 있다? 천만해요. 그건 착각입니다. 여러분, 예수님은 끝까지 세상과 전혀 다른 승리의 길을 가십니다. 그리고 그 승리의 완성은 어디서 이루어져요? 십자가에서.

예수님의 승리는 오직 하나님의 말씀을 바로 분별하는 것으로만 가능합니다. 그리고 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 내 자신의 욕망과 하나님의 뜻을 바로 분별해야 됩니다. ‘아, 나한테 좋은 거니까 하나님은 나를 사랑하신다 그랬으니까 내게 좋은 거면 하나님께도 좋은 것이겠지.’ 천만해요. 하나님의 말씀이 정말로 그것을 가치 있다 하시는지, 정말 그렇게 살아도 된다고 하시는지 말씀을 통해서 분별하셔야 됩니다. 우리의 욕망과 자기과시를 부추기는 솔깃한 마귀의 유혹을 오직 말씀으로만 이겨내는 것이 우리가 주님이 우리를 부르신 소명의 길을 걸어갈 수 있는, 그 길을 끝까지 걸어갈 수 있는 유일한 길이라는 사실을 여러분 아셔야 됩니다.

우리가 잊지 말아야 될 중요한 사실은요, 예수님조차도 시험을 받으셨다는 사실입니다. 그러니까 여러분, 내가 시험을 받고 내가 유혹에 갈등한다, 그거 당연한 거예요. 그거 자체를 너무 괴로워하지 마세요. 그걸 너무 두려워하지 마세요. 우리는 유혹을 받습니다. 당연히 힘들죠. 우리는 누구나 광야에 서서 괴로움에 몸부림칠 때가 있습니다. 우리를 그 광야로 이끄신 분이 성령 하나님이시라니까요. 예수님을 광야로 이끄신 분도 성령 하나님이셨습니다. 오늘 본문의 1절 여러분 다시 읽어봅시다. “예수께서 성령의 충만함을 입어 요단강에서 돌아오사 광야에서 사십 일 동안 성령에게 이끌리시며 마귀에게 시험을 받으시더라.”

자, 여러분, 그러니까요, 여러분 그냥 이유 없이 주시는 시험이 아닙니다. 우리를 무너뜨리려고, 우리를 넘어뜨리려고 주는 공격이 아닙니다. 그건 마귀가 주는 거고요, 우리를 광야로 이끄시는 시험은 그런 시험이 아닙니다. 성령께서 우리를 이끌어 가신 광야의 시간은 하나님의 훈련의 시간입니다. 하나님의 학교입니다. 우리는 누구나 광야 학교에 서게 됩니다. 그 학교에서 우리가 돌아보아야 할 것은 분명합니다. ‘내가 누구인가? 내가 누구인가? 내 삶은 무엇을 위한 것인가?’ 나의 정체성과 그 정체성에 걸맞은 내 삶에 주신 콜링(calling), 소명을 확인하는 시간이죠. 중요한 건 그 소명을 이루려면, 나의 정체성에 합당한 그 소명을 이루려면 도대체 내가 어떤 길을 가야 하는지, 내게 진짜 필요한 게 뭔지 그걸 알아야 되는 겁니다.

로또에 대박 나는 게 내게 진짜 필요한 건지, 주식 대박 나는 게 그게 나에게 진짜 필요한 건지, 아니면 그것이 하나도 없더라도 묵묵히 내게 주신 길을 예수님처럼 십자가 지고 자기 자신을 내어놓고 주님이 주신 그 길을 순종하며 걸어가는 것인지.

주님은 그리스도 안에서 이미 우리를 그의 사랑하는 자녀라고 부르고 계십니다. 우리는 주님을 따라 참된 영광의 길을 걸으라고 부르심을 받은 사람들입니다. 그 영광 가운데, 여러분, 세상에 육신이나 마귀가 감히 흉내 낼 수 없는 참된 행복과 성취가 있습니다. 예수님은 자신이 영광 받으시는 순간을 바로 그 십자가에서 자신이 못 박혀 돌아가시는 순간이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

중요한 것은 우리가 유혹을 받는다는 그 자체가 아니라, 우리가 그 유혹을 어떻게 마주 대하고 그 유혹을 어떻게 다루는가 하는 그 방식이 중요한 겁니다. 주님은 거기서부터 승리하셨습니다. 처음부터 끝까지 승리하셨습니다. 주님은 광야에서 시작하실 때도 승리하셨고, 주님은 겟세마네에서도 승리하셨고, 주님은 십자가까지 끝까지 승리하셨습니다. 그리고 우리도 우리를 부르신 주님을 따라 우리가 광야에 서 있을 때나, 겟세마네에서 몸부림칠 때나, 십자가 위에 피 흘릴 때나 언제나 끝까지 승리하는 주의 자녀가 되어야 할 줄로 믿습니다.

우리가 그 일에 끝까지 승리하지 않으면, 우리가 아무리 큰일을 해내도, 우리가 아무리 대단한 능력을 가지고 엄청난 업적을 남겨도, 그 업적이 하나님의 영광을 위한 것이 아니고 하나님 나라의 가치를 드러내는 것이 아니고, 그것이 마귀의 손에 붙들려서 마귀가 우리를 옭아매는 도구로 쓰일 수도 있다는 사실입니다. 여러분, 오늘 우리는 어디에 있습니까?

오늘 우리의 삶의 자리가 비록 저 굶주리고 목마른 광야일지라도, 예수께서 그곳에서 하나님의 말씀으로 그 모든 유혹과 욕망을 올바로 분별하며 한 걸음 한 걸음 하나님 나라의 가치를 향해 나아가셨던 것처럼, 오늘 저와 여러분도 말씀을 통한 올바른 분별력을 가지고 우리의 삶을 미혹하는 모든 것들을 극복하고 이겨내고 물리치고 하나님 나라의 가치를 위하여 내가 누구인지를 바로 깨닫고, 나를 부르신 삶의 목적이 무엇인지를 깨닫고 그 길을 향하여 우리 주님 걸어가신 방식으로, 우리 주님 승리하신 방식으로 한 걸음씩 한 걸음씩 뚜벅뚜벅 온전히 순종의 길을 걸어가는 저와 여러분 되시기를 주의 이름으로 축원합니다.

The Way of the Cross, Not the Way of the World

Everyone, today I would like to talk about the superheroes you all love. Do you like Superman? Anyone here who likes Superman? Raise your hand if you prefer Batman, if you are a Batman fan. Oh, then what if you dislike both and prefer Spider-Man? Raise your hand if you like Spider-Man. Yes, we call them superheroes. In short, superheroes refer to people with supernatural powers so strong that they have no rivals, no adversaries.

Watching these superheroes when I was a child, I used to think, “Ah, if they fight each other—since they say they have no rivals—if those rival-less superheroes fight among themselves, who would win?” When I was agonizing over this, it seems movie directors had the exact same thought. That is why The Avengers movies came out, where superheroes appear and fight together. Yes, if I think it, it gets made. And there is one more thing I thought about back then. It was when I was in Sunday school.

“Then, if Jesus and Superman fight, who would win?” Everyone, who do you think would win? Uh, of course, it’s Jesus. It’s a given. I actually asked that question to my Sunday school teacher back then. When I asked my Sunday school teacher, what kind of answer do you think I got? I got a flick on the forehead. I got scolded for talking nonsense. Yes, looking back now, yes, it was a comment worthy of a flick on the forehead. Jesus is not Superman. Yes, I clearly realize that now.

But a few years ago, when I was still ministering in the United States, the theme for the children’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) came out as “Jesus is my superhero.” That was the VBS theme in America. Of course, it was probably used as a tool to connect with the children so they would find it fun and engaging, but in my mind, I thought, “Uh, isn’t that a bit off?” I felt that way. I believe there is a bit of a problem with this. Could it be that we think of Jesus as if He were Superman?

Why is this a problem? Because it means we believe in, create, and want to portray a Jesus who can do whatever He wants, who can change reality as He pleases—or rather, a Jesus who can do that for us. But is that biblical? We always have to ask that question. Is that biblical? Is that the image of Jesus that the Bible shows us? No, it is not. The image of Jesus that the Bible shows us is not that of Superman. He is completely, totally different from Superman.

Now, everyone, in chapter 3, right before Luke chapter 4 which we read today, the genealogy of Jesus appears. What appears? The genealogy. Now, Luke recorded the genealogy of Jesus down to the last detail, but why? It is to show that Jesus was born within a human lineage. Through that genealogy, he confirms that Jesus is a real human being born within human lineage. In short, Jesus came as a human being who possessed flesh and blood just like us.

Why is this important? Now, everyone, the One who is being tempted by the devil in the wilderness—what did He possess just like us? Flesh and blood. In short, this temptation was “no joke,” as young people say these days, even for Jesus. Some people might think, “He is Jesus, isn’t He the Son of God? He must have overcome it with ease.” But it was not an easy temptation. Why? Because He, too, was a human being with flesh and blood just like us.

Of course, He is the almighty God. However, the Bible says that He came to this earth as a 100% complete human being just like us, and as a complete human being, He endured the most severe temptations known to humanity—the temptation of hunger, the temptation of authority and glory, and the temptation of human approval and popularity. He experienced all those trials intensely—not casually, loosely, or easily, but truly intensely. Everyone, what was the pain Jesus experienced on the cross like? Because He is the Son of God, did He get through it easily? No.

On that cross, Jesus cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” The agony was so far from ordinary that He struggled and appealed desperately before God. Likewise, we must clearly confirm and feel that this trial He experienced in the wilderness was not something He passed through as a joke, formally, or casually. Jesus truly, genuinely faced the temptation of sin that we feel in the most serious manner. That temptation was unbearably painful for Jesus as well. However, the Lord did not avoid it; He confronted it, and in the end, He overcame it with the Word.

Now, everyone, we clearly confirm who Jesus is. As the writer of Hebrews says, the High Priest we have is not someone who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. Jesus is not someone who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses. He is not someone who cannot have mercy on us. Why? Why? Because He experienced our weaknesses in the exact same way. He experienced and felt the exact same pain that we suffer because we are weak. Therefore, He truly sympathizes and has mercy. However, there is one thing: He was tempted in every way as we are, yet He was without sin. I hope you believe that He did not lose to that temptation but overcame it.

But what we need to know is when this temptation took place. What is important is that this is the exact moment Jesus was just beginning His public ministry. It says that immediately after being baptized in the Jordan River, He went out into the wilderness and was tempted. Look at verse 1:

“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days…” (Luke 4:1)

Therefore, Jesus’ baptism is the very moment He begins His public ministry as the Messiah, the Son of God. He is beginning His ministry as the King who establishes the kingdom of God on this earth.

Shall we see what Luke says about that scene? It is Luke chapter 3. Let’s look from verse 21:

“Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened…” (Luke 3:21)

It says the heavens were opened—the heavens that had been closed.

“…and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven…” (Luke 3:22)

Whose voice is it? It is the voice of God the Father, God the Holy Spirit. So, the Holy Spirit descends like a dove, the voice of God the Father is there, and God the Son, Jesus Christ, is baptized in the Jordan River. In this moment where the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are together, what does God the Father say?

“…’You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.'” (Luke 3:22)

At this point, when Jesus was baptized and began His public ministry, the question posed to us—the question we must think about—is exceedingly clear. If He is a King, then what kind of king is He trying to be? Not all kings are the same, right? What kind of king will He be? How will He be different from the kings who existed until now? His kingdom, that kingdom He proclaimed—what on earth kind of kingdom is it? Everyone, this is what is important. This is the question we must have at this very moment. We are going to read through the Gospel of Luke, and this is the question we must seek answers to through Luke: What kind of kingdom is it? What kind of king is He?

“The Son of God.” Yes, it said He is the Son of God. “The Messiah.” That’s right. “A man of the Holy Spirit.” Because the Holy Spirit was poured out upon Him. It said He is the Son whom God loves and in whom He is well pleased. If so, as such a Son of God, the Messiah, and the King of the kingdom of God, how on earth is He different from the other kings in this world? You must focus your attention there.

Everyone, in the time of Jesus, there were actually already many people who called themselves the Messiah. There were many so-called self-proclaimed messiahs in that era who appeared among the people, claiming they would act as their king, that they would liberate them from the power of Rome, drew their swords, but were suppressed by Rome and died by crucifixion.

However, today’s text says that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. At the moment He proclaims the kingdom of God as King and begins His public ministry, He did not go to a place where there were many people, He did not march straight into the city of Jerusalem, but where did He go? The wilderness, the wilderness. A desert where no one is around. Who was it that led Him there? God the Holy Spirit. And we see Him receiving three questions while being tempted by the devil there.

Therefore, is this temptation closely connected to His beginning His ministry on this earth as the Son of God, the Messiah, and the King of the kingdom of God, or is it not? It is connected. You must see that. The questions and trials He receives as King, and how He overcomes them—through these words, we come to know what kind of king He is and what kind of kingdom His kingdom is.

Then let us look once more at the three temptations He experienced in the wilderness, contents we already know well. What is the first one? “Command these stones to become what?” “Become bread.” Yes, listen to what the devil says. The devil said to Him, “If you are the Son of God…” The devil knows that Jesus is the Son of God. And he does not deny it. He does not oppose it openly. Instead, he says, “Right, you are the Son of God. If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

He has been fasting for 40 days now. To the hungry Jesus, he says to command the stones to become bread. “Aren’t you the Son of God? Isn’t this what God would want? Would He leave you, His Son, to starve to death? So, make even the stones into bread. God would want that too.” Everyone, this is the point. We always think that way. “What is good for me is also good for God.” Therefore, “What I want, God wants too.” That is the exact point where it is easy for us to fall, using our desires.

What does Jesus answer? Look at verse 4. Jesus answered him,

“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.'” (Luke 4:4)

The important thing is not my desire. Before blindly justifying it by following my desire and thinking, “God must want that too, because what is good for me is good for God”—before justifying our desires and needs—what matters is that we must be able to discern through the Word. Is this a question that truly accords with the Word? What kind of God is He to us?

Jesus also gave this answer through the Word. It is a passage from Deuteronomy chapter 8:

“And he humbled you and let you hunger…” (Deuteronomy 8:3)

Who did? God did. God led them into the wilderness.

“…and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know…” (Deuteronomy 8:3)

There is a reason for it all.

“…that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 8:3)

There is a reason why God leads us into the wilderness, why God lets us hunger, and why God lets us suffer want. It is to make us know that our lives are preserved and sustained by every word that comes from the mouth of God, and that our life is found there. That’s right. I hope you know that the important thing is not our immediate needs and desires, but discerning what the Word of God says.

What is the second temptation? The devil takes Jesus up to a high place. In a split second, he shows Him all the kingdoms of the world. “All this authority and their glory I have,” he said. The devil claims he has all the authority of the world. Why? Since sin entered this earth, God handed it over to his hands. That is why the devil is called the ruler of this world. The devil, who holds the authority of this earth, says, “If you just bow down to me once, if you just bend to me once, I will give all of this to you. It’s just once, once. It’s just once, so what’s the big deal?”

Everyone, the devil knew very well that Jesus came to this earth as the King of that kingdom. From the time Jesus was born, the angel Gabriel spoke to Mary. He said He would be the sovereign. To be the sovereign means to possess all the glory, authority, and power of all the kingdoms of the world anyway, so since it will be His eventually, what’s wrong with it? If He can put it all in His hands with just one nod, then He can take it and use it for good purposes according to God’s will, right? So, what’s the big deal since it’s just once?

Everyone, such temptations rush in countless times, not only to Jesus but to all of us who are children of God. “What’s the big deal, it’s just once? You just need to close your eyes once, you just need to let it slide once, you just need to deceive once, you just need to bend once.” If I sell my conscience, my soul, just once, can I get it back? Even if the devil puts those things into my hands, even if the world hands them over to me, can they be used in that spectacular history of God’s kingdom that makes me truly happy according to the original purpose of my life as a child of God following the values of that kingdom, and blesses everyone who is with me? In such a manner?

Everyone, wearing the mask of pragmatism too often, we easily accept and compromise with the devil’s temptations before us. “Aey, what’s the big deal, it’s just once? As long as we get to Seoul, it doesn’t matter which way we go. Even if you earn money like a dog, you just have to spend it like a nobleman.” As I always tell you: Money earned like a dog cannot be spent like a nobleman.

Everyone, just because the goal is justified does not mean any means is acceptable. Absolutely not. Jesus simply and honestly obeyed the Word. Looking at verse 8 of today’s text, Jesus answered him,

“It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'” (Luke 4:8)

This word was also given to the people of Israel in the wilderness. It is a passage from Deuteronomy chapter 6, starting from verse 12:

“…then take care lest you forget the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are around you…” (Deuteronomy 6:12-14)

The gods of the peoples who are around me—the seven nations that enjoyed the abundance of Canaan, Egypt that enjoyed the abundance of the Nile River, their gods. They say, “You must serve gods like ours so that you can also eat well, be prosperous and strong, and live well. You must serve Baal, Asherah, and Chemosh immorally according to your desires in this manner, so that you too can enjoy abundance. That’s how life in the world is.” The devil shows us even today. How we can hit the jackpot, how we can become powerful people and trample the weak under our feet.

An individual may be a perfectly fine and honest Christian, but when moving toward a group or community, how can they close their eyes so easily to selfish and evil things? “Hey, it can’t be helped for the benefit of the community. For the majority of us to do well, we have to endure that much sacrifice. Hey, for our country to prosper, even if someone cries tears of blood, we must run for national wealth and military strength.”

Lest they imitate the seven nations of Canaan and follow Egypt for the sake of that national wealth and military strength, God pleaded with them again and again in Deuteronomy before they crossed the Jordan River. “When you have a king later, and that king sends people to Egypt to buy horses and chariots in order to lead you to wealth and strength, you must absolutely never do that.” You must absolutely never look toward Egypt. Do not return to Egypt. Do not even look at Egypt. The kingdom God desires to establish among us is not a kingdom like Egypt.

Third, what the devil tempted Jesus with was to seek human approval. He told Him to go up to a high place, the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem, and throw Himself down. If He jumps, since He is the Son of God, a precious person to God, God will send even angels to hold His feet so He won’t fall, and when such amazing things happen, people will see it and say, “Wow, he is an incredible person. A great person. That man will be our king.” Won’t they follow you? Everyone, the most important thing for people in politics is to show off. Showing them. You’ve seen it. We are seeing it every day lately. On TV, on the streets, trying somehow to get recognized, to show themselves off, crying out, “I am good at this. I can do well. Please look at me.” Yes, yesterday afternoon while I was organizing and preparing the sermon, it was so incredibly loud and noisy outside that words cannot describe it.

However, everyone, listen to the whispering voice of the devil’s temptation: “If Jesus is the King of Israel, shouldn’t He prove that He is the Messiah with spectacular power?” What did Jesus answer? Look at verse 12. Jesus answered him,

“It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'” (Luke 4:12)

This was exactly what the people of Israel failed at in the wilderness. Looking at Deuteronomy chapter 6, verse 16:

“You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah. You shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies and his statutes which he has commanded you.” (Deuteronomy 6:16-17)

Do not think about testing God, but obey God’s Word exactly as it is. That is faith. That is exactly what God makes Israel learn in the wilderness. Do not try to test God with great things that are visible to the eye, but learn to obey silently before that Word and live according to it. It says that is what is right and good in the sight of the LORD. If you do that, if you live that way, God will surely take care of it and bless you. That is exactly the life they had to learn in the wilderness. However, Israel complained for food, complained for water, brought disaster upon themselves through idolatry, and constantly tested God.

But now, Jesus Christ has stood among them. He, who is the only begotten Son of God, the Son whom God loves and is well pleased with—in short, as His firstborn, the only begotten firstborn Son of God representing Israel—He is accomplishing the very thing Israel failed at. He passes through the waters of baptism just as Israel passed through the Red Sea, and now, for the future destiny of all Israel, He confronts the three questions at which Israel failed.

How can Jesus save Israel? How can Jesus accomplish God’s redemptive purpose of saving all nations through Israel? How can He lead all those people to the path of true liberation from the power of sin, death, and the devil? The answer begins right here. Everyone, He has overcome the power of the devil. I hope you believe that Jesus is the One who won completely from beginning to end.

He was victorious in the wilderness, He was victorious in Gethsemane, and He walked the path of victory to the very end on the cross. In that battle where we ourselves cannot win, we unite with Him who has already won, receive the Holy Spirit who is His Spirit poured out by Him, and advance toward the path of victory with Him by His power, the power of the Holy Spirit. I hope you believe that we will eventually and overwhelmingly overcome every trial and temptation that faces us, not by our power, but by His power, by His Holy Spirit. I hope you believe that He who called us righteous will justify us, sanctify us by His Holy Spirit, and place us in a position to overcome the devil’s temptations through that righteousness and holiness.

Then, what is important here is the way Jesus responds to the devil. It is important to see His method. Jesus did not argue with the devil. He did not bicker or dispute with him. He did not put on a headband to fight. He simply quoted the Word of God, the Scriptures, used the Scriptures to discern, and drove away the temptations and desires given by the devil. But all these scriptural verses appearing here—we saw them all. Where did they come from? Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy. What is Deuteronomy? It gives us the story of the wilderness life, Israel’s wilderness story, and the life lessons Israel learned in the wilderness.

Jesus will become the true Master of the world. However, when He stands as the Master of the world and the King who rules that world, He does not cling to status like the devil or the world. He does not lust for power. He does not build it using material wealth and popularity. I hope you believe that He comes to the place of humble service and carries out all His rule by obeying the words of God the Father to the very end.

Now, everyone, look at the miracles Jesus performs. He did not perform miracles to show Himself off. Rather, in most cases, as He performed miracles, He said, “Do not tell people, do not reveal it to people.” When He exercised the power of healing, it was not to boast of His own ability, but to restore life and courage to the weak and dying lives. Jesus never did such things to put on a show like some cheap medicine peddler. Jesus is not Superman, I tell you. Jesus is not a magician.

Therefore, everyone, if there are those who boast of and display that power as if it belonged to them like a magician, claiming, “You must follow me to receive such grace,” you must be able to discern the fact that they are not those who resemble Jesus, but those who resemble the tempter, the deceiver, the devil, Satan.

Jesus’ status as the Son of God was not for flaunting, revealing, or boasting, but through humility and service, it ultimately led Him to the path of death on the cross, giving Himself as a ransom for many. The enemy is tempting Jesus Christ, who resolved to walk that path, that path of death, that path of the cross, trying to make Him deviate from that path. That is why he tests Him. From the very beginning of that battle, Jesus won in a completely different way, a way entirely different from the kings of the world. Therefore, everyone, thinking that you can preach Jesus through the methods of worldly politics is a complete and total delusion from beginning to end. That we can somehow preach Jesus and expand the kingdom of God through the political arena? Not a chance. That is a delusion. Everyone, Jesus walks the path of victory that is entirely different from the world to the very end. And where is the completion of that victory achieved? On the cross.

Jesus’ victory is possible only by rightly discerning the Word of God. And it is the same for us. We must rightly discern between our own desires and God’s will. “Ah, because it’s good for me, and God said He loves me, if it’s good for me, it must be good for God too.” Not a chance. You must discern through the Word whether the Word of God truly considers it valuable, whether it says it is truly okay to live that way. You must know the fact that overcoming the enticing temptations of the devil, which fuel our desires and self-display, solely through the Word is the only way we can walk the path of the calling to which the Lord has called us, the only way to walk that path to the very end.

An important fact we must not forget is that even Jesus was tempted. Therefore, everyone, if I am tested and struggle with temptation, that is natural. Do not be too distressed by that itself. Do not be too afraid of it. We receive temptations. Of course, it’s hard. Any of us can have times when we stand in the wilderness and writhe in pain. The One who led us into that wilderness is God the Holy Spirit. The One who led Jesus into the wilderness was also God the Holy Spirit. Let’s read verse 1 of today’s text again:

“And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.” (Luke 4:1-2)

Now, everyone, therefore, it is not a trial given without reason. It is not an attack given to destroy us or trip us up. That kind of attack is what the devil gives, but the trial that leads us into the wilderness is not that kind of trial. The time in the wilderness where the Holy Spirit leads us is God’s time of training. It is God’s school. Any of us will stand in the wilderness school. What we must look back on in that school is clear: “Who am I? What is my life for?” It is a time to confirm my identity and the calling given to my life that matches that identity. The important thing is, to fulfill that calling, to fulfill that calling fitting for my identity, what kind of path on earth must I take, and what is it that I truly need? We must know that.

Is hitting the jackpot in the lottery what I truly need? Is hitting the jackpot in the stock market what I truly need? Or, even if I have none of those things, is it to silently take up my cross like Jesus, lay myself down, and walk in obedience along the path the Lord has given?

The Lord is already calling us His beloved children in Christ. We are people who have been called to walk the path of true glory following the Lord. In that glory, everyone, lies true happiness and fulfillment that the world, the flesh, or the devil dare not imitate. Jesus spoke of the moment He receives glory as the very moment He is crucified and dies on the cross.

The important thing is not the fact itself that we are tempted, but the method—how we face that temptation and how we handle it—that method is what is important. The Lord won from that point onward. He won from beginning to end. The Lord won when He started in the wilderness, the Lord won in Gethsemane, and the Lord won to the very end, up to the cross. And we, too, following the Lord who called us, whether we are standing in the wilderness, writhing in Gethsemane, or shedding blood upon the cross, must become children of the Lord who win always and to the very end.

If we do not win to the very end in that matter, no matter how great a work we accomplish, no matter what spectacular ability we have and leave tremendous achievements, that achievement will not be for the glory of God, it will not reveal the values of the kingdom of God, but it can even be caught in the hands of the devil and used as a tool for the devil to bind us. Everyone, where are we today?

Even if the place of our life today is that hungry and thirsty wilderness, just as Jesus correctly discerned all temptations and desires with the Word of God there and advanced step by step toward the values of the kingdom of God, today I pray that you and I will also have the right discernment through the Word, overcome, conquer, and drive away all things that deceive our lives, rightly realize who we are for the values of the kingdom of God, realize what the purpose of life that called us is, and toward that path, in the way our Lord walked, in the way our Lord won, step by step, with a steady stride, walk the path of complete obedience.
