얼마 전에 제가 프로그램을 하나 보았는데요. ‘유퀴즈’라고 하는 프로그램입니다. 혹시 알고 계십니까? 많이 보시는군요. 괜찮습니다. 그 프로그램에 조우진이라고 하는 배우가 나와서 대담하고 이야기를 나누는 장면을 보았는데, 아 참 마음이 여러 가지로 생각하게 하는 그런 프로그램이 아니었는가 생각이 듭니다. 조우진이라고 하는 이 배우가 요즘에는 아주 잘나가는 배우인 것이죠. 예, 고개를 끄덕하시는 분도 계시고 그렇습니다.
이분이 일약 스타가 되게 된 계기는 ‘내부자들’이라고 하는 영화에서 조 상무라고 하는 역할을 맡아 아주 참 잔인한 악마 악당의 역할을 잘해서 일약 스타가 되었는데요. 그렇게 스타가 되기 전까지 무명의 배우 시절이 있었습니다. 대부분의 모든 배우들이 무명의 시절들이 많이 있는데요. 이 배우는 얼마나 많은 무명의 시절을 보냈냐면은 16년이라고 하는 무명의 시절을 보냈다고 해요. 그 16년이라고 하는 기간이 결코 짧지 않은 기간이었다고 생각이 드는데, 하루는 TV 드라마에 출연할 수 있겠다고 하는 연락을 받고 실컷 나갔는데 분위기가 좀 이상하더래요. 분장하시는 분도 좀 그렇고, 알고 봤더니 캐스팅 디렉터가 실수로 2명을 부른 거예요. 그래서 다른 사람은 출연하고 자기는 어디 있을지도 모르고 어떻게 해야 될지도 모르고 당황스러운 상황 가운데서 그냥 아무런 역할도 맡지 못한 채 집으로 돌아왔다고 하는 이야기를 하는 것을 들었습니다.
그렇게 출연하기 전에 친구들한테 가족들한테 기뻐서 연락을 막 했겠죠. 하면서 “나 드디어 텔레비전 나오게 됐다고, 단역이지만 역할을 맡아서 하게 되었다”고 많은 사람들한테 응원의 이야기를 부탁하고 그러면서 나갔는데, 아무런 역할도 못 하고 그냥 돌아오게 되는 그때 휴대폰을 꺼버리고 그리고 소주 2병을 사서 서울의 지하 단칸방에 들어가 그냥 혼자 참 자신의 신세를 한탄하는 그런 씁쓸한 시간을 보낸 적이 있노라고 고백하는 이야기를 들으면서 마음이 짠하다는 그런 생각을 느끼게 됐습니다. 그런 배우인데, 그런데 그 사람이 언제 일약 스타가 되었는가? 영화 하나 잘 만나가지고 그래서 스타가 되고 그 이후로는 잘나가게 되는 것이죠. 지금은 광고도 많이 찍고 드라마도 많이 나가고 영화도 많이 나가고 하면서 그의 인생이 피게 되었다고 하는 이야기를 듣게 됐습니다. 어쩌면 수많은 무명의 배우들이 “나도 그렇게 그런 기회를 한번 잡아서 나도 그렇게 일약 스타가 되는 기회를 잡았으면 좋겠다, 내게도 그런 때가 있으면 좋겠다”고 기다리면서 절치부심하고 있는 것이 아닐까 싶습니다.
그런데 성경에 보면 오늘 우리가 살펴보고자 하는 이 다윗이라고 하는 사람도 어느 순간에 일약 스타가 될 수 있는 그런 기회를 잡은 적이 있었습니다. 그게 언제였을까요? 골리앗과의 싸움인 것이죠. 다윗이 누구였는가? 일개 소년에 불과했습니다. 어느 한 지방의 양을 치고 있던 양치기에 불과했던 것이죠. 그 누구도 알아보지 못하는 그냥 평범한 인생을 살고 있던 다윗에게 그 어느 날 일약 스타가 될 수 있는 그런 기회를 잡게 된 것이 골리앗과의 싸움이었습니다. 그 블레셋과의 전쟁 가운데서 모든 사람들이 벌벌 떨고 있을 때 다윗은 하나님을 의지하고 나가서 물맷돌로 골리앗을 쓰러뜨렸고, 그리고 그 결과 다윗은 일약 스타가 되고 말았습니다. 그러면 그다음은 어떤 단계가 나와야 정상적이라고 말할 수 있을까요? 조우진 배우처럼 그다음에는 일이 술술 잘 풀리고 탄탄대로가 열리는 게 정상이라고 할 수 있을 것 같습니다.
하지만 다윗의 경우에는 정반대의 길을 겪게 되었습니다. 왜냐하면 사울 왕이 다윗을 시기하고 질투하면서 다윗을 죽이겠다고 하는 마음을 먹었기 때문에 그런 것이죠. 개선하고 돌아오는 그 길 가운데서 여인들이 노래를 부르기를 “사울이 죽인 자는 천천이요, 다윗이 죽인 자는 만만이로다” 하는 그 말에 사울 왕의 마음이 뒤틀려지기 시작하고 불편해서 “이 다윗을 죽이지 아니하면 내가 죽겠다, 다윗을 없애야만 내가 살겠다”고 하는 그런 생각으로 그날 이후로 다윗을 죽이는 데 혈안이 되어 버려서 다윗의 인생은 풀린 것이 아니라 오히려 되레 꼬여버린 인생을 살게 된 것이 다윗의 인생이었습니다. 그 뒤로 다윗은 도망자의 삶을 살 수밖에 없었습니다.
마치 산적 두목처럼 이산 저산을 다니면서 그리고 피난의 길을 다녀야만 했던 그런 고난의 삶을 살 수밖에 없었는데, 어쩌면 이런 상황 가운데서 다윗은 절망하고 다윗은 무너질 수 있는 이런 상황이 있었음에도 불구하고 놀랍게도 다윗은 그 기간 동안에 절망하지 않았습니다. 소주 2병을 사서 괴로워하면서 좌절한 것이 아니라 놀랍게도 다윗은 그 기간을 어떻게 보냈는가? 정말 열심히 살았습니다. “하나님께서 나를 왜 이곳에 보내셨는가? 나를 이곳에 보내신 이유가 이런 일을 하라고 하는구나” 그러면서 자신에게 찾아온 수많은 억울한 사람들, 가난한 사람들, 여러 가지 문제가 있는 사람들을 보듬어주고 품어주고, 그 사람들을 도와주면서 비록 왕이 아니지만 자신에게 찾아온 사람들을 도와주면서 신실하게 삶을 살 수 있었고, 그러한 과정의 인고의 시간을 많이 지난 다음에 나중에 왕이 될 수가 있었는데요.
다윗은 이렇게 힘들고 어려운 고난의 순간에, 절망적인 상황 가운데 있을 때, 일이 꼬이고 막히고 죽음의 문턱 앞에 서 있던 이 다윗에게, 이 다윗이 무너지지 않고 견딜 수 있었던 이유가 있었다고 하면 무엇이라고 생각하십니까? 저는 그것은 다윗의 믿음에 있었다고 생각을 하게 되는데요. 다윗에게는 어떤 믿음이 있었는가 우리가 추측해 본다고 한다면 다윗은 하나님에 대한 믿음이 있었을 것이라고 믿습니다. 하나님을 어떻게 바라본 거죠? 하나님이 나의 목자시다. 다윗이 쓴 시편 23편의 고백처럼 “하나님이 나의 목자시다. 여호와는 나의 목자시니 내게 부족함이 없으리로다”라고 하는 고백으로 믿음을 가지고 살아가게 된 것이죠. 지금이 힘들고 어려운 시간입니다. 사울 왕에 의해서 죽을 수도 있는 그런 위험한 상황 가운데 지내고 있습니다. 마치 사망의 음침한 골짜기를 가는 것과 같아요.
하지만 그런 상황 가운데서도 왜 다윗은 절망하지 않았는가, 왜 다윗은 담대하게 일어설 수 있었겠는가? 하나님이 나의 목자라고 하는 사실을 믿었기 때문일 거라고 생각이 듭니다. 그래서 지금은 힘들고 어려운 상황을 지나가고 있지만, 이렇게 힘들고 어려운 상황을 지나가는 것이 결국은 내가 망하게 되고, 결국은 내가 완전히 사라질 수밖에 없는 그런 상황에 내가 들어간 것이 아니라, “여호와는 나의 목자시니 지금 사망의 골짜기를 지나가지만 이 골짜기를 지나가면 무엇이 기다리고 있을까? 푸른 초장이 나올까?” 이 사망의 음침한 골짜기를 지나가면 이 목자가 나를 이곳으로 인도하고 있지만, 이 골짜기를 지나가면 무엇이 기다리고 있어요? 물가가 나오는 것이, 쉴 만한 물가가 나오는 것입니다. 그래서 다윗의 고백이 무엇입니까? 시편 23편 4절의 말씀에 “내가 사망의 음침한 골짜기로 다닐지라도 해를 두려워하지 않을 것은 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라 주의 지팡이와 막대기가 나를 안위하시나이다.”
인생의 가장 힘들고 어려운 고난의 길, 내가 원하는 것은 안 되고, 시도했던 것마다 다 망가져 버리고, 내 인생이 풀리지 않고 무명의 시절만 지나가게 되고, 다른 사람들이 나를 바라보면서 너는 실패자라고 말하는 그런 일들이 내 앞에 펼쳐지고 있다고 할지라도, 이것이 두려워할 것이 아니라 걱정할 것이 아니라 담대할 수 있었던 이유가 무엇인가? 여호와는 나의 목자이시기 때문에 하나님께서 내 길을 이 길로 인도하시는 것은 나를 망가뜨리기 위해서가 아니라 결국에는 푸른 초장으로, 쉴 만한 물가로 인도하시는 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 믿었기 때문에 다윗은 승리의 길을 걸어갈 수 있었을 것이라고 믿습니다. 뿐만 아니라 다윗이 가지고 있었던 믿음이 무엇일까요? 그것은 바로 이 세상은 하나님께서 다스린다고 하는 믿음입니다. 지금 눈앞에는 무슨 일이 펼쳐지고 있습니까? 사울이 왕이 돼서 그래서 자신을 죽이려고 달려들고 있는 것이죠.
이 세상의 모든 사람들이 사울 왕 앞에 굴복하고 있고, 이 세상의 모든 사람들이 사울 왕의 명령 한마디에 움직이고 있어서 이 세상을 사울 왕이 장악하고 있고, 사울 왕의 뜻대로 이 세상이 돌아가는 것처럼 보이지만, 그러나 실제로 이 세상을 주관하시는 분이 누구예요? 하나님이시다. 하나님이 이 세상을 다스리시기 때문에 사울 왕이 아무리 까불어도, 사울 왕이 아무리 나를 죽이려고 달려든다고 할지라도, 하나님께서 이 세상을 다스린다고 한다면 두려워할 것이 없다고 하는 믿음으로 견뎌냈을 것이라고 믿습니다. 시편 2편 1절에서부터 4절 말씀에 보면 이런 시가 있습니다. “어찌하여 이방 나라들이 분노하며 민족들이 헛된 일을 꾸미는가 세상의 군왕들이 나서며 관원들이 서로 꾀하여 여호와와 그의 기름 부음 받은 자를 대적하며 우리가 그들의 맨 것을 끊고 그의 결박을 벗어버리자 하는도다 하늘에 계신 이가 비웃으시며 주께서 그들을 비웃으시리로다.”
사울 왕이 지금 다윗을 죽이려고 달려들고 있지만, 사울 왕이 지금 판을 치고 있지만 다윗이 두려워하지 않는 겁니다. 왜? 이 세상은 사울 왕이 다스리는 것처럼 보여도 사울 왕의 뜻대로 돌아가는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 천지를 다스린다고 하는 사실을 알기 때문에, 하나님이 다스리는 그 세상 가운데서 여호와가 나의 목자시라고 하는 그 사실을 알게 될 때 두려워할 필요가 없었다고 하는 것을 다윗이 알고 담대하게 승리하게 되었는 줄로 믿습니다. 아무리 세상의 군왕들이 설친다고 할지라도 하나님께서 약속하신 것은 무엇입니까? 어느 날 양을 치고 있던 다윗에게 하나님께서는 사무엘을 보내셔서 기름을 부으시고, “내가 너로 하여금 이스라엘의 두 번째 왕으로 삼으시겠다”고 하신 그 약속, 무너지지 않고 사라지지 않고 하나님께서 이 세상을 주관하신다고 하는 사실을 알기 때문에 두려워할 것이 없는 것이죠.
다윗이 어떻게 골리앗과 싸울 수 있었어요? 그 조그마한 소년이 어떻게 그 큰 장수와 싸울 수 있었어요? 그것은 하나님이 다스린린다고 하는 사실 때문이에요. 전쟁이 총칼에 있지 아니하고, 칼과 창에 있지 아니하고, 전쟁은 누구에게 달려 있다? 하나님에게 달려 있다. 그러니까 하나님을 믿고 의지하면서 나아갈 수가 있게 되었던 것이죠. 성경에 보면 수많은 믿음의 위인들이 있는데, 수많은 믿음의 위인들이 가지고 있었던 믿음의 공통점이 바로 그것입니다. 요셉과 같은 사람은 노예로 팔려갔고, 억울하게 감옥에 갇혀 들어갔어도 그 상황 가운데서 좌절하지 않았어요. 내 인생이 나락으로 떨어져도 좌절하지 않았습니다. 왜? 여호와는 나의 목자라고 하는 것을 알았고, 그 하나님께서 뜻이 있어서 나를 이곳에 잠시 맡겨 놓으셨다고 하는 것을 알았기 때문에 요셉은 그 어떠한 상황 가운데서도 좌절하지 않고 하나님께서 내게 맡겨주신 그 사명을 신실하게 감당하게 된 것이죠.
믿음의 사람 다니엘도 마찬가지입니다. 바벨론으로 포로로 끌려갔어요. 거기서 사자 굴에 들어가게 되었어요. 하지만 다니엘이 걱정하지 않았습니다. 두려워하지 않았습니다. 왜 그렇습니까? 하나님이 나의 하나님이니까, 하나님이 세상을 다스리니까. 이 두 가지만 기억한다고 하면 우리가 어떠한 상황 가운데 있다고 할지라도 두려워할 것이 없다고 하는 것을 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 우리 옆 사람에게 말합시다. “하나님이 나의 목자십니다. 하나님이 세상을 다스립니다.” 아멘. 그런데 어느 날 놀라운 일이 일어난 거예요. 그런 상황 가운데서 도망 다니던 다윗에게 어느 날 역전의 기회가 찾아오게 되었습니다. 이스라엘에 가보면 수많은 동굴들이 많이 있는데, 건조한 땅이라서 동굴 속에 들어가서 숨기 쉽고 동굴이 또 깊고 여러 갈래로 나눠져 있어서 동굴에 들어가서 숨기 쉬운 그런 지형에 있는데, 다윗이 도망을 다니면서 굴 속에 들어가 숨어 있었을 때였습니다.
사울이 이 다윗을 죽이기 위해서 군사들을 이끌고 쫓아오다가 한 번은 뒤를 보기 위해서 굴 속에 들어가서 한다는 것이 하필이면 다윗과 부하들이 숨어 있는 바로 그곳으로 사울 왕이 들어오게 된 것이죠. 모든 군사들을 다 내두고 혼자서 그것도 무기도 가지지 않고 다윗이 숨어 있는 바로 그 굴로 들어갔으니 호랑이 굴 속에 들어간 것이나 마찬가지입니다. 지금 이 순간에 다윗과 그 부하들이 칼로 죽여버리면 꼼짝없이 당할 수밖에 없는 그런 상황 가운데 마련하게 그런 상황을 맞이하게 된 것이죠. 이것은 어쩌면 하나님께서 주신 기회라고 생각될 만큼 아주 좋은 절호의 기회였고, 자신을 죽이려고 했던 이 사울 왕을 원수를 갚을 수 있는 절호의 찬스를 맞이하게 된 것입니다. 그러자 그 다윗의 부하들이 다윗에게 이런 이야기를 했습니다. 사무엘상 24장 4절의 말씀이죠.
“다윗의 사람들이 이르되 보소서 여호와께서 당신에게 이르시기를 내가 원수를 네 손에 넘기리니 네 생각에 좋은 대로 그에게 행하리라 하시더니 이것이 그날이니이다 하니 다윗이 일어나서 사울의 겉옷 자락을 가만히 베니라.” 지금 다윗의 부하들이 다윗에게 이야기를 하는 겁니다. “장군님, 하나님께서 장군님을 왕으로 세우시겠다고 하셨죠. 하나님께서 다윗을 왕으로 세우시겠다고 기름을 부으셨잖아요. 사울 왕이 아니고 다윗 왕을 세우시겠다고 하셨는데 그래서 승리케 해 주시겠다고 했는데, 바로 이때가 그때가 아니겠습니까?” 하나님의 선하신 뜻에 따라 사울 왕을 죽여버리고 그리고 왕으로 세워주셔서 지금 사울 왕의 지배 가운데 고통받고 있는 이 백성들을 살려주시고 제발 이 고난의 시절을 다 끝내버리고 역전해 버리라고 하는 그런 이야기를 하게 되었던 것입니다.
이런 이야기가 다윗에게 얼마나 참 위로가 되고 정말 듣기 좋은 소리가 아닐까 싶어요. 다윗의 마음 가운데도 그런 생각이 들 수 있었을 거라고 생각이 듭니다. 하지만 놀랍게도 이 순간에 다윗은 사울 왕을 죽이려고 하지 않았습니다. 놀랍게도 다윗은 무슨 이야기를 하는가? 사무엘상 24장 6절, 7절 말씀에 이런 이야기를 하고 있습니다. “자기 사람들에게 이르되 내가 손을 들어 여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 내 주를 치는 것은 여호와께서 금하시는 것이니 그는 여호와의 기름 부음을 받은 자가 됨이니라 하고 다윗이 이 말로 자기 사람들을 금하여 사울을 해하지 못하게 하니라.” 사울이 일어나 굴에서 나가 자기 길을 갔다고 성경은 기록하고 있습니다. 그 짧은 시간에 그 조급한 시간에 판단을 했는데 사울 왕을 죽이려고 하는 결단을 내린 것이 아니라 죽이지 않겠다고 뒤로 물러선 것이, 다윗이 사울 왕을 죽이지 않은 이유가 어디에 있습니까?
그것은 사울 왕이 기름 부음을 받은 사람이기 때문에, 기름 부음 받은 사람은 안 죽여야 하기 때문에, 죽이면 안 되기 때문에 안 죽인 거라고 이야기를 하고 있는데 정말 그것뿐일까요? 기름 부음을 받지 않은 사람은 죽여도 됩니까? 그게 아니에요. 나중에 우리가 살펴보게 되면 그 압살롬의 반역을 피해서 도망가던 다윗이 시무이라고 하는 사람을 만난 이야기가 사무엘하의 말씀 가운데 기록되어 있습니다. 그때 시무이라고 하는 사람은 다윗 왕을 저주하면서 욕을 하고 도망가는 그 다윗을 향해서 흙먼지를 날리고 돌을 날리면서 그렇게 다윗을 욕한 사람이 시무이라고 하는 사람입니다. 그러자 다윗의 부하들이 그를 죽이겠다고 달려들기 시작했습니다. “다윗 왕이시여, 저 시무이 저놈을 살려두면 안 됩니다. 우리가 가서 죽여버리겠다”고 이야기할 때, 다윗이 “그래 쟤는 기름 부음 안 받았으니까 죽여도 돼”라고 이야기한 것이 아니라, 놀랍게도 다윗은 무슨 이야기를 합니까?
“저 사람이 나를 저주하는 것은 하나님께서 나를 저주하라 하신 것이니 죽일 수 없다.” 하나님께서 나에게 하시는 말씀을 저 사람을 통해서 하는 것이라고 하면서 죽이는 것을 포기하게 된 것이, 다윗은 무엇을 생각했는가? 죽일 수 있는 상황 가운데서, 원수를 갚을 수 있는 상황 가운데서 원수를 갚지 않아야 할 이유를 찾은 거예요. 내가 저 사람을 죽여버리고 원수를 갚아버리고 그래서 이 모든 고난을 끝장내버릴 수 있는 그 상황 가운데서, 내가 원수를 갚지 않아야 될 이유들을 찾은 거예요. 왜 저 사람에게 원수를 갚지 않는가? 저 사람은 기름 부음 받은 사람이니까 내가 갚을 수 없다. 왜 내가 저 사람을 죽이지 않는가, 저 사람에게 원수를 갚지 않는가? 하나님께서 저 사람으로 하여금 나에게 저주하라 하심이니 내가 저 사람을 죽일 수 없다.
내가 저 사람을 죽일 수 없는 이유를 100가지, 천 가지, 만 가지라도 찾아가면서 원수를 갚는 게 하나님의 뜻이 아니라 원수 갚지 않는 것이 하나님의 뜻이라고 하는 사실을 발견하고, 놀랍게도 다윗은 이 시간에 이 순간에 원수를 갚지 않는 선택을 하게 된 것입니다. 이것이 어디에서 나왔는가? 그것은 바로 다윗의 믿음에서 나온 줄로 믿습니다. 다윗은 무엇을 믿었습니까? 다윗의 믿음이 무엇입니까? 여호와는 나의 목자라고 하는 사실을 믿은 거예요. 하나님이 이 세상을 다스린다고 하는 그 사실을 믿은 거죠. 그것은 절망의 순간뿐만이 아니라 내가 원수를 갚고 싶은 순간에도 떠오르는 생각이에요. 저 사람이 나를 괴롭게 하고, 저 사람이 말 한마디로 나를 죽이려고 하고, 저 사람이 내 것을 빼앗아가 버리고, 저 사람이 나에게 엄청난 상처를 주었지만, 그러나 그 순간에도 다윗이 기억하고 있었던 것이 무엇이냐 하면 하나님이 나의 목자시고 하나님이 이 세상을 다스린다고 하는 거예요.
내가 원수를 갚지 않아도, 내가 원수를 반드시 갚아야만 정의가 이루어지는 것이 아니라, 내가 당한 대로 그 이상으로 갚아주어야만 그래야 정의가 이루어지는 것이 아니라, 내가 원수 갚지 않아도 하나님께서 다스리시고, 하나님께서 억울한 것을 풀어주시고, 하나님께서 우리들의 마음을 받아주시고 우리들의 눈물을 닦아주시는 이 세상을 누가 다스리시는가? 하나님께서 다스리신다고 하는 사실을 믿을 때 원수를 갚을 수 있는 상황 가운데서 갚지 않고 뒤로 물러서는 선택을 할 수 있었을 줄로 믿습니다. 성경의 가르침은 무엇입니까? 우리가 하나님을 믿는다고 한다면, 하나님을 믿으면 그 자연스러운 결론이 이웃에 대한 사랑으로 나타나야 합니다. 하나님을 믿는다고 하면서 이웃을 사랑하지 않는다면, 하나님을 믿는다고 하면서 원수를 용서하지 않는다면, 하나님을 믿는다고 하면서 자비와 인내와 긍휼이 없다면 믿음이 아니에요. 하나님을 믿는다고 한다면 용서할 수 있어야 돼요. 왜? 하나님이 다스리시니까요.
하나님이 결국에는 정의를 세워주실 것이니까, 하나님께서 우리의 억울함을 풀어주실 것이니까. 만일 우리가 하나님을 믿지 않는다고 한다면 내 손으로 원수를 갚아야 하고, 하나님이 없다고 한다면 우리가 억울한 것을 내가 풀기 위해서 내가 노력해야 되고, 하나님이 계시지 않는다고 한다면 내가 내 손으로 내 이익을 쟁취해야 하지만, 하나님이 계신다고 하는 사실을 알고 믿는다고 한다면 내가 원수를 갚지 않아도 하나님께서 모든 것을 바로잡으실 거라고 하는 사실을 믿어야 하는 것이고, 결국 그것은 이웃에 대한 사랑으로 인내와 긍휼과 너그러움으로 나타날 줄로 믿습니다. 성경의 가르침은 무엇입니까? 예수님께서는 이런 말씀을 해 주셨습니다. 마태복음 5장 43절에서부터 44절의 말씀에 “또 네 이웃을 사랑하고 네 원수를 미워하라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나 나는 너희에게 이르노니 너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 박해하는 자를 위하여 기도하라.”
너희를 힘들게 하는 사람을 축복해 주고, 너를 괴롭게 한 사람을 위해서 기도해 주고, 너를 괴롭게 하는 사람에게 오히려 사랑을 베풀라. 그게 성경의 가르침이에요. 왜? “그러면 내 억울한 건 어떻게 해요? 내가 당한 건 어떻게 해요?” 하나님께서 뭐라고 말씀하십니까? 로마서 12장 19절에서부터 21절의 말씀에 “내 사랑하는 자들아 너희가 친히 원수를 갚지 말고 하나님의 진노하심에 맡기라 기록되었으되 원수 갚는 것이 내게 있으니 내가 갚으리라고 주께서 말씀하시니라 네 원수가 주리거든 먹이고 목마르거든 마시게 하라 그리함으로 네가 숯불을 그 머리에 쌓아 두리라 악에게 지지 말고 선으로 악을 이기라.” 만일 이 순간에 다윗이 부하들의 말에 따라서 사울을 죽이는 선택을 했다고 한다면 다윗이 승리하게 된 것일까요? 고난을 끝내고 다윗이 왕이 될 수 있으니까 이제는 다윗이 승리한 것이라고 말할 수 있을까요?
어쩌면 그것이 승리한 것처럼 보이지만 사실은 패배한 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 누구한테 진 것이죠? 사탄에게 진 거예요. 사탄에게 굴복한 거예요. 왕의 자리가 우상이 되고 내 욕심이 우상이 되고, 내 명예가 우상이 되고 나의 탐욕이 우상이 되어서 그 우상들을 섬기라고 하는, “너의 그 욕심을 이루기 위해서 원수를 죽여버리고 너의 자존심을 위해서 원수들을 박살 내버리라”고 하는 사탄의 말에 우리가 굴복하고 그 우상 앞에 우리가 엎드린 거예요. 사탄에게 져버리고 만 것이죠. 우리는 하나님을 믿어야 합니다. 우상을 믿는 것이 아니라, 사탄을 믿는 것이 아니라 하나님을 믿어야 하는 것이고요. 하나님을 믿을 때 우리는 이 이웃에 대한 사랑으로 너그러움으로 우리의 모습들이 나타나게 될 것입니다. 우리가 조급한 이유는 무엇인가, 우리가 내 손으로 원수를 갚으려고 하는 이유가 무엇인가? 그것은 하나님이 없다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 하지만 놀랍게도 다윗은 이 순간에 믿었습니다.
내가 지금 이 순간에 원수를 갚지 않아도 하나님께서는 결국에는 바로잡으실 것이고, 내 눈에서 눈물을 닦아주실 것이고, 하나님께서는 나를 그 약속하신 대로 왕으로 세워주실 거라고 하는 사실을 믿었기 때문에, 이 긴박한 짧은 그 순간에 부하들의 말에 귀를 기울이고 죄악을 범한 것이 아니라 하나님의 앞에 엎드려져서 하나님께서 기뻐하실 일이 무엇인가를 생각하며 믿음으로 반응하게 된 줄로 믿습니다. 다윗의 부하들은 상황을 잘못 해석한 것이죠. 지금은 ‘이 날’이 아니고, 바로 이 날이 원수를 갚을 날이 아니라 지금은 사랑하고 용서해야 될 날입니다. 지금 이 순간에 다윗이 사울을 죽여서 기회를 잡는 기회가 좋은 기회가 아니라, 하나님의 때를 기다리며 하나님께서 인도해 주실 것을 기다리는 것이 하나님께서 우리들에게 원하시는 것이라고 하는 사실을 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 오늘 우리들의 삶 가운데서도 힘들고 어려운 일들이 많이 있습니다.
사람들이 지나가면서 내던진 말 한마디가 우리들의 가슴을 후벼 파버리고 정말 견딜 수 없을 정도로 분노가 치밀게 되고, 때로는 절망스러운 상황들이 우리들 가운데 펼쳐질 때가 있습니다. 그럴 때 나 혼자 외롭다고 느낄 때, 여러 가지 문제들을 경험하게 될 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 할 것인가? 그 순간에 하나님의 뜻을 묵상하며 우리들의 마음 가운데 육체의 소리가 들리는 대로 따라 하는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 들려주시는 선한 음성에 귀를 기울이는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 안타깝게도 오늘날 다윗의 부하들과 같은 목소리를 주장하는 사람들이 판을 치는 시대가 되어 버렸습니다. “우리의 힘으로 본때를 보여주고 우리가 짓밟아 버려야 우리에게 까불지 않고, 우리가 가진 힘으로 밟아버려야 된다”고 혐오를 조장하고 증오를 조장하는 사람들이 판치는 세상에 우리가 살고 있습니다.
하지만 그 목소리에 귀를 기울일 것이 아니라 주님께서 우리에게 무슨 말씀을 해 주셨는가에 귀를 기울여야 하고, 하나님께서 무엇을 기뻐하시는가, 하나님께서 우리가 어떻게 행동하기를 원하시는가를 진지하게 묵상하면서 오늘 저와 여러분들이 주님의 뜻에 순종해야 할 것입니다. 왜 우리는 우리의 힘으로 원수를 갚을 것이 아니라 용서해야 하는 이유가 어디에 있습니까? 우리가 피해를 당해도 오히려 사랑의 손으로, 오히려 너그러운 마음으로, 오히려 사랑과 자비로 대해주어야 될 이유가 어디에 있습니까? 그것은 우리가 저 사람들보다 도덕적으로 더 뛰어나다는 것을 보여주기 위해서 그렇게 하는 것일까요? 사실은 그게 아니라 알고 보면 우리가 먼저 용서를 받았기 때문이에요. 우리가 누군가를 용서할 수 있는 사람이 아니라 사실은 이 이야기에 등장하는 사울을 더 많이 닮아 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 다윗과 사울의 이야기를 보면서 다윗이 우리일 거라고 생각하지만 사실은 그게 아니라 사울이 우리들의 모습이에요.
사울처럼 우리는 죄악을 저질렀고, 사울처럼 우리는 하나님의 뜻에 따라 살지 못했고, 늘 실패하며 늘 넘어지는 것이 바로 우리들의 모습이에요. 그런데 놀라운 것은 하나님께서 우리를 심판하지 않고 용서하셨다는 거예요. 그냥 용서하신 것이 아니라 다윗이 사울을 용서할 때, 그것은 자신이 더 이상 고생하는 것을 끊어버릴 수 있는 절호의 기회였음에도 불구하고 계속해서 고난의 길로, 계속해서 아픔의 길을 더 겪어야만 하는 그런 희생을 감수하면서까지 사울을 용서했던 것처럼, 하나님께서 우리를 어떻게 용서해 주셨는가? 우리의 죄를 용서하시기 위해서 예수님께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으시고 우리를 위하여 모든 것을 다 내어주신 하나님의 놀라운 사랑 때문에 우리 모두가 용서를 받고 구원을 얻었기 때문에, 그런 용서를 받은 우리가 하나님의 은혜 안에서 우리에게 죄지은 자를 용서하고 사랑의 손길을 내미는 것이 그것이 하나님께서 우리에게 원하시는 일이라고 하는 사실을 기억할 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
늘 넘어질 때가 많고 늘 실패할 때가 많지만 하나님께서 우리를 어떻게 사랑하셨는가 늘 다시 한번 생각하며, 무슨 일이 있을 때마다 그냥 마음속에 떠오르는 다윗의 부하들이 하는 그 말과 같은 소리들이 우리에게 들리는 대로 행동하는 것이 아니라 잠깐 멈추어 서서 우리가 얼마나 큰 은혜와 사랑을 받았는지 다시 한번 되돌아보며 주님의 뜻에 따라 순종해 나가는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
I watched a program recently called “You Quiz on the Block.” Are you familiar with it? It seems many of you watch it. That’s good. I saw a scene where the actor Jo Woo-jin came on and had a conversation, and it was a program that made me think about many things. Actor Jo Woo-jin is a very successful actor these days. Yes, I see some of you nodding.
The turning point that made him an overnight star was his role as “Director Jo” in the movie Inside Men. He played the role of a truly cruel devil-like villain so well that he became a star instantly. However, before becoming a star, he had a long period of being an unknown actor. Most actors go through such times, but this actor spent as many as 16 years in obscurity. I think 16 years is by no means a short time. One day, he received a call saying he could appear in a TV drama, so he went out full of hope, but the atmosphere felt a bit strange. The person doing makeup seemed off, and as it turned out, the casting director had accidentally called two people for the same part. So, while the other person got to perform, he didn’t even know where to stand or what to do. In that embarrassing situation, he ended up returning home without getting any role at all.
Before going to the set, he probably called his friends and family out of joy. He likely said, “I’m finally going to be on TV! It’s just a bit part, but I got a role,” and asked everyone for their support. But having to return without doing anything, he turned off his phone, bought two bottles of soju, went into his small basement room in Seoul, and lamented his lot in life. Hearing him confess about spending that bitter time alone, my heart felt heavy for him. He was that kind of actor, but when did he become an overnight star? He met the right movie, became a star, and has been successful ever since. I heard that now he films many commercials, appears in many dramas and movies, and his life has finally blossomed. Perhaps many unknown actors are waiting and grinding their teeth, thinking, “I wish I could catch an opportunity like that and become an overnight star; I wish such a time would come for me too.”
In the Bible, we see that the man we are looking at today, David, also caught an opportunity to become an overnight star at one point. When was that? It was his battle with Goliath. Who was David? He was nothing more than a mere boy. He was just a shepherd tending sheep in a local area. To David, who was living an ordinary life that no one noticed, the battle with Goliath was the chance to become an instant star. While everyone was trembling in fear during the war with the Philistines, David relied on God, went out, and struck down Goliath with a slingstone. As a result, David became an overnight star. Then, what stage should normally follow? Like actor Jo Woo-jin, it would be normal for things to go smoothly and for a royal road to open up.
However, in David’s case, he experienced the exact opposite path. This was because King Saul became jealous of David and made up his mind to kill him. On the way back from victory, the women sang, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” At those words, King Saul’s heart began to twist with discomfort. He thought, “If I don’t kill this David, I will die; I must get rid of David to live.” From that day on, he became obsessed with killing David. David’s life didn’t open up; rather, it became more entangled. From then on, David had no choice but to live the life of a fugitive.
He had to live a life of suffering, moving from mountain to mountain like a rebel leader and traveling the path of a refugee. In such a situation, David could have despaired and collapsed. Surprisingly, however, David did not despair during that period. He didn’t buy two bottles of soju and wallow in frustration; instead, how did David spend that time? He lived very diligently. He thought, “Why did God send me here? He must have sent me here to do this kind of work.” So, he embraced and took in the many wronged people, poor people, and people with various problems who came to him. Even though he wasn’t the king, he helped those who came to him and lived a faithful life. After passing through a long time of endurance in that process, he was later able to become king.
What do you think was the reason David was able to endure without collapsing when he was at a threshold of death, in a desperate situation where things were entangled and blocked? I believe it was in David’s faith. If we speculate on what kind of faith David had, I believe David had faith in God. How did he view God? “God is my shepherd.” Like the confession in Psalm 23 written by David, he lived with faith, confessing, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” It was a difficult and trying time. He was living in a dangerous situation where he could be killed by King Saul. It was like walking through the valley of the shadow of death.
Yet, even in such a situation, why didn’t David despair? Why could he stand up boldly? I believe it was because he believed in the fact that God was his shepherd. So, although he was passing through a hard and difficult situation now, entering such a situation didn’t mean he would eventually be ruined or completely disappear. “The Lord is my shepherd. I am passing through the valley of death now, but what will be waiting once I pass through this valley? Will there be green pastures?” Although the shepherd was leading him through this dark valley of death, what waits at the end of the valley? It is the waters; still waters. That is why David’s confession in Psalm 23:4 is: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Even on the hardest and most difficult path of life—when what I want doesn’t happen, when everything I attempted breaks down, when my life doesn’t open up and only years of obscurity pass by, and even when others look at me and call me a failure—why was he able to be bold instead of fearing or worrying? It was because the Lord was his shepherd. I believe David was able to walk the path of victory because he believed that God leading him on this path was not to ruin him, but ultimately to lead him to green pastures and still waters. Furthermore, what was the faith David had? It was the faith that God rules this world. What is unfolding before his eyes right now? Saul is king and is charging at him to kill him.
It seems as if everyone in the world is surrendering to King Saul, moving at his single word of command, and that King Saul has seized the world and it is running according to his will. But who is the one actually governing this world? It is God. I believe he endured with the faith that since God rules this world, there is nothing to fear even if King Saul acts up or tries to kill him. In Psalm 2:1-4, there is this poem: “Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, ‘Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.’ The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.”
King Saul is charging to kill David now, and Saul is having his way, but David is not afraid. Why? Because he knows that although it looks like King Saul rules the world, it doesn’t run according to Saul’s will, but according to the fact that God rules heaven and earth. I believe David knew this and was able to win boldly when he realized there was no need to fear in that world ruled by God, knowing that the Lord was his shepherd. No matter how much the kings of the world act out, what has God promised? David, who was tending sheep, knew that God had sent Samuel to anoint him and said, “I will make you the second king of Israel.” Because he knew that promise would not collapse or disappear and that God governs this world, there was nothing to fear.
How could David fight Goliath? How could that small boy fight such a great warrior? It was because of the fact that God rules. Victory does not lie in guns and swords, nor in spears; victory depends on whom? It depends on God. So, he was able to go forward believing and relying on God. There are many giants of faith in the Bible, and the commonality of the faith they had was exactly that. Someone like Joseph did not despair even when he was sold as a slave and wrongly imprisoned. He didn’t despair even when his life fell into an abyss. Why? Because he knew that the Lord was his shepherd and that God had a purpose for placing him there for a while. Therefore, Joseph did not despair in any situation and faithfully fulfilled the mission God entrusted to him.
It was the same for Daniel, a man of faith. He was taken as a captive to Babylon. He ended up in a lions’ den there. But Daniel did not worry. He was not afraid. Why? Because God was his God, and God rules the world. I believe we must remember that if we keep these two things in mind, we have nothing to fear regardless of our situation. Let’s say to the person next to us, “God is my shepherd. God rules the world.” Amen. Then, one day, an amazing thing happened. To David, who was running away in such circumstances, an opportunity for a reversal came. If you go to Israel, there are many caves. Being a dry land, it’s easy to hide in caves, which are deep and divided into various branches. It was a time when David was hiding in a cave while running away.
Saul was leading soldiers to kill David, and once, he went into a cave to “relieve himself” (look behind), and of all places, King Saul entered exactly where David and his men were hiding. Leaving all his soldiers behind, he entered alone and without weapons into the very cave where David was hiding; it was like walking into a tiger’s den. At this moment, if David and his men had killed him with a sword, he would have been helpless. It was a golden opportunity, so good that it could be thought of as a chance given by God, a perfect chance to take revenge on King Saul, who had tried to kill him. Then, David’s men said this to David. It is the word from 1 Samuel 24:4:
“The men said, ‘This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, “I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.”‘ Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.” Now, David’s men are talking to him. “General, God said He would establish you as king, didn’t He? God anointed David to be king. He said He would establish King David, not King Saul, and that He would give you victory. Isn’t this that very time?” They were saying that according to God’s good will, he should kill King Saul, be established as king, save the people suffering under Saul’s rule, and please end these years of suffering and reverse the situation.
How much comfort and how good to hear must such words have been for David? I think such a thought could have arisen in David’s heart as well. Surprisingly, however, David did not try to kill King Saul at that moment. What does David say? 1 Samuel 24:6-7 records this: “He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.’ With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul.” The Bible records that Saul left the cave and went his way. He made a judgment in that short, urgent time, but instead of deciding to kill King Saul, he stepped back, deciding not to kill. What was the reason David didn’t kill King Saul?
He said it was because King Saul was an anointed person, and because he must not kill an anointed person. But is that really all? Is it okay to kill someone who isn’t anointed? That’s not it. If we look later, a story is recorded in 2 Samuel about David meeting a man named Shimei while fleeing from Absalom’s rebellion. At that time, Shimei cursed King David, throwing dust and stones at the fleeing David. Then, David’s men began to rush to kill him. “King David, we cannot leave that fellow Shimei alive. We will go and kill him.” At that time, David didn’t say, “Yeah, he’s not anointed, so you can kill him.” Surprisingly, what does David say?
“If he is cursing because the Lord said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why do you do this?'” He gave up on killing, saying that God was speaking to him through that person. David looked for a reason not to take revenge in a situation where he could have killed and taken revenge. In a situation where he could have killed his enemy, ended all this suffering, and finished the job, he looked for reasons why he should not take revenge. Why not take revenge on that person? “That person is anointed, so I cannot repay him.” Why don’t I kill that person, why don’t I take revenge? “Because the Lord has told him to curse me, I cannot kill him.”
Searching for a hundred, a thousand, or ten thousand reasons why he could not kill that person, David discovered that it was not God’s will to take revenge, but God’s will not to. Surprisingly, David chose not to take revenge at that hour, at that moment. I believe this came from David’s faith. What did David believe? What is David’s faith? He believed the fact that the Lord was his shepherd. He believed the fact that God rules this world. This is a thought that comes to mind not only in moments of despair but also in moments when I want to take revenge. That person makes me suffer, tries to kill me with a single word, takes away what is mine, and has given me a huge wound; but even in that moment, what David remembered was that God is his shepherd and God rules this world.
Even if I don’t take revenge, justice is not achieved only if I take revenge. Justice is not achieved only if I repay exactly or more than what I suffered. Who governs this world where even if I don’t take revenge, God rules, God resolves the grievances, God accepts our hearts, and God wipes away our tears? When believing the fact that God governs, I believe he was able to make the choice to step back and not repay, even in a situation where revenge was possible. What is the teaching of the Bible? If we believe in God, the natural conclusion must appear as love for our neighbors. If you say you believe in God but do not love your neighbor, if you say you believe in God but do not forgive your enemy, if you say you believe in God but have no mercy, patience, or compassion, it is not faith. If you believe in God, you must be able to forgive. Why? Because God rules.
Because God will eventually establish justice, and God will resolve our grievances. If we do not believe in God, we must take revenge with our own hands. If there were no God, we would have to strive to resolve our grievances ourselves. If God did not exist, I would have to snatch my own profits with my own hands. But if we know and believe that God exists, we must believe that God will set everything right even if I don’t take revenge. Ultimately, I believe this will appear as love for neighbors through patience, compassion, and generosity. What is the teaching of the Bible? Jesus told us this. In Matthew 5:43-44: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
Bless the person who makes things hard for you, pray for the person who made you suffer, and rather bestow love on the person who causes you pain. That is the teaching of the Bible. Why? “Then what about my grievances? What about what I suffered?” What does God say? In Romans 12:19-21: “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ says the Lord. On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” If David had chosen to kill Saul at that moment according to his men’s words, would David have been victorious? Since he could end the suffering and become king, could we say that David won?
Perhaps it looks like he won, but in fact, it could be called a defeat. To whom did he lose? He lost to Satan. He surrendered to Satan. The position of king becomes an idol, my greed becomes an idol, my fame becomes an idol, and my avarice becomes an idol. We surrender to Satan’s words—”Kill your enemy to achieve your greed,” “Crush your enemies for your pride”—and we bow down before those idols. We end up losing to Satan. We must believe in God. We must believe in God, not in idols or Satan. When we believe in God, our appearance will manifest as love and generosity toward our neighbors. Why are we impatient? Why do we try to take revenge with our own hands? It is because we think God doesn’t exist. Surprisingly, however, David believed at that moment.
Because he believed that even if he didn’t take revenge right now, God would eventually set things right, wipe the tears from his eyes, and establish him as king as promised, he didn’t listen to his men’s words and commit a sin in that urgent, short moment. Instead, he prostrated himself before God, thinking about what would please God and responding with faith. David’s men misinterpreted the situation. Now is not “this day” (the day for revenge); this very day is a day to love and forgive. The opportunity for David to kill Saul and seize the chance is not a good opportunity; we must remember that waiting for God’s time and waiting for God’s guidance is what God wants from us. In our lives today, there are many hard and difficult things.
There are times when a single word someone throws while passing by gouges our hearts, and anger rises to an unbearable level. Sometimes, desperate situations unfold before us. When we feel lonely and experience various problems, what should we do? At that moment, instead of following the voice of the flesh as it is heard in our hearts, we must all become those who meditate on God’s will and listen to the good voice God gives us. Unfortunately, we live in a world where voices like those of David’s men prevail. We live in a world where people who promote hatred and loathing prevail, saying, “We must show them what we’re made of with our strength, we must trample them so they don’t mess with us, we must crush them with the power we have.”
However, we must not listen to those voices, but to what the Lord has told us. We must meditate seriously on what God is pleased with and how God wants us to act, and you and I must obey the Lord’s will today. Why shouldn’t we take revenge with our own strength, and why must we forgive? Even if we suffer damage, why must we treat them with hands of love, a generous heart, and with love and mercy instead? Is it to show that we are more morally superior than those people? Actually, it’s not that; if you look closer, it’s because we were forgiven first. It’s because we aren’t people who can inherently forgive someone, but actually resemble Saul, who appears in this story, much more. Watching the story of David and Saul, we think David is us, but actually, it’s not; Saul is our image.
Like Saul, we committed sins; like Saul, we failed to live according to God’s will; always failing and always falling—that is our image. But the amazing thing is that God did not judge us but forgave us. He didn’t just forgive; just as when David forgave Saul, he endured the sacrifice of having to experience more paths of suffering and pain even though it was a perfect chance to end his struggles, how did God forgive us? Because all of us were forgiven and obtained salvation through the amazing love of God, where Jesus died on the cross and gave everything for us to forgive our sins—remembering that we, who have received such forgiveness, forgiving those who sin against us and extending a hand of love within God’s grace is what God wants from us. I pray in the name of the Lord.
Although there are many times we fall and fail, let us always think once more about how God loved us. Instead of acting according to the voices like those of David’s men that come to mind whenever something happens, let us stop for a moment, look back once more at how much grace and love we have received, and I pray in the name of the Lord that we all become those who obey according to the Lord’s will.
