제1계명 “하나님만이 네 하나님이다” (출 20:3)
십계명 강해 세 번째 시간으로, 오늘은 십계명 가운데서 첫 번째 되는 계명에 대해서 살펴보도록 하겠습니다. 첫 번째 계명이 무엇이냐면, “너는 나 외에는 다른 신들을 네게 두지 말라” 하는 것이 첫 번째 계명입니다.
그런데 혹시 천주교에 대해서 좀 아시는 분들은, 혹시 천주교에 가보신 분이 계시다고 하면, 천주교에서 사용하는 십계명과 우리 개신교 쪽에서 사용하는 십계명이 약간 다르다고 하는 것을 알 수가 있습니다. 우리 개신교에서 사용하고 있는 십계명에서는 제1계명은 다른 신을 두지 말라고 하는 것이고, 제2계명은 우상을 만들지 말라고 하는 것이고, 세 번째가 망령되이 일컫지 말라고 하는 것인데요. 천주교에 가면 1계명과 2계명을 합해서 제1계명으로 봅니다. ‘다른 신을 네게 두지 말라, 우상을 만들지 말라’가 1계명이고, 2계명이 ‘망령되이 일컫지 말라’, 3계명이 ‘안식일을 기억하여 거룩하게 지켜라’, 4계명이 “부모를 공경하라”가 되니까, 그러면 총 9개 명이냐? 그게 아니고, 천주교에서는 제10계명을 둘로 나눕니다. 둘로 나누어서 “네 이웃의 집을 탐내지 말라”가 9계명이 되고, 10계명은 ‘네 이웃의 아내나 그의 남종을 탐내지 말라’고 하는 것이 제10계명이 되어 있습니다.
그렇게 해서 분류가 개신교에서 사용하는 그 분류법과 천주교에서 사용하는 분류법이 약간 다른데요. 이렇게 다르게 될 수 있는 이유가 무엇이냐 하면, 우리 출애굽기 20장에는 번호가 붙여져 있지 않기 때문에 그렇습니다. ‘제1은, 제2는, 제3은’ 이렇게 번호가 붙여져 있었다라고 한다면 천주교나 개신교나 다 똑같이 이런 십계명을 사용할 텐데, 번호가 붙여져 있지 않기 때문에 과연 1계명이 무엇일까에 대해서 서로 생각이 달라서 분류를 각각 다르게 하고 있는 것입니다.
그래서 이러한 사실을 알고 있는 몇몇 사람들이 천주교를 비난하면서 “천주교는 우상을 숭배하는 종교이니까 2계명을 없애버렸다”고 비난하는 이야기가 종종 나오게 됩니다. 혹시 그런 이야기를 들어보셨는지 모르겠어요. “천주교는 성모 마리아상 앞에서 기도도 하고, 아무튼 우상을 섬기는 것이 껄끄러우니까 제2계명을 없애버리고, 그래서 1계명에다가 우상에 관한 것을 합쳐버리고 2계명을 망령되이 일컫지 말라고 붙였다”고 맹비난을 하는 사람들이 개신교 쪽에 조금 있습니다.
하지만 그렇게 비난할 것까지는 아니라고 생각이 돼요. 왜냐하면 물론 천주교 쪽에서 성모 마리아상 앞에서 기도한다든지 그런 모습들을 보이는 것은 잘못된 것이겠지만, 천주교 쪽에서 십계명의 제2계명, 우상을 만들지 말라고 하는 그 계명을 없애버린 것이 아니라, 정확하게 사실을 팩트 체크하면 좋을 텐데요. 없애버린 것이 아니라 우상을 만들지 말라고 하는 그 계명을 제1계명에 붙여서 생각하는 것뿐이지, 이 계명을 없애버린 것은 아니기 때문에 열 받으실 필요가 없을 것이라고 생각을 합니다. 더군다나 천주교 쪽에서만 그렇게 사용하는 것이 아니라, 개신교파 가운데서도 일부 교파는 천주교에서 사용하는 십계명의 분류 방식을 사용하고 있는 것이고, 어차피 분류만 어떻게 했느냐가 다를 뿐이지 그 출애굽기 20장의 말씀을 그대로 십계명으로 사용하고 있다고 하는 점에 있어서 천주교를 그렇게 맹비난하는 것은 과도한 것이라 생각이 듭니다.
아무튼 오늘은 제1계명의 말씀을 살펴보려고 하는데요. **“너는 나 외에는 다른 신들을 네게 두지 말라”**고 하나님께서 말씀하시고 계시는데, 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하시고 있는 그 배경이 무엇일까요? 왜 하나님께서는 이런 말씀을 하고 계시는 걸까요? 그것은 이스라엘 민족들이 지금까지 살아왔던 그 환경이 다신교 환경 속에서 살아왔기 때문에 그렇습니다. 지금 이스라엘 민족이 시내산에서 하나님으로부터 계명을 받기 전에 어디에 있다가 나왔죠? 애굽에 있다가 나왔습니다. 그런데 그 애굽이라고 하는 나라는 어떤 나라냐 하면 다신교 시스템 속에서 돌아가는 나라였습니다. 우상이 하나가 아니라 여러 가지 우상이 있는 겁니다. 그래서 각종 우상들을 만들어 놓고 경우에 따라서 이런 우상 저런 우상을 섬기던 그런 환경 속에서 살던 이스라엘 민족이, 이제 가나안 땅으로 돌아가는 그 가운데서 하나님과 계약을 맺고 하나님만 섬기자고 하는 그런 언약 가운데서 하나님의 백성이 됐는데, 그런 백성들에게 하나님께서 해주시는 말씀이 무엇이냐면 너희들이 애굽 땅에서 보았던 것처럼 신을 여러 신을 섬기지 말고, 오직 하나님, 참되신 하나님 그 하나님만을 섬기라고 말씀해 주고 있는 겁니다.
하나님을 섬길 때 사람들이 하나님도 섬기고 동시에 부처도 섬기고 알라도 섬기고 그렇게 하면 좋겠죠? 많은 사람들이 좋다고 생각합니다. 왜냐하면 아무나 걸리면 되니까요. 하나님이 날 도와주시든지, 부처님이 날 도와주시든지, 알라가 도와주시든지, 정말 이 세상에 수많은 신들 가운데 어느 하나라도 나를 도와주면 좋으니까 많으면 많을수록 좋다고 생각하는 것이 우리 인생들의 보통의 마음입니다. 실제로 전 세계적으로 여러 종파들이 있는데요. 그런 종파들에 가보면 다른 우상들도 섬기면서 그 가운데 하나로 예수상을 만들어 놓고 “예수님도 섬긴다”고 합니다. 그래서 이런 능력도 받고 저런 능력도 받으려 하는 경향들이 많이 있습니다.
우리나라도 어쩌면 다신교 문화 가운데 있었고, 일본이나 중국 같은 데는 더 심한 다신교 사회라고 말할 수 있겠는데, 하나님께서는 우리로 하여금 그런 다신교 시스템 속에서 하나님도 섬기고 다른 신도 섬기는 것을 금하십니다. 사실 우리 구약 성경을 읽어보면 구약 시대 때 이스라엘 민족의 문제가 무엇이었냐면, 그들이 하나님을 버린 것이 문제가 아니었습니다. 이스라엘 민족은 항상 여호와 하나님을 섬겼어요. 단 한 번도 여호와 하나님을 떠나본 적이 없습니다. 그런데 이스라엘 민족의 문제가 무엇이었냐면 하나님을 섬기면서 동시에 바알 신도 섬기는 겁니다. 그 바알 신이 강력한 파워를 가지고 있는 것 같고 아세라 신이 강력한 파워를 가지고 있는 것 같으니까, 하나님을 예배하면서 유월절도 지키고 무교절도 지키고 하나님께서 원하시는 번제도 드리고 화목제도 드리는데, 그것만 하고 끝난 것이 아니라 바알 신에게 가서 제물을 드리고 축복받기를 원하고, 아세라 신에게 가서 또 그 신에게 축복받기를 원했던 것이 바로 이스라엘 민족의 문제였다고 말할 수가 있습니다.
사실 이렇게 사람들이 여러 신들을 두려고 하는 그 이유가 무엇이냐 하면, 신들도 각기 전문 분야가 있다고 생각하기 때문에 그렇습니다. 우리가 병이 들었을 때 증상에 따라서 전문의를 찾아가듯이 말입니다. 눈이 아프면 안과를 가고, 귀가 아프면 이비인후과를 가고, 배가 아프면 내과를 가는 것처럼, 우리 인생의 여러 문제들 가운데서 그 문제를 해결해 줄 수 있는 최적의 신을 찾아가서 예배하고 해결받고 싶어 하는 것이 인간의 자연스러운 심성이라 말할 수 있을 겁니다. 농사가 풍년이 되기를 원한다면 풍요의 신에게, 아기가 생기지 않으면 삼신할머니 같은 신에게, 질병에 걸리면 치유의 신에게, 장사가 잘되게 하기 위해서는 장사의 신에게 가서 경배를 하는 것이죠. 하나님께서는 그런 생각을 하는 우리들을 향해서 말씀하십니다. 절대로 다른 신을 섬기지 말고 누구만 섬겨라? 하나님만 섬겨라.
하나님께서 하나님만 섬기라고 말씀하시는 그 이유가 무엇인가? 그것은 이 세상에 하나님만 참된 신이고 다른 모든 신은 가짜 신이기 때문입니다. 이 세상에 신이라고 이름하는 그 모든 신들이 능력이 있어서 우리 문제를 해결해 줄 것이라고 이야기를 하지만, 전혀 해결해 줄 수 없는 가짜라는 사실을 우리가 분명하게 기억해야 합니다.
시편 135편 15절부터 18절의 말씀을 보면 이렇게 기록합니다. “열국의 우상은 은금이요 사람의 손으로 만든 것이라 입이 있어도 말하지 못하며 눈이 있어도 보지 못하며 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하며 그들의 입에는 아무 호흡도 없나니 그것을 만든 자와 그것을 의지하는 자가 다 그것과 같으리로다.” 그런데 안타깝게도 수많은 사람들이 우상에게로 갑니다. 대구 갓바위 같은 곳에 대학 입시를 앞두고 수많은 사람들이 와서 기도를 합니다. 왜 거기서 기도할까요? 입시에 효능이 있다는 소문 때문입니다. 움직이지도 못하고 말도 못 하고 듣지도 못하는 그 우상들 앞에서 섬기는 것이 너무나도 어리석은 것이라는 사실을 우리가 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
우리는 하나님께서 다른 신을 네게 두지 말라고 말씀하시는 것을 종종 오해할 때가 있습니다. 하나님은 마치 ‘조폭 두목’과 비슷하다고 오해를 하는 겁니다. 조폭 두목이 “너는 나만 오야붕으로 모셔야 한다, 배반하면 작살난다”고 협박하듯이 말입니다. 하나님께서도 하나님만을 섬기지 않으면 벌을 내리시고 박살 내시는 분처럼 느껴질 수도 있겠지만, 하나님께서 이 명령을 주시는 이유는 하나님이 조폭 두목이시기 때문이 아니라, 우리를 사랑하시는 아버지이시기 때문입니다. 믿습니까?
사랑하는 부모가 어린 자녀에게 “모르는 사람이 사탕 준다고 해도 절대 따라가지 마라”고 신신당부하는 이유가 무엇인가요? 아이가 유괴당할까 봐, 잘못된 길에 빠져 죽을까 봐 그러는 것입니다. 하나님께서 제1계명을 말씀하시는 이유는 우리를 정말 사랑하시기 때문입니다. 조폭 두목을 떠나서 파멸당하는 이유는 두목이 보복하기 때문이지만, 하나님의 품을 떠나 유괴범 같은 사탄을 따라가면 그 죄악의 구렁텅이 자체 때문에 문제가 생기는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 하나님을 떠나면 낭떠러지로 떨어지고 사탄에게 멸망당할 것을 아시기에 그리로 가지 말라고 경고하시는 것입니다. 이 사랑이 많으신 아버지의 음성을 제1계명에서 들으시길 바랍니다.
하나님께서 가짜 신을 두지 말라고 하시는 이유는 그 다른 신들이 우리를 멸망의 길로 인도하기 때문입니다. 여기서 ‘다른 신’은 단순히 타 종교만을 의미하지 않습니다. 하나님이 아닌 것을 하나님의 위치로 올려놓게 될 때 그것이 바로 우상이 되고 다른 신이 됩니다. 아담과 하와에게 선악과는 하나님 외에 다른 신이 되어버린 결과였습니다. “이것만 먹으면 하나님처럼 될 것이고 내 문제를 해결해 줄 것”이라 믿는 순간 그것이 우상이 된 것입니다.
사실 우리에게 좋은 모든 것이 우상이 될 가능성이 많습니다. 자녀가 우상이 될 수 있고, 돈이 우상이 될 수 있습니다. 명예와 권력과 자존심도 마찬가지입니다. 팀 켈러 목사님은 《내가 만든 신》이라는 책에서 심지어 기독교 사역에서의 성공조차 우상이 될 수 있다고 경고합니다. 바리새인들은 율법을 철저히 지키는 종교적 행위 자체를 자랑거리로 삼아 자기만족이라는 우상을 섬겼습니다. 오늘날 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 교회의 부흥을 갈망하는 이유가 하나님의 통치가 임하는 기쁨 때문이 아니라, “우리 교회가 이렇게 크고 멋지다”라고 자랑하고 싶은 마음 때문이라면 그것은 종교라는 탈을 쓴 우상 숭배가 될 수 있습니다.
하나님께서는 아브라함에게 “네 독자 이삭을 바치라”고 하심으로써 “네 하나님이 나냐, 네 아들이냐?”라고 물으셨습니다. 아브라함은 아들이 우상이 아니라 하나님만이 나의 하나님임을 고백하며 결단했습니다. 부자 청년 관원에게 “재산을 다 팔고 나를 따르라”고 하신 이유도 그의 하나님이 ‘돈’이었기 때문입니다. 오늘 우리에게 “자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라”고 하시는 주님의 말씀을 기억하시길 바랍니다.
가짜 신을 섬기면 행복할 것 같지만 결국 절망의 나락으로 빠집니다. 우상은 낚시꾼의 미끼와 같습니다. 보암직하고 먹음직한 화려한 약속으로 우리를 유혹하지만, 결국은 우리 인생을 빼앗아 가버립니다. 카지노의 유혹이나 미신의 유혹도 마찬가지입니다. 돈이라는 우상은 우리에게 달콤함을 약속하지만, 그것을 쫓다 보면 건강을 잃고 가족 관계가 틀어지며 결국 비참한 최후를 맞이하게 합니다.
하나님께서는 우리를 너무나도 사랑하시기에 “가짜 신에게 속지 말라”고 말씀하십니다. 하나님이 이기적이어서 우리를 묶어두려는 것이 아니라, 하나님 품 안에서만 우리가 참되게 행복할 수 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 우리를 향해 먼저 **“나는 너 외에 아무도 사랑하지 않는다”**라고 사랑 고백을 하셨습니다. 그 아들을 십자가에 내어주시기까지 우리를 사랑하신 그분께 나아가는 것이 유일한 행복의 길입니다.
매 순간 우리 마음을 되돌아봅시다. 하나님이 아닌 이 세상의 것들이 내 문제를 다 해결해 줄 것처럼 믿고 있지는 않습니까? “주님 밖에는 내가 의지할 자가 없습니다. 하나님만이 나의 사랑입니다”라고 고백하며 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 되기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
A Covenant of Loyalty: Why God Demands Our Total Devotion
This is the third session of our exposition on the Ten Commandments. Today, we will examine the very first commandment. The first commandment is: “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
If you happen to know a bit about Catholicism, or if you have ever visited a Catholic church, you might have noticed that the version of the Ten Commandments used by Catholics differs slightly from the one used in our Protestant tradition. In the Protestant version, the first commandment is to have no other gods, the second is not to make idols, and the third is not to take the Lord’s name in vain. However, in Catholicism, the first and second are combined into a single first commandment. Thus, “no other gods” and “no idols” constitute their first commandment; their second is not to take the Lord’s name in vain, their third is to keep the Sabbath holy, and their fourth is to “honor your parents.” You might wonder, “Does that mean they only have nine?” No—the Catholic tradition divides the tenth commandment into two: the ninth is “thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house,” and the tenth is “thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant,” and so on.
The reason for this difference in classification between Protestants and Catholics is that the text in Exodus 20 does not come with numbers attached. If it had been labeled “Number 1, Number 2, Number 3,” both traditions would use the same numbering. Since the numbers are absent, people have different ideas about where one commandment ends and the next begins, leading to different classification systems.
Because of this, some people who are aware of these facts criticize Catholicism, claiming, “Because Catholicism is an idol-worshipping religion, they removed the second commandment.” You may have heard such arguments—people who fiercely attack the Catholic Church, saying, “They pray before statues of the Virgin Mary and find the command against idols uncomfortable, so they deleted it, merged it into the first, and shifted everything up.”
However, I don’t believe such harsh criticism is necessary. While it is true that practices like praying before a statue of Mary are problematic, the fact of the matter is that the Catholic Church did not “delete” the commandment against making idols. If we check the facts, we see they simply grouped it under the first commandment rather than removing it. Therefore, there is no need to get worked up over this. Furthermore, this system isn’t unique to Catholics; even some Protestant denominations use the Catholic numbering system. Since both utilize the actual text of Exodus 20 as the Ten Commandments, attacking them so fiercely over mere classification is excessive.
Moving on, let’s look at the first commandment itself: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” What is the background of God saying this? Why is He speaking these words? It is because the environment the Israelites had lived in until now was a polytheistic one. Before receiving these commandments at Mount Sinai, where had the Israelites been? Egypt. Egypt was a nation that operated under a polytheistic system. There wasn’t just one idol; there were many. Having lived in an environment where they made and worshipped various idols depending on the occasion, the Israelites—now on their way to the land of Canaan—became God’s people through a covenant to worship Him alone. To these people, God is saying: “Do not worship many gods as you saw in the land of Egypt, but worship only the one true God.”
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could worship God while simultaneously worshipping Buddha or Allah? Many people think so. They feel that as long as someone answers, it’s fine. Whether it’s God, Buddha, or Allah, if any of the numerous gods in the world helps them, they think the more, the better. This is a common human mindset. Indeed, if you look at various sects globally, you’ll find places where they worship many idols and simply add a statue of Jesus among them, saying, “We worship Jesus, too.” They try to receive power from every available source.
Korea was also rooted in a polytheistic culture, and societies like Japan or China could be described as even more intensely polytheistic. Yet, God forbids us from being part of such a system where we worship Him alongside other gods. If you read the Old Testament, you’ll see that the problem with the Israelites wasn’t that they abandoned God. They always worshipped Jehovah God; they never truly left Him. Their problem was worshipping God and Baal at the same time. Because Baal and Asherah seemed to possess great power, the Israelites would worship God—observing the Passover and Unleavened Bread, offering burnt offerings and peace offerings—but they didn’t stop there. They would then go to Baal to offer sacrifices for a blessing and to Asherah for another.
The reason people seek to have multiple gods is that they believe gods have “specialties,” much like we seek medical specialists based on our symptoms. If your eyes hurt, you go to an ophthalmologist; if your ears hurt, an ENT; if your stomach hurts, an internist. Humans naturally want to find the “optimal god” for a specific problem. If they want a bountiful harvest, they go to a god of fertility; if they can’t conceive, they go to a deity like the “Samsin Grandmother”; if they are sick, a god of healing; if they want business to prosper, a god of commerce. To those of us who think this way, God says: Never worship other gods. Worship only whom? Worship only God.
Why does God insist that we worship only Him? It is because He is the only true God in this world, and all other gods are fake. Though all those named as “gods” claim to have the power to solve our problems, we must clearly remember that they are fakes who can solve nothing.
Psalm 135:15–18 records:
“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; eyes they have, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear; nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them.”
Yet, sadly, many people still turn to idols. Before college entrance exams, crowds gather at places like the Gatbawi Buddha in Daegu to pray. Why? Because of rumors that it is “effective” for admissions. We must remember how foolish it is to serve idols that cannot move, speak, or hear.
We often misunderstand why God tells us to have no other gods. We mistakenly view God as something like a “mob boss.” As if a gang leader is threatening us, saying, “You must only serve me as the boss; if you betray me, you’re dead.” It might feel as though God is someone who punishes and destroys us if we don’t worship Him alone, but the reason He gives this command is not that He is a mob boss, but because He is our loving Father. Do you believe this?
Why does a loving parent strictly tell a young child, “Never follow a stranger, even if they offer you candy”? It’s because the child might be kidnapped or fall into a path that leads to death. The reason God speaks the first commandment is that He truly loves us. If you leave a mob boss, you are destroyed because the boss retaliates; however, if you leave God’s embrace to follow a “kidnapper” like Satan, problems arise because of the pit of sin itself. God knows that if we leave Him, we will fall off a cliff and be destroyed by Satan, so He warns us not to go there. I hope you hear the voice of this loving Father in the first commandment.
The reason God tells us not to have fake gods is that those other gods lead us to the path of destruction. Here, “other gods” does not simply refer to other religions. Anything that is not God but is raised to the position of God becomes an idol and another god. For Adam and Eve, the forbidden fruit became another god besides the Lord. The moment they believed, “If I just eat this, I will be like God and my problems will be solved,” it became an idol.
In fact, almost anything good in our lives has the potential to become an idol. A child can become an idol; money can become an idol. Fame, power, and even pride are the same. In his book Counterfeit Gods, Pastor Timothy Keller warns that even success in Christian ministry can become an idol. The Pharisees served the idol of self-satisfaction, taking pride in the religious act of strictly keeping the Law itself. We are the same today. If the reason we long for church revival isn’t the joy of God’s reign, but a desire to boast, “Our church is so big and wonderful,” then it becomes idolatry wearing the mask of religion.
God asked Abraham, “Sacrifice your only son, Isaac,” thereby asking, “Is your God me, or is it your son?” Abraham decided that his son was not his idol and confessed that God alone was his God. The reason Jesus told the rich young ruler, “Sell all your possessions and follow me,” was that his god was “money.” I hope you remember the Lord’s words today: “Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me.”
Serving fake gods feels like it will bring happiness, but it ultimately leads to the depths of despair. Idols are like a fisherman’s bait. They tempt us with flashy promises that look good and taste good, but they eventually take our lives away. The temptations of casinos or superstitions are the same. The idol of money promises sweetness, but chasing it leads to lost health, broken family relationships, and a miserable end.
Because God loves us so much, He tells us, “Do not be deceived by fake gods.” It’s not that God is selfish and wants to tie us down; it’s because we can only be truly happy within His embrace. God first made a confession of love toward us, saying, “I love no one but you.” The only path to happiness is coming to the One who loved us so much that He gave His Son to the cross.
Let us reflect on our hearts every moment. Are you believing that worldly things—and not God—will solve all your problems? I pray in the name of the Lord that we all become those who triumph in faith, confessing, “Lord, I have no one to rely on but You. God alone is my love.”
