의인의 후손 (잠 20:7)
우리가 잠언서의 말씀을 매주 수요일마다 살펴보고 있는데요. 너무 오랫동안 해서 지겨운가요? 그런 대답하기 곤란한 질문을 하면 안 되는 건가요? 네, 그때그때마다 주시는 하나님의 은혜가 우리들 가운데 있을 수 있기를 바랍니다. 오늘은 잠언 20장 7절 말씀 한 절을 살펴보게 되었는데, 20장 7절에서 이렇게 표현하고 있습니다. “온전하게 행하는 자가 의인이라 그의 후손에게 복이 있느니라” 온전하게 행하는 자가 누구라? 의인이라. 누가 의인이에요? 온전하게 행하는 자가 의인이다 그렇게 말하고 있고, 그 의인의 후손에게는 무엇이 있다고요? 복이 있다 그렇게 표현하고 있습니다. 한마디로 말해서 의인의 후손들, 의인의 자손들은 복되도다라고 하는 그런 의미의 말씀인데요. 의인이 아닌 자, 악인의 후손의 경우에는 복되지 않을 것이라고 하는 그런 의미도 내포하고 있다고 해야 할 것입니다.
의인은 복된 것이고 의인의 후손들이 복된 것이지만, 의를 무시하고 악을 행하며 온갖 나쁜 짓을 하고 있는 그런 악한 자들과 그 악한 자들의 후손에게는 복이 없을 것이라고 하는 말씀 성경에서 가르치고 있는데요. 정말 그런가요? 어떻게 느끼십니까? 우리가 살고 있는 이 세상에서는 정말 그랬으면 좋겠는데, 안 그런 것처럼 느껴지는 경우를 우리가 종종 경험하게 된다고 하는 게 문제가 되겠습니다. 성경은 의인이 복되다고 말하고 있고 성경은 의인의 후손들이 복되다고 이야기하고 있는데, 우리가 마주하고 있는 현실에서는 어떤 모습을 보여주고 있는가… 정반대처럼 보이는 그런 현상들을 늘 경험하면서 살아가고 있다고 하는 게 문제인 것이죠.
특별히 우리가 종종 듣는 이야기가 무슨 이야기냐면, 예전에 독립운동을 하면서 정말 나라를 위해서 희생하고 헌신하며 그렇게 정말 사심이 없이 수고했던 독립군들의 후손들은 지금도 너무나도 힘들고 고통스럽게 살아가고 있고 비참한 상태에서 살아가고 있는 반면에, 친일을 하고 나라를 팔아먹고 또한 그 당시에 온갖 나쁜 짓을 했던 그런 사람들의 후손들은 그 선조들이 악을 행함으로써 얻었던 그 수많은 재산들을 물려받고 땅을 물려받고 하면서 지금 떵떵거리면서 아무런 걱정 근심 없이 살아가고 있다고 하는 그런 비극적인 대비를 종종 듣게 되는 것이죠. 도대체 어떻게 되는 것일까요? 성경은 가르치기를, 하나님의 말씀은 가르치기를 의인이 복되다고 말하고 있는데 왜 이 세상에서는 정반대로 현상이 나타나고 있는가 하는 게 오늘 우리들이 가지고 있는 고민이요 숙제라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 혹시 친일했던 게 의인이 아닐까요? 성경 말씀에 의하면… 왜 그런데 왜 이런 결과가 나타난 걸까요?
도무지 이해하려 해도 이해할 수가 없을 것 같습니다. 하지만 우리가 성경을 읽을 때는 성경 한두 구절 어느 한 부분에 있는 그 말씀만을 볼 것이 아니라, 성경 전체의 가르침을 통해서 우리가 하나님의 뜻을 깨달아야 한다고 말씀을 드렸는데요. 우리가 기억해야 될 것이 무엇입니까? 그것은 성경은 의인의 후손이 복되다고도 말하고 있지만, 그래서 복된 것처럼 보이는 사람이 누구냐 바로 의인의 후손이요, 온전하게 행한 자의 후손이요, 의롭고 거룩한 자가 형통하고 하나님과 함께하는 자가 형통할 것이라는 그런 말씀도 있지만, 그러나 동시에 성경에 또 정반대되는 것과 같은 그런 말씀들도 성경에 있다고 하는 것을 살펴보아야 할 것입니다. 성경에 보면 어떤 말씀들이 있습니까? 주를 위해서 하나님의 말씀대로 순종하며 사는 자는 이 세상에서 고난을 당하기도 하고 핍박을 당하기도 할 거라 말씀하고 있어요.
너희가 내 이름으로 인하여 고난을 당하고 너희가 내 이름 때문에 핍박을 받게 될 때가 있는데, 그런데 그것 때문에 슬퍼하지 말고 괴로워하지 말고 그런 자에게 복이 있다 말씀하여 주시고, 오히려 그것을 극복하며 정말 하나님께서 내가 의를 위해서 고난을 받는 것이 그게 영광이라고 생각하며 살아야 한다는 그런 말씀들이 성경에 동시에 있는 것이죠. 뿐만 아니라 누가복음 13장 4절과 5절 말씀에 보면 예수님께서 이런 말씀을 해 주셨습니다. “또 실로암에서 망대가 무너져 치어 죽은 열여덟 사람이 예루살렘에 거한 다른 모든 사람보다 죄가 더 있는 줄 아느냐 너희에게 이르노니 아니라 너희도 만일 회개하지 아니하면 다 이와 같이 망하리라” 말씀하고 계셔서 어떤 사람이 괜찮아 보이고 어떤 사람이 고난을 당하고 정말 어려움을 당하는 사람들이 있다고 한다면, 우리가 나타난 결과만을 가지고 함부로 사람들을 평가하지 말라고 주님께서 말씀해 주고 계시는 것이죠.
의인의 후손이 복되다고 했기 때문에 우리 생각에 복된 사람들을 보면, 잘되는 사람을 보고 형통하는 사람을 보고 성공하는 사람을 보면 “그 사람이 나라를 구했나, 저 사람이 의인이었나”라고 우리가 생각하게 되지만 예수님께서는 그렇게 생각할 게 아니라고 말씀해 주시는 거예요. 잘되는 것 같고 성공하는 것 같고 아무 문제 없이 지내는 것 같지만, 그러나 그것이 그 사람의 의로움을 나타내는 게 아니다. 그 사람도 회개하지 아니하면 정녕 결국에는 망하게 될 것이다. 지금 어떤 모습을 보이고 있는가, 지금 형통하고 있는가 성공하고 있는가 그런 모습이 이 사람이 과연 의인이었는가 의인의 후손이었는가를 나타내는 것이 결코 아니라고 예수님께서 말씀해 주신 말씀도 있는 겁니다. 그래서 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 볼 때는 항상 여러 가지 측면에서 살펴보고 이해해야 할 필요가 있다 하겠습니다. 특별히 오늘 우리는 잠언 20장 7절의 말씀에서 “의인의 후손이 복되다”라고 하는 이 말씀을 우리가 묵상해 보고 있는데요.
이 말씀이 하나님의 말씀이기 때문에 그래서 이 말씀이 진리일 것이라고 생각하는데, 그런데 왜 오늘날 우리들의 현실 가운데서는 그런 모습들이 잘 나타나지 않는 것 같은가 하는 그 질문에 대해서 몇 가지로 생각해 볼 수가 있겠습니다. 첫 번째 생각해야 될 것이 있다면 지금 우리가 보고 있는 것이 전부가 아니라고 하는 사실입니다. 믿습니까? 우리 옆 사람에게 한번 얘기합시다. “지금 보고 있는 게 전부가 아니다.” 네, 자기 자신을 향해서도 얘기를 해보세요. “지금 내가 보고 있는 게 전부가 아니다.” 지금 악인의 후손들이 잘되는 것처럼 보이는데 “악인의 후손들 잘되고 있구나” 그게 전부가 아니라는 거예요. 지금 보이는 모습이 전부가 아니라는 것이죠. 지금은 하나님의 수많은 시간 가운데서 단 일부분에 지나지 않는 단면만을 우리가 보고 있는 것이라 할 수가 있겠습니다.
그래서 지금은 악인이 형통하는 것처럼 보여요. 지금은 아무 문제가 없는 것처럼 보여요. 지금은 모든 것들이 다 엉망진창인 것처럼 보이지만 이게 전부가 아니라는 거예요. 그 예를 어디서 찾을 수가 있겠습니까? 에스더서를 보면 알 수가 있는 것이죠. 에스더서를 보면 하만이라고 하는 사람이 무소불위의 권력을 가지고 온갖 그 권력으로 자기가 하고 싶은 대로 마음대로 하면서 “저 모르드개를 죽여야 되겠다, 이스라엘 민족을 죽여야 되겠다”고 하면서 그 사람의 앞길을 막을 수 있는 사람이 단 한 사람도 없고 그 사람이 원하는 대로, 그 사람 기분 느끼는 대로 모든 일들이 척척 이루어지는 것을 볼 때 “저 악인의 행하는 모든 일들이 형통하고 있구나” 생각하기가 쉬웠을 겁니다. 하지만 그게 전부였습니까? 아니란 말이에요. 무엇이 일어나고 있습니까?
어마어마한 반전이 일어나는 거예요. 하나님께서 에스더를 사용하시고 하나님께서 왕의 마음을 움직이셔서 결국 그 하만으로 하여금 나락으로 떨어지게 만들고, 죽이려고 했던 자가 죽임을 당하게 되고 죽음을 당하려고 했던 자가 해방이 되어 구원을 얻게 되는 엄청난 반전의 역사가 마지막 때에 일어나게 되는 그 이야기를 우리가 에스더서에서 살펴보게 된다고 한다면, 아직 그러한 반전의 역사가 오기 전에 지금 우리가 보고 있는 이 현상이 끝이 아니라 마지막이 아니라 이게 전부가 아니라 무엇이에요? 잠시 일부분이다.
지금 전체가 아니라 우리는 임시적인 한 부분을 보고 있는 것이며, 이것이 전부가 아니라 하나님의 그 시간표 안에서 하나님께서 그 모든 잘못된 것들을 바로잡으시고, 억울하게 눈물을 흘리고 있는 의인들의 눈에서 눈물을 닦아주시고, 하나님께서 모든 것을 바로잡으실 그때가 언제인지는 모르지만 지금 우리 앞에서 벌어지고 있는 일들이 그게 전부가 아니라 결국에는 하나님의 심판대 앞에서 바로잡힐 것이라는 사실을 믿으며 인내하며 견딜 수 있는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 두 번째로 우리가 생각해야 될 것이 있다면 무엇이겠습니까? 그것은 우리가 의인이라고 생각한 사람이 과연 의인일까 하는 것입니다. 우리가 볼 때는 나보다 깨끗해 보여요. 다른 사람들보다 괜찮아 보여요. 그래서 저 사람은 정말 의인인 것 같다, 저 사람은 법 없이도 살 수 있는 것 같다, 저 사람은 참 착한 사람이다, 저 사람은 정말 복 받을 사람이라고 생각하고 그 사람은 괜찮은 사람이라고 생각하기가 쉽습니다.
하지만 우리들은 겉모습만 바라보지만 하나님은 무엇을 바라보십니까? 우리의 심령을 꿰뚫어 보시는 거죠. 우리의 심령을 꿰뚫어 보실 때 우리는 의로운 것처럼 행세했고 정말 헌신적이고 정말 의롭고 온전하게 완전하게 행한 것처럼 보이지만, 그러나 하나님 앞에 서게 되면 그 마음의 더러운 모습들이 다 드러나게 될 때 의인이 아니라 죄인이라고 하는 사실을 고백할 수밖에 없는 것이죠. 그래서 이 세상에 그 누구도 하나님을 향해서 따질 수 있는 사람은 단 한 사람도 없어요. “하나님, 완전하게 행하는 의인에게는 그 후손이 복되다고 했는데 왜 내 후손이 복되지 않습니까?” 항의할 수 있어요, 없어요? 없어요. 우리가 하나님 앞에 서게 되는 그 순간 우리의 죄악이 너무나도 커서 우리는 할 말을 어떻게 할 수가 없는 거예요.
그저 묵묵부답일 수밖에 없는 것이고, 나와 같은 죄인 불쌍히 여기셔서 구원해 주신 것만 해도 감사하고, 오히려 우리가 이 세상에서 당하는 고난과 아픔들이 사실은 너무나도 부당한 대우를 내가 받고 있는 것이 아니라 사실은 하나님의 솜방망이 처벌밖에 안 된다는 것…
그걸 기억해야 돼요. 오늘 우리가 살아가면서 당하는 아픔이 있습니다. 우리가 살아가면서 어려움을 겪을 때가 있습니다. 고난을 당할 때가 있습니다. 그럴 때 “내가 왜 이런 고난을 당해야 하느냐, 내가 왜 이렇게 억울한 일을 당해야 되느냐” 그렇게 생각하고 계셨다고 한다면 아직 뭘 모르는 거예요. 하나님 앞에서 교만한 거예요. 내 자신의 더러움은 보지 못하고 나의 알량한 잘못된 자존심을 내세우는 거예요. 만약 우리가 하나님 앞에 제대로 서게 됐다고 한다면 내가 하나님 앞에 설 수 없는 죄인이요…
내가 지금 당하고 있는 것이 억울한 게 아니라 솜방망이 처벌밖에 안 되는 것이고, 하나님께서 나를 지금 당장 심판하셔도 아무 할 말이 없고 그저 하나님의 그 처분하심에 아무 찍소리도 하지 못하고 겸손하게 엎드릴 수밖에 없는 죄인인데, 하나님께서는 우리를 사랑하사 우리에게 그저 교훈을 주시려고, 우리가 하나님께 돌아오라고 그저 약간의 솜방망이로 우리를 다루시고 계신다는 사실을 생각해 본다고 한다면, 하나님 앞에 따지고 항의하는 것이 아니라 고난당하는 것이 오히려 하나님의 은혜라 하나님의 사랑이라 하나님의 놀라운 축복이라 하는 사실을 고백해야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
뿐만 아니라 세 번째로 우리가 생각해 보아야 할 것이 있다면 복이 무엇인가라고 하는 점입니다. 의인의 후손은 복이 있다고 말씀해 주고 계시는데 복이 무엇이죠? 복되었다고, 복되다고 하는 말의 의미가 무엇일까요? 우리는 복 하면 오복을 생각합니다. 오복이 뭐죠? 다섯 개인데 장수를 복으로 생각하고 재물이 많은 걸 복으로 생각하고 건강한 걸 복으로 생각하고 또 뭐가 더 있는데요… 이가 좋아야 건강한 복이라고 하나요? 저는 복이 없습니다. 이가 다 망가져 버렸어요. 아무튼 우리가 생각하기에 복이 무엇인가… 건강한 게 복이 아닙니까? 복이 무엇인가 돈이 많은 게 그게 복 아닙니까? 장수하는 게 복이 아닙니까? 그렇게 생각하면서 우리가 그렇게 바라보고 있는 것이죠. 하지만 이것은 성경적인 관점이 결코 아닙니다. 이것은 세속적인 관점이고 지극히 물질주의적인 관점에서의 복일 뿐이지, 성경에서 말하고 있는 복이 무엇인가? 성경에서 말하는 복이 무엇이에요?
하나님과의 관계가 회복되는 거죠. 하나님이 우리의 아버지가 되시고 우리가 하나님의 자녀가 되어서 우리가 주 안에 있는 게 복이에요. 하나님 안에 있기 때문에 부수적으로 나타나는 현상들 가운데 평안함이 있을 수 있겠고, 하나님 안에 있기 때문에 부수적으로 나타나는 게 형통함일 수도 있을 것이고, 때로는 하나님 안에 있다고 하는 그 사실 때문에 만족함으로 나타날 수가 있겠고, 하나님 안에 있다고 하는 그 사실 때문에 때로는 물질적인 그런 풍성함도 있을 수 있겠고 어떤 세상 세속적인 성공도 따라올 수도 있고 많은 그런 부수적인 모습들이 나타날 수 있지만, 그러나 그 부수적인 것들이 복이 아니라 그 복의 본질이 무엇이냐 하면 하나님과 연관되어 있는 거예요. 하나님 안에 있는 게 복인 거예요. 하나님을 나의 하나님으로 모시고 하나님 안에 거주하는 게 복이라는 사실을 기억해야 되는 것이죠.
그래서 우리가 무엇인가 참된 복을 누려야 할 텐데, 그리고 그 복이 무엇인가 하나님 안에서 하나님과 함께 동행하고 지내는 것… 그렇기 때문에 그의 마음 가운데 평안함과 만족감이 있고 그로 인해서 모든 것들이 나타날 수 있다는 사실을 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 의인의 후손이 복이 있다는 말씀이 성경 여러 곳에서 다양한 방법으로 설명하고 있습니다. 특별히 시편 112편 말씀을 보면 1절에서부터 10절 말씀에 이르기까지 이렇게 표현합니다. “할렐루야 여호와를 경외하며 그의 계명을 크게 즐거워하는 자는 복이 있도다 그의 후손이 땅에서 강성함이여 정직한 자들의 후손에게 복이 있으리로다 부와 재물이 그의 집에 있음이여 그의 공의가 영구히 서 있으리로다 정직한 자들에게는 흑암 중에 빛이 일어나나니 그는 자비롭고 긍휼이 많으며 의로운 이로다 은혜를 베풀어 주며 꾸어 주는 자는 잘 되나니 그 일을 정의로 행하리로다 그는 영원히 흔들리지 아니함이여 의인은 영원히 기억되리로다 그는 흉한 소문을 두려워하지 아니하며 여호와를 의뢰하고 그의 마음을 굳게 정하였도다 그의 마음이 견고하여 두려워하지 아니할 것이라 그의 대적들이 받는 보응을 마침내 보리로다 그가 재물을 흩어 빈궁한 자들에게 주었으니 그의 의가 영구히 있고 그의 뿔이 영광 중에 들리리로다 악인은 이를 보고 한탄하여 이를 갈면서 소멸되리니 악인들의 욕망은 사라지리로다”
아멘. 뿐만 아니라 시편 37편 25절, 26절의 말씀에서도 이렇게 가르칩니다. “내가 어려서부터 늙기까지 의인이 버림을 당하거나 그의 자손이 걸식함을 보지 못하였도다 그는 종일토록 은혜를 베풀고 꾸어 주니 그의 자손이 복을 받는도다” 하나님의 그 복, 하나님을 나의 아버지로 삼고 하나님 안에 있는 자의 복이 어떻게 이 세상에서 드러나는가 다양한 방법으로 설명해 주고 있는데요. 복된 자는, 의로운 자는 어떤 축복을 얻는가?
출애굽기 20장 6절 말씀에서 의인에게는, “나를 사랑하고 내 계명을 지키는 자에게는 천 대까지 은혜를 베푸느니라” 가르쳐 주고 있는 것이죠. 그래서 오늘 우리가 기도해야 할 제목이 있다면, 단순히 이 세상의 성공을 위해서 기도하는 것보다도 이 세상의 어떤 물질적인 만족을 위해서 기도하는 것보다도, 우리가 먼저 기도해야 될 제목이 있다면 하나님과의 관계가 회복되고 그래서 하나님의 은혜 안에 머무는 자, 하나님의 뜻대로 순종하는 자가 되는 그런 은총을 달라고 기도하며 엎드려야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 단순히 이 세상의 성공 그런 것들만을 위해서 기도할 게 아니에요. 성경은 뭐라고 기록하고 있습니까? 우리가 정욕으로 구하면 응답하지 않는다고 말씀해 주셨어요. 어디서 그렇게 말씀하고 있습니까?
야고보서 4장 3절 말씀에 “구하여도 받지 못함은 정욕으로 쓰려고 잘못 구하기 때문이라” 말씀해 주셨는데, 우리가 재물이나 성공이나 형통함, 이와 같은 것들이 우리들의 우상이 되어서 그 우상을 얻고자 하는 마음으로 하나님 앞에 기도한다고 하면 하나님께서 응답을 하실까요? 안 해요. 왜 안 해요? 안 하는 이유가 그것이 우리의 우상이 되면 결국 우리가 망할 수밖에 없기 때문이에요. 그래서 우리의 기도의 제목이 단순하게 재물이 많아지는 것, 단순히 성공하는 것, 형통함이 우리의 기도의 제목이 될 것이 아니라 훨씬 더 그것보다도 더 중요한 것이 있다면, 하나님의 뜻대로 살고 하나님의 그 말씀 가운데 온전히 행하는 자가 되어서 복된 자가 되고 후손들이 복된 후손들이 될 수 있게 해달라고 기도하며 엎드리는 우리 모두가 되어야 될 줄로 믿습니다.
하나님의 뜻대로 살아가는 것을 더 사모해야 되는데, 그것이 손해가 아닌 것은 결국 그것이 복된 것이요 하나님께서 그런 하나님의 뜻에 따라 사는 자들을 귀히 여기시고 은혜로 함께해 주실 것이기 때문입니다. 우리가 넘어질 때마다 우리는 십자가 앞에 나가야 합니다. 온전하게 행하여야만 하는데, 그렇게 행하지 못할 때마다 주님 앞에 다시 한번 나가서 주의 십자가 앞에 엎드려 기도하고, 다시 회복시켜 주셔서 하나님과 동행하는 삶, 온전하게 행하는 삶 되게 하시고 그래서 나의 복됨뿐만 아니라 우리 자손들까지도 복될 수 있는 믿음의 영적인 가문들이 만들어질 수 있기 위해서 기도하며 엎드리는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.
The Legacy of Integrity: Why the Righteous Man’s Children are Blessed
We have been examining the words of Proverbs every Wednesday. Are you bored because we’ve been doing this for so long? Should I not ask such difficult questions? Well, I hope that the grace God provides in each moment stays with us. Today, we look at a single verse, Proverbs 20:7 (ESV): “The righteous who walks in his integrity—blessed are his children after him!” Who is the righteous man? He is the one who walks in his integrity. And what does it say about the descendants of the righteous? It says they are blessed. In short, it means the descendants and children of the righteous are blessed. Conversely, this also implies that the descendants of those who are not righteous—the wicked—will not be blessed.
The Bible teaches that the righteous and their children are blessed, while there is no blessing for the wicked who ignore righteousness and commit all sorts of evil, nor for their descendants. But is that really the case? How do you feel about this? We wish it were so in the world we live in, but the problem is that we often experience cases where it feels like the opposite is true. While the Bible says the righteous and their descendants are blessed, the reality we face often shows phenomena that seem exactly the opposite.
Specifically, a story we often hear is about the descendants of independent fighters. Those who sacrificed and dedicated themselves to the country with no selfish motive are often living in hardship and misery today. On the other hand, the descendants of those who were pro-Japanese, sold out the country, and committed all sorts of bad deeds at that time often inherited the vast wealth and land obtained through their ancestors’ evil and are now living prosperously without any worries. We frequently hear of this tragic contrast. How can this be? The Word of God teaches that the righteous are blessed, so why does the opposite phenomenon appear in this world? This is a struggle and a “homework” assignment for us today. Could it be that being pro-Japanese was actually “righteous” according to the Bible? Why do these results appear?
No matter how we try, it seems impossible to understand. However, I have told you that when we read the Bible, we should not look at just one or two verses in isolation but understand God’s will through the teachings of the entire Bible. What must we remember? While the Bible says the descendants of the righteous are blessed—leading us to expect that those who walk in integrity and holiness will prosper—the Bible also contains words that seem to say the exact opposite. What kind of words are those? It says that those who live in obedience to God’s Word for the sake of the Lord will also suffer hardship and persecution in this world.
It tells us that there are times when you will suffer and be persecuted because of His name; but He tells us not to be sad or distressed, saying that such people are blessed. In fact, it says we should consider it a glory to suffer for the sake of righteousness. Furthermore, in Luke 13:4–5 (ESV), Jesus said: “Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Here, the Lord tells us not to recklessly judge people based only on visible results—whether someone looks fine or someone else is suffering through great hardship.
Because the Bible says the descendants of the righteous are blessed, when we see people who seem blessed, prosperous, and successful, we think, “Did that person save the country? Was that person righteous?” But Jesus tells us not to think that way. Someone might seem to be doing well and living without problems, but that does not necessarily represent their righteousness. If they do not repent, they will eventually perish. Jesus made it clear that whether someone is currently prospering or successful is not a definitive indicator of whether they were righteous or a descendant of the righteous. Therefore, when we look at God’s Word, we need to understand it from various perspectives. Specifically, today we are meditating on the phrase “blessed are his children after him” in Proverbs 20:7.
Since this is God’s Word, we believe it is the truth. But why does it seem not to appear in our current reality? We can think about this in a few ways. First, we must realize that what we see now is not everything. Do you believe this? Let’s say to the person next to us, “What you see now is not everything.” Yes, say it to yourself as well: “What I see now is not everything.” It might look like the descendants of the wicked are doing well, but that is not the whole picture. What we are seeing is just a single cross-section, a tiny fraction of God’s vast timeline.
So, for now, it may look like the wicked are prospering. For now, it seems like there are no problems. For now, everything seems a mess, but this is not everything. Where can we find an example of this? We can see it in the Book of Esther. Haman had absolute power and did whatever he wanted, deciding to kill Mordecai and the entire Jewish people. There was no one who could stand in his way, and everything seemed to go exactly as he felt and desired. It would have been easy to think, “Everything this wicked man does is prospering.” But was that everything? No. What happened?
A tremendous reversal occurred. God used Esther and moved the heart of the king, eventually causing Haman to fall into the abyss. The one who intended to kill was killed, and those who were supposed to die were liberated and saved. If we look at the Book of Esther and see how a great history of reversal occurs at the end, then before such a reversal comes, we must realize that the phenomenon we see now is not the end; it is not everything. What is it? It is just a temporary moment.
We are not seeing the whole; we are seeing a temporary part. This is not everything. Within God’s timetable, He will set all wrongs right. We do not know when the time will come for Him to wipe away the tears of the righteous who are weeping in grievance, but we must believe that the things happening before us are not the end and that everything will eventually be set right before God’s judgment seat. We must be those who can endure and persist in this faith. Second, what should we think about? We must ask if the person we consider “righteous” is truly righteous. From our perspective, someone might look cleaner than us or better than others. It’s easy to think, “That person is truly righteous; they could live without laws; they are a good person who surely deserves a blessing.”
But while we only look at the outward appearance, what does God look at? He pierces through to our spirit. When He looks through our spirit, even if we acted righteous and appeared devoted and perfect, when we stand before God and our inner filth is revealed, we have no choice but to confess that we are not righteous, but sinners. Therefore, there is not a single person in this world who can argue against God. Can we protest, “God, You said the descendants of those who walk in integrity are blessed, so why are my children not blessed?” No, we cannot. The moment we stand before God, our sins are so great that we are left speechless.
We can only remain silent, being grateful that He saved a sinner like me. In fact, we must realize that the suffering and pain we face in this world are not “unfair treatment,” but are actually nothing more than a “slap on the wrist” from God.
We must remember that. There is pain we face as we live. There are times we experience difficulties and hardships. If, in those moments, you think, “Why do I have to suffer like this? Why do I have to go through something so unfair?” then you don’t know the truth yet. That is pride before God. It is failing to see your own filth and putting forward a meager, false sense of pride. If we truly stood before God, we would see that we are sinners who cannot stand in His presence.
What we are facing now is not “unfair”; it is a very light punishment. We are sinners who would have nothing to say even if God judged us right this moment. We are those who should just bow humbly without a word of complaint. When we consider that God is dealing with us with a “cotton-bat” punishment just to teach us a lesson and bring us back to Him, then rather than arguing or protesting, we should confess that suffering is actually God’s grace, His love, and His marvelous blessing.
Third, we must consider: what is a “blessing”? It says the descendants of the righteous are blessed, but what is a blessing? What is the meaning of being “blessed”? When we think of blessings, we often think of the “Five Blessings” (O-bok). What are they? There are five, including longevity, wealth, health… is having good teeth one of them? Then I have no blessing, as my teeth are all ruined. Anyway, in our minds, isn’t being healthy a blessing? Isn’t having a lot of money a blessing? Isn’t living a long life a blessing? That is how we view it. But that is by no means a biblical perspective. That is a secular and purely materialistic view of blessing. What is the blessing the Bible speaks of?
It is the restoration of our relationship with God. It is a blessing that God becomes our Father, we become His children, and we are “in the Lord.” Because we are in God, peace may appear as a secondary phenomenon. Because we are in God, prosperity might appear as a byproduct. Sometimes it manifests as contentment because of the fact that we are in God. Because of that fact, there can be material abundance or worldly success, and many secondary appearances may follow. However, those secondary things are not the blessing itself; the essence of that blessing is being connected to God. Being “in God” is the blessing. We must remember that having God as my God and dwelling in Him is the blessing.
Therefore, we must enjoy true blessing, and that blessing is walking and dwelling with God. Because of that, there is peace and satisfaction in the heart, and we must remember that everything else can follow from that. The Bible explains in various ways across many passages that the descendants of the righteous are blessed. Specifically, Psalm 112:1–10 (ESV) expresses it like this:
“Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in his commandments! His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries. He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor. The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish!”
Amen. Furthermore, Psalm 37:25–26 (ESV) teaches: “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread. He is ever lending generously, and his children become a blessing.” The Bible explains in various ways how that blessing of God—the blessing of having God as Father and being in Him—is manifested in this world.
In Exodus 20:6 (ESV), it teaches regarding the righteous: “but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.” Therefore, if there is a topic we should pray for today, rather than simply praying for worldly success or materialistic satisfaction, we must first pray for the grace to have our relationship with God restored, to be those who dwell in His grace, and to be those who obey His will. We shouldn’t just pray for worldly success. What does the Bible record? It says if we ask with wrong motives, He does not answer. Where does it say that?
James 4:3 (ESV) says: “You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” If wealth, success, or prosperity becomes our idol, and we pray to God with a heart to obtain that idol, will God answer? No. Why not? Because if that becomes our idol, we will eventually perish. Therefore, our prayer topic should not be simply gaining wealth, success, or prosperity. If there is something much more important than those, it is to pray that we become people who live according to God’s will and walk perfectly in His Word, becoming blessed individuals whose descendants are also blessed.
We should long more for living according to God’s will. That is not a loss, because ultimately that is what is blessed, and God treasures those who live according to His will and stays with them in grace. Every time we fall, we must go before the cross. We must walk in integrity, but every time we fail to do so, we must go before the Lord once more, kneeling and praying before His cross. We should pray that He restores us to a life of walking with God and walking in integrity, so that not only we are blessed, but our descendants can become part of a spiritual family of faith. I pray this in the name of the Lord.
