믿는 자들이 받을 성령 (요 7:37-39)

여러분 여행 좋아하시나요? 여러분이 가장 여행하고 싶으신 곳은 어디십니까? 나름대로 각자 다 버킷 리스트가 하나씩 다 있으시죠? 저는 지금까지 유럽을 한 두 번 정도 가봤는데, 그래도 못 가본 데가 있는데 하필이면 그 못 가본 데가 가장 중요한 데예요. 거기가 어디냐? 남유럽 이탈리아, 그리스, 터키 그리고 서아시아 이 팔레스타인, 이스라엘, 요르단 이 지역까지 연결해서요. 제가 명색이 성서학을 공부하는 사람 아닙니까? 가장 가보고 싶고 확인하고 싶고 체험하고 싶은 것이 많은데 아직 못 갔어요. 막상 가려고 탁 마음을 먹으면 문제가 좀 몇 가지 있습니다. 그중에 딱 떠오르는 문제가 뭐냐, 이게 사막 기후라는 거죠. 제가 제일 힘들어하는 게 더운 거거든요. 더위, 그다음에 갈증이에요. 목마름, 목마른 거 너무 힘들어요. 그 미국 LA 지역의 날씨가 이 지중해 지역의 날씨랑 비슷합니다. LA 지역에서 사역하시던 선배 목사님 한 분이 제가 1년에 딱 두 번 성례식 할 때만 끼는 그 하얀 장갑 있죠?

하얀 장갑을 맨날 끼고 다니시는 거예요. “아니 목사님, 그거 왜 그렇게 장갑을 맨날 끼고 다니세요?” 그랬더니 장갑을 이렇게 벗어서 보여주시는데 손바닥이 쩍쩍 갈라져 있어요. “어, 목사님 손바닥이 왜 그래요?” 그랬더니 “아, 이게 나성에서 살면서…” 여러분 나성이 뭔지 아시죠? “나성에 가면 편지를 띄우세요~” LA, 미국 캘리포니아 지역이 지중해성 기후거든요. 거기가 원래는 사막이에요. 그 사막에서 오래 살다 보니까 이 손바닥이 쩍쩍 갈라지고 막 너무너무 피부가 안 좋다는 거예요. 예. 그런데 여러분 LA만 그런 게 아니고, 우리 이스라엘 지중해 연안의 성지… 우리가 소위 성지를 여행할 때 그 똑같은 일들이 벌어진답니다. 그래서 중요한 게 뭐냐 하면 루틴이 하나 있는데 물을 자주 마셔야 된다는 거예요. 얼마나 물을 자주 마셔야 되냐, 최소한 1시간에 두 컵. 여러분 1시간에 두 컵 마실 수 있으세요? 저는 큰일 나요. 그렇게 마시면… 근데 안 마실 수가 없는 게 안 마시면 탈수, 탈수… 너무 건조하니까요.

탈수 증세가 보일 수 있다는 거죠. 그러면 어떤 분이 그래요? “아, 그냥 차만 타고 돌아다니면 안 돼요?” 근데요 여러분 거기 가보세요. 차만 타고 돌아다닐 수 있나. 우리 부산이야 뭐 도로가 잘 돼 있으니까 차 타고도 잘 볼 수 있지만, 여러분 모세가 십계명 받은 시내산 꼭대기에 차 타고 올라갈 수 있어요? 저희 장모님은 거기 올라가시다가 낙타 타고 올라가시다가 낙타에서 떨어지셨어요. 예. 다른 방법이 없대요. 사해의 동굴, 사해 사본—구약 성경의 사본이 발견된 쿰란 동굴 그 안에 들어가 봐야 될 거 아니에요. 페트라, 거대한 바위 그 바위 위에 그대로 만들어진 고대의 궁전, 페트라 요새… 요르단에 있는데 그런데 우리가 가려면 한참을 걸어야 된대요. 그러니까 여러분 중요한 게 뭐라고요? 물을 마시는 거, 이 루틴. 여러분 야구 선수들도 루틴이 중요해요. 배트 들고 딱 자리에 들어서면 그냥 치는 게 아니에요. 모자 한번 만지고 뭐 배트 한번 휘두르고 허리 한번 이렇게 하고 막…

그렇죠. 가만히 보세요. 이 야구 잘하는 선수일수록 그 루틴이 일정해요. 똑같은 반복되는 루틴이 있어요. 이 지중해 지역에 가면 그래야 된다는 거예요. 루틴으로 물을 한 시간마다 몇 컵씩? 두 컵씩 마셔야 된다는 거예요. 여러분 날씨, 날씨 생각해 보려고 이 장황한 얘기를 나눴습니다. 이런 기후에서 생각해 보면 성경의 이야기들이 아주 새롭게 다가오죠. 성경의 이야기들은 대부분 이런 사막 기후를 배경으로 쓰여진 이야기들입니다. 그러니까 그곳에서 물이라는 것 곧 뭐예요? 생명이에요. 따라 해 봅시다. “물은 생명이다.” 예. 물이 생명이에요. 생명 그 자체라는 겁니다. 그러니까 성경에 생수에 대한 이야기가 곳곳에서 나오는데, 이 생수는 그냥 우리나라 말로 깨끗한 물, 살아 있는 물 정도가 아니라 살아 있는 물이 아니라 물이 삶이고 물이 생명이라는 거죠. 그래서 예수님은 이 생수를 우리들의 생명과 연결해서 말씀하고 계십니다.

오늘 본문에서 예수님은 누구든지 목마른 사람은 그에게 나와서 마시라고 외치셨습니다. 자, 이 말씀 예수님이 하신 말씀이요, 사실은 예수님의 창작품이 아니고 대부분은 구약 성경으로부터, 선지자들이 하신 말씀으로부터 예수님께서 인용해서 하신 말씀이 많아요. 이 말씀은 누가 했던 말씀인 줄 아세요? 이사야, 이사야… 예, 이씨 성을 가진 사야라는 선지자가… 이사야 55장에 나오는 말씀입니다. 같이 한번 읽어볼까요? “오호라 너희 모든 목마른 자들아 물로 나아오라 돈 없는 자도 오라 너희는 와서 사 먹되 돈 없이 값없이 와서 포도주와 젖을 사라” 그러니까 이 말씀은요, 대가 없이 값없이 우리를 그 은혜로 부르시는 초대의 말씀입니다. 자, 요한은 이 말씀이 예수님이 이 이사야 선지자의 말씀을 인용하신 것이 명절 끝날, 특별히 초막절이라고 하는 절기 끝날에 성전에서 외치신 말씀이라고 설명하고 있어요. 이스라엘 사람들에게는요, 명절 가운데 절기가 며칠 동안 있으면 그중에 언제가 제일 큰 날이에요?

마지막 날 끝날이 큰 날이에요. 그 마지막 큰 날 성전에 가서 외치신 말씀. 유대인들의 전승에 따르면요, 초막절 축하 예식 가운데서 이 마지막 날에 제사장이 하는 일이 뭐냐, 제단 주위에다가 물과 포도주를 붓는 그 순서가 있었다는 거죠. 그러니까 이 초막절 절기의 마지막 날 예수님께서 성전에 나아가셔서 물을 말씀하셨다는 건 자신이 제사장으로서 이 역할을 하고 계시는 거예요. 그때 제사장이 기원하는 내용은 일반적으로는 “비를 주세요. 가뭄을 그치게 해 주세요”라는 기도이거나, 또는 마지막 날에 죽은 자들의 부활, 의인의 부활에 대하여 구하는 기도가 드려졌었다는 겁니다. 그러니까요 여러분 이 두 가지 의미가 다 중요합니다. 여기서 예수님께서 “누구든지 목마르거든 내게로 와서 마시라”고 말씀하셨다는 것은, 그 물 즉 생명, 부활의 소망을 담은 그 생명이 바로 자신으로부터 말미암는다는 사실을 우리에게 선포하셨다는 것은 너무 당연한 연결이죠. 목마른 자는 누구든지 내게로 와서 내가 주는 물을 마셔라.

이 말씀은요, 주님께서 그들에게 생명을 주시는 분이라고 하는 사실을 선포하고 계시는 겁니다. 주님이 주시는 그 생명을 받아 마시라는 말입니다. 그 물을 마시는 사람은 주님의 생명을 그가 얻게 될 뿐만 아니라 그다음 더 중요한 말씀이 나와요. 자, 여기가 어디예요? 여기가 어디예요? 제가 너무 날씬해서 잘 안 보이세요? 예, 여기 배에서, 배에서… 그 배에서 생수의 강이 흘러나오게 될 것이라고 말씀하셨어요. 그러면서 요한은 이 말씀에 설명을 붙이기를 뭐라고 했느냐, 괄호 쳐놓고—성경에 괄호가 많이 안 나오는데 여기 괄호 쳐놓고 설명하고 있어요. 그렇죠, 이 생수는 그를 믿는 자들이 받을 누구라고요? 성령, 성령… 성령을 가리켜 말씀하신 것이라고 우리에게 친절하게 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. 자, 주님은 지금 우리에게 뭘 주신다고요? 생명을 주신다고 말씀하시는데, 그 생명을 요한은 뭐라고 말하고 있어요?

성령이라고… 생명을 주시는 주님이 우리에게 생명을 주신다고 말씀하시는데 요한은 그것을 우리가 받을 성령이라고 설명하고, 그 성령은 우리가 예수님께로부터 받는 것일 뿐만 아니라 또한 우리의 배에서… 어디서요? 배. 부끄러우세요? 괜찮아요, 괜찮아요. 뭐 여러분 저보다 날씬하시잖아요. 우리의 배에서 솟아나와서 생수의 강물처럼 흘러넘치게 되는 그러한 성령이라고 말씀하고 계십니다. 자, 여러분 이 말씀이 그림으로 잘 안 그려지시면 제가 좀 도와드릴게요. 사막에 강이 있습니다. 사막에 무슨 강이 있느냐고요? 여러분 사막에는요, 와디(Wadi)라고 하는 강이 있어요. 어떤 강이 있다고요? 와디, 와디… 요 지금 보시는 사진은요, 건기와 우기의 중간쯤 되는 것 같아요. 여러분 우리 부산에 있는 낙동강은 1년 내내 물이 넘치잖아요. 그렇죠? 얼마나 물이 풍부하고 얼마나 감사해요. 그러니까 낙동강 주위의 땅은 다 푸르러요. 낙동강 주위에서 파도, 대파도 키우고 부추도 키우고… 우리 부산 사람 정구지라 그러죠.

낙동강 주위에서 얼마나 농산물이 얼마나 많이 나오는지 몰라요. 그런데 여러분 사막의 강은 그렇지 않습니다. 이 와디는요 우기에는 이렇게 강물이 있다가 건기가 되면 바싹 말라요. 말라서 쩍쩍 갈라지는 것 보이시죠? 요 남아 있는 물이 마저 싹 말라버리면요, 바짝 말라서 갈라지고 먼지 풀풀 나고… “아니 강이 어디 있어, 강이? 강은 무슨 강이야, 이게 무슨 강이야?” 합니다. 그런데 건기가 지나고 우기가 시작되고 비가 내리고 그 비가 저 산 꼭대기에서부터 흐르고 흐르고 흘러 그 물이 흘러 계곡을 덮치게 되면요, 저 와디 계곡에 물이 가득 차게 됩니다. 언제 여기가 그렇게 빼싹 말랐던가 싶게 말라붙었던 강줄기에 물이 흘러넘치고, 온 새와 사방에 생명의 물을 흘려보내게 되는 겁니다. 자, 그러니까요 주님이 우리에게 주신다고 하신 그 생명의 물은 바로 성령을 말씀하시는 것이라 그랬습니다.

우리 안에서 역사하시는 성령이 처음에는 찔끔찔끔찔끔찔끔 조금씩 조금씩 우리의 내면에서 흘러나오는 것 같은데, 그 성령이 우리에게 생명이신 성령이, 그 생명의 성령이 우리 안에만 계신 것이 아니라 우리로부터 흘러넘쳐 우리의 삶을 적시고 그것이 큰 강처럼 흐르고 차고 넘치는 역사가 있게 되는 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다. 이 생명이 역사하는 것을 요한일서 5장에는 이렇게 말합니다. “아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있고 하나님의 아들이 없는 자에게는 생명이 없느니라” 하나님의 아들이신 예수 그리스도가 우리 안에 계시면 우리에게 이 생명이 새롭게 역사하고, 이 생명은 우리 안에 거하시는 성령 하나님이 되셔서 성령 하나님께서 우리 안에만 머물러 계시는 것이 아니고 우리로부터 흘러나와 넘쳐 흘러 마른 땅을 적시는 사막의 강처럼 흘러 메마른 땅, 메마른 세상을 적시고 변화시키게 된다는 겁니다.

그 생명의 역사가 우리 안에서뿐만 아니라 온 세상 가운데 역사하게 되는 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다. 그러므로 요한복음 6장 63절에 보면 “살리는 것은 영이니” 그랬어요. 영이 우리를 살리는 겁니다. 하나님의 영이 우리를 살리는 생명이시고 그 생명이 우리 안에서 역사하여 그 성령이 우리로부터 흘러넘치는 놀라운 은혜의 역사가 일어나게 되는 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다. 그 성령이, 그 생수가 어디서 흘러나온다고요? 우리의 배에서. 오늘부터 배가 좀 용량이 작으신 분은 적어도 저 정도 사이즈로 한번 키워보시는 것도 생각해 보십시오. 주님이 이 말씀을 선포하시면서 “성경에 이름과 같이”라고 말씀하셨어요. 그러니까 앞에 “누구든지 목마르거든 내게로 와서 마셔라” 하셨던 말씀이 이사야 선지자의 말씀을 인용하셨던 것처럼, 이 말씀을… “그 배에서 생수의 강물이 흘러넘치리라” 하시는 이 말씀도 사실은 예수님이 선지자의 말씀을 인용하신 거예요.

구약 성경의 이미지를 우리에게 보여주시는 거예요. 어디에 나오는 내용일까요? 한번 맞춰보십시오. 여러분 예수님의 이 말씀, 우리의 배에서 생수의 강물이 흘러넘치는 이 모습은 도대체 어디에 나오는 모습일까? 여러분 주보 한번 들어보세요. 우리 교회 주보 맨 뒷면에 딱 돌리면 맨 아래에 뭐가 나옵니까? 새벽기도의 본문이 나오죠. 여기다가 옆에다가 쓰세요. ‘공동체 성경 읽기’. 새벽기도에 나오는 분들만 읽는 것이 아니라 우리 성동교회 모든 공동체가 매일매일 읽고 묵상할 생명의 양식입니다. 그런데 요즘 어디 읽고 있어요? 요즘 어디 읽고 있어요? 에스겔, 예. 에스겔서 읽고 있습니다. 그런데요 여러분, “그 배에서 생수의 강물이 흘러넘치리라” 하신 예수님의 이 말씀, 이 모습이 바로 에스겔서에 나오는 모습입니다. 궁금하신 분은 오늘부터 에스겔서 묵상을 시작해 보세요.

에스겔서 47장에 보면 이런 내용이 나옵니다. 저하고 같이 하나하나 좀 읽어보시죠. 읽어보시면서 그 그림을 여러분의 머릿속에 한번 그려보세요. “그가 나를 데리고 성전 문에 이르시니” 하나님의 천사가 선지자 에스겔—바벨론 땅에서 망한 유다 백성으로 바벨론의 포로로 끌려가 있는 에스겔 선지자를 데리고 환상 중에 이미 황폐하게 된 예루살렘 성전의 문 앞에 데려가셨어요. 그리고 보여주시는 장면이에요. “성전의 앞면이 동쪽을 향하였는데 그 문지방 밑에서 물이 나와 동쪽으로 흐르다가 성전 오른쪽 제단 남쪽으로 흘러내리더라 그가 또 나를 데리고 북문으로 나가서 바깥 길로 꺾여 동쪽을 향한 바깥 문에 이르시기로 본즉 물이 그 오른쪽에서 스며 나오더라”

“그 사람이 손에 줄을 잡고 동쪽으로 나아가며 천 척을 측량한 후에 내게 그 물을 건너게 하시니 물이 발목에 오르고 다시 천 척을 측량하고 내게 물을 건너게 하시니 물이 무릎에” 어디까지요? 무릎까지 올라왔어요. 물이 막 늘어나는 거예요. “다시 천 척을 측량하고 내게 물을 건너게 하시니 물이 허리에 오르고 다시 천 척을 측량하시니 물이 내가 건너지 못할 강이 된지라 그 물이 가득하여 헤엄칠 만한 물이요 사람이 능히 건너지 못할 강이더라 그가 내게 이르시되 인자야 네가 이것을 보았느냐 하시고 나를 인도하여 강가로 돌아가게 하시기로 내가 돌아가니 강 좌우편에 나무가 심히 많더라 그가 내게 이르시되 이 물이 동쪽으로 향하여 흘러 아라바로” 아라바는 바다입니다. “내려가서 바다에 이르리니 이 흘러내리는 물로 그 바다의 물이 되살아나리라” 여러분, 성전 문지방에서 흘러나오기 시작한 그 물이… 여러분 성전은 어디 있어요? 예루살렘 시온산 꼭대기에 있어요.

시온산 꼭대기에서 흘러내린 그 물이 산 아래로 흘러 메마른 계곡을 적시고 마른 땅 사막을 적시고 강이 되어서 큰 강물로 흐를 정도가 아니라 이제는 바다로 들어가 썩은 물에 섞이는 것이 아니라, 여러분 우리 동천 아무리 맑은 물을 흘러내려도 계속 썩은 물이 고이는데, 여러분 이 강물은 썩은 물에 섞여도 썩은 물이 되는 것이 아니라 오히려 바다가 살아나게 하는 생명의 강물이 흘러나오는 이 광경을 여러분 보시기 바랍니다. 이 비전이 결국은 어떤 결론을 우리에게 보여주느냐? 12절에 보십시오. “강 좌우 가에는 각종 먹을 과실나무가 자라서” 땅을 살아나게 하는 거죠. 생명이 살아나게 하는 겁니다. “그 잎이 시들지 아니하며 열매가 끊이지 아니하고 날마다 새 열매를 맺으리니 그 물이 성소를 통하여 나옴이라 그 열매는 먹을 만하고 그 잎사귀는 약 재료가 되리라” 여러분 이 장면 어디서 본 것 같지 않으세요?

강가에, 좌우 강가에 과실나무, 생명의 과실나무가 자라고 그곳에 열매가 맺히고, 그 열매가 우리를, 우리의 주린 자들의 배를 채우고 그 이파리는 약 재료가 되어서 세상에 아픈 자들을 치료하는, 세상을 치료하는 역사가 일어납니다. 이거 어디서 본 장면 같지 않으세요? 어디서 보셨어요? 성경 맨 끝에 요한계시록에 새 하늘과 새 땅이 이루어진 그곳에 그 생명나무, 그 생명의 강가에 그곳에 세워질 생명나무를 통해서 바로 이와 같은 역사가 이루어지는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 요한이 에스겔 선지자가 바라보았던 이 환상을 그가 하나님의 계시를 통해서 분명하게 보여주고 있는 겁니다. 에스겔 선지자는 요한이 우리에게 보여주는 새 하늘과 새 땅, 새 예루살렘의 환상을 이미 이때부터 우리에게 보여주는 겁니다. 이때가 언제예요? 바벨론 포로기라니까요. 이스라엘과 유다가 완전히 패망하고 왕과 백성들이 포로로 끌려갔던, 성전이 돌 하나 위에 돌 하나도 남지 않도록 황폐화되었던 그런 시기였습니다.

그곳에서 주님께서 “너희를 회복하리라. 이 성전을 회복하리라.” 회복할 뿐만 아니라 그곳에서 흘러넘치는 그 생명의 물을 통하여 온 세상이 살아나는 놀라운 역사, 그 비전을 보여주신 거죠. 이 환상 가운데 여러분 우리는 이 생명의 물로 가득하게 되는 이 마른 땅이 변화되는 세상의 모습을 어쩌면 잘 그리지 못합니다. 우리는 그냥 늘 푸르고 늘 물이 넘치고 그런 곳에서 사니까요. 이게 얼마나 감격스러운 모습인지 실감을 못 해요. 간절함이 없어요. 근데 여러분이 그 사막 한복판에 살고 있다고 생각해 보십시오. 그 바짝 말라 쩍쩍 갈라진 땅, 정말 그 위에 걷기만 해도 발바닥이 쩍쩍 갈라지고 피가 나고 혓바닥이 달라붙어서 타는 목마름으로 모든 생명이 죽어가는 그 땅 위에 서 있다고 생각해 보십시오. 그곳에 물이 흐릅니다. 그곳에 강이 넘쳐 흐릅니다. 그 강물이, 그 생명의 물이 흘러 죽어가는 어둠의 바다를 살립니다.

여러분 고대인들에게 바다는 두려움과 혼돈과 죽음의 상징이었어요. 그 바다가 살아납니다. 그 어둠의 세력을 이겨냅니다. 생명이 살아나고 고기가 살아나고… 여러분 그 물이 어디서부터 나왔다고요? 그 물이 성소에서 나왔다 그랬습니다. 성소가 어디입니까? 오늘 말씀은 이것이 핵심입니다. 성소가 어디입니까? 예루살렘에 지어진 돌로 지은 그 집입니까? 그래서 예루살렘을 이민족들로부터 빼앗으려고 저렇게 막 총 들고 학살하고 난리를 치고 있습니까? 아니요, 아니요. 주님이 말씀하신 성전은 거기에 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그러면 어디입니까? 여기 부산 문현동에 세워진 성동교회 예배당, 그 가운데서도 여기 강단 요 위에 요 마이크 있는 요 자리 여기가 성소입니까? 저는 옛날에 여기 이렇게 까만 커튼… 옛날 예배당은 여기 뒤에 까만색인가요? 자주색인가요? 이렇게 자주색 커튼 해놓으면 저는 그 뒤가 성소인 줄 알았어요. 그 뒤에 하나님의 영이 이렇게 막… 저거 걷으면 큰일 나는 줄 알았어요.

거기가 성소입니까? 아니요. 여러분 성소는 성령이 거하시는 전을 말합니다. 성령이 거하시는 전은 어디입니까? 성경은 분명하게 말씀하십니다. “너희 몸이 성령이 거하시는 전인 줄을 알지 못하느냐” 여러분 그것을 믿으십니까? 오늘 성령의 전으로 부르심을 받은 저와 여러분의 몸, 우리들의 삶, 우리들 자신으로부터 우리 안에 거하시는 성령이 흘러나오시는 역사가 오늘 우리들의 모든 삶 가운데 이루어지는 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다. 우리의 배로부터, 나의 삶으로부터 성령의 생수가 흘러나와 그것이 마른 땅을 적시고 그것이 생명의 나무로 자라게 하고, 그것이 열매를 맺게 하고 그 잎사귀는 약 재료가 되어 아픈 이들, 상처받은 이들, 썩어가는 세상을 치료하는 놀라운 역사가 일어나게 된다는 겁니다.

주님은 그 역사가 주님을 통하여 우리에게 주신 성령을 통해 이루어질 뿐만 아니라, 우리 안에 계신 성령을 통하여 우리를 통하여 우리의 배를 통하여 우리의 삶을 통하여 우리의 가정을 통해서 우리의 공동체를 통해서 우리의 모든 관계를 통해서 이 메마른 사막과 같은 세상 가운데 이루어질 것이라고 말씀하고 계신 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 누구든지 예수 그리스도를 믿는 사람에게는 성령 하나님, 새롭게 하시는 우리 하나님의 영이신 성령께서 우리 가운데 직접 임재하시고 내주하시고 교통하심이 이루어질 것이라고 성경은 우리에게 분명하게 약속하셨고, 그리고 그 약속이 이루어졌습니다. 언제예요? 따라 해 봅시다. “그가 영광을 받으신 후에” 예, 예. 요한은 그 놀라운 일이 예수 그리스도께서 영광을 받으신 이후에 이루어질 일이라고 말하고 있습니다. 39절 한번 보세요. “이는 그를 믿는 자들이 받을 성령을 가리켜 말씀하신 것이라 （예수께서 아직 영광을 받지 않으셨으므로 성령이 아직 그들에게 계시지 아니하시더라）”

예수께서 아직 영광을 받지 아니하셨다, 이게 무슨 말입니까? 요한이 말하는 예수 그리스도의 영광이란 십자가에 달리시는 걸 말합니다. 그의 죽으심을 말하는 겁니다. 하나님의 어린 양이신 그리스도께서 온 세상의 죄를, 저와 여러분의 죄를 사하시고 세상을 온전히 구속하시는 그 역사를 통해서, 이제 마지막 때에 주신다고 약속하신 그 성령님께서 주님으로부터 우리에게로 그의 제자들에게로 오시고, 그 제자들 안에 오신 그 성령께서 그들로부터 세상으로 흘러나와서 세상에 생명을 주시는, 세상을 변화시키는 역사가 이루어진다는 말입니다. 그러니까요 여러분 잘 생각하셔야 돼요. 요한복음에서 주님이 영광 받으신 그때가 언제냐, 그때는 바로 요엘 선지자가 말했던 모든 사람에게 주의 영을 부어주시는 그때를 말합니다. 그런데 그때가 이루어졌어요, 안 이루어졌어요? 이미 이루어졌어요. 언제예요? 여러분 우리 사도행전 2장에 오순절 성령 강림의 역사를 보았잖아요.

초대교회가 마가의 다락방에서 시작될 때 오순절 성령 강림의 역사가 있었고 그들이 서로 난 곳 방언으로 소통하는 역사가 있었고, 베드로가 그것을 보면서 “이것은 바로 요엘 선지자가 말했던 바로 그 마지막 날의 일이 이루어지는 것이다”라고 말했어요. 그러니까 여러분 선지자가 말한 마지막 때는 이미 시작된 겁니다. 예수님이 오시고 십자가에서 모든 구속의 사역을 이루시고 그가 주시겠다고 약속하신 성령을 부어주신 날로부터 이미 마지막 때는 시작되었고, 주님이 다시 오시는 그날까지 그 마지막 때가 계속되어서 그날이 이루어질 때까지 우리는 마지막 때를 사는 겁니다. 말세를 살아가는데 이 말세를 우리가 누구와 살아가느냐, 주님께서 교회에 부어주신 성령과 더불어 그 말세를 주님이 맡기신 사명을 감당하며 살아가게 되는 겁니다. 그러므로 지금 우리가 살고 있는 지금 이때는요, 주님이 이미 영광을 받으신 때예요.

요한은 아직 영광을 받지 아니하셨다 그랬는데 그건 십자가 지시기 전까지의 일이고, 지금은 주님이 이미 영광을 받으셨습니다. 요엘 선지자가 말한 대로 성령이 부어졌습니다. 주님의 몸된 교회가 이 땅에 세워졌습니다. 주님의 성령이 이미 오셨습니다. 그러니까 여러분 성령의 부으심이 이미 우리 가운데 있어요, 없어요? 있습니다. 이게 중요해요. 그러니까 여러분 지금 우리가 구해야 될 건 뭐냐, “성령을 주시옵소서. 성령이여 오시옵소서. 성령이여 우리에게 오셔서 다시 한번 오순절 날의 그 놀라운 표적을 경험하게 해 주시옵소서.” 맞아요, 틀려요? 아닙니다. 그게 아니라는 거예요. 왜요? 성령은 이미 오셨고 우리 가운데 거하시는 성령과 더불어 이제 우리는 성령을 통하여 우리 가운데 계신 성령이 우리로부터 흘러나와 온 세상을 변화시키는 그 역사를 구해야 될 때라는 거죠. 이게 중요한 겁니다. 여러분 주님의 성령이 이미 임하셨습니다.

예수님이 이 땅에서 공생애 사역을 시작하시면서 “주의 성령이 내게 임하셨으니” 하는 이사야 선지자의 말씀을 인용하시면서 사역을 시작하셨어요. 주의 성령이 그에게 임하실 때 이제 그가 살아 계신 주님의 성전으로서 이 땅 가운데서 사역하시는데, 하나님의 나라를 선포하시며 그 하나님의 나라를 선포하시는 그분을 통해서 어떤 역사가 일어나느냐? 누가복음 4장 18절부터 보니까 “주의 성령이 내게 임하셨으니 이는 가난한 자에게 복음을 전하게 하시려고 내게 기름을 부으시고 나를 보내사 포로 된 자에게 자유를, 눈 먼 자에게 다시 보게 함을 전파하며 눌린 자를 자유롭게 하고 주의 은혜의 해를 전파하게 하려 하심이라”

성령과 함께 예수 그리스도의 나라, 그 하나님 나라의 사역이 우리의 삶을 통해서 이루어지는데 가난한 자에게 복음이 전파되고 포로 된 자를 자유하게 하는 역사가 일어나고, 눈 먼 자가 어둠 가운데 있는 자가 빛을 보게 되는 역사가 일어나게 되고, 눌린 자가 자유롭게 되고 주의 은혜의 회복의 해, 생명의 역사가 저와 여러분의 삶을 통해서 일어나게 되는 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다. 그래서 고린도후서 3장 17절에도 보니까 “주는 영이시니 주의 영이 계신 곳에는 자유가 있느니라” 주의 성령이 함께하시는 곳에는 그 성령 받은 성도들의 삶에 자유의 역사가 일어나고, 또한 그 성도들을 통하여 온 세상 눌린 자, 얽매인 자에게 자유하게 되는 역사가 일어나게 되는 것을 여러분 믿으시기 바랍니다.

성령이 우리 안에 거하시는 우리의 삶을 통해서 모든 가난한 자에게, 포로 된 자에게, 눈 먼 자에게, 눌린 자에게 주님의 은혜와 자유와 생명을 나누고 전하는 그 역사가 저와 여러분을 통해서 일어나게 되는 것을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 여러분 그것이 성령강림절의 의미입니다. 이 성령강림절에 우리가 해야 될 일은 “또다시 이 오순절을 체험하게 해 주시옵소서” 그게 아니에요. “주여 성령을 주시옵소서. 성령 받는 체험을 주시옵소서” 그게 아니라니까요. 성령은 이미 우리 안에 계십니다. 우리는 이미 성령과 함께 살아가는 사람들입니다. 그러면 오늘 이 시간에 우리가 해야 될 일은 성령을 받은 우리를 통해서 오늘 우리의 삶 속에, 이 세상 속에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지를 살펴보는 것이 중요합니다.

에스겔 선지자가 본 환상처럼 성전의 문지방에서 흘러나온 그 물이 저 마른 땅을 적시고 저 계곡을 흘러 강이 흘러넘치듯이 저 썩어가는 바다, 죽어가는 바다를 살리는 것처럼 우리를 통해서 세상이 살아나고 있습니까? 우리를 통해서 주린 자들의 배가 채워지고 있습니까? 우리를 통해서 참으로 상처받은 자들이 치유받는 역사가 일어나고 있습니까? 오히려 반대로 우리가 그 상처와 아픔이 있는 자들을 조롱하고 나 몰라라 하고 우리의 배만 채우려고 한다면 과연 우리가 받은 것은 성령이 맞습니까? 여러분 이 성령 강림의 날, 우리를 주님의 몸된 교회로 세우신 이 날, 오늘 우리는 우리를 통해서 우리의 삶을 통해서 우리의 공동체를 통해서 우리의 이웃들 가운데 우리의 세상 가운데 어떤 일이 일어나고 있는지를 분명하게 살펴야 합니다. 그리고 그 생수의 강물이 내게서 흘러나오기를, 성령의 충만한 역사가 나로 말미암아 나를 통해서 시작되고 이루어지기를 간구하는 저와 여러분 되시기를 주의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Rivers of Living Water: The Transformed Life Flowing from the Temple of the Holy Spirit

Everyone, do you like traveling? Where is the place you most want to travel? Everyone has a bucket list of their own, right? I have been to Europe about once or twice so far, but there are still places I haven’t been to, and of all places, the ones I missed are the most important. Where is it? Southern Europe—Italy, Greece, Turkey—and connecting all the way to Western Asia—Palestine, Israel, and Jordan. Nominally, aren’t I someone who studies biblical studies? There are so many places I want to visit, confirm, and experience most, but I haven’t been able to go yet. When I firmly make up my mind to actually go, there are a few problems. Among them, the problem that instantly comes to mind is that this is a desert climate. The thing I find most difficult is when it’s hot. The heat, and then the thirst. Thirst—being thirsty is so difficult. The weather in the LA area of the United States is similar to the weather in this Mediterranean region. A senior pastor who used to minister in the LA area used to wear those white gloves—the ones I wear only exactly twice a year during sacraments—every single day.

He was walking around wearing those white gloves every day. “Pastor, why do you walk around wearing those gloves every day?” I asked, and he took off his glove to show me, and his palm was cracked wide open. “Oh, Pastor, why is your palm like that?” I asked, and he said, “Ah, this is from living in Naseong…” You all know what Naseong is, right? “If you go to Naseong, send a letter~” LA. The California area of the United States has a Mediterranean climate. It was originally a desert. Because he lived in that desert for a long time, his palms cracked wide open, and his skin became very, very bad. Yes. But everyone, it’s not just LA that is like that; the same things happen when we travel to the Holy Land along the Mediterranean coast of Israel… when we travel to what we call the Holy Land. Therefore, what’s important is that there is a routine: you have to drink water frequently. How frequently must you drink water? At least two cups every hour. Can you drink two cups an hour? It would be a disaster for me. If I drank like that… But you have no choice but to drink, because if you don’t, you face dehydration, dehydration… because it is so dry.

Dehydration symptoms can appear. Then some people say, “Oh, can’t we just drive around in a car?” But everyone, go there yourself. See if you can just drive around in a car. In our Busan, of course, the roads are well-made, so you can see things well even while riding in a car. But everyone, can you ride a car up to the top of Mount Sinai where Moses received the Ten Commandments? My mother-in-law was riding a camel up there, and she fell off the camel. Yes. There was no other way, they said. The caves of the Dead Sea—the Qumran caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls, the manuscripts of the Old Testament, were discovered—you have to go inside them to see them, right? Petra, the massive rock—the ancient palace built right into that rock, the fortress of Petra… It’s in Jordan, but they say we have to walk for quite a long time to get there. Therefore, everyone, what did I say is important? Drinking water, this routine. Everyone, routines are important for baseball players too. When they pick up the bat and step into the batter’s box, they don’t just swing. They touch their hat once, swing the bat once, adjust their waist…

Right. Look closely. The better a player is at baseball, the more consistent their routine is. They have the exact same repeated routine. They say you have to do that when you go to this Mediterranean region. As a routine, how many cups of water must you drink every hour? You must drink two cups. Everyone, we shared this lengthy story to think about the weather, the weather. When we think within this kind of climate, the stories of the Bible approach us in a completely new way. Most of the stories in the Bible are written against the backdrop of this desert climate. Therefore, in that place, what is water? It is life. Repeat after me: “Water is life.” Yes. Water is life. It is life itself. Therefore, stories about living water appear all over the Bible, and this living water doesn’t just mean clean water or fresh water in our language—it’s not just fresh water, but water is life, and water is existence. That is why Jesus speaks of this living water by connecting it to our life.

In today’s text, Jesus cried out that anyone who is thirsty should come to Him and drink. Now, this word, the word that Jesus spoke, is actually not Jesus’s own original creation; most of it contains words that Jesus quoted from the Old Testament scriptures, from the words spoken by the prophets. Do you know who spoke this word? Isaiah, Isaiah… Yes, a prophet named Isaiah… It is a word found in Isaiah 55. Shall we read it together? “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.” Therefore, this word is a word of invitation calling us to that grace without cost, without price. Now, John explains that Jesus cried out this word—Jesus quoting this prophet Isaiah—in the temple on the last day of the feast, specifically on the last day of the feast called the Feast of Booths. For the Israelites, if a feast lasts for several days among the festivals, when is the greatest day?

The last day, the final day, is the great day. The word He cried out going into the temple on that last great day. According to Jewish tradition, during the Feast of Booths celebration ritual, what the priest does on this last day is pour water and wine around the altar; that sequence existed. Therefore, for Jesus to go into the temple and speak of water on the last day of the Feast of Booths means He is fulfilling this role as the Priest. At that time, the content the priest prayed for was generally a prayer saying, “Give us rain. Cause the drought to cease,” or a prayer was offered asking for the resurrection of the dead, the resurrection of the righteous, on the last day. Therefore, everyone, both of these meanings are important. Here, for Jesus to say, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink,” to declare to us the fact that the water—that is, life, the life containing the hope of resurrection—originates precisely from Himself, is a very natural connection. Anyone who is thirsty, come to Me and drink the water I give.

This word is the Lord declaring the fact that He is the One who gives life to them. It means to receive and drink the life that the Lord gives. A person who drinks that water will not only obtain the Lord’s life, but next, a more important word appears. Now, where is this? Where is this? Am I too slim that you can’t see well? Yes, here from the heart, from the belly… He said that rivers of living water will flow out from his heart. And as John attached an explanation to this word, what did he say? He put it in parentheses—parentheses don’t appear much in the Bible, but here he puts it in parentheses and explains. Right, this living water, who did he say it is that those who believe in Him would receive? The Spirit, the Spirit… He kindly teaches us that it was spoken in reference to the Holy Spirit. Now, what does the Lord say He is giving us right now? He says He is giving us life, and what does John say that life is?

The Spirit… The Lord who gives life says He is giving us life, and John explains it as the Holy Spirit whom we would receive, and that Holy Spirit is not only something we receive from Jesus, but also from our heart… from where? Our belly. Are you embarrassed? It’s okay, it’s okay. Well, you all are slimmer than me anyway. He is saying it is the Holy Spirit that wells up from our bellies and overflows like rivers of living water. Now, everyone, if this word doesn’t paint a clear picture for you, let me help you. There is a river in the desert. You might ask what kind of river is in the desert? Everyone, in the desert, there is a river called a wadi. What kind of river did I say it is? A wadi, a wadi… The photo you are looking at now seems to be right around the middle between the dry season and the rainy season. Everyone, our Nakdong River in Busan overflows with water all year round, right? How abundant the water is and how grateful we are. Therefore, the land around the Nakdong River is all green. Around the Nakdong River, they grow green onions, giant green onions, and chives… we Busan people call it jeongguji.

You have no idea how much agricultural produce comes out from around the Nakdong River. However, everyone, a river in the desert is not like that. This wadi has river water like this during the rainy season, but when the dry season comes, it dries up completely. You can see it cracking wide open as it dries, right? When this remaining water completely dries up, it dries up hard, cracks, and dust blows all around… “Where is a river, a river? What do you mean a river, what kind of river is this?” people say. However, when the dry season passes and the rainy season begins, and rain falls, and that rain flows and flows and flows from the very top of the mountain, and that water flows and sweeps over the valley, this wadi valley becomes completely filled with water. As if wondering when this place was ever so completely dried up, water overflows in the riverbed that had been parched, and it sends the water of life to all the birds and in all directions. Now, therefore, the water of life that the Lord said He would give us refers precisely to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit working within us—at first, it seems to flow out from our inner self little by little, trickle by trickle, but that Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit who is life to us, that Holy Spirit of life does not just remain inside us; please believe the fact that it overflows from us, drenching our lives, and a work takes place where it flows, fills, and overflows like a great river. 1 John 5 speaks of this working of life this way: “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” When Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, is inside us, this life works anew within us, and this life becomes the Holy Spirit God who dwells within us. The Holy Spirit God does not just stay confined within us, but like a river in the desert that flows out from us, overflows, and drenches the dry ground, it flows and drenches and transforms the parched land, the parched world.

Please believe the fact that the work of that life will operate not only within us but throughout the entire world. Therefore, when you look at John 6:63, it says: “It is the Spirit who gives life;”. It is the Spirit who makes us alive. The Spirit of God is the life that makes us alive, and that life works within us, so please believe the fact that a wondrous work of grace takes place where the Holy Spirit overflows from us. From where did I say that Holy Spirit, that living water, flows out? From our bellies. From today on, those of you whose bellies have a bit of a small capacity, consider expanding it to at least my size. As the Lord proclaimed this word, He said, “As the Scripture has said,”. Therefore, just as the word He spoke previously, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink,” quoted the words of the prophet Isaiah, this word… “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water,” this word too is actually Jesus quoting the words of a prophet.

He is showing us an image from the Old Testament. In which book does this content appear? Try to guess. Everyone, this word of Jesus—this image of rivers of living water overflowing from our bellies—in the world, where on earth does this image appear? Everyone, hold up your church bulletin. When you turn to the very back page of our church bulletin, what appears at the very bottom? The text for the dawn prayer appears, right? Write it down next to it: ‘Community Bible Reading’. It is the bread of life to be read and meditated upon every single day not just by those who come to the dawn prayer, but by our entire Seongdong Church community. But where are we reading these days? Where are we reading these days? Ezekiel, yes. We are reading the Book of Ezekiel. However, everyone, this word of Jesus—this image where He said, “Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”—is precisely the image that appears in the Book of Ezekiel. If you are curious, begin meditating on the Book of Ezekiel starting today.

If you look at Ezekiel chapter 47, this content appears. Let’s read it together line by line. As you read, try to draw that picture in your mind. “Then he brought me back to the door of the temple,” The angel of God took the prophet Ezekiel—who was dragged away as a captive of Babylon as part of the ruined people of Judah in the land of Babylon—and took him in a vision before the door of the Jerusalem temple, which was already desolated. And this is the scene he is showing. “and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar. Then he brought me out by the way of the north gate and led me around on the outside to the outer gate that faces toward the east; and behold, water was trickling out on the south side.”

“Going on eastward with a measuring line in his hand, the man measured a thousand cubits, and then led me through the water, and it was ankle-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was knee-deep.” Up to where? It came up to the knees. The water was just increasing. “Again he measured a thousand, and led me through the water, and it was waist-deep. Again he measured a thousand, and it was a river that I could not pass through, for the water had risen; it was deep enough to swim in, a river that could not be passed through. And he said to me, ‘Son of man, have you seen this?’ Then he led me back to the bank of the river. As I went back, I saw on the bank of the river a very great number of trees on the one side and on the other. And he said to me, ‘This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,’” The Arabah is the sea. “and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh.” Everyone, that water which began flowing from the threshold of the temple… Everyone, where is the temple? It is at the top of Mount Zion in Jerusalem.

That water which flowed down from the top of Mount Zion flowed below the mountain, drenching the parched valleys, drenching the dry desert ground, and it didn’t just become a river to the extent of flowing as a great riverbed, but now it enters the sea, and instead of stagnation in stagnant water… everyone, no matter how much clean water flows down our Dongcheon stream, stagnant water keeps pooling, but everyone, even when this river water mixes with stagnant water, it does not become stagnant water, but rather, look at this sight where a river of life flows out, causing the sea to come alive. What kind of conclusion does this vision ultimately show us? Look at verse 12. “And on the banks, on both sides of the river, there will grow all kinds of trees for food.” It causes the land to come alive. It causes life to come alive. “Their leaves will not wither, nor their fruit fail, but they will bear fresh fruit every month, because the water for them flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for healing.” Everyone, doesn’t it seem like you’ve seen this scene somewhere before?

On the banks, on both sides of the river, fruit trees—trees of life—grow, and fruit is borne there, and that fruit fills us, fills the bellies of our hungry ones, and its leaves become medicine to heal the sick ones in the world; a work of healing the world takes place. Doesn’t it seem like a scene you’ve seen somewhere before? Where did you see it? At the very end of the Bible, in the Book of Revelation, please believe that exactly this kind of work takes place through that tree of life, through that tree of life that will be established there on the banks of that river of life in the place where the new heaven and the new earth are realized. John is clearly showing this vision—which the prophet Ezekiel beheld—through God’s revelation. The prophet Ezekiel is already showing us from this time the vision of the new heaven and the new earth, the New Jerusalem, that John shows us. When was this time? I told you it was the Babylonian captivity. It was a time when Israel and Judah were completely defeated, the king and the people were dragged away as captives, and the temple was desolated so that not one stone was left upon another.

In that place, the Lord showed the vision of that wondrous work where He says, “I will restore you. I will restore this temple.” Not only restoring it, but causing the entire world to come alive through that water of life overflowing from that place. Within this vision, everyone, we perhaps cannot easily depict the image of the world where this dry ground becomes filled with this water of life and is transformed. Because we live in a place that is always green and always overflowing with water. We don’t realize how deeply moving a sight this is. We lack a sense of earnestness. But imagine that you are living right in the middle of that desert. Imagine that you are standing upon that hard-dried, wide-cracked ground, where just walking upon it causes your soles to crack wide open and bleed, and your tongue sticks to the roof of your mouth, and all life is dying from a burning thirst. Water flows in that place. A river overflows and flows in that place. That river water, that water of life flows and saves the sea of darkness that was dying.

Everyone, to the ancients, the sea was a symbol of fear, chaos, and death. That sea comes alive. It overcomes those forces of darkness. Life comes alive, fish come alive… Everyone, from where did I say that water came out? It said that water came out from the sanctuary. Where is the sanctuary? Today’s word—this is the core. Where is the sanctuary? Is it that house built of stones constructed in Jerusalem? Is that why people are holding guns, slaughtering, and causing chaos like that to snatch Jerusalem away from other nations? No, no. The temple the Lord spoke of is not located there. Then where is it? Is it the Seongdong Church chapel established here in Munhyeon-dong, Busan, and even within it, right here on this pulpit, this spot where this microphone is—is this the sanctuary? In the past, when a black curtain… did the old chapel have a black one back here? Or a purple one? When they put up a purple curtain like that, I used to think behind it was the sanctuary. The Spirit of God was just like that behind it… I thought it would be a disaster if that was pulled back.

Is that place the sanctuary? No. Everyone, the sanctuary refers to the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells. Where is the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells? The Bible states clearly: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you,”. Do you believe that? Please believe the fact that the work where the Holy Spirit—who dwells inside us—flows out from the bodies, the lives, and the very selves of you and me who have been called as temples of the Holy Spirit today is being accomplished in all of our lives today. Out from our bellies, out from my life, the living water of the Holy Spirit flows out, and it drenches the parched ground, causes it to grow into trees of life, causes it to bear fruit, and its leaves become medicine to bring about a wondrous work of healing the sick ones, the wounded ones, and the decaying world.

Please believe that the Lord is saying that work will be accomplished not only through the Holy Spirit given to us through the Lord, but through the Holy Spirit who is inside us—through us, through our bellies, through our lives, through our families, through our communities, and through all of our relationships—in the midst of this world that is like a parched desert. To anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, the Bible has clearly promised us that the Holy Spirit God—the Spirit of our God who makes all things new—will directly come upon us, indwell us, and bring about fellowship, and that promise has been fulfilled. When was it? Repeat after me: “After He was glorified,” Yes, yes. John is saying that marvelous event would take place after Jesus Christ was glorified. Look at verse 39. “Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

Jesus was not yet glorified—what does this mean? The glory of Jesus Christ that John speaks of refers to Him being hung on the cross. It refers to His death. Through that work where Christ, who is the Lamb of God, forgives the sins of the whole world—the sins of you and me—and completely redeems the world, the Holy Spirit whom He promised to give in the last days comes from the Lord to us, to His disciples, and that Holy Spirit who has come inside those disciples flows out from them into the world, bringing about the work of giving life to the world and transforming the world. Therefore, everyone, you must think carefully. In the Gospel of John, when was that time when the Lord was glorified? That time refers precisely to that time spoken of by the prophet Joel when He pours out the Spirit of the Lord upon all people. But has that time been realized, or has it not? It has already been realized. When was it? Everyone, we saw the work of the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost in Acts chapter 2, didn’t we?

When the early church began in Mark’s upper room, there was the work of the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, and there was a work where they communicated with one another in the native tongues wherein they were born, and Peter, looking at that, said, “This is precisely that work of the last days spoken of by the prophet Joel being fulfilled.” Therefore, everyone, the last days spoken of by the prophet has already begun. From the day Jesus came, accomplished all the work of redemption on the cross, and poured out the Holy Spirit He promised to give, the last days had already begun, and until the day the Lord comes again, those last days continue, and we live living out the last days until that day is realized. We live through the end times, but with whom do we live through these end times? We live through them together with the Holy Spirit whom the Lord poured out upon the church, fulfilling the mission the Lord entrusted to us. Therefore, right now, this time in which we are living, is a time when the Lord has already been glorified.

John said He was not yet glorified, but that was concerning the events up until He carried the cross, and now the Lord has already been glorified. Just as the prophet Joel said, the Holy Spirit has been poured out. The church, which is the body of the Lord, has been established on this earth. The Holy Spirit of the Lord has already come. Therefore, everyone, is the pouring out of the Holy Spirit already among us, or is it not? It is. This is crucial. Therefore, everyone, what is it that we must ask for right now? “Give us the Holy Spirit. Come, Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, come to us and let us experience once again that wondrous sign of the day of Pentecost.” Is that right, or is it wrong? It is wrong. That is not it. Why? Because the Holy Spirit has already come, and together with the Holy Spirit who dwells among us, now is the time when we must ask for that work where the Holy Spirit who is among us flows out from us and transforms the entire world. This is what is important. Everyone, the Holy Spirit of the Lord has already come upon us.

As Jesus began His public ministry on this earth, He began His ministry while quoting the words of the prophet Isaiah, saying, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,”. When the Holy Spirit of the Lord came upon Him, He ministered on this earth as the living temple of the Lord, proclaiming the Kingdom of God, and through Him who proclaimed that Kingdom of God, what kind of work took place? Looking from Luke 4:18, it says: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Together with the Holy Spirit, the ministry of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ—the ministry of that Kingdom of God—is accomplished through our lives, where the gospel is proclaimed to the poor, a work takes place setting the captives free, a work takes place where the blind and those who are in darkness come to see the light, the oppressed are set free, and the year of restoration of the Lord’s favor—the work of life—takes place through the lives of you and me. Therefore, looking also at 2 Corinthians 3:17, it says: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Wherever the Holy Spirit of the Lord is present together, the work of freedom takes place in the lives of those saints who received the Holy Spirit, and furthermore, please believe the fact that through those saints, the work of setting free those who are oppressed and bound throughout the entire world takes place.

Please believe that through our lives where the Holy Spirit dwells within us, the work of sharing and delivering the Lord’s favor, freedom, and life to all the poor, the captives, the blind, and the oppressed takes place through you and me. Everyone, that is the meaning of Pentecost. What we must do on this Pentecost is not say, “Let us experience this Pentecost all over again,”. That is not it. It’s not saying, “Lord, give us the Holy Spirit. Give us the experience of receiving the Holy Spirit,”. The Holy Spirit is already inside us. We are already people who live together with the Holy Spirit. Then, what we must do at this time is examine what kind of things are taking place within our lives, within this world, through us who have received the Holy Spirit; that is what is important.

Just like the vision the prophet Ezekiel saw, where that water flowing out from the threshold of the temple drenched that parched ground, and just as the river overflowed and flowed through that valley, saving that decaying sea, that dying sea—is the world coming alive through us? Are the bellies of the hungry ones being filled through us? Is the work of those who are truly wounded receiving healing taking place through us? On the contrary, if we mock those who have those wounds and pains, say we don’t care, and try to fill only our own bellies, is it really true that what we received is the Holy Spirit? Everyone, on this day of the descent of the Holy Spirit—this day when He established us as the church, which is the body of the Lord—today we must clearly examine what kind of things are taking place among our neighbors, within our world, through us, through our lives, and through our communities. And I pray in the name of the Lord that you will be those who earnestly plead for those rivers of living water to flow out from me, and for the full work of the Holy Spirit to begin and be accomplished through me.
