살아난 아들 (왕상 17:17-24)

오늘 우리는 아들의 죽음이라고 하는 충격적인 일을 경험했으나, 그 죽었던 아들이 다시 살아나는 기적을 체험한 한 여인의 이야기를 살펴보게 되었습니다. 이 여인이 누구죠? 지난 시간에 살펴보았던 사르밧에 살던 과부였습니다. 남편도 없이 자녀들을 바라보고 자녀들에게 소망을 가지고 살아가던 이 여인에게 갑작스럽게 아들이 죽었다고 하는 이 충격적인 사건은 너무나도 절망적인 사건이었지만, 하나님의 은혜로 인하여 다시 살아나고 다시 소망을 얻게 되었다고 하는 놀라운 이야기를 우리가 살펴보게 됐습니다. 이 여인은 비가 내리지 않는 상황 가운데서도 하나님의 놀라운 은총을 직접 경험한 여인이었습니다. 이제 먹을 것이 없어서 ‘이제는 다 끝났다, 이제는 아무런 소망이 없다’라고 생각되던 바로 그 절망적인 상황에, 하나님께서는 놀랍게도 엘리야 선지자를 이 여인에게 보내어 주셔서 은총을 베풀어 주셨다고 하는 이야기 지난 시간에 우리가 살펴본 바 있습니다.

그 은총의 손길이 아주 이상한 방법을 통해서 이 여인의 가정 가운데 임하게 되었는데요. 얼마 남지 아니한 것을 엘리야를 위하여 내어놓는 그러한 선택… 자신이 먹을 것도 없고 이제는 마지막 먹을 것밖에 남지 아니한 그 마지막 양식을 친근한 마음으로 이 엘리야 선지자에게 내놓았던 그 선택이 사실은 절망적인 선택이 아니라 사실은 그 여인을 살리는 선택이 되었고, 오히려 하나님의 은총을 경험하게 되는 놀라운 방법이었다고 하는 것을 우리가 지난 시간에 살펴보았는데… 그런데 그 여인의 가정 가운데 아주 끔찍한 일이 일어난 겁니다. 아들이 죽게 된 것이죠. 당시로서는 병이 들면 별다른 치료제가 없이 시름시름 앓다가 죽을 수밖에 없었던 그 상황이었는데요. 그 상황 가운데서 이런 힘들고 어려운 고통스러운 상황을 당하게 되는 모습을 보면서 우리들은 이때 질문을 던지게 됩니다. “왜 이 여인의 아들이 죽게 되었을까?”라고 하는 질문이죠. 이런 질문을 던지는 이유는 왜 우리가 질문을 던지게 되겠습니까?

죽으면 죽은 것이지, 왜 이 여인의 아들이 죽었을까라고 하는 그 이유를 묻는 질문을 던질 수 있는 이유가 무엇입니까? 그것은 이 세상을 하나님께서 다스리시고 계시다고 하는 믿음 때문입니다. 이 세상에서 일어나는 모든 일들이 우연히 일어나는 것이 아니고, 이 세상에서 일어나는 모든 일들이 하나님의 섭리와 계획 가운데, 허락하심 가운데, 하나님의 통치 가운데서 모든 일들이 일어나는 것이라고 하는 사실을 우리가 믿기 때문에 우리는 질문을 던지게 되는 거죠. “하나님께서는 왜 이런 끔찍한 일을 우리들에게 허용하셨는가?”라고 하는 질문입니다. 만일 하나님이 계시지 않는다고 한다면 그런 질문을 던질 필요가 없습니다. 우연이니까요. 살다 보면 이런 일도 있고 저런 일도 있고 그냥 아무런 목적도 없이 방향도 없이 그냥 좌충우돌하면서 아무 일이나 일어날 수 있는 게 이 세상이라고 생각한다고 하면 우리는 이런 질문을 던질 이유가 없을 겁니다.

하지만 우리가 분명하게 알고 믿고 있는 것이 있다고 한다면 하나님이 이 세상의 주인이라고 하는 것입니다. 하나님이 이 세상을 다스리시는 하나님이시라고 하는 것이죠. 그 하나님이 어떤 하나님인가? 그 하나님이 공의의 하나님이실 뿐만 아니라 공평하신 하나님이실 뿐만 아니라, 그 하나님이 어떤 하나님인가? 사랑이 많으신 하나님이라고 하는 사실을 생각해 본다고 하면 그 하나님의 성품에 비추어 보아서 오늘날 우리가 만나는 이 현실이 이해가 되지 않는 겁니다. 왜 공평하신 하나님이 왜 이렇게 나에게 불공평하게 행하시는가, 왜 공의의 하나님이 왜 이렇게 불공정하게 행하시는가라고 하는 질문이 우리들의 마음 가운데 떠오르게 되어 있는 것이고, 왜 사랑의 하나님이 왜 우리를 무자비하게 이렇게 대우하시는가라고 하는 그 질문을 우리가 던져보게 되는 것입니다.

따라서 하나님께서 살아 계시고 이 세상을 다스린다고 하는 사실을 믿는 사람들은 무슨 일을 만날 때마다 질문을 던지지 아니할 수가 없는 것이고, 그럴 때 우리가 제일 먼저 내놓을 수 있는 대답이 있다고 한다면 우리가 하나님 앞에 죄인이라고 하는 사실을 고백하게 되는 것입니다. 내가 어떠한 죄와 허물 가운데 있기에 하나님께서 나를 이렇게 벌하시는가? 나는 괜찮은 줄 알았고 나는 그런대로 괜찮게 살고 있는 것처럼 생각되었지만 사실은 그것은 다른 사람들과 비교해 보았을 때뿐이고 감추어져 있기 때문에 그런 것이지, 불꽃 같은 눈으로 바라보시는 그 하나님께서 우리의 심령을 꿰뚫어 보신다고 한다면 그렇다고 한다면 내가 하나님 앞에 알고 지은 죄, 모르고 지은 죄… 내가 어떠한 죄악 가운데 있기 때문에 하나님께서 이러한 일들을 행하시는가라고 하는 것을 질문하면서 자신의 죄악을 떠올리게 된다고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 오늘 본문에 보면 그래서 이 여인은 엘리야 선지자 앞에 가서 질문을 던진 겁니다.

열왕기상 17장 18절의 말씀에 이 여인이 이야기하는 것이죠. “여인이 엘리야에게 이르되 하나님의 사람이여 당신이 나와 더불어 무슨 상관이 있기에 내 죄를 생각나게 하고 또 내 아들을 죽게 하려고 내게 오셨나이까” 고난을 당할 때마다 아픔을 당할 때마다 우리들이 제일 먼저 돌아보게 되는 것은 나의 부족함, 나의 허물들을 먼저 바라볼 수밖에 없는 것이 어쩌면 당연하다 하겠습니다. 그런데 만일 이런 상황 가운데서 우리가 우리 자신의 허물들을 되돌아보고 그리고 하나님 앞에 회개하며 엎드릴 수 있다고 한다면, 사실은 이 재난의 상황이 우리들에게 저주가 아니라 은총의 도구가 될 수도 있는 것이죠.

왜냐하면 하나님은 어떠한 하나님이신가? 우리가 회개하고 돌아오면 그 죄가 얼마나 크든지 그 죄가 주홍빛 같을지라도 눈과 같이 하얗게 씻어줄 것이고, 그 죄가 아무리 크고 정말 심각한 것이라 할지라도 하나님 앞에서는 용서받지 못할 죄악이 하나도 없기 때문에, 만일 이런 상황 가운데서 우리가 우리 자신의 죄악을 되돌아볼 수만 있고 그리고 우리가 지금까지 해왔던 잘못들을 되돌려서 이제는 믿음의 길로 돌아설 수만 있다고 한다면 고난도 우리들에게 은총의 방편이 될 것입니다. 요엘 2장 13절 말씀에 하나님께서 말씀하십니다. “너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고 너희 하나님 여호와께로 돌아올지어다 그는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인해가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시나니”

하나님께서 치셨다가도 싸매어 주시고 낮추셨다가도 일으켜 세우시며 하나님께서 우리를 회복시켜 주시는 하나님이시기 때문에, 우리가 고난의 상황 가운데서 우리 자신을 돌아보고 회개할 수 있다고 한다면 그것이 우리들에게 은총이 될 것입니다. 오히려 부가 넘쳐나고 모든 것을 다 가지고 있다고 할지라도 하나님 앞에서 교만한 인생이 된다고 한다면 사실은 그 부가 우리들에게 저주거리가 되는 것과는 정반대의 모습이라고 하겠습니다. 사사기 성경 말씀을 보면 이스라엘 민족이 회개할 때마다 하나님께서는 또 용서하셨습니다. 또 용서하셨습니다.

지난번에 그렇게 용서해 줬는데도 또 죄를 짓는 그 이스라엘 민족을 하나님께서는 또 사사를 보내서 회복시켜 주시고 또 용서해 주시는, 한없이 용서를 반복해 주시는 그 하나님의 모습을 우리가 볼 수가 있겠는데, 따라서 오늘 저와 여러분들이 이 말씀을 기억하면서 우리가 하나님 앞에 어떠한 일들을 만나든지 우리 자신의 허물을 되돌아보며 회개의 자리로 나아갈 수 있는 믿음의 결단이 있어야 될 줄로 미습니다. 하지만 모든 고난이 다 우리의 죄에 대한 심판의 성격을 가지고 있는 것은 아닙니다. 대표적인 예가 어디서 볼 수 있죠? 욥의 경우에서 볼 수 있는 겁니다. 욥이 무슨 잘못을 해서 그의 가정에 재난이 닥치게 된 게 아니거든요. 그냥 아무 이해할 수 없는 이유로 욥에게 고난이 닥쳤던 것을 우리가 보게 되는 겁니다. 복음을 전하는 자들이 복음을 전하다가 고난을 당하게 되는데, 그것은 죄를 지었기 때문이 아니라 복음을 전하고 주님을 따르다가 고난을 당하는 일들도 있는 겁니다.

그러니까 이 사르밧 여인의 경우 우리가 무슨 대답을 내놓을 수 있는가? 사실은 대답을 내놓기가 어려워요. 간단하게 쉽게 설명하기가 어려운 겁니다. 우리의 머리로서는 이 세상에서 일어나고 있는 모든 일들에 대한 대답을 아주 간단명료하게 내놓을 방법이 없는 겁니다. 그래서 우리가 함부로 판단을 하면 안 되는 거죠. “죄 때문이야, 무엇 때문이야”라고 함부로 이야기하는 것은 어리석은 것이고 하나님의 말씀을 제대로 깨닫지 못한 것이라고 할 수가 있을 겁니다. 때로는 아무런 이유 없이 그런 일들이 일어날 뿐만 아니라, 예수님께서는 무슨 말씀을 하셨습니까? 그 일이 왜 일어났는가보다도 ‘무엇을 위하여’ 일어났는가를 바라볼 필요가 있다고 말씀해 주셨습니다. 요한복음 9장 3절 말씀에 보면 맹인 된 사람을 향해서 예수님께서 말씀해 주셨습니다.

“예수께서 대답하시되 이 사람이 나 그 부모의 죄로 인한 것이 아니라 그에게서 하나님이 하시는 일을 나타내고자 하심이라”고 말씀해 주셨습니다. 따라서 우리가 때로는 우리의 죄악을 회개하는 것도 필요하겠지만 때로는 더 중요한 것이 있다고 한다면, 무엇 때문에라기보다는 ‘무엇을 위하여’ 하나님께서 이러한 시련과 아픔을 내게 주시고, 이걸 통해서 하나님께서는 어떤 영광을 받으시길 원하시고, 이걸 통해서 우리가 무엇을 깨닫게 하시기를 원하시고, 우리가 이것을 통해서 어떤 길로 나아가야 될 것인가를 얻게 하시려는 하나님의 섭리라고 하는 점을 기억해야 할 것이죠. 따라서 우리는 당황하지 말아야 합니다. 갑작스럽게 아들이 죽는 이 사건을 보면서 답답해하고 괴로워하고 절망할 것이 아니라, 우리는 이 순간에 하나님의 선하신 뜻과 계획이 어디에 있는지, 하나님께서는 이 일을 통하여 무엇을 이루시기를 원하시는지를 곰곰이 묵상하며 하나님 앞에 엎드려야 할 것입니다.

사르밧 여인은 엘리야 선지자 앞에 섰습니다. 그리고 원망하는 것 같았고 불평하는 것 같았고, 왜 선지자가 오셔서 왜 나로 하여금 이런 고난을 받게 하느냐 인과관계가 맞지 않는 것 같은 불평을 하게 되는 것 같고 체념하는 것 같고, 그래서 믿음이 없는 것처럼 보이는 표현들을 엘리야 앞에서 표현하고 있지만 사실은 이게 무엇이냐 하면 ‘기도’라고 말할 수가 있습니다. 기도가 무엇인가? 기도는 우리가 정답을 하나님 앞에 들려드리는 게 기도가 아니에요. 무엇이 신학적으로 성경적으로 옳은가를 제대로 잘 해서 하나님 앞에 들려드리는 게 기도가 아니라, 기도가 무엇이냐 하면 우리의 마음에 있는 그런 감정을, 우리의 슬픔과 아픔을 하나님 앞에 그대로 드러내는 것이 기도이기 때문에 그렇습니다. 엘리야 선지자에게 나아갔지만 사실은 이것은 하나님 앞에 기도한 거라고 할 수가 있습니다.

오늘날어야 예수님께서 십자가 위에서 못 박혀 죽으시고 하나님과 우리 사이에 죄의 담을 제거해 주셔서 우리가 직접 하나님 앞에 나아갈 수 있었지만, 이 구약시대 때는 직접 하나님 앞에 나아가는 것보다도 하나님의 사람에게 나아가서 자신의 아픔과 괴로움을 토로하고 하나님께 기도해 달라고 말했던 것을 생각한다면 이 여인은 지금 하나님 앞에 울부짖는 것이라고 할 수가 있겠습니다. 그래서 이 여인이 울부짖었을 때 놀라운 일이 일어난 것이죠. 엘리야 선지자는 이 아들을 데려다가 세 번 펴서 엎드리고 하나님께 울부짖었을 때, 하나님께서는 놀라운 은총을 이 가정 가운데 허락해 주셨습니다. 아무에게도, 아무도 할 수 없는 그 놀라운 일을 해주셨는데, 열왕기상 17장 22절의 말씀에 “여호와께서 엘리야의 소리를 들으시므로 그 아이의 혼이 몸으로 돌아오고 살아난지라” 표현해 주셨습니다. 하나님께서 다시 한번 이 힘없는 여인에게 은총을 베풀어 주셨습니다. 그래서 이 여인이 더더욱 깨닫게 된 것이죠.

우리의 소망이 어디에 있는가? 우리의 소망이 이 세상에 있는 것이 아니라 하나님께 있는 것이고, 우리의 소망이 바알 신에게 있는 것이 아니라 참되신 하나님 여호와 하나님에게 있는 거라고 하는 사실을 다시 한번 생생하게 깨닫게 만들어주는 그런 엄청난 경험을 하게 된 것입니다. 그래서 이 여인이 고백을 하게 되었는데요. 열왕기상 17장 24절의 말씀 가운데서 “여인이 엘리야에게 이르되 내가 이제야 당신은 하나님의 사람이시요 당신의 입에 있는 여호와의 말씀이 진실한 줄 아노라” 고백하게 된 것입니다. 이 말은, ‘이제야 알게 되었다’고 하는 말의 의미는 전에는 몰랐다고 하는 말이 아니라 ‘더 확실하게 알았다’는 거예요. 더 실감하게 되었다고 하는 말이요.

예전에도 하나님의 은혜를 알았지만 더더욱 실감하게 되었다고 하는 것이고, 그래서 ‘하나님이 정말 나를 사랑하시는구나, 하나님이 정말 나에게 은혜의 하나님이시구나’라고 하는 사실을 깨닫게 되면서 이 여인이 더욱더 하나님을 더욱더 신뢰하는 단계로 넘어가게 된 것이죠. 오늘 우리 모두에게도 이러한 일이 필요할 거라고 믿습니다. 오늘 우리들의 삶 가운데서 하나님을 좀 더 깊이 알고 믿고 신뢰하는 단계로, 한 단계 믿음이 업그레이드되는 그런 믿음의 모습들이, 진보가 우리들 가운데 있어야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 그래서 우리의 기도의 제목, 오늘 기도할 기도의 제목이 있다고 하면 무엇입니까? “주님, 주님을 더욱더 깨닫게 하여 주옵소서.” 이게 우리가 기도해야 될 기도의 제목입니다. 물론 하나님께서 모든 경우에 다 이 여인에게 하셨던 것처럼 아이를 살려주는 그런 일들을 해 주시지 않을 수는 있습니다. 하지만 항상 또 동일한 것이 있는데 그것은 무엇입니까? 하나님께서 우리를 사랑하신다고 하는 사실입니다.

우리들의 믿음이라고 하는 것은 마치 이스라엘 백성들과 같이 기적을 만나면 기뻐했지만 조그마한 어려움을 만나면 또 무너지고 또 무너지고 할 때가 많습니다. 하지만 우리의 기도의 제목이 있다고 한다면 “주님, 그러나 그러한 어떠한 상황 속에서도 하나님이 정말로 나의 하나님이시요 우리 주님만이 우리의 소망이라고 하는 사실을 늘 발견케 하여 주옵소서.” 기도하는 가운데 하나님의 놀라운 사랑의 손길의 역사가 우리 가운데 넘쳐날 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 그래서 이 여인의 고백이 “내가 지금까지 알았던 것보다도 더 잘 알게 되었다”, 욥의 고백 “내가 지금까지 귀로만 들었지만 내가 지금 이제 눈으로 보게 되었다”처럼, 믿음이 한 단계 한 단계 업그레이드되는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

Beyond Despair to Divine Certainty: The Upgraded Faith of the Widow of Zarephath

Today, we examined the story of a woman who experienced the shocking event of her son’s death, yet witnessed the miracle of that dead son coming back to life. Who is this woman? She was the widow living in Zarephath whom we looked at in our last session. To this woman, who lived without a husband, looking only at her child and placing all her hope in him, the sudden death of her son was an incredibly despairing event. However, we looked at the wondrous story of how, through God’s grace, he came back to life and she regained hope. This woman was someone who had directly experienced God’s marvelous favor even in the midst of a severe drought. Last time, we looked at how, in that very desperate situation where there was no food left and she thought, “Now it is all over, there is no more hope,” God wonderfully sent the prophet Elijah to this woman to bestow His favor.

That hand of favor came upon this woman’s household through a very unusual method. It was the choice to offer the little she had left for Elijah… That choice—to present with a warm heart the very last of her food to the prophet Elijah when she herself had nothing to eat and only one final meal remained—was actually not a desperate choice, but one that saved her. Rather, we saw last time that it was a wondrous way to experience God’s favor… But then, a truly horrific thing happened in this woman’s home. Her son died. At that time, when someone fell ill, there was no distinct treatment, and they had no choice but to waste away and die. Seeing her face such a difficult, trying, and painful situation, we are led to ask a question at this point: “Why did this woman’s son die?”. The reason we ask such a question—why do we ask it?.

When someone dies, they die; so what is the reason we can ask why this woman’s son had to die? It is because of our faith that God governs this world. We ask this question because we believe that all things happening in this world do not occur by chance, but that everything takes place within God’s providence, plan, permission, and sovereignty. The question is, “Why did God allow such a horrific thing to happen to us?”. If God did not exist, there would be no need to ask such a question. Because it would just be a coincidence. If we thought this world was a place where things just happen by crashing into each other without any purpose or direction, and that both good and bad things just occur as we live, we would have no reason to ask this question.

However, if there is something we clearly know and believe, it is that God is the Master of this world. It is that God is the One who governs this world. What kind of God is He? When we reflect on the fact that He is not only a God of justice and a fair God, but also a deeply loving God, the reality we face today does not make sense when viewed in the light of His character. Questions are bound to arise in our hearts, such as: why does a fair God act so unfairly toward me, why does a God of justice act so unjustly, and why does a God of love treat us so mercilessly?.

Therefore, those who believe that God is alive and governs this world cannot help but ask questions whenever they encounter any event. When that happens, the very first response we can offer is to confess the fact that we are sinners before God. What kind of sin and transgression am I harboring that causes God to punish me like this? I thought I was okay, and it seemed to me that I was living a decent life, but in truth, that was only when compared to other people and because it was hidden. If that God, who looks with eyes like flames of fire, pierces through our souls, then we are led to ask what kind of sins—sins committed knowingly or unknowingly—we are mired in that cause God to bring about these events, and we find ourselves recalling our own wrongdoings. In today’s text, that is why this woman went before the prophet Elijah and threw out a question.

In the words of 1 Kings 17:18, the woman says this: “And she said to Elijah, ‘What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance and to cause the death of my son!’” Whenever we face affliction and pain, it is perhaps natural that the very first thing we look back on is our own shortcomings and our own faults. However, if we can reflect on our own transgressions in the midst of such a situation and fall prostrate in repentance before God, then this disastrous situation can actually become an instrument of favor rather than a curse for us.

Why? Because what kind of God is He? If we repent and return, no matter how great that sin may be, even if it is like scarlet, He will wash it white as snow. No matter how large or truly severe a sin may be, there is not a single sin before God that cannot be forgiven. Therefore, if we can just look back on our own sins in this situation and turn away from the wrongs we have done until now to return to the path of faith, even affliction will become a means of favor for us. In Joel 2:13, God speaks: “and rend your hearts and not your garments.’ Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.”

Because God is a God who binds up after striking, who raises up after humbling, and who restores us, it will become a favor to us if we can examine ourselves and repent in the midst of a painful situation. On the contrary, even if someone overflows with wealth and possesses everything, if they become proud before God, that wealth actually becomes a source of a curse to them—which is the exact opposite dynamic. When we look at the Book of Judges, every time the people of Israel repented, God forgave them again. He forgave them again.

Even though they had been forgiven like that before, when the people of Israel sinned yet again, we can see the image of that God who repeatedly and endlessly forgave them, sending a judge to restore them and forgive them once more. Therefore, as you and I remember this Word today, I believe there must be a decision of faith within us to look back on our own shortcomings and move toward a place of repentance, no matter what kind of events we encounter before God. However, not all suffering carries the characteristic of judgment for our sins. Where can we see a representative example of this? We can see it in the case of Job. Job did not face disaster in his household because of some wrongdoing he committed. We see that suffering came upon Job for reasons that simply cannot be understood. Those who preach the Gospel encounter suffering while preaching, but that is not because they committed a sin; rather, there are times when people face suffering precisely because they are preaching the Gospel and following the Lord.

Therefore, in the case of this woman of Zarephath, what kind of answer can we offer? In truth, it is difficult to offer an answer. It cannot be explained simply or easily. With our human intellect, there is no way to present a simple and clear answer for all the events occurring in this world. That is why we must not pass judgment carelessly. Saying rashly, “It’s because of sin,” or “It’s because of this or that,” is foolish and shows a failure to properly comprehend God’s Word. Sometimes such things happen without any apparent reason, and furthermore, what did Jesus say? He told us that we need to look at ‘what it is for’ rather than why it happened. In John 9:3, Jesus spoke concerning a man who was born blind.

“Jesus answered, ‘It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.’” Therefore, while it is necessary at times to repent of our sins, there are times when something more important exists. Rather than asking because of what, we must remember that it is God’s providence to give us these trials and pains ‘for the sake of what’—what kind of glory He desires to receive through this, what He wants us to realize through this, and what kind of path He wants us to gain through this. Consequently, we must not panic. Looking at this event where her son suddenly died, we must not feel suffocated, distressed, or despondent; instead, at this moment, we must deeply meditate on where God’s good will and plan lie, and what He desires to accomplish through this work, as we prostrate ourselves before Him.

The woman of Zarephath stood before the prophet Elijah. And she seemed to resent him, she seemed to complain, and she seemed to utter complaints that lacked a logical cause-and-effect relationship, asking why the prophet had come to make her suffer such affliction. She seemed to give up, and though she expressed words before Elijah that made her look as if she lacked faith, in reality, this can be called ‘prayer’. What is prayer? Prayer is not us reciting the correct answers to God. It is not about formulating what is theologically and scripturally correct to present it to God; rather, what is prayer? It is because prayer is displaying our heart’s emotions—our sadness and our pain—exactly as they are before God. Although she went to the prophet Elijah, this can actually be considered a prayer offered before God.

Today, because Jesus died on the cross and removed the wall of sin between God and us, we can go directly before God. However, in this Old Testament era, rather than going directly before God, people went to a man of God to pour out their pain and misery and ask him to pray to God. Thinking of that, this woman is currently crying out before God. And so, when this woman cried out, a marvelous thing occurred. The prophet Elijah took this son, stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried out to God, and God granted a wondrous favor to this household. He performed a marvelous work that no one else could ever do, and in the words of 1 Kings 17:22, it is expressed: “And the LORD listened to the voice of Elijah. And the life of the child came into him again, and he revived.” God once again bestowed His favor upon this powerless woman. Because of this, this woman came to realize it all the more deeply.

Where does our hope lie? She experienced an immense event that made her realize vividly once again that our hope does not lie in this world but in God, and that our hope does not rest in the god Baal but in the true God, Yahweh, the LORD God. Because of this, this woman made a confession. In the words of 1 Kings 17:24: “And the woman said to Elijah, ‘Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.’” This statement—the meaning of her saying ‘Now I know’—does not mean she didn’t know before, but that ‘she came to know with greater certainty’. It means it became more real to her.

She already knew God’s grace previously, but it became far more real to her. As she realized, “God truly loves me, God is truly a God of grace to me,” this woman advanced to a stage of trusting God even more deeply. I believe that this exact process is necessary for all of us today. Within our lives today, there must be a baseline progress—an instance where our faith gets upgraded to a stage of knowing, believing, and trusting God much more deeply. Therefore, if there is a prayer topic for us to pray about today, what is it? “Lord, cause me to comprehend You even more fully.” This is the topic we must pray for. Of course, God may choose not to perform works that bring a child back to life in every single instance as He did for this woman. However, there is something that always remains identical, and what is that? It is the fact that God loves us.

Our faith is often like that of the people of Israel—we rejoice when we encounter a miracle, but when we face a minor difficulty, we crumble again and again. However, if there is a prayer topic for us, it is: “Lord, nevertheless, allow us to always discover in any situation that You are truly my God and that our Lord alone is our hope.” As we pray for this, I pray in the name of the Lord that the work of God’s wondrous hand of love will overflow among us. May we all experience our faith upgrading step by step, just like this woman’s confession, “I have come to know better than what I knew before,” and Job’s confession, “I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you.” I bless you all in the name of the Lord.
