내가 처음 미국에 갔을 때, 미국 사람들은 모두 천사처럼 보였다. 따뜻하고 사랑이 많고 배려가 있는 사람들을 보면서 배울 것이 많다고 생각했다. 이게 다 기독교적 가치 위에 나라가 세워졌기 때문이 아닐까 생각하기도 했다. 하지만 차갑게 돌변해버린 미국인을 보게 된 것은 그리 오랜 시간이 지나지 않아서였다. 처음에는 내가 언어의 장벽 때문에 수업도 제대로 듣지 못한다고 생각해서 노트를 빌려주는 등 친절을 베풀었지만, 나중에 정작 자기보다 내가 더 좋은 점수를 받았다는 사실을 알게 된 이후로는 태도가 바뀐 것이다. 이런저런 핑계를 대며 노트를 빌려주지 않는 게 아닌가? 그런데 이런 경험을 한국 유학생들이 공통으로 겪었다고 한다. 그들이 자비로웠던 것은 우리가 약해 보였을 때뿐이었다.
지금 미국은 이민자들을 축출해내고, 세계를 향해서 관세를 부과하는 등 이상한 행동을 하고 있다. 트럼프가 혼자 이상한 사람이어서 이런 일을 하는 게 아니라, 미국인들 대다수가 그것을 원하고 있다. 이것이 미친 행동인 이유는 결국 이민자를 추방하고 세계를 향해 관세를 매기는 것이 궁극적으로는 미국에 해가 되기 때문이다. 높은 관세는 결국 미국 수입업자가 내는 것이고, 관세는 물가 인상으로 바로 연결되니, 그렇지 않아도 빡빡한 경제 상황이 더 나빠지는 것은 불 보듯 뻔하다. 사실 수입은 자국에 불리한 게 아니다. 적은 돈으로 좋은 물품을 들여오는 것은 경제에 플러스 요인이다. 경제 활동의 기초는 적은 비용으로 좋은 물품을 구매하는 것이기 때문이다. 그런데 지금 미국이 관세를 부과하는 행동은 일부러 비싼 대가를 지불하여 물건을 구매하기로 작정한 것과 다름이 없다. 이것은 어리석은 일이다. 제정신이라면 이런 일을 할 사람은 없는데, 국가적으로 미친 짓을 하는 셈이다. 결국 비싼 수입가 때문에 자국에서 만드는 상품이 비싸져서 해외에 수출하는 것도 어려워질 것이다. 장사의 기본은 싼값으로 다른 회사와 경쟁하는 것인데, 미국이 관세를 부과하는 행동은 일부러 자국의 제품 가격을 올려서 비싸게 매겨놓고 사달라고 하는 짓과 다름이 없다.
이민자 축출도 마찬가지이다. 지금까지 미국 경제는 이민자들의 비중이 컸다. 그들이 있었기에 산업 전반에 인력을 충분히 공급받을 수 있었다. 하지만 미국이 이민자를 추방하는 행동은 결국 인력을 대폭 감소시켜 인력난을 부추기는 결과를 가져올 것이다. 결국 회사로서는 더 많은 비용을 지불해야 해서, 모든 서비스와 재화의 가격을 올리게 만든다. 결국 이민자 추방은 더 비싼 금액의 서비스와 재화를 사용하겠다는 결정이나 다름없다. 어리석고 미친 짓이 아닐 수 없다.
나는 이런 미친 짓은 미국인들이 흔히 가지고 있는 시기와 질투심이 동기일 것이라고 추측한다. 이민자들이 미국에 들어와서 옛날 흑인 노예들이 하던 일과 비슷한 일을 할 때에는 이민자에 대한 반감이 없었다. 하지만 그들이 미국 주류 사회로 편입하기 시작했다. 이민자들이, 그리고 그들의 2세들이 미국의 주류 사회에 진입하고 아이비리그(Ivy League) 대학에 진학하면서, 상대적으로 자기 것을 빼앗겼다는 박탈감은 이민자에 대한 증오로 표현되기 시작한 것이다. 그 옛날 한없이 너그러웠던 미국인 학생이 내 성적을 보고 노트를 더 이상 빌려주지 않기로 했던 것처럼 말이다. 하지만 그렇게 해서 그들의 목적은 달성되지 않는다. 여전히 주류 사회에 진입한 이민자들은 잘나가는 반면, 미국 경제의 가장 밑바닥에서 경제를 받쳐주었던 이민자들만이 추방당하기 때문이다. 관세로 다른 나라를 괴롭게 하면 미국의 경제가 나아지는 것이 아니라, 오히려 부메랑이 되어 더 큰 어려움을 당하게 되기 때문이다.
물론 미국의 리더십 그룹은 그것을 잘 안다. 하지만 그런 정책을 포기하지 않는다. 왜냐하면 시기와 질투와 증오심으로 가득 찬 우매한 대중은 철저하게 자신들의 정치적 목적을 달성하는 데 도움이 되기 때문이다. 종교화된 정치가 이민자와 다른 나라에 대한 증오심으로 무장하면 그 파워는 강력하다. 자신들이 정권을 유지하는 데 큰 도움이 되기 때문이다. 또한 국가 경제가 망가져도 상위 1%에 속한 자신들의 이익은 오히려 증대되기 때문이다. 사실 그들은 미국 국민 대다수를 최악의 상태로 몰아넣으면서도 그들을 위한다는 허황된 환상을 심는 데 성공한 셈이다.
그 목적을 위해 자극적인 이야기를 동원한다. 이민자들에 의해 불법이 저질러지고 있고 살인이 일어나고 있다고 자극한다. 하지만 통계를 보면 이민자의 살인 및 강력 범죄 비율이 미국 태생의 비율보다 낮다. 그럼에도 불구하고 정치적 목적을 위해 이민자들에게 뒤집어씌우는 것이다. 문제는 일반 시민들의 삶은 결국 더 나빠질 수밖에 없다는 점이다. 정치는 그 자체로는 좋은 것이지만, 우상화된 정치는 결국 우리를 망하게 만든다.
미국에서 일어나는 일은 이제 한국에서도 얼마 뒤에 나타날 수 있다. 우리나라에도 많은 이민자가 몰려들고 있다. 잘사는 나라에 먹을 것이 많고 일할 수요도 늘어나기 때문에 당연한 현상이다. 그런데 이들이 점점 주류 사회로 편입하기 시작하면서 배 아픈 사람들이 생겨날 수 있다. 나는 죽었다 깨어나도 국회의원을 할 수 없는데, 이민자 출신이라는 이유로 비례대표 국회의원이 되는 것을 보면서 증오심이 불타오를 수 있다. 그리고 미래에 대한 비전과 건강한 대한민국을 만드는 것이 목표가 아니라 그저 정치 권력을 탐하는 정치인들은 그러한 국민들의 시기와 질투를 정치적 동력으로 삼을 수 있다. 이민자들에 대한 증오심을 부추기고 정치적 목적을 달성하고자 할 것이다. 우리는 그들의 선동에 속지 말아야 한다.
세계 각국에서 우리나라에 들어와 비즈니스를 하고 돈을 벌어가는 것이 우리에게 나쁜 것이 아니다. 돈은 벌어가지만 우리에게 좋은 서비스와 재화를 제공하기 때문이다. 그걸 통해 우리는 더 좋은 경제 활동을 할 수 있기 때문이다. 이민자들이 들어와 취업하는 것이 우리에게 나쁜 것이 아니다. 우리나라의 경제가 잘 돌아가게 우리가 채울 수 없는 인력을 대신 공급해 주는 것이기 때문이다. 물론 부작용이 없을 순 없다. 이 세상의 모든 좋은 것에는 부작용이 있듯이 말이다. 하지만 거시적으로 보아야 한다. 결국 세계와 단절을 꾀하면 고립되어 망할 것이고, 기브 앤 테이크(give and take)의 정신으로 줄 것은 주고 얻을 것은 얻는 게 현명하다.
성경은 우리에게 가르친다. “너는 이방 나그네를 압제하지 말며 그들을 학대하지 말라 너희도 애굽 땅에서 나그네였음이라 너는 과부나 고아를 해롭게 하지 말라 네가 만일 그들을 해롭게 하므로 그들이 내게 부르짖으면 내가 반드시 그 부르짖음을 들으리라”(출 22:21-23). 정치적 목적으로 사용하기 위해 신앙인인 것처럼 행동하는 자들에게 속지 말아야 한다. 참된 신앙인은 하나님의 마음이 무엇인가를 성경을 통해 들어야 한다.
Envy and Jealousy Among Americans
When I first went to the United States, all Americans seemed like angels. Seeing people who were warm, loving, and considerate, I thought there was much to learn from them. I even wondered if this was because the nation was built upon Christian values. However, it did not take long before I saw Americans turn cold. At first, they showed kindness—such as lending me their notes—because they thought I couldn’t even follow the lectures due to the language barrier. But once they realized I actually received better grades than they did, their attitude changed. They began making all sorts of excuses to stop lending me their notes. I later found that this was a common experience among many Korean international students. Their “mercy” lasted only as long as we appeared weak.
Currently, the United States is engaging in strange behaviors, such as deporting immigrants and imposing tariffs on the rest of the world. This is not happening simply because Trump is a peculiar individual; rather, it is what the majority of Americans want. The reason this behavior is irrational is that, ultimately, deporting immigrants and imposing global tariffs will harm the United States. High tariffs are ultimately paid by U.S. importers, and since tariffs lead directly to price increases, it is clear as day that an already tight economic situation will only worsen. In fact, importing is not disadvantageous to a country. Bringing in high-quality goods at a low cost is a plus for the economy, as the foundation of economic activity is purchasing quality goods with minimal expense. However, the current American move toward tariffs is no different from a deliberate decision to pay a higher price for goods. This is foolish. No person in their right mind would do this, yet the nation is committing a collective act of folly. Eventually, high import costs will drive up the price of domestically manufactured goods, making it difficult to export them abroad. The fundamental rule of business is to compete with other companies through lower prices, but by imposing tariffs, the U.S. is essentially raising its own product prices and then asking the world to buy them.
The expulsion of immigrants is the same. Until now, immigrants have constituted a significant portion of the U.S. economy. Because of them, various industries were supplied with sufficient labor. However, the act of deporting immigrants will drastically reduce the workforce and aggravate labor shortages. Consequently, companies will have to pay higher costs, causing the prices of all services and goods to rise. In the end, deporting immigrants is a decision to pay more for services and goods. It is nothing short of foolish and irrational.
I suspect that the motivation behind this irrationality is the envy and jealousy commonly held by Americans. When immigrants first came to America to do work similar to what Black slaves used to do, there was no resentment toward them. However, they began to integrate into mainstream society. As immigrants and their second-generation children entered mainstream circles and gained admission to Ivy League universities, a sense of deprivation—the feeling that something was being taken away—began to express itself as hatred toward immigrants. It is just like the generous American student who decided to stop lending me notes after seeing my grades. But their goal will not be achieved this way. The immigrants who have already entered the mainstream will continue to succeed, while only those who supported the economy from the very bottom will be deported. Troubling other nations with tariffs will not improve the U.S. economy; instead, it will become a boomerang that brings even greater hardship.
Of course, the leadership groups in the U.S. know this well. Yet, they do not abandon these policies because an ignorant public filled with envy, jealousy, and hatred is highly useful for achieving their political goals. When “politicized religion” is armed with hatred toward immigrants and other nations, its power is formidable. It helps them maintain their grip on power. Furthermore, even if the national economy is ruined, the interests of the top 1% are often increased. In fact, they have succeeded in leading the majority of American citizens into the worst possible state while planting the hollow illusion that they are acting for their benefit.
To achieve this, they employ provocative narratives. They incite people by claiming that illegal acts and murders are being committed by immigrants. However, statistics show that the rate of murder and violent crime among immigrants is lower than that of native-born Americans. Despite this, they pin the blame on immigrants for political purposes. The problem is that the lives of ordinary citizens can only get worse. Politics, in itself, is a good thing, but “idolized politics” ultimately leads us to ruin.
What is happening in the U.S. may soon appear in Korea as well. Many immigrants are flocking to our country. This is a natural phenomenon, as prosperous countries have plenty to eat and an increasing demand for labor. However, as they begin to enter mainstream society, some people may become “belly-aching” (jealous). One might feel a fire of hatred seeing an immigrant become a proportional representative in the National Assembly when they themselves could never achieve such a feat. Politicians who seek political power rather than a vision for a healthy Korea may use this envy and jealousy as political fuel. They will incite hatred toward immigrants to achieve their ends. We must not be deceived by their agitation.
It is not a bad thing for people from all over the world to come to our country to do business and make money. Although they take money, they provide us with good services and goods, through which we can engage in better economic activity. It is not bad for immigrants to come and find employment here; they provide the labor that we cannot fill, keeping our economy running smoothly. Of course, there can be side effects, just as there are side effects to every good thing in this world. But we must look at the macro perspective. Ultimately, attempting to disconnect from the world leads to isolation and ruin. It is wise to give what must be given and gain what can be gained in the spirit of “give and take.”
The Bible teaches us: “You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry” (Exodus 22:21–23, ESV). We must not be deceived by those who act as if they are people of faith only to use it for political ends. A true person of faith must hear what the heart of God is through the Scriptures.
