하나님의 방법(왕상 17:8-16)

하나님의 사람 엘리야가 그릿 시냇가에 가서 여러 가지 어려움을 피하면서 연명했다고 하는 이야기를 살펴보았습니다. 그릿 시냇가에 흐르는 물을 마시고 까마귀가 가져다주는 빵과 고기를 먹으면서 지낼 수 있었는데, 거기서 지낼 수 있는 것이 영원히 한도 끝도 없이 지낼 수 있는 게 아니라 곧 그곳에서 더 이상 있을 수 없게 되었습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 비가 오지 않았기 때문에 그런 것이죠. 열왕기상 17장 7절 말씀에 보니까 “땅에 비가 내리지 아니하므로 얼마 후에 그 시내가 마르니라” 그렇게 기록하고 있습니다. 그릿 시내라고 하는 것이 우리나라 한강처럼 항상 물이 흐르고 있는 그런 곳이 아니라, 저 사막의 ‘와디’라고 하는 그런 시내죠.
그러니까 상류에 비가 내려서 물이 공급이 되면 그러면 거기에 물이 있지만, 비가 내리지 않으면 얼마 가지 못해서 다 말라버리는 그냥 일시적인 그런 개울물과 같은 곳이 그릿 시냇가였기 때문에, 엘리야 선지자가 그곳에 있는 동안에 잠시 동안에는 그 물을 마시며 있었지만 얼마 지나지 않아서 그 시내가 말라버렸기 때문에 더 이상 있을 수가 없게 된 것이죠. 그래서 하나님께서 엘리야 선지자에 게 다시 말씀하셨습니다. 열왕기상 17장 9절 말씀에 “너는 일어나 시돈에 속한 사르밧으로 가서 거기 머물라 내가 그 곳 과부에게 명령하여 네게 음식을 주게 하였느니라” 하나님께서 명령하시기를 시돈으로 가라. 시돈이 어디죠? 시돈이 어디냐면 이방 사람들이 사는 이방 지역입니다. 이스라엘 사람들이 사는 곳이 아닌 저 이방 땅으로 가라고 하나님께서 말씀하셨고요. 그러니까 그 시돈 땅에 사는 사르밧 출신의 과부는 이방인이었겠습니까, 유대인이었겠습니까?
이방인이었죠. 그 이방인 한 과부의 집으로 가라고 말씀하셔서 엘리야는 하나님의 말씀에 순종하여 그곳에 가게 되었다고 하는 내용, 그 전체적인 이야기가 오늘 본문에 기록되어 있습니다. 엘리야가 그곳에 가게 되었을 때, 엘리야가 만난 사람은 어떤 사람이었습니까? 하나님께서 이제 “그릿 시냇가를 떠나 저 시돈으로 가라, 거기서 한 여인을 만나라고 했을 때” 거기서 엘리야를 맞게 된 사람이 있었는데 그 사람이 누구죠? 재벌 갑부가 아니었습니다. 돈이 많고 먹을 것이 풍부한 가정으로 하나님께서 보내셨으면 좋았겠지만, 안타깝게도 어떤 사람이 그곳에 있었는가? 열왕기상 17장 12절 말씀에 그 여인이 이렇게 엘리야에게 대답하는 겁니다. “그가 이르되 당신의 하나님 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 나는 떡이 없고 다만 통에 가루 한 움큼과 병의 기름 조금뿐이라 내가 나뭇가지 둘을 주어다가 나와 내 아들을 위하여 음식을 만들어 먹고 그 후에는 죽으리라”
엘리야를 도와줄 수 있는 능력이 없어요. 엘리야에게 무엇인가를 제공해 줄 수 있는 아무것도 가지지 아니한 한 여인을 향해서 우리 하나님께서 엘리야 선지자를 보내주셨다고 하는 게 오늘 본문의 말씀입니다. 하나님께서 실수하신 걸까요? 왜 잘못 보내신 것일까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 하나님은 어떠한 하나님이신가? 하나님은 실수가 없으신 하나님이고, 하나님은 잘못된 것을 하시는 하나님이 아니라 하나님의 선하신 계획과 섭리 가운데 엘리야를 보내시는데 누구에게 보냈는가? 재벌 갑부에게로, 왕궁에게로 보낸 것이 아니라 정말 아무것도 없는, 그저 가루 한 움큼과 기름 조금, 땔감도 없어서 나뭇가지 주워다가 이제 먹고 이제는 끝났다, 우리의 인생이 더 이상 견딜 방법이 없다고 생각한 이 여인의 집으로 하나님께서는 엘리야 선지자를 보내주셨습니다. 그런데 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. 무슨 놀라운 일이 일어났습니까?
열왕기상 17장 14절의 말씀에 “이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 말씀이 나 여호와가 비를 지면에 내리는 날까지 그 통의 가루가 떨어지지 아니하고 그 병의 기름이 없어지지 아니하리라 하셨느니라” 하신 그 말씀대로 몇 년 동안이나 지속된 그 가뭄, 아무런 비가 내리지 않아서 온 세상 사람들이 고통을 받고 심지어 굶어 죽게 되는 그 심각한 기근 속에서 놀랍게도 이 과부와 그리고 이 엘리야 선지자는 하나님의 은총으로 살아나게 되었다고 하는 이야기가 오늘 본문의 이야기입니다. 오늘 우리가 이 이야기를 통해서 주목해 보아야 할 것이 있는데 그것은 무엇일까요? 그것은 “하나님께서는 왜 이 여인에게로 보내셨는가” 하는 거예요. 하나님께서는 엘리야 선지자를 보낼 때 아주 먹을 것이 풍부한 곳으로, 정말 아무런 걱정이 없는 그런 집으로 보내서 그곳에서 지내게 하신 것이 아니라 왜 정말 이 사람에게로 보내셨는가 하는 거예요. 사실 하나님은 무엇이든지 할 수 있기 때문에 보내지 않아도 됐었어요.
그릿 시냇가가 마르고 했지만 하나님이라고 한다면 반석에서 물을 내실 수도 있었고, 하나님이라고 한다면 다른 방법으로 물을 공급해 주실 수도 있었고, 까마귀를 통해 계속해서 빵과 고기를 계속해서 공급해 주실 수도 있었고… 하나님의 방법은 어떤 방법이든지 다 가능해요. 굳이 이 시돈 지역의 사르밧 과부에게로 하나님께서 보내지 않아도 하나님께서는 그릿 시냇가에서 해결할 수도 있었고, 하나님께서는 저 광야에서 해결할 수도 있었고, 하나님께서 그 어떤 곳이든지 모든 문제를 해결하실 수 있는 하나님이신데 왜 하나님께서는 이 사르밧 여인에게로 보내어 주셨는가 하는 것입니다. 그것은 이 사르밧 여인이, 과부가 대단한 능력의 사람이었기 때문이 아닙니다. 정반대죠. 이 과부는 능력이 없습니다. 이 당시의 과부와 고아는 살아가기가 정말 힘들다고 하는 것을 나타낼 때 사용하는 대표적인 그런 범주의 사람들이에요.
과부로서 생활이 궁핍한 여인이었습니다. 자기 문제도 해결할 수 없는 그런 여인이었습니다. 자기 문제도 해결할 수 없는 이 여인에게 하나님께서는 왜 엘리야 선지자를 먹이시기 위해서 보냈는가? 그 아무런 능력이 없는 자에게… 그것은 단 한 가지 이유뿐이죠. 그 단 한 가지 이유가 무엇입니까? 하나님께서는 엘리야도 사랑하셨을 뿐만 아니라 아무것도 갖지 못한 이 과부의 가정도 불쌍히 여기시고 먹이시길 원하셨기 때문입니다. 엘리야를 먹이시며, 저 이방 여인, 유대 민족이 아니라 그 당시 하나님의 선민에 들지 못한다고 생각되었던 저 이방의 한 여인도 하나님께서 불쌍히 여기셔서 그 여인을 먹여 살리시기 위해서 하나님께서 엘리야를 이 과부에게 보내어 주신 것입니다.
아합 왕에 대한 심판으로 인해서 온 세상이 고통을 받고 있을 때 이 여인도 함께 고난을 받게 되었고, 모든 사람들이 고통 가운데 있을 때 하나님께서는 누구를 눈여겨보셨는가? 그 당시에 고위 직분에 있는 그런 사람들을 바라보신 것이 아니라, 하나님께서는 어떤 영향력 있는 사람을 바라보신 것이 아니라, 저 이방의 하나님의 백성이 아니라고 하는 그 나약한 한 과부를 불쌍하게 보시고 그 과부를 먹여 살리시기 위해서 하나님께서는 엘리야 선지자를 보내어 주신 것입니다. 놀랍게도 사르밧 여인은 엘리야의 요청을 거부하지 않았어요. 그 남은 밀가루, 그 남은 기름이 무엇입니까? 그 남은 빵과 그 기름은 자기 자식 먹일 마지막 양식인데, 놀랍게도 엘리야에게 제공한 것이죠. 열왕기상 17장 13절의 말씀을 보니까 이렇게 말을 했습니다.
“엘리야가 그에게 이르되 두려워하지 말고 가서 네 말대로 하려니와 먼저 그것으로 나를 위하여 작은 떡 한 개를 만들어 내게로 가져오고 그 후에 너와 네 아들을 위하여 만들라”고 했을 때, 그 말을 곧이곧대로 듣고 “우리 자식 먹일 떡을 엘리야에게 줄 엄마”가 어디에 있겠습니까? 불가능해요. 그렇게 하기가 쉽지가 않아요. 그런데 놀랍게도 이 여인은 자기에게 남아 있는 그 마지막 밀가루로 엘리야 선지자에게 주었습니다. 왜 줬을까요? 이 여인에게 하나님에 대한 믿음이 있었기 때문일까요? 이 엘리야의 말이 확신이 가서 그랬을까요? 도대체 이 여인의 마음에 어떤 마음이 있었을까요? 우리는 잘 모릅니다. 성경에 그 여인의 마음의 상태를 기록하고 있지 않기 때문에 도대체 어떤 생각으로, 어떤 마음으로, 어떤 동기에서 이 사람에게 떡을 주었는지 우리는 모릅니다. 하지만 제가 예전에 영상을 하나 본 적이 있는데요.
미국에서 있었던 한 사회적 테스트, 사회적 실험을 하는 영상을 하나 본 적이 있습니다. 어떤 사람이 몰래카메라 같은 것을 가지고 찍으면서 사람들을 실험하는 그런 모습이었습니다. 그 사람은 우산에다가, 우산 안쪽에다가 수많은 지폐를 많이 집어넣었습니다. 100달러짜리도 넣고 20달러짜리도 넣고 해가지고 그 우산 안쪽에다가 많은 돈을 집어넣은 다음에, 그 우산을 접고 지나가는 사람들에게 우산을 파는 겁니다. 지나가는 사람한테 우산을 팔았어요. 그러면서 우산을 팔면서 이 사람이 하는 얘기가 “죄송합니다, 실례합니다. 제가 배고픈데 먹을 것이 없습니다. 제가 배고픕니다. 그래서 돈이 필요한데 저에게 남아 있는 것이 이 우산 하나뿐이거든요. 이 우산 좀 사주시겠습니까?”라고 실험하는 장면이에요. 이 실험을 하는데 지나가는 사람들이 그 우산을 좀 사달라고 하는 이야기를 들었을 때 지나가는 사람들이 어떤 반응을 보였을까요? 여러 사람들이 등장하는데 어떤 사람은 그냥 무시하고 지나가 버렸습니다.
어떤 사람은 밀쳐내면서 저리 꺼지라고 하면서 지나가 버렸고, 어떤 사람은 욕을 하면서 지나가 버렸어요. 많은 사람들이 “나 좀, 내가 배고파서 그런데 나에게 이 우산을 좀 사서 내가 그 돈으로 좀 먹을 걸 사 먹고 싶으니까 좀 해달라”고 부탁하는 것을 외면해 버리고 만 거죠. 그런데 어떤 젊은이가 지나가는데 그 젊은이에게 똑같이 이야기를 했어요. 그랬더니 그 젊은이가 지나가다가 그냥 아니라고 그렇게 못한다고 하는데, 또다시 이야기를 하니까 지나가던 그 청년이 주머니에서 3달러를 꺼냈어요. 얼마 되지도 않는 돈인데 그 3달러를 꺼내서 그 사람한테 주는 거예요. “이거 받으세요. 그리고 뭐라도 사서 드세요.” 그러니까 이 우산 실험을 하는 사람이 “여기 우산이 있습니다, 가져가세요” 그러니까 그 청년이 하는 얘기가 “괜찮아요. 그 우산 다른 사람한테 파세요.” 그 모습을 보고 실험하는 사람이 가려고 하는 사람을 붙들고 물었습니다. “잠깐만요, 잠깐만요.”
“저랑 얘기 좀 더 합시다. 저랑 좀 더 얘기 좀 합시다. 당신은 도대체 무슨 마음으로 내게 3달러를 주려고 했습니까? 왜 나에게 3달러를 주려고 했습니까?” 그랬더니 그 청년이 얘기를 하는 거예요. “사실 나도 뜨거운 뙤약볕 밑에서 서 있었던 적이 있었어요. 내가 먹을 것이 없어서… 나는 아버지 어머니 이혼해버리고 떠나버리고 나 혼자 남게 되어서 아무것도 없기 때문에 공사판을 돌아다니면서 일을 하고, 그렇게 일을 하다가 내 몸에 피부암도 걸리고, 그래서 내 몸을 지금 치료받아야 되는데 돈도 없고… 사실 이 3달러는 내가 가지고 있는 마지막 돈인데 당신을 주고 싶다고.”
그 모습을 보면서 참 많은 감동이 있었습니다. 왜 그랬을까 생각해 보니까, 그 사람은 그 사람의 배고픔을 같이 공감하는 거예요. 자신이 배고프니까 그 배고픈 마음으로 저 우산을 팔고 있는 사람을 향해서 따뜻한 손길을 내민 거죠. 결국 쭉 얘기하고 해가지고… 저는 이 사르밧 여인의 이야기를 읽으면서—이건 성경에 나오는 얘기 아니니까 성경의 이야기라고 생각하시면 안 되고 그냥 제가 추측하는 거예요—이 사르밧 여인이 이 엘리야를 바라보면서 “우리도 먹지 못하고 우리도 이렇게 힘들고 어려운 상황 가운데 있는” 이 여인의 마음에, 저 멀리서 온 이 엘리야의 그 배고픔을 공감하고 이해하고 그 사람을 위해서 자신이 가지고 있는 마지막 콩 한 조각을 나누어 주려고 했었던 것이 아닐까 싶습니다.
그런데 하나님께서는 왜 그 여인에게 엘리야를 보내셨는가? 그것은 바로 이 여인에게 은혜를 베풀기 위해서였던 것이고, 놀랍게도 이 여인은 자신에게 어느 날 갑자기 예고도 없이 찾아온 한 사람을 도와주라고 하는 하나님의 음성을 외면하지 않았습니다. 그 순간에 “내 코가 석 자인데 무슨 소리냐” 하면서 우리는 외면할 수 있었을 것 같아요. 하지만 이 여인은 그의 마음 가운데 하나님께서 주신 그 음성을 세밀하게 들은 거죠. 우리들의 마음 가운데는 양쪽에서 소리가 들립니다. 하나는 “아니야, 너 먹을 것도 없는데 너 먹고 네 아이들 주고 그냥 너희 집만 잘살면 된다”라고 하는 그런 소리가 하나가 들리는 것이고, 또 한쪽에서는 하나님의 세미한 음성이 들리는 겁니다. 그 사람에게 사랑의 손길을 내밀라고 하는 하나님의 음성이 들린 것이죠. 그런데 놀랍게도 이 여인은 이 순간에 하나님께서 자신에게 갑작스럽게 주시는 그 사명 앞에 아멘으로 화답하고 이 엘리야 선지자에게 마지막 떡을 나누어 주었습니다.
어쩌면 하나님께서는 저와 여러분들에게 똑같은 마음으로 우리를 부르고 계십니다. 하나님께서 우리를 지금도 불러주고 계세요. 그 상황이 어떠한 상황인지 몰라요. 우리가 지금 사르밧 여인과 같은 상황일 수도 있겠고 어떤 상황일지 모르지만, 하나님께서는 우리들을 불러주시는데 그 부르심이 어떤 부르심인가? 우리가 풍부하고 우리가 넘쳐나고 우리가 모든 걸 다 가진 상태에서 불러주시는 것이 아니라, 우리가 할 수 없을 것 같은 상황에서 하나님께서는 우리로 하여금 “네가 그것 좀 해주면 안 되겠니?”라고 말씀하시는 것, “네가 먹고 죽을 것 같은 그거, 그거 좀 나눠주면 안 되겠니?”라고 말씀해 주고 계시는 거예요.
그런데 이 세상엔 두 종류의 사람이 있는 겁니다. 한 종류의 사람은 지극히 이 세상의 가치가 우상인 사람이죠. 그래서 그 사람들은 오로지 자신의 안위와 자신의 평강만이 우상이 되어 버려서 피해버리고 마는 겁니다. 강도 만난 한 사람 앞에서 제사장은 하나님을 가까이한다고 하면서도 그 사람을 바라보면서 여러 가지 이유와 핑계를 대면서 그 자리를 지나치는 겁니다. 레위인도 그 자리를 지나쳐 버리고 만 겁니다. 하지만 또 한 사람 사마리아 사람은 하나님께서 자신에게 주신 것이 무엇인가, “내게 많은 것이 없지만 하나님께서 내게 주신 돈으로 치유하고 시간으로 돌보고 사랑으로 돌보며 강도 만난 자를 살리는 일을 하게 하셨는데” 사실은 그것이 무엇인가? 사실은 우리의 것을 빼앗아 버리려고 하는 것이 하나님의 계획이 아니라, 놀랍게도 그 일을 통해서 하나님께서는 이 사르밧 과부의 가정을 그 고통스러운 기근 속에서도 살려주시는 하나님의 은총을 무한히 받는 복의 통로가 된 줄로 믿습니다.
하나님께서는 놀랍게도 아무런 능력이 없는 자에게 그 일을 맡기셨어요. 사실 우리는 능력이 없다고 하는 것, 가진 게 없다고 하는 것이 핑계가 될 수는 없어요. 모세는 말하기를 “나는 입이 둔한 사람이라 나는 입이 뻣뻣하여 말할 수 없다”고 하는 그 모세에게 바로 왕 앞에 가서 말하도록 사명을 주셨고, 사르밧 여인에게 아무것도 가진 게 없고 “이제 마지막 밀가루, 마지막 기름이다”라고 한 그 여인에게 엘리야를 먹이라고 말씀해 주셨고, “보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리뿐이다”라고 하는 그 제자들에게 “너희가 먹을 것을 주라”고 말씀해 주셨는데, 그렇게 말씀하시는 이유가 무엇인가? 우리의 것을 빼앗기 위함이 아니라 사실은 풍성한 하나님의 은혜의 축복의 도구요 방법이라고 하는 사실을 기억해야 될 줄로 믿습니다. 고린도후서 8장 9절의 말씀에 “우리 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜를 너희가 알거니와 부요하신 이로서 너희를 위하여 가난하게 되심은 그의 가난함으로 말미암아 너희를 부요하게 하려 하심이라”
주면 내가 망하는 줄 알았는데 망한 게 아니었습니다. 열왕기상 17장 14절에서부터 16절의 말씀에 이렇게 기록합니다. “이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 말씀이 나 여호와가 비를 지면에 내리는 날까지 그 통의 가루가 떨어지지 아니하고 그 병의 기름이 없어지지 아니하리라 하셨느니라 그가 가서 엘리야의 말대로 하였더니 그와 엘리야와 그의 식구가 여러 날 먹었으나 여호와께서 엘리야를 통하여 하신 말씀 같이 통의 가루가 떨어지지 아니하고 병의 기름이 없어지지 아니하니라”
사랑하는 성도 여러분, 하나님은 우리들의 아버지와 같고 어머니와 같습니다. 우리에게 시키시는 일이 있다고 한다면 그것은 우리를 힘들게 하고 무너뜨리기 위한 것이 아니라, 마침내 부유하게 하시는 하나님의 선하신 손길이라고 하는 사실을 기억하면서 하나님의 음성에 귀를 기울이는 우리 모두가 다 될 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다. 요한계시록 3장 20절 말씀에 “볼지어다 내가 문 밖에 서서 두드리노니 누구든지 내 음성을 듣고 문을 열면 내가 그에게로 들어가 그와 더불어 먹고 그는 나와 더불어 먹으리라” 문을 잠가 두어 버릴 것이 아니라 주님께서 우리를 부르시는 그 부르심에 귀를 기울여야 합니다. 하나님께서 우리를 부르시는 그 부르심은 축복을 위한 부르심이요, 함께 먹고 마시고 즐거워하는 그 풍성한 잔치로의 부르심이기 때문에 그렇습니다. 왜 우리는 그 사명을 감당해야 합니까? 그것은 사실은 우리 주님께서 사르밧 여인처럼 자신의 모든 것을 우리 위해 내어주셨기 때문입니다.
엘리야에게 자신의 모든 것을 다 내어주었던 사르밧 과부처럼, 우리 주님께서는 자신의 몸을 내어주셔서 우리의 양식을 만들어 주셨고, 우리 주님께서는 피를 흘려주셔서 우리를 위해 우리의 영적인 갈증을 해결해 주셨기 때문에 우리는 주님의 부르심에 도망 다닐 것이 아니라 믿음으로 순종하며 하나님의 은혜의 그 길에 동참하는 귀하고 복된 결단들이 우리 모두에게 있을 수 있기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

The Empty Jar that Never Runs Dry: The Miracle of Zarephath
We have looked at the story of how Elijah, the man of God, went to the Brook Cherith to avoid various difficulties and managed to survive. He was able to get by drinking the water flowing in the Brook Cherith and eating the bread and meat brought by ravens, but staying there was not something that could last forever. Why was that? It was because it did not rain. As 1 Kings 17:7 records: “And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.” The Brook Cherith was not a place where water flows constantly like the Han River in Korea, but rather a “wadi” in the desert.
In other words, if rain falls upstream and water is supplied, then there is water; but if it doesn’t rain, it’s like a temporary stream that dries up before long. That was the Brook Cherith. Therefore, while the prophet Elijah stayed there and drank that water for a short while, he could no longer remain because the brook dried up after some time. So God spoke to the prophet Elijah again. 1 Kings 17:9 says: “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” God commanded him to go to Sidon. Where is Sidon? Sidon is a Gentile region where foreigners lived. God told him to go to that Gentile land, not where the Israelites lived. This means the widow from Zarephath living in that land of Sidon would have been a Gentile, not a Jew.
The overall story in today’s text is that God told him to go to the house of a Gentile widow, and Elijah obeyed God’s word and went there. When Elijah arrived, what kind of person did he meet? When God said, “Leave the Brook Cherith and go to Sidon to meet a woman,” the person who met Elijah was not a wealthy magnate. It would have been nice if God had sent him to a family with plenty of money and food, but unfortunately, what kind of person was there? In 1 Kings 17:12, the woman answers Elijah this way: “As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.”
She had no ability to help Elijah. Today’s text tells us that our God sent the prophet Elijah to a woman who had nothing to provide. Did God make a mistake? Did He send him to the wrong place? Not at all. What kind of God is He? God is a God who makes no mistakes, a God who does nothing wrong. Within His good plan and providence, He sent Elijah—not to a billionaire or a palace, but to a woman who thought her life could no longer endure, possessing only a handful of flour and a little oil, and picking up sticks because she didn’t even have firewood. However, a miraculous thing happened. What was this miracle?
In 1 Kings 17:14, it says: “For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’” Just as those words were spoken, even in that severe famine that lasted for years without any rain—where people all over the world suffered and even starved to death—this widow and the prophet Elijah remarkably survived through God’s grace. This is the story of today’s text. What should we pay attention to through this story? It is the question: “Why did God send him to this woman?” When God sent the prophet Elijah, why did He send him specifically to this person, instead of a place with abundant food or a house with no worries at all? In fact, since God can do anything, He didn’t even have to send him anywhere.
Although the Brook Cherith dried up, if He is God, He could have brought water out of a rock; if He is God, He could have supplied water through other methods; He could have continued to supply bread and meat through ravens. Any method is possible for God. He didn’t necessarily have to send him to the widow of Zarephath in the Sidon region; God could have solved it at the Brook Cherith, He could have solved it in the wilderness—God is the God who can solve all problems anywhere. Then why did He send him to this woman of Zarephath? It was not because this widow was a person of great ability. It was the exact opposite. This widow had no ability. In those days, widows and orphans were the representative categories of people used to describe how truly difficult it was to survive.
She was a woman destitute in her living as a widow. She was a woman who couldn’t even solve her own problems. Why did God send the prophet Elijah to be fed by this woman who couldn’t even solve her own problems? To one who had no power… there is only one reason. What is that one reason? It is because God loved not only Elijah but also had pity on the household of this widow who had nothing and wanted to feed them. God sent Elijah to this widow to feed not only Elijah but also that foreign woman—a woman who was thought not to belong to God’s chosen people at the time.
When the whole world was suffering due to the judgment on King Ahab, this woman was also suffering. When everyone was in pain, whom did God take notice of? At that time, God did not look at those in high positions, nor did He look at influential people. He looked with pity upon that weak widow—the one said not to be one of God’s people—and He sent the prophet Elijah to feed and sustain her. Remarkably, the woman of Zarephath did not refuse Elijah’s request. What were that remaining flour and oil? That remaining bread and oil were the last food to feed her child, but remarkably, she provided them to Elijah. In 1 Kings 17:13, it says:
“And Elijah said to her, ‘Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son.'” Upon hearing those words exactly as they were, what mother would give the cake meant for her child to Elijah? It is impossible. It is not easy to do that. Yet, remarkably, this woman gave the prophet Elijah the last bit of flour she had. Why did she give it? Was it because she had faith in God? Was it because she felt certain about Elijah’s words? What was truly in this woman’s heart? We do not know. Because the Bible does not record the state of the woman’s heart, we do not know with what thought, with what heart, or from what motive she gave him the cake. However, I once saw a video.
It was a video of a social test, a social experiment conducted in the United States. It showed a person filming with something like a hidden camera while experimenting on people. The person put many bills inside an umbrella—$100 bills, $20 bills—stuffing a lot of money inside the umbrella. Then, he folded the umbrella and tried to sell it to people passing by. While selling the umbrella, he would say: “I’m sorry, excuse me. I’m hungry and have nothing to eat. I am hungry. So I need money, and this umbrella is the only thing I have left. Would you please buy this umbrella?” In this scene, what was the reaction of the people passing by when they heard the request to buy the umbrella? Several people appear; some just ignored him and walked away.
Some pushed him away, telling him to get lost, and some cursed as they walked by. Many people turned away from the plea: “Please help me, I’m asking because I’m hungry. I want to sell this umbrella so I can buy something to eat with that money.” But when a certain young man passed by, he was told the same thing. At first, the young man said no, he couldn’t do that, but when he was asked again, he took $3 out of his pocket. It wasn’t much money, but he gave that $3 to the man and said, “Take this. And buy something to eat.” Then the person doing the umbrella experiment said, “Here is the umbrella, take it.” But the young man said, “It’s okay. Sell that umbrella to someone else.” Seeing this, the experimenter held onto the young man as he tried to leave and asked, “Wait, wait.”
“Let’s talk a bit more. Why in the world did you try to give me $3? Why did you want to give me $3?” Then the young man spoke: “Actually, I have stood under the hot sun too. Because I had nothing to eat… My father and mother divorced and left, and since I was left alone with nothing, I traveled around construction sites to work. While working like that, I got skin cancer, and so I need treatment now, but I have no money… Actually, this $3 is the last money I have, but I wanted to give it to you.”
Watching that was very moving. Thinking about why he did it, it’s because he empathized with that person’s hunger. Because he was hungry, he reached out with a warm hand toward the person selling the umbrella with that hungry heart. As I read this story of the woman of Zarephath—this isn’t in the Bible, so don’t think of it as a Bible story; it’s just my speculation—I wonder if this woman of Zarephath, looking at Elijah, felt: “We can’t eat either, and we are in such a difficult and painful situation.” Perhaps she empathized with and understood the hunger of Elijah, who had come from far away, and wanted to share the last piece of bean she had for him.
But why did God send Elijah to that woman? It was specifically to bestow grace upon her. Remarkably, she did not ignore the voice of God telling her to help a person who had suddenly come to her one day without notice. At that moment, we might have turned away, saying, “I’m in over my head; what are you talking about?” But this woman listened closely to that voice God gave her. In our hearts, sounds are heard from both sides. One says, “No, you don’t even have food; it’s enough for you to eat, give it to your children, and just have your own house live well.” On the other side, the still, small voice of God is heard. It is the voice of God telling her to reach out with a hand of love. Remarkably, at that moment, this woman responded with “Amen” to the mission God suddenly gave her and shared her last cake with the prophet Elijah.
Perhaps God is calling you and me with the same heart. God is calling us even now. We do not know what kind of situation it is. We might be in a situation like the woman of Zarephath, or it could be something else, but God is calling us. What kind of calling is it? It is not a calling when we are abundant, overflowing, and possess everything. In a situation where it seems we cannot do it, God is saying to us, “Couldn’t you please do that for me?” He is saying, “That thing you think you’ll eat and then die—couldn’t you share that?”
However, there are two kinds of people in this world. One kind consists of those for whom the values of this world are an idol. Therefore, those people avoid others because only their own comfort and peace have become their idols. Standing before a man who fell among robbers, the priest—while claiming to be close to God—looks at the man but passes by using various reasons and excuses. The Levite also passed by. But there was another man, a Samaritan. What did he consider? “I don’t have much, but God has allowed me to use the money He gave me to heal, the time He gave me to care, and the love He gave me to save the one who fell among robbers.” What is that, actually? God’s plan is not to snatch away what is ours. Remarkably, I believe that through that work, God made her a channel of blessing who received infinite divine grace, which saved the widow of Zarephath’s household even in that painful famine.
God remarkably entrusted that work to one who had no ability. In fact, we cannot use the fact that we have no ability or nothing to our name as an excuse. To Moses, who said, “I am slow of speech and tongue,” God gave the mission to go and speak before Pharaoh. To the woman of Zarephath, who had nothing and said, “This is the last flour and the last oil,” God told her to feed Elijah. To the disciples who said, “We only have five barley loaves and two fish,” He told them, “You give them something to eat.” Why does He speak that way? We must remember that it is not to take away what is ours, but rather it is a tool and a method for God’s abundant blessing of grace. 2 Corinthians 8:9 says: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”
I thought if I gave, I would be ruined, but that was not the case. 1 Kings 17:14–16 records it this way: “For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’ And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah.”
Dear saints, God is like our father and our mother. If there is a task He asks of us, I pray in the name of the Lord that we may all listen to God’s voice, remembering that it is not to make things difficult or to break us down, but ultimately God’s good hand making us rich. Revelation 3:20 says: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” We must not keep the door locked, but listen to that calling with which the Lord calls us. This is because the calling with which God calls us is a calling for blessing and a calling to that abundant feast where we eat, drink, and rejoice together. Why must we fulfill that mission? It is because our Lord, like the woman of Zarephath, gave His everything for us.
Just as the widow of Zarephath gave her everything to Elijah, our Lord gave His body to provide our food, and our Lord shed His blood to quench our spiritual thirst. Therefore, I pray in the name of the Lord that all of us will not run away from the Lord’s calling but will have precious and blessed resolutions to obey in faith and participate in that path of God’s grace.
