이스라엘은 여전히 하나님의 선민인가?
중동 전쟁이 아직도 완전히 끝나지 않고 있다. 지구촌은 이미 복잡하게 얽혀 있어서, 저 멀리 대략 6~7천 km 밖에서 일어나는 일이 우리들의 일상에도 영향을 미친다. 몸의 일부가 아프면 몸 전체가 아프듯이 말이다. 이번 중동 전쟁이 끝나더라도 중동은 언제든 다시 전쟁에 휘둘릴 수 있는 화약고이다. 이럴 때마다 우리들에게 떠오르는 질문이 있다. 이스라엘은 여전히 하나님의 선민(선택된 민족)인가라는 질문이다.
답부터 말하면, 지금의 이스라엘은 하나님의 선민이 아니다. 성경은 이렇게 선언한다. 혈통적으로 유대인(표면적 유대인)이라고 해서 “하나님께서 선택한” 민족이 아니라, 오직 하나님을 진실로 믿는 사람(이면적 유대인)이 진짜 하나님께서 선택한 민족이라고(롬 2:28-29). 세례요한은 이렇게 선포했다. 너희는 아브라함의 혈통적 후손이니 당연히 하나님의 백성이라고 착각하지 말라. 왜냐하면 하나님께서는 돌들로도 하나님의 백성을 세우실 수 있기 때문이다(마 3:9).
하지만 오랜 기간 동안 자신들이 하나님의 선민이라고 생각했던 유대인들은 그 사실을 받아들이기 어려웠다. 하나님의 약속이 유대 민족에게 이루어지는 것을 경험했던 사람들이었기 때문이다. 출애굽을 통해, 바벨론에서 다시 돌아오는 경험을 통해 하나님의 약속이 자신들에게 이루어지는 것을 경험했던 유대인들은 자신들이 선민이며, 이방 민족은 자신들의 무릎 앞에 굴복해야 하는 것이라고 생각해 왔다. 예수님께서 하나님께서 아브라함과 다윗에게 하셨던 약속을 이루기 위해 이 세상에 오셨을 때, 그들은 다시 이스라엘 나라가 로마 정부로부터 해방되는 것을 기대했다. 그래서 제자들은 언제나 이스라엘이 다시 회복될 때가 지금인지를 물었다. 오병이어의 기적을 보자, 예수님께서 제2의 모세로서 다시 이스라엘을 구원할 것으로 기대하고 왕으로 세우려고 했었다.
하지만 예수님은 다른 대답을 하셨다. 자신을 세상의 왕으로 세우고자 하는 군중들을 피하셨다. 예수님께서 회복시킬 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니라고 하셨다(요 18:36).
사실 우리의 문제는 정치적인 것이 아니었다. 영적인 것이 문제였다. 사탄이 우리를 죄의 포로로 삼고 노예처럼 장악하고 있다는 것이 문제의 본질이었다. 애굽이나 바벨론은 그런 영적인 우리의 상태를 보여주려는 것이었다. 예수님께서는 무력을 사용하여 이 세상의 나라들을 정복하려 하지 않으셨다(마 26:52-54). 큰 소리로 떠들지도 않으셨다(마 12:19). 아무런 힘도 없이 나약하게 죽임을 당하는 것 같았다. 하지만 십자가의 죽음과 부활로써 사탄을 무너뜨리셨다(히 2:14).
그래서 하나님의 선민은 혈통적, 민족적, 국가적인 것이 아니라 영적인 것이다. 예수 그리스도를 믿는 자가 하나님의 자녀로 입양되었고, 하나님의 선민으로 생각되던 유대인들은 잘려 나갔다(롬 11:17-21). 그래서 예수 그리스도를 믿는 우리가 하나님의 선택된 민족이지, 혈통을 물려받았을 뿐 하나님의 자녀의 삶을 살지 않는 자들이 하나님의 선민일 수 없다. 예수님은 말씀하셨다. 평화를 만드는 자(peacemakers)가 하나님의 자녀로 불릴 것이라고(마 5:9).
물론 혈통적 유대인들을 하나님께서 완전히 버리신 것은 아니다. 그 가운데도 예수 그리스도를 영접하는 하나님의 참된 백성들이 있을 수 있다. 하나님은 여전히 하나님을 찾는 자들에게 열려 있기 때문이다. 아랍인이든, 유대인이든, 인도 사람이든, 백인이든, 흑인이든, 남자든, 여자든, 어른이든, 아이든, 누구든지 예수 그리스도를 믿는 자들을 환영하신다.
중동에서의 전쟁, 그것은 그냥 국가들의 생존 전략에 따라 일어나는 것이다. 성경의 종말 예언과는 아무런 관계가 없다. 성경은 영적인 문제를 이야기하는데, 정치적 예언으로 오해해선 안 된다. 예수님께서 빵을 만들어 먹이시고, 수가 성 여인에게 물을 말씀하셨는데, 사실 빵의 문제와 물의 문제가 아닌 영적인 것을 의미하셨던 것처럼 말이다. 지금의 국가 이스라엘은 성경에서 말하는 하나님의 선택된 민족이 아니다. 종종 성경을 인용하면서 국가 이스라엘을 미화하는 일이 일어나는데, 그것은 그 옛날 예수님의 말씀을 오해했던 제자들처럼 어리석은 일일 뿐이다.
Is Modern Israel Still God’s Chosen People?: The True Identity of the Chosen People
The war in the Middle East has yet to reach a complete end. Our global village is already intricately intertwined, such that events occurring 6,000 to 7,000 kilometers away affect our daily lives. Just as when one part of the body hurts, the entire body suffers. Even if this current Middle East war ends, the region remains a powderkeg that can be swept into war at any time. Whenever this happens, a question arises in our minds: Is Israel still God’s chosen people (the elect nation)?
To give the answer first: the modern state of Israel is not God’s chosen people. The Bible declares this: one is not a member of the “God-chosen” nation simply because they are a Jew by lineage (an outward Jew); rather, a person who truly believes in God (an inward Jew) is the true chosen people of God (Romans 2:28-29). John the Baptist proclaimed this: Do not mistakenly think that because you are physical descendants of Abraham, you are naturally God’s people. For God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham (Matthew 3:9).
However, for the Jews, who had considered themselves God’s chosen people for a long period, this fact was difficult to accept. This was because they were a people who had experienced God’s promises being fulfilled within the Jewish nation. Through the Exodus and the experience of returning from Babylon, the Jews saw God’s promises fulfilled for them. Consequently, they believed they were the chosen ones and that the Gentile nations should bow before their knees. When Jesus came into this world to fulfill the promises God made to Abraham and David, they expected Israel to be liberated from the Roman government once again. Thus, the disciples always asked if “now” was the time when Israel would be restored. Upon seeing the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, they expected Jesus to save Israel as a “second Moses” and tried to establish Him as king.
But Jesus gave a different answer. He withdrew from the crowds who sought to make Him a worldly king. He stated that the kingdom He would restore does not belong to this world (John 18:36).
In truth, our problem was not political. The problem was spiritual. The essence of the issue was that Satan had taken us captive to sin and was dominating us like slaves. Egypt and Babylon were intended to illustrate this spiritual state of ours. Jesus did not seek to conquer the nations of this world using force (Matthew 26:52-54). He did not cry aloud or lift up His voice (Matthew 12:19). It seemed as though He was being killed weakly and without power. However, through His death on the cross and His resurrection, He destroyed Satan (Hebrews 2:14).
Therefore, being God’s chosen people is not a matter of lineage, ethnicity, or nationality; it is spiritual. Those who believe in Jesus Christ have been adopted as God’s children, while the Jews, who were considered God’s chosen people, were broken off (Romans 11:17-21). Thus, we who believe in Jesus Christ are the chosen nation of God; those who have merely inherited a bloodline but do not live the life of a child of God cannot be His chosen people. Jesus said that the peacemakers would be called sons of God (Matthew 5:9).
Of course, this does not mean God has completely abandoned ethnic Jews. Among them, there can be true people of God who receive Jesus Christ. This is because God is still open to those who seek Him. Whether Arab or Jew, Indian or White, Black, man or woman, adult or child—He welcomes anyone who believes in Jesus Christ.
The war in the Middle East is simply happening according to the survival strategies of nations. It has no relationship with the end-times prophecies of the Bible. The Bible speaks of spiritual matters, and we must not misunderstand them as political prophecies. Just as Jesus fed the people with bread and spoke of water to the Samaritan woman—but actually meant spiritual things rather than issues of physical bread and water—the current nation of Israel is not the “chosen people of God” spoken of in the Bible. Often, the nation of Israel is glorified through the citation of scripture; however, this is merely as foolish as the disciples of old who misunderstood the words of Jesus.
