A mother killed her newborn son by drowning him in a bathtub. At the time, I was serving as a military chaplain and heard this news on the radio while driving to my unit. Why on earth would anyone commit such a horrific act? As it turned out, the woman was suffering from a mental illness. She told the police that she was simply obeying the Bible&#8217;s command to offer her son to God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know better. We understand that God\u2019s command to Abraham to offer Isaac as a burnt offering was a personal command given specifically to Abraham; it was never intended to be followed literally by everyone. This word becomes valid for us only when it reaches us in a secondary, spiritual sense\u2014that we must not hold anything more precious than God. Similarly, although God commanded Abraham to leave his father\u2019s house, children who read this today should not attempt to run away from home, because that was a personal command given to Abraham in his specific context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, however, the Bible contains universal commandments that are eternal, unchanging, and must be followed by everyone in any situation. The Ten Commandments are a prime example. The message to love God and love your neighbor is exactly that. Commands to &#8220;rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances&#8221; must be followed regardless of the situation. We cannot dismiss them by saying they were only for the people of the Exodus, or the twelve disciples, or the Thessalonians, and thus have no direct relevance to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem lies in the fact that these different types of words are interspersed throughout the Bible. Distinguishing between them is the key to interpreting Scripture correctly. Failure to make this distinction can lead to tragedies, such as a person drowning their son in a bathtub under the delusion that it is God\u2019s will. Of course, such extreme cases usually involve mental instability. Yet, even if not to that degree, misunderstandings of God\u2019s will occur frequently. Sometimes, the Word of God is even exploited for wrong purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Satan approached Jesus, he presented the exact words of God. He told Jesus to jump, citing Scripture that says God will protect Him from injury. However, that passage from the Psalms does not mean God will protect us when we intentionally test Him by creating dangerous situations. It means He will protect us in the dangers we face while living in obedience to His will. It is an encouragement to live a life of obedience without fear. Satan, however, tried to deceive by applying God\u2019s Word to the wrong context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why Jesus never spoke God\u2019s Word without considering the context. To the tax collector who bowed in repentance, He proclaimed God\u2019s forgiveness and salvation; but to the hard-hearted Pharisees, He spoke words of rebuke, warning them of coming woe. While &#8220;God\u2019s forgiveness and love&#8221; is an absolute truth, a whip was the correct answer for those defiling the Temple\u2014it was not the time to speak of forgiveness and love. Jesus distinguished the context with perfect accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bible is 100% the Word of God, yet it was given to specific people in specific circumstances. This is especially true of the Epistles. The request to &#8220;come before winter&#8221; was a personal plea from Paul to Timothy. Paul wanted the cloak he left at Carpus&#8217;s house in Troas and his scrolls (the parchments) for his personal use against the cold of the prison. We can extract spiritual meaning for ourselves from this message, but that is a secondary application; it is not a literal command given to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difficulty arises when it is not easy to discern whether a message is an eternal, unchanging truth for all situations or a specific message for a particular time. How do we discern this? The Reformers gave us the principle of <em>Tota Scriptura<\/em>\u2014&#8221;All of Scripture.&#8221; This principle dictates that we should not rely on isolated verses but must look at the teaching of the entire Bible before drawing a conclusion. This isn&#8217;t merely a matter of counting which message appears more often; rather, we must derive the overall message from a redemptive-historical perspective. The doctrine of Justification by Faith\u2014that we are saved not by works but by God&#8217;s grace through faith\u2014emerged from this very principle. If you simply count verses, there are far more passages stating that blessings follow obedience and disasters follow disobedience, including Jesus\u2019 own words that only those who do the will of the Father will enter heaven. Numerically, those verses outnumber others. Yet, when we understand the whole of Scripture through a redemptive-historical lens, we conclude that our salvation is entirely by God\u2019s grace, enjoyed through faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let us seek to understand 1 Timothy 2:11-15: &#8220;A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was dece<sup><\/sup>ived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing\u2014if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.&#8221;<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, 1 Timothy is a letter written by Paul to Timothy, who was serving the church in Ephesus. Naturally, this letter contains pastoral counsel necessary for Timothy\u2019s specific situation. At that time, the Ephesian church was in danger from false teachings that distorted the Gospel by focusing on myths, endless genealogies, and meaningless talk. Ephesus was a region that worshipped the goddess Artemis, and in these pagan rituals, priestesses played a leading role. These pre-conversion habits had naturally seeped into the Ephesian church, and it was in this context that the Apostle Paul advised Timothy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives&#8217; tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.&#8221; This was a message given because people, influenced by the idolatrous religions of Ephesus, were preoccupied with such things. &#8220;But godliness with contentment is great gain.&#8221; This was a warning to believers who had been steeped in the prosperity and materialism associated with the worship of Artemis. While these messages were primarily for the situation in Ephesus, they certainly remain valid for us today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what about the message that women are not permitted to teach? Is this also an eternal, unchanging command? Not necessarily. First, because Priscilla taught Apollos in Ephesus (Acts 18:24-26). Priscilla\u2019s name is mentioned before her husband Aquila\u2019s, likely because her role was more prominent and proactive. If the husband\u2019s role had been the primary one, the wife\u2019s name might not have been mentioned at all. Second, in his letter to the Corinthian church, Paul permitted women to prophesy as long as they wore a head covering (1 Corinthians 11:5-6). In the early church, &#8220;prophesying&#8221; referred to sharing insights gained from God&#8217;s Word. Thus, women were encouraged to share the Word of God, provided they wore a head covering. Third, the prophet Joel spoke of God pouring out His Spirit on both men and women in the last days so they would prophesy, and Peter taught that this was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. Fourth, the overall teaching of the Bible emphasizes <em>what<\/em> message is being delivered far more than <em>who<\/em> is delivering it. This is why Naaman listened to the servant girl and his own subordinates. God delivered a message to Balaam through the mouth of a donkey. He spoke to the priest Eli through the mouth of the child Samuel. Conversely, Peter did not listen to the priests, despite their legal standing, and Paul taught that even if an angel brings a different gospel, they should be under a curse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then why did Paul tell Timothy that he does not permit a woman to teach or assume authority over a man? To understand this, we must understand the situation of the church in Ephesus. A quote taken out of context can sometimes become a deadly poison. At that time, women were less educated and many had been deceived by false teachings (2 Timothy 3:6-7). Furthermore, they had not yet discarded the habits from the worship of Artemis, where women acted dominantly. As a result, there was a danger that the faith would drift in a wrong direction, mired in endless genealogies and myths. In that specific situation, Paul directed: &#8220;I do not currently permit the women in the Ephesian church to teach. I do not permit them to act dominantly.&#8221; Should we apply this specific counsel to all churches regardless of context?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus said to His disciples: &#8220;Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts\u2014no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals.&#8221; Since these are the words of Jesus, are they commands we must follow today? Remarkably, no one follows these literally now. We preach the Gospel to non-Jews and actively raise funds for missionary activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are reasons why 1 Timothy 2 does not necessarily need to be applied to us today. Today, women are more educated and well-trained in sound theology. Look at Chongshin Seminary; most of the top-performing students are women. Who would be pleased by preventing them from preaching the Gospel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in giving this command, Paul added two points: that Adam was formed first, and that the woman was the one deceived by Satan. This gives the nuance that a woman teaching breaks the created order, and since the woman&#8217;s assertiveness led to the Fall, she must never be allowed to teach. But was that really his intention? Considering everything discussed above, such a conclusion does not fit. Then why is Paul bringing this up? Here is my understanding of his logic. We can unpack Paul\u2019s letter in 1 Timothy 2:11-15 like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;(I want to tell the women in the Ephesian church to be quiet right now. This is not the time for you to be teaching others. You are causing problems here and there, even during the meetings. So, now is not the time to teach.) A woman should learn in quietness and full submission\u2014(until she has properly learned sound doctrine). I do not permit a woman to teach. Nor should she assume authority over a man. (You must not bring pagan habits into the church. We must all be humble and low. That is the Lord&#8217;s teaching. Didn&#8217;t Jesus say we have only one Teacher? Didn&#8217;t the Apostle James say not to many of you should become teachers?) You must remain quiet. (It is not about striving to be a teacher. Why should the women of Ephesus not step forward recklessly? Let me remind you of a story from Scripture.) Adam was created first, and then Eve was made. (I am referring to the story in Genesis 2. Eve was created because it was not good for Adam to be alone; she was made to bring benefit through companionship. But instead of benefit, a problem arose.) It wasn&#8217;t that Adam was the one deceived; Eve was deceived first (by Satan). As a result, both fell into sin. (A similar situation is threatening to occur in the Ephesian church\u2014in fact, it is already happening. Just as everyone fell because of Eve long ago, there is a danger that women in the Ephesian church, who lack spiritual discernment, might lead the whole church into corruption. Therefore, in this current situation, you must remain quiet until you are properly trained. If you are well-trained) and continue in faith, love, and holiness with propriety\u2014undergoing that (spiritual) process of &#8216;childbearing&#8217;\u2014you will ultimately enter (fully) into salvation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul did not cite the fact that man was created first as the <em>reason<\/em> for silence; he was simply reminding them of Genesis. Bringing up the story of Eve does not mean all women do evil; it was merely an example of a negative instance from the past. To prevent such a situation from recurring, it is necessary to &#8220;not be deceived by false teaching and to listen to sound doctrine.&#8221; One should not conclude that only men are permitted to teach forever. Such a conclusion would be like saying it is better never to marry just because many people suffer through marital strife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, it is possible to interpret 1 Timothy 2:11-15 not as a message for the specific situation in Ephesus, but as a permanent law of God. Therefore, we must choose between these two interpretations: either this verse was a command given for that specific situation to prevent false teaching, or it is an eternal, unchanging regulation that every church in every generation must follow. I believe the former is a more valid interpretation because the latter presents many difficult dilemmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we must interpret it the latter way, we should immediately stop our current practices and repent. Just as people in the past had to divorce foreign wives even if it was uncomfortable, we would have to stop all women\u2019s ministry activities immediately. Not only would female candidates for the ministry be prohibited, but so would female evangelists, Sunday school teachers, small group leaders, and discipleship training. Everything would have to stop. Furthermore, we would need to provide a convincing explanation for why God established Deborah and Huldah as leaders.
