look at the second of the Ten Commandments together. As I mentioned last time, the Catholic Church does not separate the first and second commandments but views them as a single commandment. The reason they group them together is that the two do not appear distinct, but rather seem to repeat the same content. In some ways, that view is reasonable and not necessarily a bad thing. However, we will look at the second commandment\u2014<strong>&#8220;Do not make idols&#8221;<\/strong>\u2014according to the tradition used by most Protestant denominations. While the first and second commandments may seem identical, we can see that their points of emphasis are actually different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the first commandment emphasizes &#8220;Worship only God&#8221; and &#8220;You must have no other gods&#8221;\u2014focusing on the exclusive, unique, and absolute worship of God alone\u2014the second commandment carries a slightly different emphasis: do not turn that God into an idol or an image. In other words, one might think the command not to make idols is already included in the command to worship only God and not idols. However, the second commandment goes beyond simple idol worship; it prohibits us from taking the God we claim to serve and\u2014while wondering &#8220;What is God like?&#8221;\u2014fashioning His likeness into some earthly image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To explain this more clearly, I think the events of Exodus 32 make it much easier to understand. In Exodus 32, while Moses was up on Mount Sinai meeting with God, his whereabouts became unknown to the people. Growing weary and frustrated from waiting, the Israelites went to Aaron and said, &#8220;We don&#8217;t know what happened to Moses. Do not leave us wandering; make an idol for us.&#8221; Aaron took the gold jewelry from the people and fashioned a golden calf. The Israelites then bowed before it, offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and held a festival. When God saw this, He was filled with wrath toward the Israelites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at Exodus 32, it is easy to think the Israelites\u2019 sin was abandoning Jehovah God to serve a &#8220;different god&#8221; like a calf idol. However, if you look closely at the text, the Israelites weren&#8217;t trying to abandon Jehovah. Rather, they wanted to worship Him, but since He was invisible, they decided to &#8220;make&#8221; Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at Exodus 32:4\u20136:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p id=\"p-rc_2b082be65c1e599e-22\">&#8220;And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. Then they said, &#8216;This is your god, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!&#8217; So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, &#8216;Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.&#8217; Then they rose early the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose<sup><\/sup> up to play.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This passage shows that their sin wasn&#8217;t necessarily choosing a new Egyptian god over Jehovah. Their thought process was quite simple: &#8220;We need to worship Jehovah, but we can&#8217;t see Him, so we don&#8217;t know what He looks like. Let&#8217;s make Him. Show us the God who led us out of Egypt.&#8221; When the calf was presented and they were told, &#8220;This is the God who led you out of Egypt; worship Him,&#8221; they treated it as a festival to the Lord and worshipped the idol as a way of serving God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Israelites didn&#8217;t say they couldn&#8217;t believe in or follow Jehovah. They actually had hearts of gratitude toward Him. They remembered Him as the God who led them out of Egypt and through the Red Sea. Out of that gratitude, they gave up their possessions to make an image, saying, &#8220;Let us worship and praise Jehovah.&#8221; Aaron even proclaimed the next day as a &#8220;feast to the Lord.&#8221; Their error was worshipping and bowing before a calf as a means of serving God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second commandment in Exodus 20, <strong>&#8220;You shall not make for yourself a carved image&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong>, is therefore on a different level than the first commandment. It means we must not fashion an image of God even while claiming to serve Him. While it forbids worshipping foreign idols, it specifically prohibits taking the Jehovah we serve and making Him into an image of anything in heaven, on earth, or in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This commandment has occasionally caused issues within the church. Some traditions, in their sincere desire to keep the second commandment, have argued historically that we should never draw God or Jesus\u2014even in Sunday School materials\u2014because doing so violates this command. They strongly forbade statues, crucifixes, or paintings like &#8220;The Last Supper&#8221; or the &#8220;Passion of the Christ,&#8221; arguing these acts break the second commandment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This tendency to keep the Ten Commandments in such a legalistic way has occurred frequently in church history. It is similar to how the ancient Pharisees created detailed rules for the Sabbath, such as how many meters one could walk or how many kilograms constituted &#8220;work.&#8221; We should strive to properly understand the spirit of the law\u2014what it truly requires of us\u2014so that we may receive the spiritual lessons needed to serve God correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why, then, does God forbid representing Him through images? The reason is that making an image <strong>diminishes<\/strong> God. Who is God? He is almighty, perfect, and infinite. The moment we try to turn that infinite God into a physical image, we do not benefit; instead, we bring about the wrongful result of shrinking God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, we might keep a photo of our parents on our phone because we love them. Looking at that photo to remember them is a wonderful thing. The photo is a great tool for remembrance. However, if you love that photo so much that you ignore your parents sitting in the living room and instead talk to the picture, saying, &#8220;Father, Mother, how are you?&#8221; it makes no sense. The photo is a means, but the essence is loving and honoring the actual parents. Similarly, if we turn God into an image, He is diminished, and we end up failing to serve Him properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond being diminished, God ends up being <strong>replaced<\/strong>. If a king issues a royal decree and the official fails to deliver the message, instead acting as if he himself were the king by usurping royal authority, that is wrong. The danger of diminishing God through imagery leads to replacement. The true God disappears, and some image representing Him takes His place. The initial intent of the golden calf might have been to serve God well, but the moment they made it, they began serving the calf. The calf made to serve God ended up stealing and obscuring His glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God is omnipresent; He is everywhere. But the moment we replace God\u2019s presence with an image, He is no longer the God who is everywhere, but the &#8220;God who is only there.&#8221; We might tremble in fear before the image, but the moment we leave that spot, God is no longer visible, and we feel as though we can live however we want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the greatest danger is that God is reduced to a <strong>tool<\/strong> for our own use. If God is the invisible, almighty Lord of all, we will always stand humbly before Him. But if God is diminished into an image we can touch and move at will, it becomes very &#8220;convenient.&#8221; We can take Him wherever we want\u2014to our place of business, for instance\u2014and say, &#8220;God, protect this place,&#8221; turning Him into a means of obtaining blessings according to our own will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can clearly see the desire behind why people want to make idols: it is because we are selfish and greedy beings. Exodus 20:4 says, <strong>&#8220;You shall not make for yourself a carved image&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong> People make idols because of their own desires. In reality, instead of worshipping God, they are using Him as a means to satisfy their selfish desire to live well and eat well. They aren&#8217;t worshipping out of gratitude for the grace of God, who loved them enough to give His Son on the cross; they are coveting God&#8217;s omnipotence to use it as a tool for their own satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sin was repeated throughout Israel&#8217;s history. In 1 Samuel 4, they treated the Ark of the Covenant like an idol. They thought that since God was in the Ark, simply taking it with them would guarantee victory in war, thus turning God into a tool. In Judges 8:27, an ephod was made of gold. The ephod, a tool given to seek God&#8217;s will, was so &#8220;convenient&#8221; that they fashioned it in gold and worshipped it like an idol, which ultimately became a snare to the nation of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anything we use has the potential to become an idol. While it is good to treat things used for God\u2014like the pulpit or church furnishings\u2014with reverence, it is wrong to idolize them by thinking, &#8220;If I treat this poorly, I&#8217;ll be cursed; if I treat it well, I&#8217;ll be blessed.&#8221; The same applies to the cross. If you are bowing before a cross saying &#8220;I pray, I pray&#8221; for blessings, you have turned the cross into an idol. Because of this, the Hapdong denomination once decided to forbid attaching crosses to pulpits. In truth, the important thing is our heart; I do not believe that legalistically judging every single item is a correct interpretation of Scripture. If looking at a cross helps you think of the love of Jesus Christ, it is perfectly fine to use, but we must always guard against the heart-attitude of idolization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the church building can degenerate into an idol. There have been errors where building a sanctuary was marketed as being equivalent to God, and people were coerced into building funds with promises that &#8220;building a sanctuary brings blessings,&#8221; thus idolizing the project. I pray that our new sanctuary does not become our idol. If we feel discouraged because we lack a building or become proud because we built a magnificent one, we are making an idol of the sanctuary. This building should be a useful tool for witnessing the gospel and doing ministry, not a source of our own pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of God is He? Today\u2019s text says He is a <strong>jealous God<\/strong>. The expression that He visits the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations is not God threatening us like a mobster; it is said because He truly loves us. He warns us with a heart of love because He knows how miserable the results will be when we turn Him into a tool or an idol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God is the one who loves us completely. We must not use God as a &#8220;convenient tool&#8221; but serve Him properly as our Lord and the King of kings. Even when God loved us, He did not treat us as a tool. He didn&#8217;t think, &#8220;If I love this person, it will benefit Me.&#8221; Instead, He loved us exactly as we were\u2014useless sinners\u2014and gave His Son for us.
