look at the third commandment. The third commandment instructs us not to take the name of God in vain. When it says we must not call upon God\u2019s name in vain, what does the word &#8220;in vain&#8221; actually mean? How would one use God\u2019s name to be considered as using it &#8220;in vain&#8221;? In English Bibles, this is translated as &#8220;in vain,&#8221; meaning &#8220;fruitlessly&#8221; or &#8220;emptily.&#8221; Thus, we can see that God is forbidding us from calling upon Him pointlessly or using His name in a meaningless way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the original Hebrew text, the word used for &#8220;false&#8221; in the command &#8220;Do not bear false witness&#8221; is the exact same word used for &#8220;in vain&#8221; in this commandment. Therefore, it was said that one should not give an empty or hollow testimony that lacks substance; similarly, the third commandment forbids using God&#8217;s name in such a hollow, futile, or meaningless manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all use the name of God. This commandment is likely a warning not to utter that name pointlessly, use it carelessly, or employ it in an insulting way. If we understand this commandment by shifting it toward a more positive meaning, it would be that we must treat God\u2019s name as precious and use it with a heart of respect for Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of God is He? He is the honorable God, the glorious God, and the Lord of all things. If He is the Lord, we shouldn&#8217;t use Him carelessly, should we? In that sense, the third commandment is perfectly suited for God. In the past, when North Korean cheerleaders visited South Korea, their reaction to seeing a portrait of Kim Jong-il lying abandoned in the rain on the ground was quite shocking to us South Koreans, wasn&#8217;t it? Those cheerleaders rushed over to embrace it, showing how pained they were that the photo of their &#8220;Dignified Supreme Leader&#8221; was being treated so carelessly, and they showed an attitude of trying to protect it. Since our God is far higher than any supreme leader, it can be said that it is only natural to treat everything related to God with courtesy, politeness, and dignity rather than treating Him recklessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were told not to use God\u2019s name in vain, but does this mean we are not allowed to use His name at all? You understand it to mean we <em>can<\/em> use it, right? Yes. However, ancient Jews understood this commandment to mean that one should not use God&#8217;s name at all. They likely thought this way out of fear that by uttering His name carelessly, they might damage His glory, so they made it so the name could not be spoken at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, the Jews of Jesus&#8217; time understood the third commandment in a way that the name of God should absolutely never cross one&#8217;s lips. Thus, when reading the Scriptures and encountering the word &#8220;Jehovah,&#8221; which is God&#8217;s name, they remembered this commandment and did not utter the word. Instead, they substituted it with another word. That substitute was <strong>&#8216;Adonai.&#8217;<\/strong> The meaning of this Hebrew word is <strong>&#8220;Lord.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever the four Hebrew letters representing God\u2019s name (the Tetragrammaton) appeared, the Jews read it as &#8220;Adonai&#8221; instead of its original pronunciation. As hundreds of years passed in this manner, later generations eventually forgot how those four letters were actually supposed to be pronounced. It is like calling your grandfather only &#8220;Grandfather&#8221; without ever knowing his actual name, until you eventually forget it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jews were a people just like us, and they had a period where they lost their own language. During the Babylonian exile, they were unable to use Hebrew and spoke Aramaic, leading them to lose the ability to read the Hebrew Bible. As a result, the exact pronunciation of God\u2019s name was forgotten. The &#8220;Yehowah&#8221; in the Korean Bible or &#8220;Jehovah&#8221; in English Bibles are actually not the correct pronunciations. This is because they were formed by taking the Hebrew consonants and adding the vowels from &#8220;Adonai.&#8221; Scholars speculate that the original name of God was most likely <strong>&#8216;Yahweh.&#8217;<\/strong> Therefore, in some denominations like the Full Gospel or the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK), it is read as Yahweh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the third commandment is not telling us not to call upon God\u2019s name, but rather teaching us not to use it rudely or pointlessly. This commandment is not simply a matter of how to pronounce a name, but a commandment about how we should treat God. This is because a name represents the entirety of a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because God is almighty, He is very attractive to people. How wonderful would it be if God answered all my prayers and moved exactly according to my will? Thus, people feel a desire to use God&#8217;s omnipotence to fill their own greed, win wars, and become rich. The third commandment warns us against an attitude of merely trying to exploit His &#8220;use-value&#8221; rather than worshipping Him with awe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hophni and Phinehas in the book of 1 Samuel are examples of this. They were men who insulted God and took the sacrificial offerings for themselves, yet when they were about to lose in battle, they took the Ark of the Covenant to the battlefield. They didn&#8217;t do this because they loved God, but because they wanted to use Him as a tool to summon His power and win the war. This is exactly what it means to use God&#8217;s name in vain. King Saul was the same. His reason for offering a sacrifice without waiting for Samuel was not because he wanted to worship God, but because he had turned God into a tool to gather his scattering soldiers and win the war. This may look like faith, but it is actually a wicked heart trying to use God for one&#8217;s own benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Pharisees also fasted and prayed because they loved receiving applause from people. Trying to use God to have one&#8217;s own status recognized is an act of using God&#8217;s name recklessly. If a man confesses false love to a woman just because he wants to become the son-in-law of a wealthy family, would you call that true love? God wants to be loved and worshipped for who He is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our Confucian society, we are taught not to speak our parents&#8217; names carelessly. It is easy to understand the third commandment through that concept, but in reality, the center of the heart is more important than the terminology. Some preach that habits like Americans saying &#8220;Oh my God&#8221; when surprised or &#8220;Jesus&#8221; when something bad happens are violations of the third commandment. However, even if one calls Him &#8220;The Most High&#8221; as solemnly as the Jews did, if the heart is trying to use God, that is the sin of instrumentalization. On the other hand, Jesus taught us to call God <strong>&#8216;Abba&#8217;<\/strong> (Father). The essence is who you think God is and how you serve Him, rather than formality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In relation to this, making oaths is also a misuse of God&#8217;s name. In Matthew chapter 5, Jesus said not to swear at all. Swearing by God&#8217;s name to claim the legitimacy of one&#8217;s own words is an act of exploiting God. As in the verse &#8220;Let your &#8216;Yes&#8217; be &#8216;Yes,&#8217; and your &#8216;No,&#8217; &#8216;No,'&#8221; we must not use God wickedly for our own gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must always ask ourselves: &#8220;Why am I calling upon the name of God?&#8221; Are you talking about faith just to hide your own wickedness or greed? Approaching someone as a fellow believer only to commit fraud, selling the name of the church for personal profit, or mentioning God&#8217;s name to achieve political goals are all grave sins that violate the third commandment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God is the object of our worship; He is not someone who should become our tool. Do not use God to fulfill your own honor or to receive applause from people. Treating God as God is the core of the third commandment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we can be thankful for is the fact that God never used us as a tool. The reason God gave His Son to the cross was not because we were &#8220;useful.&#8221; He made us His children simply because He loved us, even though we were useless and constantly sinning.
