Therefore, we will examine it today. There are two problems we need to resolve regarding this fourth commandment. The first is: &#8220;Which day exactly are we supposed to keep?&#8221; The second is: &#8220;How exactly are we supposed to keep that day?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing we must consider is which day we are to keep holy. To be precise, what day of the week is the Sabbath? Many people think it is Sunday, but it is actually Saturday. If you look at our calendars, what day does the first day of the week begin with? It starts on Sunday, which makes the last day\u2014the seventh day\u2014Saturday. Traditionally, Jews keep the Sabbath on Saturday. I used to live in the United States, and there are areas where many Jewish people reside. Every Saturday, I would see them dressed in black, wearing black hats, with husbands, wives, and children holding hands and walking to their synagogues to worship. Since it was the Sabbath and they were not allowed to work, they chose to walk rather than drive. So, strictly speaking, Saturday is the Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, our Protestant churches\u2014and the Catholic Church as well\u2014set aside Sunday, the Lord&#8217;s Day, as our day of worship. Why do we keep Sunday instead of Saturday? It is because Jesus rose from the dead on this day. Since Jesus was resurrected on the dawn of the first day of the week\u2014Sunday\u2014following the Sabbath, we celebrate that day as the Lord\u2019s Day. This tradition has been passed down continuously from the Early Church to the present. From this, a &#8220;theology of the Lord&#8217;s Day&#8221; developed. In the Old Testament, people worked for six days and then rested on the last day, looking forward to a future rest. In the New Testament era, a theology developed where we rest first, grounded in the rest already accomplished by Jesus, and then work through the week with the joy of that rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is a group called the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They strongly object to Protestants and Catholics keeping Sunday. They argue that the Bible commands us to remember the Sabbath day, so why keep Sunday instead? They insist on worshipping on Saturday. So, is it right to keep Saturday or the Lord&#8217;s Day? We need to resolve this by looking at our second question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second question is: &#8220;How exactly are we supposed to keep the Sabbath?&#8221; According to the text we read today, we are told not to work on the Sabbath. So, what are we to do? God&#8217;s commandment is to rest from labor. In the Korean church, the tradition has been that &#8220;keeping the Lord&#8217;s Day holy&#8221; means not working on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those of you who have been in the faith for a long time remember vividly how the Korean church used to keep Sunday, right? In the past, we didn&#8217;t spend money on Sundays. We didn&#8217;t go to restaurants or buy things; we prepared everything on Saturday, even for the church&#8217;s needs. We didn&#8217;t watch television or enjoy entertainment, and students didn&#8217;t study. When I was in high school, I didn&#8217;t study on Sundays. When did I study? I would wake up and start studying the moment it turned midnight and became Monday. However, those traditions have largely disappeared. Now, people spend money, work, and go to their jobs as they please; the tradition of resting on Sunday has faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So today, we ask again: &#8220;How do we keep this fourth commandment\u2014to remember the Sabbath and not work\u2014in a way that honors God&#8217;s word?&#8221; Before we answer, we must consider the reason <em>why<\/em> God gave us this commandment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we don&#8217;t understand God&#8217;s purpose for this commandment, our observance risks turning into legalism. The Pharisees were the prime example of this. How did they keep the Sabbath? Extremely strictly. Since God said not to work, they didn&#8217;t work. But what defines &#8220;work&#8221;? At what point does lifting an object become work? Is lifting a cup work? What about a bag of rice heavier than a cup? To solve these dilemmas, the Pharisees distinguished between movements that constituted work and those that didn&#8217;t. They regulated exactly how many kilograms one could lift or how many meters one could walk before it was classified as &#8220;work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jews kept the law this way, but God did not look at them and say, &#8220;Well done.&#8221; Instead, when Jesus saw the Pharisees, He rebuked them, saying, &#8220;Woe to you!&#8221; Why? Even though they tried to keep the law perfectly, the Lord did not accept them because while they seemed to keep the law, their hearts were far from Him. Matthew 15:8 says: &#8220;These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.&#8221; This is a perfect description of legalism. The problem with the Pharisees was that they were bound by the literal regulations of the law, keeping it out of obligation without ever knowing the true heart of God who gave the commandment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the critical question we must ask is: <strong>&#8220;Why did God give the Sabbath commandment?&#8221;<\/strong> He gave it to prevent us from worshipping money or possessions as idols. What is labor? Work is the means by which we gain money and wealth. To earn a lot of money, one must work a lot\u2014just as a student who studies more gets better grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, God is telling us not to work so much and not to toil so hard. Why? Because if we turn wealth into an idol and believe that possessions are what sustain us and make us happy, our lives will ultimately become miserable. If you work feverishly just to earn more money, you don&#8217;t become happier; instead, parents and children grow distant, marriages break down, and families are scattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because God loves us, the fourth commandment\u2014the law of the Sabbath\u2014is His way of telling us to work in moderation so that we don&#8217;t destroy our bodies, ruin our homes, and walk the path of destruction. He didn&#8217;t give this commandment to make our lives difficult. He told us to rest because wealth is merely a means; if we treat it as an idol and sacrifice everything for it, we will inevitably perish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a way, God\u2019s heart is like that of a parent. Little children love candy. It tastes so good they want to keep eating it. But would a parent who truly loves their child provide an unlimited supply of candy? No, there is a time to stop. Eating only candy leads to nutritional imbalance. Just as a parent says, &#8220;It\u2019s time for dinner now; you need to eat the rice and side dishes I&#8217;ve prepared to stay healthy,&#8221; God tells us to rest to prevent us from overworking ourselves for wealth and heading toward ruin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sabbath commandment isn&#8217;t just about taking one day off a week; it is a safety mechanism God provided so we don&#8217;t perish in our labor, enslaved to the idol of money. To think that simply doing &#8220;nothing&#8221; mechanically is enough is to misunderstand God&#8217;s word. The Pharisees thought that as long as they didn&#8217;t work, they were fine. That attitude is like two children fighting whose mother told them &#8220;Don&#8217;t move,&#8221; so they keep fighting while watching to see if the other&#8217;s nostrils are moving. The parent&#8217;s true heart isn&#8217;t about them staying still; it&#8217;s about them loving each other and being at peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same applies to the Sabbath. God told them to rest, and the Pharisees did no work, but they missed the reason why. The meaning of the Sabbath is to stop pushing our lives into agony by making wealth an idol. Yet, while doing no &#8220;work,&#8221; the Pharisees still worshipped money, exploited their neighbors, practiced usury, and committed all sorts of evil. When they congratulated themselves saying, &#8220;I kept the Sabbath,&#8221; the Lord called them hypocrites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, Jesus worked on the Sabbath. He healed a man with a withered hand in the synagogue. Why did He work when God said not to? Because God\u2019s heart isn&#8217;t about the absence of activity; it is about loving and caring for our neighbors. When Jesus\u2019 disciples were hungry and plucked grain to eat, and the Pharisees rebuked them, Jesus protected His disciples because He knew God\u2019s true intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regrettably, the Korean church in the past often believed that acting like the Pharisees was the sign of a good spiritual life. There was a sense of self-satisfaction in thinking, &#8220;I&#8217;m okay because I didn&#8217;t spend money or do anything on Sunday.&#8221; We must understand the fundamental purpose of the Sabbath law. The specific date itself is not what is absolutely important, as Adventists believe. God is not someone who is pleased simply by a mechanical observance of a specific day. Nor is it right to think that avoiding anything that &#8220;looks&#8221; like work is enough. Matthew 23:23 teaches us: &#8220;Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices\u2014mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law\u2014justice, mercy and faithfulness.&#8221; The reason the Lord gave the law is so that we would live with justice, mercy, and faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens if we make money or possessions our idol? We begin to abuse our own bodies. We work without rest to gain more, eventually losing our health and impoverishing our lives. Furthermore, we begin to exploit our neighbors. We treat employees poorly, refuse to pay a fair wage, and try to build wealth while destroying the happiness of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why God tells us: don&#8217;t do that. Rest yourself, let your servants and the strangers in your house rest, and even give rest to your animals. This rest stems from love and mercy. Yet, there is anxiety in our hearts: &#8220;If I rest, I can&#8217;t earn money. Won&#8217;t I fail?&#8221; To that, the Word says: &#8220;Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.&#8221; As believers, we must trust God. You must believe that it is God&#8217;s grace, not money, that sustains you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psalm 127 teaches us: &#8220;Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat\u2014for he grants sleep to those he loves.&#8221; You don&#8217;t live well by being awake 24 hours a day; when you trust God and rest, He feeds and clothes you. Will the God who clothes the lilies of the field and feeds the birds of the air not care for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law of rest is a commandment given because God loves us. It is not a mob-like threat saying, &#8220;I&#8217;ll kill you if you don&#8217;t follow my words.&#8221; It is an exhortation from a parental heart. Just as a parent tells a child who is ruining their health by studying all night, &#8220;Dear, stop now and get some rest,&#8221; God says to those of us who are destroying ourselves and exploiting others in the race for wealth: &#8220;Stop now, rest, and rely on God.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord leads us to the path of rest. He said in Matthew 11:28: &#8220;Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.&#8221; Money exhausts us, but Jesus Christ took our burdens upon Himself on the cross and gives us true rest. Believe that He is inviting you to that place of rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beloved saints, how then should we practically keep the law of rest? Some ask, &#8220;Can I watch a soccer game on Sunday? Can I do this or that?&#8221; I do not want to give a one-size-fits-all answer like the Pharisees, saying &#8220;This is sin&#8221; and &#8220;That is okay.&#8221; The same act can be evil for one person and good for another. We must understand God&#8217;s heart. We must live by discovering what the Holy Spirit is leading us to do in our actual circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as the hungry disciples plucked grain, there may be circumstances where one must work. When we meditate on God&#8217;s heart according to our individual situations and practice love, mercy, and kindness toward our neighbors, that is the true path to keeping the Sabbath.
