Texts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCould it be that Pastor Kim didn\u2019t come?\u201d My wife approached me in the early morning and asked cautiously. Pastor Kim was in charge of the early morning prayer service this week, and if he couldn\u2019t make it due to some unforeseen circumstance, I might need to step up to the pulpit in an emergency. So, she came to let me know that I needed to be prepared for any possibility. \u201cYes, he\u2019s here,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither my wife nor I had actually seen Pastor Kim. My wife saw that the lights in the office were off and couldn\u2019t see him in the main sanctuary, so she thought he might not have arrived. However, I believed Pastor Kim would lead the early morning prayer service as planned because I saw his car parked in the church lot, the wall lights in the main sanctuary were on, and the music for the prayer service was playing. Although I hadn\u2019t met Pastor Kim before entering the sanctuary, I was confident the service would proceed normally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We encounter various signals, and we must accurately judge what those signals mean. The office light being off and not seeing him inside the church are signals of absence; my wife saw those. Yet, there were also signals of presence: his car was parked, the wall lights were lit, and the music was playing. Combining these conflicting signals, one must conclude that Pastor Kim will lead the early morning prayer service today. Furthermore, the signals of absence should be understood differently. The lights being off and him not being visible in the sanctuary do not necessarily mean he is absent; they could indicate he is in another location\u2014for instance, he might have stepped away to the restroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have emphasized that the principle of <em>tota scriptura<\/em> (the whole of Scripture) is crucial in interpreting the Bible. We must not draw conclusions from just a fragment of Scripture, but pay attention to what the entire Bible teaches. For example, regarding issue A, if one part of Scripture explains it as B and another part explains it as C, we should not ignore B and conclude A = C, nor ignore C and conclude A = B. But if B and C appear to be contradictory teachings, how can we determine what the whole of Scripture teaches? Since both A = B and A = C are incorrect interpretations, should we say A = D? No, that is not the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In truth, we read various signals from the Bible, and we can draw conclusions by considering them comprehensively. Looking at only a subset of signals leads to wrong conclusions, while certain signals guide us toward the correct answer. Therefore, the principle of <em>tota scriptura<\/em> means we must carefully evaluate both signal B and signal C. Even if we encounter signals of Pastor Kim\u2019s absence, we cannot conclude that his absence is the reality when signals of his presence exist. Although signals of absence exist, they can be interpreted in ways other than absence. In this case, where evidence of B (absence) and C (presence) are mixed, we choose C over B. No one can criticize this by asking why one side is chosen while claiming to consider the whole, because evidence of presence overrides evidence of absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The principle of <em>tota scriptura<\/em> does not mean that when multiple signals exist in the Bible, we simply favor whichever side has a higher numerical count. No matter how numerous the pieces of evidence for absence are, if even a single piece of evidence for presence is found, we must side with presence. As for the evidence of absence, we simply need to provide an explanation for it. For example, the Bible has overwhelming evidence (B) that God chose only the nation of Israel. Gentiles were not chosen, and among them, the Moabites and Ammonites were declared forbidden from entering the assembly of the Lord forever. Yet, we must not conclude that only the Israelites can be God\u2019s people and non-Israelites cannot. This is because God is the Father of all nations, and the Lord\u2019s mandate exists to make disciples of all nations (C). In terms of sheer numbers, the exclusive message (B) is overwhelmingly predominant. However, the message of God\u2019s love for all humanity (C) overrides that exclusive message. Therefore, we must conclude A = C and explain the context in which message B should be understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can explain this in two ways. First, we could conclude that the exclusive message (B) is the principle God intended, and the inclusion of Gentiles (C) was merely a limited exception. Conversely, we could view the inclusive message (C) as God\u2019s ultimate intention, concluding that the exclusive message (B) was temporary during the Old Testament era, or that even within those exclusive messages, God\u2019s ultimate intent to save all humanity was revealed intermittently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which of these two explanations is more compelling? It is right to conclude that the message of God being the God of all humanity\u2014not just of Israel\u2014aligns with the teaching of the whole of Scripture. This is just like accepting presence when signals of both absence and presence coexist. There are parts of the Bible that appear contradictory. In such cases, picking only what fits our existing biases and concluding \u201cI was right\u201d is foolish.
