Is there a poem that instantly springs from your heart whenever you close your eyes, one that you can recite on the spot? You might ask, &#8220;Do you have one?&#8221; Well, I am asking because I do! If I didn&#8217;t, I wouldn&#8217;t bring it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a poem that always rises in my heart, and above all, the first poem that comes to mind is &#8220;Prologue&#8221; (<em>Seosi<\/em>) by the poet Yun Dong-ju. You all know &#8220;Prologue&#8221; well, don&#8217;t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Wishing to be free from shame<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unto the day I die,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the wind blowing through the leaves<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Made my heart ache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a mind that sings of stars,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I shall love all dying things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I must walk the path<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That has been given to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tonight, again, the wind sweeps past the stars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. It is a song deeply engraved upon my soul, a poem that I simply cannot forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not just &#8220;Prologue.&#8221; The poetry collection Yun Dong-ju left behind in this world is only a single volume. In fact, he did not publish it during his lifetime. After he died at the young age of twenty-seven in Fukuoka Prison, his friend gathered his remaining manuscripts and published his sole poetry collection: <em>Heaven, Wind, Stars, and Poetry<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The poems contained within it\u2014&#8221;Prologue,&#8221; &#8220;Counting the Stars at Night,&#8221; and above all, &#8220;The Cross,&#8221; &#8220;A New Path,&#8221; and &#8220;Self-Portrait&#8221;\u2014are precious poems and songs etched into my soul second only to the Bible. Of course, nothing can surpass the Bible, but second only to Scripture, they are deeply engraved upon my heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a movie depicting the life and literary world of this poet, Yun Dong-ju. I did not watch this movie in a theater. It was precisely during this summer season. Years ago, while residing in the United States, I boarded a Korean national carrier to go on a ministry trip to China. The wonderful thing about flying on a national carrier is that you can watch Korean films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I watched this movie on the plane and loved it so much that I replayed it, and replayed it, and replayed it again. I cannot forget how those teens of flight hours vanished in an instant. This film, released in 2016, was directed by the famous director Lee Joon-ik\u2014who directed <em>King and the Clown<\/em>. It portrays Yun Dong-ju\u2019s brief life against the painful backdrop of his era, depicting it with incredible beauty and intensity. Usually, if something is intense, it is difficult for it to be beautiful, and if it is beautiful, it is hard to be intense; yet this film captures both beauty and fierce intensity. When you return home, I encourage you to look it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scene that impressed me most in this movie was near the end. As a young man studying at Doshisha University in Japan, Yun Dong-ju was branded an anti-Japanese subversive and arrested. He was taken to Fukuoka Prison, and the scene depicts his interrogation by an Imperial Japanese detective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, rather than a routine interrogation between a detective and a criminal, it became a fierce debate over ideology and values. In the end, the core of that debate over values was this: &#8220;What do we live for?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What do we live for?&#8221; The logic of the Imperial Japanese detective was cold and terrifying. He advocated for Imperial Japanese militarism, which put forward absolute self-interest and the logic of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, whether it was Imperial Japanese militarism or Hitler&#8217;s Nazism, the core was absolute self-interest: the logic of force and the law of the jungle. &#8220;The strong survive, and the weak are consumed.&#8221; They believed it was proper for the weak to die out and be eliminated. In short, they asserted, &#8220;The weak are unnecessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, they proclaimed the &#8220;Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.&#8221; That was the slogan of Imperial Japanese militarism\u2014that Greater East Asia must prosper together. But what was their actual claim? They argued that for the sake of &#8220;co-prosperity,&#8221; Japan\u2014as the most powerful nation\u2014had to rule over all other countries. They insisted it was only natural for powerless nations and powerless peoples to be trampled, eliminated, and swept over the horizon of history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then do not their own words contradict themselves? They called it &#8220;co-prosperity.&#8221; Co-prosperity means living together. Then what does it mean to live together? What are they living together for? For whose sake is this co-prosperity, and for what purpose?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the reality of imperialism: an endless self-interest, an empire of their own devoid of universal human values, a nation of the powerful. In the end, Yun Dong-ju could not align his life with their imperial game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yun Dong-ju was an intellectual, a man who, with just a little compromise, could easily have found opportunities to side with those in power. Yet even when that path was clearly visible before his eyes, he could not choose it. Why? Because the Christian conscience within him\u2014his conviction as a citizen of the Kingdom of God who believed in Jesus\u2014would not allow it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eighty years have passed since he ended his life in prison at the flowering age of twenty-seven. Today, it is said that we live in a nation liberated from Imperial Japanese rule, having reclaimed our light (<em>Gwangbok<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, have our lives truly changed? Are the values of our lives any different from theirs? What, indeed, are we living for? In the end, do we not also succumb to the survival of the fittest and the law of the jungle, thinking, &#8220;It&#8217;s only natural for the strong to eat and the weak to be eaten; that&#8217;s just how the world works&#8221;? Calling this endless competition &#8220;fairness,&#8221; are we not struggling to erect our own little kingdoms and empires within the wheel of relentless competition?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How is the logic today different from the imperialistic and militaristic logic that the poet Yun Dong-ju could not accept? Is it truly any different? Are we genuinely living while seeking the values and righteousness of God&#8217;s Kingdom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>August is approaching. When August comes, we do not merely refer to the moment of our liberation from Imperial Japanese rule as &#8220;liberation&#8221;; we call it <em>Gwangbok<\/em>\u2014the restoration of light. Have we truly recovered the light that the darkness stole from us? Are we living as children of the light, seeking that light within the illumination we have found?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John 1:5 tells us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.\u201d (John 1:5, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not that people fail to understand because there is no light; the Light has already come before us, yet because we are darkness, we do not comprehend the Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John 3:19 states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.\u201d (John 3:19, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The writer of the Gospel of John tells us that even though the Light has come, the reason people fail to recognize it is that they still love darkness more than light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Luke 5:39, the final verse of Luke chapter 5, which we read two weeks ago, this statement appeared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, \u2018The old is good.\u2019\u201d (Luke 5:39, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>People say, &#8220;The old is good,&#8221; &#8220;I will just live as I am,&#8221; and &#8220;Leave me to live the way I have always lived.&#8221; This portrays people who are uncomfortable with change, who reject it, and who refuse to welcome a new era. Feeling sorrow for them, Jesus was proclaiming that the new era of the Kingdom of God had arrived among them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, in chapter 6, a dispute arises between Jesus and the Pharisees regarding the Sabbath. It is crucial to view this Sabbath dispute not as an out-of-the-blue topic, but within this very context: &#8220;A new era has opened. Jesus has come to this earth to open a new era. What is this new era He opens like? What are the values of the Kingdom He pursues?&#8221; We must continually encounter Jesus, who is revealing these truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the main interest of the story in Luke chapter 6\u2014which consists of two passages, both unfolding around the Sabbath\u2014is not actually whether we should keep the Sabbath or not. When keeping the Sabbath, the point is not: &#8220;Should we keep it up to this point or that point? Is it work if we do it up to here, but not work if we do it up to there?&#8221; Those technicalities are not what matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have probably agonized over Sabbath observance in the past, haven&#8217;t you? Didn&#8217;t our elders worry when going to church, &#8220;Should I take the bus or not?&#8221; They thought, &#8220;We were told not to spend money on the Lord&#8217;s Day, but I have to go to church\u2014should I ride the bus or walk?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A slightly more serious dilemma was: &#8220;A distant relative visited on the Lord&#8217;s Day, but I didn&#8217;t buy groceries in advance. There is no food to cook. What should I do? Should I let the guest go hungry on the Lord&#8217;s Day? Serve only plain rice? Should I go grocery shopping or not?&#8221; Has anyone ever had such a thought? Ah, yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then what about today? You might think, &#8220;Since the pastor is preaching on this text today, I will finally get the answer.&#8221; Will I give you the answer to that today or not? I am sorry to say, but today&#8217;s text does not give an answer to that question. I believe you can find that answer for yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What Luke truly wants to convey through today&#8217;s account is this: &#8220;Who does Jesus consider Himself to be?&#8221; Who is Jesus saying He is right now? What we must understand through today&#8217;s text is precisely that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we read the Gospels\u2014and indeed all of Scripture\u2014it is vital to properly understand and grasp the author&#8217;s core intent according to the context of the story. Because many parables and situations appear in the Gospels, we can get so absorbed in the situation that we miss the actual message meant to be revealed through the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is like this: suppose there is an event at our church\u2014an invitation service for VIP guests. Someone is standing at the entrance as a guide. A sign says &#8220;Restroom,&#8221; and the guide points, saying, &#8220;The restroom is over that way.&#8221; When someone sees the sign &#8220;Restroom,&#8221; where should they go? They should go over there! The restroom is not right at the sign; it is over there. But if someone sees the sign &#8220;Restroom&#8221; and tries to relieve themselves right on the sign, what would happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as the Pharisees were doing that, we must not read this text merely as a debate over how to keep the regulations of the Sabbath, or whether it is permissible to do something up to a certain limit. To read it that way is to misread the Gospels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we must see is not the Sabbath issue raised by the Pharisees, but the intent behind Jesus&#8217; response to them. It is crucial to examine the intent of Jesus&#8217; words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us look at them one by one. What is the essence of Jesus&#8217; response in the first event? In short, He compares Himself and His disciples to the situation of David and his companions\u2014before David became king. Jesus is likening Himself to King David. That is the focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event took place on the Sabbath. On the Sabbath, as Jesus and His disciples were passing through the grainfields, His disciples grew hungry. Serving such a famous Master, one would expect them to be careful and mindful of their every action, but they had not reached that level of maturity. As they followed Jesus, they grew hungry, and since there was a grainfield beside them, they plucked heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did our elders ever do that in the past? In the autumn, walking along the paddy dikes when hungry, if the heads of grain were ripe and golden, you would pluck them, rub them in your hands, and toss them into your mouth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who saw this? The Pharisees saw it. Look at what happened: it was the Sabbath, and plucking the heads of grain counted as harvesting. Rubbing them in their hands counted as threshing. They harvested, threshed, and ate! They engaged in agricultural labor and consumed the yield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We caught them red-handed! The disciples of Teacher Jesus are harvesting, threshing, and eating on the Sabbath. They clearly broke the rule!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To those who made this accusation, the Lord intentionally brought up the action of King David and his followers. Look closely at His intent. In verse 3, Jesus says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd Jesus answered them, \u2018Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him?\u2019\u201d (Luke 6:3, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He and those who were with him&#8221;\u2014David and his companions, Jesus and His disciples. The comparison is exact, isn&#8217;t it? He is intentionally making a direct comparison: &#8220;They also did this when they were hungry.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you see the intent behind these words? Did David&#8217;s group break the Sabbath regulation? Well, the word &#8220;Sabbath&#8221; does not appear in that Old Testament passage; rather, they broke the sanctuary regulation. Let us see what they did in 1 Samuel 21:6:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSo the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the LORD.\u201d (1 Samuel 21:6, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Entering the sanctuary, David said to the priest, &#8220;Give me something to eat; I am starving.&#8221; The priest Ahimelech responded, &#8220;There is no common bread, only the holy bread of the Presence.&#8221; &#8220;Holy&#8221; means set apart, which means it was not for just anyone to eat, because it had been offered before the Lord. Only the priests\u2014God&#8217;s anointed servants\u2014could eat the bread of the Presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did Ahimelech give that bread to David and his men or not? He gave it to them. The priest Ahimelech handed over the bread\u2014reserved only for priests\u2014for David and his followers to eat. Yet Scripture does not condemn David&#8217;s action. Why? Because he was God&#8217;s anointed servant. He was not yet king, but because he had been set apart to become king and carry out the work of God&#8217;s Kingdom, God permitted them to eat the holy bread for the sake of their lives and ministry. Thus, Scripture does not condemn them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Samuel had anointed David when he was just a young boy in his father&#8217;s house, and many years of suffering passed before he ascended the throne. Jesus is now comparing Himself to David\u2014before David ascended as king, yet already anointed and chosen by God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord had also been anointed by the Holy Spirit. Where? At the Jordan River. Do not forget this already! We are only at Luke chapter 6; you must not forget it yet. He received the anointing at the Jordan River when the Holy Spirit descended upon Him like a dove, accompanied by the Father&#8217;s voice: &#8220;This is my beloved Son; listen to him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When is the moment of His royal enthronement? He declared that when He hangs on the tree and fulfills the Father&#8217;s will on the cross, that will be the moment of His exaltation. Dying on the cross, rising from the tomb, and ascending into heaven\u2014that glorious moment is the day He ascends as King, possessing all authority in heaven and on earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Until the Lord claims that authority over heaven and earth as King, He passes through a time of suffering, just as David did. Yet the Lord declares that He has already come to this earth, and He has prepared and inaugurated the day when His kingship will be fully realized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the Lord clearly intends to reveal here is the proclamation of Himself as the One anointed as King. The essential truth is that for the One anointed by God, fulfilling His mission is what matters; no set of binding regulations and rules can obstruct His ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus was anointed as the King of Israel, and He awaits the day when that kingship will be fully revealed. Those who followed David\u2014Scripture records that all kinds of distressed and outcast people followed him. The same was true for the disciples who followed Jesus: fishermen, tax collectors, sinners, a ragtag group. The Lord was walking that path together with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this very scene, Luke uses a decisive expression to show us how Jesus wished to reveal Himself. That statement is verse 5:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd he said to them, \u2018The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.\u2019\u201d (Luke 6:5, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Are you picking a fight with Me using Sabbath regulations? Look at the One standing before you!&#8221; What does He call Himself? The Son of Man!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You know the profound meaning contained in this title &#8220;Son of Man.&#8221; In Daniel chapter 7, there appears &#8220;one like a son of man.&#8221; He is the Messiah King promised by God, before whom all nations under heaven come to worship. The Lord refers to Himself as that very Son of Man\u2014the Son of Man!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He declares: &#8220;I am that Son of Man, I am that King, and I am the Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath does not exist for Me to serve its regulations; rather, the Sabbath prepares the way for Me. The rest given to you through Me was not given to bind you or make you slaves, but to bring you true rest, life, and restoration.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, when the Lord of the Sabbath comes before them and proclaims His time, whether His disciples kept every detail of the Sabbath regulations is no longer the main issue. There is no need to debate it any longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, regulations depend on interpretation. The Jews had countless volumes detailed with interpretations of the Law\u2014the Talmud, Midrash, commentaries upon commentaries. Every Jewish sect interpreted them differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you think all Jews were identical? Go to Israel, or go to the East Coast of the United States. Even among Jews, there are Orthodox, Reform, and Liberal traditions; Judaism has diverse sects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first arrived in New York and served as a junior pastor, there was an urgent medical emergency on a Saturday, and I had to visit a hospital. The hospital happened to be the Jewish Hospital in the middle of Manhattan\u2014an immense hospital established by a Jewish foundation. The patient I needed to visit was on the twenty-third floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because parking was delayed\u2014parking in Manhattan is notoriously difficult\u2014I was running late for my appointment. Hurrying inside, I stepped into an elevator. Since it was Saturday, it was quiet and empty. I got into an open elevator, but as it headed toward the twenty-third floor, it stopped at every single floor! There was no one inside, and I had pressed only the button for the twenty-third floor. I wondered what was wrong and grew thoroughly frustrated, but no matter what I pressed, it stopped on every floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After finally completing the visit, I went down to the security desk and asked, &#8220;What&#8217;s the problem?&#8221; The guard smiled and said, &#8220;It&#8217;s because today is Saturday.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because it was the Sabbath! On every Sabbath, the elevators in that Jewish hospital are programmed to stop automatically at every floor. Why? Because pressing an elevator button is considered work! To avoid breaking Sabbath regulations, they set it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When regulations are scrutinized to that degree, who could avoid breaking them? How a rule is applied changes everything. Opinions on what can or cannot be done on the Sabbath vary entirely from person to person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the truly vital truth is that for the work Jesus does\u2014to bring us life, peace, rest, and restoration\u2014those Sabbath regulations are no longer what matter most. The One who fulfills the true purpose and value of the Sabbath has come to us! He is accomplishing that work, so we no longer need to be bound by those legalistic rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new era, a new world initiated by God has begun, and Jesus is the One opening that world. Thus, Jesus is the substance, while the Sabbath regulations were merely a shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story that follows is the healing of the man with a withered hand. It carries the same message. It happened on another Sabbath. Do you sense the author&#8217;s intent in repeating this theme to emphasize it? Once again, it occurred on the Sabbath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scribes and Pharisees had singled out Jesus and His disciples, lying in wait: &#8220;Look, He slipped away last time, but if He breaks the Sabbath this time, we won&#8217;t let Him off. He is undermining our authority!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing their thoughts, the Lord intentionally had the man with the withered hand stand up before them. Then, rather than speaking directly to the man with the withered hand, the Lord spoke to the Pharisees and scribes who were watching Him closely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd Jesus said to them, \u2018I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?\u2019\u201d (Luke 6:9, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you see the Lord&#8217;s intent? His point is clear. They already knew the answer; it was not difficult. &#8220;Which is right: to do good or to do harm? To save life or to destroy it?&#8221; Obviously, doing good and saving life is right! Who could answer otherwise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is abundantly clear. The Lord presents a foundational standard for our moral judgment. In that standard, the key issue is not the intricate details of Sabbath regulations, nor whether one observed them flawlessly. The essential question is whether the action saves life or destroys it, whether it does good or evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there anything more important than saving a human life? Is there anything more crucial than restoring a person&#8217;s life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet people set human life aside, holding onto legalistic rules as if they were more important than human beings, using them to judge, condemn, and push people away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, this time Jesus did not perform any action that violated the Law. He did not even touch the man. He simply said, &#8220;Stretch out your hand,&#8221; words that did not violate the Law at all\u2014speaking on the Sabbath was permissible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet Jesus did not argue on those grounds. He did not say, &#8220;Look, did I do anything forbidden?&#8221; He did not debate that point. What mattered was intentionally proclaiming freedom from the ancestral laws and traditions that had bound them in bondage\u2014announcing that a glorious new era of true freedom, life, and restoration had begun through Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That proclamation was sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A famous line from a Korean film released a few years ago asked in a strong regional dialect, &#8220;What is truly important?!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must ask ourselves: What is truly important? If they had understood the true meaning of the Sabbath, they would naturally have rejoiced, praised, and given thanks together for the work of Jesus\u2014the Lord of the Sabbath\u2014who restored and saved a human life on that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet they had no gratitude or joy for the life that was saved and restored. Look at verses 10 and 11:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd after looking around at them all he said to him, \u2018Stretch out your hand.\u2019 And he did so, and his hand was restored. But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.\u201d (Luke 6:10\u201311, ESV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A hand that was shriveled like a dry bone was suddenly filled with blood, flesh, and life! An astonishing miracle took place right before their eyes. How would you react? You would shout &#8220;Wow!&#8221; or &#8220;Hallelujah!&#8221; That would be natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet how did they react? Verse 11 says, &#8220;They were filled with fury.&#8221; They were furious and whispered among themselves about how to destroy Jesus. Does that make any sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They possessed no gratitude or joy for a life restored. Why? Because to them, a restored life mattered far less than how Jesus was dismantling their authority, encroaching upon their interests, and how they might eliminate Him to block this uncomfortable new Teacher, new era, and new value system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these two works displayed by Jesus were not merely meant to show that disciples may eat when hungry on the Sabbath, nor merely to highlight the healing of a long-standing illness. Far more than that, He was proclaiming the Gospel, freedom, and values of the Kingdom of God, declaring: &#8220;That Kingdom has begun! It has arrived before you, and we must live according to its values!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord, who came to this earth as the true King\u2014the Son of Man, the Messiah prophesied long ago\u2014is now completing a new creation before us. For the fulfillment of that work, He walks the path of suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as God the Father created the heavens and the earth in six days and declared rest on the seventh day, so now the Lord of the Sabbath has come into a world that drifted from God&#8217;s embrace and was stained by sin. He clearly demonstrates before them that He will restore the true rest and true life promised by God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, we no longer look to the shadow of the &#8220;Sabbath,&#8221; for Jesus\u2014the King who fulfills true rest\u2014has come before us. When the reality arrives, the shadow is no longer needed. When the Master arrives, the steward steps aside, hands over the keys, and yields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has come to proclaim and open His era. To cling to the signpost that merely pointed to His coming, fussing over literal details and blocking His life-giving work\u2014there is no greater folly than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vital truth is that He is our true King and Lord, and His priority for us is clear: above all else, life is what matters. Saving and restoring life, embracing and welcoming people\u2014that is what is paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet what is important to us today? What are we holding onto as essential, and what standards are we following in our daily lives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord asks us today just as He asked them then: &#8220;Do you truly accept Me as the Lord of this Sabbath? Am I truly your King? Always and everywhere, are you prioritizing and focusing on what I desire\u2014the values of My Kingdom, the work of restoring and saving life?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What kind of King is the Lord? He is not a terrifying king standing with a drawn sword to punish and drive away sinners; He is the King who gave His very life on the cross to save those sinners! Do we truly serve Him as our Lord and King?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever seriously and fiercely wrestled with what it means to live with Him as your King\u2014wrestling intensely like the poet Yun Dong-ju in his Fukuoka prison cell? Have you applied that to your life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is the truly essential value for us today? What should you and I live for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As citizens belonging to the Kingdom of Jesus Christ\u2014the true Lord of the Sabbath who came before us\u2014may we not be builders of our own mini-kingdoms nor pursuers of our own empires, but people who embrace the weak and yield ourselves for the sake of His Kingdom.
