class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Paradigm of Paradox<\/strong>: <strong>Not My Confidence, But His Sovereignty<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Surface and the Hidden Tension<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, today, it seems we are living in an era of political excess. In fact, it is said that a truly peaceful reign is one where the people do not even know who is governing. However, for us, the moment we turn on the TV or internet media, it is entirely filled with political stories. Whenever people meet, they talk about politics. We have passed the last few years in such a situation where our nerves are constantly on edge over how politics is turning out. Therefore, it is absolutely clear that the era we are living in is not a so-called peaceful reign. Watching politics so sensitively, what have you felt? Looking at the characteristics of the political theater, what is it that politicians are best at? It is shaking hands. Yes, politicians are incredibly good at shaking hands. Actually, if you try it yourself, shaking hands is not an easy thing to do. And what else are politicians good at? My goodness, even with people they have never known in their entire lives, they greet them warmly as if they were lifelong friends. They even embrace them, and they are so remarkably skilled at pretending to be close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here is the thing. Everyone, these politicians pretend to be close in front, but is what we see on the surface everything? It is not. In front, they pretend to be extremely glad, pretend to be close, and pretend to reconcile, but behind the scenes, tension is tightly escalating. They show a bright smile in front, but behind the scenes, they are sharpening their swords. How common and rampant are such scenes in the political theater? That is what the worldly political theater is like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, everyone, even in the early ministry of Jesus, we can discover scenes where the appearance revealed in front and the tension and conflict escalating behind the scenes intersect with each other. Many people flock toward Jesus. It seems as if people are following Jesus and welcoming Him. But behind that, there are people who are casting sharp glares at Jesus and sharpening their swords in secret. Invisible tension is escalating, and conflict is gradually growing. Look at the first part of verse 17 in today&#8217;s text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Galilee\u2014Jesus had not even left Galilee yet, and Galilee is a rural area, a countryside village. To see a single young prophet teaching in that countryside village, not only people from various Galilean villages but also Pharisees from Judea and Jerusalem came. The Pharisees were the mainstream sect of Judaism at that time and acted as the religious leaders of the people. Pharisees, scribes, and teachers of the law\u2014such people came to watch Jesus. Why on earth did they come all that way? First, they did have some interest in Jesus, but in reality, they came to monitor and test Him. Why? Because the &#8220;kingdom of God&#8221; that Jesus was preaching was actually a kind of trademark that the Pharisees themselves had been claiming and putting forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t only Jesus who preached the kingdom of God; the Pharisees, in fact, were also people who preached the kingdom of God. So, in a way, Jesus was claiming what they had been claiming. However, as people began to flock to Jesus in droves, these leaders had no choice but to look into Jesus and become interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Conflicting Visions of the Kingdom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, what kind of country is the kingdom of God according to the Pharisees? To put it in one word, the Pharisees&#8217; kingdom of God is the restoration of a community that strictly observes the Law. It means living according to the Law so that the promise God gave them may be swiftly fulfilled. What is the promise given by God? In short, it is restoring David\u2019s kingship and reclaiming the glory of the nation of Israel. To do that, what must happen first? Judging the Gentiles who were oppressing Israel is the priority. They must be driven out. They believed that God would move to liberate His people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, they believed that what we must do to make that happen is to purify ourselves, remove unclean things from among us, and thoroughly observe the Law. Only then would God&#8217;s promise be fulfilled, and only then would the kingdom of God be established. These were the people who believed and asserted this\u2014the Pharisees. Think about it carefully. What they promised and what they said seems to have nothing particularly wrong with it. But if you think about it deeply, what does it mean? What is the purpose of their observing the Law? It is to reveal the fact that they are the chosen covenant people. And ultimately, for God&#8217;s promise to be fulfilled, the Gentiles living among them\u2014who in their eyes were unclean individuals\u2014must be driven out. In short, what they were claiming was, &#8220;Let us drive out and exclude those who are different from us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the time of Jesus, there were the Zealots. Those whom we call Zealots today were, in fact, the same kind of people as the Pharisees. They believed what the Pharisees believed, but why were they called Zealots? Their zeal was even more extraordinary than that of the Pharisees. They thought, <em>\u201cTo achieve the nation of the Jews that we desire, the nation where the Law is fulfilled, the nation of God&#8217;s covenant people, we must enforce it in a stronger, more aggressive way, even by using violence and armed force to carry out what we want.\u201d<\/em> In a movie I watched before, a character says, &#8220;Even singing hymns must be done revolutionarily!&#8221; Likewise, they were people who thought they had to bring about this kingdom of God revolutionarily. One faction of such Pharisees was called the Zealots. Such people exist even today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we well know, among Muslims in Islam, there are some who believe that they must carry out what they want even by using violence, and that this is the way to follow the will of God. It is not only Muslims who are like this. Looking closely, it seems there are people with thoughts not much different even among Christians today. It is deeply concerning that a significant number of Korean Christians even claim that any method, at times even violent methods, can be justified to enforce what we believe and think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, everyone, what is the vision of the kingdom of God that Jesus possesses? The Pharisees speak of the kingdom of God. The Zealots also speak of the kingdom of God. And Jesus also came to this earth and proclaimed the kingdom of God. Then, are they all the same kingdom of God? Is there no difference? No, that is not the case. It is completely different. We must know that although the kingdom they speak of and the kingdom Jesus proclaimed share the same name, in reality, their essence and values are entirely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I have just mentioned, the kingdom they claim is ultimately a kingdom of exclusion and hatred. It is a kingdom where they drive out those who are different from them, the Gentiles, and rule over them. Ultimately, the kingdom they claim is not the kingdom of God, but their own kingdom, their own empire. However, everyone, the kingdom Jesus proclaimed is not like that. What we continuously confirm through the Gospel of Luke is precisely the essence of the kingdom of Jesus Christ, which is not like that. The kingdom of God, the kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed, was the proclamation of the Father&#8217;s love that embraces all sinners and all Gentiles through grace. If you believe this, say Amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">True Faith: Trusting His Sovereignty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus proclaimed the kingdom of God, which they had claimed as if it were their exclusive patent, and by doing so, He revealed what the true essence and value of the kingdom of God were. People were drawn to Jesus&#8217; words and the power He displayed, and they were coming before Him. Consequently, these Pharisees could not help but feel anxious. <em>&#8220;Look, that man is talking using our exclusive patent, our trademark, but looking closely, it seems vastly different from what we have believed so far. We watched to see if he was on our side, but in truth, he seems entirely different. Yet, people are gathering around that young man.&#8221;<\/em> Therefore, they had no choice but to be tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the people were paying attention to was not merely words, but the working power. As that working power was displayed before them, they came before the gospel of the kingdom of God, which Jesus proclaimed, with trust and faith. Look at the latter part of verse 17:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;And the power of the Lord was with him to heal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, &#8216;the Lord&#8217; refers to Yahweh God. The power of God the Father, the power of the Holy Spirit to heal diseases, was with Jesus. And as people witnessed that accompanying work, they came flocking out. However, even when they flocked out, because too many people gathered, the person who genuinely needed that power, the one who truly needed it, could not approach Jesus. A paralytic\u2014he is a person who cannot even stand up and walk. But since a situation arose where he could not even go before Jesus, the people with him carried him on a bed, yet even these friends could not approach Jesus. The place was packed with people. So, what do they do? Carrying the bed, they went up on the roof, removed the tiles from the roof, made an opening, and let this man down through the roof right in front of Jesus. What an extraordinary sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus watched that scene and spoke clearly: &#8220;Your faith has saved this man.&#8221; That is right. What Jesus saw is their faith. They trusted the kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed. They believed in the power of that kingdom of God. Therefore, they firmly believed that if they could just go before Jesus, before Jesus who proclaims that kingdom of God, He would surely restore this man. Why? Because the kingdom of God that Jesus proclaimed was not a kingdom for those who possessed qualifications. It was a proclamation of God\u2019s grace, God\u2019s forgiveness, and God\u2019s restoration given freely as a gift for those who had absolutely no qualifications\u2014the blind, the sick, the poor, the captives, and the oppressed. Therefore, trusting that power of Jesus and believing in the grace of the kingdom of God He proclaimed, they went before Him by faith. <em>\u201cIf we can just bring him before Him by any means, He will heal him.\u201d<\/em> They had trust in the sovereign power of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, faith is exactly like this. Some people confuse faith with self-confidence in themselves. There is a tendency to think that the confidence of &#8220;I can do everything, I can do anything&#8221; is faith. But everyone, do we possess such confidence? Look at yourselves. Are you a being who is so trustworthy? Is there even a single condition or ground through which such a thing could happen because of you? No, it is not. When we honestly look into ourselves and see how weak and how powerless we are, there is absolutely no ground for such confidence to arise within us. Therefore, everyone, faith is not that kind of self-confidence. Faith is not the confidence that <em>I<\/em> can do it, but rather, please believe that it is trust in His will and trust in His sovereignty, confession that <em>&#8220;He will be able to do it. If it is His will, it will be accomplished.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In verse 20 of today&#8217;s text, what did Jesus see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;And when he saw their faith, he said, &#8216;Man, your sins are forgiven you.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This later becomes the seed of conflict and trouble. Everyone, let us talk about that in a moment. Look closely. An astonishing work unfolds before their eyes, yet different reactions appear even when looking at the exact same work. This is fascinating, isn&#8217;t it? Everyone, different reactions occur even when hearing the exact same words. The work unfolded before their eyes is identical. Clearly, the exact same work is shown, but the reactions of the people are vastly different. Some people say Amen, glorify God, and receive and enjoy that gift of grace, while other people add doubt and condemnation with bizarre thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But who are those &#8216;other people&#8217;? Are they people who originally lacked faith? Are they atheists? Are they people who do not attend church? No. Look at verse 21:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, &#8216;Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, is their thought right or wrong? It is right. Only God alone has the authority to forgive sins. Amen. That is a correct statement. They learned properly. Then, what is the problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hardness of Heart and the Breaking of Systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, in chapter 5, section 6 of the Westminster Confession of Faith, a statement like this appears. Regarding those who obstruct the kingdom of Jesus Christ and those who fail to accept that grace, the Confession teaches us the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;they are hardened even under those means which God useth for the softening of others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In beholding the grace of Jesus Christ and the astonishing work of the kingdom of God, those who do not accept it but obstruct it have no choice but to have their hearts hardened even while looking at them, even under the means of grace, those tools of grace that God uses to soften the hearts of others. Just like the hardened heart of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, who did not follow the will of God even while beholding the astonishing works of God because his heart became hardened, their hearts absolutely do not change before any kind of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, looking elsewhere in the Gospel of Luke, a rich man dies and falls into the fires of Hades, while a poor man, Lazarus, is embraced by father Abraham. This rich man makes a request, saying, &#8220;Please, please send Lazarus to my family so he can tell them not to come here.&#8221; &#8220;No. No. They have the prophets already, and they have the word of God already.&#8221; This means that for people who have resolved not to accept no matter what, even if someone like Lazarus who died goes and speaks to them, they will not listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their thinking was not wrong. They learned the correct doctrine. &#8220;That&#8217;s right, only God can forgive sins.&#8221; Their thinking was tightly restricted within the boundaries of the institutions and doctrines permitted and given to them. There were means of forgiveness given to them. There was the temple. There were sacrifices offered in the temple. Offering those sacrifices was not done at just any time either; the feasts were fixed. Especially once a year on the Great Day of Atonement, the high priest would take a sacrificial animal, carry the blood of that sacrifice inside the altar, and sprinkle that blood on the mercy seat\u2014the mercy seat inside the Most Holy Place\u2014only then could the trumpet of atonement be blown. Even that was not perfect, so the same work was repeated every year. Only then could it be declared that God could forgive sins, that He had forgiven them. Moreover, that declaration could only come through the mouth of the priest, the high priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, what they were holding onto was that the channel given to them and the right given to them must be preserved. However, Jesus bypassed that entire process and established Himself at the center of that authority. And He declares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Seeing your faith&#8230; not anything else, but seeing your faith, I declare: your sins are forgiven you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If it is according to these words that Jesus is claiming right now, everyone, what is the problem? The temple they held onto so dearly and valued so preciously, the sacrificial system that existed there, the feasts, the offices, the authority, the tradition\u2014all of those things become unnecessary. All of those things become unnecessary, and every single person who stands by faith before Jesus comes to receive the grace of the forgiveness of sins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What an astonishing grace this is! You feel thankful for this proclamation of grace, don&#8217;t you? However, for the people who thought all of those things belonged to them, they were in big trouble. <em>&#8220;Oh no, this is a crisis. If it is according to the words of that Jesus, everything we were holding onto becomes completely useless, so this is a serious situation.&#8221;<\/em> That&#8217;s right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus\u2019 Sovereign Declaration and the Son of Man<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, the issue is the term &#8216;the Son of Man&#8217; claimed by Jesus and what is called &#8216;the authority of the Son of Man.&#8217; When tension escalates and people look with suspicious eyes, what do they do in the political theater? They engage in a push-and-pull. This political theater is somewhat similar to dating. Everyone, you have experienced dating, right? Why are you acting as if you have never dated? You have dated, haven&#8217;t you? What is the most important thing when dating? Don&#8217;t you know? How did you date? Let me teach you the most important thing when dating: &#8216;Mil-dang&#8217; (push-and-pull).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, why are you acting like it&#8217;s someone else&#8217;s story? When dating, pushing and pulling is important. But it is not only when dating; it is also the case when doing politics. Pushing and pulling\u2014the opponent begins to be on guard against me. <em>&#8220;That person is likely to become my competitor. Oh, that person is likely to become the next presidential candidate?&#8221;<\/em> Then they glare and sharpen their swords behind the scenes to catch even a single flaw. Then what must one do? If it is a person sensitive to politics, someone with political sense, they hide their identity so that people do not doubt, do not be on guard, and release their tension. They lay it down. Even if they have intentions for the next presidential election, they act as if they have no intention at all, saying, &#8220;I have no thoughts. I am not capable of being such a person.&#8221; They must do that. Yes. That is the technique of pushing and pulling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what did Jesus do? Right now, while suspicious eyes are multiplying toward Jesus and tension is escalating, look at verses 22 and 23. Jesus perceived their thoughts; He was not ignorant of them. He was not a person completely lacking social cues. Perceiving their thoughts, He answered them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Why do you question in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, &#8216;Your sins are forgiven you,&#8217; or to say, &#8216;Rise and walk&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, what is He saying? &#8220;I could easily say &#8216;Rise and walk,&#8217; but I deliberately, intentionally chose not to do so and instead proclaimed &#8216;Your sins are forgiven you.'&#8221; This does not mean &#8220;I spoke wrongly, I made a mistake.&#8221; It would barely be enough to ease their suspicious eyes even if He had just said, &#8220;It means &#8216;Rise and walk,'&#8221; but Jesus openly said, &#8220;I did it on purpose, I intentionally said your sins are forgiven.&#8221; What is the intention that Jesus is trying to reveal without hiding right now? Everyone, why does He reveal that intention without hiding? Does that help politically? Not at all. In my view, Jesus is significantly lacking in political sense, and in modern political terms, He is someone who is not good at conflict management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And now, He uses a truly irreversible, serious expression. What is that? It is the first part of verse 24:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8216;the Son of Man,&#8217; and this statement that He possesses the authority to forgive sins that belonged to the Son of Man\u2014this is the very crucial point where He definitively falls out of their favor and where conflict explodes with them. Why is that? The origin of this term &#8216;the Son of Man&#8217; is important. This is not a statement Jesus made simply meaning &#8220;the son of a human, I am human too,&#8221; but it is a statement that has a context. Where does this statement appear? This term &#8216;the Son of Man,&#8217; &#8216;the son of a human&#8217;\u2014which in the Greek original Bible is <em>&#8216;ho huios tou anthropou&#8217;<\/em> and is translated literally into English as &#8216;The Son of Man&#8217; using the definite article\u2014is actually an expression that appears in chapter 7 of the Old Testament Book of Daniel. There, &#8216;one like a son of man,&#8217; &#8216;The Son of Man&#8217; appears, and He is the one who approaches before God and is granted all authority to rule the world. In one word, who is He? He is the Messiah. How does the prophecy concerning that Messiah appear in Daniel chapter 7? Let us read Daniel 7:13 and 14 together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, two figures appear. First, who is the &#8216;Ancient of Days&#8217;? It is God. God\u2014when referencing God in the Bible, the One who was yesterday, is today, and will be tomorrow, that One, the &#8216;Ancient of Days,&#8217; is God the Father. Then, who is the &#8216;one like a son of man&#8217; presented before that God the Father? Who is the &#8216;one like a son of man&#8217; who comes with the clouds of heaven and is presented before God? He is precisely the Messiah through whom God will restore His kingdom, the anointed &#8216;Son of Man.&#8217; We continue reading verse 14:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what matters. Before that God the Father, that Messiah, the one like a son of man, was presented, but who are those who serve Him? Everyone, this is crucial. Naturally, it must be the Jews, naturally it is only the people of Israel, right? That is not the case. This is what matters. <em>&#8220;That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him.&#8221;<\/em> Therefore, are those who believe in and serve that Messiah, those who become His people under the grace of the Messiah, only the Jews? Is it only the people of Israel? It is not. <em>&#8220;That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed,&#8221;<\/em> the prophet Daniel spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the era of Jesus, to the Jews, this &#8216;Son of Man&#8217; spoken of by the prophet Daniel pointed directly to the Messiah. They all understood that after Israel&#8217;s long suffering, God would finally restore the kingdom of God through that Messiah. Yet, right now, Jesus is proclaiming that He Himself is that very Son of Man, the Son of Man mentioned in the Book of Daniel\u2014meaning that the Messiah who would establish the kingdom of God through Himself after Israel&#8217;s suffering is none other than Himself, and that the authority given to that Messiah belongs precisely to Him. He is stating that He will make them know that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins. He spoke it openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why does Jesus say such things? Jesus is teaching them right now what the true kingdom of God is like. Through His words and actions, Jesus was showing the essence and value of the true kingdom of God\u2014whereas they had understood it in their own way and according to their own words, believing and asserting that the kingdom of God was a kingdom where they would be elevated, their power restored, their enemies driven out, and they themselves exalted. Now, He is speaking about the true kingdom of God, not the kingdom of God that has been camouflaged as their own kingdom, but the true kingdom of God that God had spoken of and promised through the prophets\u2014its essence, its value, and how it is accomplished. Jesus is clearly revealing the difference in what the Messiah they longed for truly accomplishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important for us to know this as well. It is not merely a vague expectation of, <em>\u201cHe will fulfill what we believe, what we know, and what we long for,\u201d<\/em> but we must know what kind of kingdom the kingdom of God Jesus proclaimed truly is, and how that kingdom is accomplished. His kingdom is not a kingdom that condemns and excludes the sick as sinners. While many people were clicking their tongues toward the sick, saying, &#8220;That person must have sinned. He became like that because of his own sin. He became like that because of his parents&#8217; sin,&#8221; the Lord welcomed them, accepted them, touched them, and declared that their sins were forgiven. He is not someone who judges, annihilates, tramples, and drives out even the Gentiles. Just as the prophet Daniel said, He was the one who causes all peoples, nations, and languages to serve Him, bringing them out to the place of becoming His people through His grace. That is the core and essence of the kingdom of God He proclaimed. The Lord is clearly declaring right now that the authority of the Son of Man belongs to Himself. He did not mince words. Therefore, everyone, the Lord is clearly displaying before them what kind of kingdom is the true kingdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at the latter part of verse 24 through verse 25:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;he said to the man who was paralyzed\u2014&#8217;I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.&#8217; And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, glorifying God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What an astonishing scene this is! Everyone, what we must pay attention to here is not merely focusing on the healing of the disease, the physical cure that the paralytic was healed. What matters is that within the statement Jesus made while healing him, and within what Jesus wanted to claim and reveal through it, tremendous content is included. It is the kingdom of God. He is showing what kind of kingdom the kingdom of God is and for whom it exists. He is telling us to look at the true kingdom of God, the works that the Son of Man, the one possessing that authority, accomplishes among us upon His arrival. He is saying that those works are unfolding right before our eyes, that they have been accomplished. What kind of works are they?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous laws, rituals, authority systems, forms, systems, and offices\u2014through which people had barely tasted a mere shadow, which could only lead to a continuous, burning thirst\u2014those religious things are now being perfectly, actually, and as a whole reality accomplished before them through this one person. Before that astonishing work of God, the person who received that grace glorifies God. Naturally. Having received this grace, how could he not glorify God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grace is Free: Self-Confidence vs. Divine Sovereignty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But everyone, think about it carefully. Did the faith about which Jesus said, &#8220;Your faith has saved you,&#8221; belong to this man? Was it this paralytic who possessed that faith? It was not. In truth, the people who carried this man tied to a bed and came forward with that faith are someone else. The people who tore open the tiles of the roof and let him down are someone else. Therefore, even that faith by which it is said this man received grace was not this man&#8217;s own faith. Consequently, literally regarding the grace of the forgiveness of sins that this man received, can he even say, &#8220;He gave it to me because <em>I<\/em> believed&#8221;? He cannot. He absolutely cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, how do we think about grace? Usually, while saying, &#8220;We were saved by grace, we were saved by faith,&#8221; don&#8217;t we think like this: &#8220;Still, because <em>I<\/em> believed. Look, that person did not believe, but since I believed, I am better than that person who did not believe, aren&#8217;t I?&#8221; Everyone, you all think that way, don&#8217;t you? &#8220;Yes, because I am somehow better, I was saved.&#8221; That is precisely spiritual pride. That is a statement made because one does not know what grace is. True grace\u2014look at this paralytic. Even the faith that brought him before Jesus was not his own faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, is there anyone here who came out before Jesus for the first time relying on their own faith? &#8220;From the very beginning, my faith was so good that I sought out the church.&#8221; If there is such a person, please raise your hand. There will barely be anyone. Yes. Some people came reluctantly because their wives pestered them, some people followed their parents from birth, and some people just happened to come by chance because they heard something was happening at the church. It was truly not my faith, but God overwhelmingly led us. Please believe that our coming before that grace is also not our merit, but God&#8217;s grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gospel of Luke continuously reveals that absolute grace. The hymns of those who received that grace ring out. Such was the song of Zechariah, the father of John, and such was the song of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The people who continuously appear in the Gospel of Luke are unqualified people, unqualified people. However, everyone, please believe the fact that God&#8217;s grace is precisely given to them, the unqualified people. Those unqualified individuals could behold the truly astonishing work of God. The one who was startled and fell over at that astonishing work was not only that single healed paralytic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us read the final verse of today&#8217;s text together:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, &#8216;We have seen extraordinary things today.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have seen extraordinary things&#8221;\u2014this word in Greek is <em>&#8216;paradoxa.&#8217;<\/em> You have heard it somewhere many times, haven&#8217;t you? <em>Paradoxa<\/em>\u2014there is a similar word in English: &#8216;paradox.&#8217; It came precisely from this word. What does it mean? Looking in an English dictionary, a &#8216;paradox&#8217; refers to things that appear contradictory but are actually true\u2014such an assertion, such a doctrine, such a theory is called a paradox. It is the same in Greek. When things that people normally, according to common sense, would not expect unfold before our eyes, yet produce an unexpected, astonishing result, that is when it is called <em>&#8216;paradoxa,&#8217;<\/em> <em>&#8216;paradoxa.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s right. Everyone, the work of God&#8217;s grace operates right before us in that manner\u2014as a paradox, paradoxically. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law are the mainstream people of the day. They are the most cultured individuals possessing the common sense of the era. Yet, a contradictory event that can never be accepted from their perspective takes place right before them. <em>&#8220;A thing that only God alone can declare is being declared by that man named Jesus? That countryside teacher from Nazareth of Galilee is the Messiah we have been waiting for?&#8221;<\/em> However, such things that they cannot accept truly take place within God&#8217;s grace. The Gentiles whom they cannot accept are received into the bosom of God, and the sick and sinners whom they consider unclean and cannot approach touch the hand of the one who is the Son of God, the Messiah, and experience a history of healing and restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like the story concerning the Son of Man in the Book of Daniel\u2014even though they surely would have believed that statement of the prophet was the truth, in reality, they do not fully accept the words of that prophet. Although God had already clearly shown through the prophet that vision where all nations and all languages of Gentiles would serve that Messiah together, they failed to see that vision. They still sought to establish hatred, exclusion, discrimination, and their own empire, their own nation. They firmly believed and claimed that this was the kingdom of God and that this was the will of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the life of Jesus unfolded a completely new history before them, entirely different from their expectations. We must be able to clearly behold the essence and value of that other kingdom displayed by Jesus, and the process through which that kingdom is accomplished. Only then are we people who believe in Jesus. Only then do we know the gospel. If we do not know how to behold that different reality, we might not be grasping the gospel at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The true kingdom of God, His kingdom that overturns worldly common sense and fixed ideas, a kingdom where His value and His righteousness are proclaimed, achieved, and received solely by His grace\u2014a kingdom where not only are all unqualified individuals accepted, but a history of salvation and transformation takes place. A kingdom made to be perfectly accomplished not through His sword, but solely through His cross of love and forgiveness\u2014that cross which they regarded as a symbol of God&#8217;s curse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Proclamation of &#8216;Today&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, what I want to emphasize to you is that Luke is stressing the word &#8216;today.&#8217; Today. Today. Just as when Jesus first began His public ministry in the synagogue at Nazareth, after reading Isaiah chapter 61, He said, &#8220;Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing,&#8221; today, that extraordinary work has unfolded before us. The fact that God sent His Son Jesus to this earth to proclaim and reveal that astonishing history of the kingdom of God\u2014that is precisely &#8216;today.&#8217; And because it is &#8216;today&#8217; that the history of grace, life, healing, and restoration proclaimed by Jesus is accomplished within us through God the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of that Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must not think of this merely as a vague event that happened 2,000 years ago, somewhere in the past. You must not think of this merely as an event that will be accomplished somewhere in the distant future. Please believe that the kingdom of God came among us through Jesus today, and that the kingdom of God that came upon this earth is operating today through the lives of you and me who are living together with the Spirit of Jesus, even in this land where we have been sent. Today, the kingdom of God proclaimed by Jesus is being accomplished and expanding among us. Today, we are living while enjoying that grace of the kingdom of God within our lives and within all our relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before His grace, which displays that astonishing work today, if we come out and once again put forward our own common sense, our fixed ideas, our judgments, our factions, our traditions, and our vested interests as more important\u2014just as those Pharisees did\u2014far from accepting the grace and that astonishing work proclaimed by Jesus with an Amen, far from trusting, obeying, and being healed by faith, we will have no choice but to become a force that criticizes, blames, condemns, doubts, and resists that kingdom of Jesus, just like them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, you must be able to see how their religion, the religion of those Pharisees, differs from our attitude today. You must know how to distinguish that. Unless we distinguish that and stand before the Lord&#8217;s grace in a manner different from them, we too have no choice but to perish just like them. Coming out before the Lord&#8217;s grace today, I urge you to lay down all your kingdoms of common sense, fixed ideas, and vested interests, lay down all that desire to establish your own empire, and go out before Him by faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do so, our helpless selves, our selves who have no hope of healing, and even the life of that dying person carried on our shoulders\u2014I believe that before the work of His grace, solely by His power, an astonishing history of grace that revives and restores will take place among us, within our lives, and among all our neighbors through us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"pvc_clear\"><\/div><p id=\"pvc_stats_10753\" class=\"pvc_stats all  \" data-element-id=\"10753\"
