class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reality of Isolation: Then and Now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, think back to 2,000 years ago. Imagine a person living during the time of Jesus\u2019 ministry on this earth who contracted a highly contagious disease. It is just like the coronavirus we all experienced firsthand. Imagine that his life was completely devastated by such a disease. His entire body is crawling with germs. It might have been a highly infectious virus, though, of course, people at that time lacked the ability to distinguish between viruses and general bacteria. Anyway, knowing only that being close to him could transmit the disease, he becomes someone everyone avoids and shuns. Consequently, he naturally had to be quarantined from the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know from experience how difficult and terrifying social isolation can be, don&#8217;t we? Do you remember when a positive COVID-19 result popped up in your household, and you told someone, &#8220;Go into that room,&#8221; closed the door, and just delivered their meals to them? Yes, people back then did the same thing. Except, back then, they weren&#8217;t quarantined inside a house; they were driven out of the village entirely. They had to go outside the city walls. Of course, there were times when family members prepared food for them, but even the family would place the food down from afar, wave their hands, and probably shout, &#8220;Hey, hey, hey! Don&#8217;t come any closer! Don&#8217;t come! Take it from there!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I, too, have experienced that kind of life, and it brings tears to my eyes. When the pandemic was at its peak, the United States, where I was ministering, was much more severe and dangerous than South Korea, where you were living. Because of that, the elderly members and anyone with a weak immune system could not even dream of coming to church for months. It was a critical situation. There were so many people who could not even step outside their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I took turns visiting the congregants. My wife and I couldn&#8217;t even meet them face-to-face. We would just go in front of their houses. In America, houses are detached, so there is a front yard by the roadside, and passing through that yard leads to the front door. There are no fences in front of the houses; Americans do not put up fences in the front. We drove from house to house, prepared small visitation gifts, hung them on the doorknobs, and quickly backed away to our car to call them. &#8220;Deacon! Exhorter!&#8221; Only then would they crack the door open, step out, and wave like this. We couldn&#8217;t get close. They would take the gift hanging on the doorknob and shed tears. And standing by the car, keeping my distance, I would pray over the phone. We would weep and pray together, and then they would go back inside. Experiencing that season for months, when I finally saw the faces of the congregants after several months, I wondered, <em>\u201cOh, has that person aged that much?\u201d<\/em> Their hair had turned white in the time I hadn&#8217;t seen them, and their faces were wrinkled. I could guess how lonely and difficult those times of isolation had been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a patient whom no one can approach because of such isolation. Then one day, he appears in the middle of the village and shouts, &#8220;Everyone, I have been healed!&#8221; &#8220;How were you healed?&#8221; &#8220;That teacher named Jesus healed me.&#8221; If that happened, could you believe it? Could you welcome that person with open arms? Where is the evidence? Yes, that is the problem. Now, let us delve a little deeper into this story today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Meaning of &#8216;Unclean&#8217; and the Biblical Approach to Pandemic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At that time, a person with an infectious disease was described as &#8216;unclean.&#8217; In English, it means not clean. This word &#8216;unclean&#8217; carries many different meanings. Of course, it has a medical and hygienic meaning. It also carries a religious and ritual meaning. Furthermore, a social meaning and ethical judgment are embedded within it. In any case, this person is unclean. Verse 12 says he was &#8220;a man full of leprosy.&#8221; Leprosy\u2014according to the Law, a leper cannot dwell with God&#8217;s people. They are expelled from their camp. When Israel encamped in the wilderness and moved as a camp, what would happen if an infectious disease broke out within it? Because an infectious disease patient puts not only themselves but also others at risk, there is no other way but to isolate them. Did they have medicine at that time? What did they have? Ultimately, they had to be quarantined from the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the same today, isn&#8217;t it? We are the same. If an infectious disease for which no medicine yet exists goes around, the best method is to isolate. It is to not gather together. And that is biblical. When the pandemic was rampant and medicine had not yet come out, some people said, &#8220;We must worship until the end. We must gather to worship. Why are you stopping us from gathering? This is an infringement on religious freedom. Let&#8217;s risk our lives to gather and worship.&#8221; There were people who said that. But think about it carefully. Is that biblical? Does the Bible truly say that? The Bible does not tell us to do that. According to the Bible, to protect the community and to protect the lives of their neighbors, it is right for them to be isolated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word translated as &#8216;leprosy&#8217; in the Bible\u2014we do not know for certain if it is exactly the same as modern leprosy, which is medically termed Hansen&#8217;s disease. Especially regarding the leprosy found in the Old Testament, from a medical standpoint, the disease we call Hansen&#8217;s disease today had not yet broken out or spread to the Palestine region during the Old Testament era. Therefore, we cannot know precisely whether that disease is this exact disease, but what is clear is that the Old Testament uses the term &#8216;tzaraat&#8217;\u2014translated as leprosy\u2014to collectively refer to infectious skin diseases. In Leviticus chapters 13 and 14, even mold appearing on the walls of a house is expressed as leprosy because it spreads and infects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The important thing is that if you contract this kind of disease, you cannot live a public life. You cannot be with your neighbors. Naturally, you cannot attend worship. You must not attend public worship. If a patient with an infectious skin disease at that time was zealous in worship and thought, <em>\u201cEven if I have to risk my life, I must not miss public worship,\u201d<\/em> and attended worship at the temple, what would happen? A leper attended temple worship. Would the priests and the people at the temple say, &#8220;Wow, what great faith! Excellent!&#8221; and praise him? That person would probably have been stoned to death. Why? Because that was the only way to protect the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leviticus 13:45\u201346 states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? So everyone else would know he is a leper. So people could see at a glance that he is someone they must not approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;and he shall cover his upper lip&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, we practiced how to wear masks properly during this pandemic, right? It is exactly the same as wearing a mask. Covering his upper lip, what should he cry out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;and cry out, &#8216;Unclean, unclean.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He cries out about himself, &#8220;Unclean, I am an unclean person.&#8221; Everyone, how miserable is this? Toward oneself, one must cry out, &#8220;I am a filthy person. I am not clean. If you come near me, you will be in big trouble.&#8221; Only then will people not come near. Only then can he protect the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But everyone, if someone lives like this, what happens to that person? Their self-esteem is destroyed. Self-esteem\u2014everyone, what is the hardest thing in our lives? It is when our self-esteem is destroyed. When your self-respect crumbles, how can you live? For how long? For as long as he has the disease, he must always cry out that he is unclean, unclean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease. He is unclean. He shall dwell alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a person who could not be together within the community of God&#8217;s people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sovereign Authority of Jesus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he appeared. He stood before Jesus. Why? How did he find such a courageous heart? What Jesus was proclaiming was the year of the Lord&#8217;s favor. Before Jesus, who proclaims God&#8217;s day of forgiveness and grace, he stood with a definite faith. What is that faith?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAh, that teacher Jesus, the grace of God that he proclaims\u2014for whom is that grace?\u201d<\/em> Listening carefully, Jesus proclaimed that it was for the sick, the blind, the captives, and the oppressed. <em>\u201cThat&#8217;s it. That grace is for someone like me. This Jesus who proclaims God&#8217;s grace for someone like me\u2014He is truly the one who can make me clean.\u201d<\/em> With that faith, he went out before Jesus. He confesses to Jesus, &#8220;Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, it is impossible for a leper to voluntarily approach a healthy person. Why? What did I say would happen if he did? He would be stoned to death. Therefore, he was a person who should have hidden himself, kept his distance, and fled, saying, &#8220;Do not come close, do not come close. I am a filthy person.&#8221; Yet, what kind of faith is this? Coming out before Jesus on his own accord, he confesses, &#8220;If the Lord wills, you can make me clean.&#8221; He is saying that the Lord has that right. The Lord can do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What is even more astonishing than this absurd action and speech is that Jesus goes along with it. Look at how He responds. In verse 13:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I will; be clean.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In English, it is translated as &#8220;I am willing, He said, Be clean.&#8221; This could have been done in one sentence. If He said, &#8220;I want you to be clean,&#8221; that would finish the sentence, but He intentionally splits this single sentence into two. &#8220;I am willing&#8221;\u2014this is not an expression used in everyday conversation. He could have just said, &#8220;You will be clean,&#8221; but He says, &#8220;I am willing,&#8221; meaning, &#8220;My will is there. I am willing it right now.&#8221; Why? It is a rhetorical method to reveal and proclaim His authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then, &#8220;Be clean.&#8221; If I were the one translating the Korean Bible, I would have translated it as a commanding declaration. Yes, this expression is truly proclamatory. &#8220;Be clean.&#8221; Hermeneutical scholars use the term &#8216;sovereign expression&#8217; (plenipotentiary expression) for this style of speech and rhetorical method. What is a sovereign expression? Everyone, you have heard the term &#8216;ambassador plenipotentiary,&#8217; right? It means all power, authority, and qualifications rest upon him. What authority rests in His hands? The authority to make me clean\u2014He is proclaiming that this authority depends on His hand. He is the one who possesses such power and qualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This style of expression does not appear only in the Gospel of Luke. It is expressed in the exact same way across the Synoptic Gospels\u2014in Matthew and Mark as well. Why does He use this method? What exactly is the authority that Jesus possesses? It is to proclaim that the authority to forgive sins\u2014what authority?\u2014the authority to forgive sins belongs to Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People at that time thought that those afflicted with such fatal diseases were sinners. &#8220;Why does that person get that disease instead of someone else? Why on earth did I catch this disease? It must be because I sinned against God.&#8221; Of course, Jesus does not accept the fact that they caught the disease because of sin. Regarding a man blind from birth, some people asked, &#8220;Why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sin or his parents&#8217; sin?&#8221; What did Jesus say? It was neither this man&#8217;s sin nor his parents&#8217; sin, but it happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. He spoke thus. Therefore, Jesus clearly stated that a person&#8217;s fatal illness or disability does not originate from their sin. He does not believe that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, people at that time believed so. Therefore, toward these sick individuals, the people of that day condemned them, saying, &#8220;You are a sinner, a sinner! That is a sinner who cannot be with us. Drive the sinner out! Stone the sinner!&#8221; The Lord speaks before them, &#8220;I will; be clean.&#8221; If I will, you become clean. That means since the authority to forgive sins belongs to Me, you will be free from all that condemnation from now on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, Luke 5:24 states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Where lies the true intention of Jesus in healing the disease and making him clean? It is a content that proclaims the fact that the authority to forgive sins belongs to Jesus Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">True Healing and the Power of Touch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In any case, the Lord wants him to be made clean. As Jesus has already proclaimed, the year of the Lord&#8217;s favor has been announced, and as I mentioned last week, it is the proclamation of the restoration of their lives\u2014where the poor, the blind, the bound, and the captives are accepted and welcomed as God&#8217;s people within God&#8217;s grace and forgiveness, the Lord&#8217;s favor. Proclaiming that grace, the Lord made this man full of leprosy clean. He declared him clean, and it became so just as the Lord had proclaimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this event, what we must know is Jesus&#8217; true intention\u2014we need to understand it more deeply. To see the Lord&#8217;s intention, we must look at His actions afterward. In verse 14, we see that Jesus charged him. He was made clean. He was healed. After that happened, what did He say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;and he charged him to tell no one&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, isn&#8217;t this somewhat difficult to understand? Shouldn&#8217;t it be the exact opposite? Since Jesus began to preach the kingdom of God, and if Jesus is to be enthroned as King among the people, shouldn&#8217;t He spread the word about what He did? Shouldn&#8217;t He do some public relations and brag about it? Then people would flock to Him, and when they flock, Jesus could proclaim the kingdom of God to them, making it much easier to fulfill His mission, wouldn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet Jesus charges him and tells him not to speak, not to let it be known. Regarding this word &#8216;charged,&#8217; some people think, &#8220;Oh, even though He said don&#8217;t talk about it, He meant for him to go ahead and talk about it.&#8221; My goodness, it&#8217;s like a deacon in our church whose husband gifted her a one-carat diamond ring. She comes to me wearing it and says, &#8220;Don&#8217;t tell people about this. My husband gave it to me as a wedding anniversary gift. Keep it to yourself.&#8221; If she says that, does she really mean don&#8217;t talk about it? No, no. When this deacon tells Deacon Kim, she already wants Deacon Kim to spread the rumor because she would look superficial if she bragged about it herself. She can&#8217;t say it, but she wishes the other deacon would spread the word, isn&#8217;t that right? Yes. On the outside, she says don&#8217;t talk about it, but on the inside, she wants people to talk about it. Did Jesus use the word with that kind of intent? No, it is not. No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking up the word &#8216;charged&#8217; in the original Greek text, the dictionary shows it can be translated as &#8216;sternly warned&#8217; or, in severe cases, &#8216;rebuked&#8217; or &#8216;scolded.&#8217; Therefore, this statement does not mean He inwardly hoped it would be rumored while outwardly telling him not to speak. The important question is, why did He heal him then? Yes, Jesus&#8217; intention in healing him was not to make a name for Himself, nor to receive recognition from people, but it was an act done within the history of proclaiming the year of the Lord&#8217;s favor\u2014wishing for that soul, for his life, to be restored. Of course, despite this, the report concerning Jesus spread all the more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, looking at what Jesus said next, we can see where His true intention lies. Look at the latter part of verse 14:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;but go and show yourself to the priest&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not mean to quietly go to the priest and tell him who healed him. The reason He tells him to show his body to the priest is that it is the official procedure to be certified as healed through the priest. Why? Because the Law mandates it. In the Law, a person who had an infectious disease and was isolated could potentially get well, right? Of course, there was no medicine. More people probably died while isolated there. However, sometimes there were people who were cured among them. If so, they cannot continue to live in isolation while being cured. That is why they show themselves to the priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens if he approaches just anyone else? Would people see him and say, &#8220;You are completely healed! Hallelujah!&#8221; and welcome him? No. Before he can even get close, he would be stoned to death. Therefore, there must be someone who looks into him, takes that risk, verifies him, and if he is cured and completely well, welcomes him back. Who is the person who must perform that fearful and dangerous role? The priest does it. The man of God does it. That is why Jesus tells that man to go to the priest. If you were the priest, what would you do? &#8220;Why do I have to do such a thing? Why do I have to take on that role?&#8221; Why? Because he is the priest, the man of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus&#8217; intention was to heal that person. Jesus wanted a complete healing to take place. A complete healing means not merely the healing of the physical illness, but that he gains total healing mentally, personally, and socially, thereby restoring a whole life. The Lord desired for this man to be reinstated as a fully recognized member of his family, village, and community. For the completion of that healing, so that he might be received into the community as God&#8217;s people\u2014that is what the Lord&#8217;s command means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The core of this story is not the law, procedure, or command to go to the priest, but Jesus&#8217; action filled with sincerity; that is what matters. So that he could be fully accepted, so that he could live together in wholeness, Jesus accepts him, approaches him first, and looking at today&#8217;s text, He stretched out His hand and did what? Touched him? Shall we look? Look at verse 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, &#8216;I will; be clean.&#8217; And immediately the leprosy left him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew, Mark, and Luke all describe this scene in a very specific, identical manner. Jesus did not just speak with words; He laid His hand on him. While doing so, He said, &#8220;I will; be clean,&#8221; and immediately the leprosy left him. Is Jesus made of iron? Is that act not dangerous for Jesus? Just seeing Jesus standing with him, people could have thrown stones at Jesus. Furthermore, if Jesus touched the body of an unclean person, Jesus Himself would become unclean and could be driven out together. The Lord is performing such a tremendous act right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, everyone, humans cannot touch a filthy person out of fear that they themselves will become dirty. They cannot stand with a sinner out of fear that they themselves will become a sinner. That is the limitation of human religious people. That is the limitation of legalists. Yet, Jesus not only touched this man, but He came to this earth Himself and became a friend of tax collectors and sinners, and He is the Son of God who was baptized along with those sinners to save the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, Jesus, the Son of God, was baptized in the Jordan River. Why do you think Jesus was baptized? Think about it. Is there any reason for Jesus to receive baptism? Does Jesus need baptism? Baptism washes away sin, so why on earth does the sinless Jesus receive baptism? That is why John the Baptist is startled. &#8220;I ought to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?&#8221; What did Jesus say? &#8220;Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.&#8221; Standing together in the place of those sinners, receiving baptism with sinners, being regarded as a sinner like them, and paying the price for their sins\u2014He told him that this is the will of God and that this work must be fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord, who was baptized in that manner, proclaimed that grace to sinners and the sick, and now, He touched that unclean man with His own hand. Everyone, do you know the power of this touch? Have you experienced how precious, valuable, and great it is to touch, to have contact? Those who were quarantined in a corner of a room for even a few days during the pandemic know this. The times spent sitting and eating with family, holding hands, laughing, talking, and hugging\u2014how precious and valuable that daily life, that touch, and that contact are, and how happy they make us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Direction of Contagion Has Reversed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, looking into ourselves today, beyond pandemic infectious diseases, the truth is we all have infectious diseases. We all have diseases within us that cannot be touched, cannot be tampered with. How severe is this untouchable disease? Even my family members cannot touch it. If my beloved wife, or even my mother, touches that disease inside me, touches that wound, it explodes, leading to things that even I cannot handle. We all have such diseases within us. There is a wounding scar and a toxic germ inside us that makes even our own families shun us, push us away, and cause us to pierce one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the Lord is the one who stretches out His hand and touches us\u2014you and me\u2014in that condition. Our Lord is the one who approaches with His hand of love and touches the disease that no one else can touch. And He says, &#8220;I will; be clean.&#8221; Everyone, today, think of your own hand as the hand of the Lord and place it on your wounded heart. And let us declare: &#8220;I will; be made clean!&#8221; Amen. Amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many years, no one would have touched that man. He was full of disease. Full of germs. His body itself was just a mass of germs. Those germs must have been eating away at his body for a long time. It rotted from the inside. The blood rotted, the cells rotted. For Hansen&#8217;s disease patients, their noses disfigure, their ears fall off, and one day they find their fingers disappearing one by one. Onto that rotting, foul-smelling body, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him. And that touch transformed his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amazing thing is that when Jesus approached him and touched him, the man&#8217;s disease was not transmitted to Jesus. Instead, the power of the Holy Spirit within Jesus, the power of grace that Jesus possessed, was transmitted to him, transforming him. Everyone, this is the power of the kingdom of God. This is the power of the Holy Spirit poured out upon us. The direction of this contagion changes. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, we can now meet them and be with them. Why? Because with the power of the Holy Spirit within us, we are not contaminated by them, but they receive the power of the gospel from us, causing a history of transformation to take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord gave that same power of the Holy Spirit to the saints. The power of the Father&#8217;s Spirit that was within Jesus Christ\u2014that power was poured out upon the saints and upon the church starting from the Upper Room on Pentecost. Along with that power of the Holy Spirit, the church, God&#8217;s people, were made to go out into the world carrying this gospel of grace. Therefore, He does not say now, &#8220;Gather, gather, gather to Jerusalem. Build walls, set up barriers against the Gentiles, keep yourselves clean and pure, erect a holy breakwater, and live a life worthy of God&#8217;s people among yourselves.&#8221; Instead, you who have received the power of the Holy Spirit must go out into the world\u2014to Jerusalem, and all Judea, and to where? To the end of the earth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you go to the end of the earth, who is there? Is there a perfectly righteous person there? No. There are sinners there. There are sick people there. There are captives and the oppressed there. They are the ones suited for that grace. We approach them and proclaim that grace. We are with them. If we do, we do not become sinners. In the past, when the Israelites entered the land of Canaan, out of fear that they would live in sin like the Canaanite tribes, the Lord told them to drive them all out, drive them out, and live among themselves. The Lord did that to guard and protect them because they were not yet ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the church established together with Jesus Christ and with the Holy Spirit poured out by Jesus is not a community that enters the land of Canaan to occupy it, build walls, and live by ourselves inside. It is a community sent out into the world, to the ends of the earth, and to the Gentiles. It is a community sent into the midst of those sinners and into the midst of those sick people. I believe that the power of the Holy Spirit and the touch of love and grace within us will pierce through their character and lives, bringing about a history of transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, looking at verses 15 and 16 of today&#8217;s text, even though Jesus strictly charged him, the report about Jesus spread all the more. Great crowds gathered to hear Him and to be healed of their infirmities by Jesus. However, Jesus&#8217; power does not come from the headcount of those people. It is not a political power created by how much people recognize and follow Him. On the contrary, Jesus would withdraw to desolate places. This desolate place refers to the wilderness where Jesus was tempted. Abiding in that wilderness, Jesus lived a life of praying again. Yes, the power of the gospel does not come from people. The power of the gospel is not manufactured in the minds of humans. When we go out to that wilderness at any time, pray, receive the power poured out by the Holy Spirit, and rightly confirm our mission to proclaim the year of the Lord&#8217;s favor, I believe this astonishing history and power\u2014by which Jesus saved this life, character, and soul\u2014will take place among us today as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overcoming the Breakwater: Sent to the World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final story I want to share with you today is this: Is this work of grace taking place within us and through us today? Holding this gospel of grace, are we approaching those who need this gospel, being with them, accepting them, touching them, and witnessing the history of healing and restoration take place through them? To do that, what must we do first? We must approach them. We must not stop them from approaching us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet today, what kind of attitude does the church, the people who call themselves saints, live with? Through us, is grace being proclaimed to those lives that are masses of germs whom no one else can accept? Are we unhesitating in being with them, and is the history of their lives being healed and made new taking place through the church, through us who believe in Jesus? This is what matters. Everyone, rather, out of fear that their sins and their germs might be transferred to us, because it feels uncomfortable and dread-inducing, we tightly lock our doors. It is as if we have posted a sign on our church saying &#8216;Shincheonji cult members prohibited from entering.&#8217; Entry prohibited. Sinners prohibited from entering. Looking at our denomination&#8217;s newspaper, the biggest advertisement says, &#8220;Let us build a holy breakwater.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, the mission of the church is not to build a breakwater. Rather, it is to go beyond that breakwater, approach them, stretch out a hand, heal them, and save them. What can heal them and save them? Building a breakwater, verifying whether we are safe inside that breakwater, while holding a loudspeaker toward the people outside the breakwater and shouting, &#8220;You are sinners! Ah, you are sinners! If you live like that, you will go to hell! Therefore, raise your hands, believe in Jesus, and once you confess that you believe in Jesus, we will accept you and open the door for you.&#8221; Everyone, is that the method of evangelism? Is that Jesus&#8217; method?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Could it be that we are glaring at them with stones\u2014in times like this, we don&#8217;t say stones, we say jagged rocks\u2014in our hands, out of fear that they might approach us or spill our water? No, in fact, far from healing them, aren&#8217;t the germs within us penetrating our bodies and all our conduct, penetrating every corner of our relationships and lives, so that a rotting stench is vibrating? The people outside are saying, &#8220;Hey, hey, there is a rotting stench coming from you guys,&#8221; yet we alone close our eyes, we alone pretend not to know, we alone pretend to be perfectly fine, while pointing fingers at them as sinners, aren&#8217;t we?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, what must we do? Today, we must go out to the wilderness first. Just as the Lord went out to the wilderness and prayed, we too must be able to pray in that wilderness. How must we pray? We must pray to reconfirm our mission of being established through that gospel of grace, and with the Lord&#8217;s love and the power of the Holy Spirit, we must stand before them again, humbly acknowledging that we are the exact same sinners as them. We must confess that we are not a bit better than them, humbly serving them, loving them with the love we received and the grace we received, and delivering that grace to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we approach them with such a mind of the Lord, preach the gospel to them, and touch them, the power of the Lord&#8217;s grace and love, that power of the Holy Spirit, will surely ensure that we do not catch their sin, become sick, collapse, and die. Instead, the power of grace and love within us will transform them, save them, and make them new. I hope you believe that this astonishing history of grace will be perfectly fulfilled through us, through you and me, and through our church community that preaches the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you believe that? If you believe in the Lord, believe in the Lord&#8217;s promise that He poured out the Holy Spirit, and practice that work by faith.
