class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Moving from Trauma to the Assurance of Victory<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone, you have all heard the word &#8220;trauma&#8221; these days, haven&#8217;t you? Trauma is the long-lasting pain and aftereffects one suffers after experiencing an accident, a shock, or a wound. However, moving past this trauma takes time. It\u2019s not something that is resolved instantly just because conditions or situations have changed. For example, you may have heard stories of people who were taken as prisoners of war, kidnapped by terrorists, or captured by pirates and then released. Their aftereffects last a very long time. They were stripped, blindfolded, tied up, kicked, and thrown into cells; they had guns held to their heads with threats of death, only to be mocked and teased later\u2014living in a state of extreme anxiety. They endured each day in utter insecurity and terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after such people are released, their problems are not immediately solved. They may be back in their own homes, but as they go to bed, they cannot think, &#8220;I will wake up tomorrow peacefully with nothing happening.&#8221; Even while sleeping in their own house, they tremble, feel anxious, and experience terror. It often takes several months\u2014and for some, several years\u2014to be able to go to bed peacefully and wake up comfortably the next morning. This is perfectly natural. There is a story in the Bible that allows us to feel this kind of heart and mind of someone who has escaped from terror and threats. Where does it appear? Think of John chapter 8. There, we see a woman caught in the very act of adultery and brought before Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is surrounded by people holding stones\u2014people filled with self-righteousness, ready to hurl them at her. The woman likely couldn&#8217;t even lift her head; she was probably kneeling or lying flat on the ground, staring at the dirt and trembling uncontrollably. She is waiting for the stones to start flying at any moment. But then, after someone says a single word, strangely, the stones that should have been thrown do not come. Time passes, yet nothing happens. Sensing something is odd, she slowly lifts her head to look, but is anyone there? No one. The people who surrounded her have all vanished. Why did they disappear? It was because of one thing a man said: \u201cLet him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.\u201d Upon hearing those words, their consciences were so pricked that they could not throw the stones; they set them down and left the scene one by one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, that man who spoke, Jesus, remained there alone with the woman, who was dazed by the situation. He spoke to her as recorded in John 8:10: \u201cWoman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?\u201d How did she answer? She said, \u201cNo one, Lord.\u201d And Jesus said\u2014did He say, &#8220;Since those guys are gone, go back and live however you want&#8221;? No. He said, \u201cNeither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.\u201d Can you feel the atmosphere of this scene? Have you ever experienced such a precarious moment? We must be able to truly feel the sentiment of this scene through Romans chapter 8. To understand what the Apostle Paul is saying in Romans 8, this feeling must resonate with us. Imagine we are that woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are cautiously looking around, wary of the people who were condemning us, only to realize they are all gone. &#8220;How did this happen? What is going on?&#8221; Then Jesus&#8217; question is directed at us. His words are exactly the same as <strong>Romans 8:31<\/strong>. What does Romans 8:31 say? <strong>\u201cIf God is for us, who can be against us?\u201d<\/strong> In verse 32, the same type of question is asked: <strong>\u201cHe who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?\u201d<\/strong> Verse 33 is also a similar question: <strong>\u201cWho shall bring any charge against God&#8217;s elect?\u201d<\/strong> It means they cannot. Who can bring a charge? Verse 34 is even clearer: <strong>\u201cWho is to condemn?\u201d<\/strong> And finally, verse 35 declares to us: <strong>\u201cWho shall separate us from the love of Christ?\u201d<\/strong> How many questions are there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five. If you only hear the five questions, they seem like different statements. But the answer to all five of these distinct questions is actually the same. Just one thing: &#8220;It cannot be so.&#8221; No one can do such a thing. For the people of God, whom He foreknew, called, justified, and will glorify\u2014is there anything in this world that can harm God&#8217;s chosen people? No. If you believe this, say Amen. That is right. In verse 31, Paul says, \u201cWhat then shall we say to these things?\u201d What does this mean? It means no more words are needed. It is a fact so clear that no further explanation is required. This assurance of Paul&#8230; these words that lead us out of the trauma of fear and terror into confidence\u2014we want to confirm that today. What did he ask in verse 31? Who can be against us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s think about this question on its own. Who can be against us? If you think about this question, it almost seems absurd. &#8220;Who is against me?&#8221; Why, there are so many people against me in this world! There is a phrase young people use these days: &#8220;Why are you doing this to me? What did I do?&#8221; It feels as if the world is picking only on me. It feels like people are colliding with me from every direction, and enemies are lined up in a row. Why are there so many adversaries in this world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world that opposes God, the people who oppose God, and the still-sinful nature within my own self&#8230; Oh, this &#8220;enemy&#8221; that is my own flesh! This sinful nature. And the devil who moves the principalities and powers of darkness\u2014the ruler of the power of the air. So, when the world, my flesh, and the devil have all conspired together and won&#8217;t leave me alone, how can one ask &#8220;Who is against me?&#8221; I once met someone who asked, &#8220;Even that man sleeping and snoring next to me is not on my side; he is my &#8216;husband&#8217; (<em>nam-pyeon<\/em>), which in Korean sounds like &#8216;someone else&#8217;s side&#8217; (<em>nam-ui pyeon<\/em>). So where in the world is there anyone on my side?&#8221; But this is what is important. There is a phrase attached to the front of the question, \u201cWho can be against us?\u201d What is attached before it? Repeat after me: <strong>\u201cIf God is for us.\u201d<\/strong> This is what matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If God is on our side, then even if those people lined up to oppose us\u2014who aren&#8217;t just a long line at a famous bakery or a line for baseball tickets, but a crowd standing ready to strike me\u2014even if they are many, even if the world, the flesh, and the devil all oppose me, if God is on my side, does that opposition matter? It does not. Those adversaries cannot knock us down. Then everything changes. It is okay if everything else opposes me. Shall we try saying it? &#8220;It&#8217;s okay.&#8221; Pat your chest and say, &#8220;It&#8217;s okay.&#8221; Amen! That&#8217;s right. If God is for me, there is no longer anyone who can effectively stand against me. Their opposition is futile. As long as God is on our side, as long as I stand on God&#8217;s side, believe that they can never defeat us. And that God, as seen in verse 32, will He not <strong>\u201cgraciously give us all things\u201d<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me ask you: Do you really believe God will do everything for you? Does it sink in that God is on your side and will truly do all things for you? Those who say Amen must have great faith. Will He really guard us? Will He really protect us? Will He truly give me that gift? Sometimes, even after feeling like we believe it, when we look at ourselves and see our own &#8220;messy&#8221; state, we might think: &#8220;Would He really do that for someone like me? I have nothing worthy of receiving it; I&#8217;m not a great person and I&#8217;ve never done anything great. How can I be sure God will do that?&#8221; To those who said Amen, tell me: how did you say Amen? Let me tell you one thing. In those moments, do not look at yourself\u2014look at God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the world&#8217;s religions make you look at yourself and worry: &#8220;How did I do?&#8221;, &#8220;What kind of person am I?&#8221;, &#8220;What should I do?&#8221; But the Gospel is not like that. The Gospel makes us look at who our God is. What kind of person is He? He is the God who has already given up His Son for you and me. <strong>\u201cHe who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?\u201d<\/strong> Hallelujah! If He is the God who has already given us that greatest gift, what about the other things? &#8220;Will God guard us? Will God keep this promise? Will God ultimately lead my life to victory?&#8221; There is no need to doubt those things. It goes without saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe the fact that the cross\u2014the cross where He gave His Son\u2014gives us the assurance for all those things. Therefore, we must know that the cross confirms the Father&#8217;s love for us. Paul says clearly: \u201cWho shall bring any charge against God&#8217;s elect?\u201d Who can bring a charge? Since God, who is the Judge, has declared, &#8220;Righteous! Justified! Not Guilty!&#8221; then no further indictment, condemnation, or charge can knock us down. In that courtroom, we have Jesus Christ as our Advocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is not a lawyer bought with a lot of money because of his former high-ranking status; He is Jesus Christ, who is one with the Father\u2014Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son. He has become our Advocate to protect us. Not only that, but He died for our sins, conquered death, rose again, ascended to heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father, and is interceding for us even now. Therefore, you must clearly know that we will never fall to any charge, condemnation, or indictment. Paul asked, \u201cWho shall bring any charge&#8230;?\u201d and if we take those words alone, we might think, &#8220;There are so many people who could bring a charge against me!&#8221; When I think about it, there are so many people who could accuse me. I was so mischievous when I was young, causing trouble that even my older brothers didn&#8217;t cause. Who knows all that? My mother knows best. My mother could charge me with all my past misdeeds. Who else could charge me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are our spouses\u2014those we lured in by saying, &#8220;I&#8217;ll make you happy, I&#8217;ll truly make only you happy,&#8221; only to sit them down and make them suffer, wounding them and making them shed tears. If they wanted to charge me, how much content would there be? And our children, who suffered because their dad was a pastor, always making excuses about being busy, unable to talk or play with them, always out as if others were more important, failing to look after their individual needs and disappointing them&#8230; If those children looked for reasons to charge me, there would be so many. There are countless people who could charge us. There was a movie I saw once called <em>I Know What You Did Last Summer<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I were to randomly send a note to any of you sitting here saying, &#8220;I know what you did last summer,&#8221; you would tremble even if I didn&#8217;t specify what the deed was. From that moment, all sorts of strange things would happen in your mind. &#8220;How does he know what I did last summer? What should I do? Should I run? Should I hide?&#8221; That is us. Why? Because I know better than anyone else what kind of being I am. Even if others don&#8217;t know, I know. That is why the devil is called the &#8220;accuser.&#8221; In the Bible, the devil is the accuser\u2014in modern terms, he is like a prosecutor in a courtroom. A prosecutor&#8217;s job is to indict. Now, when you hear this, don&#8217;t say, &#8220;The pastor called prosecutors &#8216;devils&#8217;!&#8221; No, no. That&#8217;s not it. Don&#8217;t misunderstand. They are doing their job according to the law. An indicting party is absolutely necessary and important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent random people from bringing charges, we have a system of &#8220;prosecutorial monopoly,&#8221; where the task of indictment is handled exclusively by civil servants who majored in law. It is a system designed to protect human rights from indiscriminate indictments. It is important. Anyway, the devil plays that role in the heavenly courtroom. Satan the devil constantly indicts us. He is the accuser. He constantly stabs at us and threatens us. But all those accusations against us will ultimately end in failure. Do you know this? It is important to know this. We will be protected to the end against any accusation, charge, or condemnation. Through whom? Because the One who chose us, called us, declared us righteous, and will glorify us has forgiven everything through His love in Jesus Christ and declared: &#8220;Already not guilty! You are my righteous child!&#8221; Let\u2019s repeat this: &#8220;No one can condemn.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Verse 34 asks, \u201cWho is to condemn?\u201d Many people are rushing to condemn us, and that is terrifying. Even within our own hearts, we condemn ourselves. The enemy devil constantly uses that to condemn us and try to make us fall. But it is of no use. Why is it useless? It is because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for you and me. Christ has already received all the condemnation we were supposed to receive; He carried the price of that sin, shed His blood, and died on the cross. If you believe this, say Amen. He received all the punishment we deserved and paid the full price. So, if Satan comes again to condemn you, say this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Yes, you&#8217;re right. Everything you say is true. I am that kind of person. I am a sinner. Just as you say, I am someone who has no choice but to die as the price for that sin. However, Jesus Christ died on the cross for me. He has already paid the price for that sin with His blood. Because He died in my place, and because He rose again in my place\u2014He who died and rose for my sin is now sitting at the right hand of the Father&#8217;s throne, at the right hand of that Judge, praying for me\u2014so your condemnation of me is utterly useless!&#8221; Hallelujah! Everyone, stand against Satan boldly with these words of the Gospel. That is when verse 35 is needed: <strong>\u201cWho shall separate us from the love of Christ?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there anything positioned between us and the love of Christ for us that could block it or sever it? The Bible speaks decisively: there is no such thing. Let\u2019s read verse 35 in full together: <strong>\u201cWho shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?\u201d<\/strong> Tribulation, distress, and persecution are attacks that come to us from the world. Famine or nakedness\u2014&#8221;nakedness&#8221; (<em>jeok-sin<\/em>) means being stripped bare. It means being stripped so that your red flesh is exposed. it represents the exposure of our shame, disgrace, and insults\u2014it means stripping away our weaknesses for all to see. Danger or sword are the greatest factors of insecurity that threaten our lives. But do we believe in Jesus in order to escape such insecurities, live a safe life, be protected, or avoid such things? It seems that way, but it is not. Look at verse 36:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cAs it is written, \u2018For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> What on earth does this mean? &#8220;We&#8221;\u2014who is &#8220;we&#8221;? It&#8217;s God&#8217;s people, the people who believe in Jesus Christ\u2014it&#8217;s us. We are being killed all the day long for the Lord\u2019s sake and are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered. Actually, Paul didn&#8217;t just make this up; he is quoting Psalm 44:22. What does it mean? It means that since long ago, God&#8217;s people have lived such lives. A life of being killed for the Lord&#8217;s sake, a life of being regarded as sheep for the slaughter\u2014and not just once in a while, but &#8220;all the day long.&#8221; That is our life. But the question is: can this pain and difficulty separate us, God&#8217;s people, from the love of Christ? It cannot. This is the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Romans 8 says nothing can drag us away from God&#8217;s love and nothing can condemn us&#8230; so, did it say &#8220;You will avoid all hardship, tribulation, and persecution and live a prosperous and comfortable life&#8221;? No, it did not. Despite everything, we groan on this earth along with the groaning creation, suffering and facing tribulation, persecution, famine, and difficulty\u2014living a life where we feel like sheep for the slaughter, being killed every day. We cannot avoid it; that is our life. In fact, going one step further, God&#8217;s purpose for us is to follow the example of His Son who suffered. But even so, that suffering, pain, and difficulty cannot separate us from the love of Christ. Believe the fact that ultimately, God&#8217;s will, plan, and purpose for us will be fully achieved within the love of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from separating us from Christ&#8217;s love, in all these things\u2014even while we are enduring that suffering\u2014we are more than conquerors. Amen! Let\u2019s repeat: <strong>\u201cIn all these things we are more than conquerors.\u201d<\/strong> Amen! Do we win by a narrow margin? Do we just barely survive like someone barely doing a pull-up? No, no. Others may see us that way, but from God&#8217;s perspective, believe that we are more than conquerors in all these things. It&#8217;s important to know the reason why we can win. Look: this phrase &#8220;more than conquerors&#8221; in the Korean Bible is two words, but in the Greek Bible, it is one word: <strong><em>hypernikomen<\/em><\/strong>. Looking up this verb, <em>hypernikomen<\/em> or <em>hypernikomai<\/em>, in a Greek-English dictionary, it has the following meanings: &#8220;We over-conquer&#8221; or &#8220;To be more than a conqueror.&#8221; What does it mean? A conqueror is someone who wins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means being more than a conqueror. You win with room to spare. How is such a thing possible? Our lives are so heavy, and we pass through each day in such pain. But there is a very important sentence before it: <strong>\u201cthrough him who loved us.\u201d<\/strong> If we look at ourselves, it seems we cannot win or endure. But it is not through us; it is through Him who loved us! Who is He? Our Lord Jesus Christ, who loved us so much He willingly gave Himself up on the cross! Because Christ proved His love for us by suffering for us, and because He rose again, conquering sin and death, such suffering can no longer separate us from that love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, even if we are within that suffering, we are not suffering because we are weak or failing or about to be ruined. We are suffering because it is within the Father&#8217;s will, plan, and purpose to make us like Him\u2014to make us follow the work He achieved as those who resemble Him. Therefore, no suffering can separate us from His love. Amen! That is why the final two verses are given to us with such assurance. Let\u2019s read verses 38 and 39 together: <strong>\u201cFor I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d<\/strong> Amen! I believe this same assurance must be proclaimed to you and me today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s the crisis of death or a disaster threatening life, whether it&#8217;s good things or bad things, whether it&#8217;s any cosmic power or authority, or time that makes us anxious&#8230; Paul uses &#8220;height&#8221; to represent time and &#8220;depth&#8221; to represent space. No time, no space, no anything can separate us, because all those things are merely creations made by God. We are held in the hand of God who created and governs all things. As long as the confirmation of God&#8217;s love\u2014given to us in His Son Jesus Christ\u2014is within us, believe the fact that we can never be separated from the love of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christ came among us in the flesh and fulfilled that love through death; He poured His Spirit upon us, so God the Holy Spirit always indwells us, stays with us, and leads us. Thus, as we groan each day within the Father&#8217;s will along with the groaning creation\u2014no, as we groan and pray within the pain of creation alongside the Spirit and fulfill our mission\u2014believe that God is the one who will surely achieve His will, plan, and purpose among us. No matter what suffering strikes us, no matter what worldly power or authority oppresses or weighs us down, even if we fall into pessimism because of our own weakness and the world&#8217;s darkness makes us despair every day\u2014even so, Christ&#8217;s love for us cannot be severed from us within God\u2019s marvelous providence. Whether we look at the world or at ourselves, we are people who cannot feel at ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The world is still in pain and groaning, and we are still living in weak and falling flesh. However, we are people within the love of God. When we look at ourselves, we find no confidence that we can win anything. But when we look at Him who loves us\u2014when we look at Him hanging on the cross\u2014we confirm once again that there is nothing we cannot win\u2014no, there is nothing we cannot overcome. The One who foreknew us, called us, justified us, and glorified us loves you and me. Amen! To what extent does He love us? He loves us so much He gave up His own Son on the cross for you and me. And that Son died on the cross\u2014and not only died, but rose again, conquered death, ascended to heaven, governs all heaven and earth, and sits at the right hand of the Father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I believe He will surely come again as the Ruler of this earth to fulfill His will in making the whole world new and restoring it. This is the Gospel the Bible tells us. We are people called to conform to His image in order to achieve His will in the life He has called us to. Therefore, though we ourselves are weak and may fail, His will, plan, and purpose for us will never fail. That is the point Romans 8 emphasizes. We have meditated on Romans 8 for several weeks. What was the first thing mentioned at the very beginning of Romans 8? \u201cThere is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.\u201d Amen! Now, at the end of Romans 8, there is an assurance proclaimed to us once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d Amen! That&#8217;s right. The love of God, who not only gave up Jesus to death but raised Him from that death, has chosen you and me. He has saved you and me. He makes you and me new. He has not only declared you and me righteous, but He will transform you and me into those who participate in that path of suffering along with the glorious cross of the Lord. He will complete us in that way. I believe that in the world of the &#8220;new creation&#8221; where Jesus&#8217; life works within that calling of God\u2014in the new heaven and new earth\u2014you and I will be used in the history of reigning, governing, and making the whole world new together with the Lord. No one, no one can separate us from that love. No one can tear us away from that mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will surely be achieved through us. For that, there is just one last thing we must remember. Salvation is not only God&#8217;s gift given to us, His people, but it is also God&#8217;s gift achieved throughout the world through His people. Therefore, our God\u2014who has called you, predestined you, called you, justified you, and leads you toward that glorious cross\u2014will surely use you and me in that marvelous mission of making the whole world new and restoring God&#8217;s will and God&#8217;s Shalom\u2014the mission of the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if your life is currently in groaning, tears, and suffering, we are never those who are abandoned or separated from the love of Christ because of that suffering. Instead, together with Christ, we will fully achieve that love on the cross, proclaim that forgiveness, preach the Gospel of reconciliation, deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus as His disciples\u2014living a life that bears the fruit of the Kingdom of God&#8217;s values. Believe the fact that God&#8217;s will, plan, and purpose never fails within you and me and will surely be achieved.
